The effect of unilateral hindlimb immobilization and subsequent free remobilization on bone tissue in rats was examined. Right hindlimb of intensively growing (G), young adult (Y) and adult (A) male rats was immobilized by taping for two weeks. Bone tissue was investigated post mortem in experimental and age-matched control rats, either directly after immobilization (Imm) or after two or four weeks of remobilization (Re2, Re4). Apparent density (d(app)) and mineralization (Min) were estimated in femora and pelvis. The mechanical state of bone tissue in femora was evaluated using an ultrasonic method. Additionally, activity of serum alkaline phosphatase, and serum calcium and phosphorus were measured in each group. Min and d(app) in Imm bones were changed in G rats, while in Y and A only d(app) in Imm femora was affected. Velocity of ultrasound was significantly lower in immobilized femora in each age group, indicating decreased elasticity of bone tissue. The differences between immobilized and control limbs were still significant in Re2 and Re4 groups in G rats. In Y rats the differences between experimental and control bones increased during remobilization. It is concluded that deterioration of bone initiated during two weeks of unloading, last within at least four weeks of free remobilization, despite restoration of normal activity.  相似文献

Attraction to sexually mature males and the immobilization response were evaluated after postpubertal estrogen treatment of ovariectomized females and of males castrated within 48 hr after birth or at 4 or 8 months of age. The time spent in the end of an evaluation pen which housed a mature intact male, the proportion of animals that showed the immobilization response, and the latency to onset and the duration of this response were similar in ovariectomized females and males castrated within 48 hr after birth. These two groups spent more time in the male end of the evaluation pen as opposed to the opposite end which housed an ovariectomized female, showed a shorter latency to the onset of the immobilization response, and expressed this response for a greater number of days than males castrated either at 4 or 8 months of age. Males castrated at 4 or 8 months did not show a strong preference for either a mature male or an ovariectomized female. The immobilization response in estrogen-treated males castrated at 4 or 8 months of age diminished as these animals became older. On the basis of the observations made in this study, attraction to a mature, intact male is a sexually dimorphic behavioral trait in pigs, and defeminization of this trait in male pigs is associated with the pubertal increase in testicular steroid secretion. Presently, pigs are the only mammalian species in which a role has been identified for pubertal, testicular steroid secretion in the defeminization process.  相似文献

A comprehensive study (bone roentgenography, arteriography, gross dissection, microscopy of the long bones, and biochemical study of proteoglycan-aggregates in the hyaline cartilage) of the lower limbs in a full-term stillborn with the campomelic syndrome was performed. Hyaline cartilage immaturity of the long bones, dysplasia of growth plates, focal shaft dysplasia, and a defective length of the posterior femur and crus muscles were revealed. The genesis of the bowing and shortening of the long bones in the lower limbs is discussed.  相似文献

To examine whether the bone mineral density (BMD) decreases uniformly with aging in any spongy bones, the authors investigated age-related changes of BMD in the calcaneus, talus, and scaphoid bone. After the ordinary dissection by medical students was finished, calcanei, tali, and scaphoid bones were resected from the subjects, and BMDs were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Their BMDs seemed to decrease gradually with aging in the calcanei, tali, and scaphoid bones. It was found that there were statistically significant relationships between age and BMD in the men’s and women’s scaphoid bones, women’s tali, and women’s calcanei, but not in the men’s tali and calcanei. It should be noted that there were significant relationships between age and BMD in both men’s and women’s scaphoid bones. In regard to relationship in BMD between the bones of the upper and lower limbs in individuals, it was found that the relationship between the calcaneus and talus was higher than that between the calcaneus and scaphoid bone. This suggests that there is a higher relationship in BMD between the two tarsal bones compared with that between the tarsal and carpal bones.  相似文献

This study assesses chronological age of immature individuals from the degree of ossification evident in the foot skeleton. We considered all tarsal and ray bones in various combinations to determine the most sensitive indicators of chronological age. Skeletal maturity was rated according to a subjective but simple scoring system applied to radiographs of normal feet of children of known chronological age. Scales for assessing the primary center of ossification, secondary center of ossification, and state of fusion are defined. In general, as expected, females show earlier onset of skeletal maturity than males; in particular, females in our sample are skeletally mature in most elements beginning 48 months prior to the earliest incidence of skeletal maturity in males for the same bones. Females in our sample show a marked tendency toward skeletal maturity of all elements by 150 months of age, while males do not show the same tendency until approximately 200 months of age. In general within each sex, consecutive states of fusion show broad overlap in range of chronological age within each bone. Combining scores from several different bones enables a reasonable estimate of potential age in a test application of the model.  相似文献

The behavior of Papio hamadryas pubertal males under the immobilizational stress conditions has been studied. It has been established that this very type of stress appeared to be a powerful irritant for the individuals of this species and age leading them into the depression state. The process of normalization of behavior after the 2-hour immobilization lasted for about 72 h. The main consequences of the stress were the violation of locomotion, the reception by individuals of unnatural postures, the trembling of limbs and the violation of coordination. The reaction of stress was greatly influenced by the position of individual in the hierarchic system. The dominant (alpha) and the most subdominant (z) males bore the stress easier. The intensification of food activity was marked within the male z. In certain period after the immobilization the tendency of the growth of friendly contacts between the individuals was found. The frequency of aggressive behavior after the stress lowered. The violation of manipulation activity was also marked. These regularities are of great importance for the reconstruction of group social behavior models of protohominid's societies.  相似文献

In recent years some buffalo farms in Campania have reported the birth of calves with limb malformation, especially with transversal hemimelia. We investigated 20 Mediterranean Italian buffaloes (8 males and 12 females) from one day to six months of age, of which 10 were affected by transversal hemimelia (group 1) and 10 were healthy controls (group 2). The following clinical and radiological patterns were observed in the malformed animals: hind limbs amputated, the right amputated off the second tarsus bones and the left amputated off the proximal epiphysis metatarsus, and the right thoracic limb hypoplasic (1 female); left hind limb amputated off the proximal epiphysis metatarsus (2 females and 1 male); left hind limb amputated off the third tarsus bones (1 female); left hind limb amputated off the tibia (1 female and 1 male); left hind limb amputated off the distal epiphysis metatarsus (1 female); left hind limb amputated off the first phalanx (1 male); right hind limb amputated off the proximal epiphysis metatarsus (1 male). In their malformed limbs all the animals presented more or less developed outlines of claws. The mean rate of SCE/cell in animals with transversal hemimelia was 8.80 +/- 3.19, that of the controls 6.61 +/- 2.73. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001).  相似文献

Stature (height) is an important factor in establishing the identity of a person in the living as well as in the skeletonized state. When stature is estimated from the bones of the limbs, regression equations, which estimate the ratios of the lengths of bones to the height of the individual, are generated. The majority of bones that were used previously were the long bones. The calcaneus was used for estimating stature only in American whites and blacks (Holland [1995] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 96:315-320). The regression equations that he generated were found to be useful for stature estimation in these population groups. Since the calcaneus has not been used for the same purpose in South Africa, the aim of this study was to derive regression equations that will allow this bone to be used for stature estimation in South African blacks. In total, 116 complete skeletons (60 males and 56 females) were selected from the Raymond A. Dart Collection of Human Skeletons, School of Anatomical Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa). The skeletal heights of these sets of skeletons were calculated using the anatomical method of Fully ([1956] Ann. Med. Leg. 35:266-273). Nine parameters of the calcaneus were measured and matched against skeletal heights, using univariate and multivariate regression methods. Regression equations were obtained for estimation of the stature of the South African black population from the calcaneus. The standard error of estimate that was obtained with univariate regression analysis was higher than the corresponding values using multivariate regression analysis. In both cases, the standard errors of estimate compared well with the values obtained for fragmentary long bones by previous authors.  相似文献

本文报道了在安徽省宿县地区发现的一个Schmid型干骺端软骨发育不良症家族。调查涉及五代,患者10人(6男,4女),现存活6例(4男,2女),经家谱分析,符合常染色体显性遗传。患者智力、外貌、头颅、脊椎均正常,但四肢短小,指(趾)粗短,弓形腿,髋内翻,步态摇摆。男性患者的腕、踩等关节有明显畸型;而在这些部位,女性患者无明显畸型,其它症状也较男性患者为轻,说明男女患者的表现度明显不同。  相似文献

The giant deer, Megaloceros giganteus , is best known from its fossil occurrences in Ireland around 11 000 years ago, but has a history across Europe and Western Asia spanning 300 000–400 000 years. This paper reports a biometric study of variation and evolution in the giant deer through its history. Most early populations were as large in body size as the Irish sample, but some were distincdy smaller and others had markedly shorter limbs. Thickened skull and mandibular bones, especially marked in males, are constant throughout die species' history. Some earlier populations had anders which were relatively smaller, more upright and differing in other details from the celebrated Irish specimens. Observed variation in body and antler form is discussed in terms of changing palaeoenvironments. Interpretation of the fighting or display roles of M. giganteus antlers needs to take account of their differing forms through time.  相似文献

The limbs of the three-toed skink Chalcides chalcides are reduced to such a degree that the three digits are too small for skeletochronology. This study, performed on animals collected near Isernia (central Italy), describes the structure of the caudal vertebrae, which are often naturally lost due to autotomy, in order to determine whether they can be used to obtain data on age and growth with skeletochronological techniques. The reliability of the autotomous caudal vertebrae for skeletochronology was verified by performing skeletochronological analyses also on femora. Although the identification of the lines of arrested growth (LAGs) was easier in femora than in autotomous caudal vertebrae, a high correspondence of the LAG count between the two bones was observed. Females were larger and lived longer than males (4 and 3 years, respectively). For both sexes, the snout vent length (SVL) was significantly correlated with age. For both sexes, sexual maturity was attained after two hibernations from birth, beginning at the 20th month of age. At first reproduction, males had an SVL of 91–106 mm and females one of 111–150 mm. Von Bertalanffy growth curves of age versus SVL showed that females had slower growth rates than males for attaining their asymptotic SVL (females: 197 mm; males: 143 mm). The results provide the first data on age and growth of C. chalcide, and show that autotomous caudal vertebrae are reliable alternatives for obtaining such data for limb-reduced reptiles, avoiding the need to sacrifice or disable animals, as occurs when long bones are used.  相似文献

Male genitalia evolve rapidly, probably as a result of sexual selection. Whether this pattern extends to the internal infrastructure that influences genital movements remains unknown. Cetaceans (whales and dolphins) offer a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis: since evolving from land‐dwelling ancestors, they lost external hind limbs and evolved a highly reduced pelvis that seems to serve no other function except to anchor muscles that maneuver the penis. Here, we create a novel morphometric pipeline to analyze the size and shape evolution of pelvic bones from 130 individuals (29 species) in the context of inferred mating system. We present two main findings: (1) males from species with relatively intense sexual selection (inferred by relative testes size) tend to evolve larger penises and pelvic bones compared to their body length, and (2) pelvic bone shape has diverged more in species pairs that have diverged in inferred mating system. Neither pattern was observed in the anterior‐most pair of vertebral ribs, which served as a negative control. This study provides evidence that sexual selection can affect internal anatomy that controls male genitalia. These important functions may explain why cetacean pelvic bones have not been lost through evolutionary time.  相似文献

Immobilization induces abnormal bone metabolism and severe decalcification of bone. To investigate the effect of middle-term immobilization on bone metabolism, we studied 10 young healthy males and females during bed rest for 20 days. Bone mineral density (BMD) rapidly decreased in both lumbar and metacarpal bones. No bone showed consistent BMD alterations, partial increase and partial decrease, and both lumbar and metacarpal bone showed similar rapid BMD change. Urinary excretion of pyridinoline tended to slightly increase by day 10, and to decline by day 20 (mean +/-SE: 34.2 +/-7.4, 26.3+/-4.6 nmol day-1, respectively). Neither alkaline phosphatase (isoform III) nor tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, changed, suggesting that in the early stage of immobilization bone matrix in some part might increase or be resorbed without any activation of osteoblast or osteoclast, resulting in rapid calcification or decalcification, respectively.  相似文献

2009-2013年测量了城市汉族成人10451例(男性5048例,女性5403例)的16项指标值,研究了不同纬度地区汉族城市成人的瘦体质量、脂肪质量值的变化规律。研究发现:1)31个族群脂肪质量、瘦体质量均数彼此相差较大,脂肪质量最大值男性、女性均为保定汉族;最小值男性为宜春汉族、女性为宁乡汉族。瘦体质量最大值男性为呼兰汉族、女性为南阳汉族;最小值男性为赣州汉族,女性为琼海汉族。2)各族群女性脂肪质量值均大于男性,而瘦体质量值均小于男性。3)胸部、臀部(女性还有腹部)围度的发育以及全身的皮下脂肪发育水平影响着城市汉族脂肪质量的发育水平,躯干与下肢围度(男性还有上肢骨骼)发育情况影响着城市汉族人的瘦体质量发育水平。4)随纬度的增加,即从中国的南方到北方,城市汉族人的体质量、脂肪质量、瘦体质量均呈线性增大。脂肪质量、瘦体质量随纬度增加而增大共同引起了体质量规律性的变化。  相似文献

Nonspecific collagenolytic activity was studied in rat bones after immobilization. The left hind limb was immobilized by sectioning the sciatic nerve. Enzyme activity was determined by using synthetic pentapeptide substrate (Pz-Pro-Leu-Gly-Pro-D-Arg). After immobilization the activity of nonspecific collagenase increased and reached its maximum on the third day after the operation. The activity was decreased after one week and attained levels of control bones three weeks after sciatic nerve section.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate age- and sex-related changes in the size and shape of long hand bones in a large Chuvashian cohort using cross-sectional and longitudinal study designs. The data were gathered in 1994 (557 individuals) and 2002 (513 individuals). The latter sample included 260 individuals that were studied only during the second expedition, and 253 individuals who were previously investigated in 1994. Statistical analyses included a maximum likelihood-based model-fitting technique and a t-test comparison. We found evidence for secular trend of hand bone size in both males and females within the Chuvashian population. In males, the length and total area of the long hand bones were greater in younger individuals, but mid-shaft bone width remained almost the same in individuals born at different periods of the last century. In females, the length of the hand bones and total bone area remained unchanged in women born after 1937. However, bone mid-shaft width gradually decreased in women born after 1940. Therefore, we argue that, at least within the Chuvashian population, there is a secular trend towards a more gracile appendicular skeleton in both males and females.  相似文献

Tetrapod limbs have been used as a model system to investigate how selective pressures and constraints shape morphological evolution. Anurans have had many independent transitions to various microhabitats, allowing us to dissect how these factors influence limb morphology. Furthermore, anurans provide a unique system to test the generality of developmental constraints proposed in mammals, namely that later-developing limb bones are under less constraint and show more variation. We used microcomputed tomography scans of 236 species from 52 of 55 families, geometric morphometrics, and modern phylogenetic comparative methods to examine how limb bones are related to microhabitat, phylogeny, allometry, and developmental timing. Although there was significant phylogenetic signal, anuran limb shape showed a relationship with microhabitat and to a lesser extent, body size. We found that distal bones had higher evolutionary rates than proximal bones, providing evidence that developmental constraints are reduced in later-developing bones. Distal bones also showed increased selection related to allometry and microhabitat, providing an additional explanation for higher evolutionary rates. By looking at the evolution of limb shape across a diverse clade, we demonstrated that multiple factors have shaped anuran limbs and that greater evolutionary lability in later-developing limb bones is likely a general trend among tetrapods.  相似文献

The effect of 3 wk of splintage of a single hindlimb on the midarea and mineral content of both tibial metaphyses was assessed immediately after splint removal and after 1 mo of mobilization in 12-wk-old Sprague-Dawley rats. Immobilization reduced tibial metaphyseal bone mineral density (BMD) in immobilized limbs compared with "free" limbs of splinted animals and with controls. These changes persisted and were accentuated by relatively greater increases in tibial metaphyseal BMDs of unsplinted (control) animals after 7 wk. Immediately after splintage, tibial metaphyseal areas and total mineral contents of both hindlimbs of splinted animals were reduced compared with those of unsplinted animals. However, the relationship between mineralization and area differed between the free and immobilized limbs of splinted animals. The breaking strain and the breaking energy of immobilized and free femurs of splinted animals were impaired 4 wk after the removal of the splint. This impairment was correlated with an effect of splintage on femoral size with some additional local effect from immobilization. Thus osteoporotic changes consequent on immobilization include both local effects on mineralization and general effects on growth, which may separately influence the elastic properties of bone.  相似文献

A Roman skeleton (T.130) from the roman necropolis of Casalecchio di Reno has been studied in order to understand if the hypothesis of crutch use, suggested by the severe articular degeneration at the hip joint that caused evident reduction of his locomotory possibilities, could be supported by the morphological alterations of other bones and joints. The pathological changes and muscular development of the upper limbs and shoulder girdle bones suggest that these parts were submitted to a great mechanical stress. The observations are consistent with the hypothesis of crutch use that would have involved a new weight-bearing function of the upper limbs in order to help locomotion, even though it is difficult to assess the number and type of the crutches. The comparison with other possible cases of crutch use reported in literature gives an additional support to the interpretation of the findings.  相似文献

The general aspect of the network of Haversian canals was studied on tangential and radial sections from the diaphysary compact bone of the human long bones. The network-like aspect was much varied even in the same bone and at the same level from which the samples were obtained. No obvious differences were found between the studied bones or between the two limbs. Certain peculiarities of the canal system were noticed as regards the trajectory of canals, disposition and number of anastomoses, and the network aspect, depending on the region of the diaphysis, but especially on the depth.  相似文献
