Summary Attempts to measure the nesting density or territory size of bald eagles led to a fundamental difficulty, inherent in all such measurements on organisms which are distributed along an irregular boundary, such as a coastline. The length of such a boundary is not a meaningful measure, and neither can a meaningful area be associated with each nest. Mandelbrot's (1983) fractal geometry applies to the problem, but has not previously supplied practical units of measurement for fractals such as coastlines or rugged surfaces. A practical method is given for measuring the extent of such fractals, introducing a unit of variable dimension, the metron, which includes the existing SI units of length, area and volume as special cases. A linear measure, the spacing allows densities on fractals of different dimensions to be compared directly. The method is applied to the distribution of bald eagle nests along the coastlines of two islands in the Aleutians, and an extension of the method to handle distributions on mountainsides and island surfaces is indicated.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of cholinergic neurons in the urinary tract and male genital organs of the cat was studied by a histochemical method for acetylcholinesterase. In addition to cell clusters in autonomic ganglia (intraganglionic cells), isolated extraganglionic cholinergic cells were found within the innervated tissues, usually in association with nerve trunks and blood vessels. Smaller neural cells with multiple axonal processes, identical to Cajal's interstitial cells, were found in the meshes of the terminal nerve plexus in smooth muscle, lamina propria and vascular wall.It is concluded that peripheral cholinergic neurons, like their adrenergic analogues, are arranged as a short intraganglionic, a shorter extraganglionic, and a terminal system of neurons.Supported in part by grants 10465 and 11285 from the USPHS and the Henry C. An experimental analysis is presented concerning the effect on relative light absorption by the two photosystems caused by (a) a highly light scattering environment (the detour effect) and (b) light filtration across successive chloroplast layers (the light attenuation effect). Both suspensions of isolated chloroplasts and leaves were employed.It is concluded that within a single spinach leaf these phenomena are likely to lead to only rather small increases in relative photosystem I absorption and activity with respect to photosystem II and will thus not exert a significant effect on non cyclic electron transport. On the contrary when light is filtrated across successive vegetation layers (shade light) significant increases in the relative PSI absorption and activity may be encountered.It is determined that the detour effect in mature leaves from a variety of plants increases overall photosynthetically useful light absorption by 35–40%.Abbreviations FM maximal fluorescence - LHCP2 light-harvesting chlorophyl a/b protein complex II - QA-primary quinone acceptor of photosystem II  相似文献

Summary Analysis of 62 mature Norway spruce (Picea abies provenance Viborg) trees growing in a Danish plantation was undertaken along with analysis of their nutrient contents (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, B and Na), in each of the three youngest needle age classes, from branches of four exposure directions near the tree top. The aim was to investigate if one among the studied possible predisposing factors was also a triggering factor in the 1989 outbreak of the Red Norway spruce decline in Denmark. Neither nutrient imbalance or deficiency, nor excessive N-deposition or salt-stress were indicated as triggering factors in 1989. The Red syndrome, noticeable for the bright red colour of the current-year needles, was found to be an extension of the European type Novel Decline. Red syndrome is similar to previously reported phenomena of top-dying and sub top-dying, in that it had fewer needle age classes and significantly higher contents of mobile cations (and Ca) in the younger needle classes. Tree ring analysis suggested that the Red syndrome was initiated in the early 1980s, when the trees experienced adverse climatic conditions. Because of this long-term development of the Red Norway spruce decline syndrome, it is concluded that a triggering factor is of minor importance relative to the multitude of predisposing factors.  相似文献

Conclusions An even broader theoretical conclusion is in order. The term modernization has been enshrined in the value-free literature on development which the Western academy has created and supported. But the experience of Brasov, a local manifestation of Romanian development, makes it clear that modernization is by no means confined to Western assumptions, and that it always occurs in specific ways depending on the social situation of the society undergoing change, and on the political nature of the program being adopted. In short, socialist modernization in Romania is not parallel to modernization under capitalist auspices in analogous areas.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung In zunehmendem Maße werden anisoploideBeta-Rübensorten angebaut, deren zytologische Kontrolle zwecks Feststellung der Genomstufenprozentanteile recht arbeitszeitaufwendig ist. Übereinstimmend mit polnischen Autoren wurde festgestellt, daß die Hypokotylfarbe ein geeigneter Markierungsfaktor für die einzelnen Genomstufen darstellt. Kreuzt man tetraploide Pflanzen, die ein grünes Hypokotyl besitzen, mit diploiden Pflanzen, die ein rosa Hypokotyl aufweisen, so erhält man von dem tetraploiden Partner tetraploide grüne und triploide hellbraune, von dem diploiden Partner diploide rosa und triploide hellbraune Nachkommenschaften. Die in bezug auf die Hypokotylfarbe heterozygoten Pflanzen kann man demnach von den homozygot grünen und homozygot rosa Individuen unterscheiden. Die Kreuzung diploid grünxtetraploid rosa ist für diese Zwecke nicht brauchbar, da sich die triploiden Heterozygoten mit einem grünen und zwei rosa Allelen in der Hypokotylfarbe nicht deutlich von den homozygoten rosa Pflanzen abheben. Auf die Bedeutung dieser Markierungsmöglichkeit für bestimmte Forschungsprobleme, die Züchtung und die Saatgutkontrolle wird hingewiesen.  相似文献

This paper defines a four-tiered, hierarchical system for classifying subsistence production types in Nepal and uses the system to describe the subsistence communities of central Nepal. The system first divides Nepal into a grid of homogenous parts or cells, second, it divides, the cells into ridge-valley slope sequences, third, defines production types for the ridge-valley slope sequences, and, finally, distinguishes local variants of the production types. After describing these tiers, I apply these categories to the northern portions of the central and western development regions where I have done research. I then define how representatives of Nepal as a whole are the production types defined for the central and western development regions. Finally, the paper locates some completed studies within its framework.  相似文献

Summary HTC cells are able to convert -linolenic acid into higher homologs by desaturating and elongating reactions. When the cells were cultured in a Krebs Ringer bicarbonate solution (fasted cells) a decrease in both biosynthetic reactions took place. Refeeding the cells with Swim's 77 medium without glucose enhanced the biosynthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids from -linolenic acid family, but when glucose was added to the medium, -linolenic acid was preferably elongated rather than converted into eicose-pentaenoic acid.The ultrastructural study revealed HTC cells with a simple cytoplasmic organization, showing little evidence of their origin from hepatocytes. The cells cultured in a complete medium appeared well preserved and were similar to those fasted for 12 hours and refed for another 12 hours using Swim's 77 medium without serum. The amount of glucose in the medium plays a role in preserving the cell structure. This effect does not occur if glucose is added in the absence of aminoacids and vitamins.  相似文献

Myelin from adult rat brains was separated on a discontinuous sucrose gradient into three subfractions. Analysis of light, heavy and membrane fraction lipid classes was performed by HPTLC and densitometry while fatty acid composition was determinated by GLC. The more interesting results observed are: i) the membrane fraction resembles in its lipid and fatty acid composition other cell membranes (particulary oligodentrocytes); ii) light and heavy myelin are quite similar between them but the former has a higher content of sphingomyelin, a lower hydroxy/nohhydroxy cerebrosides ratio and a lower content of monoenoic fatty acids than the heavy subfraction. The results obtained could explain the different structures observed in each myelin subfraction since fatty acid composition, hydroxy fatty acids, sphingomyelin and cholesterol play a key role in the stability and structure of membranes.  相似文献

Specific binding of [3H]muscimol (11.5 nM), related to GABA receptors, occurred in subcellular particles prepared from 4-, 8-, and 12-day cultures of embryonic (14-to 15-day-old) mouse cerebrum, but not to particles prepared from 20-to 45-day cultures. Phase-contrast microscopy revealed that the presence of neuronal elements (neuroblasts, neurites) paralleled the binding of [3H]muscimol. The effects of daminozide (butanedioic acid-2,2-dimethylhydrazide) on ethylene synthesis by apple fruits were investigated. The objective was to determine the effects of postharvest applications as compared to the standard application of diaminozide in the orchard. Immersion in a solution containing 4.25 g L–1 active ingredient for 5 min delayed the rise in ethylene production in individual Cox apples at 15°C by about 2 days, whereas orchard application of 0.85 g L–1 caused delays of about 3 days. Both modes of application depressed the maximal rate of ethylene production attained by ripe apples by about 30%. Daminozide did not affect the stimulation of respiration by ethylene treatment of Gloster apples, but it delayed the increase in ethylene synthesis. Daminozide applied immediately after harvest delayed the rise in ethylene synthesis in Golden Delicious held at 15°C, but it was less effective when applied 48 h after harvest or when apples were held at 5°C. Exposure to 1–2 l L–1 ethylene for 48 h was less effective in promoting the rise in ethylene in daminozidetreated Cox and Gloster apples than in untreated fruit. High (100–1000 l L–1) concentrations of ethylene more or less overcame the daminozide effect. Apples absorbed about 40% of surface-applied [14C]daminozide in 48 h, but more than 90% of the radioactivity in the fruit was recovered from the peel and outer 1 cm of the cortex. Summary Two-dimensional-electrophoretic analysis has been applied to non-neoplastic mammary epithelium from eight healthy women, tumor tissue from eight diploid mammary adenocarcinomas, and tumor tissue from eight aneuploid mammary adenocarcinomas. Compared with non-neoplastic mammary epithelium, a slight numerical net increase of the protein spots was detected in diploid tumors and a marked increase in aneuploid tumors. Two prominent spots were present in all 16 malignant tissues examined and absent in all eight non-neoplastic tissues (silver staining method).The results suggest that a difference in the composition of cellular proteins exists both between non-neoplastic mammary cells and malignant tumor cells, and between diploid and aneuploid tumors.In honour of Prof. P. von Duijn  相似文献

The present study was conducted to evaluate a statement in ancient yoga texts that suggests that a combination of both calming and stimulating measures may be especially helpful in reaching a state of mental equilibrium. Two yoga practices, one combining calming and stimulating measures (cyclic meditation) and the other, a calming technique (shavasan), were compared. The oxygen consumption, breath rate, and breath volume of 40 male volunteers (group mean ± SD, 27.0 ± 5.7 years) were assessed before and after sessions of cyclic meditation (CM) and before and after sessions of shavasan (SH). The 2 sessions (CM, SH) were 1 day apart. Cyclic meditation includes the practice of yoga postures interspersed with periods of supine relaxation. During SH the subject lies in a supine position throughout the practice. There was a significant decrease in the amount of oxygen consumed and in breath rate and an increase in breath volume after both types of sessions (2-factor ANOVA, paired t test). However, the magnitude of change on all 3 measures was greater after CM: (1) Oxygen consumption decreased 32.1% after CM compared with 10.1% after SH; (2) breath rate decreased 18.0% after CM and 15.2% after SH; and (3) breath volume increased 28.8% after CM and 15.9% after SH. These results support the idea that a combination of yoga postures interspersed with relaxation reduces arousal more than relaxation alone does.  相似文献

The plant growth substance N6-(2-isopentenyl) adenine (i6Ade) significantly inhibits the rates of ethanol oxidation and acetaldehyde reduction in vitro by cell-free extracts of Zymomonas mobilis and of an Escherichia coli recombinant strain, containing the Z. mobilis adhB gene. The two-substrate kinetics of ethanol oxidation (forward) is affected by increasing values of dissociation constants for coenzyme and coenzyme —enzyme complexes in the presence of i6Ade, whereas the reaction maximum velocity (V m) remains unchanged and reflects the competitive type of inhibition. Changes of the kinetic constants of acetaldehyde reduction (back) are similar, except the increasing value of V m and correspond to the CIS (competitive inhibition and stimulation) type of inhibition. The estimated values of inhibition constants of the forward and back reactions are 0.39 ± 0.05 mM and 0.19 ± 0.06 mM, respectively.  相似文献

Thirty-two West African dwarf goats were exposed to temperature treatments: 20, 25, 30, 35, 35, 35, 30, 25, 20°C each lasting three days.Sixteen goats were kept in individual pens (I), the others in two group pens (G). Heat production (HP) and activity were recorded during 48 hours in each temperature treatment.Mean HP and ME intake were similar for G and I animals, but I animals had lower values than G animals at low chamber temperatures and higher values than G animals at high temperatures. Upper critical temperature was between 25°C and 30°C under an increasing T and between 30 and 35°C under a decreasing T. Adaptation of heat production and ME intake to a change in temperature of 5°C required at least six and possibly more than nine days.Diurnal variation in HP was large, up to 44% between extremes. This was largely due to variation in activity.  相似文献

A contextualizing image (CI) is a powerful central image of a dream which appears to contextualize (provide a picture-context for) the dreamer's emotion. For instance, dreamers who have experienced any serious traumatic event sometimes dream, I was overwhelmed by a tidal wave. This appears to picture their feeling of terror and/or vulnerability.A scoring system for CIs is examined here and is applied to dreams and daydreams supplied by 40 students. Two raters scoring dreams on a blind basis showed good inter-rater reliability. Recent dreams were shown to have more as well as more intense CIs than recent daydreams; likewise, dreams that stand out had more intense CIs than daydreams that stand out. Students with thin boundaries had more and more intense CIs than students with thick boundaries in their recent dreams and nightmare, but not so clearly in dreams and nightmares that stand out. The emotions judged as contextualized by the powerful images tended towards fear/terror and helplessness/vulnerability in dreams (especially in dreams that stand out) whereas emotions contextualized by images in daydreams showed a wide range with no clusters.  相似文献

Summary Four types of striated muscle fibers with distinctive ultrastructure were defined in the Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa, L.): white, intermediate, and red fibers of m. parietalis, and red fibers of m. craniovelaris.White fibers are thick, contain very few mitochondria and fat vacuoles, and possess distinct and separate myofibrils with thin Z-disks and distinct M-lines. Intermediate fibers are thinner, possess largely similar myofibrils that often are even better separated due to a higher content of fat vacuoles and especially mitochondria and glycogen granules. Red fibers of m. parietalis contain large amounts of mitochondria, fat vacuoles, and glycogen granules. Their myofibrils possess M-lines, and although branching more, the myofibrils of red fibers conform with a Fibrillenstruktur pattern like those of white and intermediate fibers. Red fibers of m. craniovelaris are very thin, possess many smaller fat vacuoles, and large amounts of mitochondria and glycogen granules. The myofibrils are significantly thinner than in m. parietalis fibers, run as quite independent well separated units, possess thicker Z-disks, and lack M-lines. Various philosophers and evolutionary biologists have recently defended the thesis that species are individuals rather than sets. A decade of debates, however, did not suffice to settle the matter. Conceptual analysis shows that many of the key terms involved (individuation, evolutionary species, spatiotemporal restrictedness, individual) are ambiguous. Current disagreements should dissolve once this is recognized. Explication of the concepts involved leads to new programs for philosophical research. It could also help biology by showing how extant controversies concerning evolution may have conceptual rather than factual roots.  相似文献

A continuous fermentation model taking into account the culture memory is used for a state estimation design. The influence of the culture memory on the process dynamics is accounted for by a time delay parameter. The proposed procedure of on-line state estimation in the case when the delay has a constant value is based on the extended Kalman observer. The case when the delay parameter is evaluated on-line is also considered. An adaptive state and parameter algorithm on the base of the extended Kalman filter is proposed. Nitrogen fixation of the Methanosarcina barkeri strains Fusaro (DSM 804) and 227 (DSM 1538) was found to be dependent on the presence of vanadium or molybdenum whereby molybdenum (added as Na2-molybdate) was preferred to vanadium (added as VCl3). Strain 227 showed less pronounced effects on diazotrophic growth with respect to vanadium and molybdenum. Rhenium (ReCl3) or tungsten (Na2-tungstate) could not replace vanadium or molybdenum. The optimum concentrations were found to be 2M for vanadium and 5M for molybdenum (strain Fusaro). This Mo optimum of methanogenesis was 10-fold higher with N2 than with NH4Cl as nitrogen source. A vanadium requirement with NH4Cl could not be detected. No interferences were observed if molybdenum and vanadium were added simultaneously under diazotrophic conditions. Growth yields were smallest for strain 227 grown diazotrophically ( =0.6g dw/mol in the presence of vanadium and =0.9g dw/mol in the presence of molybdenum), obviously higher for strain Fusaro grown diazotrophically ( =1.15g dw/mol in the presence of V and =1.4g dw/mol with Mo) and highest if M. barkeri was grown on NH4Cl as N-source ( =3.4g dw/mol with Mo, strain Fusaro).  相似文献
