Do trade-offs between growth and reproduction differ between an invasive and noninvasive plant species and how do such trade-offs relate to population demographics? To help address these questions, we compared demographics for an invasive plant species, Rubus discolor, with a noninvasive congener, R. ursinus, in several populations of varying density. Removal of floral buds from reproductive canes increased the size of juvenile canes that arose from clonal sprouting in R. ursinus, suggesting a trade-off between current reproduction and growth. Removal of floral buds had no effect on growth of R. discolor. R. ursinus displayed trade-offs between reproduction (sexual and vegetative) and future growth based on negative correlations between leaf area production and both clonal sprouting and seedling production during the previous year. R. discolor did not exhibit these trade-offs. Both species had high population growth rates in low-density populations, but exhibited little or no growth in high-density populations. A life table response experiment was used to determine the underlying cause for the effect of density on population growth. For R. ursinus, lack of population growth in high-density populations was due primarily to increased mortality of clonally sprouting canes, while for R. discolor, it was due to decreased clonal cane production. Elasticity analysis revealed that clonal growth was more important than sexual reproduction for population growth of both species. However, elasticity values for sexual reproduction in R. discolor were greater in high- than low-density populations. This suggests an increased reliance on sexual reproduction in populations that had reached stable sizes, which could increase the capacity of R. discolor to disperse to new sites. Elasticity analyses were also used to simulate the efficacy of various control strategies for R. discolor. Control of this species could be attained by reducing clonal production within existing populations while reducing seed production to limit establishment of new populations.  相似文献

Egg production rates in wild populations of Acartia clausi and Centropages typicus, sampled biweekly in the Gulf of Naples from October 1985 to July 1987, showed marked seasonal fluctuations with maximum values in early spring that proceeded the annual maxima for adult female densities in summer. A positive correlation between chlorophyll a concentrations and egg production was evident only during the early spring phytoplankton bloom. A strong diminution in egg deposition occurred later in spring and continued throughout the summer notwithstanding high chlorophyll concentrations. In winter, when population abundances for adult females were lowest, egg production rates were always higher than in summer. Differences in egg production rates coincided with pronounced morphological changes between summer and winter populations of both species. The most striking of these changes consisted, in winter, in the presence of a dark brown fluid-like mass of granular material that seemed to freely bathe the gonads. The presence of this substance only during periods of elevated egg production suggests that it may enhance egg production rates when the adult population reaches minimum annual levels. Such a mechanism of self-regulation may operate to dampen the effects of environmental variability thereby contributing to maintain a conservative structure in coastal copepod communities.  相似文献

A scheme has been developed for observing diurnal changes in dissolved organic matter in the photic zone and correlating the with specific microbial fractions and their rates of growth and uptake. Particulate ATP for procaryote and protist size fractions were augmented by pigment analyses to differentiate phototroph from phagotroph dominated accumulations. A temporary daytime increase in carbohydrates of some 32% above pre-dawn threshold values accounted for 41% of the labile DOC. Polysaccharide and monosaccharide maxima were mainly associated with phagotrophic protists, the monosaccharide maxima occurring during the daytime. Apparent maximum in situ heterotrophic uptake rates of this released DOC of 9.8 g C L–1 hr–1 agree well with the growth rates of natural populations of the bacterial size fraction (picoplankton) on in situ water in diffusion culture of 5.1 g C L–1 hr–1. This growth was associated with phototroph maxima but occurred only during the afternoon and evening hours and not during the early morning and intense daylight hours. Proposed follow-up studies are outlined.  相似文献

From 1987 to 1989 we monitored population changes during summer of the collared lemming (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) and the tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus) at Pearce Point, Northwest Territories, Canada (69° 48 N, 122° 40 W). Populations on four study areas did not cycle but remained at low density (<3/ha) each year and continued at low numbers for the following 3 years (Reid et al. 1995). Lemming numbers often declined throghout the summer in spite of continous reproduction, and population recovery occurred overwinter. Heavy predation losses of radio-collared lemmings occurred each summer and this lemming population may be trapped in a predator-pit. Collared lemmings breed in winter and only because of winter population growth do these populations persist. Tundra vole numbers increased rapidly in most summers but usually declined overwinter. Tundra voles do not seem able to sustain winter reproduction in this extreme environment and this prevents them from reaching high density because of the short summer. Population growth in both these rodents could be prevented by poor food or by predation losses, and landscape patchiness may also help to prevent population growth. For lemmings we do not think that a shortage of shelter or intrinsic limitations could be restricting population increase at Pearce Point. This is the first detailed study of a non-cyclic collared lemming population.  相似文献

Fritillaria camtschatcensis can reproduce by means of both sexual reproduction and clonal multiplication. Despite prolific seed production, no seedlings have been found for several years in natural populations on Mt Hakusan. The purposes of this paper are to clarify: (i) whether population size is maintained mainly by clonal multiplication; and (ii) if this is the case, to what extent occasional seedling establishment affects population growth rate and population structure. Two permanent quadrats were placed in subalpine meadows in 1992 on Mt Hakusan. Plant size, location and reproductive states for all ramets in the quadrats were recorded every year. Projection matrices were created based on field census, and computer simulation experiments were performed. Fritillaria camtschatcensis had two types of flower, male flower and cosexual flower, and they were changeable. This is the first report on sex lability in Fritillaria. Clonal growth was more closely correlated with life-history stages, especially with sexual states than with plant size. The population growth rate, , was 1.006 for the Mizuyajiri population and 1.047 for the Nanryu population, respectively. Seedlings were found in 1996 for the first time. These facts indicate that populations of F. camtschatcensis on Mt Hakusan can usually be maintained by clonal multiplication. However, it is not yet certain whether seeds germinate every year or whether a flush of seedling emergence occurs once in every few years in natural populations. Computer simulation revealed that: (i) there was a critical germination rate above which population growth rate suddenly increased; and (ii) occasional seedling establishment could provide almost the same contribution to population growth rate as that of annual seedling establishment. These results suggest that population size can be maintained mainly by clonal multiplication, and the role of sexual reproduction lies beyond maintaining the population size in F. camtschatcensis.  相似文献

In simulated diurnal experiments withChlorella pyrenoidosa andPseudomonas fluorescens, bacterial growth was virtually confined to the daylight period and occurred at the expense of glycolate, the predominant extracellular product of the alga. Both glycolate levels and14C-DOC excretion rates were much lower in mixed algal-bacterial than in axenicChlorella cultures. This close coupling of bacterial growth to algal photosynthesis and extracellular release was also observed in Jack's Lake, but not in Lake Erie. Experimental enrichment with lake water particulates >30m suppressed the daytime growth of bacteria in Jack's Lake, but increased it dramatically in Lake Erie. Daylight doubling times for bacteria in lakewater ranged from 2 to 19 days. In mixed culture withChlorella, Pseudomonas had a doubling time of about 2 hours in the light.  相似文献

Small, aloricate ciliates dominated the biomass of heterotrophicprotists throughout the water column at the end of the periodof stratification in Lake Kinneret, Israel The integrated biomassof cilates was 5–20 times that of heterotrophic flagellatesDuring incubation experiments, ciliate growth rates in cpilimneticwater corresponded to population doubling times of 9.6–19.4h, while flagellate populations showed no growth. Most of thealiates were small forms (10–30 µm long), includingscuticocihates, choreotnchs, Coleps spp. and Colpoda spp., andappeared to be consuming bacteria, coccoid cyanobacteria, and<5 µm eukaryotic algae. Grazing rates of cihate assemblageson picoplankton in the epilimnion, as determined by the uptakeof fluorescently labeled bacteria and cyanobactena, ranged from62 to 86 nl cell1 h1 Colpoda steini, isolatedfrom lakewater, grew on a cultured freshwater Synechococcussp with a doubling time of 4.5 h, and a gross growth efficiencyof 48% The estimated daily requirements of ciliates for growthapproximately equalled total phytoplankton production. We calculatedthat ciliates in the epilimnion were clearing 4–10% ofthe bacterioplankton and cyanobactenal standing stocks per daySince this would not be sufficient food consumption to meetdaily carbon requirements of the aliates, it is likely thatthese organisms were also grazing a significant amount of autotrophicand heterotrophic eukaryotic cells in Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

Distribution, production and grazing of the copepod communitywere investigated in the northern Aegean Sea, which is characterizedby a permanent thermohaline front. Cruises were conducted alonga transect crossing the frontal area during spring and latesummer. Biomass and production of autotrophs were measured bysize fractionation and heterotrophic nanoflagellates and ciliateswere also studied. Copepod biomass, production and grazing impacton the phytoplankton and ciliate populations were estimated. The copepod community was sampled with a 45 µm net toinclude the smallest species and their developmental stages. The size, structure and distribution of the phytoplankton implythat most carbon was fixed by picoplankton during both seasonsand throughout the study area. The partitioning of carbon amongthe different plankton compartments was not a broad-based pyramidand the biomass of heterotrophs was higher than that of autotrophs, except in the non-frontal region during spring. Copepod biomasswas substantially higher in the frontal area. Our results showedthat the small-sized copepods (calanoids and cyclopoids) dominatedin terms of biomass and production, but also had a greater influenceon the efficiency of the trophic coupling between the primaryproducers and the protozooplankton than the larger species, stressing their importance in the northern Aegean Sea and theEastern Mediterranean in general.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to analyze the homogamy previously detected between two natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster from Brazzaville. It is shown that mating isolation was still maintained under laboratory conditions 10 years after the populations samples were trapped. Isolation seemed to be due mainly to pre-mating isolation and we checked for any suggestion of post-mating mortality of hybrids. Pre-mating isolation was not symmetrical, and significant 2 values were found in 3/4 possible 3-way mating choice experiments. The only exception involved a male from the countryside and two females (one from each population) for which no significant mating preference was detected. Mortality of hybrids was intermediate between those of the parental strains showing a clear maternal effect and the existence of partial dominance. Major differences in the cuticular hydrocarbons were also found and they could account for the isolation. These findings in populations from African breweries indicate that they are closely related to European ones, suggesting that this phenomenon is not a case of sympatric speciation, but probably attributable to the reintroduction of an allopatric population.  相似文献

Key features of photosynthetic picoplankton populations were compared during 1988 in ten lakes in northern England ranging from oligotrophic to slightly eutrophic; two of the three eutrophic lakes were shallow and lacked a thermocline. Measurements were made at 0.5 m depth of temperature, total chlorophyll a, chlorophyll-containing picoplankton cell density, mean picoplankton cell volume and percentage of phycoerythrin-rich cells in the total picoplankton population. All lakes showed maxima for total chlorophyll concentration and picoplankton cell density in mid- to late summer. The maximum value for picoplankton density ranged from 3.4 × 103 (Esthwaite Water) to 1.3 × 106 cells ml−1 (Ennerdale Water). There was a significant negative relationship (p < 0.05) between log10 of maximum picoplankton cell density and maximum total chlorophyll, the latter being taken as an indicator of lake trophic status. The ratio of maximum to minimum picoplankton density during the year in a particular lake ranged from 39 to 2360 and showed no obvious relationship to lake type. Overall, the seasonal range in picoplankton density was about one order of magnitude greater than the range in total chlorophyll a, but there were considerable differences between lakes. Phycoerythrin-rich picoplankton as a percentage of total picoplankton reached a maximum in summer in all lakes. Values were always very low (<5%) in the two shallow eutrophic lakes, but reached 97% and over in the four most oligotrophic lakes. In two of the oligotrophic lakes, Wast-water and Ennerdale Water, phycoerythrin-rich picoplankton was a major component of the summer phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

When white-tailed deer populations reach high densities, they have negative and often dramatic effects on forest herb populations. However, it is not clear how deer affect the demographic processes of plant populations. We examined how the structure and dynamics of Trillium grandiflorum (Michx.) Salisb. populations are affected by deer browsing in the Upper Great Lakes region by sampling populations from nine study sites in a forested landscape in 1998 and 1999. We constructed a stage-based matrix population model for the regional population. Our model indicated that the long-term growth rate of the population to be –3.56% per year ( = 0.965). Mortality rates were highest for seeds (97.5%) followed by seedlings (29.1%), and lower for all remaining stage classes (4.9 to 8.5%). The observed stage distribution significantly differed from the stable stage distribution, and the damping ratio ( = 1.103) indicated the population would not reach its stable stage distribution anytime soon. In the absence of deer browsing, the long-term growth rate would improve to between –3.46% and –1.61% per year. A moderate drought during the study could account for the negative population growth rate, but deer browsing accelerates the rate of decline. Population growth is most sensitive to the proportion of plants remaining in the nonflowering stage, and deer browsing reduces this proportion. Browsing damage was relatively low in this study (5.4% of stems in 1998, 11.5% in 1999) compared to another study of browsing impacts on T. grandiflorum, indicating deer could have far more severe demographic consequences in populations subject to higher levels of browsing.  相似文献

In 1964, nabam (sodium ethylene bisdithiocarbamate), water and three amounts of nitrogen fertilizer were applied to spring wheat on soil treated and untreated with formalin. The experiment lasted for 3 years during which there were eight different formalin, no–formalin sequences. The nabam and irrigation treatments were discontinued when it was found they did not affect the principal pathogens present, the cereal cyst nematode Heterodera avenae and the take–all fungus Ophiobolus graminis. Formalin increased grain and straw yields in the year in which it was applied but led to increased H. avenae populations which adversely affected the succeeding crop. Formalin controlled O. graminis in the year it was applied except on land treated for the first time in 1966. H. avenae seemed to be the main check to growth until about June, and O. graminis later. At the end of the experiment, total grain yields and nematode soil populations were greatest in the plots treated with formalin each year and least in those never treated with formalin. Yield loss from either O. graminis or H. avenae alone could not be assessed because formalin usually controlled both during the season in which it was applied and both were present in untreated plots. However, in 1965, some comparisons of the effects of each pathogen were possible when one occurred in the presence of differing amounts of the other. A doubling of total grain yield over 3 years was accompanied by an eightfold increase in H. avenae in sequences of continuous formalin or formalin 1964 and 1965, whereas yield increases caused by extra nitrogen were not matched by such a big increase in H. avenae. This suggests that formalin might be affecting H. avenae through factors other than increased plant size and vigour, which in themselves would tend to encourage larger nematode populations. In the absence of formalin, H. avenae soil populations either fell or failed to increase.  相似文献

Moist tussock tundra, dominated by the sedge Eriophorum vaginatum L., covers approximately 3.36 × 108 km2 of arctic surface area along with large amounts of subarctic land area. Eriophorum vaginatum exhibits ecotypic differentiation along latitudinal gradients in Alaska. While ecotypic differentiation may be beneficial during periods of climate stability, it may be detrimental as climate changes, causing adaptational lag. Following harvest of a 30-year reciprocal transplant experiment, age-specific demographic data on E. vaginatum tillers were collected to parameterize a Leslie matrix. Yellow Taxi analysis, based on Tukey's Jackknife, was used to determine mean pseudovalues of tiller population growth rate () for four source populations of E. vaginatum tussocks that were transplanted to each of three gardens along a latitudinal gradient. Source populations responded differentially along the latitudinal gradient. Survival and daughter tiller production influenced differences seen at the mid-latitude garden, and the overall tiller population performance was generally improved by northward transplanting relative to southward transplanting. A comparison of home-source and away-source within the same transplant garden indicates no home-site advantage. Although populations were still growing when transplanted to home-sites ( = 1.056), tiller population growth rate increased as ΔGDD became more negative relative to the home site (i.e., as tussocks were transplanted north). These results imply that populations are affected by climate gradients in a manner consistent with adaptational lag. This study documenting the response of high-latitude ecotypes to climate gradients may be an indication of the possible future effects of climate shift in more southern latitudes.  相似文献

The abundance and relative importance of autotrophic picoplankton were investigated in two lakes of different trophic status. In the eutrophic lake, measurements of primary production were performed on water samples in situ and in a light incubator three times during the day whereas for the oligotrophic lake, only one measurement of primary production was performed on water samples in the incubator. Dark-carbon losses of phytoplankton from Lake Loosdrecht were investigated in time series. Cell numbers of autotrophic picoplankton in eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (3.2 × 104 cells ml–1) were lower than in meso-oligotrophic Lake Maarsseveen (9.8 and 11.4 × 104 cells ml–1 at the surface and bottom respectively). In the phytoplankton of both lakes the ratio of picoplankton production increased with decreasing light intensity. In Lake Loosdrecht depth-integrated contribution of picoplankton to total photosynthesis was less than 4%. The P-I-relationship showed diurnal variations in light saturated photosynthesis, while light limited carbon uptake remained constant during the day. Dark carbon losses from short-term labelled phytoplankton during the first 12 hours of the night period accounted for 10–25% of material fixed during the preceeding light period.  相似文献

Free-swimming Annelida occasionally occur in very high densities in WWTPs (WasteWater Treatment Plants) and are nowadays applied for waste sludge reduction, but their growth is uncontrollable. In order to get more insight in the population dynamics of these free-swimming Annelida, and relate their presence to process characteristics, nine ATs (Aeration Tanks) of four Dutch WWTPs were regularly sampled over a 2.5-year period. For each species, peak periods in worm population growth were defined and population doubling times and half-lives calculated. Peak periods and doubling times were compared to those in natural systems. Process characteristics were obtained from the plant operators and related to the worm populations by multivariate analysis for the first time in large-scale WWTPs. The species composition in the WWTPs was limited and the most abundant free-swimming Annelida were in decreasing order Nais spp., Aeolosoma hemprichi, Pristina aequiseta, Aeolosoma variegatum, Chaetogaster diastrophus, and Aeolosoma tenebrarum. This latter species had never been found before in WWTPs. Worm absence sometimes coincided with the presence of anoxic zones, but this was possibly overcome by higher temperatures in the WWTPs. Worms were present all year round, even in winter, but no yearly recurrences of population peaks were observed, probably as a result of stable food supply and temperature, and the lack of predation in the WWTPs. Peak periods were similar between the ATs of each WWTP. The duration of the peak periods was on average 2–3 months for each species and the population doubling times in the peak periods were short (on average 2–6 days), which also corresponds to a stable favorable environment. The disappearance of worm populations from the WWTPs was presumably caused by declining asexual reproduction and subsequent removal with the waste sludge. Multivariate analysis indicated that 36% of the variability in worm populations was due to spatial and temporal patterns only. In addition, no more than 4% of the variability in worm populations was related to variations in process characteristics only and worm presence was usually associated with better sludge settleability. In conclusion, our data from large-scale WWTPs suggest that growth of free-swimming Annelida still seems uncontrollable and that their effects on treatment processes are unclear, which makes stable application in wastewater treatment for sludge reduction difficult. In experimental populations ofDrosophila melanogaster lethal chromosomes with dominant markers and inversions were introduced and the frequency changes of the markers studied during a period of several generations. The base populations of the various experiments differed from each other with respect to their degree of heterozygosity. Monochromosomal populations were isogenic for a quasinormal + chromosome, dichromosomal populations contained the genetic material of two different + chromosomes, trichromosomal of three, tetrachromosomal of four, hexachromosomal of six and polychromosomal populations of many normal chromosomes. Marker chromosomes with the dominant genesLCy, Cy, Pm orD respectively were added to the populations with an initial frequency of 16,6 per cent. The fate of the dominant markers was different in different populations. In some the marker chromosome reached equilibrium frequencies, in others they were eliminated with variable speed. As a rule the lethal marker chromosomes were accepted by monochromosomal populations; however, they were eliminated from populations with a higher degree of heterozygosity. Since in all populations one genotype, namely the homozygote for the marker chromosome, was lethal, the adaptive values c of the +/LCy, +/Cy, +/Pm or +/D heterozygotes could easily be calculated from the experimental data. This c value can be used as a measure for the combining ability of the marker chromosomes. It could be shown that c depends on the degree of heterozygosity of a population or in other words that the average degree of heterozygosity of the marker free individuals determines the selection processes. An equation can be arrived at which fits the experimental results very well if superiority of heterozygous +/+ individuals over +/+ homozygotes is assumed. From that it was concluded that heterosis is the determining variable in our experiments. An attempt was undertaken in order to decide if in our case the observed heterosis was due to dominance or to overdominance. It was postulated that in di-, tri-, tetra- or hexachromosomal populations the adaptive values of the marker free normals should progressively increase if recessive detrimental genes are the cause of heterosis but not if heterozygosity on many loci leads to overdominance. The a values of the +/+ individuals were ealeulated from the frequency changes of the marker chromosomes for each subsequent two-generation period. Unfortunately only two different dichromosomal populations were available. These showed increasing adaptive values for the normals. The tri-, tetra-, and hexachromosomal populations, however, gave different results, some with increasing, some with fluctuating adaptive values. From that it was concluded that heterosis can be due in one case to dominance and in the other to overdominance. In either case, the recessive genetic load may be rather important as a determinating factor in the dynamics of populations.Dedicated to Prof. Th. Dobzhansky on the occasion of his seventieth birthday in deepest gratitude.  相似文献

Long-term effective population size is expected, and has been shown, to correlate positively with various measures of population fitness. Here we examine the interacting effects of population size (as a surrogate for genetic factors) and prey consumption rates (as a surrogate for environmental quality) on fecundity in two sympatric species of wolf spider, Rabidosa punctulata and Rabidosa rabida. Population size was estimated in each of seven genetically isolated populations in each of 3 years using mark-recapture methods. Fecundity was estimated as the mean number of live offspring produced by ∼15 females sampled from each population of each species each year for 3 years. Prey consumption rates were estimated by sampling ∼300 spiders per population per year and assaying the proportion of spiders with prey. Larger populations have higher fecundity and more genetic diversity than smaller populations. Variation among populations in fecundity for a given year could be attributed most strongly to differences in population size, with variation in prey consumption rates and the interaction between population size and prey consumption playing smaller but still important roles. During the most stressful environmental conditions, the smallest populations of both species experienced disproportionately low-fecundity rates, more than doubling the estimated number of lethal equivalents during those years. The evidence presented in this paper for inbreeding-environment interactions at the population level and further evidence for a log-linear relationship between population size and fitness have important implications for conservation.  相似文献

  • 1 Picoplankton community production (0.2–2μm) was investigated over 3 months, June-September 1991, in Llyn Padarn, a mesotrophic upland lake in north Wales.
  • 2 The picoplankton was differentiated into autotrophic algae (<1–3μm) and heterotrophic bacteria (<0.2–1 μm) using differential filtration through a 1 μm pore size Nuclepore filter.
  • 3 Efficient separation of these distinct metabolic constituents of picoplankton was obtained. A good correlation (r= 0.81, P < 0.001) was found between physical separation of bacterial and picoalgal cells from fluorescence microscopy and the distribution of heterotrophic metabolic activity between different cell size fractions measured by uptake of 14C-glucose.
  • 4 Picoplankton community production was differentiated into the ‘absolute’ autotrophic production by picoalgae, corrected for overestimation due to retention of bacteria with the picoalgae, and the heterotrophic component, bacterial uptake of ‘extracellular organic carbon’ (EOC), derived from the entire phytoplankton community.
  • 5 The heterotrophic contribution to picoplankton community production ranged from 88 to 1%, mean value 55% of total. Autotrophic picoplankton production was dominant in June and July, but in August and September heterotrophic uptake of EOC was the major input to picoplankton community production.
  • 6 During the 3 months, the mean contributions to plankton production were autotrophic picoplankton 10.3%, heterotrophic bacterial uptake of EOC 9.7%, EOC in lake water 11.6% and phytoplankton (>3μm) 68.3%.
  • 7 Bacteria accounted for about half the picopfankton community production via uptake of EOC. Thus although autotrophic picoplankton were ubiquitous, it is likely that their contribution via primary production to the carbon balance of planktonic environments has been overestimated in previous studies.

The availability and importance of food sources for growth of Daphnia longispina L. from a highly coloured fishless lake with anoxic hypolimnion were assessed by combining in situ and laboratory experiments. In in situ experiments populations were enclosed in tubes with natural temperature stratification and with or without anoxic hypolimnion. In the laboratory experiments the importance of food source (littoral zone vs pelagic epilimnion) was assessed by enclosing moss thalli and a natural zooplankton population in a large-scale flow-through system supplying food for experimental Daphnia. Growth of juveniles of Daphnia in epilimnetic water was determined in batch culture experiments and the importance of increasing concentrations of bacteria and algae for their growth and development was investigated with a small-scale flow-through system. Access to the anoxic hypolimnion enhanced the growth of Daphnia by 23–24%. Growth rates in the tubes with anoxic hypolimnion were 0.36 and 0.16 d–1 in July and August respectively. In tubes without anoxia the corresponding values were 0.29 and 0.13. In batch-cultures the highest growth rate determined was 0.16 and the overall rates were lower than in in situ experiments. In batch culture Daphnia was able to grow in darkness for 10 days with a rate of 0.16. In the large-scale flow-through system Daphnia population fed with littoral water reproduced well despite the low concentration of algae and increased its number by a factor of c. 32 in 10 days. However, the animals were small and net production of Daphnia population thus lower under the littoral influence than in the control treatment. Population could survive and grew slowly on pelagial water processed by a natural zooplankton community and with very little algae left. It is thus possible that bacteria serve as a life-support system enabling the population survival over periods of algal shortage. Small-scale flow-through experiments revealed that Daphnia longispina is able to mature and reproduce on a bacterial diet if the food concentration is high enough and Daphnia on bacterial food could achieve growth rates similar to those on an algal diet. The threshold food level for Daphnia longispina was estimated to be c. 18.5 g C 1–1. Detrital material is of limited value in nutrition of Daphnia even in a lake where more than 75% of carbon is bound in particulate detritus.  相似文献

In situ incubations of natural autotrophic picoplankton populations during a 15 month study were used to test the frequency of dividing cells proceduresin estimating phototrophic picoplankton growth rates. These rates were estimated using dilution experiments and compared to the average frequency of dividing cells over the same time interval. The regression equation of µ = 2.85 × 10–3 (FDC) + 0.022 was calculated to relate autotrophic picoplankton growth rate and the frequency of dividing cells in this study. The resulting relationship was compared to 14C-bicarbonate derived growth rates. Productivity estimates using frequency of dividing cells correlated closely to sodium 14C-bicarbonate results and indicated a range of productivity by autotrophic picoplankton of 55.6% the total phytoplankton primary productivity in July to a January rate of 2.3%. Annual autotrophic picoplankton abundance varied seasonally in the lower Chesapeake Bay ranging from 7.26 × 106 cells 1–1 in winter to 9.28 × 108 cells 1–1 during late summer.  相似文献
