Spatial distribution patterns of two emergent tropical rainforest tree species (Dryobalanops aromatica & D. lanceolata) were examined in where they were dominant (17–20% of total basal area of canopy trees) in Sarawak, East Malaysia. Newly established seedlings (< 2 years old) were restricted to areas < 40 m from mother trees for both species, suggesting a limited seed dispersal. Seedling (< 1 cm in dbh) density was highest around conspecific adults ( 30 cm in dbh). Negative spatial patterns were observed between larger juveniles (1–5 cm in dbh) and conspecific adults for both species; the most dense populations of sapling (1–5 cm in dbh) and poles (5–30 cm in dbh) were found at a distance of 15–20 m from the nearest conspecific adult. Seedlings of both species were distributed randomly with respect to light conditions evaluated by a forest floor diffuse site factor and a canopy closure index. Saplings of both species, and poles of D. lanceolata, were distributed under more open conditions than expected from spatially random distributions, and from average light conditions of all species of the same size classes. Possible mechanisms for the observed distribution patterns and intermediate canopy dominance of Dryobalanops were discussed from the viewpoints of gap-dynamics and distance-dependent mortality.  相似文献

The competition-density (C-D) effect for given times and self-thinning over time in even-aged, natural, pure stands of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. were analyzed with the reciprocal equation of the C-D effect in self-thinning stands, and the equation describing the time-trajectory of mean stem volume and stand density. The C-D effect and self-thinning were consistently well explained by the two equations. Differences in mean stem volume and in stand density among the stands tended to merge with increasing stand age. The self-thinning line with a slope of approximately –3/2 was reached by the higher density stand prior to the medium and lower density stands. The skewness of tree height distribution showed positive values, which means that the distribution is more or less L-shaped, and in addition the skewness decreased with increasing mean tree height, which indicates that smaller trees died as the stands grew. This trend is consistent with the asymmetric (one-sided) competition hypothesis that self-thinning is driven by competition for light. The tree height distribution was analyzed using the Weibull distribution. The location parameter h min of the Weibull distribution increased with increasing stand age, and the scale parameter a tended to increase slightly with increasing stand age. The range of the shape parameter b of the Weibull distribution corresponded to that of the skewness.  相似文献

A hypothesis that the pattern of spatial leaf distribution in forest canopies is numerically related to the exponent of the self-thinning relationship in even-aged monocultures was tested by evaluating the crown fractal dimension of Pinus banksiana (jack pine) and Populus tremuloides (quaking aspen) in Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada. Pure species stands that were considered the most dense for a given mean tree size were measured to establish the empirical self-thinning relationships. The value of the self-thinning exponent was estimated as –1.42 with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) (–1.47, –1.36) for Pinus banksiana, and –1.29 with 95% CI (–1.45, –1.14) for Populus tremuloides. For each species the box dimension of spatial leaf distribution was estimated from unit cylinders described by sequentially lowering in forest canopies, horizontal flaps of one of various diameters attached to the top of a height-measuring pole. The box dimension appeared as 1.95 (1.84, 2.06) for Pinus banksiana, and 2.24 (2.05, 2.43) for Populus tremuloides. By assuming that the box dimension is equivalent to the fractal dimension at the inter-population level, the self-thinning exponent was predicted to be –1.53 (–1.62, –1.45) for Pinus banksiana, and –1.33 (–1.45, –1.23) for Populus tremuloides. The empirical exponent was equivalent to that predicted from the box fractal dimension, as judged by the 95% CI of the dimensions. We conclude that spatial patterns of leaf distribution in forest canopies, as being characterized by the box fractal dimension, are closely related to the value of the self-thinning exponent in the dense monocultures of the species we examined.  相似文献

In 2003, the last existing population of Pulsatilla patens in Germany was studied in the nature reserve “Garchinger Heide”, a calcareous grassland north of Munich. The aim of our study was to evaluate the endangerment of the species in ancient and young grasslands of the nature reserve. Therefore, the size, structure and generative reproduction of the population in relation to vegetation characteristics were investigated. Total population size and mean density of individual plants in different zones of the nature reserve were determined by a GPS-supported counting and compared to a mapping of 1991. The population structure was analyzed by counting the number of individuals of different age–state classes on 4 m2 plots in ancient and young grasslands of the nature reserve. The cover of phanerogams, cryptogams, litter and bare soil was studied in order to characterize habitat quality.In 2003, about 9700 individuals of P. patens were counted which means that population size strongly decreased in comparison to 1991 (about 27 000). In the ancient grasslands, the number of individuals of all age–state classes of P. patens correlated negatively with the cover of phanerogams and litter. In contrast, phanerogam and cryptogam cover had a positive influence on the number of individuals of all age–state classes on a topsoil-removal site due to protection from desiccation. This site was the only one in the nature reserve, where population size increased between 1991 and 2003. The large population size indicates that short-term endangerment or extinction of the species in the nature reserve is not very likely. Nevertheless, the management of the nature reserve has to be optimized in order to prevent a further long-term decrease of the population size of P. patens.  相似文献

Liana diversity was inventoried in four tropical dry evergreen forest sites that are characterized by numerous trees, of short stature and small diameter, and a varying degree of anthropogenic disturbance, on the Coromandel coast of south India. A 1-ha plot was established in each of the four sites and was subdivided into 100 quadrats of 10 m× 10 m. All lianas 1 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) rooted within the plot were enumerated. The species richness and density of lianas, with respect to site disturbance and forest stature, varied across the sites. Liana density totaled 3307 individuals (range 497–1163 individuals ha–1) and species richness totaled 39 species (range 24–29 species ha–1) representing 34 genera and 24 families. Combretaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Capparaceae and Vitaceae were the well-represented families. The top five species Strychnos minor, Combretum albidum, Derris ovalifolia, Jasminum angustifolium and Reissantia indica contributed 55% of total density. The slopes of the species–area curves were different for each of the four sites and the curve stabilized in only one site. Of the four climbing modes recognized among the total 39 species, 18 were twiners (56% of the total density). Eight species (24% of density) were tendril climbers and 12 species (16% of density) were scramblers. Hugonia mystax was the only hook climber. All the 39 species and 88% of liana density were encountered within a category of 6 cm dbh or less, and a similar pattern prevailed in the individual sites. Of the three diaspore dispersal modes found among the 39 liana species, animal (64%) and wind (23%) dispersal were predominant over the autochorous mode (13%). Liana diversity and distribution in dry forest communities appear to be influenced by forest stature and site disturbance levels. In the light of the extent of liana diversity and sacred grove status of the study sites, the need for forest conservation, involving local people, is emphasized.  相似文献

Pinus taiwanensis is a widely distributed species in the southeastern China (Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, Human, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan provinces) at an elevation of 700–2000 m. This pine is a pioneer in forest succession and is often used as a species for afforestation in this region at an elevation above 700 m. This study was carried out at Guanshanyuan, Zhejiang province, at a latitude of N 28° 18, a longitude of E 119° 16 and an altitude of 800–1502 m above sea level. On the basis of a census of all individuals of Pinus taiwanensis at different successional stages and various habitats, age structure, spatial pattern, density, biomass of population and their dynamics were described. Considering the population dynamics throughout the successional process, three phases could be recognized. Until about 9–10 years after Pinus taiwanensis invaded the stands, the density of population was increased by the recruitments along with increase of the mean tree weight and population biomass (phase I). Thereafter, the population was in full density state, the biomass of population and the mean tree weight increased exponentially, while the density was decreased drastically by the self-thinning and the invasion of other broad-leaved trees (phase II). The –3/2 power law of natural thinning was applicable to the populations in this phase. When the broad-leaved trees reached the canopy, although the mean tree weight increased slowly, the density and biomass of Pinus taiwanensis population decreased gradually (phase III) until the population senesced and retreated from the successional series completely. The population dynamics of Pinus taiwanensis during the successional process was in common with pioneer species in forest succession. At some special habitats such as rocky steep slopes and ridges, however, Pinus taiwanensis population could form such an edaphic climax community that the population density, biomass and the mean tree weight in phase III could be in a stable state for very long period.  相似文献

High tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian Ecuador   总被引:14,自引:4,他引:10  
In a 1 ha square plot of terra firme forest at 260 m elevation in Amazonian Ecuador, all trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) 5 cm were studied. There were 1561 individuals, 473 species, 187 genera and 54 families. Of these, 693 individuals, 307 species, 138 genera and 46 families had a dbh 10 cm. This is the highest number of tree species ever recorded for a tropical rain forest sample of this size. In both dbh classes, the most species-rich families were: Fabaceae sensu lato (including Mimosaceae and Caesalpiniaceae), Lauraceae and Sapotaceae; the most species-rich genera, were Pouteria, Inga and Protium. The vertical space was partitioned among species: 166 species were found only in the 5–10 dbh cm class and were mostly sub-canopy treelets, and 307 species with dbh 10 cm were mostly large canopy trees.  相似文献

The transfer of hay from a donor site onto a receptor site is currently a widely accepted restoration procedure to establish grasslands with high biodiversity and rich in species. The impact of this procedure on vegetation has been well studied. However, its influence on the insect population has not been investigated. This study verifies that individuals of Metrioptera bicolor (Orthopteroidea: Tettigoniidae) were successfully transferred with hay. Three individuals transferred with the hay were still able to reproduce after the hay transfer. This result corresponds to 4.6% of the 65 marked individuals that were mapped on the donor site on the day of hay transfer. Of the estimated 1220–3013 individuals on the donor site (8300 m2), 56–139 reproductively able individuals were transferred with the hay. Suitable habitat structures presupposed, this number is sufficient to initiate a persistent colonisation of the species on the receptor site. The loss rate of M. bicolor due to grass cutting totalled 42%, which can be considered a very high mortality rate. Comparable studies on bush crickets show a medium loss rate of 21%, in relation to body size.  相似文献

Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) population surveys were conducted during 1996–2002 in the island of Crete (Greece) to document population status and structure. Fieldwork was carried out during the breeding period when birds could be monitored in their colonies. Total population size was estimated at 379 individuals (range = 341–417) with adult birds comprising 63%. The breeding population was estimated at 141 pairs, which were distributed on an average in 23 colonies per year (range = 16–30) while the mean number of breeding pairs that laid eggs was 98 (range= 64–126). Crete thus supports the largest insular population of the species in the world and hosts 70–80% of the breeding population of the species in Greece. Population density was estimated at 6.9 individuals/100 km2, 2.6 breeding pairs/100 km2 and 1.8 nesting pairs/100 km2. The average home range of an occupied colony (i.e., breeding group) was estimated at ca. 204 km2 producing a theoretical foraging range of 8 km radius around the breeding cliff. No trends in the total number of individuals and breeding pairs appeared to exist, although significant differences in population size of individual colonies occurred between the years. The majority of the population was concentrated in small-sized colonies, which showed a low occupancy rate. The number of abandoned sites and the colonization of new ones could represent a shift of breeding pairs to alternative colonies provoked by local food abundance and conspesific attraction.  相似文献

Summary Individuals of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acarina: Tetranychidae), with and without a capacity for diapause, coexist in central Japan. Diapause appears to be adaptive because females in diapause suffered less mortality than non-diapausing individuals when frozen at –24°C for more than 4 h. However non-diapausing females showed good survival up to 4 h of freezing. Active non-diapausing mites survived on rose leaves in Kyoto (35°N) throughout the winters of 1988–1989 and 1989–1990. Cultures of mites with low (LD) and high (HD) diapause capacities at 18°C and 9L-15D photoperiod were successfully selected from the rose population and from a population on chrysanthemum in Nara (34.4°N). Their life-history traits at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C were characterized. HD and LD mites from both populations were of similar ages at first reproduction at 15–30° C. However, at temperatures 20° C, HD individuals produced more eggs than LD individuals, resulting in higher fecundity and intrinsic rate of natural increase. These traits allow HD individuals, which stop breeding between October and April, to increase faster in summer than LD individuals. This provides a mechanism, together with climatic fluctuations, in maintaining the coexistence of diapausing and non-diapausing T. urticae in Kyoto where winter conditions are rarely lethal to the non-diapausing individuals.  相似文献

Forest community dynamics were studied for 4 years in a 6 ha permanent plot of species rich, old-growth, temperate deciduous forest in Ogawa Forest Reserve, central Japan. The gap formation rate, recruitment, mortality, gain and loss rate in basal area during 4 years were 42 m2 ha–1 yr–1, 1.74% yr–1, 1.19% yr–1, 1.12% yr–1 and 0.88% yr–1, respectively. The turnover time calculated from them ranged from 58 to 240 years. Both the mortality and mortality factors were size dependent; trees in middle size class had smallest mortality, and the proportion of the trees killed by disturbances increased with size. Gap creations were concentrated in a particular year, suggesting a large heterogeneity in time. Spatial distribution of recruited trees were biassed to the old gaps (older than 4 years), especially that of the species with Bell-shaped dbh distribution (shade intolerant) strongly associated with the gaps. Recruitment in tree stems and the loss of basal area, thus had the larger variability than mortality of stems and this forest, and the species with L-shaped dbh distribution seemed to going to increase the importance in the future if the present trend continues to be held. The turnover time of population is positively correlated with the maximum dbh size of the species, indicating the slow change of the population of large sized species.  相似文献

Summary The population structure of the endemic San Francisco Bay Area damselfly, Ischnura gemina, is examined using mark-recapture methods. Average daily movements, sex ratios, population size, maturation times, survivorship, and dispersion patterns, were recorded and calculated from two small (each less than one hectare) sites 150 m apart in Glen Canyon, San Francisco. Of 563 adults marked over 36 days, 412 (73%) were recaptured at least once. Average daily movements for males and females were less than 6 m, suggesting local movements. However, directional movements of 150 m were observed from one site to the other, indicating dispersal potential. One of the populations was a satellite composed entirely, of emigrating individuals from the other site; no larvae or teneral adults were found at the satellite area. Males were more aggregated than females at both sites. Both sexes were highly clumped at one site but were nearly randomly dispersed at the other site. Total population size for both sexes tended to be constant throughout the sampling period, at about 250. Adult population estimates showed more males were present than, females, but larval counts at one site indicated only a slight excess of males. Average life span estimates ranged from 6.5 days (females) to 23.3 days (males). One male lived at least 36 days. Maturation time for males was about 5–7 days, 7–10 days for females. A long life span and long flight season (March to November) are probably adaptations to the foggy San Francisco climate. All populations of I. gemina located to date are small, possibly originating from founders from nearby demes, and may be subject to different selection pressures. The dispersal potential of I. gemina may increase its chance of survival should small urban demes be threatened with destruction.  相似文献

Biodiversity of woody species was investigated in Ialong and Raliangsacred groves of the Jaintia hills in Meghalaya, northeast India. These grovesrepresent the climax subtropical broad-leaved forest of the area. A total of 738individuals belonging to 82 species, 59 genera and 39 families was identified ina 0.5 ha plot of the Ialong sacred grove, whereas the same area in theRaliang sacred grove had 469 individuals of 80 species, 62 genera and 41families. About 32% species were common to both groves. Lauraceae, with10–17 species, was the dominant family. The canopy and subcanopy stratawere respectively composed of 28 and 33% of the total tree species in theforest. The number of species as well as stem density were greater for the treesof lower dbh (5–15 cm) class compared to the higher (> 66cm) dbh class. The majority of the species showed a contagiousdistribution pattern and low frequency. The basal area varied from 57.4 to 71.4m2 ha–1. Species richness within theforest varied from 3 to 15 per 100 m2 in Ialong and 3 to 12 per 100m2 in Raliang. The dominance–distribution curves showed highequitability and low dominance in both groves.  相似文献

Two micronized waste products were evaluated in a closed recirculation system for their suitability to replace a costly die of live algae in the culture of the Sudanese fairy shrimp,Streptocephalus proboscideus. The test population was kept at a density of 50 individuals 1–1 (sex ratio:1/1). An agricultural waste product (YM20; mixture of pea and corn), and an industrial waste product (POME; Palm Oil Mill Effluent) were fed at two regimes: 0.1 and 0.2mg DW animal–1 h–1. The microalgaSelenastrum capricornutum, used as a reference diet at a density of 2.0±0.82 × 105 cells ml–1, proved adequate in preliminary screening experiments. The effect of the diets and feeding regimes on selected biological variables and water quality were followed by weekly observations and measurements. Results in terms of growth (=increase in length), cyst production, and mortality were more successful when animals were supplied high densities of YM20 than in all other treatments: mean brood size was 155±6 cysts with a maximum of 266. Length after 6 weeks about 2 cm while this ranged between1.4–1.7 cm for the other treatments. Weekly mortality rate was comparable under high food conditions. Mortality rate gradually increased from 5% in the first week to 15% in the last week. Water quality, especially nitriate concentration (measured as NO2-N), was slightly better in the dry food fed than in the algae fed cultures. Present results are promising for large-scale culturing ofS. proboscideus in a cost-effective way by making use of agro-industrial waste products.  相似文献

The DBH-class distribution in natural deciduous broad-leaved forests was elucidated with a power function. A power function (y=ax b, y: stem density, x: represents DBH class, a and b: constants) fits the distribution better than an exponential function (y = a exp bx). The parameter b in the power function is approximately –2. This means that the natural forests studied have a patch-mosaic structure and that tree cohorts regenerate from gaps. Parameter a implies the number of juveniles, and b means size-dependent mortality. The value of –2 for parameter b means that when trees in a given DBH class double their DBH, the density of the size class should decrease by one-fourth. This phenomenon results from self-thinning and is caused by horizontal space competition among trees, called the `tile model'. The parameter describing DBH-class distribution for a forest with self-thinning patches should be approximately –2. I call this the `–2 power law' for DBH-class distribution. In a typical natural forest dominated by deciduous broadleaf tree species, trees are recognized as pioneer or climax species by the parameters describing their regeneration patterns. When I applied the power functional model to the DBH-class distribution of each dominant species, in pioneer species parameter a was high and b was less than –2 (markedly less than zero), suggesting that there are many juveniles, but mortality is high. On the other hand, in climax species parameter a was low value and the value of b was larger (negative, but closer to zero), suggesting that there are not many juveniles, but mortality is low. A power-function analysis of DBH-class distribution can be used to clarify the patch mosaic structure of a forest, and to clarify the regeneration pattern of pioneer and climax species by applying the function for each species.  相似文献

Four parasitoids were imported from five countries in Eurasia and released in northwestern Washington, US, to control the apple ermine moth (AEM), Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller, which colonized the Northwest around 1981. From 1988 to 1991, 95,474 individuals of Ageniaspis fuscicollis (Dalman) from France, China, Korea, and Russia were released in Washington. Parasitism of AEM increased 4- to 5-fold over that produced by preexisting natural enemies between 1989 and 1994 at 22 monitored sites. Subsequently, the wasp dispersed up to 20 km from release sites. A. fuscicollis also parasitized the cherry ermine moth, Yponomeuta padellus (L.), which was discovered in the Pacific Northwest in 1993. A total of 1813 individuals of Herpestomus brunnicornis (Gravenhorst) from France, Korea, and Japan were released in 1989–1991, and 26 wasps were recovered in 1994–1995. From 1989 to 1991, 2647 Diadegma armillata (Gravenhorst) individuals from France were released. D. armillata was recovered at one site in 1991 two months following release, but no other recoveries have been made. A total of 8274 Eurystheae scutellaris(Robineau-Desvoidy) individuals were released in 1989 to 1991. However, this tachinid has not been recovered. A consistent decline of AEM populations occurred in 1989–1995, including at sites where A. fuscicollis was not recovered, suggesting other factors also contributed to this pest’s decline. Now well established in western Washington, A. fuscicollis may help suppress future outbreaks of Y. malinellus and its congener, Y. padellus.  相似文献

Synopsis The numbers of trout,Salmo trutta, in Granslev », Denmark, were estimated by the removal method on 18 dates from March 1974 to March 1976. Populations density varied from 0.39 to 0.74 trout m–2 in 1974–1975 and from 0.36 to 0.59 m–2 in 1975–1976 and at all times four or five year classes were present. The age structure of the population was unstable and the variable natural survival, immigration into and emigration from the study site could not be separated. An annual growth cycle with the most rapid growth for all year classes taking place from May to early August was found. Statistically significant differences between different years occurred in the growth of the 0,I and II age groups, but no evidence of density-dependent growth was found. The biomass ranged from 35.4 to 9.5 g m–2. The total mean annual biomass was 22.8 and 14.7 g m–2 in the two years and the II group made the greatest contribution, 44 and 48%, respectively. During 1975–1976 the mean annual biomass of each year class only was about two-thirds of that in 1974–1975. Annual production in the two years was 25.7 (range 24.7–28.5) and 12.6 g m–2 (range 11.7–15.0) and the II group accounted for about 46 and 38% of the production. In addition eel,Anguilla anguilla, produced about 0.5 g m–2 yr–2. The unstable age structure of the trout population was compared with trout populations from other streams. The importance of immigration as a recruitment process in middle and lower reaches of streams and of migrations as a mechanism to optimise utilization of the total stream habitat, as well as temperature as a factor controlling the growth rate are discussed.  相似文献

We assessed information on the population structure of the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, at Atol das Rocas, northeastern Brazil, through underwater observations. Based on photographic records of natural distinctive marks for individual recognition, we used probabilistic estimators (Petersen–Bailey and Jolly–Seber) to assess population size. We found that 46% of the sharks (194 individuals) had distinctive marks. The population size was estimated in 368 individuals, using the Petersen–Bailey estimator, and 339 individuals using the Jolly–Seber estimator.  相似文献

The genetic demographic parameters of rural populations of Kyrgyzstan have been studied. The rural population of Kyrgyzstan has the following demographic characteristics: (1) it is demographically young (the population mean age is 25–28 years); (2) the sex ratio in reproductive age groups is unfavorable; (3) the fertility is high (5.78–7.68 pregnancies and 4.27–5.20 surviving children per woman of postreproductive age; (4) interethnic marriages are rare (1.0–5.9%), whereas consanguineous marriages are frequent (1.4–12%); (5) Crow's indices are relatively low (I tot = 0.24–0.29, I m = 0.05–0.13, I f = 0.14–0.22); and (6) both male and female contributions of different regions of the republic make unequal contributions to the gametic structure of the population, with the gametic structure varying from generation to generation. We report tree community diversity, guild composition, and forest structure from three 1.2 ha (100 m × 120 m) permanent forest research plots on Tutuila, American Samoa, an isolated volcanic island in the South Pacific Ocean. Plots were established in three habitat types of lowland hill forest: two in mature tracts that differed in substrate type (talus vs non-talus), and a third in a 30–40 year-old abandoned plantation on non-talus soil. We encountered a total of 57 tree species 10 cm dbh. Richness was similar across sites, but composition differed substantially. We were able to classify with confidence 24 tree species into four distinct guilds based on forest-type preference: early successional or persistent successional (disturbed forest), generalist (no preference), or mature-phase. Sample size limitations or interactions between site age and substrate precluded categorization of all species. Thirty-eight percent (9/24) of the tree species were successional, a result which contrasts sharply with data from (formerly) continental forest in Panama. Spatial distributions of 33 species revealed 17 species exhibiting clumping or hyperdispersion (i.e., regular spacing) in at least one site. Possible non-anthropogenic mechanisms promoting clumping in the plots were (a) topography (edaphic), (b) gap affiliation, (c) inefficient or altered patterns of propagule dispersal, and (d) lack of natural seedling predators. Forest structure differed across site type, with stem densities highest in regenerating forest; conversely, regenerating forest had the lowest basal areas. Steep talus forest sequestered the most carbon (344.3 Mg ha–1), and secondary forest sustained only 42% of levels found in talus forest (145.5 Mg ha–1). Mature forest on non-talus soil sequestered the majority of carbon in mid-sized trees (30–50 cm dbh). Future assessments of land-use cover and biomass will provide for a complete estimate of the carbon budget of Tutuila. Finally, the results of this study suggest that conservation of the native fauna is essential in retaining the potential for regeneration of native forest after large-scale disturbance.  相似文献
