This paper presents a skin mass found in the nostril of a boy who had no other anomalies. The skin mass was similar to the pedunculated masses with median cleft that have been reported previously. The literature is reviewed, and the relationship between skin masses associated with true median cleft and the skin mass in our patient is discussed.  相似文献

The swelling of a dextran gel, Sephadex G-75, was observed in an aqueous environment at room temperature by a noninvasive technique that uses light microscopy coupled to an image analysis system via a video camera. The rate of swelling was found to follow the Tanaka and Fillmore theory, from which the overall gel diffusion coefficient was estimated as 6.3 x 10(-7) cm2/s. In addition to giving a quantitative measure of gel swelling that could be useful in the mechanical design of liquid chromatography columns, this approach provides data on wet particle size and particle size range, which is needed for the modeling of diffusional and mass transfer effects in size-exclusion chromatography. In this context, key observations are that the gel particles are nearly spherical with an elliptical shape factor of 0.98 (perfect sphere = 1) and that there is little difference between sizes of particles obtained in water, 50 mM Tris-glycine buffer (pH 10.2), and buffer containing 1 mg/mL protein. The diameter of the dry material ranged from 20 to 100 microns, while the hydrated particles had diameters of 40-350 microns. The rate of swelling is rapid, with 50% swelling occurring in about 10 s and swelling to 99% of the final wet particle size being obtained in less than 90 s.  相似文献

Mechanism of activation of liver glycogen synthase by swelling.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The mechanism linking the stimulation of liver glycogen synthesis to swelling induced either by amino acids or hypotonicity was studied in hepatocytes, in gel-filtered liver extracts, and in purified preparations of particulate glycogen to which glycogen-metabolizing enzymes are bound. High concentrations of KCl, but not of potassium glutamate, were found to inhibit glycogen synthesis in permeabilized hepatocytes. Similarly, physiological concentrations (30-50 mM) of Cl- ions were also found to inhibit synthase phosphatase in vitro, whereas 10-20 mM Cl- ions, a concentration found in swollen hepatocytes, did not inhibit synthase phosphatase. Synthase phosphatase activity was more sensitive to inhibition by Cl- ions at low (0.1%) than at high (1%) concentrations of glycogen. By contrast, 10 mM glutamate and aspartate, a concentration observed in hepatocytes incubated with glutamine or proline, stimulated synthase phosphatase in vitro. Therefore, it is proposed that the fall in intracellular Cl- concentration as well as the increase in intracellular glutamate and aspartate concentrations, that are observed in swollen hepatocytes in the presence of amino acids, are responsible, at least in part, for the stimulation of synthase phosphatase and, hence, of glycogen synthesis.  相似文献

Physiological studies strongly support the view that hydration control in the cornea is dependent on active ion transport at the corneal endothelium. However, the mechanism by which endothelial ion transport regulates corneal thickness has not been elaborated in detail. In this study, the corneal stroma is modeled as a triphasic material under steady-state conditions. An ion flux boundary condition is developed to represent active transport at the endothelium. The equations are solved in cylindrical coordinates for confined compression and in spherical coordinates to represent an intact cornea. The model provides a mechanism by which active ion transport at the endothelium regulates corneal hydration and provides a basis for explaining the origin of the "imbibition pressure" and stromal "swelling pressure." The model encapsulates the Donnan view of corneal swelling as well as the "pump-leak hypothesis."  相似文献

Exposure of isolated single-pass-perfused rat liver to hypo-osmotic media resulted in liver cell swelling and an inhibition of release of branched-chain amino acids. Similarly, cell swelling inhibited [3H]leucine release from perfused livers from rats in which liver proteins were prelabelled in vivo by intraperitoneal injection of L-[4,5-3H]leucine 16-20 h before the experiment. The effects of cell swelling on [3H]leucine release were fully reversible. [3H]Leucine release was also inhibited when cell swelling was induced by addition of glutamine (0.5-2 mM). There was a close relationship between the inhibition of [3H]leucine release and the degree of liver cell swelling, regardless of whether cell swelling was induced by hypo-osmotic perfusion or addition of glutamine. The data suggest that the known anti-proteolytic effect of glutamine is in large part due to glutamine-induced hepatocyte swelling.  相似文献

Upon osmotic swelling human epithelial cells exhibited significant increases in the membrane capacitance. Evidence for exocytosis includes its dependency on temperature, cytosolic Ca2+ and ATP as well as its sensitivity to guanosine 5'-O-(3-thio)triphosphate (GTP gamma S) and N-ethylmaleimide (NEM). A role of the osmotic exocytosis in the subsequent cell volume regulation is suggested.  相似文献
