The Upper Cretaceous (Middle Cenomanian-Coniacian) successions of the Bey Da?lar? Carbonate Platform (Western Taurides, SW Turkey) are represented by rudist-bearing shallow-water limestones. Four rudist lithosomes are distinguished for the first time from the Eastern, Northern and Southern Areas of the Bey Da?lar? Autochthon. The oldest rudist assemblages dominated by caprinids are observed in the Eastern (Katran Da?) Area (caprinid lithosomes) and suggest a Middle-Late Cenomanian age. The uppermost part of the platform carbonates in the Northern Area is characterized by an association of hippuritid and radiolitid rudist bivalves dominated by Vaccinites praegiganteus (Toucas) (hippuritid lithosomes). The rudist fauna indicates the Late Turonian age, which is confirmed by the previously obtained 87Sr/86Sr values of well-preserved low-Mg calcite of Vaccinites praegiganteus (Toucas) shells. The rudist associations of the Southern (Susuzda?) Area are represented by two rudist formations. The lower lithosomes are mainly made up of hippuritids and radiolitids (hippuritid-radiolitid lithosomes). The stratigraphical distributions of the species of the assemblage indicate a Santonian-Early Campanian age. The rudist associations of the upper lithosomes are dominated by species of Joufia and Gorjanovicia (Joufia-Gorjanovicia lithosomes), which suggest a Late Campanian-Maastrichtian age. Identification of the rudist lithosomes yields information on the palaeobiogeographic distribution of the rudist species in the eastern Mediterranean region and also on the biostratigraphic frame of the Upper Cretaceous successions of the Bey Da?lar? Worldwide Late Cambrian—Silurian lithofacies patterns indicate that the platforms of that time were sites of accumulation of two essentially different rocks suites: the platform carbonate rocks and the platform terrigenous rocks. Most of the platform rocks accumulated as sediments in shallow marine environments similar to those of the present but far more widely spread.Present-day marine benthic faunas are distributed in depth zones which are primarily controlled by temperature. Faunas tend to occur in substrate-related discrete clusters (communities) within each life zone; similar substrates in different depth zones commonly have different faunal associations. Individual phyletic stocks may encounter environmental optimum or near-optimum conditions in certain areas, that commonly are revealed by an abundance of species and individuals within species in each stock. Environmental optimum conditions depend upon availability of food that may be utilized, modes of feeding of the animals present, water motion, and substrate, among other factors. Organisms in past seas were distributed in patterns similar to those of the present.Carbonate platforms were particularly widespread during the latest Cambrian—Early Ordovician. Intertidal environments spread widely across those platforms during that time and characteristic faunal associations developed in them. Saukiid and related tribolites dominated latest Cambrian carbonate platform intertidal faunas. The Early Ordovician carbonate platform intertidal was dominated by archeogastropod-nautiloid cephalopod faunas. These animals were joined by tabulate corals and certain brachiopods during the latter part of the Ordovician and Silurian as prominent faunal elements in the carbonate platform intertidal—shallow subtidal. Cruziana and related trace fossils, bivalves, and certain tribolites (notably homalonotids and dalmanitids) dominated most terrigenous platform intertidal—shallow subtidal faunas of the Ordovician and Silurian.Articulate brachiopods (primarily orthoids, strophomenoids, and rhynchonelloids) appear to have been relatively prominent during the Early Ordovician in shallow subtidal environments on both carbonate and terrigenous platforms and to have spread down the bathymetric gradient into increasingly deeper subtidal areas of both platforms during the latter part of the Ordovician. Tribolites dominated faunas in relatively moderate to deep subtidal environments on both platforms during the early part of the Ordovician. They were gradually replaced by brachiopods in first the shallower, and later the deeper subtidal as dominant members of the faunas. Brachiopods (primarily pentameroids and spiriferoids) dominated nearly all Silurian warm-water subtidal environments from the shallow subtidal to the edges of the platforms.Platform uplifts in the Middle Ordovician and glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations in the Late Ordovician caused environmental changes across the platforms that were accompanied by marked replacements among marine benthic faunas in all environments. The distribution of Ordovician carbonate platforms and glacial deposits suggests that an Ordovician polar region may have been close to present-day equatorial Africa and that Ordovician warm temperate-tropical regions lay close to the present-day North Pole.  相似文献

During the Late Barremian and Early Aptian (about 120 million years ago) intense volcanic degassing and extremely rapid release of methane hydrates contained in marine sediments added high amounts of carbon to the ocean and atmosphere, and resulted most probably in rising atmospheric carbon dioxide pressure. In order to document the response of the shallow water carbonate-producing communities to this pronounced disturbance of the carbon cycle we studied a Late Barremian to Early Aptian neritic carbonate succession deposited on the northern Tethyan shelf (Swiss Alps). The sedimentological and stable carbon and oxygen isotope records of two sections located along a N–S transect from proximal to more distal shelf environments were investigated. The sediments correspond to outer-, mid-, and inner-ramp deposits of a homoclinal carbonate ramp. Vertical facies variations within the two studied sections feature three progradation phases of the platform. A highly resolved correlation of the shelf sediments with a pelagic succession from the Southern Alps (Northern Italy) is based on both δ13C stratigraphy and biostratigraphy, and indicates that the drowning of the Helvetic carbonate platform coincided with a pronounced calcification crisis of calcareous nannofossils. The biocalcification crisis started before but culminated during the Aptian methane event recorded in a negative carbon-isotope spike. We propose that increased carbon dioxide concentrations in oceans and atmosphere related to volcanic activity and to sudden methane release reduced the marine calcium carbonate oversaturation and the calcification potential of benthic and planktonic organisms. Carbonate-producing shallow water communities on platforms and ramps suffering from additional environmental stress such as extreme temperatures or high nutrient levels could not survive during times of rising sea level, and, as a consequence, carbonate platforms drowned.  相似文献

Coastal mixed carbonate-siliciclastic and carbonate deposits of Late Barremian to Early Aptian age from the Lusitanian Basin (Portugal) are compared with a deep-sea succession (ODP 641) off the coast of Portugal. The coastal deposits show an abrupt cessation of rudist-dominated carbonate deposition marked by an emersion horizon and followed by the deposition of orbitolinid-rich marls during the Early Aptian. The subsequent development of the carbonate platform during the Late Aptian is masked by a hiatus. For this time interval shallow-water debris deposits of the deep-sea succession ODP 641 indicate that carbonate production in shallow-water areas resume in the early Late Aptian. Carbon-isotope stratigraphy in combination with available biostratigraphic data is used for intrabasinal correlation and for the correlation of the Portuguese with shallow-water successions from Switzerland, France, Oman and the Pacific. The correlation reveals that during the Early Aptian similar changes in their sedimentary patterns occur at the beginning of a marked negative shift of carbon-isotope values associated with the global deposition of organic rich black shales in the deep sea (OAE 1a). In all compared sections rudist-dominated carbonate deposition is stopped and followed either by orbitolinid-rich deposits, the deposition of microbial carbonates or by the drowning of the carbonate platform. The comparison shows that the deterioration for carbonate platform growth conditions during the Early Aptian occurred essentially simultaneously at the various localities. During this episode the ocean waters were in a preconditioned state of acidification stressing biocalcifying organisms. Sea level change combined with local effects like elevated nutrient levels and higher temperatures, were probably determining the nature of sedimentary change in shallow-water environments during the carbonate crisis. In the sections studied in Portugal the high abundance of orbitolinids overlying rudist limestones indicates that increased nutrient input may have played an important local role among the factors that caused an overall deterioration for carbonate producers during the late Early Aptian.  相似文献

Four Late Cretaceous phytoclimatic zones — subtropical, warm-temperature, temparature and boreal — are recognized in the Northern Hemisphere. Warm-temperature vegetation terminates at North Sakhalin and Vancouver Island. Floras of various phytoclimatic zones display parallel evolution in response to climatic changes, i.e., a temperature rise up to the Campanian interrupted by minor Coniacian cooling, and subsequent deterioration of climate culminating in the Late Danian. Cooling episodes were accompanied by expansions of dicotyledons with platanoid leaves, whereas the entire-margined leaf proportion increased during climatic optima. The floristic succession was also influenced by tectonic events, such as orogenic and volcanic activity which commenced in Late Cenomanian-Turonian times. Major replacements of ecological dominants occurred at the Maastrichtian/Danian and Early/Late Danian boundaries.  相似文献

Hennhöfer, D., Götz, S. & Mitchell, S.F. 2012: Palaeobiology of a Biradiolites mooretownensis rudist lithosome: seasonality, reproductive cyclicity and population dynamics. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 450–461. During the Cretaceous, rudist bivalves were among the most important benthic carbonate producers on tropical to sub‐tropical carbonate platforms. Yet questions concerning the biology of rudist bouquets remain unanswered to a great extent. In this study a monospecific bouquet of the small radiolitid rudist Biradiolites mooretownensis has been evaluated from a palaeobiological angle. Three‐dimensional, high‐resolution, quantitative analysis provides a detailed evaluation of growth and reproduction in an in situ rudist association. A total of 1237 consecutive tomograms with a vertical spacing of 0.1 mm were produced of which 1150 have been digitally measured for total area, number of specimens, packing density, spat density, recruitment, survival time, mortality and accommodation space. The results show constant coverage of about 60%, a stable packing density of 3.2 specimens per cm2 and constant reproduction throughout the bouquet. Time series analysis (spectral analysis) using PAST statistical software shows cyclic spat density every 14.9 mm of vertical growth. Combined with the results of the δ18O isotope analysis (showing cyclicities of 14 mm) one reproduction cycle appears to be annual. 46.4% of all counted specimens died before 3 mm of vertical growth. More than 93% of the initial spat does not exceed 15 mm shell height or 1 year respectively. Two mortality peaks in the juvenile’s life at 4 and 10–15 mm shell height either represent important obstacles in the ontogenetic development of the species or reflect external influences. □ Biradiolites, grinding tomography, palaeobiology, population dynamics, reproduction, rudists, sclerochronology, seasonality.  相似文献

Rudistid lithosomes cropping out near Castrojimeno, at the northern margin of the Central System in north-central Spain, provide detailed information on their composition and structure, on their development and succession, and about their relationship with the Coniacian sequence stratigraphy framework of the Iberian Basin. Most rudist assemblages are oligospecific, with a dominant species, or monospecific. The radiolitids Biradiolites angulosus, Praeradiolites requieni, and Radiolites sauvagesi and the hippuritids Hippurites incisus and Vaccinites giganteus were identified. Radiolitids demonstrate wide intraspecific morphological variability. The following Riding’s structural categories of organic reefs are represented: segment reefs, spaced and close cluster reefs, and close cluster/frame reefs. Bioclastic beds of reworked rudist fragments occur below or in between the rudist reefs. The vertical succession of all five types of rudistid lithosomes distinguished evidences a shallowing-upward trend. Rudistid lithosomes developed on the coastal margin during the superposition of the highstand sea-level stage of third- and fourth-order depositional sequences.  相似文献

Examples of bioerosional processes (boring patterns) are described from shallow-water limestones of the Late Jurassic Plassen Carbonate Platform (PCP) and the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene Gosau Group of the Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria. Some micro-/macro-borings can be related to distinct ichnotaxa, others are classified in open nomenclature. In the Alpine Late Jurassic, bioerosional structures recorded from clasts in mass-flows allow palaeogeographical conclusions concerning the source areas. In particular, these are borings of the Trypanites-ichnofacies detected from clasts (Barmstein limestones) of the PCP or special type of bored ooids of unknown source areas or restricted autochthonous occurrences. In the Lower Gosau Subgroup, Gastrochaenolites macroborings occur in mobile carbonate clast substrates of shore zone deposits (“Untersberg Marmor”). Different types of borings are recorded from rudist shells and coral skeleton, some of which are referable to the ichnotaxon Entobia produced by endolithic sponges. In the present study, special attention is paid to the occurrences of the cryptobiotic foraminifera Troglotella incrustans Wernli and Fookes in the Late Jurassic and Tauchella endolithica Cherchi and Schroeder in the Late Cretaceous. The latter is so far only known to be from the Early Cenomanian of France and is reported here for the first time from the Late Turonian-Early Coniacian stratigraphic interval where it was found in turbulent carbonate deposits within borings penetrating bivalve shells or coralline algae. The records of cryptobiotic foraminifera from the Northern Calcareous Alps are supplemented by a single finding from the Middle Cenomanian of SE France. A palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the occurrences of the cryptobiotic foraminifera is provided.  相似文献

Cretaceous shallow-marine carbonate rocks of SW Slovenia were deposited in the northern part of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform. A 560-m-thick continuous Upper Cenomanian to Santonian carbonate succession has been studied near Hru?ica Village in Matarsko Podolje. With regard to lithological, sedimentological, and stratigraphical characteristics, the succession has been divided into nine lithostratigraphic units, mainly reflecting regressive and transgressive intervals of larger scale. During the latest Cenomanian and Early Turonian, hemipelagic limestones were deposited on top of shallow-marine lagoon and peritidal Upper Cenomanian deposits indicating relative sea-level rise. Subsequently, the deeper marine depositional setting was gradually filled by clinoform bioclastic sand bodies overlain by peritidal and shallow-marine low-energy mainly lagoonal lithofacies. Similar lithofacies of predominately inner ramp/shelf depositional settings prevail over the upper part (i.e., Coniacian to Santonian) of the succession. In the area, the Upper Cetaceous carbonate rocks are separated from the overlying Lower Eocene (Upper Paleocene?) carbonate sequence by regional unconformity denoted by distinct paleokarstic features. On the Adriatic Carbonate Platform the deeper marine carbonate setting, developed at the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary, is usually correlated with OAE2 and related eustatic sea-level rise. Similarly, subsequent reestablished shallow-marine conditions are related to Late Turonian long- and short-term sea-level fall. However, we are suggesting that deeper marine deposits were deposited in a tectonically induced intraplatform basin formed simultaneously with the uplift of the northern and northeastern marginal parts of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform.  相似文献

Heterochronic processes are obvious in the most common family of Mesozoic asteroids, the Goniasteridae, whether studied from entire fossils or, as is more frequently the case, from isolated ossicles. When phylogeny is poorly known, comparison between species leads to such unsatisfactory interpretations as 'A is more paedomorphic than B' or 'C, compared with other species, has many peramorphic characters'. When the phylogeny is known, heterochronic trends appear amongst the lineages. The peramorphocline Metopaster parkinsoni - M. loirensis-M. trichilae-M. chilipora-M. hypertelicus is studied here from the Cenomanian to the Upper Campanian of France. Different morphological characters evolved at different speeds. Among each polymorphous population, some morphotypes foreshadowed the next step. Juveniles of one species look like the adults of one of the ascendants. The cline developed irrespective of the substrate, and proceeded together with a migration from the Anglo-Paris Basin to the Aquitanian Basin. Metopaster hunteri , during the Coniacian, and Metopaster meudonensis , during the Upper Campanian, both evolved from Metopaster parkinsoni by neoteny, and provide a good example of reiterated and canalized morphological evolution. In the “Eastern Pontides” (NE Turkey), the intense volcanic activity accompanying carbonate-siliceous sedimentation during the Late Cretaceous period ensured the occurrence of thick volcano-sedimentary sequences. Seventy-one radiolarian species belonging to 26 genera were identified from five stratigraphic sections of the Upper Cretaceous sequences between Trabzon and Giresun areas in NE Turkey. These species were obtained from the lower Turonian–lower Coniacian strata of the Çe?meler Formation, the Coniacian–lower Santonian strata of the Elmal? Dere Formation and the upper Santonian strata of the Ça?layan Formation. Coniacian–Campanian fauna, consisting of planktonic foraminifera Hedbergella, Marginotruncana, Globotruncana, Whiteinella and biserial heterohelicids as well as radiolarians, was recovered from the red pelagic limestones of the Elmal? With the breakup of Gondwanaland a northwards-transgressing sea reached southern Mozambique in mid-Cretaceous times. The deeply weathered Karoo volcanics of southern Mozambique are overlain by glauconitic silty sandstones of Barremian to Cenomanian age, with marginal disconformities in the lowest and uppermost Albian. After a late Cenomanian to Turonian hiatus, with local deposition of continental sediments, the marine facies reappeared with silty sandstones. In the south these sandstones are of Coniacian age, becoming younger to the north, where only the Campanian or Maestrichtian are represented. A minor unconformity is present within the Upper Maestrichtian—Lower Paleocene sequence. Shallow-water sediments indicate a further regression in late Eocene times. Oligocene sediments appear only in the deeper parts of the basin. A last transgression occurred in the Early Miocene. Single local ingressions might have followeduntil the Pliocene. Since the Pliocene, a general epeirogenic uplift of the South African subcontinent, combined with the tectonic activity of the East African Rift, led to a period of erosion. The Quaternary is characterized by a thick cover of eolian sands.The geological history, stratigraphy and paleogeography on both sides of the Mozambique Channel, and recent results of deep-sea drilling in the channel, suggest a more or less unchanged position of Madagascar relative to Africa since the Late Paleozoic.  相似文献

This paper investigates a time interval within the Late Ludfordian (Late Silurian), involving changes in faunal composition (the Lau Event), a major positive carbon isotope excursion (CIE), and contemporaneous sea-level changes in remote palaeo-basins. Based on the Silurian strata of Gotland (Sweden), we integrate sequence stratigraphy, carbon isotope stratigraphy, and platform-scale palaeoecological changes associated with this turbulent time period in Earth history. Three depositional sequences (sequences Nos. 1–3), including two separate periods of forced regression (falling stage systems tracts, FSSTs) are identified from outcrop and drillcore studies. The sequence stratigraphical framework is interpreted to reflect glacio-eustatic sea-level changes. The CIE starts at the onset of the initial FSST (sequence No. 1), just below the last appearance datum of the conodont Polygnathoides siluricus. The values increase through the ensuing lowstand and transgressive systems tracts (LST and TST) of sequence No. 2 and peak in the following highstand systems tract (HST). A second forced regression (FSST of sequence No. 2) took place in the lower Ozarkodina snajdri Zone. δ13C data are scarce from these siliciclastic strata, but inferably remain high. The δ13C values increase within the LST and earliest TST of sequence No. 3, before a decreasing trend starts within the early TST. δ13C values return to pre-excursion levels within the ensuing HST. The CIE is closely associated with an increase in stromatolites (mats and oncoids) across a wide range of depths and sedimentary environments, and correlations to other basins indicate a global increase in cyanobacterial activity. A drastic decline in level-bottom benthic faunas during the FSST of sequence No. 2 is, however, interpreted as a local response to the progradation of a delta complex (the Burgsvik Sandstone). Biological carbonate production replenishes rapidly within the TST of sequence No. 3, succeeding a thin LST dominated by reworked siliciclastics and chemically precipitated carbonates (ooids). The detailed relationship between the CIE and sea-level change presented herein is not fully consistent with previous reports on the CIEs associated with the lower Silurian Ireviken and Mulde events, respectively. Based on our facies analysis and sequence stratigraphical interpretation, two main mechanisms are suggested as responsible for the Late Ludfordian CIE: (1) a change in the riverine C-weathering flux towards the 13C end member following glacio-eustatically induced subaerial exposure of carbonate platforms throughout the tropics, and, (2) increased photosynthetic activity by benthic cyanobacteria exaggerating the δ13C values of precipitated carbonates.  相似文献

Sixteen species of the Stromboidea (Gastropoda) from the Late Cretaceous are described in this study. One species belongs to the Strombidae, the others to eight genera and subgenera of the Aporrhaidae. Eight species are new. They have been found in the Cenomanian of Kassenberg in western Germany, the Coniacian of the Mungo River in Cameroon, the Santonian of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, the Santonian/Campanian of the Ariyalur area in southern India, the Campanian of northern Spain, and the Maastrichtian of the Western Desert in Egypt. Two species ofDrepanocheilus from South Africa are considered stem-group representatives of the aporrhaids which inhabited the Weddellian Province in the early Tertiary. One new species of the strombid genusHippocrenes is regarded as an early species of the evolutionary lineage leading to the Seraphsidae. We report new examples of Cenozoic cold-seep communities from Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad, and Venezuela, and attempt to improve the stratigraphic dating of Cenozoic Caribbean seep communities using strontium isotope stratigraphy. Two seep faunas are distinguished in Barbados: the late Eocene mudstone-hosted ‘Joes River fauna’ consists mainly of large lucinid bivalves and tall abyssochrysoid gastropods, and the early Miocene carbonate-hosted ‘Bath Cliffs fauna’ containing the vesicomyid Pleurophopsis, the mytilid Bathymodiolus and small gastropods. Two new Oligocene seep communities from the Sinú River basin in Colombia consist of lucinid bivalves including Elongatolucina, thyasirid and solemyid bivalves, and Pleurophopsis. A new early Miocene seep community from Cuba includes Pleurophopsis and the large lucinid Meganodontia. Strontium isotope stratigraphy suggests an Eocene age for the Cuban Elmira asphalt mine seep community, making it the oldest in the Caribbean region. A new basal Pliocene seep fauna from the Dominican Republic is characterized by the large lucinid Anodontia (Pegophysema). In Trinidad we distinguish two types of seep faunas: the mudstone-hosted Godineau River fauna consisting mainly of lucinid bivalves, and the limestone-hosted Freeman’s Bay fauna consisting chiefly of Pleurophopsis, Bathymodiolus, and small gastropods; they are all dated as late Miocene. Four new seep communities of Oligocene to Miocene age are reported from Venezuela. They consist mainly of large globular lucinid bivalves including Meganodontia, and moderately sized vesicomyid bivalves. After the late Miocene many large and typical ‘Cenozoic’ lucinid genera disappeared from the Caribbean seeps and are today known only from the central Indo-Pacific Ocean. We speculate that the increasingly oligotrophic conditions in the Caribbean Sea after the closure of the Isthmus of Panama in the Pliocene may have been unfavorable for such large lucinids because they are only facultative chemosymbiotic and need to derive a significant proportion of their nutrition from suspended organic matter.  相似文献

Brandano, M. & Policicchio, G. 2011: Strontium stratigraphy of the Burdigalian transgression in the Western Mediterranean. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 315–328. A 87Sr/86Sr analysis of selected pectinid shells has been performed to refine the stratigraphical framework of the Burdigalian transgressive event. Samples were collected from shallow water successions of the Western Mediterranean area (North‐Eastern Sardinia, Southern Corsica, Central Apennines). The Western Mediterranean is the result of the interaction between the European and the African plates. Sardinia and Corsica were extended and rifted apart from the Iberian Peninsula during the opening of the Liguro‐Provencal basin, between 30 and 15 Ma. In the outcrops of Northern Sardinia and Southern Corsica, Burdigalian deposits nonconformably overlie Varisican granites. In the central Apennines the Burdigalian deposits paraconformably overlie the Cretaceous platform. These are transgressive deposits, characterized by the presence of Miogypsina globulina, which points out early to middle Burdigalian age. The Sr isotope ages indicate that marine transgression in Northern Sardina and Southern Corsica took place between 18.6 and 18.3 Ma, which could correspond to the eustatic sea level rise of the Bur3 third‐order sequence. In the Central Apennines the Burdigalian transgression was anticipated (18.8 Ma) by subsidence input linked to the eastward migration of the orogenic system. This input allowed the Miocene carbonate ramp to develop on the Cretaceous platform substrate, while successive eustatic rise controlled the evolution of the stratigraphical architecture. The following regressive phase is recorded in both the Apennine and Corsica successions. Discoveries of Late Triassic alatoform bivalves (family Wallowaconchidae) in Alaska and in south Asia and Arabia reveal a broad distribution for these tropical bivalves, overturning the concept of these bivalves being endemics of offshore island arc terranes in eastern Panthalassa. They occupied an area extending from central Tethys to the eastern Pacific margin of Panthalassa. The Tethyan wallowaconchids occur in nearshore environments on the north margin of Gondwana, indicating an environmental tolerance for continental shelf settings in addition to their primary occurrence on isolated oceanic islands. The new sites reveal a taxonomic diversity among wallowaconchids. Wallowaconchids present in India are conspecific with Wallowaconcha raylenea, the type species of Wallowaconcha, whereas wallowaconchids in Arabia are an undescribed taxon and wallowaconchids in south-central Alaska are small in size and a different undescribed taxon. All known wallowaconchids are of Norian age and they appear to be a wide-ranging component of Late Triassic tropical biotas.  相似文献
