Grab samples of drinking water collected from reservoirs and from creeks flowing over pristine land, farmland or land having mixed use were analysed for their physicochemical and microbiological characteristics. A significant difference between sites for conductivity and sites for pH was noted using a two-way anova . No significant interactions were detected between any of the other parameters: Giardia , Cryptosporidium , Escherichia coli , coliforms, plate count, turbidity or rainfall.  相似文献

Ijanikin is a typical Yoruba village in the rain forest belt area of Southern Nigeria. The childhood years in this community are fraught with the danger of numerous communicable diseases, compounded by inadequate supply of good quality foods to meet normal requirements and allow a margin of safety for the stress of infections. Overcrowding and poor ventilation in the houses are important factors in the spread of communicable diseases, while poor sanitation and deficient personal hygiene account for the heavy burden of intestinal parasitoses. Improvement in the health of this and other similar rural communities would require the provision of clean water supply, installation of essential sanitary facilities, provision of adequate food supply, and a well-planned and carefully executed health education programme.  相似文献

Background

Public health provision in England is undergoing dramatic changes. Currently established partnerships are thus likely to be significantly disrupted by the radical reforms outlined in the Public Health White Paper. We therefore explored the process of partnership working in public health, in order to better understand the potential opportunities and threats associated with the proposed changes.

Methodology/Principal Findings

70 participants took part in an in-depth qualitative study involving 40 semi-structured interviews and three focus group discussions. Participants were senior and middle grade public health decision makers working in Primary Care Trusts, Local Authorities, Department of Health, academia, General Practice and Hospital Trusts and the third sector in England. Despite mature arrangements for partnership working in many areas, and much support for joint working in principle, many important barriers exist. These include cultural issues such as a lack of shared values and language, the inherent complexity of intersectoral collaboration for public health, and macro issues including political and resource constraints. There is particular uncertainty and anxiety about the future of joint working relating to the availability and distribution of scarce and diminishing financial resources. There is also the concern that existing effective collaborative networks may be completely disrupted as the proposed changes unfold. The extent to which the proposed reforms might mitigate or potentiate these issues remains unclear. However the threats currently remain more salient than opportunities.

Conclusions

The current re-organisation of public health offers real opportunity to address some of the barriers to partnership working identified in this study. However, significant threats exist. These include the breakup of established networks, and the risk of cost cutting on effective public health interventions.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation often results in significant degradation of the structure and composition of remnant natural vegetation, leading to substantial biodiversity decline. Ants are an ecologically dominant faunal group known to be sensitive to vegetation degradation following fragmentation. We examined ant diversity and composition in relation to changes in vegetation structure in remnant coastal vegetation in the global biodiversity hotspot of southwestern Western Australia. The key features of vegetation structure driving the species and functional diversity and composition of ant communities were measures of cover of vegetation and bare ground. However, these effects were highly idiosyncratic at the species level. Cluster analyses based on plant species composition classified plots into two groups corresponding to relatively intact and degraded vegetation respectively. Although systematic changes in plant diversity and vegetation structure were observed between the two groups, key features from an ant perspective (native plant cover and bare ground) remained unchanged. Vegetation degradation consequently had little overall effect on ant species composition and functional diversity. The major disturbance–related impact on ant communities was through invasion by exotic ants, especially Pheidole megacephala; however, this occurred only in close proximity to development. Our results suggest that the priority for conserving ant diversity in our coastal dune system is the prevention of invasion by exotic species.  相似文献

To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality level, metazoan parasites were examined in 157 specimens of chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.), sampled in four lowland water courses (northern Italy): Ticino river (unpolluted), Naviglio Pavese Canal (slightly polluted), Lambro river near the Merone village (polluted) and near Monza (severely polluted). Dactylogyrus vistulae, Paradiplozoon ergensi, Bucephalus polymorphus, Acanthocephalus anguillae and larval stages of Tylodelphys clavata were found in all the sampled sites. The distribution of Lamproglena pulchella and Pomphorhynchus laevis was limited to the unpolluted and slightly polluted river sectors, while Asymphylodora tincae, glochidia, along with larval stages of Diplostomum spathaceum, were absent in the severely polluted site. The variability of the calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity), the degree of interactivity among parasites, as well as parameters of species richness and diversity suggest that the structure of parasite communities are affected by the water contamination level.  相似文献

For randomly selected 50 villages in Bangladesh, an interview survey with a structured questionnaire was conducted to reveal their perception on the environmental, health and economic conditions at present and for the past 10-year change. The eight following items were analyzed in this paper: air pollution and water pollution, which represent environmental conditions with close relation to health conditions, soil degradation and deforestation, which represent environmental conditions with close relation to economic conditions, epidemic diseases and malnutrition, which represent health conditions, and poverty and jobless, which represent economic conditions. Among the 50 villages, deforestation was most frequently perceived serious at present and worsened in the past 10 years. Of the remaining seven items, those related to economic conditions were more seriously perceived than those related to health and environmental conditions. As revealed by the cluster analysis for the inter-item relations, epidemic diseases, which formed the same cluster with the environmental items, were recognized less serious whereas malnutrition, which formed the same cluster with the economic items, was recognized more serious. These findings are useful not only for rural development programs but also for mitigation programs toward health and environmental hazards in Bangladesh.  相似文献

The study has revealed that the concentration of HBsAg preparations is simple and easily performed with the use of polyacrylamide, but not dextran gels. Rheophoresis has been shown to be a more sensitive method of indication than countercurrent immunoelectrophoresis. Water is necessary to life so when supplied as drinking water to consumers, a satisfactory quality must be maintained. In Egypt, infectious intestinal diseases are the major cause of hospitalization in almost all regions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of treated and untreated water samples from urban and rural communities. Thirty-five samples of treated (chlorinated) water from taps, 25 samples of bottled water and 15 samples of hand pump (untreated) water collected from different cities alongside the River Nile during the winter of 2007 were bacteriologically tested for safety as drinking water. This study indicated good quality of tap water and bottled water. The untreated water samples (hand pumps) were, however, slightly contaminated by faecal coliforms, faecal enterococci, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella and Shigella. Consequently, the consumers in the villages receiving water through hand pumps are often exposed to the risk of water-borne diseases due to inadequate treatment of the raw water. Therefore, there are guidelines necessary to protect groundwater quality. Moreover, PCR-amplified by some functional gene fragments such as dctA, dcuB, frdA, dcuS and dcuR genes of the E. coli was adapted for use as a non-cultivation-based molecular approach for detection of E. coli populations from water samples without the need for pure and identified cultures.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To verij5 the efficacy of the quality control (QC) program in a cytologic laboratwy with a rapid rescreening (RR) protocol. STUDY DESIGN: RR, according to the Turret RR method, of all samples initially screened as negative at the Laboratory of Cytology, Adolfo Lutz Institute, was performed. The slides were reviewed for 60 seconds. Suspect smears were fully checked by 2 reviewers to determine the final diagnoses. A total of 2954 sequential cytologic results were considered in this study. Of the 2954, 2568 (86.9%) were considered initially negative according to our internal QC, and these cases underwent RR. Also, 10% were randomly selected from these negative cases for full reviewing. The internal QC in our laboratory includes review of cases selected according to clinical and cytomorphologic criteria. RESULTS: Among the 2954 total cases, QC detected 386 (13%) atypias with final diagnoses reported according to The Bethesda System 2001 as follows: 82 (2.18%) low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSILs), 35 (1.18%) high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs), 2 (0.06%) squamous cell carcinomas, 105 (3.5%) atypical cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US), 4 (0.12%) atypical endocervical cells (AECs) and 158 (5.3%) unsatisfactory samples. RR of 2568 smears initially considered negative selected 194 (7.5%) slides. Of the 194, 146 (75.3%) were negative, 28 (14.4%) ASC-US, 5 (2.6%) AEC, 1 (0.5%) LSIL and 14 (7.2%) unsatisfactory. Full review of a 10% random fraction of the 2568 cases interpreted as negative did not detect lesions but did detect 5 (1.95%) unsatisfactory samples. CONCLUSION: Internal QC used in our laboratory based on clinical and cytomorphologic criteria to select cases for review proved to be an efficient method of detecting HSIL and cervical cancer. The consensus basis of this program strongly limits the false positive and false negative rates and also provides subjects with continuing education. One hundred percent RR is more efficient than 10% full reviewing in detecting cervical abnormalities.  相似文献

A health diary study was conducted to examine the incidence and nature of health problems and illness behavior among rural residents in Japan. Attention was paid in particular to the utilization of folk medicine or alternative practitioners in the context of illness behavior. One hundred and sixty-one health problems were recorded over a 4-week diary period by 28 housewives aged 35–64 years. Headache, tiredness and gastrointestinal problems were among the most common problems. Emotional/psychological problems, the most frequently recorded problems in the health diary studies conducted in the United States or England, were recorded by only 3 participants. Only 6 problems (3.7 percent) resulted in consulting a doctor. Three women utilized an acupuncturist, shinkyshi, during the diary period. Self-care, such as resting by lying down, using home remedies and self-medication including household drugs, Toyama kusuri and folk medicine, was practiced for 101 problems (62.7 percent). Folk medicine or alternative practitioners played important roles in the health seeking process. The health diary method was shown to be suitable not only to Western communities but also in a rural Japanese context.  相似文献

The quality of water in aquatic systems is subject to temporal and spatial variations due to varying effects of natural and anthropogenic factors. This study assessed the dynamics of water quality in the Boro-Thamalakane-Boteti river system along an upstream–downstream gradient above and below Maun during February, May, September and December 2012. Temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, Escherichia coli and faecal streptococci were monitored in the settlements of Boro, Maun, Xobe, Samedupi, Chanoga and Motopi along the river system. Comparisons of water quality among settlements using ANOVA and Tukey's honest significant difference test highlighted a significant decline in water quality from upstream to downstream, indicated by increases in microbial numbers and turbidity. The quality of water improved as the water level rose during the peak flooding season in September and declined thereafter. This study highlights the possible influence of human settlements and associated developments on waterbodies, and lends strong support to management efforts to maintain river water quality to ensure the suitability of the water for various ecosystem uses.  相似文献
