The initiation of a coevolutionary relationship between signal and response can be explained by either the receiver taking advantage of information inadvertently provided by the sender or the sender taking advantage of a perceptual bias in the receiver. In addition, once both signal and response are present, the exchange of information may or may not be cooperative. We examined the evolution of a signal of aggressive intent (expression of vertical bars) across all the northern swordtail fishes (Xiphophorus) in a phylogenetic context. We found that the signal was present before responses evolved, which suggests that this coevolutionary relationship was initiated by the receiver taking advantage of information inadvertently provided by the signaler. In addition, we introduce a novel method for examining the cooperative nature of signaling systems and provide some evidence to suggest that in this signaling system, receivers may be exploiting an honest signal in some species.  相似文献

Both exotic and native species have been shown to evolve in response to invasions, yet the impacts of rapidly evolving interactions between novel species pairs have been largely ignored in studies of invasive species spread. Here, I use a mathematical model of an interacting invasive predator and its native prey to determine when and how evolutionary lability in one or both species might impact the dynamics of the invader's spatial advance. The model shows that evolutionarily labile invaders continually evolve better adapted phenotypes along the moving invasion front, offering an explanation for accelerating spread and spatial phenotype clines following invasion. I then analytically derive a formula to estimate the relative change in spread rate due to evolution. Using parameter estimates from the literature, this formula shows that moderate heritabilities and selection strengths are sufficient to account for changes in spread rates observed in historical and ongoing invasions. Evolutionarily labile native species can slow invader spread when genes flow from native populations with exposure to the invader into native populations ahead of the invasion front. This outcome is more likely in systems with highly diffuse native dispersal, net directional movement of natives toward the invasion front, or human inoculation of uninvaded native populations.  相似文献

Voice pitch is the primary perceptual correlate of fundamental frequency (fo) and describes how low or high a voice is perceived by listeners. Prior research showed that men whose habitual voice pitch is lower are perceived to have stronger fighting ability. However, voice pitch is also flexible and can thus be used facultatively to signal states that change situationally, such as current aggressive intent (i.e., readiness to use aggression). Drawing on motivation-structural-rules theory, this research tests the hypothesis that male speakers will be perceived as more likely to attack when they lower (compared to raise) their pitch to address an adversary in a conflict situation. Three experiments using male speakers and listeners supported this hypothesis, both with and without controlling for the perception of the speakers' fighting ability. In contrast, the same experiments found no evidence that pitch lowering enhanced the speakers' perceived fighting ability after controlling for their perceived aggressive intent. Moreover, we found mixed evidence that the speakers' perceived physical strength interacted with pitch modulation to influence their perceived aggressive intent. On balance, these findings show that, at least for men, pitch modulation is primarily an aggressive-intent signal assessed independently of signalers' fighting ability. Future research should distinguish between perceptions of aggressive-intent and fighting-ability when examining the perceptual effects of male voice-pitch modulation in intrasexual competition.  相似文献

In southwestern Australia fields, colonization of wheat roots by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is reduced due to repeated use of phosphate (P) fertilizers. We predicted AMF that aggressively colonize wheat roots at low P supply would also aggressively colonize at high P supply, but provide no additional P uptake benefit and reduce growth. Wheat (cv. Kulin) seedlings were non-mycorrhizal (NM) or inoculated separately with 10 isolates of AMF from wheat-belt soils in a glasshouse experiment. Kojonup loamy sand was supplied with P to provide suboptimal and supraoptimal P for growth of NM wheat in this soil. At low P supply, wheat growth was limited by P availability. All AMF isolates colonized wheat roots at 14 days after emergence of seedlings. At 42 days, percentage root length colonized (%RLC) was highest for two isolates of Scutellospora calospora, WUM 12(2) and WUM 12(3), followed by Glomus sp. WUM 51, G. invermaium WUM 10(1), Acaulospora laevis WUM 11(4) and Gigaspora decipiens WUM 6(1). These isolates, designated as `aggressive colonizers', ranged from 50 to 89%RLC. A second group of AMF ranged from 1 to 19%RLC at 42 days. This group, termed `non-aggressive colonizers', included Acaulospora spp. WUM 11(1), WUM 46, and WUM 49 and Glomus sp. WUM 44. High soil P supply increased seedling growth 2–3 fold, but reduced%RLC. Grouping of aggressive and non-aggressive AMF based on colonization rate at high P supply was similar to that at low P. At low P supply, only the two isolates of S. calospora increased wheat growth compared to the NM plant. The remaining aggressive and non-aggressive AMF reduced growth of wheat at low P, while aggressive colonizers reduced growth at high P. At low P supply, the aggressive colonizers increased shoot P concentration, while at high P, shoot P was not affected by AMF. Growth depression by aggressive colonizers was associated with reduced sucrose concentration in roots. Based on the negative growth response under low and high P fertility in the glasshouse, AMF could be expected to produce non-beneficial effects on wheat in the field depending on the P status of the soil and the aggressiveness of AMF in the community. Evolutionarily conserved function of a viral microRNA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are potent RNA regulators of gene expression. Some viruses encode miRNAs, most of unknown function. The majority of viral miRNAs are not conserved, and whether any have conserved functions remains unclear. Here, we report that two human polyomaviruses associated with serious disease in immunocompromised individuals, JC virus and BK virus, encode miRNAs with the same function as that of the monkey polyomavirus simian virus 40 miRNAs. These miRNAs are expressed late during infection to autoregulate early gene expression. We show that the miRNAs generated from both arms of the pre-miRNA hairpin are active at directing the cleavage of the early mRNAs. This finding suggests that despite multiple differences in the miRNA seed regions, the primary target (the early mRNAs) and function (the downregulation of early gene expression) are evolutionarily conserved among the primate polyomavirus-encoded miRNAs. Furthermore, we show that these miRNAs are expressed in individuals diagnosed with polyomavirus-associated disease, suggesting their potential as targets for therapeutic intervention.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation was to ascertain whether intermale aggression (by fighting) affects thyroid gland activity in wild rat. Following intermale aggression for three hours, thyro-follicular epithelial height was significantly decreased and colloidal content in follicular lumen increased only in the subordinate rats whereas the thyroid gland of the dominant rats was not perceptibly changed. Thus, aggression inhibits thyroid gland activity only in the subordinate rats. It is suggested that this effect may be due to psychosomatic rather than physical stress during aggression.  相似文献

A central tenet of evolutionary explanations for ageing is that the strength of selection wanes with age. However, data on age-specific expression and benefits of sexually selected traits are lacking—particularly for traits subject to sexual conflict. We addressed this by using as a model the responses of Drosophila melanogaster females of different ages to receipt of sex peptide (SP), a seminal fluid protein transferred with sperm during mating. SP can mediate sexual conflict, benefitting males while causing fitness costs in females. Virgin and mated females of all ages showed significantly reduced receptivity in response to SP. However, only young virgin females also showed increased egg laying; hence, there was a narrow demographic window of maximal responses to SP. Males gained significant ‘per mating’ fitness benefits only when mating with young females. The pattern completely reversed in matings with older females, where SP transfer was costly. The overall benefits of SP transfer (hence opportunity for selection) therefore reversed with female age. The data reveal a new example of demographic variation in the strength of selection, with convergence and conflicts of interest between males and ageing females occurring over different facets of responses to a sexually antagonistic trait.  相似文献

Zoos use ambassador animals in educational programs featuring close contact with humans. Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) at the Saint Louis Zoo are retrieved for programs by a keeper wearing brown handling gloves, but green cleaning gloves are worn during normal husbandry when physical contact with the animal is only incidental. The chinchillas’ primary keeper anecdotally reported more reactivity and movement from chinchillas when approached with handling gloves. Animals’ behavioral reactions to the presence of humans often include locomotion and vigilance, but these responses may be attenuated by predictability. To investigate these behaviors, handling trials involving brief contact attempts with both cleaning and handling gloves were filmed. Results indicated that chinchillas responded to disturbances by moving, jumping, and adopting more alert body postures. Surprisingly, movement was recorded in longer durations when the keeper attempted to touch the animals with cleaning gloves. This higher arousal may indicate that the animal was not expecting to be handled, yet an attempt to do so was being made. This reaction provides evidence that potentially aversive events should be reliably and consistently signaled.  相似文献

High-frequency oscillations in a pulse wave signal in the range of 1-50 Hz and their relation to heart rhythms have been investigated. Informative parameters to estimate the adaptation reactions have been determined using the Kohonen maps, the results of simulating the pulse wave signal (single rheocycles), and the experimental data. The coefficient of harmonic variation was used as an informative parameter. It was shown that the space of signs in the frequency range of 1-12.5 Hz, formed on the basis of the coefficient of harmonic variation, possesses a significant degree of structuring relative to the distribution of data for different types of adaptation reactions.  相似文献

Half the global soil carbon (C) is held in high‐latitude systems. Climate change will expose these to warming and a shift towards plant communities with more labile C input. Labile C can also increase the rate of loss of native soil organic matter (SOM); a phenomenon termed ‘priming’. We investigated how warming (+1.1 °C over ambient using open top chambers) and litter addition (90 g m?2 yr?1) treatments in the subarctic influenced the susceptibility of SOM mineralization to priming, and its microbial underpinnings. Labile C appeared to inhibit the mineralization of C from SOM by up to 60% within hours. In contrast, the mineralization of N from SOM was stimulated by up to 300%. These responses occurred rapidly and were unrelated to microbial successional dynamics, suggesting catabolic responses. Considered separately, the labile C inhibited C mineralization is compatible with previously reported findings termed ‘preferential substrate utilization’ or ‘negative apparent priming’, while the stimulated N mineralization responses echo recent reports of ‘real priming’ of SOM mineralization. However, C and N mineralization responses derived from the same SOM source must be interpreted together: This suggested that the microbial SOM‐use decreased in magnitude and shifted to components richer in N. This finding highlights that only considering SOM in terms of C may be simplistic, and will not capture all changes in SOM decomposition. The selective mining for N increased in climate change treatments with higher fungal dominance. In conclusion, labile C appeared to trigger catabolic responses of the resident microbial community that shifted the SOM mining to N‐rich components; an effect that increased with higher fungal dominance. Extrapolating from these findings, the predicted shrub expansion in the subarctic could result in an altered microbial use of SOM, selectively mining it for N‐rich components, and leading to a reduced total SOM‐use.  相似文献

Status signals are linked to fighting ability and enable competitors to gain access to resources without risking injury in aggressive combat. The relationship between testosterone (T), a hormone that mediates aggression, and signals of status is well studied in males, but little is known about the relationship between T and female signals of status. Female and male American goldfinches Spinus tristis express a dynamic carotenoid‐based orange bill color during the breeding season and previous work has demonstrated that females use orange bill color to communicate competitive ability during intrasexual competition. We test the hypothesis that female bill color reflects baseline T, which would allow receivers to directly assess a competitor's aggressive potential. We found a positive relationship between T and bill coloration in females, indicating that bill color has the ability to signal female competitive status. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that female bill color is a reliable signal of fighting ability, and indicates that females, like males, may use coloration to signal their hormonally mediated aggressive potential.  相似文献

The global decline in insect diversity threatens pollination services, potentially impacting crop production and food security. Here, we argue that this looming pollination crisis is generally approached from an ecological standpoint, and that consideration of evolutionary principles offers a novel perspective. First, we outline that wild plant species have overcome ‘pollination crises’ throughout evolutionary history, and show how associated principles can be applied to crop pollination. We then highlight technological advances that can be used to adapt crop flowers for optimal pollination by local wild pollinators, especially by increasing generalization in pollination systems. Thus, synergies among fundamental evolutionary research, genetic engineering, and agro-ecological science provide a promising template for addressing a potential pollination crisis, complementing much-needed strategies focused on pollinator conservation.  相似文献
