Caninae is one of the most studied mammalian groups, nevertheless there are relatively few comparative studies on their neuroanatomy. This work contributes to a better knowledge of this subfamily, since it describes the external cerebrum anatomy of 29 out of the 35 living Caninae species, 11 of which are described for the first time. Information about their frontal region appears to be a welcome supplement to the study of the phylogeny. Two distinctive features are recognized, that can be traced back in the fossil record: the sulcal pattern medial to the coronal sulci, and the shape and relative size of the proreal gyrus. Four types are described for the first feature: (1) orthogonal: Canis, Lycaon, Cuon, Atelocynus, Speothos , (2) pentagonal: Vulpes, Alopex, Otocyon, † Eucyon , (3) parenthesis-like: † Dusicyon, Pseudalopex, Chrysocyon , (4) heart-shaped: Urocyon, Cerdocyon, Pseudalopex culpaeus, Nyctereutes . Three types are described for the second feature: (1) elongated and bilaterally compressed: Canis, Cuon, Lycaon, Atelocynus, Speothos, Cerdocyon, † Dusicyon, Chrysocyon, Pseudalopex , † Nyctereutes sinensis , † N. tingi , (2) small: Vulpes, Otocyon, Urocyon, Alopex , (3) wide and low: Nyctereutes procyonoides. On the basis of these features some phylogenetic interpretations are presented: the fossil Asian Nyctereutes is close to Cerdocyon, Speothos is close to Atelocynus , Chrysocyon is not related to Canis , Urocyon differs from Vulpes and Pseudalopex culpaeus differs from the rest of the Pseudalopex species.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. In the Canidae family, cases of infanticide have been recorded in populations of dingoes, wolves and red foxes. The consumption of individuals from the same species has not been recorded yet for the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), a medium-sized South American canid with generalist eating habits; however, in a semi-arid region in north-eastern Brazil, two C. thous faecal samples were found in August and October 2018 with fur and fragments of paws from young individuals of this species. Cases of offspring consumption have also been reported in other carnivore species from semi-arid regions, and it is a phenomenon that might be related to the scarcity of resources and a mechanism for obtaining food. Competition for resources is also hypothesized to explain these natural events in nature, as the death of a pup results in greater access to resources for the parent and its offspring. Thus, infanticide can increase the chances of survival of the mother or the other pups.  相似文献

The vocalizations of the bush dog (Speothos venaticus), crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), and maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) were studied in a captive setting. The three species' repertoires were similar and included whines, long-distance calls, and growls. The whines and growls varied in amplitude, duration, and repetition rate; these variations and the frequencies of occurrence probably were influenced by both social organization and habitat characteristics. The bush dog, which lives in family groups and inhabits rain forests, had an elaborate whine-scream continuum that at close distances conveyed a wide range of moods. On the other hand, the maned wolf, which is solitary and frequents open pampas, used amplitude variations of the growl to signal hostile intentions over short, medium, and long distances.The long-distance vocalizations of the three species were the least variable in structure; the bush dog and crab-eating fox used the call to promote contact with separated pairmates or family members. Based on recordings during development, these two calls appeared to arise from the repetitive whine, a variant of the basic whine syllable. The maned wolf also had a contact-promoting howl, apparently an extended whine of high amplitude, but it was rarely recorded during the present study. More prominent was the maned wolf roar-bark, which functioned to space individuals over large distances, and appeared to be a growl of high amplitude.  相似文献

The ecology and reproductive biology of the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) and the pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus) were studied in Itapuã State Park, an Atlantic Forest fragment. In this study we describe their activity patterns (diel, lunar, and seasonal), reproductive period, density, spatial distribution, and habitat overlap. The crab-eating fox was more abundant than the pampas fox, occurring in all types of habitats and overlapping with the pampas fox only in the southern portion of the study area, covered by open vegetation. Both canid species presented nocturnal habits and C. thous showed no significant differences in activity among lunar phases or else year season. The density of C. thous was estimated to be 0.78 ind/km2. The crab-eating fox reproduced once a year, generating pups during spring (October to December). In comparison with C. thous populations from lower-latitude regions the relatively low density and one reproductive event per year that we observed are probably related to a colder climate, shorter photoperiod, and shortage of food resources in the winter, characteristic of southern Brazil.  相似文献

The Giemsa banding patterns of seven canid species, including the grey wolf (Canis lupus), the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), the bush dog (Speothos venaticus), the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), the grey fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), the bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis), and the fennec (Fennecus zerda), are presented and compared. Relative to other members of Canidae, these species have high diploid complements (2n greater than 64) consisting of largely acrocentric chromosomes. They show a considerable degree of chromosome homoeology, but relative to the grey wolf, each species is either missing chromosomes or has unique chromosomal additions and rearrangements. Differences in chromosome morphology among the seven species were used to reconstruct their phylogenetic history. The results suggest that the South American canids are closely related to each other and are derived from a wolf-like progenitor. The fennec and the bat-eared fox seem to be recent derivatives of a lineage that branched early from the wolf-like canids and which also includes the grey fox.  相似文献

Data on the spatial structure of an Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus beringensis) colony were obtained in July-August 1995, using walk counts and observations near living dens around the Northern rookery of the northern fur seals located on Bering Island (Commander Islands). The home ranges of 31 Arctic fox families (61 adults and 145 pups inhabiting 66 dens) were found over 27 km of the coastline. Sixty individuals (3 adults and 57 pups) were marked by color ear-tags. Among adult foxes, 24 (39.3%) were recognized as females and 12 (19.7%) as males; the sex of 25 (41.0%) foxes was not recognized. Among 57 marked cubs, 26 (45.6%) were females and 31 (54.4%) were males. The best studied families (13) had 3–11 pups (6.7 ± 0.7, on average). The survival of cubs at an age younger than 2.0–2.5 months was 82.5%; 30.8% of the families consisted of more than two adults. The distribution of the Arctic fox dens and home ranges along the coastline has been studied; specific features of the location of dens have been described. In the studied area, Arctic foxes have been foraging on birds (67.6% of dens with food remains), northern fur seals (40.5), other marine mammals (13.5), Pacific salmon (29.7), and reindeer (2.7%), as well as on amphipods and voles. Rich constant food sources (rookeries, marine bird colonies, and spawning places of the blueback salmon) were found in 7 home ranges of the Arctic fox; 6 home ranges included temporary food sources (spawning streams of the humpback salmon); and 18 home ranges were poor in food resources. Arctic foxes whose home ranges lie within 6–7 km around a “food patch” used the concentrated food resources together. Food resources are supposed to become important only after the raised pups turn to self-feeding. Differences in the use of space, foraging and breeding of the two Arctic fox subspecies (A. l. beringensis and A. l. semenovi), and arrangement of colonies around the northern fur seal rookeries are discussed.  相似文献

A female animal appears to approach an upper limit to the rate of sustained energy intake/metabolic rate (SusEI/MR) during lactation. However, different species of animals may respond differently to the sustainable limit. Here, we measured energy budget during lactation in female striped hamsters raising litters of natural size (Con), and females whose litter size was manipulated during early lactation to support fewer or more pups (minus pups, MP or plus pups, PP). The striped hamsters significantly decreased their body mass and increased food intake from early to late lactation; and MP females had lower weight loss and food intake than the control and PP females. Litter size of the PP group decreased significantly over the period of lactation, and pups were weaned at a similar weight to that of the controls. MP females supported a significantly lower litter mass throughout lactation compared with the control and PP females, but during late lactation the pups from the MP group were significantly heavier. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) did not differ significantly between the three groups and the gross energy intake during peak lactation was 5.0×, 4.2× and 5.0 × RMR for the control, MP and PP females, respectively. Female striped hamsters reached a plateau in food intake at around 14 g/d during peak lactation, which might signify a limit of SusEI at 5.0 × RMR. However, it was not possible to determine whether the limitation on SusEI was imposed centrally by the capacity of the gastrointestinal tract to process food, peripherally by the capacity of the mammary gland to produce milk, or by the capacity of animals to dissipate heat.  相似文献

The role of pups' appetite in the regulation of maternal consummatory behavior (food intake of nursing mothers), lactational performance and postpartum diestrus was studied over a period of 45 days postpartum in rats chronically exposed to either underfed or normally fed pups. Experimental rats (n = 10) daily received 5 pups, 4-10-days-old, that had been deprived of food for the preceding 24 h while under the care of nonlactating foster mothers. Control rats (n = 10) received normally fed pups obtained daily from lactating foster mothers. Throughout the experimental period, the daily milk yield (estimated by litter weight gain), the intake of food and water by the mother, as well as the ratio of litter weight gain to mother's intake of food and water were all markedly higher in rats nursing underfed pups than in rats nursing normally fed pups. After a peak in lactation around Day 15 postpartum, experimental rats produced the same amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in the beginning of lactation, while control rats produced only half the amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in early lactation. Regardless of the nutritional state of the suckling pups, maternal body weight increased progressively over the first four weeks of lactation and remained unchanged during the time of extended lactation. The postpartum diestrus and the subsequent diestrous phase in the time of extended lactation were considerably longer in duration in rats that nursed underfed pups. We analysed the physical structure and functional interpretation of juvenile vocalizations ofCtenomys talarum Thomas, 1898. Two sounds, one true vocalization (care-elicitation call) and one mechanical sound (nursing sound) were recorded during the nestling period. Care-elicitation calls were emitted by isolated pups and caused the mother to respond by immediately approaching the pups to take care of them. This maternal response to the care-elicitation calls ofC. talarum pups, together with the production of these vocalizations during the first weeks after birth, when pups depend exclusively on their mother to obtain food and maintain their body temperature, give preliminary support for the recent theory that care-elicitation cries are honest advertisements of offspring need.  相似文献

The consequences of chronic percutaneous gastric infusion of food dyes on the activity levels and shock avoidance performance of normal developing rats and those treated with 6-hydroxydo p-amine (6-OHDA) were investigated. All pups were artificially reared from four days of age and a liquid diet containing either food dyes (D) or no colorings (N) was infused into both 6-OHDA (T) and sham-treated pups (V). Pups receiving food dyes were significantly more active than comparable pups not receiving food dyes at all ages tested, an effect observed in both 6-OHDA and shamtreated pups. Pups treated with food dyes exhibited an impaired avoidance performance in a shuttle box at 28 days of age. VD and TN pups displayed an over 100% impairment in avoidance performance in comparison with VN pups. These results suggest that food dyes and/or their metabolites may exert deleterious effects on the behavioral repertoire of the developing rat pup.  相似文献

We report Dipylidium caninum for the first time in a wild carnivore in Brazil, the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous). Wistar rat pups are generally more "vocal" than Lister pups;the ultrasonic calls that they produce are usually louder andemitted at a greater rate than those of Lister pups of the sameage and studied under similar conditions of isolation or handling.These differences in ultrasonic behavior are apparently notrelated to differences in the development of homiothermy whichfollows a similar course in both strains. The calls of infantsof the two strains do not show any marked differences in durationor frequency pattern that are consistent over age or treatmentcondition, but the Wistar pups appear to show greater changeswith age than the Lister pups in certain parameters of the calls,while the latter strain show greater changes with treatmentcondition. Similar strain differences in the rate and intensity of callingwere seen during aggressive encounters between adult males,but these cannot be related to differences in aggressive behavior.The strains differ in the duration of both the long "22 kHz"calls (Lister greater than Wistar) and the shorter "50 kHz"calls (Wistar greater than Lister), as well as in the minimumfrequency of these shorter calls (lower in Wistar than in Listerrats).  相似文献

In a study of wolf pup survival, intraperitoneal radio transmitters were surgically implanted in 53 (27 male and 26 female) 3.5- to 8-wk-old Eastern wolf (Canis lycaon) pups at den sites in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, over two whelping seasons (2004 and 2005). Pups were manually removed from dens and initially injected with butorphanol at a dosage of 0.1 mg/kg for sedation and intra-operative analgesia. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with 3% sevoflurane in oxygen via a face mask. Meloxicam (0.3 mg/kg intramuscularly) was given to provide additional analgesia. All surgeries were completed without complications, and pups were readily accepted back into the packs. No postoperative complications were identified, but two pups from a single litter drowned as a result of being moved by the pack to a flooded den following the surgery. In five pups necropsied following natural deaths, transmitters were found lying free within the peritoneal cavity, and there was no evidence of infection at the surgical site or peritonitis. Inhalation anesthesia provided extremely rapid induction (1 min) and recovery (<3 min) and was completely controllable with no residual anesthetic effects. The equipment for inhalation anesthesia was readily portable in field packs, and it has considerable advantages over injectable drugs for small and very young animals such as wolf pups. The utility of the procedure is demonstrated by the minimal effect it had on subsequent pup survival, the rapid recovery of pups following surgery, and the lack of long-term complications as determined by necropsies of pups following natural deaths.  相似文献

The bush dog, Speothos venaticus , is a rare forest-dwelling South American canid. Social behaviour of a captive pack of three adult males and three adult females was observed over four years in a large enclosure. The dogs appeared to be compulsively sociable, sleeping in close physical contact, travelling together in single file, and feeding communally with minimal aggression. An alpha pair was dominant, but there was no clear hierarchy within the pack as a whole. There were, however, separate male and female hierarchies. The pack engaged in various communal behaviours, including greeting ceremonies in which individuals mutually submitted to one another. All dogs urine marked frequently, both sexes adopting postures to direct urine upwards and to soak their fur in odour. Only the alpha female bred successfully, and all other group members carried and guarded the young. These observations are discussed in the contexts of canid social behaviour and the breeding in captivity of this endangered species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the maternal costs of reproduction and pup development in the subterranean rodent Ctenomys talarum (Thomas 1898). Statistical differences were detected in whole-animal metabolic rates between nonreproductive and pregnant or lactating females. Whole-animal metabolic rates during pregnancy and lactation were 128% and 151% of the resting metabolic rate (RMR) observed in nonreproductive females. The total additional energy cost of reproduction (above the nonreproductive level) was similar for both the gestation and lactation periods. Mass-specific RMR revealed an upregulation of cell or tissue metabolism during lactation but not during gestation. The mass-specific metabolic rate of pups was 237% of the adults' metabolic rates. No differences were observed in body temperature among nonreproductive, pregnant, or lactating females. No differences were detected in body mass at birth among pups from litters with different numbers of nestlings. Pups increased their body temperature, reaching adult temperature at 30 d of age, when they were near weaning. Milk constituted the exclusive food for pups until they started eating solid food at 10 d old. Suckling time decreased with age of pups, and at the same time, mother chases directed toward their pups increased. These reproductive characteristics may contribute to successful existence in a subterranean habitat.  相似文献

Physiological weight changes in rat dams and their offspring as sequelae of malnutrition during pregnancy and lactation have been studied. Daily monitoring of the body weight as well as the consumption of food (malnutrition dams 14 g during pregnancy and 20 g during lactation) and drink in control and malnutrition dams was conducted. The number of pregnant dams that completed their pregnant period successfully was registered as well as the number and weight of the pups at birth and their evolution over a period of a month. The percentage of mortality of the pups during that period has been studied. The present results indicate a highly significant decrease in body weight in experimental dams, which determines a retardation in the physiological development of the pups, and yields a higher percentage of mortality in the experimental animals than in controls. It can thus be concluded that malnutrition in utero and during lactation affects the ratio between weight gain for dams and the physical development of their pups.  相似文献

The aerobic dive limit, as defined by an increase in plasma lactate levels following dives, has to date only been determined in adult and juvenile Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii). However, theoretical aerobic dive limits based on calculated total body oxygen stores, estimated metabolic rates, and dive duration frequencies have been published for several species. Using data collected over the past 3 years in McMurdo Sound. Antarctica, the aerobic dive limit of Weddell seal pups was determined by both the physiological and modeling methods. Time-depth diving recorders deployed on 36 pups between 2 and 14 weeks of age allowed the aerobic dive limit to be predicted from duration-frequency histograms. The aerobic dive limit was also calculated from estimates of total body oxygen stores and predicted diving metabolic rates. Finally, these two estimates were compared with aerobic dive limits determined from post-dive lactate levels in three pups between 5 and 7 weeks old. The aerobic dive limits of pups increased with age, but pup aerobic dive limits were still significantly shorter than those of yearlings and adults. In addition, the aerobic dive limits determined by the three methods were not equivalent for pups, yearlings, or adults, and indicate that care should be taken when modeling methods are used to estimate the aerobic dive limit in other species. Changes in hematocrit, plasma glucose, and plasma lactate levels during and between rest, diving, and recovery in pups were compared to known values for juveniles and adults. Plasma metabolite levels were more highly regulated in older pups, and together with the increasing aerobic dive limit, suggest that Weddell seal pups are not refined divers until after they are weaned, and that their diving ability continues to develop over several years.  相似文献

Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) populations have undergone precipitous declines through their western Alaskan range over the last four decades with the leading hypothesis to explain this decline centering around changing prey quality, quantity, or availability for this species (i.e., nutritional stress hypothesis). Under chronic conditions of reduced food intake sea lions would conserve energy by limiting energy expenditures through lowering of metabolic rate known as metabolic depression. To examine the potential for nutritional stress, resting metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition were measured in free-ranging juvenile Steller sea lions (N = 91) at three distinct geographical locations (Southeast Alaska, Prince William Sound, Central Aleutian Islands) using open-flow respirometry and deuterium isotope dilution, respectively. Average sea lion RMR ranged from 6.7 to 36.2 MJ d−1 and was influenced by body mass, total body lipid, and to a lesser extent, ambient air temperature and age. Sea lion pups captured in the Aleutian Islands (region of decline) had significantly greater body mass and total body lipid stores when compared to pups from Prince William Sound (region of decline) and Southeast Alaska (stable region). Along with evidence of robust body condition in Aleutian Island pups, no definitive differences were detected in RMR between sea lions sampled between eastern and western populations that could not be accounted for by higher percent total body lipid content, suggesting that that at the time of this study, Steller sea lions were not experiencing metabolic depression in the locations studied.  相似文献

Fostering was studied in females of an African rodent Saccostomus campestris , the pouched mouse, which, contrary to most other rodents, is a solitary species. Females will only tolerate their own offspring and other adults are viciously attacked at all times except during the short period of pro-oestrus, when a male will be temporarily accepted.
Alien pups (n = 857) of different age-groups (0–30 days) were introduced to lactating females (n = 191) with their own pups (n = 1053) of different age-groups (0–20 days) over a period of three years. The total number of pups per female was made up to 10 (e.g. 7 own + 3 alien or 4 own + 6 alien).
The 'foster mother' readily accepted and successfully reared alien pups provided they were less than 21 days of age when introduced. Weaned alien pups, introduced when 25 or 30 days old, were viciously attacked by the foster mother and had to be removed, althoughin the breeding colony, pups that were allowed to remain with their mother after weaning were not attacked. It appears that up to weaning-age, female Saccostomus campestris may not distinguish between may not distinguis between their own and alien offspring, but rather between suckling and weaned pups.  相似文献

Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii) populations in the inland waters of Washington and British Columbia are at or near carrying capacity. Stranded pups often are collected and admitted to rehabilitation centers, and then released when they reach a weight of 22 kg and meet a variety of preestablished health and release conditions. While rehabilitation is common practice, it is unclear if rehabilitated seal pups behave like wild weaned pups. Using satellite transmitters, we compared movement patterns of 10 rehabilitated pups with 10 wild weaned pups. When released, rehabilitated seals were longer and heavier than wild pups, while wild pups had a larger mean axillary girth. No clinically different blood parameters were detected. On average, rehabilitated harbor seal pups traveled nearly twice as far cumulatively, almost three times as far daily, and dispersed over three times as far from the release site compared to wild weaned seals. Additionally, wild harbor seals transmitted nearly twice as long as did rehabilitated seals. These patterns suggest that learned behavior during the brief 3–4 wk nursing period likely enables wild harbor seal pups to move less daily and remain closer to their weaning site than rehabilitated pups.  相似文献
