A series of mouse lines has been produced by 19 generations of restricted index selection for rate of development during early and late ontogeny. The selection program was based on an index with the following four replicated selection treatments: E(+) and E(-) were selected to alter birth to 10-day body weight gain while holding late gain for both selection lines constant; correspondingly, L(+) and L(-) were selected to alter 28- to 56-day body weight gain holding early gain for both lines constant. Herein, we characterize response to selection for growth rate by analyzing age-specific mouse body weight and tail lengths and for growth curves using a logistics model. Selection on developmental rate has resulted in divergence in both age-specific and growth curve traits. E(+) and L(+) lines reached identical weights during the late selection interval, then diverged to unique mature weights. E(-) and L(-) lines similarly achieved identical weights during late selection and diverged to unique mature weights. However, the shapes of early and late growth curves were significantly divergent, and at least two distinct growth patterns are shown to result from selection. Response in body weight gain was accompanied by similar, though less pronounced, change in tail length traits. Significant response during intervals of restricted growth was also found, especially in lines selected for late gain. The evolution of the growth trajectory under restricted index selection is discussed in terms of drift and available additive genetic variation and covariation.  相似文献

The effects of aging as well as body weight on conversion of circulating Androstendione (A) to Estrone (E1) in 21 postmenopausal women of different ages and body weights have been studied. Serum concentration of A and E1 were measured by RIA. The E1/A ratio was correlated with total body weight, body mass index, excessive body weight, age and years after cessation of menstruation. The results show that the E1/A ratio was significantly correlated with total body weight, body mass index and excessive body weight. In contrast the E1/A ratio is not significantly correlated with age or years after cessation of menstruation.  相似文献

Body surface areas (BSA) were determined for strain 13 guinea pigs with body weights ranging from 191 to 1011 g. For this determination, the entire skin of each animal was removed immediately after death and flattened on a wax film with a homogeneous paper. The skin outlines on the paper were cut and weighed for determining BSA. The K value was calculated for each guinea pig as the ratio of BSA (cm2)/body weight (g)2/3. Significantly different K values of 11.31 +/- 0.11, 9.66 +/- 0.09, 9.22 +/- 0.05, and 9.17 +/- 0.05 were determined for average body weights of 218 +/- 24, 527 +/- 33, 706 +/- 60, and 943 +/- 30 g, respectively. By plotting these K values on semilog paper and determining the best fit curve of the slope, it was possible to extrapolate exponentially the K values for different body weights. The relationship between age and body weight was also established for guinea pigs, and a series of K values were determined from birth to 35 weeks of life. We conclude that a different K value should be used for calculating BSA for various ages and body weights of strain 13 guinea pigs.  相似文献

We estimated heritabilities and genetic correlations for a suite of 15 characters in five functional groups in an advanced intercross population of over 2000 mice derived from a cross of inbred lines selected for high and low heat loss. Heritabilities averaged 0.56 for three body weights, 0.23 for two energy balance characters, 0.48 for three bone characters, 0.35 for four measures of adiposity, and 0.27 for three organ weights, all of which were generally consistent in magnitude with estimates derived in previous studies. Genetic correlations varied from -0.65 to +0.98, and were higher within these functional groups than between groups. These correlations generally conformed to a priori expectations, being positive in sign for energy expenditure and consumption (+0.24) and negative in sign for energy expenditure and adiposity (-0.17). The genetic correlations of adiposity with body weight at 3, 6, and 12 weeks of age (-0.29, -0.22, -0.26) all were negative in sign but not statistically significant. The independence of body weight and adiposity suggests that this advanced intercross population is ideal for a comprehensive discovery of genes controlling regulation of mammalian adiposity that are distinct from those for body weight.  相似文献

Body weights of adult baboons (genera Papio, Mandrillus, and Theropithecus) were gathered from notes of collectors and museum records. However, these data were insufficient to establish mean body weights for all baboon groups. Thus, log cube roots of mean body weights were regressed as functions of the logs of several cranial and dental variables. The resulting least squares regression coefficients were used to estimate weights for 503 adult baboons from cranial measurements. The ability of the various regression functions to assess baboon body weight was determined by comparing reported and estimated mean and individual body weights. The best estimator of baboon body weights was the function derived from the factor scores of a principal components analysis of seven craniometric variables regressed on body weight. However, each of these craniometric variables singly was nearly as precise an estimator of body weight as the multivariate combination of all seven. Other measurements such as dental dimensions and foramen magnum area estimated weight less accurately. Body weight estimates derived from the regression analyses coupled with museum and literature records allowed an assessment of size relationships among all baboon groups.  相似文献

建立高原鼢鼠(Eospalax baileyi)种群年龄鉴定划分标准,可为对其的监测及防控提供科学依据。研究于2015年5月、10月分别在甘南草原碌曲县采用夹捕法捕捉高原鼢鼠469只(雄鼠209只,雌鼠260只),在对样本进行逐个解剖和数据记录之后,参考其体重、体长、胴体重及毛色等,对高原鼢鼠的年龄划分标准进行研究。依据胴体重将高原鼢鼠分为6组:亚成年组(雄144 g,雌106 g),成年Ⅰ组(雄144~210 g,雌106~148 g)、成年Ⅱ组(雄211~276 g,雌149~190 g)、成年Ⅲ组(雄277~342 g,雌191~232 g)、成年Ⅳ组(雄343~408 g,雌233~274 g)和老年组(雄409 g,雌275 g)。年龄结构表显示,不同的季节和不同地理区域高原鼢鼠的种群年龄结构类型均为增长型。  相似文献

Questions concerned with the relationship between organ weights and body weight on an intraspecific level are best answered by using a sample of animals collected in the wild from a single locale during a single season. The organ weights and body weights for this study were obtained from the necropsy reports prepared in the field (Athi Plain, Kenya) by H. C. McGill, Jr. on 36 adult animals (18 males and 18 females). Dental and facial measurements were taken by M.I. Siegel. In order to avoid erroneous results produced by statistical treatment of combined sex samples of sexually dimorphic species, data on the sexes were analyzed separately. Means and standard deviations are reported for selected organ weights and body dimensions (heart, lung, liver, spleen, kidney, adrenal, brain, and pancreas weights, crown–rump length, crown–heel length, head circumference, chest circumference, and body weight). All of the above measures were significantly (p<0.05) different between the sexes. Logarithms of these measures were significantly correlated with the logarithm of body weight in males for heart, lung, liver, spleen, kidney, and adrenal weights, crown–heel length, and head and chest circumference, and in females for crown–heel length, heart, liver, and kidney weights. Partial correlational analysis, removing the effects of body size (weight), showed mostly negative correlational relationships between dental and visceral dimensions. Most of the correlations between facial and visceral dimensions were negative. Allometric equations were calculated for the dental, facial, and visceral dimensions versus body weight, and are compared with prior published results.  相似文献

1. Reaction norms for size and age at maturity were studied in Epirrita autumnata (Lepidoptera, Geometridae). Growth rates were manipulated by rearing larvae on different levels of food quality and quantity, and instar-specific final weights and development times were recorded.
2. Food level and initial weight of an instar accounted for most of the variance in final weights. Sexual dimorphism in pupal weights could be entirely ascribed to sex differences in initial weights of the last instar.
3. There were problems with considering the reaction norms optimal within the conventional demographic explanatory framework. Because fecundity increases linearly with body size and no costs of large adult size are known, one should expect female larvae to grow larger to increase their individual fitness. It is therefore likely that constraints play a major role in the determination, and evolution, of size in this species.
4. A focus on individual instars may be the best way to reveal the constraints on, and space for, adaptive evolution of insect growth. Some limit to the initial:final weight ratio of an instar, and the fixed number of instars, may represent important constraints.
5. Reaction norms like the ones described in this study lead to strong environmental determination rather than canalization of body size. Food quality throughout larval development may thus be very important for individual fitness and population dynamics in E. autumnata.  相似文献

Many dimensions of the postcranial skeleton of ruminant artiodactyls scale closely with body weight and are therefore potentially useful as predictors of body weight in fossil species. Using 45 dimensions of the skeleton a series of predictive equations was generated based on the scaling relationships of the family Bovidae. As a test of their usefulness these equations were used to predict body weights of a number of living ruminant artiodactyls, and six genera of fossil artiodactyls. For most species body weight estimates within 25° of actual weight were given by the mean of the predicted weights from all measurements except lengths of long bones. While femur length was a reasonable predictor of body weight, lengths of distal long bones were unreliable and should not be used as indicators of relative or absolute body weights. Some non-length measurements are biased in certain taxonomic groups; the possibility of erroneous estimates from such measurements can be reduced by using as many estimators of body weight as are available. No species of artiodactyl tested is so highly modified in all dimensions that all results were erroneous. Subsets of measurements which might be available from a typical fossil fragment also gave reliable results.  相似文献

In England juvenile Willow warblers undergo premigratory lipid deposition in August. Prior to this there is a moult of the juvenile plumage which results in a reduction in both the glycogen content and the wet weight of the pectoralis muscles, the latter reflecting a decrease in the lipid-free dry weight. Muscle lipid levels are apparently unaffected by this moult. The decrease in the weight of the lipid-free dry fraction of the body extends also to components other than these muscles at this time. A correlation between the wet weight and the glycogen content of the pectoralis muscles suggests that cold stress may be the cause of the low glycogen levels found in the middle of the moult; part of this increased demand for thermogenesis may be due to lower body insulation brought about by feather loss during the moult. The muscle "hypertrophy" found in the premigratory period is simply a return to pre-moult weights.
The uniformity of total body weights during and after the moult indicates that at the end of this moult the water fraction of the body decreases in weight. The pectoralis muscles of juvenile Willow warblers are not fully grown on fledging; these unmoulted birds may also have higher body lipid levels than during the following moult.  相似文献

YOST, TRUDY J, DALAN R JENSEN AND ROBERT H ECKEL. Weight regain following sustained weight reduction is predicted by relative insulin sensitivity. Obes Res. Ten moderately obese women (body mass index 34.9 ± 1.1 kg/m2 mean ± SEM), had previously been through a 3-month weight loss program followed by 3 months of weight maintenance at the reduced weight. A euglycemic clamp for determination of insulin sensitivity was performed on each subject prior to weight loss, and another at the end of the weight maintenance phase. The mean weight loss for the group was 11.4 ± 2.2 kg. The women were then seen for follow-up weights 12 months and 18 months after the conclusion of the weight maintenance period. All of the women except one had regained their weight by the time of the 12-month visit. It was found that the amount of weight regained both at 12 months and 18 months was correlated with the change in insulin sensitivity which occurred from the baseline study to after weight loss/maintenance. The data indicate that increased insulin sensitivity following sustained weight loss in obese women predicts weight regain.  相似文献

目的测定封闭群五指山小型猪主要脏器重量和脏器系数,对脏器重量与体重的相关性进行分析,并计算出相应的直线回归方程和多元回归方程。方法实验选用6-10月龄普通级封闭群五指山小型猪30头(其中♂16头、♀14头),分别测定体重和7个主要脏器重量,计算脏器系数,通过SAS软件进行脏器系数的性别间比较和各脏器重与体重间的相关与回归分析。结果性别间比较,小型猪仅有心脏的脏器系数差异有显著性(P〈0.05)。除公猪的胃脏和母猪的肺脏外,所测脏器重量与体重间均有明显的正相关线性关系;多因素分析显示公猪的肝脏和肾脏,母猪的心脏、肝脏和肾脏对各自体重有影响。结论封闭群五指山小型猪主要脏器系数性别间差异较小,其体重与某些脏器重量存在一定的线性关系。  相似文献

Reindeer/caribou (Rangifer tarandus), which constitute a biological resource of vital importance for the physical and cultural survival of Arctic residents, and inhabit extremely seasonal environments, have received little attention in the global change debate. We investigated how body weight and growth rate of reindeer calves were affected by large-scale climatic variability [measured by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) winter index] and density in one population in central Norway. Body weights of calves in summer and early winter, as well as their growth rate (summer to early winter), were significantly influenced by density and the NAO index when cohorts were in utero. Males were heavier and had higher absolute growth than females, but there was no evidence that preweaning condition of male and female calves were influenced differently by the NAO winter index. Increasing NAO index had a negative effect on calves' body weight and growth rate. Increasing density significantly reduced body weight and growth rate of calves, and accentuated the effect of the NAO winter index. Winters with a higher NAO index are thus severe for reindeer calves in this area and their effects are associated with nutritional stress experienced by the dams during pregnancy or immediately after calving. Moreover, increased density may enhance intra-specific competition and limits food available at the individual level within cohorts. We conclude that if the current pattern of global warming continues, with greater change occurring in northern latitudes and during winter as is predicted, reduced body weight of reindeer calves may be a consequence in areas where winters with a high NAO index are severe. This will likely have an effect on the livelihood of many northern indigenous peoples, both economically and culturally.  相似文献

从生态要素、生态过程、生态功能和生态问题4个主题出发,构建了包含16个指标的北京城市生态质量评价指标体系,并分别采用熵权法、最差状态法和最佳状态法对指标进行赋权,通过加权平均法构建了北京城市生态要素指数(EEI)、生态过程指数(EPI)、生态功能指数(EFI)、生态问题指数(EDI)和综合生态质量指数(CEI),用以评价1996—2005年北京城市生态质量动态变化.结果表明:研究期间,北京城市EEI无明显改善,持续维持在远离理想点的水平;EPI和EFI改善显著,由1996年的远离理想点到2005年接近于理想点的水平;EDI的年度波动较大,普遍远离理想点;CEI得到持续改善,但离理想点依然有一定距离.当人均国内生产总值(GDP)小于3 000美元时,EPI、EFI和CEI随GDP的增长而快速增大,改善显著,当人均GDP超过3 000美元后,EPI、EFI和CEI随GDP增长而增大的速度减慢;EEI和EDI受人均GDP的影响较小,主要受限于自然条件及全球和区域环境的变化.  相似文献

This study investigated the social factors associated with body-shape preferences for females and males as perceived by Arab women living in Qatar, and correlated the current weight status of women studied with these preferences. The subjects were 535 non-pregnant Arab women aged 20-67 years, who attended heath centres in Doha City, the capital of the State of Qatar. Illustrations of male and female body shapes ranging from very thin to very obese using the 9-figure Silhouettes scale were shown to women, and they were asked to select their preferred figure. Body mass index (BMI) was used to determine the weight status of women studied. Age, educational level and employment status were found to be significantly associated with ideal body-shape preference for both males and females, whereas marital status and current weight status had no significant association. In general, the Arab women studied selected a more mid-range of body fatness for males than for females. It is concluded that attention should be given to sociocultural factors, such as body-shape preferences, in any programmes to promote ideal body weight for the public.  相似文献

Obesity is one of the major public health problems worldwide and it is generally associated with many diseases. Although synthetic drugs are available for the treatment of obesity, herbal remedies may provide safe, natural, and cost-effective alternative to synthetic drugs. One example of such drugs is Melastoma malabathricum var Alba Linn (MM). Although several studies have been reported for the pharmacological activities of MM, there is no report on the anti-obesity effect of MM. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the anti-obesity potential of methanolic extract of MM. The anti-obesity effect of MM on rats fed with a high-fat diet was investigated through determination of the changes in body weight, fat weight, organ weights, and blood biochemicals. The animals in this study were divided into three groups: a normal group with a standard diet (N), a control group fed with high-fat diet (C), and a MM treatment group fed with high-fat (HFD + MM) diet for 8 weeks. There was no significant difference in the amount of food intake between control and HFD + MM treatments. These results also suggest that MM does not induce a dislike for the diet due to its smell or taste. The study shows that MM significantly prevented increases in body weight, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and total lipids that resulted from the high-fat diet. MM also decreased the epididymal fat (E-fat) and retroperitoneal fat (R-fat) weights and phospholipid concentrations induced by the high-fat diet. On the basis of these findings, it was concluded that MM had anti-obesity effects by suppressing body weight gain and abdominal fat formation.KEY WORDS: Anti-obesity, High-fat diet, Melastoma malabathricum var Alba Linn  相似文献

Multiple-trait analyses have been shown to improve the detection of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) with multiple effects. Here we applied a multiple-trait approach on obesity- and growth-related traits that were surveyed in 275 F2 mice generated from an intercross between the high body weight selected line NMRI8 and DBA/2 as lean control. The parental lines differed 2.5-fold in body weight at the age of 6 weeks. Within the F2 population, the correlations between body weight and weights of abdominal fat weight, muscle, liver and kidney at the age of 6 weeks were about 0.8. A least squares multiple-trait QTL analysis was performed on these data to understand more precisely the cause of the genetic correlation between body weight, body composition traits and weights of inner organs. Regions on Chr 1, 2, 7 and 14 for body weights at different early ages and regions on Chr 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 17 and 19 for organ weights at 6 weeks were found to have significant multiple effects at the genome-wide level.  相似文献

Summary Body composition was studied in three lines of mice, one selected for high (H) and one for low (L) 8 week weight, and one maintained as an unselected control (C). After 25 generations 8 week weights were 41.2g, 30.6 g and 20.5g for the H, C and L lines. Mice were sampled from the lines and analysed for fat, protein, ash and water at generations 14 and 25. Apart from fat in the H line, there was little alteration due to selection in the relationships between individual body components and total body weight. In the H line, the contribution of fat to body weight gain was considerably increased. Although leaner than the C and L mice at low body weights, H line mice rapidly became fatter with increasing body weight. Selection appeared to reduce the body weight at which fat was deposited at its maximum rate in the H line. The H and C lines were equally fat at body weights of 29.0 g and 21.6 g at generations 14 and 25 respectively. Body weights at points of inflection of the growth curves of the H, C and L lines at generation 25 were 18.3 g, 14.3 g and 12.8 g. The implications of these findings for meat species slaughtered at set weights are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper body mass and body mass in relation to height is analyzed, based on a cross-sectional sample of 21,648 boys and men, and 21,391 girls and women living in villages, towns, and cities in all new federal states of Germany. The sample is stratified to sex, age, territory and size of the settlement. Weight to height regression lines are compared to the results of weight categories by height. The results of the normal weight categories are compared to the optimal weights of Broca, Ott, and M?hr as well as to the standard weights of the US-population. It is pointed out that body mass does not only depend on age and type of body shape during growth age, but also during adulthood. Curves of normal weight are given for children and adolescents in relation to their sex, age, height, and type of body shape. The median values of weight are published as tables for adults.  相似文献

Body weight gain and shank-toe growth during a 26-day treatment period following hypophysectomy were 55 and 46%, respectively, of control values, but the body weight gain was unaffected and bone growth only slightly reduced when the hypophysectomized chickens were fed a low dose of corticosterone (5 ppm). Bovine growth hormone (0.5 mg GH/kg body wt/day for 18 days) enhanced body weight gain and shank-toe length increase (an estimate of bone growth) by 46 and 33%, respectively, compared to the growth of hypophysectomized chickens receiving only corticosterone. These same endpoints were increased approximately 24% after ovine growth hormone treatment in hypophysectomized chickens not receiving corticosterone. Body weight gain during 18 days of treatment with bovine prolactin (0.5 mg PRL/kg/day) was 27% greater than the value for corticosterone-treated hypophysectomized chickens, but bone growth was unaffected. The mammalian GH preparations increased heart weight of the hypophysectomized chickens (25-29%), but pectoralis muscle weight was unaffected. GH treatment enhanced thymal weights by 71% in corticosterone-treated hypophysectomized chickens, and by 93% in hypophysectomized animals not receiving corticosterone. GH had no significant effect on bursal weights, and PRL had no effect on either of these lymphoid organ weights in corticosterone-treated hypophysectomized chickens. GH increased liver and adipose tissue weights considerably more than the large increases that followed treatment of hypophysectomized chickens with corticosterone alone (69 and 126% greater, respectively), but had no effect on these endpoints in hypophysectomized chickens not receiving corticosterone. PRL also greatly increased liver and adipose tissue weights in corticosterone-treated hypophysectomized chickens (79 and 75%, respectively). These results provide evidence that mammalian GH enhances body weight gain, bone growth, and the growth of several organs in the hypophysectomized chicken. Mammalian PRL increased body weight gain, liver weight, and adipose tissue weight in corticosterone-treated hypophysectomized chickens, but did not influence bone growth or the weights of the heart, pectoralis, thymi, or bursa.  相似文献
