Although it is well established that brown-headed cowbirds Molothrus ater are host generalists, the parasitism strategies of individual females are not well documented. Here we use microsatellite genotyping to characterize host use by individual female cowbirds. Of 205 offspring sampled at a site in northeastern Illinois during one breeding season, we identified or inferred 33 mothers of 141 offspring, with up to 13 (mean 4.72) offspring assigned to individual females. Most (83%) females were host generalists and parasitized up to five host species, indicating that community-wide patterns of parasitism do not result from different individuals specializing on different host species. However, some females (17%) parasitized a single species, suggesting that alternative host-use strategies may exist within a single population. For host generalist females, individuals often parasitized host species that differed in body mass, nest-site placement, and quality, indicating that female cowbirds exhibit extremely flexible host ranges. However, female cowbirds consistently discriminated among potential hosts, for example, by completely avoiding some common, but unsuitable species.  相似文献

Previous work has shown that captive female cowbirds, Molothrus ater, can influence the outcome of male song development by affecting retention or deletion of song elements and by stimulating improvization. Here we looked for evidence of female influence during the process of learning, as males progress from subsong to plastic song to stereotyped song. In a longitudinal study, we measured the rate and timing of vocal development in captive, juvenile male brown-headed cowbirds, M. a. artemisiae. Half the young males were housed with female cowbirds from their own population (South Dakota: SD) and half with female cowbirds from a M. a. ater population (Indiana: IN). Both populations of females prefer local songs and differ in the time of breeding, with SD females breeding 2 weeks later than IN females. The results showed significant effects of female presence on the age at which males advanced through stages of vocal development: the SD males with SD females, as opposed to SD males with IN females, developed stereotyped song earlier, reduced motor practise earlier, and produced more effective playback songs. Longitudinal observations of social interactions showed that the two groups of females reliably differed in social responses to males. Degree of social proximity of females to males in the winter predicted song maturity, rate of rehearsal and song potency. Receiver sensory abilities can be influenced by a number of factors, including habitat, phylogeny and the selective pressure to acquire information about conspecifics or heterospecifics. It has been hypothesized that brood-parasitic brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) females may locate or determine the quality of potential hosts by eavesdropping on their sexual signals. This is expected to produce different sex-specific pressures on the auditory system to detect conspecific and heterospecific acoustic signals. Here, we examined auditory filter shape and efficiency, which influence the ability to resolve spectral and temporal information, in males and females at center frequencies of 2, 3 and 4 kHz. We found that overall, cowbirds had relatively wide filters (lsmean ± SE: 619.8 ± 41.6 Hz). Moreover, females had narrower filters (females: 491.4 ± 66.8, males: 713.8 ± 67.3 Hz) and greater filter efficiency (females: 59.0 ± 2.0, males: 69.8 ± 1.9 dB) than males. Our results suggest that the filters of female cowbirds may allow them to extract spectral information from heterospecific vocalizations. The broader auditory filters of males may reflect limited spectral energy in conspecific vocalizations in this frequency range, and hence, weaker selection for high resolution of frequency in the range of 2–4 kHz.  相似文献

In most animal species, males are predicted to compete for reproductive opportunities, while females are expected to choose between potential mates. However, when males' rate of reproduction is constrained, or females vary widely in 'quality', male mate choice is also predicted to occur. Such conditions exist in the promiscuous mating system of feral Soay sheep on St Kilda, Scotland, where a highly synchronized mating season, intense sperm competition and limitations on sperm production constrain males' potential reproductive rate, and females vary substantially in their ability to produce successful offspring. We show that, consistent with predictions, competitive rams focus their mating activity and siring success towards heavier females with higher inclusive fitness. To our knowledge, this is the first time that male mate choice has been identified and shown to lead to assortative patterns of parentage in a natural mammalian system, and occurs despite fierce male-male competition for mates. An additional consequence of assortative mating in this population is that lighter females experience a series of unstable consorts with less adept rams, and hence are mated by a greater number of males during their oestrus. We have thus also identified a novel male-driven mechanism that generates variation in female promiscuity, which suggests that the high levels of female promiscuity in this system are not part of an adaptive female tactic to intensify post-copulatory competition between males.  相似文献

We investigated effects of naturally occurring variation inexperience with adult males on development of song and courtshipcompetence in captive juvenile cowbirds. We studied birds ingroups housed in large outdoor aviaries that allowed birdsto regulate access to social stimulation. In two aviaries, we housed juvenile males and females either with or withoutadult males. Birds remained in these conditions from September1999 through their breeding season. We documented social andvocal development of juvenile males in the two aviaries bymeasuring social assortment and patterns and frequencies of their song interactions. We then brought the juveniles fromthe two aviaries together to compete against each other foraccess to females. In addition, we recorded juveniles' songsfour times over the study and played back their breeding seasonsongs to females in sound-attenuating chambers to measure the effectiveness of songs in eliciting copulatory responses fromthe females. Compared to juvenile males housed with adult males,juvenile males housed without adult males developed atypicalbehavior patterns. They (1) displayed little intrasexual aggressionor near-neighbor associations and (2) exhibited different patternsof courtship and copulation, but (3) were as successful at competing for copulations. Furthermore, they developed stereotypedsongs sooner and developed more potent breeding season songs.These different outcomes could not be traced to one variablebut to a cascade of effects involving diverging patterns ofsong acquisition and social interaction. The patterns of socialskills that emerged indicate considerable plasticity in the mechanisms underlying acquisition of courtship competence.  相似文献

Nestling parasites typically beg more intensively than do host nestlings yet these exaggerated displays are also honest in that they are modulated by hunger and age. We hypothesized that honesty was also maintained in the food solicitation behaviors of fledgling brood parasites because the benefits and costs of their begging displays are similar to those of nestling parasites. Begging displays of hand-reared 14–32 days old brown-headed cowbirds Molothrus ater that had experimentally manipulated nutritional needs were recorded to analyze variation in the peak frequency, duration, and rate of fledglings' begging bouts. Peak frequency of bouts decreased with greater age and was lower for females. Bout rate was greater with increasing hunger levels of fledgling parasites but did not vary with age. Consistent and predictable variation of acoustic begging displays with age, sex, and hunger-level indicates honesty in host-parasite communication systems through conveying truthful information about the many possible needs of parasitic fledglings.  相似文献

In mating systems with social monogamy and obligatory bi-parental care, such as found in many songbird species, male and female fitness depends on the combined parental investment. Hence, both sexes should gain from choosing mates in high rather than low condition. However, theory also predicts that an individual's phenotypic quality can constrain choice, if low condition individuals cannot afford prolonged search efforts and/or face higher risk of rejection. In systems with mutual mate choice, the interaction between male and female condition should thus be a better predictor of choice than either factor in isolation. To address this prediction experimentally, we manipulated male and female condition and subsequently tested male and female mating preferences in zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata, a songbird species with mutual mate choice and obligatory bi-parental care. We experimentally altered phenotypic quality by manipulating the brood size in which the birds were reared. Patterns of association for high- or low-condition individuals of the opposite sex differed for male and female focal birds when tested in an 8-way choice arena. Females showed repeatable condition-assortative preferences for males matching their own rearing background. Male preferences were also repeatable, but not predicted by their own or females' rearing background. In combination with a brief review of the literature on condition-dependent mate choice in the zebra finch we discuss whether the observed sex differences and between-studies differences arise because males and females differ in context sensitivity (e.g. male-male competition suppressing male mating preferences), sampling strategies or susceptibility to rearing conditions (e.g. sex-specific effect on physiology). While a picture emerges that juvenile and current state indeed affect preferences, the development and context-dependency of mutual state-dependent mate choice warrants further study.  相似文献

In brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater, as in many songbird species, vocalizations are fundamental to reproduction. In our studies, experiments utilizing different social housing regimes and geographic comparisons have indicated the social learning of males' vocalizations and associated abilities to use vocalizations effectively during the breeding season. Here, we describe studies indicating roles of cultural and genetic background, and of social influences from females, on male vocal development. These influences can interact with neural regions, including song learning and song control nuclei, but also visual-processing nuclei, in the development of signaling. We argue that a developmental systems approach to the study of vocal behavior provides a structure to organize these different influences and how they may interact with one another over development. A systems approach requires that researchers study the social context in which signals and signalers develop - both the ontogenetic arena in which young animals learn their signals from older animals, and the functional arena in which young and older animals socially interact with one another.  相似文献

Ecological and behavioural data suggest that female brood parasitic brown-headed cowbirds Molothrus ater are host generalists; this predicts that there should be no genetically differentiated host races within cowbird populations. We tested this hypothesis by comparing differentiation in two rapidly evolving DNA markers (mtDNA control region sequence and nuclear DNA microsatellite loci) among unrelated cowbird chicks raised by two ecologically distinct hosts. No differentiation was observed in either marker supporting the absence of host race hypothesis.  相似文献

Female mate choice can be hypothesised in most nocturnal primates, since females show a higher investment in their offspring than males. The aim of this experimental study was to investigate if female grey mouse lemurs perform mate choice and whether age, relatedness (to the male), or male advertisement call activity systematically influence their decisions. A two-way mate choice design was developed in which females could choose between two males. Mate choice was deduced from the time spent in proximity to the males and from mating behaviour. During oestrus 12 of 17 females participated actively in the experiment and all of them showed either a significant spatial (n=11) or behavioural (n=1) preference for one male. In four cases copulations were observed. The influence of age on female mate choice was not statistically significant. In the cases with copulations, however, females mostly preferred the older male. This might indicate a preference for older age as an indicator of experience, fitness, and/or status. The influence of relatedness on female mate choice could not be definitely clarified. However, results imply a mechanism of kin recognition on the basis of familiarity. In the majority of choices, females preferred the male with higher trill call activity. Since trill call activity correlates with the relative dominance status of males, these results suggest an importance of the male dominance status for female mate choice in grey mouse lemurs. Altogether our findings indicate that females use a complex of different cues to choose their mates.  相似文献

Recent experimental work on guppies (Poecilia reticulata) hasexamined the strength of genetic and cultural (copying) factorsin determining female mate choice. Using females from a populationwith a heritable preference for the amount of orange body colorpossessed by males, prior work discovered that a threshold differencein orange color among males existed below which females wouldchoose a less orange male if they observed another female choosethat male, but above which they consistently preferred the moreorange of the males, regardless of whether they viewed anotherfemale prefer the less orange male. I tested whether this thresholdcan be shifted by increasing the amount of mate-copying informationavailable to a female. I demonstrate that when a female hasthe opportunity to see two different model females independentlyprefer the less orange of two males or a single female neara drab male for a longer period of time (twice as long as inprior work), the observer female prefers this drab male evenwhen males dramatically differ in orange coloration.  相似文献

Female songbirds are thought to assess males based on aspectsof song, such as repertoire size or amount of singing, thatcould potentially provide information about male quality. Arelatively unexplored aspect of song that also might serve asan assessment signal is a male's ability to perform physicallychallenging songs. Trilled songs, such as those produced byswamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana), present males with a performancechallenge because trills require rapid and precise coordinationof vocal tract movements, resulting in a trade-off between trillrate and frequency bandwidth. This trade-off defines a constrainton song production observed as a triangular distribution inacoustic space of trill rate by frequency bandwidth, with anupper boundary that represents a performance limit. Given thisbackground on song production constraints, we are able to identifya priori which songs are performed with a higher degree of proficiencyand, thus, which songs should be more attractive to females.We determined the performance limit for a population of swampsparrows and measured how well individual males performed songsrelative to this limit ("vocal performance"). We then comparedfemale solicitation responses to high-performance versus low-performanceversions of the same song type produced by different males.Females displayed significantly more to high-performance songsthan to low-performance songs, supporting the hypothesis thatfemales use vocal performance to assess males.  相似文献

Females must evaluate male quality to perform mate choice. Since females generally base their selection on different male features, individual females may differ in their choice. In this study, we show that concordance between females in mate choice decisions may arise without any experimental maximization of a particular attractive trait. Choice tests were performed in mound-building mice, Mus spicilegus, a monogamous species. Body odours of two male donors were presented to 12 female subjects individually. To determine female choice, the same pair of males was presented three times to a female. Four different pairs of male body odours were used. Male donors, not related to females, were selected at random in our polymorphic breeding stock. Using this two-way choice design, female mice displayed a clear choice and had a similar preference for particular males.  相似文献

The evolution of a positive genetic correlation between male and female components of mate recognition systems will result as a consequence of assortative mating and, in particular, is central to a number of theories of sexual selection. Although the existence of such genetic correlations has been investigated in a number of taxa, it has yet to be shown that such correlations evolve and whether they may evolve as rapidly as suggested by sexual selection models. In this study, I used a hybridization experiment to disrupt natural mate recognition systems and then observed the subsequent evolutionary dynamics of the genetic correlation between male and female components for 56 generations in hybrids between Drosophila serrata and Drosophila birchii. The genetic correlation between male and female components evolved from 0.388 at generation 5 to 1.017 at generation 37 and then declined to -0.040 after a further 19 generations. These results indicated that the genetic basis of the mate recognition system in the hybrid populations evolved rapidly. The initial rapid increase in the genetic correlation was consistent with the classic assumption that male and female components will coevolve under sexual selection. The subsequent decline in genetic correlation may be attributable to the fixation of major genes, or, alternatively, may be a result of a cyclic evolutionary change in mate recognition.  相似文献

Learning in the context of mate choice can influence sexualselection and speciation. Relatively little work, however, hasbeen conducted on the role of learning in the context of matechoice, and this topic has been mostly ignored in insects eventhough insects have served as a prime model system in researchon sexual selection and incipient speciation. Extending recentwork indicating apparently adaptive learning in the contextof sexual behavior by male fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster),I tested for the effect of learning on mate choice by femalefruit flies. Compared to young virgin females that experiencedcourtship by large males, young virgin females that experiencedcourtship by small males were more likely to mate with smalland large males in a test conducted a day after the experiencephase. These results, which are the first clear empirical demonstrationof learning in the context of mate choice by female insects,lay the foundation for research on the role of learning in insectsexual selection and speciation.  相似文献

Aspects of sexual selection were studied in a sexually monomorphic Australian agamid lizard (Ctenophorus fordi), in particular with respect to the sensory exploitation hypothesis. In enclosure trials, females were offered the choice between large vs. small males and, in a different experiment, males with blue vs. normal head color. The rationale for these experiments was: firstly, to establish if females actively solicit copulations; secondly, if so, do females solicit copulations non-randomly with respect to male size (because large males may have access to food resources); thirdly, if male coloration is manipulated to match traits of congeneric, conspicuous and sexually dimorphic species, do females show preference for this novel trait (in accordance with the sensory exploitation hypothesis). The corresponding manipulations were also made in a free-living population where the distribution of females on the home ranges of color-manipulated males were monitored. Blue-headed males were accepted as mating partners both in the staged mating trials and in the natural population. Females appeared not to express any kind of active or passive mate choice (rejection); in only one out of 62 trials did a female approach a male herself rather than being approached by the male(s). There was no discrimination against any male category regardless of size or color within a female's receptive period and the manipulation of male head color in the natural population did not result in spatial re-distribution of females. Thus, a female appears to mate unselectively within her receptive period. Rejection behaviors were used only outside of the receptive period to communicate, to all males, that the female is not receptive.  相似文献

A large, partly pedunculated mass on the scapular area of a wild-caught captive Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) consisted of a multiloculated keratin cyst inhabited by a new species of harpirhynchid mite (Harpirhynchus quasimodo). The mass did not interfere with flight or behavior. This is the first record of such an infestation of cowbirds in Florida.  相似文献
