Background
Blue Land Crab (Cardisoma guanhumi) is one of the most important crustacean species captured and commercialized in Brazil. Although this species is not considered to be threatened with extinction, populations of C. guanhumi are known to be rapidly diminishing due to heavy harvesting pressures and degradation of their natural habitats, highlighting the necessity of developing and implanting management and protection strategies for their populations. There have been no ethnozoological publications that have focused specifically on C. guanhumi, in spite of importance of this type of information for developing efficient management plans of resource utilization. So, the present work describes the ethnoecological aspects of the capture and commercialization of C. guanhumi by a fishing community in northeastern Brazil. Methods
Field work was carried out in the municipality of Mucuri, Bahia in Brazil, between the months of January and March/2011 through the use of open semi-structured interviews with all of the crustacean harvesters in city who acknowledged their work in capturing this species, totaling 12 interviewees. The informants were identified through the use of the "snowball" sampling technique. In addition to the interviews themselves, the "guided tour" technique and direct observations was employed. Results
According all the interviewees, the C. guanhumi is popularly called "guaiamum" and is collected in "apicum" zones. They recognize sexual dimorphism in the species based on three morphological characteristics and the harvesters also pointed two stages in the reproductive cycle during the year and another phase mentioned by the interviewees was ecdysis. All of the interviewed affirmed that the size and the quantities C. guanhumi stocks in Mucuri have been diminishing. All of the interviewees agreed that the species and other mangrove resources constituted their principal source of income. The harvesters dedicated three to five days a week to collect Blue Land Crabs and the principal technique utilized for capturing is a trap called a "ratoeira" (rat-trap).Conclusions
The results of the present work demonstrated that the community retains a vast and important volume of knowledge about C. guanhumi that could subsidize both scientific studies and the elaboration of viable management and conservation strategies for this species. 相似文献2.
Background
Zona pellucida binding assays (ZBAs) have proven useful in determining the fertilising ability of spermatozoa in several species. Most ZBAs use fresh or salt-stored oocytes collected from fresh ovaries but because ovaries are not easy to obtain on a regular basis, chilled and frozen-thawed ovaries have been tested, with varying results. The present study tested the hypothesis that cat spermatozoa, either fresh or frozen-thawed, can bind to homologous zona pellucida of oocytes retrieved from frozen-thawed queen ovaries to a similar extent as they can bind to the zona pellucida of fresh, in vitro matured oocytes. Methods
Ovaries were collected from queens after routine ovario-hysterectomy and either stored in NaCl at -20°C until use (treatment animals), or used fresh (controls). Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were retrieved by ovarian slicing from either source and used directly (immature oocytes from frozen-thawed ovaries; treatment animals) or after in vitro maturation (IVM) (fresh ovaries; controls) for 24 hours in TCM 199, supplemented with 1 IU hCG/mL and 0.5 IU eCG/mL and 0.5% bovine serum albumin (BSA). The oocytes were incubated for 4 hours in 5% CO2 in air at 38°C and 100% humidity in the presence of 5 × 106 fresh or frozen-thawed spermatozoa/mL. Representative samples of oocytes were processed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Results
Both fresh and frozen-thawed spermatozoa bound to the in vitro matured zona pellucida but significantly fewer, or no, spermatozoa bound to frozen-thawed, immature zona pellucida (P < 0.001). Also, more fresh spermatozoa than frozen-thawed spermatozoa bound to the zona pellucida (P < 0.001). The zona pellucida surface differed in morphology (SEM), with in vitro matured oocytes showing a dense surface with few fenestrations in contrast to their frozen-thawed, immature counterparts, where fenestrations were conspicuously larger. Conclusion
In conclusion, under the conditions of the present study, immature oocytes recovered from ovaries frozen immersed in NaCl at -20°C are less suitable for use in feline ZBA. 相似文献3.

The selected material of Cerasus subgen. will be useful for conservation and management and important for Prunus breeding programs.Abstract
Knowledge of relationships among the cultivated and wild species of Cerasus is important for recognizing gene pools in germplasm and developing effective conservation and management strategies. In this study, genetic and phylogenetic relationships of wild Cerasus subgenus species naturally growing in Iran, including P. avium (mazzard), P. mahaleb, P. brachypetala, P. incana, P. yazdiana, P. microcarpa subsp. microcarpa, P. microcarpa subsp. diffusa and P. pseudoprostrata and three commercial species, sweet cherry (P. avium), sour cherry (P. cerasus) and duke cherry (P. x gondouinii) was investigated based on 16 nuclear SSR and five chloroplast SSR. Very high level of polymorphism was detected among the studied species based these molecular markers, indicating high inter and intraspecific genetic variation. Inter and intraspecific genetic similarity coefficients varied from 0.00 to 1.00, indicating high genetic variation in studied germplasm. These two molecular markers types could distinguish differences between all species so that accessions of each species were placed into a single group. Based on molecular markers, a close correlation was observed between intraspecific variation and geographical distribution. Furthermore, based on nuSSR primers, most wild species showed 2–4 alleles and may be tetraploid. In conclusion, the conservation of these highly diverse native populations of Iranian wild Cerasus germplasm is recommended for future breeding activity. 相似文献4.

Background
Activities and diet during the postpartum period are culturally dictated in many Southeast Asian cultures, and a period of confinement is observed. Plants play an important role in recovery during the postpartum period in diet and traditional medicine. Little is known of the Kry, a small ethnic group whose language was recently described, concerning its traditions and use of plants during pregnancy, parturition, postpartum recovery and infant healthcare. This research aims to study those traditions and identify medicinal plant use. Methods
Data were collected in the 3 different Kry villages in Khammouane province, Lao PDR, through group and individual interviews with women by female interviewers. Results
A total of 49 different plant species are used in women's healthcare. Plant use is culturally different from the neighboring Brou and Saek ethnic groups. Menstruation, delivery and postpartum recovery take place in separate, purpose-built, huts and a complex system of spatial restrictions is observed. Conclusions
Traditions surrounding childbirth are diverse and have been strictly observed, but are undergoing a shift towards those from neighboring ethnic groups, the Brou and Saek. Medicinal plant use to facilitate childbirth, alleviate menstruation problems, assist recovery after miscarriage, mitigate postpartum haemorrhage, aid postpartum recovery, and for use in infant care, is more common than previously reported (49 species instead of 14). The wealth of novel insights into plant use and preparation will help to understand culturally important practices such as traditional delivery, spatial taboos, confinement and dietary restrictions, and their potential in modern healthcare. 相似文献5.
Background and aim
Exotic plant species can alter the nitrogen cycle in invaded ecosystems. We assess the differences in nitrogen use strategies and litter production and dynamics among three native riparian trees (Fraxinus angustifolia, Populus alba and Ulmus minor) and three co-occurring exotics (Ailanthus altissima, Robinia pseudoacacia and Ulmus pumila), currently spreading throughout river banks in inner Spain. We aim to predict the ecological consequences of a replacement of the natives by the exotics. Methods
We compared the leaf lifespan, nitrogen resorption efficiency in leaves, nitrogen mean residence time, amount and timing of litter production and amount of nitrogen returned to soils between these native and exotic species. Results
We found differences among species in all the variables measured, but not between native or exotic origins. Species were ranked from the most to the least conservative nitrogen use strategy as follows: U. pumila was the most conservative species, followed by the three natives (with an intermediate strategy), A. altissima and finally by the nitrogen-fixer R. pseudoacacia. The studied exotic species would produce contrasting impacts on the nitrogen cycle upon invasion. Conclusions
On the basis of our results, we predict little impacts on the nitrogen cycle if U. pumila dominates the landscape. Despite being nitrogen-fixer R. pseudocacia would not increase soil nitrogen availability in the study area due to its low litter production and litter decomposition rates. In contrast, we predict an increase in nitrogen availability of soils upon A. altissima invasion, as this species produces a high amount of nitrogen rich and labile litter. This study offers a striking example of the contingencies involved in predicting the ecosystem impacts of exotic plant invasion. 相似文献6.

Background and aims
The relationship between tree species and soil nutrient availability is critical for evaluating plantation succession and promoting forest restoration. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of exotic and native tress species on soil nutrient availability. Methods
Four exotic species (Eucalyptus urophylla, E. tereticornis, Acaia auriculaeformis, A. mangium) and four native species (Castanopsis fissa, Schima superba, C. hystrix, Michelia macclurei) were planted and grown for one-year. Soil solution (DOC, DON, NH4?N, NO3?N) was sampled and analyzed during the study. After the experiment, soil properties were determined, and plant tissues were analyzed. Results
DOC levels were greater in soils with trees planted than controls without trees. Compared to native species, exotic species had much faster growth rates and greatly reduced DON and NO3?N concentrations. Exotic species always had less P concentrations in leaves and stems than native species. Furthermore, N-fixing A. auriculaeformis led to greater soil available P compared to other species. Conclusions
Based on these findings, we provide some recommendations for afforestation practice. This study highlights that a better understanding of the pros and cons of exotic species would be beneficial to advance afforestation in China and the world. 相似文献7.

An unusual polyad occurs in three Parkia species, named cavitate polyad. It has an internal central space full of lipoprotein substances, contacting all pollen grains, probably aiding pollen germination.Abstract
This study details the unusual morphology of polyads of three species of Parkia (P. multijuga Benth., P. ulei (Harms) Kuhlm., and P. pendula (Willd.) Benth. ex Walp.) and suggests functions for polyad adaptive traits that are linked to the reproductive success of the species. Polyads within the anthers of the three Parkia species were analysed by surface (scanning electron microscopy) and anatomical (light microscopy) studies. Ultrastructure and development studies were carried out for P. pendula polyads. Polyads are globose and cavitated, i.e., exhibit an internal cavity that varies in size, being more conspicuous in P. ulei and P. pendula. Other differences among species are related to the polyad size, exine ornamentation and the type of substances stored in the pollen grain. The polyad internal cavity is filled with an exudate that may be related to the pollen germination through the internal pores and/or translocation of substances from the anther loculus to the inside or vice versa. This inference is supported by the following observations: the spaces between the pollen grains in a polyad are also filled with the exudate, and the exudate inside the polyad is similar to the anther locular fluid. The morphology and substances stored within the pollen grains of Parkia polyads seem to be more related to polyad functionality and physiology than to the selective pressures exerted by different pollinators on the group. 相似文献8.

Background
Different animal models are used as fracture models in orthopaedic research prior to implant use in humans, although biomechanical forces can differ to a great extend between species due to variable anatomic conditions, particularly with regard to the gait. The rabbit is an often used fracture model, but biomechanical data are very rare. The objective of the present study was to measure axial forces, bending moments, and bending axis directly in the rabbit tibia in vivo. The following hypothesis was tested: Axial forces and bending moments in the mid-diaphysis of rabbit tibia differ from other experimental animals or indirectly calculated data. Methods
A minifixateur system with 4 force sensors was developed and attached to rabbit tibia (n = 4), which were subsequently ostectomised. Axial forces, bending moments and bending angles were calculated telemetrically during weight bearing in motion between 6 and 42 days post operation. Results
Highest single values were 201% body weight [% bw] for axial forces and 409% bw cm for bending moments. Whereas there was a continous decrease in axial forces over time after day 10 (P = 0.03 on day 15), a decrease in bending moments was inconsistent (P = 0.03 on day 27). High values for bending moments were frequently, but not consistently, associated with high values for axial forces. Conclusion
Axial forces in rabbit tibia exceeded axial forces in sheep, and differed from indirectly calculated data. The rabbit is an appropriate fracture model because axial loads and bending moments in rabbit tibia were more closely to human conditions than in sheep tibia as an animal model. 相似文献9.

Background
A comparative food ethnobotanical study was carried out in fifteen local communities distributed in five districts in the Palestinian Authority, PA (northern West Bank), six of which were located in Nablus, two in Jenin, two in Salfit, three in Qalqilia, and two in Tulkarm. These are among the areas in the PA whose rural inhabitants primarily subsisted on agriculture and therefore still preserve the traditional knowledge on wild edible plants. Methods
Data on the use of wild edible plants were collected for one-year period, through informed consent semi-structured interviews with 190 local informants. A semi-quantitative approach was used to document use diversity, and relative importance of each species. Results and discussion
The study recorded 100 wild edible plant species, seventy six of which were mentioned by three informants and above and were distributed across 70 genera and 26 families. The most significant species include Majorana syriaca, Foeniculum vulgare, Malvasylvestris, Salvia fruticosa, Cyclamen persicum, Micromeria fruticosa, Arum palaestinum, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Gundelia tournefortii, and Matricaria aurea. All the ten species with the highest mean cultural importance values (mCI), were cited in all five areas. Moreover, most were important in every region. A common cultural background may explain these similarities. One taxon (Majoranasyriaca) in particular was found to be among the most quoted species in almost all areas surveyed. CI values, as a measure of traditional botanical knowledge, for edible species in relatively remote and isolated areas (Qalqilia, and Salfit) were generally higher than for the same species in other areas. This can be attributed to the fact that local knowledge of wild edible plants and plant gathering are more spread in remote or isolated areas. Conclusion
Gathering, processing and consuming wild edible plants are still practiced in all the studied Palestinian areas. About 26 % (26/100) of the recorded wild botanicals including the most quoted and with highest mCI values, are currently gathered and utilized in all the areas, demonstrating that there are ethnobotanical contact points among the various Palestinian regions. The habit of using wild edible plants is still alive in the PA, but is disappearing. Therefore, the recording, preserving, and infusing of this knowledge to future generations is pressing and fundamental. 相似文献10.

Background
Combination of CHD (chromo-helicase-DNA binding protein)-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with electrophoresis (PCR/electrophoresis) is the most common avian molecular sexing technique but it is lab-intensive and gel-required. Gender determination often fails when the difference in length between the PCR products of CHD-Z and CHD-W genes is too short to be resolved. Results
Here, we are the first to introduce a PCR-melting curve analysis (PCR/MCA) to identify the gender of birds by genomic DNA, which is gel-free, quick, and inexpensive. Spilornis cheela hoya (S. c. hoya) and Pycnonotus sinensis (P. sinensis) were used to illustrate this novel molecular sexing technique. The difference in the length of CHD genes in S. c. hoya and P. sinensis is 13-, and 52-bp, respectively. Using Griffiths' P2/P8 primers, molecular sexing failed both in PCR/electrophoresis of S. c. hoya and in PCR/MCA of S. c. hoya and P. sinensis. In contrast, we redesigned sex-specific primers to yield 185- and 112-bp PCR products for the CHD-Z and CHD-W genes of S. c. hoya, respectively, using PCR/MCA. Using this specific primer set, at least 13 samples of S. c. hoya were examined simultaneously and the Tm peaks of CHD-Z and CHD-W PCR products were distinguished. Conclusion
In this study, we introduced a high-throughput avian molecular sexing technique and successfully applied it to two species. This new method holds a great potential for use in high throughput sexing of other avian species, as well. 相似文献11.

Background and aims
Mixing effects during litter decomposition could occur between two or more different litter species because of the potential nutrient transfer. However, evidence of mixing effects is variable and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Using a three-year decomposition experiment, we aim to examine for the effects of litter mixing and position on decomposition rates and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics. Methods
We studied litter decomposition of Stipa krylovii (Sk) and Astragalus galactites (Ag), two dominant species with contrasting litter quality, in a typical steppe of northern China in both single decomposition and three mixing treatments. The three mixing treatments included thorough mixing (Sk-Ag), Ag over Sk (Ag/Sk), and Sk over Ag (Sk/Ag).Results
Both the Sk-Ag and the Sk/Ag mixture had negative mixing effects on the mass loss of the litter mixture, while the Ag/Sk mixture had a neutral mixing effect. The percent mass loss was higher when the litter species was placed at the top (25.0 and 51.9 % of mass remaining for Ag and Sk, respectively) than at the bottom (38.3 and 61.8 % of mass remaining for Ag and Sk, respectively). The Sk/Ag mixture had negative effects on the release of N while all three mixing treatments had positive effects on the release of P.Conclusions
Our results indicate that: (1) mixing treatments can induce different mixing effects; (2) environmental factors likely play an important role in controlling the mixing effect; and (3) litter-mixtures have different non-additive effects on N and P, which may further increase the heterogeneity of N and P availability as the two litter species may fall differentially in terms of space and time. 相似文献12.

Background and aims
Phosphorus (P) is a commonly limiting nutrient for plant growth in natural environments. Many legumes capable of N2-fixation require more P than non-legumes do. Some legume crops can use sparingly soluble forms of P such as iron phosphate much better than other species, but reports on the ability of woody legumes to access iron phosphate are rare. Methods
Plants of four Acacia species (Acacia stipuligera F. Muell., A. ancistrocarpa Maiden & Blakely, A. stellaticeps Kodela, Tindale & D. Keith and A. robeorum Maslin), native to the Great Sandy Desert in north-western Australia, were grown in a glasshouse in river sand with different levels of iron phosphate, between 0 and 16?μg P g?1 sand. Plant growth, tissue P concentrations, and pH and carboxylates in the rhizosphere were measured. Results
Growth of A. stipuligera and A. ancistrocarpa was not responsive to increased P supply; in contrast, A. stellaticeps and A. robeorum produced significantly more root and shoot dry mass at 8 and 16?μg P g?1 sand than at 0?μg P g?1 sand; differences in root mass ratio were significant between species but not between P treatments. A. robeorum was the only species colonised by mycorrhizal fungi, and the colonisation percentage decreased with increasing P supply. In all species, P-uptake rates and tissue P concentrations were significantly higher at greater P supply. Rhizosphere pH and the amount of carboxylates in the rhizosphere decreased with increasing P supply. Conclusions
Net P uptake increased with increasing P supply, showing that the present Acacia species can access P from iron phosphate. However, due to their inherently slow growth rate, enhanced P supply did not increase growth of two of the four studied species. The ability of the Acacia species to access P from iron phosphate is presumably related with carboxylate exudation and rhizosphere acidification. 相似文献13.

Background
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is responsible for numerous bloodstream infections associated with severe adverse outcomes in case of inappropriate initial antimicrobial therapy. The present study was aimed to develop a novel quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay, using ecfX as the specific target gene, for the rapid and accurate identification of P. aeruginosa from positive blood cultures (BCs).Methods
Over the period August 2008 to June 2009, 100 BC bottles positive for gram-negative bacilli were tested in order to evaluate performances of the qPCR technique with conventional methods as gold standard (i.e. culture and phenotypic identification). Results
Thirty-three strains of P. aeruginosa, 53 strains of Enterobactericaeae, nine strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and two other gram-negative species were isolated while 3 BCs were polymicrobial including one mixture containing P. aeruginosa. All P. aeruginosa clinical isolates were detected by qPCR except a single strain in mixed culture. Performances of the qPCR technique were: specificity, 100%; positive predictive value, 100%; negative predictive value, 98.5%; and sensitivity, 97%.Conclusions
This reliable technique may offer a rapid (<1.5 h) tool that would help clinicians to initiate an appropriate treatment earlier. Further investigations are needed to assess the clinical benefit of this novel strategy as compared to phenotypic methods. 相似文献14.
Background and aims
Plant physiological traits and their relation to soil N availability was investigated as regulators of the distribution of understory shrub species along a slope in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation in central Japan. Methods
At the study site, previous studies demonstrated that both net and gross soil nitrification rates are high on the lower slope and there are dramatic declines in different sections of the slope gradient. We examined the distributions of understory plant species and their nitrate (NO 3 ? -N) use traits, and compared the results with the soil traits. Results
Our results show that boundaries between different dominant understory species correspond to boundaries between different soil types. Leucosceptrum stellipilum occurs on soil with high net and gross nitrification rates. Hydrangea hirta is dominant on soil with high net and low gross nitrification rates. Pieris japonica occurs on soil with very low net and gross nitrification rates. Dominant understory species have species-specific physiological traits in their use of NO 3 ? -N. Pieris japonica lacks the capacity to use NO 3 ? -N as a N source, but other species do use NO 3 ? -N. Lindera triloba, whose distribution is unrelated to soil NO 3 ? -N availability, changes the extent to which it uses NO 3 ? -N in response to soil NO 3 ? -N availability. Conclusions
Our results indicate that differences in the physiological capabilities and adaptabilities of plant species in using NO 3 ? -N as a N source regulate their distribution ranges. The identity of the major form of available soil N is therefore an environmental factor that influences plant distributions. 相似文献15.
Aims
Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient, and plant available Fe is often limited in alkaline soils. Fe deficiency chlorosis decreases plant growth and yield. Identification of germplasm with high and low Fe use efficiency will allow studies to better understand the genetic components for breeding Fe efficient varieties. Methods
A screen using cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings identified varieties that maintained contrasting levels of chlorophyll under Fe deficiency or limitation. A time course of mineral dynamics in cotyledons was conducted. Results
The variety Ashley had the highest chlorophyll under Fe deficiency and per unit Fe in the leaf, while the variety Miniature White had the lowest. Ashley also maintained higher chlorophyll when challenged with low Fe or bicarbonate, accumulated greater quantities of Fe, and had higher root ferric reductase activity. Cotyledons accumulated minerals for the first several days, then Fe, P, K, and Cu were remobilized. The Fe use efficient and inefficient varieties remobilized Fe and P on different timescales. Conclusions
Our results suggest that this screen can identify varieties for systems level studies that could elucidate factors needed for Fe use efficiency and remobilization of minerals. The time course indicated that cotyledon Fe stores did not contribute to seedling Fe use efficiency. 相似文献16.

Background
Wild edible plants (WEP) provide staple and supplement foods, as well as cash income to local communities, thus favouring food security. However, WEP are largely ignored in land use planning and implementation, economic development, and biodiversity conservation. Moreover, WEP-related traditional knowledge is rapidly eroding. Therefore, we designed this study to fulfill a part of the knowledge gap by providing data on diversity, traditional knowledge, economic potential, and conservation value of WEP from Nepal. Methods
The information was collected through focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Percentage of general utility of the plants among the study communities was evaluated using the Chi-square (χ 2) test of homogeneity. High priority species were identified after consultation with the local stakeholders followed by scoring based on defined criteria. Pairwise ranking was used to assess ethnoecological knowledge to identify the threats to WEP.Results
We documented 81 species belonging to Angiosperms (74), Pteridophytes (5), and Fungi (2). Most of the species were used as fruits (44 species) followed by vegetables (36). Almost half of the species (47%) were also used for purposes other than food. From the species with market value (37% of the total), 10 were identified as high priority species. Pairwise ranking revealed that WEP are threatened mostly by habitat destruction, land-use change and over-harvesting. Some of these plants are crop wild relatives and could thus be used for crop improvement. Interestingly, our study also revealed that young people who spend most of the time in the forest as herdsmen are particularly knowledgeable of wild fruit plants. Conclusion
We provide empirical evidence from a relatively large area of Nepal about diversity and status of WEP, as well as methodological insights about the proper knowledge holders to consult. Regarding the unique and important knowledge they have on WEP, young people should be included when recruiting participants to ethnobotanical studies or to any type of consultation about WEP. The habit of using wild edible plants is still alive and is a traditional culinary practice that demonstrates rich traditional knowledge of local people. WEP were found to be important for livelihood as well as showing great potential for crop improvement. Priority species should be promoted for income generation activities through sustainable collection and trade. Communities should engage in minimizing the threats to these valuable resources. 相似文献17.

Background and aims
Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) input has changed the relative importance of nutrient elements. This study aimed to examine the effects of different nutrient conditions on the interaction between exotic and native plants. Methods
We conducted a greenhouse experiment with a native species Quercus acutissima Carr. and an exotic species Rhus typhina L. grown in monocultures or mixtures, under three N:P ratios (5, 15 and 45 corresponding to N-limited, basic N and P supply and P-limited conditions, respectively). After 12 weeks of treatment, traits related to biomass allocation, leaf physiology and nutrient absorption were determined. Results
R. typhina was dominant under competition, with a high capacity for carbon assimilation and nutrient absorption, and the dominance was unaffected by increasing N:P ratios. R. typhina invested more photosynthate in leaves and more nutrients in the photosynthetic apparatus, enabling high biomass production. Q. acutissima invested more photosynthate in roots and more nutrients in leaf persistence at the expense of reduced carbon assimilation capacity. Conclusions
Different trade-offs in biomass and nutrient allocation of the two species is an important reason for their distinct performances under competition and helps R. typhina to maintain dominance under different nutrient conditions. 相似文献18.

Background
Dermatophytes represent a group of keratinophilic fungi capable of invading the superficial layer of the skin, hair, and nails of humans and animals. There is a high prevalence of dermatomycosis in tropical regions, and military personnel are susceptible to this kind of infection due to the type of occupational activities. Objective
This study was to investigate dermatophytosis in military, in addition to predisposing factors to such infections. Methods
The direct examination of the 221 samples obtained was conducted by preparing fresh slides, clarified with KOH. The clinical materials were seeded in duplicate in SDA and in Mycosel agar medium. The identification of the etiologic agents was performed according to the Riddell technique. Results
99/221 (44.8 %) of the dermatophyte infection agents distributed in the three taxonomic genera that cause Tinea were recovered. The Trichophyton genus was the most representative and T. rubrum species 33 (33.3 %), the most prevalent. The other species found were as follows: T. tonsurans 13 (13.1 %), T. verrucosum 11 (11.1 %), T. interdigitale 9 (9.1 %), and T. mentagrophytes 6 (6.1 %). Among the most affected anatomical sites were skin 83 (83.8 %) and nails 17 (17.2 %).Conclusions
Dermatophyte infections are common disorders in tropical countries. These infections lead to a variety of clinical manifestations. This study reports the incidence of dermatophytosis in the military personnel in the Central-West Region of Brazil. The occupational activities of the military individuals, in addition to the hot and humid climate of the region, can predispose them to infection by these fungal entities. 相似文献19.

Background
Malaria remains a major public health problem in Ethiopia. Pyrethroid-treated mosquito nets are one of the major tools available for the prevention and control of malaria transmission. PermaNet® is a long-lasting insecticide-treated net (LLIN) recommended by WHO for malaria control. Objective
The objective of the study was to assess utilization and retention of PermaNet® nets distributed for malaria control in Buie and Fentalie districts and monitor the bio-efficacy of the nets using the WHO cone bioassay test procedures. Methods
A cross sectional study was carried out by interviewing household heads or their representative in Buie and Fentalie districts. The two districts were selected based on a priori knowledge of variations on ethnic background and housing construction. Clusters of houses were chosen within each of the study villages for selection of households. 20 households that had received one or more PermaNet® nets were chosen randomly from the clusters in each village.
