Fish assemblages on two inshore rocky subtidal sites on the west coast of Scotland, were studied using diver visual surveys on a monthly basis between September 1995 and December 1999. A total of 17 689 fishes and 26 species were recorded from the two sites, Saulmore Point (056°27'N; 005°24'W) near Oban and Davy's Rock (055°46'N; 004°53'W) on the Isle of Great Cumbrae. The gobiid Thorogobius eppiphiatus , dominated the Saulmore Point site; six fish species accounted for >93% of total abundance at that site. At Davy's Rock four species contributed at least 93% of total fish abundance, and the dominant species was the labrid Ctenolabrus rupestris . Total abundance of the dominant species displayed a clear seasonal trend, and this was significantly related to recorded daily average seawater temperature. A maximum abundance of 4.9 fishes m−2 was recorded in November 1998 at Davy's Rock and 2.5 fishes m−2 at Saulmore Point in October 1998. Multivariate analysis indicated a degree of variation in assemblage structure between winter and summer at both sites. A number of species showed some degree of interannual variation, in particular the gobiid Gobiusculus flavescens whose abundance increased by over 300 times over a 5 month period in 1998. Correlation analysis showed that variation in annual winter seawater temperature could act as an indicator of interannual variation in abundance of some of the dominant species utilizing rocky subtidal habitats.  相似文献

The occurrence and abundance of the pelagic eggs of southern North Sea spring-spawning fish were analysed between 1984 and 2000. Species number varied between six (1986) and 14 (1999) and was positively correlated with sea surface temperature. With one exception, dab eggs were always the most abundant and usually highly dominant. Ranking of species depended on temperature, but no significant differences in ranking between years was discernible. Although with the increase in temperature in the 1990s a change in species assemblage was evident [species belonging to the boreal-Mediterranean (Lusitanian) group became more apparent in the species assemblage] this did not lead to an increased species diversity (Shannon Index) or a change in other community parameters. It appears that the recent developments regarding spawning stock biomass of commercial North Sea fish is reflected in the declining egg abundance of the respective commercial and larger species (i.e. cod, flounder, plaice) and an increase in abundance of the eggs of small species (i.e. long rough dab, rockling) over the years. In order to test the temporal stability within and the reproducibility of larval fish assemblages between years, the larval fish assemblage at Helgoland Roads, North Sea (NE Atlantic) was quantitatively sampled almost daily from January 2003 to December 2005. The survey resulted in a total of 462 samples containing 50,632 larval fish of at least 42 taxa. In winter the larval fish assemblage was mainly dominated by larvae emerging from demersal eggs. This changed gradually to larvae hatching from pelagic eggs. Larvae from pelagic eggs dominated the ichthyoplankton assemblage in summer. A remarkably stable seasonality in terms of dominance patterns with recurring, season-specific fish assemblages was observed over the 3 years, despite substantial variation in environmental conditions such as a temperature difference of almost 20°C between summer and winter. The lesser sandeel (Ammodytes marinus), was the only species which showed significant fluctuations in abundance between the years. After removal of this species from the analysis, the dominance patterns of the remaining fish species were almost identical between years.  相似文献

Functional approaches have shown promising results to detect degradation in marine fish assemblages. However, background variability significantly affects the amplitude of change that is detectable by a monitoring plan, and failing to detect such changes can have devastating consequences and carry aggravated recovery costs due to unnoticed degradation. The present study aimed to understand the relationship between topographic complexity in temperate reefs and the power to detect variations in fish-based metrics. Underwater visual census of fish assemblages was performed using strip transects and a Monte Carlo simulation approach was used to generate a large number of replicates and simulate three alternative hypotheses representing different magnitudes of change. Statistical power to detect differences between null and alternative hypotheses was estimated through 10,000 Mann–Whitney tests for numbers of replicates ranging from 2 to 15. Power tended to vary with topographic complexity particularly with small and medium changes in metric values and when using small sample sizes. While power increased with complexity for most metrics, some showed decreasing trends. With a large effect, 5–15 transects were needed, depending on the metric, to stabilise power above 0.80 independently of habitat features. A power of 0.95, however, could not be achieved for most metrics in all sites, even when using 15 transects. The observation that the power to detect degradation and recovery in temperate reef fish seems to vary with habitat features means that a monitoring programme that is correctly planned for a particular area may not be directly applicable in a nearby reef. Adding to the need to maximise power in monitoring, this study highlights the need to take into account habitat variability in these calculations and estimate habitat-independent sample sizes that are appropriate for the scale and location of interest.  相似文献

1. The effects of seasonal inundation on the biology of fishes on floodplains of large Amazonian rivers are well studied. However, the small seasonal changes in headwater streams are generally considered to have little effect on fish assemblages. 2. In this study, we analysed seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of fish in small Amazonian forest streams. We sampled fish with hand and seine nets in headwater streams in a 10 000 ha terra‐firme forest reserve near Manaus, Brazil. Each stream was surveyed at the end of the 2005 dry season, at the beginning of the 2006 rainy season and at the beginning of the 2006 dry season, by means of a standardized sampling effort. 3. The numbers of individuals and species caught were higher in the dry season, but rarefaction analyses indicated that greater species numbers could have been due simply to the larger number of individuals caught. 4. Between the dry and rainy season, the direction of changes in species composition in multivariate space varied among sites, especially for quantitative (abundance) data. However, the observed variation among sites was the less than expected if the directions of change were random. 5. Fish assemblages in the second dry season were more similar to those in the previous dry season than expected if changes in species composition among seasons were random. This indicates that a general seasonal pattern in fish assemblages can be detected, despite the existence of some erratic site‐specific changes. 6. Most of the species that showed large seasonal variations in density occupy temporary ponds during the rainy season, when much of the valley is inundated and pond networks form adjacent to streams. Short‐duration lateral migrations to these ponds may play an important role in the seasonal fish‐assemblage dynamics in Amazonian headwater streams. 7. Our results contrast with previous studies on small Amazonian streams, which have found little seasonal change in fish assemblages, and highlight the importance of the abundance of common species as an indicator of general fish assemblage structure in biological monitoring programmes.  相似文献

The abundance and size structure of wild fishes aggregated around the sea‐cages of two commercial Thunnus thynnus farms, including control locations, were assessed and compared over a 1 year period. The T. thynnus farms were located in the eastern Adriatic Sea, offshore of the islands of Ugljan and Bra?. Fish assemblages were evaluated through visual census using scuba at 2 month intervals at two sites within each farm. The data suggest that wild fish assemblages at the study sites differed greatly; 20 species occurred at the Ugljan farm and 17 at the Bra? farm, while only seven species were observed at the control locations. The abundance and diversity of wild fish assemblages were greater at the farms in comparison to control locations. The most abundant families were Sparidae and Belonidae (>80% of aggregated fishes). At both farms, the abundance and diversity of wild fishes were highest during summer, while diversity was lowest in winter and was mainly characterized by schools of bogue Boops boops and garfish Belone belone. Variability was also detected in spatial assemblages between farms; B. boops and B. belone were the most abundant species for the overall study at the Bra? farm, while B. belone and saddled bream Oblada melanura were the most abundant at the Ugljan farm. The settlement also played a significant role in farm‐associated fish assemblages, as both juveniles and advanced juveniles were common residents at farms. The majority of species which settled at the farms belonged to the sparids. Results indicate that aggregations of wild fishes at T. thynnus farms are persistent year‐round, though the assemblage compositions and size structures of dominant species vary in respect to location and season.  相似文献

Taxonomic composition and production dynamics of phytoplankton assemblages in Crater Lake, Oregon, were examined during time periods between 1984 and 2000. The objectives of the study were (1) to investigate spatial and temporal patterns in species composition, chlorophyll concentration, and primary productivity relative to seasonal patterns of water circulation; (2) to explore relationships between water column chemistry and the taxonomic composition of the phytoplankton; and (3) to determine effects of primary and secondary consumers on the phytoplankton assemblage. An analysis of 690 samples obtained on 50 sampling dates from 14 depths in the water column found a total of 163 phytoplankton taxa, 134 of which were identified to genus and 101 were identified to the species or variety level of classification. Dominant species by density or biovolume included Nitzschia gracilis, Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Ankistrodesmus spiralis, Mougeotia parvula, Dinobryon sertularia, Tribonema affine, Aphanocapsa delicatissima, Synechocystis sp., Gymnodinium inversum, and Peridinium inconspicuum. When the lake was thermally stratified in late summer, some of these species exhibited a stratified vertical distribution in the water column. A cluster analysis of these data also revealed a vertical stratification of the flora from the middle of the summer through the early fall. Multivariate test statistics indicated that there was a significant relationship between the species composition of the phytoplankton and a corresponding set of chemical variables measured for samples from the water column. In this case, concentrations of total phosphorus, ammonia, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and alkalinity were associated with interannual changes in the flora; whereas pH and concentrations of dissolved oxygen, orthophosphate, nitrate, and silicon were more closely related to spatial variation and thermal stratification. The maximum chlorophyll concentration when the lake was thermally stratified in August and September was usually between depths of 100 m and 120 m. In comparison, the depth of maximum primary production ranged from 60 m to 80 m at this time of year. Regression analysis detected a weak negative relationship between chlorophyll concentration and Secchi disk depth, a measure of lake transparency. However, interannual changes in chlorophyll concentration and the species composition of the phytoplankton could not be explained by the removal of the septic field near Rim Village or by patterns of upwelling from the deep lake. An alternative trophic hypothesis proposes that the productivity of Crater Lake is controlled primarily by long-term patterns of climatic change that regulate the supply of allochthonous nutrients.  相似文献

This study analyses the temporal and spatial changes in abundance and distribution of the warm water species round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) in the western Mediterranean over the last decades in relation to sea water temperature. In the western Mediterranean basin (1950–2003), a significant positive relationship was found between round sardinella landings and temperature anomalies. Along a latitudinal gradient off the Mediterranean Iberian coast (1989–2004), a gradual increase in species abundance was observed from south to north, with a certain time lag going northwards, associated with the increase in sea water temperature. The abundance of round sardinella in the two warmest and southernmost areas was positively and significantly correlated with sea surface temperature registered during the start of gonad maturation the previous year. In addition, the positive relationship established between water temperature and abundance of round sardinella in the coldest and northernmost study area demonstrates that there is a temperature limit for the distribution of this species in the western Mediterranean. In addition, this study analyses round sardinella larvae distribution and abundance in the summers of 2003 and 2004, and conducts a comparison with the situation 20 years ago (summer 1983). Results show a marked increase in larval abundance during the last decades and the present appearance of larvae in the northernmost study areas, where they did not occur 20 years ago. This indicates the successful reproduction of round sardinella in the northern part of the Mediterranean, where the species has expanded, confirming its establishment in the area.  相似文献

The Arauca River harbors a considerable fish biodiversity, yet it remains poorly sampled and the knowledge about its fish communities is incomplete. We studied the taxonomic and functional composition and diversity of catfish assemblages in one lotic and one lentic habitat of a segment of this floodplain during one hydrological cycle, from August 2014 to August 2015, comprising six samplings using gillnets, and identified the relationships between catfish traits and the environment based on five limnological variables. The functional structure was studied through 11 morphological measures and the species diets. We identified 31 catfish species and nine trophic groups. There were significant differences in species composition and diversity between habitats and months, but the functional structure of the catfishes was only determined by the temporal variability. The functional structure of the catfish assemblages was ordered by morphological traits related to locomotion, habitat use, and trophic ecology and these traits were correlated with the limnological variables, supporting the existence of environmental filters. Integrating the taxonomic and functional perspectives can provide a more complete picture of the ecological patterns of freshwater fish assemblages in the Neotropics and can help us predict how these assemblages might change in response to anthropogenic alterations of the environment.  相似文献

An intertidal salt marsh fish assemblage inhabiting two creeks on North Bull Island, Dublin Bay was sampled monthly from June 2000 until May 2002. Water temperature and salinity were recorded in situ and samples were also taken for Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and Chlorophyll a. All fish caught were weighed and measured and classified into functional guilds. A total of 6,549 individuals comprising 10 fish species from 10 families were recorded within the two creeks. The community was dominated by a few species, a feature common to other estuarine fish populations. Of the 10 species found, the common goby, Pomatoschistus microps, the 3-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, the thick-lipped grey mullet, Chelon labrosus and the flounder, Platichthys flesus contributed 98.4% of all fish sampled. The fish population of the channels at Bull Island, Dublin, was dominated by the resident gobies (true estuarine resident species), but also hosted juveniles of species such as the bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (marine juvenile migrant species). In turn, the nekton populations were dominated by the brown shrimp, Crangon crangon and the fairy shrimp, Palaemonetes varians especially in winter when fewer fish (numbers of species and abundance) were found. Multivariate analysis of fish diversity and abundance revealed a strong seasonal pattern but there was little evidence of difference between creeks, nor of tidal (spring/neap) effects. The estuarine fish using the intertidal marsh creeks have been little studied in Europe yet they play a major role with the decapods in these habitats. This role needs to be quantified for a proper understanding of the system’s function.  相似文献

We compared environmental influences on the assemblages of stream fishes of contiguous but biogeographically distinct parts of the Upper Paraguay and Paraná basins in Brazil, aiming to describe the main distribution patterns of fish species in the headwater streams. We analyzed bimonthly samples in 10 streams in each basin from January to November 2004. Sixty fish species were collected, including 40 species in streams of the Paraguay Basin and 42 species in streams of the Paraná Basin. The species abundance rank did not differ between the basins. We found a clear differentiation between the Paraguay and Paraná stream fish assemblages. There were significant differences in species composition among streams, but no seasonal differences in species composition. Connectivity between streams explains the differences in species composition for the Paraguay streams, but not for the Paraná streams. Hydrological characteristics were the main factors determining species distribution in both basins, suggesting that the migratory capacity of each species and biogeographical barriers may act to filter the local species composition from the total species pool of colonizers. During the period fromlate May through December 1981, tree-dwelling beetles were regularly surveyed at three deciduous oak and two evergreen forests in the vicinity of Gifu City. Chrysomelidae and Curculionidae were abundant in these forests. The species diversity and the seasonal succession of species were most apparent in May and June. The three deciduous oak forests, with many species and high equitability, showed more diverse community structure, but fewer individuals, when compared with the two evergreen forests. Furthermore, the species compositions of the deciduous oak forests were seasonally and spatially more heterogeneous than those of the evergreen forests. A few dominant species, however, had a strong influence on the community structure. The relationship between the diversity index and sample size was examined. The diversity index changed with the sample size, and the range of the variation diminished as the sample size increased. However, equilibrium was not reached even in the largest sample size used in this study (20 samples). There was a significantly high correlation (P<0.001) in diversity index between the smaller sample sizes (5, 10, 15) and the largest. It was, therefore, shown that community structures can be compared on the basis of the diversity indices from samples of constant size, even when the samples are small. Contribution No. 108 from Lab. Seasonal dynamics of macrobenthos were studied at five stations located at depths of 10–60 min in the Far East State Marine Reserve (southern Peter the Great Bay) during 1984–1987. Sampling was conducted at stations once per season. Stable seasonal fluctuations of the population density and the biomass in basic taxonomic groups were found. As a rule, the quantitative parameters were augmented in spring and summer, and decreased in fall and winter. This was caused, first of all, by summer fluctuations of the number of small and short-lived species of polychaetes and bivalve molluscs. The amplitude of fluctuations decreased with increasing depth. Variation in the quantitative parameters was significant at the community level only at the most shallow-water stations. It was assumed that this phenomenon might be caused by the seasonal consumption of macrobenthos by bottom fish and by the periodicity of detritus supply to the bottom from the water column with a background of varying environmental temperature parameters and of mass settling of benthic larvae. The seasonal changes in parameters began and ceased earlier in 1986–1987 than 1984–1985, which was related to an appreciable decrease in water temperature in 1986. During the period of study, an increasing trend of parameters, apparently part of a long-term cycle, was recorded both for individual groups and for entire communities, and was the most appreciable at greater depths (47–60 m).  相似文献

Aims

To delineate boundaries of vegetation belts, characterize these belts by indicator species, plant functional types and plant distribution types, and explore options for climate change monitoring.

Location

Three research sites in the continental inland of West Greenland.

Methods

Based on spatially constrained clustering of 147 vegetation relevés and 145 transect plots of plant communities, boundaries of altitudinal vegetation belts were assessed. Indicators for altitudinal sections were identified from 664 vegetation relevés among vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and plant functional types using indicator species analysis. The performance of different plant groups along the altitudinal gradient was visualized with response curves.

Results

Boundaries of altitudinal vegetation belts were detected at 400, 800 and 1175 m a.s.l. on north‐facing slopes and at 450, 900 and 1250 m a.s.l. on south‐facing slopes. The resulting four vegetation belts were well defined by 99 indicator species and nine indicator plant functional types. Species, plant functional types and vascular plant distribution types showed clear sequences along the altitudinal gradient, which partly resemble their distribution along the latitudinal gradient.

Conclusions

As an easily observable expansion of shrubs and a decline of mosses and lichens is expected, the boundary at 400/450 m a.s.l. is particularly promising for climate change monitoring. The anticipated replacement of numerous cryophilous by thermophilous indicator species, as well as an obvious shift of plant functional types suggest several monitoring options at 800/900 m a.s.l. The summit areas above 1175/1250 m a.s.l., having a discontinuous plant cover, are considered to be especially vulnerable to fast invasion by species of lower altitudes such as woody plants and sedges. Due to steep gradients and short migration distances in mountains, it can be assumed that these anticipated changes in the study area will be stronger and faster than the already observed changes along the latitudinal gradient in lowland areas of the Arctic.

Macroinvertebrate assemblages of 22 temporary ponds with different hydroperiod were sampled monthly during a dry year (2005–2006) and a wet year (2006–2007). Coleopteran and Heteropteran adults were most abundant at the end of the hydroperiod, while Coleopteran larvae, mainly Dytiscidae, were mostly recorded in spring. Macroinvertebrate assemblages differed between study years. The shorter hydroperiod of ponds in the dry year constrained the length of the aquatic period for macroinvertebrates, and three distinct wet phases of community composition could be distinguished: filling phase, aquatic phase and drying phase. In the wet year, with a longer pond hydroperiod, five phases could be identified, with the aquatic phase differentiated into winter, early spring and late spring phases. Dispersers such as Anisops sardeus, Berosus guttalis or Anacaena lutescens were typical during the filling phase and Corixa affinis or Enochrus fuscipennis during the drying phase. The ponds with intermediate hydroperiod showed a similar composition (mainly dispersers) at the beginning and end of their wet period; this is not being seen in early drying or long hydroperiod ponds. A general pattern was detected, with similar variation between both years, which may be associated with the life histories of the macroinvertebrate taxa recorded. Guest editors: B. Oertli, R. This is the first survey of the composition and seasonal density dynamics of the pelagic polychaete larvae in Amurskii Bay. This is a summary of the results of two years of observations (1996–1998). The larvae of 14 polychaete families have been recorded. The greatest number of species have been found in the family Spionidae. The most common were the larvae of Harmothoe imbricata (family Polynoidae) and Paraprionospio sp. (family Spionidae). The larvae of polychaetes have been found in plankton throughout the year and have two density peaks. The first peak was due to the spawning of H. imbricata; the second one was provided by representatives of several species of the family Spionidae, mostly Paraprionospio sp., Polydora ciliata, and P. caeca.  相似文献

BackgroundBaltic herring and European sardine are pelagic, fish of particular ecological importance, on the one hand control numbers of planktonic organisms, and on the other hand exist as food for predators on higher trophic levels. Moreover, these fish are among the main species caught for human consumption. Rare earth elements (REEs) come mainly from geogenic sources but, due to their use in technology, agriculture and medicine, the importance of anthropogenic sources is growing steadily.MethodsSamples used for the study were available on the market. Fresh materials of fish muscle, ova and seminal fluid were mineralized and elements were determined by means of inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).ResultsThe conducted research indicated the presence of REEs in the muscles of the Baltic herring (∑REE = 0.076 ± 0.047 mg/kg) and European sardine (∑REE = 0.191 ± 0.163 mg/kg), with a clear dominance of heavy REEs in both fish species. Trace elements (TE) in the muscles of the tested fish demonstrated a similar system of concentration (Baltic herring: Zn > As > Se > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd; European sardine: Zn > As > Se > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb > Cd). REEs and TEs in these fish were presence in ova and seminal fluid indicates intergenerational transfer.ConclusionChanges in the concentrations of some trace elements (As, Cu, Cd) in the muscles of herring indicate increases compared to the historical data. The availability of metals in the aquatic environment may be determined by ongoing climate changes, effected water salinity and warming increased availability of labile forms of trace metals. Decline trends in the condition of pelagic fish need to extend the research in the context of contemporary environmental threats.  相似文献

Studies of epiphytic dinoflagellates in Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan in 2008–2011 revealed the presence of 13 species. Five of the species are known as potentially toxic: Amphidinium carterae, A. operculatum, Ostreopsis cf. ovata, O. cf. siamensis and Prorocentrum lima. The maximum species richness and abundance of epiphytic dinoflagellates were observed in autumn (from September to October). Ostreopsis spp. were most widely distributed and predominated, amounting to 99% of the total density of dinoflagellates. Multi-year seasonal dynamics of Ostreopsis spp. in Peter the Great Bay showed that these cells appear as epiphyton in August after maximum warming of surface waters (22–24 °С) and disappear in early November, when the water temperature decreases below 7 °С. Ostreopsis spp. proliferation occurred in September, when the water temperature was 17.2–21.0 °C. The highest densities of Ostreopsis spp. were recorded on September 9, 2010 on the rhodophyte Neorhodomela aculeata – 230 × 103 cells g−1 DW or 52 × 103 cells g−1 FW. The spatial distribution of epiphytic dinoflagellates was investigated in the near-shore areas of Peter the Great Bay during the second half of September 2010 to evaluate the role of hydrodynamic conditions. Epiphytic dinoflagellates were not found in sheltered sites having weak mixing hydrodynamics. However, the abundances of Ostreopsis spp. were significantly higher at sites having moderate turbulence compared to biotopes experiencing strong wave action. Densities of Ostreopsis spp. were not significantly different on macrophytes with branched thallus of all taxonomic divisions. However, the average cell densities of Ostreopsis spp. on green algae with branched thallus were significantly higher than on green algae having laminar thallus.  相似文献
