The metabolic response to two different forms of high-intensity intermittent cycle exercise was investigated in young women. Subjects (8 trained and 8 untrained) performed two bouts of high-intensity intermittent exercise: short sprint (SS) (8-s sprint, 12-s recovery) and long sprint (LS) (24-s sprint, 36-s recovery) for 20 min on two separate occasions. Both workload and oxygen uptake were greater in the trained subjects but were not significantly different for SS and LS. Plasma glycerol concentrations significantly increased during exercise. Lactate concentrations rose over the 20 min and were higher for the trained women. Catecholamine concentration was also higher postexercise compared with preexercise for both groups. Both SS and LS produced similar metabolic response although both lactate and catecholamines were higher after the 24-s sprint. In conclusion, these results show that high-intensity intermittent exercise resulted in significant elevations in catecholamines that appear to be related to increased venous glycerol concentrations. The trained compared with the untrained women tended to show an earlier increase in plasma glycerol concentrations during high-intensity exercise.  相似文献

beta-Endorphin (beta-EP), adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), and cortisol plasma concentrations were examined before and after maximal exercise at four intensities [36, 55, 73, and 100% of maximal leg power (MLP)] by means of a computerized cycle ergometer. All intensities were greater than those eliciting peak O2 uptake for the individual subjects. Blood samples were collected at rest, immediately after exercise, and at 5 and 15 min postexercise. Significant (P less than 0.05) increases were observed at 36% MLP for beta-EP and ACTH immediately after exercise and at 5 and 15 min postexercise. Plasma cortisol increased at 36% MLP at 15 min postexercise. Blood lactate significantly increased at all postexercise collection points for exercise intensities of 36, 55, and 73% MLP and at 5 min postexercise for 100% MLP. beta-EP concentrations at 36% MLP were significantly correlated (r = 0.75) with capillary density (mm-2), and cortisol concentrations at 36% MLP were significantly correlated (r = 0.89) with percentage of type II muscle fibers. No other significant relationships were observed. These data show that brief, high-intensity exercise up to maximal power production results in a nonlinear response pattern in peripheral blood hormone concentrations. Furthermore, blood lactate levels do not appear to be related to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal hormone plasma concentrations at high exercise intensities.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Gosselin, LE, Kozlowski, KF, DeVinney-Boymel, L, and Hambridge, C. Metabolic response of different high-intensity aerobic interval exercise protocols. J Strength Cond Res 26(10): 2866-2871, 2012-Although high-intensity sprint interval training (SIT) employing the Wingate protocol results in significant physiological adaptations, it is conducted at supramaximal intensity and is potentially unsafe for sedentary middle-aged adults. We therefore evaluated the metabolic and cardiovascular response in healthy young individuals performing 4 high-intensity (~90% V[Combining Dot Above]O2max) aerobic interval training (HIT) protocols with similar total work output but different work-to-rest ratio. Eight young physically active subjects participated in 5 different bouts of exercise over a 3-week period. Protocol 1 consisted of 20-minute continuous exercise at approximately 70% of V[Combining Dot Above]O2max, whereas protocols 2-5 were interval based with a work-active rest duration (in seconds) of 30/30, 60/30, 90/30, and 60/60, respectively. Each interval protocol resulted in approximately 10 minutes of exercise at a workload corresponding to approximately 90% V[Combining Dot Above]O2max, but differed in the total rest duration. The 90/30 HIT protocol resulted in the highest V[Combining Dot Above]O2, HR, rating of perceived exertion, and blood lactate, whereas the 30/30 protocol resulted in the lowest of these parameters. The total caloric energy expenditure was lowest in the 90/30 and 60/30 protocols (~150 kcal), whereas the other 3 protocols did not differ (~195 kcal) from one another. The immediate postexercise blood pressure response was similar across all the protocols. These finding indicate that HIT performed at approximately 90% of V[Combining Dot Above]O2max is no more physiologically taxing than is steady-state exercise conducted at 70% V[Combining Dot Above]O2max, but the response during HIT is influenced by the work-to-rest ratio. This interval protocol may be used as an alternative approach to steady-state exercise training but with less time commitment.  相似文献

This study comprised 2 main experiments: one was to determine the oxidative DNA damage under hyperbaric hyperoxia (HBO), and the other was to evaluate the effects of pre-exposure to HBO on high-intensity exercise performance. Healthy subjects (n = 8) inspired 100% O2 in an experimental chamber at a pressure of 1.3 atmospheres absolute (ATA) for 50 minutes once per week for 2 weeks. Urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was measured as a marker of DNA oxidative damage on day 0 and on days 1, 3, and 5 after each HBO exposure. To investigate the effects of pre-exposure to HBO on high-intensity exercise performance, subjects (n = 6) performed maximal isometric knee extensor exercise (30 repetitions x 2 sets) with and without HBO pre-exposure (100% O2 at 1.3 ATA for 50 minutes). Urinary 8-OHdG did not show any significant change after HBO exposure. Isometric knee extensor torque was significantly lower during the first half of the first set of exercises after HBO pre-exposure compared with the normobaric normoxia (NBO) trial. The decreased torque was associated with the lower integrated electromyography with respect to time. Changes in the degree of ischemia-reperfusion in the vastus lateralis muscle during exercise were larger in the HBO pre-exposure trial than in the NBO trial. Muscle fatigue index, serum lactate concentration, heart rate, and systolic blood pressure showed no differences between the 2 trials. These results indicated that HBO exposure was harmless to DNA, and HBO pre-exposure did not enhance high-intensity exercise performance. As a practical application, athletes who require maximal muscle strength should not inspire high-concentration of O2 just before their competitions because it might, as the case may be, impair their performance.  相似文献

The tolerable work duration (t) for high-intensity cycling is well described as a hyperbolic function of power (W): W = (W'.t-1) + Wa, where Wa is the upper limit for sustainable power (lying between maximum W and the threshold for sustained blood [lactate] increase, theta lac), and W' is a constant which defines the amount of work which can be performed greater than Wa. As training increases the tolerable duration of high-intensity cycling, we explored whether this reflected an alteration of Wa, W' or both. Before and after a 7-week regimen of intense interval cycle-training by healthy males, we estimated ( ) theta lac and determined maximum O2 uptake (mu VO2); Wa; W'; and the temporal profiles of pulmonary gas exchange, blood gas, acid-base and metabolic response to constant-load cycling at and above Wa. Although training increased theta lac (24%), mu VO2 (15%) and Wa (15%), W' was unaffected. For exercise at Wa, a steady state was attained for VO2, [lactate] and pH both pre- and post-training, despite blood [norepinephrine] and [epinephrine] ([NE], [E]) and rectal temperature continuing to rise. For exercise greater than Wa, there was a progressive increase in VO2 (resulting in mu VO2 at fatigue), [lactate], [NE], [E] and rectal temperature, and a progressive decrease for pH. We conclude that the increased endurance capacity for high-intensity exercise following training reflects an increased W asymptote of the W-t relationship with no effect on its curvature; consequently, there is no appreciable change in the amount of work which can be performed above Wa.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A recent bout of high-intensity exercise can alter the balance of aerobic and anaerobic energy provision during subsequent exercise above the lactate threshold (theta(L)). However, it remains uncertain whether such "priming" influences the tolerable duration of subsequent exercise through changes in the parameters of aerobic function [e.g., theta(L), maximum oxygen uptake (Vo(2max))] and/or the hyperbolic power-duration (P-t) relationship [critical power (CP) and the curvature constant (W')]. We therefore studied six men performing cycle ergometry to the limit of tolerance; gas exchange was measured breath-by-breath and arterialized capillary blood [lactate] was measured at designated intervals. On different days, each subject completed 1) an incremental test (15 W/min) for estimation of theta(L) and measurement of the functional gain (DeltaVo(2)/DeltaWR) and Vo(2peak) and 2) four constant-load tests at different work rates (WR) for estimation of CP, W', and Vo(2max). All tests were subsequently repeated with a preceding 6-min supra-CP priming bout and an intervening 2-min 20-W recovery. The hyperbolicity of the P-t relationship was retained postpriming, with no significant difference in CP (241 +/- 39 vs. 242 +/- 36 W, post- vs. prepriming), Vo(2max) (3.97 +/- 0.34 vs. 3.93 +/- 0.38 l/min), DeltaVo(2)/DeltaWR (10.7 +/- 0.3 vs. 11.1 +/- 0.4 ml.min(-1).W(-1)), or the fundamental Vo(2) time constant (25.6 +/- 3.5 vs. 28.3 +/- 5.4 s). W' (10.61 +/- 2.07 vs. 16.13 +/- 2.33 kJ) and the tolerable duration of supra-CP exercise (-33 +/- 11%) were each significantly reduced, despite a less-prominent Vo(2) slow component. These results suggest that, following supra-CP priming, there is either a reduced depletable energy resource or a residual fatigue-metabolite level that leads to the tolerable limit before this resource is fully depleted.  相似文献

We examined the effects of liquid carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation on markers of anabolism following high-intensity resistance exercise. Nine resistance-trained men consumed either CHO or placebo (PLC) 10 minutes before and immediately following 2 resistance exercise sessions. Cortisol (CORT), insulin (INS), ammonia (AMM), and glucose (GLU) were measured before, immediately after, and 1.5 and 4 hours after exercise. Urinary nitrogen (NH(+3)) was measured 24 hours before and after exercise. There was a significant difference in INS levels immediately after exercise and 1.5 hours after exercise. No significant differences were observed for CORT, AMM, GLU, or NH(+3)between treatments. Significant within-group differences were found for the PLC group: CORT before compared with immediately after exercise; INS before compared with immediately after exercise and before compared with 1.5 hours after exercise; and AMM before compared with immediately after exercise and before compared with 1.5 hours after exercise. Significant within-group differences were found for the CHO group: CORT immediately after compared with 1.5 hours after exercise and immediately after compared with 4 hours after exercise; INS before compared with 1.5 hours after exercise; and AMM before compared with immediately after exercise. Liquid CHO ingestion leads to a more favorable anabolic environment immediately following a resistance exercise bout; however, our indirect measures of protein degradation were not altered by CHO ingestion.  相似文献

We studied the effects of ingesting either a snack food (S) (260 kcal) or placebo (P) 30 min before intermittent cycle exercise at 70% maximal O2 consumption on endurance performance and muscle glycogen depletion in eight healthy human males. Immediately before exercise there were significantly greater increases in plasma glucose (PG) (S +28 +/- 9.7; P +0.1 +/- 0.8 mg/dl) and insulin (S +219 +/- 61.5; P -7 +/- 5.5 pmol/l) (P less than 0.05) following S feeding compared with P. These differences were no longer present by the end of the first exercise period. There were no differences in endurance times (S 52 +/- 6.4; P 48 +/- 5.6 min) or in the extent of muscle glycogen depletion following exercise (S 56 +/- 14.7; P 50 +/- 15.5 micrograms/mg protein) between the two groups. PG was maintained at base-line (prefeeding) concentrations following S, whereas there was a tendency for PG to steadily decrease after P. Total grams of carbohydrate oxidized during exercise did not differ between the two groups (S 120; P 118 g). These results demonstrate that the ingestion of a mixed-macronutrient snack 30 min before exercise does not impair endurance performance nor increase the extent of muscle glycogen depletion during high-intensity cycle exercise in untrained adult male subjects.  相似文献

Intestinal absorption was measured in six trained male cyclists during rest, exercise, and recovery periods with the segmental perfusion technique. Each subject passed a multilumen tube into the duodenojejunum. The experiments consisted of 1) a sequence of 1-h bouts of cycling exercise at 30, 50, and 70% maximal O2 uptake (Vo2max) separated by 1-h rest periods or 2) a 90-min bout at 70% VO2max. The cycling was performed on a constant-load Velodyne trainer. Absorption of water and a 6% carbohydrate-electrolyte (2% glucose, 6% sucrose, 20 meq Na+, 2.6 meq K+) solution (both perfused at 15 ml/min) were compared. The effects of perfusing an isotonic electrolyte solution during mild (30% VO2max) exercise were also studied. Fluid was sampled every 10 min from ports 10 and 50 cm distal to the infusion site. Water flux was determined by differences in polyethylene glycol concentration across the 40-cm test segment. Results showed 1) no difference in water or electrolyte absorption rates among rest, exercise, and recovery periods; 2) no difference in absorption rates among the three exercise intensities or different exercise durations; and 3) significantly greater fluid absorption rates from the carbohydrate-electrolyte (CE) solution than from water. Water flux during rest, exercise, and recovery was about sixfold greater from the CE solution than from the isotonic solution without carbohydrate. We conclude that 1) exercise has no effect on water or solute absorption in the duodenojejunum, 2) fluid absorption occurs significantly faster from a CE solution than from water, and 3) fluid absorption is increased sixfold by addition of carbohydrate to an electrolyte solution.  相似文献

To investigate the effects of the menstrual cycle and of exercise intensity on the relationship between finger blood flow (FBF) and esophageal temperature (Tes), we studied four women, aged 20-32 years. Subjects exercised at 40% and 70% VO2max in the semi-supine posture at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees C. Resting Tes was higher during the luteal phase than the follicular phase (P less than 0.01). There were no significant differences between the two phases in FBF, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, heart rate or minute ventilation at rest and during exercise, respectively. Each regression line of the FBF-Tes relationship consists of two distinct segments of FBF change to Tes (slope 1 and 2). FBF increased at a threshold Tes for vasodilation ([Tes 0]) and the rate of FBF rise became greater at ([Tes 0]) and the rate of FBF rise became greater at another Tes above this threshold ([Tes 0']). For both levels of exercise, [Tes 0] and [Tes 0'] were shifted upward during the luteal phase, but the slopes of the FBF-Tes relationship were almost the same in the two phases of the menstrual cycle. Increasing exercise intensity induced a significant decrease in slope 1 of the FBF-Tes relationship during the follicular (P less than 0.01) and the luteal phases (P less than 0.02), respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The intrinsic relationship between ventilation (VE) and carbon dioxide output (VCO2) is described by the modified alveolar ventilation equation VE = VCO2 k/PaCO2(1-VD/VT) where PaCO2 is the partial pressure of CO2 in the arterial blood and VD/VT is the dead space fraction of the tidal volume. Previous investigators have reported that high-intensity exercise uncouples VE from VCO2; however, they did not measure the PaCO2 and VD/VT components of the overall relationship. In an attempt to provide a more complete analysis of the effects of high-intensity exercise on the VE-VCO2 relationship, we undertook an investigation where five subjects volunteered to perform three steady-state tests (SS1, SS2, SS3) at 60 W. One week after SS1 each subject was required to perform repeated 1-min bouts of exercise corresponding to a work rate of approximately 140% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Two and 24 h later the subjects performed SS2 and SS3, respectively. This exercise intervention caused PaCO2 during SS2 and SS3 to be regulated (P less than 0.01) approximately 4 Torr below the control (SS1) value of 38.8 Torr. Additionally, significant alterations were noted for VCO2 with corresponding values of 1.15 (SS1), 1.10 (SS2), and 1.04 (SS3) l/min. No changes were noted in either VD/VT or VE. In summary, it seems reasonable to suggest that the disproportionate increase in VE with respect to VCO2 noted in earlier work does not reflect an uncoupling. Rather the slope of the VE-VCO2 relationship is increased in a predictable manner as described by the modified alveolar ventilation equation.  相似文献

We studied the effects of high-intensity exercise (70-75% of VO2 max) combined with high-decibel music (100 dB) on cognitive function (measured by the Stroop test) and related blood flow changes to the prefrontal cortex (measured by Oxy-hemoglobin (Hb), Deoxy-Hb, tissue oxygen index (TOI), and normalized tissue hemoglobin index (nTHI)). The subjects of the study were 28 healthy female university students in their early 20s. Subjects were categorized into control group (CG), music group (MG), exercise group (Ex), and music and exercise group (MnEx). A crossover design was implemented so that all subjects participated in all test groups. We found no significant difference in reaction time between CG and MG for the neutral and incongruent tasks of Stroop test. However, there were significant improvements in the neutral and incongruent tasks for both the Ex (p < 0.01) and MnEx (p < 0.01) groups. Oxy-Hb measurements in the prefrontal cortex of the brain supported the Stroop test data. We found no difference between Ex and MnEx in the TOI; however, there was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in MnEx compared to Ex. In addition, Ex resulted in a significant increase (p < 0.05) in nTHI as compared to CG. These results indicate that high decibel music could negatively affect prefrontal cortex activation of the brain during exercise.  相似文献
