An ethnopharmacological survey was carried out to collect information on the use of seven medicinal plants in rural areas in the nearby regions of Bamako, Mali. The plants were Opilia celtidifolia, Anthocleista djalonensis, Erythrina senegalensis, Heliotropium indicum, Trichilia emetica, Piliostigma thonningii and Cochlospermum tinctorium About 50 medical indications were reported for the use of these plants in traditional medicine. The most frequent ailments reported were malaria, abdominal pain and dermatitis. The highest number of usages was reported for the treatment of malaria (22%). The majority of the remedies were prepared from freshly collected plant material from the wild and from a single species only. They were mainly taken orally, but some applications were prepared with a mixture of plants or ingredients such as honey, sugar, salt, ginger and pepper. Decoction of the leaves was the main form of preparation (65%) and leaf powder was mostly used for the preparation of infusions (13%). The part of the plants most frequently used was the leaves. There was a high degree of informant consensus for the species and their medicinal indications between the healers interviewed. The results of this study showed that people are still dependent on medicinal plants in these rural areas of Mali.  相似文献

IntroductionResistance of cancer cells to chemotherapy has become a worldwide concern. Naturally occuring isoflavonoids possess a variety of biological activities including anti-cancer effects. The present study was aimed at investigating the cytotoxicity and the modes of action of three naturally occuring isoflavonoids, neobavaisoflavone (1), sigmoidin H (2) and a pterocarpan that is a special type of isoflavonoid, isoneorautenol (3) against a panel of nine cancer cell lines, including various sensitive and drug-resistant phenotypes.MethodsThe cytotoxicity of the compounds was determined using a resazurin reduction assay, whereas the caspase-Glo assay was used to detect the activation of caspases 3/7, caspase 8 and caspase 9 in cells treated with compounds 3. Flow cytometry was used for cell cycle analysis and detection of apoptotic cells, analysis of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) as well as measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS).ResultsCompounds 3 showed significant cytotoxicity toward sensitive and drug-resistant cancer cell lines. Compounds 1 and 2 were selectively active, and IC50 values below 115 μM were obtained on 6/9 and 4/9 cell lines respectively with values ranging from 42.93 μM (toward CCRF-CEM cells) to 114.64 μM [against HCT116 (p53+/+) cells] for 1 and 25.59 μM (toward U87MG) to 110.51 μM [against HCT116 (p53+/+) cells] for 2. IC50 values ranging from 2.67 μM (against MDA-MB 237BCRP cells) to 21.84 (toward U87MG) were measured for compound 3 and between 0.20 μM (toward CCRF-CEM cells) and 195.12 μM (toward CEM/ADR5000 cells) for doxorubicin as control drug. BCRP-transfected MDA-MB-231 cells, HCT116 (p53+/+) and U87MG.ΔEGFR cells were hypersensitive (collateral sensitive) to compound 3 as compared to their counterpart cell lines. Compound 3 induced apoptosis in CCRF-CEM cells via activation of caspases 3/7, 8 and 9 as well as the loss of MMP and increased ROS production.ConclusionsThe cytotoxicity of the studied isoflavonoids and especially the pterocarpan 3 deserve more detailed exploration in the future to develop novel anticancer drugs against sensitive and otherwise drug-resistant phenotypes.  相似文献

A full accounting of biological robustness remains elusive; both in terms of the mechanisms by which robustness is achieved and the forces that have caused robustness to grow over evolutionary time. Although its importance to topics such as ecosystem services and resilience is well recognized, the broader relationship between robustness and evolution is only starting to be fully appreciated. A renewed interest in this relationship has been prompted by evidence that mutational robustness can play a positive role in the discovery of adaptive innovations (evolvability) and evidence of an intimate relationship between robustness and complexity in biology.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify plant species among the diverse flora of the caatinga ecosystem that are used therapeutically. Research was undertaken in the municipalities of Piranhas and Delmiro Gouveia, in the Xingó region (state of Alagoas, NE Brazil). In order to identify the medicinal plants used in this region, semi-structured questionnaires were applied. The species cited were collected and sent to the Xingó Herbarium for taxonomic analysis. The relative importance (RI) of each species cited was calculated to verify their cultural importance. The therapeutic indications attributed to the species were classified under 16 body systems. A total of 187 medicinal species were cited, from 64 families and 128 genera. The main indications for medicinal plant use were against common colds, bronchitis, cardiovascular problems, kidney problems, inflammations in general, and as tranquilizers. Approximately 16% (30 plant species) were versatile in relation to their use, with an Relative Importance value over 1, having been indicated for up to nine body systems. The body systems that stood out the most were: the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, and infectious diseases. Most cited plant parts used for medicinal purposes were flowers, leaves, and inner stem bark.  相似文献

Background

The Samburu region of northern Kenya is undergoing significant change, driven by factors including greater value on formal education, improvements in infrastructure and development, a shift from community to private ownership of land, increased sedentary lifestyles and global climate change. One outcome of these changes are an increasingly greater likelihood for adolescent boys to be enrolled in school rather than herding livestock on behalf of the family in a landscape shared with numerous native vegetation and wildlife species.

Methods

This study compared identification and knowledge of native plant species between boys enrolled in school with boys of similar age but primary responsibility as herders, called moran. Study participants walked an approximately 100 m path with 10 flagged points in which they were asked to identify any plant species at that point and associated facts of each species, within a 1 m radius.

Results

On average, moran identified 38 species compared to 20 for students, including nearly 13 (of a possible 15) species considered to have high cultural significance. Students identified an average of 8.6 culturally-significant plants. Further, moran shared nearly 18 correct facts about the plants, compared with ten for students. In addition, herding frequency was the only significant predictor of plant identification in a linear regression.

Conclusion

The results demonstrate that while formal education undoubtedly provides benefits to students, attendance in school in lieu of the traditional role of herders has consequences on young men in Samburu related to ability to identify native and culturally-significant plants. This further shows the importance for communities like those in Samburu undergoing change need to develop alternative options to transmit local traditional knowledge to its younger generations.

Background

We test whether traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) about how to make an item predicts a person’s skill at making it among the Tsimane’ (Bolivia). The rationale for this research is that the failure to distinguish between knowledge and skill might account for some of the conflicting results about the relationships between TEK, human health, and economic development.

Methods

We test the association between a commonly-used measure of individual knowledge (cultural consensus analysis) about how to make an arrow or a bag and a measure of individual skill at making these items, using ordinary least-squares regression. The study consists of 43 participants from 3 villages.

Results

We find no association between our measures of knowledge and skill (core model, p?>?0.5,?R 2 ?=?.132).

Conclusions

While we cannot rule out the possibility of a real association between these phenomena, we interpret our findings as support for the claim that researchers should distinguish between methods to measure knowledge and skill when studying trends in TEK.

In this study, a class of dynamic models based on metabolic reaction pathways is analyzed, showing that systems with complex intracellular reaction networks can be represented by macroscopic reactions relating extracellular components only. Based on rigorous assumptions, the model reduction procedure is systematic and allows an equivalent 'input-output' representation of the system to be derived. biomaRt is a new Bioconductor package that integrates BioMart data resources with data analysis software in Bioconductor. It can annotate a wide range of gene or gene product identifiers (e.g. Entrez-Gene and Affymetrix probe identifiers) with information such as gene symbol, chromosomal coordinates, Gene Ontology and OMIM annotation. Furthermore biomaRt enables retrieval of genomic sequences and single nucleotide polymorphism information, which can be used in data analysis. Fast and up-to-date data retrieval is possible as the package executes direct SQL queries to the BioMart databases (e.g. Ensembl). The biomaRt package provides a tight integration of large, public or locally installed BioMart databases with data analysis in Bioconductor creating a powerful environment for biological data mining.  相似文献

Relationships between behaviour, measured in many standard laboratory settings, and biological fitness are often obscure. By making inferences from the genetic architecture revealed in psychogenetic studies, links between behaviour and biological fitness can be forged. To support these inferences, information is needed about the genetic architecture underlying behaviour which has unequivocal links to fitness. In this study, water-escape in rats is related a priori to fitness. Weanling rats from the Roman High Avoidance and Roman Low Avoidance strains and their reciprocal F1 crosses are tested in a water-escape apparatus. A strong directional dominance found for rapid escape is in keeping with the assumptions made and confirms the test as a useful tool for psychogenetic studies of rats.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To compare proportions of low birthweight babies and mean heights of schoolchildren between rural and urban areas at different levels of social deprivation. DESIGN--Cross sectional population based study classifying cases by Townsend material deprivation index of enumeration district of residence and by rural areas, small towns, and large towns. SETTING--Northumberland Health District. SUBJECTS--18,930 singleton infants delivered alive during January 1985 to September 1990 and resident in Northumberland in October 1990; 9055 children aged 5 to 8 1/2 years attending Northumberland schools in the winter of 1989-90. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Odds ratios for birth weight less than 2800 g; difference in mean height measured by standard deviation (SD) score. RESULTS--Between the most deprived and most affluent 20% of enumeration districts the odds ratio for low birth weight adjusted for rural or urban setting was 1.71 (95% confidence interval 1.51 to 1.93) and the difference in mean height -0.232 SD score (-0.290 to -0.174). Between large towns and rural areas the odds ratio for low birth weight adjusted for deprivation was 1.37 (1.23 to 1.53) and the difference in mean height -0.162 SD score (-0.214 to -0.110). Results for small towns were intermediate between large towns and rural areas. CONCLUSIONS--Inequalities in birth weight and height exist in all rural and urban settings between deprived and affluent areas. In addition, there is substantial disadvantage to living in urban areas compared with rural areas which results from social or environmental factors unrelated to current levels of deprivation.  相似文献

Thanks to spectacular advances in the techniques for identifying proteins separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis and in methods for large-scale analysis of proteome variations, proteomics is becoming an essential methodology in various fields of plant biology. In the study of pleiotropic effects of mutants and in the analysis of responses to hormones and to environmental changes, the identification of involved metabolic pathways can be deduced from the function of affected proteins. In molecular quantitative genetics, proteomics can be used to map translated genes and loci controlling their expression, which can be used to identify proteins accounting for the variation of complex phenotypic traits. Linking gene expression to cell metabolism on the one hand and to genetic maps on the other, proteomics is a central tool for functional genomics.  相似文献

An hydrolate (also known as hydrosol, floral water, aromatic water, or herbal water) is a distillate which is a product of condensation obtained after an essential oil distillation isolation procedure. Hydrolates are colloidal suspensions composed of a continuous phase, the distilled water, and a dispersed phase, the emulsion of essential oil droplets and water-soluble components, namely oxygen-containing compounds. The movement towards a circular economy, has increased the interest in the essential oil industry co-products, such as hydrolates. Hydrolates composition were mostly studied based on their volatile constituents. Moreover, they showed a diverse range of biological properties, with potential application in food, beverages, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in the agroforest sector. Nevertheless, the information is fragmented and dispersed under the different hydrolates designations. In the present review, the main volatile components of 362 hydrolates obtained from 194 species from 50 families is described, and the information on the corresponding essential oil main components is detailed. Additionally, the methodologies of extraction and analysis are surveyed, as well as hydrolates characteristics and traditional uses. This review also describes the different biological properties attributed to hydrolates and, according with these properties, their potential uses.

Behavioral ecologists argue that evolution drives animal behavior to efficiently solve the problems animals face in their environmental niches. The ultimate evolutionary causes of decision making, they contend, can be found in economic analyses of organisms and their environments. Neurobiologists interested in how animals make decisions have, in contrast, focused their efforts on understanding the neurobiological hardware that serves as a more proximal cause of that same behavior. Describing the flow of information within the nervous system without regard to these larger goals has been their focus. Recent work in a number of laboratories has begun to suggest that these two approaches are beginning to fuse. It may soon be possible to view the nervous system as a representational process that solves the mathematically defined economic problems animals face by making efficient decisions. These developments in the neurobiological theory of choice, and the new schema they imply, form the subject of this article.  相似文献

The mechanisms underpinning the ecological impacts of the presence of artificial night lighting remain elusive. One suspected underlying cause is that the presence of light at night (LAN) supresses nocturnal production of melatonin, a key driver of biological rhythm and a potent antioxidant with a proposed role in immune function. Here, we briefly review the evidence for melatonin as the link between LAN and changes in behaviour and physiology. We then present preliminary data supporting the potential for melatonin to act as a recovery agent mitigating the negative effects of LAN in an invertebrate. Adult crickets (Teleogryllus commodus), exposed to constant illumination, were provided with dietary melatonin (concentrations: 0, 10 or 100 µg ml−1) in their drinking water. We then compared survival, lifetime fecundity and, over a 4-week period, immune function (haemocyte concentration, lysozyme-like and phenoloxidase (PO) activity). Melatonin supplementation was able only partially to mitigate the detrimental effects of LAN: it did not improve survival or fecundity or PO activity, but it had a largely dose-dependent positive effect on haemocyte concentration and lysozyme-like activity. We discuss the implications of these relationships, as well as the usefulness of invertebrates as model species for future studies that explore the effects of LAN.  相似文献

By interacting with polymorphic HLA class I molecules, the killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) influence the innate and adaptive immune response to infection. The KIR family varies in gene content and sequence polymorphism, thereby, distinguishing individuals and populations. To investigate KIR diversity in the earliest settlers of India, we have characterized the KIR gene content in three Dravidian-speaking populations (Mollukurumba, Kanikar, and Paravar) from the state of Tamil Nadu, southern India. The activating KIR genes and putative group-B KIR haplotypes were frequent in Paravar and Kanikar, a scenario analogous to those seen previously in other populations of Indian origin, indicating that predominance of group-B KIR haplotypes is the characteristic feature of Indian populations. In contrast, the KIR gene profile of Mollukurumba was more related to Caucasian type. It is not clear whether a local-specific selection or a recent admixture from Iran is responsible for such discrete profile in Mollukurumba. Each southern Indian population had distinct KIR genotype profile. Comparative analyses with world populations revealed that group-B KIR haplotypes were frequent in the natives of India, Australia, and America, the populations associated with those involved in extensive prehistoric human migrations. Whether or not natural selection has acted to enrich group-B KIR haplotypes in these migratory descendants is an issue that requires objective testing.
