Aims

Biochars, being good sorbents of organic compounds, can reduce the mobility of pesticides in soil and subsequent pollution to groundwater, but may also impact on the efficacy of soil-applied herbicides. The aim of this study is to seek a potential solution to this problem.

Methods

We prepared a wood biochar at a relatively low heat treatment temperature (350 °C), and used it as an adsorptive carrier for incorporating the herbicides 2,4-D and acetochlor, and also as a soil amendment. Release experiment through a thin soil layer and leaching experiment through a soil column were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the biochar for controlling the release and leaching of herbicides in soil.

Results

The release experiments demonstrated that the low-temperature biochar could control the release of herbicides in soil, and the leaching experiments showed that this biochar significantly reduced the leached amount of herbicides by 1/2?~?3/4, depending on the depth (5?~?15 cm) of biochar-amended topsoil. High retention of herbicides in the biochar-amended topsoil was observed.

Conclusions

The results suggest that the low temperature biochar, if applied properly in soil, may be useful for extending the efficacy of herbicides while controlling their potential pollution.  相似文献

Aims

A pot study spanning four consecutive crop seasons was conducted to compare the effects of successive rice straw biochar/rice straw amendments on C sequestration and soil fertility in rice/wheat rotated paddy soil.

Methods

We adopted 4.5 t ha?1, 9.0 t ha?1 biochar and 3.75 t ha?1 straw for each crop season with an identical dose of NPK fertilizers.

Results

We found no major losses of biochar-C over the 2-year experimental period. Obvious reductions in CH4 emission were observed from rice seasons under the biochar application, despite the fact that the biochar brought more C into the soil than the straw. N2O emissions with biochar were similar to the controls without additives over the 2-year experimental period. Biochar application had positive effects on crop growth, along with positive effects on nutrient (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) uptake by crop plants and the availability of soil P, K, Ca and Mg. High levels of biochar application over the course of the crop rotation suppressed NH3 volatilization in the rice season, but stimulated it in the wheat season.

Conclusions

Converting straw to biochar followed by successive application to soil is viable for soil C sequestration, CH4 mitigation, improvements of soil and crop productivity. Biochar soil amendment influences NH3 volatilization differently in the flooded rice and upland wheat seasons, respectively.  相似文献

Aims

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of biochar on maize yield and greenhouse gases (GHGs) in a calcareous loamy soil poor in organic carbon from Henan, central great plain, China.

Methods

Biochar was applied at rates of 0, 20 and 40?t?ha?1 with or without N fertilization. With N fertilization, urea was applied at 300?kg?N ha?1, of which 60% was applied as basal fertilizer and 40% as supplementary fertilizer during crop growth. Soil emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O were monitored using closed chambers at 7?days intervals throughout the whole maize growing season (WMGS).

Results

Biochar amendments significantly increased maize production but decreased GHGs. Maize yield was increased by 15.8% and 7.3% without N fertilization, and by 8.8% and 12.1% with N fertilization under biochar amendment at 20?t?ha?1 and 40?t?ha?1, respectively. Total N2O emission was decreased by 10.7% and by 41.8% under biochar amendment at 20?t?ha?1 and 40?t?ha?1 compared to no biochar amendment with N fertilization. The high rate of biochar (40?t?ha?1) increased the total CO2 emission by 12% without N fertilization. Overall, biochar amendments of 20?t?ha?1 and 40?t?ha?1 decreased the total global warming potential (GWP) of CH4 and N2O by 9.8% and by 41.5% without N fertilization, and by 23.8% and 47.6% with N fertilization, respectively. Biochar amendments also decreased soil bulk density and increased soil total N contents but had no effect on soil mineral N.

Conclusions

These results suggest that application of biochar to calcareous and infertile dry croplands poor in soil organic carbon will enhance crop productivity and reduce GHGs emissions.  相似文献

Key message

Here we present the development of cowpea lines tolerant to a herbicide from imidazoline class (imazapyr). Plants presented tolerance to fourfold the commercial recommended dose for weed control.

Abstract

Cowpea is one of the most important and widely cultivated legumes in many parts of the world. Its cultivation is drastically affected by weeds, causing damages during growth and development of plants, competing for light, nutrients and water. Consequently, weed control is critical, especially using no-tillage farming systems. In tropical regions, no-till farming is much easier with the use of herbicides to control weeds. This study was conducted to evaluate the possibility of obtaining transgenic cowpea plants resistant to imidazolinone, which would facilitate weed control during the summer season. The biolistic process was used to insert a mutated acetohydroxyacid synthase coding gene (Atahas) which confers tolerance to imazapyr. The transgene integration was confirmed by Southern blot analysis. Out of ten lines tested for tolerance to 100 g ha?1 imazapyr, eight presented some tolerance. One line (named 59) revealed high herbicide tolerance and developmental growth comparable to non-transgenic plants. This line was further tested for tolerance to higher herbicide concentrations and presented tolerance to 400 g ha?1 imazapyr (fourfold the commercial recommended dose) with no visible symptoms. Line 59 will be the foundation for generating imidazolinone-tolerant cowpea varieties, which will facilitate cultivation of this crop in large areas.  相似文献

Background and aims

Biochar additions to tropical soils have been shown to reduce N leaching and increase N use efficiency. No studies exist verifying reduced N leaching in field experiments on temperate agricultural soils or identifying the mechanism for N retention.

Methods

Biochar derived from maize stover was applied to a maize cropping system in central New York State at rates of 0, 1, 3, 12, and 30 t?ha-1 in 2007. Secondary N fertilizer was added at 100, 90, 70, and 50 % of the recommended rate (108 kg N ha-1). Nitrogen fertilizer enriched with 15?N was applied in 2009 to the 0 and 12 t?ha-1 of biochar at 100 and 50 % secondary N application.

Results

Maize yield and plant N uptake did not change with biochar additions (p?>?0.05; n?=?3). Less N (by 82 %; p?<?0.05) was lost after biochar application through leaching only at 100 %?N fertilization. The reason for an observed 140 % greater retention of applied 15?N in the topsoil may have been the incorporation of added 15?N into microbial biomass which increased approximately three-fold which warrants further research. The low leaching of applied fertilizer 15?N (0.42 % of applied N; p?<?0.05) and comparatively high recovery of applied 15?N in the soil (39 %) after biochar additions after one cropping season may also indicate greater overall N retention through lower gaseous or erosion N losses with biochar.

Conclusions

Addition of biochar to fertile soil in a temperate climate did not improve crop growth or N use efficiency, but increased retention of fertilizer N in the topsoil.  相似文献

Aims

Two field microcosm experiments and 15N labeling techniques were used to investigate the effects of biochar addition on rice N nutrition and GHG emissions in an Inceptisol and an Ultisol.

Methods

Biochar N bioavailability and effect of biochar on fertilizer nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) were studied by 15N-enriched wheat biochar (7.8803 atom% 15N) and fertilizer urea (5.0026 atom% 15N) (Experiment I). Corn biochar and corn stalks were applied at 12 Mg?ha?1 to study their effects on GHG emissions (Experiment II).

Results

Biochar had no significant impact on rice production and less than 2 % of the biochar N was available to plants in the first season. Biochar addition increased soil C and N contents and decreased urea NUE. Seasonal cumulative CH4 emissions with biochar were similar to the controls, but significantly lower than the local practice of straw amendment. N2O emissions with biochar were similar to the control in the acidic Ultisol, but significantly higher in the slightly alkaline Inceptisol. Carbon-balance calculations found no major losses of biochar-C.

Conclusion

Low bio-availability of biochar N did not make a significantly impact on rice production or N nutrition during the first year. Replacement of straw amendments with biochar could decrease CH4 emissions and increase SOC stocks.  相似文献

Abstract

This study evaluated remediation of the herbicide sulfentrazone in soils with three different mineralogies (kaolinite, hematite, and gibbsite) and three remediation sulfentrazone treatments (Canavalia ensiformis L., Crotalaria juncea L., and natural attenuation). This study was conducted in a factorial scheme, in triplicate with randomized block design. Sulfentrazone was applied at 0 and 400?g ha?1. We analyzed sulfentrazone residue in the soils by high-performance liquid chromatography and confirmed the results with bioassays of Pennisetum glaucum. Herbicide movement was greater in the kaolinitic soil without plant species. The retention of herbicide in the kaolinitic soil occurred in larger quantities in the 0–12?cm layer, with higher levels found in the treatments with plants. In the hematitic soil with C. juncea, all applied herbicides were concentrated in the 0–12?cm layer. In the other hematitic soil treatments, sulfentrazone was not detected by chemical analysis at any soil depth, although in many treatments, it was detected in the bioassay. Phytoremediation was more efficient with C. ensiformis grown in gibbsitic soil, reducing the sulfentrazone load by approximately 27%. Natural attenuation was more efficient than phytoremediation in oxidic soils due to soil pH and texture soils favored microbial degradation of the compound.
  • Highlights
  • The influence of soil mineralogy of herbicide sulfentrazone retention was evaluated.

  • Canavalia ensiformis and Crotalaria juncea were evaluated as phytoremediation plants.

  • Kaolinite soils presented great movement of sulfentrazone in the soil.

  • Natural attenuation is more efficient in oxide soils than phytoremediation.

Does biochar influence soil physical properties and soil water availability?   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10

Aims

This study aims to (i) determine the effects of incorporating 47 Mg ha?1 acacia green waste biochar on soil physical properties and water relations, and (ii) to explore the different mechanisms by which biochar influences soil porosity.

Methods

The pore size distribution of the biochar was determined by scanning electron microscope and mercury porosimetry. Soil physical properties and water relations were determined by in situ tension infiltrometers, desorption and evaporative flux on intact cores, pressure chamber analysis at ?1,500 kPa, and wet aggregate sieving.

Results

Thirty months after incorporation, biochar application had no significant effect on soil moisture content, drainable porosity between –1.0 and ?10 kPa, field capacity, plant available water capacity, the van Genuchten soil water retention parameters, aggregate stability, nor the permanent wilting point. However, the biochar-amended soil had significantly higher near-saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil water content at ?0.1 kPa, and significantly lower bulk density than the unamended control. Differences were attributed to the formation of large macropores (>1,200 μm) resulting from greater earthworm burrowing in the biochar-amended soil.

Conclusion

We found no evidence to suggest application of biochar influenced soil porosity by either direct pore contribution, creation of accommodation pores, or improved aggregate stability.  相似文献

Background and aims

Biochar is produced from the pyrolysis of organic materials, and when buried in soil can act as a long term soil carbon (C) store. Evidence suggests that biochar can also increase crop yields, reduce nutrient leaching and increase biological nitrogen fixation in leguminous plants. However, the potential for increasing biological N2 fixation in agroecosystems is poorly understood, with inconsistent reports of root nodulation following biochar application. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of biochar application rate and time since application on nodulation and nitrogenase activity in nodules of clover grown in a temperate agricultural soil.

Methods

We used replicated field plots with three biochar application rates (0, 25 and 50 t ha?1). Three years after biochar amendment, the plots were further split and fresh biochar added at two different rates (25 and 50 t ha?1) resulting in double-loaded reapplications of 25?+?25 and 50?+?50 t ha?1.

Results

Three years after biochar application, there was no significant difference in the total number of root nodules between biochar-amended and unamended soil, regardless of the application rate. However, despite clover root nodules being of a similar number and size the level of nitrogenase activity of individual nodules in biochar-amended soil was significantly higher than in unamended soil. Reapplication of biochar resulted in decreased nodulation, although the rate of nitrogenase activity per nodule remained unaffected.

Conclusion

In the short term, biochar influences root nodule number and localised N2 fixation per nodule; however, total nitrogenase activity for the whole root system remained unaffected by the application rate of biochar or time since its application. These results emphasise the importance of long-term field studies, with a variety of applications rates for determining the influence of biochar applications on N2-fixing organisms and in providing data that can meaningfully inform agronomic management decisions and climate change mitigation strategies.  相似文献

Background and aims

Fruit orchards potential as carbon (C) sinks is virtually unknown. Moreover, despite their importance in the Mediterranean area, few data are available about the effect of the reduction in water availability on fruit tree productivity. Here we report the effect of two different irrigation regimes on net primary (NPP) and net ecosystem (NEP) productivities of an apple orchard in northern Italy in 2006.

Methods

Trees productivity and heterotrophic soil respiration were estimated by inventory and root exclusion methods, while belowground allocation with a C mass-balance approach.

Results

The NPP of the control (7.86?±?0.25?Mg?C ha-1; mean ± SE) was significantly greater than that of water stressed trees (6.53?±?0.12?Mg?C ha-1), and the ratio between above and below net primary productivity (ANPP/BNPP) was 1.88 and 0.98 respectively. However, the partitioning of ANPP and BNPP among aerial organs and among fine, coarse roots, and root litter was unaffected by the water regime. Although NEP was greater in the control than in stressed trees the C gain of the system after fruit removal (NEPafr) was unaffected by water availability.

Conclusions

This study indicated an effect of water availability on C partitioning patterns above- and belowground, although there were no significant effects on the C sink potential as NEPafr.  相似文献

Aims

Ammonia (NH3) can be volatilised from the soil surface following the surface application of nitrogenous fertilisers or ruminant urine deposition. The volatilisation of NH3 is of agronomic and environmental concern, since NH3-N is a form of reactive nitrogen. Ammonia adsorption onto biochar has the potential to mitigate NH3 losses, but to date no studies have examined the potential for reducing NH3 losses when biochar is present in the soil matrix.

Methods

We used 15N-enriched urine to examine the effect of incorporating a wood based low-temperature biochar into soil on NH3 volatilisation. Then, we extracted the urine-treated biochar and compared its potential to act as a plant N source with fresh biochar, while growing ryegrass (Lolium perenne).

Results

The NH3 volatilisation from 15N-labelled ruminant urine, applied to soil, was reduced by 45% after incorporating either 15 or 30?t ha?1 of biochar. When the urine-treated biochar particles were transferred into fresh soil, subsequent plant growth was not affected but the uptake of 15N in plant tissues increased, indicating that the adsorbed-N was plant available.

Conclusions

Our results show that incorporating biochar into the soil can significantly decrease NH3 volatilisation from ruminant urine and that the NH3-N adsorbed onto the biochar is bioavailable. Further studies are now required to assess the temporal dynamics of the N pools involved.  相似文献

Background and aims

The sustainability of forest ecosystems may be at stake especially in forests on base-poor soils due to reduced nutrient deposition and intensified silvicultural practices. Understanding nutrient availability and cycling is therefore essential to manage forest soil fertility. This study aims to assess in a beech plot Mg and Ca vertical transfer in soil and root uptake using an isotopic tracing experiment.

Methods

A simulated rainfall containing a small amount (960 g?Mg.ha?1; 530 g Ca.ha?1) of highly enriched 26Mg and 44Ca was sprayed on the forest floor of a 35-yr-old beech plot. The isotopic composition of fine roots and of the soil exchangeable Mg and Ca pool was monitored during 1 year. A pool and flux model (IsoMod) was developed to predict the labeling of the soil and vertical transfer of tracers.

Results

Tracers (44Ca and 26Mg) were immediately retained in the thin litter layer. During the following year, Mg and to a lesser extent Ca were progressively released. After 1 year, the exchangeable Mg and Ca pools of the upper mineral layer (0–5 cm) were strongly labeled (~660?‰, representing ~55 % of the tracer input and ~370?‰, ~41 % of the tracer input respectively). A significant proportion (~8 % 26Mg, ~2 % 44Ca) of tracer was leached through the soil, below 10 cm. This amount was much larger than what was predicted using a simple mixing model. The Ca and Mg isotopic composition of fine roots at all depths was close or lower than that of exchangeable Ca and Mg respectively.

Conclusions

An in situ ecosystem-scale 26Mg and 44Ca isotopic tracing experiment was successfully carried out. Tracers were at first strongly retained in the litter layer, then progressively transferred to soil horizons below. Nutrient cycling of Mg and Ca were proven to be very different. Mg had a higher mobility in the soil than Ca, and nutrient uptake sources were proven to be different.  相似文献

Aims

In Brazil N fertilization of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is low compared to most other countries. 15N-aided studies and the occurrence of many N2-fixing bacteria associated with cane plants suggest significant contributions from biological N2 fixation (BNF). The objective of this study was to evaluate BNF contributions to nine cane varieties under field conditions using N balance and 15N natural abundance techniques.

Methods

The field experiment was planted near Rio de Janeiro in 1989, replanted in 1999 and harvested 13 times until 2004. Soil total N was evaluated at planting and again in 2004. Samples of cane leaves and weeds for the evaluation of 15N natural abundance were taken in 2000, 2003 and 2004.

Results

N accumulation of the commercial cane varieties and a variety of Saccharum spontaneum were persistently high and N balances (60 to 107?kg?N ha?1?yr?1) significantly (p?<?0.05) positive. The δ15N of leaf samples were lower than any of the weed reference plants and data obtained from a greenhouse study indicated that this was not due to the cane plants tapping into soil of lower 15N abundance at greater depth.

Conclusion

The results indicate that the Brazilian varieties of sugarcane were able to obtain at least 40?kg?N ha?1?yr?1 from BNF.  相似文献

Aims

Carbon (C) bio-sequestration within the phytoliths of plants, a mechanism of long-term biogeochemical C sequestration, may play a major role in the global C cycle and climate change. In this study, we explored the potential of C bio-sequestration within phytoliths produced in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa), a well known silicon accumulator.

Methods

The rice phytolith extraction was undertaken with microwave digestion procedures and the determination of occluded C in phytoliths was based on dissolution methods of phytolith-Si.

Results

Chemical analysis indicates that the phytolith-occluded C (PhytOC) contents of the different organs (leaf, stem, sheath and grains) on a dry weight basis in 5 rice cultivars range from 0.4 mg?g?1 to 2.8 mg?g?1, and the C content of phytoliths from grains is much lower than that of leaf, stem and sheath. The data also show that the PhytOC content of rice depends on both the content of phytoliths and the efficiency of C occlusion within phytoliths during rice growth. The biogeochemical C sequestration flux of phytoliths in 5 rice cultivars is approximately 0.03–0.13 Mg of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents (Mg-e-CO2) ha?1?year?1. From 1950 to 2010, about 2.37?×?108?Mg of CO2 equivalents might have been sequestrated within the rice phytoliths in China. Assuming a maximum phytoliths C bio-sequestration flux of 0.13 Mg-e-CO2 ha?1?year?1, the global annual potential rate of CO2 sequestrated in rice phytoliths would approximately be 1.94?×?107?Mg.

Conclusions

Therefore rice crops may play a significant role in long-term C sequestration through the formation of PhytOC.  相似文献

Background and aims

Dominance of C4 grasses has been proposed as a means of increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in restored tallgrass prairies. However, this hypothesis has not been tested on long time scales and under realistic (e.g. N-limited) environmental conditions. We sampled a restoration in southern Illinois 33 years after establishment to determine the effects of varying plant communities on SOC sequestration in the top 50 cm of soil.

Methods

SOC, total nitrogen (TN), and the stable isotopic composition of SOC (δ13C) were used to calculate SOC sequestration rates, N storage, and the relative contributions of C3 vs. C4 plant communities as a function of soil depth.

Results

While both a forb-dominated and a mixed forb-grass plant community showed positive sequestration rates (0.56?±?0.13 and 0.27?±?0.10 Mg C ha?1 yr?1, respectively), a C4 grass-dominated community showed SOC losses after 33 years of restoration (?0.31?±?0.08 Mg C ha?1 yr?1). Soil δ13C values were significantly more negative for forb-dominated plant communities, increasing the confidence that plant communities were stable over time and an important contributor to differences in SOC stocks among transects.

Conclusion

These results suggest that functional diversity may be necessary to sustain sequestration rates on the scale of decades, and that dominance of C4 grasses, favored by frequent burning, may lead to SOC losses over time.  相似文献

Aims

Integrated weed management, which allows reducing the reliance of cropping systems on herbicides, is based on the use of specific combinations of innovative agricultural practices. However the impact of the introduction of these practices in cropping systems may influence soil functioning such as biogeochemical cycling. Here, we investigated N2O emissions and the abundances of N-cycling microorganisms in 11-year old cropping systems (i.e. conventional reference and integrated weed management) in order to estimate the environmental side-effects of long-term integrated weed management.

Methods

N2O emissions were continuously measured using automated chambers coupled with infrared analysers. Abundances of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers together with total bacteria and archaea were determined monthly from 0 to 10 and 10–30 cm soil layer samples by quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). The relationship between N2O emissions and microbial abundances during the study were investigated as were their relationships with soil physicochemical parameters and climatic conditions.

Results

Over 7 months, the system with integrated weed management emitted significantly more N2O with cumulated measured emissions of 240 and 544 g N-N2O ha?1 for conventional and integrated systems, respectively. Abundances of microbial guilds varied slightly between systems, although ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were more abundant in the reference system (1.7 106 gene copies g?1 dry weight soil) compared to the integrated system (1.0 106 gene copies g?1 dry weight soil). These differences revealed both the long-term modification of soil biogeochemical background and the functioning of microbial processes due to 11 years of alternative field management, and the short-term impacts of the agricultural practices introduced as part of weed management during the cropping year.

Conclusions

The abundances of the different microbial communities involved in N cycling and the intensity of N2O emissions were not related, punctual high N2O emissions being more dependent on favourable soil conditions for nitrifying and denitrifying activities. Future studies will be performed to check these findings for other pedoclimatic conditions and to examine the impact of such cropping systems.  相似文献

Aims

A 3-year field experiment (October 2004–October 2007) was conducted to quantify N2O fluxes and determine the regulating factors from rain-fed, N fertilized wheat-maize rotation in the Sichuan Basin, China.

Methods

Static chamber-GC techniques were used to measure soil N2O fluxes in three treatments (three replicates per treatment): CK (no fertilizer); N150 (300 kg N fertilizer ha?1 yr?1 or 150 kg N?ha?1 per crop); N250 (500 kg N fertilizer ha?1 yr?1 kg or 250 kg N?ha?1 per crop). Nitrate (NO 3 ? ) leaching losses were measured at nearby sites using free-drained lysimeters.

Results

The annual N2O fluxes from the N fertilized treatments were in the range of 1.9 to 6.7 kg N?ha?1 yr?1 corresponding to an N2O emission factor ranging from 0.12 % to 1.06 % (mean value: 0.61 %). The relationship between monthly soil N2O fluxes and NO 3 - leaching losses can be described by a significant exponential decaying function.

Conclusions

The N2O emission factor obtained in our study was somewhat lower than the current IPCC default emission factor (1 %). Nitrate leaching, through removal of topsoil NO 3 ? , is an underrated regulating factor of soil N2O fluxes from cropland, especially in the regions where high NO 3 - leaching losses occur.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Land abandonment might be an alternative management for restoring soil conditions and C from prolonged cultivation and agricultural practices. In the present study, the influence of 18–22?years of land abandonment on soil properties, C dynamics and microbial biomass was evaluated in closely situated wheat and alfalfa farmlands, and abandoned lands on calcareous soils, Central Iran.

Methods

Soil properties of the 0–15 and 15–30?cm depths from abandoned lands were compared to those from conventionally cultivated lands (i.e., continuous wheat–fallow and alfalfa–wheat rotation) common in calcareous soils of Central Zagros Mountains.

Results

Soil bulk density in the 0–15 and 15–30?cm layers decreased significantly while total porosity increased significantly in abandoned lands. Generally, soil aggregate stability tended to increase within the abandoned fields owing to increased water-stable macro-aggregates. Soil organic C (OC) contents (g kg?1) and pools (Mg ha?1) in the 0–15?cm soil layer increased significantly in abandoned lands compared with cultivated lands, with no effect in the 15–30?cm soil layer after 18–22?years of land abandonment, suggesting the restoration of C is pronounced in the upper 0–15?cm soil depth . The total C accumulation in abandoned lands was 7.0?Mg?C?ha?1 for the entire sampling depth (0–30?cm) over the 18–22?years of land abandonment, which was 26% greater relative to cultivated lands. Carbon mineralization (Cmin) followed a trend similar to organic C, whereas C turnover (Cmin/OC ratio) was slightly greater in wheat fields. However, soil microbial biomass C (MBC) did not vary considerably among the three land uses.

Conclusions

In brief, improvements, albeit slowly, in soil properties of the top layer with the cessation of cultivation indicated that land abandonment may result in enhanced soil C sequestration, and would maintain fertility and productivity of the farmlands of semi-arid climates.  相似文献

Background and aims

Take-all, caused by the fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, is the most damaging root disease of wheat. A severe attack often leads to premature ripening and death of the plant resulting in a reduction in grain yield and effects on grain quality (Gutteridge et al. in Pest Manag Sci 59:215–224, 2003). Premature death of the plant could also lead to inefficient use of applied nitrogen (Macdonald et al. in J Agric Sci 129(2):125–154, 1997). The aim of this study was to determine crop N uptake and the amount of residual mineral N in the soil after harvest where different severities of take-all had occurred.

Methods

Plant and soil samples were taken at anthesis and final harvest from areas showing good and poor growth (later confirmed to be caused by take-all disease) in three winter wheat crops grown on the same soil type on Rothamsted Farm in SE England in 1995, 2007 and 2008 (harvest sampling only). All crops received fertiliser N in spring at recomended rates (190–200?kg?N ha?1). On each ocassion crops were assessed for severity of take-all infection (TAR) and crop N uptakes and soil nitrate plus ammonium (SMN) was determined. Grain yields were also measured.

Results

Grain yields (at 85% dry matter) of crops with moderate infection (good crops) ranged from 4.3 to 13.0?t ha?1, compared with only 0.9–4.5?t ha?1 for those with severe infection (poor crops). There were significant (P?<?0.05) negative relationships between crop N uptake and TAR at anthesis and final harvest. At harvest, good crops contained 129–245?kg?N ha?1 in grain, straw and stubble, of which 85–200?kg?N ha?1 was in the grain. In contrast, poor crops contained only 46–121?kg?N ha?1, of which only 22–87?kg?N ha?1 was in the grain. Positive relationships between SMN and TAR were found at anthesis and final harvest. The SMN in the 0–50?cm layer following harvest of poor crops was significantly (P?<?0.05) greater than that under good crops, and most (73–93%) was present as nitrate.

Conclusions

Localised patches of severe take-all infection decreased the efficiency with which hexaploid wheat plants recovered soil and fertiliser derived N, and increased the subsequent risk of nitrate leaching. The risk of gaseous N losses to the atmosphere from these areas may also have been enhanced.  相似文献

Biochar’s role as an alternative N-fertilizer: ammonia capture   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17

Background

Biochar’s role as a carbon sequestration agent, while simultaneously providing soil fertility improvements when used as an amendment, has been receiving significant attention across all sectors of society, ranging from academia, industry, government, as well as the general public. This has lead to some exaggeration and possible confusion regarding biochar’s actual effectiveness as a soil amendment. One sparsely explored area where biochar appears to have real potential for significant impact is the soil nitrogen cycle.

Scope

Taghizadeh-Toosi et al. (this issue) examined ammonia sorption on biochar as a means of providing a nitrogen-enriched soil amendment. The longevity of the trapped ammonia was particularly remarkable; it was sequestered in a stable form for at least 12?days under laboratory air flow. Furthermore, the authors observed increased 15N uptake by plants grown in soil amended with the 15N-enriched biochar, indicating that the 15N was not irreversibly bound, but, was plant-available.

Conclusions
