A part of the western Irish Sea is strongly stratified during the summer months, with the boundary of stratification marked by a front with horizontal temperature gradients. Continuous on-line analysis has been used to record the surface water variability of nine characteristics along a cruise path in this area.Multivariate analysis (principal component) indicates the presence of four distinct water types separated by thermal gradients. Two of these water types show land mass influence and two illustrated the effects of the mixed and stratified regimes. The stratified surface waters had a marked degree of homogeneity with respect to the measured characteristics, while the mixed surface waters exhibited greater variability. Marked micro-variations in chlorophyll a concentrations were observed in the latter water type.No consistent relationships were observed among the physical, chemical, and biological variables across the front because of the gradual change in the gross properties of the mixed surface water during its northward passage through the Irish Sea.  相似文献

The European shelf seas can be divided into regions which have tidally mixed waters and thermally stratified waters. The tidally mixed near shore environments support zooplankton communities dominated by smaller copepods and having large meroplankton contributions. These small copepods (Centropages spp., Temora spp., Acartia spp., Paral Pseudo/Microcalanus spp.) together with the microzooplankton component form a different and more complex food web than the larger copepod/diatom link associated with thermally stratified waters. The copepods Calanus finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus account for over 90% of the copepod dry weight biomass in stratified waters. Although occurring in lower numbers in mixed waters they can still make significant contributions to the biomass. A 31 year time series from the European shelf shows the inter- and intea-annual variability of these species. The basic biology and food web that these two systems support, and the transfer of energy, can result in marked differences in quantity and quality of particulates available as food for fish larvae. Calanus dominated systems allow the primary production to be directed straight through the trophic food chain (diatoms/Calanus/fish larvae) while the near shore communities of smaller copepods limit the amount of energy being transferred to the higher trophic levels. Eighty-two Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder hauls were used as the data base for this study. In all cases the zooplankton was dominated by copepods both in numbers and biomass accounting for > 80% of total zooplankton dry weight in the Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, shelf edge of the Celtic Sea and the northern and southern North Sea in Spring.  相似文献

Otolith growth and RNA/DNA ratios of larval stages of Notolepis coatsi, Gobionotothen gibberifrons and Trematomus scotti, three Antarctic fish, were studied during early 1998. RNA/DNA ratios were significantly different between the notothenioids and paralepidids (P<0.01), but similar among notothenioids (P>0.05). The ratios were independent of larval total length and water temperature. Recent otolith growth (based on the last five increments) and biochemical indices correlated slightly, but not significantly. N. coatsi inhabited deeper and colder waters of the Weddell Sea and showed less growth than the other species, which are associated with the Antarctic Peninsula. In all three species, some larvae had very good growth rates though most were rather poor. Recent growth indices might allow the detection and back-dating of growth changes in Antarctic larvae, and provide insight into a crucial yet poorly understood life-phase of these fish.  相似文献

The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, is a commercially exploited decapod which is widely distributed throughout the north-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Ovigerous females originating from the Mediterranean and the Irish Seas were held in the laboratory until larvae hatched. Biomass and biochemical composition, as well as digestive gland structure, were examined in newly hatched larvae from these two regions. In addition, previously published data from a North Sea population were included in our comparison. Elemental analyses showed that the absolute quantities of dry mass (DM), carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and hydrogen (H) (collectively referred to as CHN) per individual, and the C:N mass ratios, were significantly lower, while the relative CHN, protein and lipid values (in % of DM) were higher in samples from the Irish Sea compared to larvae originating from either the Mediterranean or the North Sea. As in CHN, the absolute level of protein per individual was higher in larvae from the Mediterranean, while no significant differences were observed in the individual lipid contents. Likewise, the digestive gland structure at hatching did not show any differences between study areas. Intraspecific variability in biomass and chemical composition of newly hatched larvae from different regions may be related to differential patterns of reproduction in regions with different climatic conditions. Lobster larvae hatch in the Mediterranean Sea predominantly in winter when both water temperature and planktonic food availability are at a minimum, while hatching in the Irish Sea occurs under more favourable conditions in spring. Hence, significantly higher wet mass, dry mass and protein values in Mediterranean larvae may represent adaptive traits allowing for early posthatching survival and development under food-limited conditions in an oligotrophic environment.Communicated by H.-D. The distributions and abundances of copepod and barnacle naupliiare described along a five-station transect in the Irish Seafrom Liverpool Bay, England, to Dundalk Bay, Ireland, in May1989. Correspondence analysis revealed that various hydrographicregions in the Irish Sea are characterized by distinct naupliusassemblages. Acartia, Centropages and Temora nauplii were associatedwith the Welsh coastal water east of the Liverpool Bay front. The western stratified water to the west of the seasonal, westernIrish Sea front was distinguished from the mixed water to theeast by abundances of Calanus, Pseudocalanus, Oithona, Microcalanusand harpacticoid nauplii. The Liverpool Bay and western IrishSea fronts are, apparently, boundaries between coastal and offshoreassemblages of crustacean nauplii.  相似文献

Summary

Spawnings, larval occurrence and settlement of some marine invertebrates were examined over a six-year period at Lough Hyne, an inlet on the south coast of Ireland. Sea temperature rises were associated with multi-phyla spawnings, temperatures varied between years and greater numbers of larvae and greater settlements were noted in the warmer years. It is suggested that, should sea temperatures rise, conditions for successful recruitment for some species will become more favourable in Irish waters. However, unpredictable effects such as the expansion of exotic populations because conditions become more favourable for them may result in significant modification of diversity and abundance of species.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance of Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus helgolandicusin the North Channel and stratified region of the western IrishSea is reviewed using data collected between 1992 and 1996.Both species occur in the western Irish Sea, but were more abundantin the stratified region during spring. Increased abundanceduring May/June was attributed to an increase in copepoditestages. Calanus helgolandicus dominated in both regions, exhibitingspring and autumn peaks in abundance in the stratified region. It is argued that the presence of ripe females and naupliarstages in the stratified region is evidence of an in situ breedingpopulation, rather than advection of individuals from populationcentres outside the Irish Sea. The lack of geographical separationof the two species in the western Irish sea, and reports thatboth species occur in the Celtic Sea and Malin Shelf, limitthe use of either species as indicators of exchange processesbetween the Irish Sea and neighbouring waters.  相似文献

Wet mass and DNA, RNA and protein content increased significantly with standard length ( L S) of sardine Sardina pilchardus larvae, collected in January 1995, in the Bay of Málaga, North Alboran Sea. L S, wet mass and DNA, RNA and protein content were closely related allometrically to otolith radius ( R ). Larval daily length increments decreased but DNA, protein and wet mass daily increments increased with larval age. Daily length increments showed a negative and poor relationship with long-term otolith growth. In contrast, DNA, protein and wet mass daily increments were positively correlated. Differences between observed and back-calculated otolith radius-at-age indicated that larvae with slow otolith growth were under represented in older age groups, suggesting the existence of growth-selective mortality. Recent otolith growth, estimated from the mean widths of the last six increments, increased with age and R . Individual RNA: DNA and protein: DNA ratios were correlated significantly, although weakly, with L S and larval growth.  相似文献

Nutritional condition and vertical distribution of Baltic cod larvae   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Newly hatched Baltic cod Gadus morhua larvae are typically found at depths >60 m. This is a region of low light and prey availability, hence generating the hypothesis that larvae have to migrate from hatching depth to the surface layer to avoid starvation and improve their nutritional condition. To test this hypothesis, Baltic cod larvae were sampled during the spawning seasons of 1994 and 1995 with depth-resolving multiple opening/closing nets. Each larva was aged by otolith readings and its RNA/DNA ratio was determined as a measure of nutritional condition. The RNA/DNA ratios of these larvae aged 2-25 days (median 10 days) ranged from 0.4 to 6.2, corresponding to levels exhibited by starving and fast-growing larvae in laboratory calibration studies (starvation, protein growth rate, Gpi= -12.2% day−1; fastgrowing larvae, Gpi=14.1%day−1) respectively. Seventy per cent of the field caught larvae had RNA/DNA ratios between the mean values found for starving and fed laboratory larvae. Only larvae aged 8-11 days had higher mean RNA/DNA ratios above 45 m than below ( t -test, P<0.05). However, the instantaneous protein growth rates were significantly higher for all larval age groups in the surface layers ( t -test, P<0.05). Starving larvae were found in all depths sampled (10-85 m), whereas growing larvae (positive Gpi) were restricted to samples taken shallower than 45 m. These superior growth rates above 45 m corroborate the hypothesis and imply that migration to the shallow water layers is a prerequisite for good nutritional condition, growth and survival of Baltic cod larvae. The frequent occurrence of cod larvae older than 8 days in the deep water in poor condition suggests that a proportion of the larvae will die from Starvation in the deep layers of the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Temperature and prey availability have a marked effect on thedevelopment and growth of Sagitta elegans. This study addressesthe effects of thermal stratification on the growth and sizeof adult S.elegans in the western Irish Sea. It shows that instratified waters, bottom water temperature had a greater effecton the development of mature adults than surface water temperature.Whilst the length of mature individuals caught in 1992 and 1994decreased with increasing temperature, they did not conformto the models of McLaren (1963) and Sameoto (1971), as the animalswere larger than predicted. The long breeding period found inthe stratified region, suggests that previous reports of oneor two generations per year in the western Irish Sea do notaccount for the likely mix of generations that occur from Februarythrough to September.  相似文献

European eels (Anguilla anguilla) undertake spawning migrations of more than 5000 km from continental Europe and North Africa to frontal zones in the Sargasso Sea. Subsequently, the larval offspring are advected by large-scale eastward ocean currents towards continental waters. However, the Sargasso Sea is oligotrophic, with generally low plankton biomass, and the feeding biology of eel larvae has so far remained a mystery, hampering understanding of this peculiar life history. DNA barcoding of gut contents of 61 genetically identified A. anguilla larvae caught in the Sargasso Sea showed that even the smallest larvae feed on a striking variety of plankton organisms, and that gelatinous zooplankton is of fundamental dietary importance. Hence, the specific plankton composition seems essential for eel larval feeding and growth, suggesting a linkage between eel survival and regional plankton productivity. These novel insights into the prey of Atlantic eels may furthermore facilitate eel larval rearing in aquaculture, which ultimately may replace the unsustainable use of wild-caught glass eels.  相似文献

On the basis of an ichthyoplankton survey made in July 2003 in Kandalaskha Gulf, the Basin, the Gorlo Strait, and the Voronka the species composition and distribution of fish eggs and larvae are investigated. The ichtyoplankton comprises 17 fish species, of which the majority (11) were boreal forms. Other fish were represented by arctic species (2) and arctic-boreal species (4). The traits of distribution of abundantly caught species are considered in detail: larvae of the White Sea oligovertebrate herring Clupea pallasii marisabli, eggs of the dab Limanda limanda, larvae of the northern sand lance Ammodytes marinus, and of the capelin Mallotus villosus villosus. The presence of all larvae of White Sea herring only within Kandalaskha Gulf is considered to be evidence supporting the hypothesis suggested by Dmitriev (1946) on the absence of their drift beyond large gulfs of the White Sea. The natural barrier for mutual exchange with early developmental stages of fish between the White Sea and the Barents Sea in summer may be a developed hydrologic front in the boundary area of the Basin and Gorlo Strait, discovered in the course of the survey. This front causes their death by thermohaline shock in the abrupt gradient zone.  相似文献

Larvae of Coregonus spp. were reared in the laboratory under different temperature (4, 6 and 8°C) and feeding conditions ( ad libitum , limited, with starvation intervals). Their RNA/DNA ratios were determined with a highly sensitive fluorescence technique. After resorption of their yolk reserves (about 2 weeks after hatching), well fed larvae (RNA/DNA >2.5) could be significantly distinguished from larvae reared under limited food supply (RNA/DNA < 2.5), both at the 6 and 8°C levels. At 4°C, no differences due to the feeding regime were found. During a second series of experiments, larvae were affected by an intestinal disease, which was caused by the ingestion of unsuitable copepod plankton. This disease provoked high mortality, decreased growth and RNA/DNA ratios which were almost as low as in temporarily starved larvae from the first series. Coregonid larvae sampled in Lake Constance during spring 1990 showed RNA/DNA ratios which were unexpectedly low when judged on the basis of mean body length and average ambient temperature. It was obvious from macroscopic observations that some of these wild larvae were severely attacked by the intestinal disease. The low RNA/DNA ratios in field samples are, therefore, interpreted as a sublethal result of this disease.

It was determined on the basis of data on species composition and distribution that ichthyoplankton in the Sea of Japan within the exclusive economic zone of Russia was represented in October 1995 and September 2001 by 13 species. Anchovy Engraulis japonicus and saury Cololabis saira were the most abundant and widely distributed. The area of distribution of anchovy larvae and juveniles was great, but was restricted mostly to subtropical waters. The larvae and juveniles of saury were captured to the west of the frontal interface in the waters of subarctic structure. The character of the distribution of early progeny suggests that the spawning of saury in summer ran in the economic zone of Russia. The early progeny of saury was absent in the zone of Japan filled with subtropical waters. Because of peculiarities of spawning strategy of the spawners, the regions of distribution and maximum concentrations of their larvae and juveniles did not overlap and were associated with different water masses. The species composition of larvae and young fishes collected with the Maruchi-Ami fry net was more diverse in comparison to the fish-egg net IKS-80. The parameters of the catches of both nets on conversion to the filtered volume of water were comparable only in the regions with increased concentrations of larvae and juveniles. The fry net was not very efficient for calculating recruitment in the dispersed autumn aggregations.  相似文献

Starved Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae were characterized by relatively lower levels of RNA content throughout their early life stages. Significant differences in the RNA: DNA ratios were found between fed and starved fish, and appeared to increase as starvation proceeded. Ontogenetic changes in RNA: DNA ratios were clearly observed during metamorphosis, especially decreasing during the period from the late-metamorphic to postmetamorphic stages. The criteria established from these laboratory experiments, were applied to the nutritional condition of wild larvae and juveniles collected in Wakasa Bay, Sea of Japan in 1994 and 1995 by measuring RNA and DNA content. Starved fish were mainly found in stage I (settling stage) fish during the late season of settlement in 1995. This suggests that starvation could be associated with settlement in Japanese flounder.  相似文献

We compared the timing of larval release by Uca thayeri exposed to different tidal regimes. Crabs on Florida's East Coast experience semidiurnal tides, whereas crabs on the Florida's West Coast experience mixed tides.

In both populations, hatching occurred shortly after high tide. On the East Coast, most crabs released their larvae between dusk and midnight, a few days before the maximum amplitude spring tides. On the West Coast, most crabs released their larvae during the afternoon tropic tides of greater amplitude. West Coast crabs may release during the day because ebbing tides at night are too weak for effective transport. Thus, at each location, hatching occurs when phase relationships between the ebbing tides, the light–dark cycle, and tidal amplitude are most favorable. Further study is required to determine whether females on each Coast show fixed responses to each tidal regime, or whether they can alter their hatching rhythms upon exposure to different tides.  相似文献

Hatchery reared larval striped bass, Morone saxatilis , 8-days-post-hatching were subjected to various feeding/starvation regimes over a period of 14 days.
Batches of larvae from each treatment were sampled over the 14-day period and subdivided for determination of notochord length and RNA:DNA ratio. The best growth was found in fully fed F1000 larvae (exposed to 1000 Artermia nauplii l−1), which reached 8.2 mm after 11 days and 9.6 mm after 14 days. Starved animals after 11 days had notochord lengths of 4.9 mm. Growth curves from feeding-delayed larvae indicated that animals fed after up to 5 days starvation were capable of complete recovery. F100 larvae (exposed to 100 Anemia nauplii 1−l) had a slower growth rate than F1000 larvae, reaching a notochord length of 7.3 mm after 14 days. RNA:DNA ratios over time closely followed notochord growth curves, with clear differences between starved, F100 and F1000 larvae being established after only 2 days. Equilibrium RNA:DNA ratios of 3.0 and 2.25 were established in F1000 and F100 larvae, respectively, 6.8 days after the beginning of the experiment. The average lag time between a change from the starved to the fed condition and a change in RNA:DNA ratio as determined by the divergence of the nucleic acid curve from the starved condition was 0.66 days.
In treatments where starvation followed various periods of feeding, larvae regressed in notochord length such that the final length at 14 days reflected the degree of feeding. RNA:DNA ratios in these animals again closely followed growth curves with a lag time of 0.81 days.
It was concluded that RNA:DNA ratios provided very accurate indices of growth in striped bass larvae which were highly sensitive to feeding status.  相似文献

Summary Water types of the North Sea with different plankton are the thermally stratified northern and central regions with a relatively nutrient rich inflow of Atlantic water, a mixed region in the southern North Sea with a poor inflow of Channel water, and turbid narrow coastal zones with inflow of nutrient rich river water. Plankton studies reveal that the primary production starts early, in February, in the southern region, but is delayed in the coastal zones by turbidity. In stratified areas the algal spring bloom is delayed by mixing towards the greater depth and usually starts with the onset of thermal stratification. The spring bloom soon declines and the algae remain on a low density level in summer, presumably due to depletion of nutrients in the euphotic zone. The coastal zones and the frontal zones between mixed and stratified water have a relatively high summer primary production. The herbivores (mainly planktonic copepodes and the tunicateOikopleura dioica) grow and increase in number when the temperature rises and food is available. There is a considerable mismatch with the algal spring bloom, which comes too early and is too short in most regions. The best coincidence occurs in the coastal zones and maybe the frontal zones. Carnivores build high biomasses in late summer and fall in the coastal regions and compete with fish larvae for food and also kill many fish larvae. The large scyphomedusae are most important in this respect. The overall yearly primary production of the North Sea is estimated to be about 100 mg C.m–2. The estimates for herbivores and fish are 20 and 1 mg C.m–2. Considering a growth efficiency of 20%, the herbivores must consume all algae produced. The indication of a low consumption due to bad phenological coincidence in most regions leads to the assumption, that either primary production is underestimated or there is a considerable influx of organic matter from the Atlantic Ocean. During June–July 1979 the carnivore consumption was estimated in the coastal zone of the Southern Bight to be 39 mg C.m–2.d–1 at a copepod production of 20 mg C.m–2.d–1. Consumption by fish larvae and large jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii) was 15% and 74%, respectively. It seems clear that the productivity of the North Sea depends highly on coastal and frontal zones, where herbivores find sufficient food at optimal growth conditions. Most organic matter will at the end be consumed by invertebrate carnivores, which urge fish populations to reproduce early in spring or to recruit at remote places.  相似文献
