Cranial vault and brain deformities in individuals with craniosynostosis are thought to result, in part, from changes in intracranial pressure, but clinical findings are still inconclusive. The present study describes intracranial pressure changes in a rabbit model with naturally occurring, uncorrected coronal suture synostosis. Longitudinal and cross-sectional intracranial pressure data were collected from 241 New Zealand White rabbits, divided into four groups: normal controls (n = 81); rabbits with delayed-onset coronal suture synostosis (n = 78); rabbits with early-onset unilateral coronal suture synostosis (n = 32); and rabbits with early-onset bilateral coronal suture synostosis (n = 50). Epidural intracranial pressure measurements were obtained at 10, 25, 42, and 84 days of age using a NeuroMonitor microsensor transducer. Normal rabbits and rabbits with delayed-onset coronal suture and early-onset unilateral coronal suture synostosis showed a similar oscillating pattern of age-related changes in normal and head-down intracranial pressure from 10 to 84 days of age. In contrast, rabbits with early-onset bilateral coronal suture synostosis showed markedly elevated normal and head-down intracranial pressure levels from 10 to 25 days and showed a different pattern through 84 days. Results from one-way analysis of variance revealed significant (p < 0.01) group differences only at 25 days of age. Rabbits with early-onset bilateral coronal suture synostosis had significantly (p < 0.05) greater normal and head-down intracranial pressure (by 42 percent) than the other three groups. These results showed differing intracranial pressure compensations in rabbits with uncorrected multiple-suture synostosis compared with normal rabbits or rabbits with uncorrected single-suture synostosis, possibly through progressive cerebral atrophy and decreased intracranial volume, abnormal intracranial vascular patterns and blood volume, and/or differing cranial vault compensatory changes.  相似文献

Echinacea pallida (EPAL), a herbaceous flowering plant with immunomodulatory properties, has been chosen to determine the pre- and post-supplementary effects on the growth performances, bacterial community, blood parameters and immunity of growing rabbits. The same Grimaud does (14-week-old) from the studied in the first part of this study were randomly divided into two groups (n=50/group). The first group was fed a basal diet without supplementation (Control group, C) while the another group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 3 g EPAL/kg diet (Echinacea group, E). From the second parturition, 80 weaned kits (40 from the C does and 40 from the E does) were randomly assigned to four groups of 20 animals each and were fed a growing commercial diet supplemented with or without a 3 g EPAL/kg diet: the CC group (rabbits from the C does fed the control diet), CE group (rabbits from the C does fed the supplemented diet), EC (rabbits from the E does fed the control diet) and EE group (rabbits from the E does fed the supplemented diet). The dietary EPAL treatment did not affect the growth performance. Ten fattening rabbits from each group were selected to evaluate the bacterial community and blood parameters, while the remaining rabbits (n=10/group) were used to study phagocytosis and the humoral immune response. The variability was evaluated from hard faeces at 35, 49 and 89 days, and the caecal content at 89 days. The variability of the bacterial community of the EE group was higher than that of the other groups. The phagocytic activity was higher in the CE and EE groups than in the CC and EC ones (30.9 and 29.7 v. 21.2 and 21.8%; P<0.05), whereas no statistically significant difference was observed for the blood parameters or humoral immune response against vaccination (rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus) at 95 days old which the serum was collected at 88, 102, 109, 116 and 123 days old. In conclusion, no impact of EPAL dietary supplementation has been observed on the growth performances, bacterial community, blood parameters or humoral immune responses in growing rabbits, except for an increase in phagocytic activities.  相似文献

Mandibular dysmorphology in unilateral coronal synostosis has been recognized clinically. In patients with unilateral coronal synostosis, the chin point deviates away from the affected side. To investigate whether this mandibular asymmetry resolves after correction of unilateral coronal synostosis, familial nonsyndromic rabbits were used. Rabbits with unilateral coronal synostosis that underwent "correction" with resection of the affected suture were compared with "uncorrected" rabbits with unilateral coronal synostosis and normal, wild-type rabbits (n = 36; three equal groups of 12). Serial lateral cephalograms obtained at 10, 25, 42, and 84 days showed no asymmetries in wild-type rabbits and progressive asymmetries in the ramal height and mandibular length in uncorrected unilateral coronal synostosis rabbits. However, in corrected unilateral coronal synostosis rabbits, existing asymmetries at 10 and 25 days improved by 42 days and were not seen by maturity, at 84 days. In dry, mature, mandibular specimens, wild-type rabbits showed equal side-to-side measurements and uncorrected unilateral coronal synostosis rabbits showed the following on the affected side: longer ramal height (15 percent), shorter ramal width (13 percent), longer body height (10 percent), and shorter body width (13 percent). By contrast, the corrected unilateral coronal synostosis specimens showed no side-to-side differences in 10 of 11. There were no asymmetries in condylar shape or condylar volume in any of the three groups. Cranial base measurements showed asymmetries of the uncorrected unilateral coronal synostosis specimens that were consistent with an anteriorly positioned glenoid fossa on the affected side. However, only one of 11 corrected unilateral coronal synostosis specimens showed similar cranial base asymmetries. The data showed that mandibular asymmetries in nonsyndromic, familial rabbits with unilateral coronal synostosis are progressive with growth but improve after correction of synostosis.  相似文献

We have investigated the wound-healing effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in combination with human amniotic membrane (HAM) when grafted into full-thickness skin defects of rabbits. Five defects in each of four groups were respectively treated with HAM loaded with autologous MSCs (group A), HAM loaded with allologous MSCs (group B), HAM with injected autologous MSCs (group C), and HAM with injected allologous MSCs (group D). The size of the wounds was calculated for each group at 7, 12, and 15 days after grafting. The wounds were subsequently harvested at 25 days after grafting. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were used to determine the quality of wound healing, as based on the characteristics and amount of granulated tissue in the epidermal and dermal layers. Groups A and B showed the most pronounced effect on wound closure, with statistically significant improvement in wound healing being seen on post-operative days 7, 12, and 15. Although a slight trend toward improved wound healing was seen in group A compared with group B, no statistically significant difference was found at any time point between the two groups. Histological examination of healed wounds from groups A and B showed a thin epidermis with mature differentiation and collagen bundle deposition plus recovered skin appendages in the dermal layer. In contrast, groups C and D showed thickened epidermis with immature epithelial cells and increased fibroblast proliferation with only partially recovered skin appendages in the dermal layer. Thus, the graft of HAM loaded with MSCs played an effective role during the healing of skin defects in rabbits, with no significant difference being observed in wound healing between autologous and allologous MSC transplantation. The role of the cat (Felis domestica) as a definitive host for Sarcocystis cuniculi of European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was confirmed. It was shown that after dosing with sporocysts from cats, rabbits developed sarcocysts and these became infective for cats at not less than 93 days post-infection (p.i.). The earliest infection detected was at 142 days p.i. Infected muscle from an experimental rabbit did not transmit Sarcocystis when fed to other rabbits. Microscopically, sarcocysts in European rabbits (O. cuniculus) were morphologically indistinguishable from those in cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus).  相似文献

Push-pull cannulae were implanted toward the tuberal region of the hypothalamus in ten intact New Zealand male rabbits. In the first experiment, rabbits were perfused at different times after castration: 5-10 days (n = 10), 22-31 days (n = 9) and 50-64 days (n = 8). The release, mean amplitude and mean frequency of luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) signals from 37 perfusions in ten animals were analysed in intact rabbits and at different times after castration. No significant changes in release of LHRH and in amplitude were observed, but the frequency was significantly higher 22-31 days after castration than in intact rabbits (intact: 0.86 +/- 0.12; castrated: 1.20 +/- 0.13 pulses h-1, P < 0.035; n = 9). In Expt 2, testosterone and placebo Silastic capsules were implanted in the castrated rabbits. Perfusions were performed in the following four periods, defined by season and time after testosterone and placebo implants: (i) spring; before implants, (ii) late spring; 0-2 weeks after implants, (iii) summer solstice; 2-4 weeks after implants and (iv) summer; 4-6 weeks after implants. Castrated rabbits were perfused during spring; castrated rabbits with testosterone capsule implants were perfused during late spring, around summer solstice and in summer and castrated rabbits with placebo implants were perfused during periods (iii) and (iv). Castrated animals with placebo implants showed no significant changes in mean LHRH release and amplitude, although the frequency was significantly higher around the summer solstice period than in castrated rabbits perfused in the spring. In castrated rabbits with testosterone implants LHRH release was significantly higher in late spring than around the summer solstice and in the summer. In addition, the concentrations of LHRH in late spring were significantly higher than those of intact and castrated animals. In contrast, mean LHRH amplitude and frequency did not change. Mean amount of LHRH released and amplitude in castrated rabbits with testosterone implants were significantly lower around the summer solstice than in late spring or summer and compared with intact animals around summer solstice and in castrated rabbits in early spring. These data demonstrate that there were no significant changes in the mean amplitude and release of LHRH after castration from 5 and up to 64 days in rabbits with hypothalamic push-pull cannulae, in contrast to the well established dramatic effect of castration on gonadotrophin concentrations. However, there was a small, but significant, increase in the mean frequency of LHRH pulses 22-31 days after castration compared with values from intact rabbits.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

The developmental toxicity of the potent adenosine deaminase (ADA) inhibitor, pentostatin (2'-deoxycoformycin), was investigated in pregnant rats and rabbits administered daily iv doses during organogenesis. Rats received 0, 0.01, 0.10, or 0.75 mg/kg on gestation days 6-15 and rabbits received 0, 0.005, 0.01, or 0.02 mg/kg on gestation days 6-18 and maternal and fetal parameters were evaluated on gestation day 21 (rats) or 30 (rabbits). Live fetuses were examined for external, visceral, and skeletal malformations and variations. In rats, maternal body weight gain and food consumption were significantly suppressed at doses of 0.10 and 0.75 mg/kg during the treatment period but returned to control levels during posttreatment. Increased postimplantation loss and decreased numbers of live fetuses, litter size, and fetal body weight were observed at 0.75 mg/kg. A statistically significant increase in the incidence of vertebral malformations occurred at 0.75 mg/kg. The incidence of certain skeletal variations (extra presacral vertebrae, extra ribs, hypoplastic vertebrae) was also increased at 0.75 mg/kg. Ossification of cervical centra was reduced at 0.75 mg/kg compared with controls. In rabbits, marked maternal toxicity (death, body weight loss, and decreased food consumption) and reproductive toxicity (abortion and premature delivery) occurred in all pentostatin-treated groups. However, there were no significant effects on number of live fetuses, pre- or postimplantation loss, litter size, or fetal body weights in the animals with live litters. There was also no apparent increase in the incidence of malformations or variations in the live fetuses of pentostatin-treated rabbits. Thus, these studies demonstrate developmental toxicity of pentostatin in rats and rabbits, and teratogenicity in rats, at maternally toxic doses.  相似文献

Parasitoid sex ratios can be greatly influenced by mating and dispersal behaviour. Many sex ratio models assume that mating is strictly local (only mated females disperse from the natal patch) and that a single male is sufficient to inseminate all females in a brood. Bethylids (aculeate parasitoids) have been used to test predictions of these models, but less attention has been paid to testing their underlying assumptions. We investigated the timing of eclosion, mating and dispersal in mixed-sex and single-sex broods of the bethylid wasp Goniozus nephantidis. In mixed-sex broods, almost all females mate before dispersal and a single male is sufficient to inseminate virtually all females, even when brood sizes are large. Males disperse from both mixed-sex and all-male broods, but males in all-male broods disperse more slowly. Virgin females disperse from all-female broods, which are common. Virgin females can produce a brood, mate with their own sons and subsequently produce mixed-sex broods, but their success rate is very low. Virgin females could potentially circumvent sex allocation constraints by superparasitizing mixed-sex broods, but when presented with hosts bearing mixed-sex broods they destroy all members of the initial brood before ovipositing. Because of the high prevalence of single-sex broods and dispersal of both sexes, the mating structure of G. nephantidis is unlikely to conform to the assumption of strict local mating.  相似文献

Aspects related to hatching, life time, number of blood meals to molt, mortality, feeding time and postfeed defecation delay for each instar of Meccus phyllosomus, M. mazzottii, and M. bassolsae, life-cycle were evaluated and compared in two cohorts of each of those three species, fed on hens or rabbits. No significant (p > 0.05) differences were recorded among cohorts fed on hens respect to cohorts fed on rabbits in M. phyllosomus and M. mazzottii and the average time of hatching was 21.5 days for cohorts fed on hens and 22.5 for cohorts fed on rabbits. Average egg-to-adult development times were no significant (p > 0.05) different between both cohorts of M. phyllosomus and M. mazzotti, independent of the blood meal source. The average span in days for each instar fed on hens was not significantly different to the average span for each instar fed on rabbits, when comparisons were made by species. The number of blood meals at each nymphal instar varied from 1 to 6 in both cohorts of each species. The mortality rates were higher on older nymphs, in both cohorts of M. phyllosomus and M. bassolsae, whereas they were higher on first instar nymphs on M. mazzottii. Mean feeding time was no significant (p > 0.05) different in triatomines fed on hens or fed on rabbits, when each species were compared separately. A similar number of nymphs of each cohort, completed the cycle. Defecation delay was no significant (p > 0.05) different when cohorts fed on hens and fed on rabbits were compared by species. Most of the studied parameters showed no significant (p > 0.05) differences among those cohorts fed on hens and for fed on rabbits, which could mean a high degree of association of those species with birds as much as mammals, under wild conditions, increasing their capacity to colonize human dwellings.  相似文献

(Background) Manganese (Mn) is an essential mineral, although its effects on rabbits is not clear. (Research Purpose) This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the level of supplementation of dietary manganese on growth performance, blood biochemistry, nitrogen metabolism and skeletal development of growing Rex rabbits. (Methods) Two hundred 3-month-old healthy Rex rabbits with similar body weights were randomly divided into 5 groups (A, B, C, D, E), with 40 replicates in each group. The rabbits in the 5 groups were fed a basal diet containing 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg manganese (in the form of manganese sulfate), respectively. The trial included 7 days for adaptation and 29 days of testing. Seven days before the end of feeding, eight rabbits from each group were transferred into a metabolic cage for metabolic testing. (Results) The results showed that supplemental dietary manganese levels did not significantly influence final body weight (FBW) or average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P>0.05). Average daily gains (ADG) were significantly higher in the 20 mg/kg manganese group than in the other groups, and the ratio of feed to body weight gain (F/G) was significantly affected by manganese level (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found in the digestion coefficients among the groups (P > 0.05). Regarding carcass traits, the thymus index and total fat were significantly different (P < 0.05) among the groups, but there were no other significant differences (P > 0.05). The addition of manganese had no significant effect on the intake of nitrogen (IN), fecal nitrogen (FN), digestible nitrogen (DN) or the apparent digestibility of nitrogen (NAD). Compared to the other groups, urinary nitrogen (UN) was lower in the 20 mg/kg group, although nitrogen deposition (RN), nitrogen utilization (NUR) and the biological potency of nitrogen (NBV) were higher in this group (P < 0.05). As the amount of manganese added to the diet increased, serum triglycerides decreased (P < 0.05). Serum Mn-SOD was significantly lower in the 5 mg/kg manganese group than in the other groups (P < 0.05). The results of this study demonstrate that a diet with supplemented manganese can improve Rex rabbit growth performance and increase RN, NUR and NBV. There were no significant effects of different dietary levels of Mn on the ratio of bone to meat (P > 0.05) or bone strength (P < 0.05). (Conclusion) In conclusion, we determined that the optimal level of manganese supplementation in the diet of growing Rex rabbits was 20 mg/kg, which was also found to reduce nitrogen emissions into the environment.  相似文献

In many sexually dimorphic mammal species, the sexes live outside the mating season in separate social groups (''social segregation''). Social segregation occurs in a wide range of environmental conditions, but its cause in unknown. I suggest that social segregation is caused by a lower level of activity synchrony between individuals in mixed-sex groups than in single-sex groups, owing to sex differences in activity rhythm. As a consequence, mixed-sex groups are more likely to break up than single-sex groups, resulting in a predominance of single-sex groups at equilibrium. To test this hypothesis in red deer (Cervus elaphus L.), I developed an index of activity synchronization and showed that deer in mixed-sex groups were significantly less synchronized in their activity than deer in single-sex groups. Thus, low intersexual synchrony in activity can lead to social segregation. However, a lower level of intrasexual (female-female and male-male) activity synchrony within mixed-sex than within single-sex groups implies that additional factors (other than sex differences in foraging rhythm) contribute to the higher degree of instability of mixed-sex groups.  相似文献

Clinical, parasitological and pathological responses of a tropical out-bred domestic rabbit to experimental Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection were used to evaluate its suitability as a laboratory host and model for studying the host-parasite relationships of T. colubriformis. In the first experiment, three groups each of 16, predominantly juvenile male, 8- to 10-week-old rabbits were given a single pulse infection with 500, 5000 or 25000 infective larvae (L3) of T. colubriformis, to represent low, medium and high levels of infection, respectively. A fourth group of 16 rabbits of similar age formed the uninfected controls. In the second experiment, two groups of 10 juvenile (8- to 10-week-old) and 10 adult (8- to 10-month-old) rabbits were similarly infected with 20000 L3, with appropriate naive controls. Prepatency was 14 and 16 days and peak faecal egg counts occurred on days 24 and 20 after infection in young and adult rabbits respectively. Peak worm counts occurred on day 14 in both age groups and at all levels of infection. Subsequently, parasite burdens declined in a highly significantly dose- and age-dependent manner. At low and moderate levels of infection, approximately 83-98% of worms were recovered from the first 60 cm of the small intestine. Worm fecundity was also significantly influenced by host age and larval dose. Host age also had a significant effect on worm length. Infections with T. colubriformis were associated with a highly significant loss of body weight, accompanied by anorexia, diarrhoea and 25% mortality at high dose levels during the patent period of infection. There were no significant changes in packed cell volume and eosinophil counts at all ages and levels of infection but significant lymphocytosis occurred at the high dose level between days 7 and 21. Parasite-specific serum IgG responses were not related to worm burden. Overall, data showed that this miniature, docile and relatively inexpensive breed of rabbit is a potentially valuable laboratory host for studying T. colubriformis infections. The larval dose, duration of infection and host age were major determinants of host responsiveness to primary infections in this rabbit genotype.  相似文献

Nippostrongylus brasiliensis incorporated the fluorescent dye, Rhodamine B, while feeding in vitro. Uptake of dye in both sexes of helminth was time-dependent with maximal incorporation occurring after 30 min. Feeding activity was elevated as the time of removal from the host increased from 1 to 8 h. Feeding was reduced in 4- or 5-day-old helminths when compared to 7-day-old or older worms. Feeding activity increased also after temperature increases, pH decreases and solute decreases. Feeding was similar under conditions of both light and dark. Feeding by males and females of N. brasiliensis decreased as the density of worms in single- or mixed-sex groups of worms was increased. Females fed significantly more than males under crowded conditions.  相似文献

Baby rabbits hysterectomy-derived from conventional Japanese white rabbits were reared under aseptic condition by feeding with 4 types of artificial diets. Rabbit milk for the artificial diet was obtained from conventional dams at 7--25 days after delivery. The artificial diets was given by stomach tube twice a day. The total volumes of diet given (ml per day) were Y = 2.3X + a (1 to approximately 14 days of age), Y = 32.2 + a (l5 to approximately 25 days of age), or Y = (32.2 + a) - 37.5 (X - 25) (26 to approximately 34 days of age), (X = age in days, a = volumes fed at 0 day of age). After 14 days of age young animals were also fed freely sterilized commercial pellets and weaned at 35 days of age. Out of 155 rabbits, 130 were aseptically reared till 36 approximately 40 days of age, and no difference on weaning rate was seen between the 4 groups of rabbits. Thereafter, they were exposed to a barriered room of SPF rabbitry outside the isolators. The best growth was seen in animals given by artificial diet containing rabbit milk at 40%. The SPF breeding colony of rabbits was found to be free of Pasteurella pneumotropica, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Salmonella spp., Eimeria spp., Encephalitozoon cuniculi and Acaritic otistis.  相似文献

Soman (GD; phosphonofluoridic acid, methyl-,1,2,2-trimethylpropyl ester) is an organophosphate compound with potent anticholinesterase activity. To determine developmental toxicity, soman was administered orally to CD rats on days 6 through 15 of gestation at dose levels of 0, 37.5, 75, 150, or 165 micrograms/kg/day and to New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits on days 6 through 19 of gestation at dose levels of 0, 2.5, 5, 10, or 15 micrograms/kg/day. At sacrifice, gravid uteri were weighed and examined for number and status of implants. Individual fetal body weights and external, visceral, and skeletal malformations were recorded. Mean maternal weight changes, fetal implantation status/litter, fetal weight, and fetal malformations/litter were compared between dose groups. Monitors for maternal toxicity were net body weight change, treatment weight change, mortality, and clinical signs of toxicity such as lethargy, ataxia, and tremors. Maternal rats and rabbits in the high-dose groups exhibited statistically significant increases in toxicity and mortality when compared to controls. There were no significant dose-related effects among dose groups in the prevalence of postimplantation loss, malformations, or in average body weight of live fetuses per litter. There was no evidence of increased prenatal mortality or fetal toxicity in the CD rat or NZW rabbit following exposure to soman, even at a dose that produced significant maternal toxicity.  相似文献

To investigate the effects of recombinant human monocyte colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) on plasma cholesterol metabolism, we injected M-CSF intravenously into New Zealand White rabbits (n = 13) at a dose of 100 micrograms/day for 7 days. After the treatment, the plasma cholesterol levels fell by 33.2% from 61.4 +/- 25.9 to 41.0 +/- 10.2 mg/dl (mean +/- S.D.). We also injected a large dose of M-CSF (500 micrograms/day) for 6 days into Watanabe Heritable Hyperlipidemic rabbits, which are deficient in low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors. Again, there was a significant reduction in plasma cholesterol levels by 36.2% from 730.5 +/- 176.4 to 466.0 +/- 104.9 mg/dl (n = 4). In the kinetic studies in New Zealand White rabbits with very low density lipoprotein, LDL, and methylated LDL, the removal rates of those lipoproteins were increased 1.9-, 1.7-, and 2.0-fold, respectively, after the treatment. Immunoblot analysis of LDL receptors in the treated rabbits showed no significant changes in LDL receptor proteins in livers but a great increase in spleens and bone marrows compared with the controls. Messenger RNA was also estimated by Northern blotting in both groups, and the results were compatible with those from the immunoblot. The data suggest that M-CSF stimulates the clearance of lipoproteins containing apolipoprotein B-100 via both LDL receptor-dependent and -independent pathways in target cells of M-CSF and reduces plasma cholesterol.  相似文献

Fourteen New Zealand White rabbits with respiratory signs of naturally occurring Pasteurella multocida infections were treated with either an injectable or water-soluble oral formulation of enrofloxacin. Antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated by scoring clinical signs in the rabbits and recovery of the organisms. Seven (87%) of eight rabbits treated with the injectable regimen (5 mg/kg every 12 hours for 14 days) became culture-negative with no clinical signs within 72 hours after initiation of treatment. Six rabbits treated with the oral formulation (200 mg/liter of drinking water for 14 days) also became culture-negative and had no clinical signs 3 to 7 days after treatment began, but P. multocida was recovered from several sites in three (50%) rabbits. No rabbits showed any signs of gastroenteric disturbances.  相似文献
