The common loon (Gavia immer) breeds during the summer on northern lakes and water bodies that are also often desirable areas for aquatic recreation and human habitation. In northern New England, we assessed how the spatial nature of disturbance affects common loon nest site selection and territory success. We found through classification and regression analysis that distance to and density of disturbance factors can be used to classify observed nest site locations versus random points, suggesting that these factors affect loon nest site selection (model 1: Correct classification = 75%, null = 50%, K = 0.507, P < 0.001; model 2: Correct classification = 78%, null = 50%, K = 0.551, P < 0.001). However, in an exploratory analysis, we were unable to show a relation between spatial disturbance variables and breeding success (P = 0.595, R2 = 0.436), possibly because breeding success was so low during the breeding seasons of 2007–2008. We suggest that by selecting nest site locations that avoid disturbance factors, loons thereby limit the effect that disturbance will have on their breeding success. Still, disturbance may force loons to use sub-optimal nesting habitat, limiting the available number of territories, and overall productivity. We advise that management efforts focus on limiting disturbance factors to allow breeding pairs access to the best nesting territories, relieving disturbance pressures that may force sub-optimal nest placement. © 2011 The Wildlife Society  相似文献

In species in which males defend territories for breeding, males may differ in territorial behavior; alternative behaviors among territorial males are not well understood. In our long‐term study of partially‐migratory song sparrows, we have observed that most territorial males establish territories before females begin nesting and remain site‐faithful both within and between breeding seasons; however, some males establish territories later in the season (late establishers) and/or change territory locations either within or between seasons (movers). Whether late establishment or moving are equally successful strategies for territory defense, or best‐of‐bad‐job options, is not known. Here, we compare the frequencies of these behaviors to demographic variables over a 9‐yr period and compare lifetime tenure and early season nesting success for males who differ in site fidelity and timing of territory establishment. Across years, late establishing was negatively correlated with the return rate of previously territorial males; moving was positively correlated with the number of occupied territories at the start of the breeding season (territory density). While moving was independent of number of years on territory, late territory establishment only occurred in a male’s first year as a territory holder. Of 88 males, 25% established their first territory late, primarily in undefended space; 31% moved. Late and early establishers did not differ in lifetime tenure; movers, however, had longer lifetime tenure than site‐faithful males. Among early establishers, movers and non‐movers did not differ in the number of successful early nests/year or number of young fledged/year; among late establishers, however, movers had significantly higher early nesting success by both measures. Late establishers who moved had higher early season nesting success and higher early season nesting success/year than site‐faithful early establishers. Thus, individual variation in the timing of territory establishment and site fidelity may be facultative alternative territorial strategies.  相似文献

As the value of a limited resource such as a territory increases, animals should invest more in the defence of that resource. Because reproductive success often depends on the quality of a breeding territory, reproductive success or failure may alter the perceived value of territory and affect an animal's investment in territorial defence. We used common loons Gavia immer to test the hypothesis that animals with recent breeding success would show stronger territorial defence than those with no recent breeding success. Surprisingly, successful loons responded less, not more, to a simulated intrusion. However, birds with success in the previous season also increased their territorial response as the breeding season progressed. In conjunction with past data showing that recently successful loons experience an increase in conspecific intrusions on their territories, we interpret our data to suggest that loons with recent success offset the cost of increased intrusions by adopting a more efficient strategy for territorial defence (e.g. limiting investment in resource defence until the time of the season when it is most critical).  相似文献

Interspecific competition is an important process structuring ecological communities, however, it is difficult to observe in nature. We used an occupancy modelling approach to evaluate evidence of competition between yellow‐billed (Gavia adamsii) and Pacific (G. pacifica) loons for nesting lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska. With multiple years of data and survey platforms, we estimated dynamic occupancy states (e.g. rates of colonization or extinction from individual lakes) and controlled for detection differences among aircraft platforms and ground survey crews. Results indicated that yellow‐billed loons were strong competitors and negatively influenced the occupancy of Pacific loons by excluding them from potential breeding lakes. Pacific loon occupancy was conditional on the presence of yellow‐billed loons, with Pacific loons having almost a tenfold decrease in occupancy probability when yellow‐billed loons were present and a threefold decrease in colonization probability when yellow‐billed loons were present in the current or previous year. Yellow‐billed and Pacific loons co‐occurred less than expected by chance except on very large lakes or lakes with convoluted shorelines; variables which may decrease the cost of maintaining a territory in the presence of the other species. These results imply the existence of interspecific competition between yellow‐billed and Pacific loons for nesting lakes; however, habitat characteristics which facilitate visual and spatial separation of territories can reduce competitive interactions and promote species co‐occurrence.  相似文献

A detailed analysis was made of the variation in spawning success among male ForsterygionTripterygion) varium. The aim was to assess whether females were mating selectively and, if so, to examine the basis of that choice. Eggs were laid on small rocks within the males' territories. Females did not distribute eggs randomly among males. Some males guarded as many as 23000 eggs in one breeding season, while others experienced little or no breeding success. Male spawning success was positively correlated with both their size and some characteristics of their territories, namely the amount of spawning substratum and the presence of a large boulder adjacent to the territory. Experimental manipulations indicated that female choice of males was based on these features. Addition of small rocks into the territories of previously unsuccessful males resulted in a significant increase in spawning success. Conversely, spawning success of the most successful males decreased when small rocks were removed from their territories. When successful males were removed, each territory was occupied by small males; however, there was no significant change in the spawning success of these males. This experiment suggested that, although territory quality was important, female mating decisions could also be influenced by male characteristics such as body size.  相似文献

Many territorial species have a mating system characterized by males establishing home ranges in the breeding grounds prior to females, resulting in males competing for territories and females choosing a mate upon their arrival. It remains unknown, however, how the outcomes of decisions surrounding territory establishment and mate choice are influenced by the spatial configuration of the breeding grounds. We use a spatially explicit, individual-based model to investigate the sex-specific effects of these decisions on reproductive success. In our model, males that arrive earlier obtain higher quality territories and improve their chances for extra-pair copulations. Females can choose their mate to maximize the quality of the male or to attempt to minimize the density of other females near their nesting site to avoid competition. Females therefore face a tradeoff between high-density regions around high-quality males and low-quality males in areas of low competition. Our model predicts a negative correlation between male and female reproductive success under a wide range of conditions when the majority of the territories are on the margins of the breeding area. Most notably, this sexual conflict arises as an edge effect suggesting that fragmentation of breeding habitats could impact the consequences of mate choice in many species with territorial breeding habits.  相似文献

Structure and distribution of animal territories are driven by a variety of environmental and demographic factors. A peninsular population of common loons (Gavia immer) nests on lakes in northwestern Montana, but does not occupy all apparently suitable breeding territories, suggesting unexplained limitations on population growth. To evaluate territorial dynamics of breeding loons in Montana, we created and tested occupancy models that evaluated the hypothesized effects of disturbance, habitat, and intraspecific relationships on territory occupancy by common loons in Montana from 2003 to 2007. Model-averaged results indicated that the abundance of feeding lakes within 10 km (i.e., forage quality) and the number of territorial pairs within 10 km (i.e., density of loons) were equally supported and related to probabilities of occupancy. We found substantial support that the population was in a state of equilibrium, with the numbers of occupied territories stable in time, but not space. We also found that density of territorial pairs was related to the likelihood that an existing territory would be abandoned, but did not influence the establishment of new territories, suggesting the presence of territorial pairs could be a stronger indicator of territory quality to loons than physical lake characteristics. Our index of human disturbance was not well-supported compared to other factors. Our results suggest management for stable or growing loon populations could be achieved using long-term monitoring and protection of occupied territorial lakes and nearby feeding lakes, because these factors most influenced the probability of occupancy of surrounding lakes. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Females of many species can gain benefits from being choosy about their mates and even exhibit context-dependent investment in reproduction in response to the quality of their breeding situation. Here, we show that if a male house wren is provided with surplus nest boxes in his territory, his mate lays a larger clutch with a significantly higher proportion of sons. This response to a territory characteristic directly associated with male competitive ability, and ultimately to male reproductive success, suggests that male competition over access to high-quality territories with surplus nest boxes (i.e. those able to support polygyny) may influence female reproductive investment decisions. The results of this study have interesting implications, particularly considering the important role that studies of cavity nesting birds utilizing nest boxes have played in advancing our understanding of behaviour, ecology and evolution.  相似文献

In many species, young animals learn about various breedingpatches in one year and use what they have learned to settlein a promising patch the next. Common loons (Gavia immer) seemgood candidates for such prospecting as prebreeders and displacedbreeders intrude frequently into breeding territories defendedby monogamous pairs yet engage in no extrapair copulations.We tested 3 hypotheses for prospecting in loons. The permanentattributes hypothesis gained little support as we found no consistentdifferences in quality between territories and no physical orbiotic trait that predicted reproductive success in a territory.We found some support for the conspecific attraction hypothesisas intruders were attracted to conspecifics in a lake in theshort term; however, intrusions were not more frequent in territoriesthat had experienced regular use by a pair the previous yearthan in territories that had previously been vacant. Instead,the increase in intrusion rate after a year of chick productionsupported the habitat-copying hypothesis, which states thatfloaters use the presence of chicks as a cue to target territoriesfor future attempts at territorial takeover. Despite this systemof prospecting, founding of new territories was common. Onestriking finding was the tendency of territorial breeders toconceal chicks from flying intruders, perhaps to avoid futureterritorial takeover.  相似文献

In an environment that has a shortage of territories, helping to rear younger siblings ('alloparenting') is proposed to facilitate territory acquisition in two ways: (i) through group augmentation that leads to an increase of the territory with subsequent partial inheritance (budding); and (ii) through site dominance that leads to greater success when competing for the natal or a nearby territory after the death of the territory owner (complete territory inheritance). Most young Seychelles warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis) males either show alloparenting or budding behaviour. Future budders had significantly more aggressive interactions with neighbours and assisted their parents more with territory defence than similarly aged future alloparents or non-helpers. This led to an increase of the natal territory of future budders before actual budding took place, whereas the natal territories of future alloparents remained constant in size. Alloparents never became budders and vice versa, refuting partial inheritance as an advantage of alloparenting. Natural male breeding vacancies were never inherited by alloparents born on vacant or other territories, but were inherited by budders born on the vacant territory or, if these were absent, predominantly by budders from neighbouring territories. We offer explicit experimental evidence against the 'helping at the nest to inherit' hypothesis. Experimentally created male breeding vacancies, with both a male alloparent and a similarly aged sibling budder present simultaneously in the vacant territory, were filled by budders only. Site dominance over territory inheritance is linked to budding and not to alloparenting.  相似文献

Land management intrinsically influences the distribution of animals and can consequently alter the potential for density-dependent processes to act within populations. For declining species, high densities of breeding territories are typically considered to represent productive populations. However, as density-dependent effects of food limitation or predator pressure may occur (especially when species are dependent upon separate nesting and foraging habitats), high territory density may limit per-capita productivity. Here, we use a declining but widespread European farmland bird, the yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella L., as a model system to test whether higher territory densities result in lower fledging success, parental provisioning rates or nestling growth rates compared to lower densities. Organic landscapes held higher territory densities, but nests on organic farms fledged fewer nestlings, translating to a 5 times higher rate of population shrinkage on organic farms compared to conventional. In addition, when parental provisioning behaviour was not restricted by predation risk (i.e., at times of low corvid activity), nestling provisioning rates were higher at lower territory densities, resulting in a much greater increase in nestling mass in low density areas, suggesting that food limitation occurred at high densities. These findings in turn suggest an ecological trap, whereby preferred nesting habitat does not provide sufficient food for rearing nestlings at high population density, creating a population sink. Habitat management for farmland birds should focus not simply on creating a high nesting density, but also on ensuring heterogeneous habitats to provide food resources in close proximity to nesting birds, even if this occurs through potentially restricting overall nest density but increasing population-level breeding success.  相似文献

1.?Because habitats have profound effects on individual fitness, there is strong selection for improving the choice of breeding habitat. One possible mechanism is for individuals to use public information when prospecting future breeding sites; however, to our knowledge, no study has shown prospecting behaviour to be directly linked to subsequent choice of breeding site and future reproductive success. 2.?We collected long-term data on territory-specific prospecting behaviour and subsequent breeding in the short-lived northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe). Non-breeders established prospecting territories (<2 ha) that overlapped the breeding territories of conspecifics. We tested whether: (i) prospectors used social and environmental cues that predicted territory-specific breeding success in the following year, and (ii) the prospecting territory was tightly linked to the subsequent breeding territory of the prospector, and whether this link would be weakened by intraspecific competition with original territory owners if they also survived. 3.?As expected, prospectors were attracted to a combination of site-specific cues that predicted future breeding success, i.e. short ground vegetation, a successfully breeding focal pair and successful close neighbours. 4.?Prospecting behaviour was directly linked to the choice of the following year's breeding territory: 79% of surviving prospectors established a breeding territory at their prospecting site in the following year, with their breeding success being higher than other individuals of the same age. As predicted, fidelity to the prospected site was strongly dependent on whether the original territory owner of the same sex had died or moved. 5.?Our findings suggest that the use of multiple cues reduces the negative impact of stochasticity on the reliability of social cues at small spatial scales (e.g. territories) and hence increases the probability of breeding success in the next year. Also, the use of conspecific attraction (i.e. the preference for breeding aggregations) is selectively advantageous because individuals are more likely to find a vacancy in an aggregation as compared to a solitary site. By extension, we hypothesize that species life-history traits may influence the spatial scale of prospecting behaviour and habitat selection strategies.  相似文献

Female mate choice based on territory quality is difficult to study because territories often contain many resources, which are difficult to quantify. Here, using the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica gutturalis) breeding at an outdoor breeding site in Japan, where each male defends only a small territory containing old nests, we studied whether females choose social mates based on territory quality. Since the territories of this species contain few other resources, territory quality can easily be assessed by quantifying old nests in the territory. We made the following four observations: (1) male swallows displayed old nests in their territories to females; (2) the old nests used for the first clutch were less broken than the other old nests within the same territory; (3) territory quality, defined by the number of old nests weighted by the intactness of each old nest, predicted the productivity of the territory; and (4) males with better territories paired with females earlier, and hence bred earlier, than those with inferior territories. The relationships remained significant even after controlling for male morphological traits. Based on these results, we can infer that female swallows choose their mates based, in part, on territory quality.  相似文献

Senescence, increased mortality that occurs among animals of advanced age, impacts behavior and ecology in many avian species. We investigated actuarial, reproductive, and behavioral senescence using capture, marking, and resighting data from a 26‐year study of common loons Gavia immer. Territorial residents of both sexes exhibited high annual survival (0.94) until their mid 20s, at which point survival fell to 0.76 and 0.77 in males and females, respectively. Sexual symmetry in actuarial senescence is somewhat surprising in this species, because males make a substantially greater investment in territory defense and chick‐rearing and because males engage in lethal contests for territory ownership. Survival of displaced breeders (0.80) was lower than that of territorial residents in both young and old individuals. Old males and females also experienced slightly higher annual probability of eviction (0.16 for males; 0.17 for females) than prime‐aged breeders (0.13 for both sexes), indicating senescence in territory defense. Prime‐aged males reclaimed territories at a high rate (0.49), in contrast to females of the same age (0.33). However, old males resettled with success (0.35) similar to old females (0.31), suggesting that males decline in competitive ability as they age. Nonetheless males, but not females, showed an apparent increase in breeding success over the entire lifetime, a possible indication that very old males make a terminal investment in reproductive output at the cost of survival.  相似文献

Age-specific access to high-quality resources (e.g. territory or nest site) might be an important determinant for improved reproductive performance with increasing age. I experimentally investigated the effects of territory quality versus other age-related improvements in breeding competence (e.g. foraging skills, breeding experience and local knowledge) on age-specific reproductive success. Territory quality (i.e. territory field layer height) was manipulated in year 2 of northern wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) that were breeding in the same territory in two consecutive years. Changing territory quality by changing field layer height had a strong effect on within-individual change in the reproductive success of wheatears. This effect was mainly due to a corresponding change in nest predation risk. When territory quality was kept constant (i.e. no between-year change in territory field layer height), within-individual reproductive success did not change between subsequent years. Thus, age-related improvements in foraging skills, breeding experience and local familiarity had no significant effect on within-individual changes in reproductive success. Increased reproductive success with increased age in northern wheatears is therefore mainly explained by an improved access to high-quality territories with increasing age. I conclude that age-dependent access to high-quality breeding resources might be a widespread phenomenon in nature.  相似文献

Data are based on more than 200 h of observation at Ethiopia's Lake Shala from 1966 to 1972. Except for differences in size of bill, there are no useful field characters separating male and female Sacred Ibis. The breeding plumage is described; vivid blood-red colour underneath the wings and the ornamental plumes are especially obvious when nesting commences. Physical and biological features of Lake Shala, Ethiopia, and its nesting islands are described; the species of birds nesting on the Shala islands are given. Ibises nest at Shah from March to August; no nesting has been recorded from September to February during the last months of the ‘big’ rains through the main dry season. Nesting normally begins in the ‘small’ rains (between 14 March-24 April), although instances were recorded as early as 1 March and as late as 20 August. The ibises normally nest once per year, although it is possible that occasionally a second nesting may occur after an unsuccessful first attempt. The ibises at Shala nest in discrete groups; several nesting groups may form on any or all of the islands; the number of groups attempting to nest varied from year to year. Nesting activity begins when males arrive and establish pairing territories, usually in a small tree but sometimes on the ground. When females and other males arrive at the pairing territories, pair formation ensues. At this time males perform forward threat, modified forward threat, pursuit flight, supplanting attack and modified snap displays, while both sexes perform stretch and bow displays. Once established, the pair abandons the pairing territory and moves to the nesting area, usually near but always distinct from the pairing territory, and establishes a nest-site territory. Most members of the nesting group move to the nesting area on the same day. Copulation then takes place, and is followed by collection of nest material, usually by the male. Nests are built close together. The average area of 10 nests measured was 0.09 m2. Nests are usually less than 20 cm thick and are made of many small branches and sticks. The average clutch in 34 nests was 2.24 eggs; the average size of 34 eggs was 63.4×43.5 mm. Incubation probably begins when the clutch is complete. Both sexes incubate, and the incubation period probably lasts 28–29 days. The development of the young is described. The young leave the nest-site territory when 14–21 days old. Although they are capable of some flight when 35–40 days old, the young do not leave the colony until they are 44–48 days old. In the colony, both parents care for the young. Usually only one parent at a time is with the young. The parents recognize their own young and are usually recognized by them. The behavioural interactions between young and parents are described. Fledging success in 1968 was 1.06 young per pair. The number of pairs successfully rearing young varied annually from none to 81%, on average over six years (1966–70, 1972) 35%. Predation at the breeding colonies is minimal. The food of one one-month old chick consisted of beetle larvae, lepidopteran larvae and beetles. Feeding areas, although undetermined, must be widespread. Inter-specific competition between Sacred Ibis and other nesting birds at Shala is discussed. Among possible factors stimulating nesting at Shala one, fairly heavy rainfall, seems to be especially important. It is also suggested that especially heavy rain-storms cause ibises to abandon the colonies, and result in poor breeding success.  相似文献

For migratory birds, early arrival at breeding areas has many benefits, such as acquisition of better territories and mates. This strategy has been found in numerous species breeding at north‐temperate latitudes, but has not been yet reported for intra‐tropical migratory species. We evaluated the relationship between arrival date, initiation of breeding, and breeding success of Fork‐tailed Flycatchers (Tyrannus savana) breeding in southeastern Brazil and overwintering in northern South America. We color‐banded adult flycatchers during three breeding seasons and searched for them during the following breeding seasons. We also monitored nests from construction until either failure or fledging of young. We found that: (1) male Fork‐tailed Flycatchers arrived at the breeding site earlier than females, (2) males that arrived earlier had greater breeding success, and (3) nests where eggs were laid earlier in the breeding season were more likely to be successful than those where eggs were laid later. Male Fork‐tailed Flycatchers appeared to benefit from early arrival at a tropical breeding site, potentially mediated by their ability to acquire a high‐quality territory and mate as early as possible, and by the ability of their mate to begin breeding as early as possible. Breeding success for female Fork‐tailed Flycatchers may be determined primarily by a combination of the arrival date of their mate and how quickly they can begin breeding. Our results suggest that protandry occurs in an intra‐tropical migratory bird and that early arrival of males and early initiation of reproduction by females results in greater reproductive success. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms that control the timing of migration and reproduction of this and other intra‐tropical migratory species is important for evaluating the challenges they face in light of current and future rapid environmental changes.  相似文献

Unlike many other polygynous passerine species, female Corn Buntings Miliaria calandra apparently do not suffer costs by pairing polygynously, yet it is unclear whether this is because polygynous males hold the highest quality territories or because pairing with polygynous males is unimportant in determining female reproductive success. Male Corn Buntings on North Uist, Scotland, consistently defended territories which contained nesting habitat, and females often foraged outside male territories when provisioning nestlings. Females showed strong preferences for nesting in uncultivated land, and 80% of nests were under Hogweed Heracleum sphondylium, possibly because this provided cover against predation and the weather. When provisioning nestlings, females showed strong preferences for foraging in cereal crops, probably because this habitat provided better food resources and/or better cover from predators. Males were unpaired or paired with one to three females per breeding season, but variation in territory size or vegetation composition did not explain differences in the number of females paired with individual males. We suggest that when females neither gain benefits nor suffer costs by breeding polygynously, and males do not differ greatly in the areas of habitat selected, polygyny can arise through random female settlement within the nesting habitat.  相似文献

An influential period in avian life‐cycles is the annual breeding season, when competition over suitable nesting sites and territories is a key factor that can determine fitness and distribution, especially for species that are highly selective in their nesting habitats. We analysed nest‐site characteristics, breeding success and competitive interactions between two apex predator populations. Whereas the Short‐toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus has nested in the Judean Foothills (Israel) for a long time, the Long‐legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus has only invaded the nesting habitat of the Short‐toed Eagle during their breeding season in the last two decades. These two recently sympatric species have similar nesting ecology and frequently use the same nests. They are therefore expected to compete over nesting sites and territories. We analysed interspecific interactions between these two species by combining information from comprehensive observational, experimental, GIS analysis and remote sensing data, deriving 65 variables to characterize the nest‐sites used and the breeding success in 381 breeding attempts over four consecutive breeding seasons. To assess interspecific and intraspecific territorial behaviour and aggressiveness, stuffed Long‐legged Buzzards and Short‐toed Eagles were presented close to nests. Nest‐site characteristics overlapped substantially between species, and Long‐legged Buzzards occupied 21% of all Short‐toed Eagle nests. Intraspecific aggression rates among Long‐legged Buzzards were higher than their interspecific aggression rates with Short‐toed Eagles and also higher than intraspecific aggression among Short‐toed Eagles. Long‐legged Buzzard and Short‐toed Eagle breeding densities (1.59 ± 0.11 and 2.96 ± 0.11 pairs per 10 km2, respectively) are likely to be the highest across their respective breeding distributions, with a maximum productivity of 0.96 ± 0.01 and 0.56 ± 0.05 (young fledged/breeding pair) for Long‐legged Buzzard and Short‐toed Eagle, respectively. Intraspecific interactions among both species play an important role in determining their breeding success and the spatial distribution of nesting sites. Our results suggest that interspecific competition over nesting sites and territories between both species, and the potential dominance of Long‐legged Buzzard, has both direct and indirect impacts on the spatial and demographic distribution of Short‐toed Eagles due to the recent establishment of Long‐legged Buzzard territories in the Judean breeding area.  相似文献

I investigated how mate quality and territory quality influencean extravagant ornament in a socially monogamous species thatdefends multipurpose territories. Northern cardinals (Cardinaliscardinalis) are a highly dichromatic, socially monogamous species,and males are a brilliant red. I conducted a 3-year field studyof northern cardinals and found that redder males produced moreoffspring in a breeding season. Two selective factors mediatedthis fitness gain. Redder males were paired with earlier breedingfemales, an established measure of mate quality in birds. Second,redder males obtained territories of higher quality, as measuredby vegetation density. Interactions among these factors werealso important in explaining variance in male reproductive success.Multivariate analysis indicated that earlier breeding increasedreproductive success independent of territory quality. In turn,territory quality contributed to male reproductive success throughits effect on nest survival and possibly through its role in attractingan earlier breeding female.  相似文献
