A dairy farm system trial was conducted between September 2003 and August 2005 to evaluate the effect of integration of maize silage forage on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Potentially, the integration of low-protein forage (e.g. feeding cows with maize silage) to reduce dietary-nitrogen (N) concentration can mitigate environmental N emissions and increase N use efficiency. The dairy farm systems consisted of a maize supplementation system with a stocking rate of 3.8 cows ha?1 of grazed pasture with maize silage brought in and a control system with a stocking rate of 3.0 cows ha?1 of grazed pasture. Direct and indirect N2O emissions from all components of the farm systems were either measured using a closed chamber technique or calculated using the New Zealand IPCC inventory methodology. Annual average N2O emissions were slightly lower on the maize supplementation pasture than on the control pasture. Annual total N2O emissions from the “whole” farm systems (including direct and indict emissions from the grazed pastures, maize growing land, N fertilizer use and associated land application of farm effluent) were 7.71 and 8.00 kg N2O–N ha?1 of dairy farm on the control and maize supplement farm systems, respectively. The corresponding annual milk production was 13,437 and 17,925 kg ha?1. Therefore, the N2O emission per kg of milk production from the maize supplementation was 22% lower than that from the control system. This was due to the much greater efficiency of N use from low-protein maize silage than from pasture. The results suggest that the integration of low-protein forage can be an effective management practice to mitigate adverse environmental effects of increasing stocking rates in the New Zealand dairy farm systems, in terms of N2O emissions per unit of milk production.  相似文献

Questions: How are heathland vegetation dynamics affected by different goat grazing management? Location: Cantabrian heathlands in Illano, Asturias, northern Spain. Methods: During 4 years, vegetation dynamics (structural composition, canopy height and floristic diversity) were studied under three goat grazing treatments with three replicates: high stocking rate (11.7 goats ha?1) with a local Celtiberic breed, and high (15 goats ha?1) and low (6.7 goats ha?1) stocking rates with a commercial Cashmere breed. Results: The relative cover of woody plants, particularly heather species, decreased more while herbaceous cover increased more under local Celtiberic than under Cashmere breed grazing. Within Cashmere treatments, the cover and height of live shrubs decreased more and the herbaceous cover increased more under high than under low stocking rate. Redundancy analysis showed a significant effect of treatment × year interaction on floristic composition. Greater species richness was recorded under local goat grazing, but Shannon diversity index fell in the fourth year on these plots because of dominance by two grass species. Conclusions: Local Celtiberic goat grazing at such a high stocking rate (11.7 goats ha?1) hinders the development of sustainable systems on these heathlands, both in environmental and productive terms, owing to the limitations in soil fertility. Nevertheless, Celtiberic goats could be useful for controlling excessive shrub encroachment and reducing fire hazard. Cashmere goat grazing at high stocking rate promoted the highest Shannon diversity by generating a better balance between woody and herbaceous plants, while shrub dominance was not altered under the low stocking rate.  相似文献

Intra‐ and interannual variability of precipitation can lead to major modifications of grassland production and carbon storage capacity. Greater understanding of how climatic variability affects net CO2 exchange [i.e. net ecosystem exchange (NEE)] of grazed grasslands is important to adapt grassland management and reduce risks of carbon losses. Since 2002, we continuously measured NEE (i.e. eddy covariance technique) on an upland grassland site (7 ha), divided in two paddocks grazed by heifers (intensive: 1 LSU ha?1 yr?1, 213 kg N ha?1 yr?1 and extensive: 0.5 LSU ha?1 yr?1, no fertilization). For years with dry and warm growing seasons (i.e. 2003, 2005 and 2008), absolute annual NEE was higher in the intensive paddock compared with the extensive paddock. The opposite was observed during years of ample seasonal rainfall and soil moisture (i.e. 2004, 2006 and 2007). Contrasted management led to two distinct plant communities being different in leaf area index (LAI), soil bulk density and soil water holding capacity. Differences in annual NEEs could thus be assigned to interactions between in carbon and water fluxes during dry and wet growth periods. Dry growth periods led to a reduction in weekly gross primary productivity (GPP) in the extensively managed paddock, whereas the GPP was maintained in the intensive paddock. In turn, during wet growth periods, GPP was similar in both paddocks, whereas N amendment and frequent defoliation significantly increased ecosystem respiration in the intensive paddock, presumably through a higher heterotrophic respiration following on a better C substrate quality and availability (rhizodeposition and senescent fine roots). In the extensive paddock, where plant cover was denser (reducing soil temperature) and less decomposable, C losses through heterotrophic respiration were comparatively smaller under wet conditions. Our results demonstrate that grassland subjected to a moderately intensive management could be more resilient in terms of carbon storage during drought and heat waves, presumably because of a trade‐off between heterotrophic and autotrophic respiration.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine optimum stocking density for Clarias batrachus larvae and fry during hatchery rearing. The increase in stocking density decreased the total weight, specific growth rate (SGR) and percent weight gain of Clarias larvae during a 13‐day experiment. Survival rate was highest at a stocking density of 1000 m?2 and lowest at 5000 m?2. Stocking density did not influence the total biomass production of larvae. Clarias batrachus fry performance was studied during a 28‐day hatchery rearing experiment whereby fry stocked at a density of 100 m?2 attained the highest total body weight (P < 0.05). The survival rate greatly declined to 59–61% by a density increase to 300 m?2 and above. Stocking density influenced growth and survival of C. batrachus larvae and fry during hatchery rearing. The best performance was obtained when larvae were stocked at 2000 m?2; survival was highest with C. batrachus fry stocked at 200 m?2.  相似文献

Salmon eggs and unfed fry were planted in reaches (total length 2.8 km, mean width 4 m) of a Scottish stream between 1971 and 1977 and their subsequent progress was studied by sampling 16 sections (areas 38–126 m2) of the stream. Brown trout are the only fish which spawn in the stream, waterfalls and a dam near its mouth preventing adult salmon and sea-trout passing upstream. There were no restraints on the downstream movement of fish except in 1977, when a fry trap was operated. In 1971 and 1974 boxes each containing 300 eggs were buried in groups of 3–6. In other years fry were evenly distributed at 3.6–29.3 m?2. At the end of the first growing season, salmon occurred at decreasing population densities for a distance of 600 m below the plantings, but after two growing seasons there was little remaining indication of their pattern of dispersion when planted. Rates of survival between planting and the end of the growing season were 9.4–31%. Survival when eggs were planted (11.1–14.8%) was not affected by the numbers planted together at one point (900–1800) or the distance apart of groups of boxes (10–85 m). When fry were planted the instantaneous mortality rate (M) of the 0+ salmon during their first growing season was related to the initial stocking density (Dp) by the formula M= 0.00637 + 0.00444 log10Dp. Twenty-two to 88% of 0+ salmon present at the end of the growing season were still surviving in the stream as 1+ fish one year later. In 1973–1976 only a small number of 2+ salmon occurred, the majority having migrated between the end of the second growing season and the following spring. There were more 2+ salmon in 1977 and 1978 resulting from higher stocking densities in 1975 and 1976 and slower growth. Trout of several age classes were present but their population densities were never high (<0.6 m?2). Salmon reached a greater size than trout by the end of the first growing season. Their mean weight (Wo, g) at this time was inversely related to their population density (Do No. m?2) and the biomass (B1, g m?2) of 1+ salmon present, giving the relationship log10wo= 0.6584–0.0558 D0-0.0352B1. The mean weight of 1+ salmon tended to be highest in sections where the 0+ salmon had reached a relatively large size the previous year. When a reach of the stream was planted twice (11 and 30 May 1977) with salmon fry (total 13.9 m?2) at the same stage of development, M during the first growing season was 0.0099 per day. This was less than that of fry in a control (M= 0.0107) where the stocking density was lower (6.8 m?2) and also less than in previous years when single planting rates of approximately 14 m?2 were used (M=0.0115). The double planting resulted in a wide range of lengths of 0+ salmon in September and the highest biomass values encountered during all experiments.  相似文献

Extremely high nutrient loads have been reported in grazed grassland regimes compared with cutting regimes in some dairy systems that include the use of supplemental feeding. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate the effects on productivity and behaviour of high-yielding dairy cows with limited access to indoor feed and restriction in the time at pasture in a continuous stocking system. During a 6-week period from the start of the grazing season 2005, an experiment was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of restrictive indoor feeding combined with limiting the time at pasture on the productivity and behaviour of high-yielding dairy cows (31.0 ± 5.4 kg energy-corrected milk) in a system based on continuous stocking. The herd was split into three groups allocated to three treatments consisting of 4, 6.5 and 9 h at pasture, respectively. Each group of cows grazed in separate paddocks with three replicates and was separately housed in a cubicle system with slatted floor during the rest of the day. All cows were fed the same amount of supplement, adjusted daily to meet the ad libitum indoor intake of the cows at pasture for nine hours. The herbage allowance was 1650 kg dry matter (DM) per ha, and the intake of supplemental feed was 9.1 kg DM per cow daily. The limitation of the time at pasture to 4 h in combination with restrictive indoor feeding reduced the daily milk, fat and protein yield and live weight compared with 9 h of access to pasture. The proportion of time during which the cows were grazing while at pasture increased from 0.64 to 0.86 and the estimated herbage intake per h at pasture decreased from 2547 g DM to1398 g DM, when time at pasture changed from 4 to 9 h. It can be concluded, that in systems with a high herbage allowance, the cow was able to compensate for 0.8 of the reduction in time at pasture by increasing the proportion of time spent grazing and presumably also both the bite rate and mass, although the latter two have not been directly confirmed in the present study.  相似文献

Data from 57 permanent monitoring sites are used to document the growth in woody vegetation and estimate the carbon sink in 27 M ha of eucalypt woodlands (savannas), contained within c. 60 M ha of grazed woodlands in Queensland (northeast Australia). The study sites are shown to be representative of the environment and structure of the eucalypt woodlands in the defined study area. Mean basal area increment for all live woody plants in 30 long‐term sites, with an average initial basal area of 11.86 ± 1.38 (SE) m2 ha?1, was 1.06 m2 ha?1 over a mean 14 years timeframe. The majority of the measurement period, commencing between 1982 and 1988, was characterized by below‐average rainfall. The increase in live tree basal area was due primarily to growth of existing trees (3.12 m2 ha?1) rather than establishment of new plants (0.25 m2 ha?1) and was partly offset by death (2.31 m2 ha?1). A simple but robust relationship between stand basal area and stand biomass of all woody species was developed for the eucalypt dominant woodlands. Analysis of above‐ground carbon stocks in live and standing dead woody plants gave a mean net above‐ground annual carbon increment for all 57 sites of 0.53 t C ha?1 y?1, similar to values estimated elsewhere in world savannas. Published root : shoot ratios were used to infer C flux in woody root systems on these sites. This results in an estimated sink in above‐ and below‐ground biomass of 18 Mt C y?1 over the eucalypt woodlands studied, and potentially up to 35 Mt C y?1 if extended to all grazed woodlands in Queensland. It is suggested that introduction of livestock grazing and altered fire regimes have triggered the change in tree‐grass dominance in these woodlands. Thus, change in carbon stocks in the grazed woodlands of Queensland is identified as an important component of human‐induced greenhouse gas flux in Australia, equivalent in magnitude to c. 25% of the most recently published (1999) total estimated national net emissions. The latter inventory takes into account emissions from land clearing, but does not include the sink identified in the present study. This sequestration also represents a small but significant contribution to the global terrestrial carbon sink.  相似文献

The present study was conducted: (a) to determine the degree of seasonal variation in testis stereology in Corriedale rams between autumn and winter; (b) to test the hypothesis that testis stereology of Corriedale rams grazing native pastures during autumn and winter would differ from those of Corriedale rams grazing sown pastures and supplemented with grain during the same period; and (c) to determine whether Sertoli cell numbers differ in adult rams between the breeding season (autumn) and the following non-breeding season (winter). Twenty experimental animals were studied. Six rams (autumn control group, C-A) that had been grazing on native pasture (stocking rate=2–3 animals ha−1) were castrated at the beginning of the experiment (March, early autumn). Seven rams (winter control group, C-W) continued to graze on native pasture at the same stocking rate until the end of the experiment (August, late winter). Another seven rams (treated group, T) grazed on improved pasture (stocking rate=1–2 animals ha−1) and were supplemented with 1 kg grain ram−1 day−1 until the end of the experiment. Live weight, scrotal circumference, serum testosterone concentration and selected testicular stereological parameters were measured. The treatment did not impede the winter reduction in testicular activity and reduced its magnitude slightly (group T) compared with controls (group C-W). Sertoli cell numbers were higher in autumn (group C-A) than in winter, both on native (group C-W) and sown pastures (group T). Diminishing Sertoli cell numbers between autumn and the following winter suggest the occurrence of that Sertoli cell death during this period. The results indicate that, although the reproductive activity of Corriedale rams is moderately seasonal, a restricted change in grazing and grain supplementation can only modify it to a limited extent.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was conducted for 75 days to examine how irradiance levels and grazing influence algal biomass and community structure. Twelve laboratory streams were used for experimental analyses, with four channels exposed to one of three irradiance levels (15, 100, or 400 μE·m?2·s?1). Three of the four stream at each light level were stocked with the snail Juga silicula (250·m?2), leaving one stream at each light level without snails. Grazed stream exposed to low light levels developed low amounts of algal biomass (<2 g AFDW·m?2) and were dominated by adnately attached diatoms. Mean algal biomass increased over time in the grazed streams exposed to intermediate light; by day 75, these streams were characterized by moderate algal biomasses (30-40 g AFDW·m?2) and filamentous chlorophytes. Algal assemblages in high light, grazed channels had high levels of biomass at day 43 (70 g AFDW·m?2) that declined to 30 g AFDW·m?2at day 75 and were dominated by chlorophytes. Among ungrazed streams, algal biomass at day 75 was relatively low in the low light streams (<7g AFDW·m?2) and was dominated by adnately attached diatoms. Ungrazed streams exposed to intermediate and high light levels had moderate biomasses (23 and 19 g AFDW·m?2, respectively) and were dominated by chlorophytes and large diatoms. Grazing appeared both to delay and alter successional trajectories of algal assemblages, with alterations most noticeable during early seral stages at intermediate and high light levels. Grazing had the least effect on successional trajectories at low light.  相似文献

Species composition and herbage dynamics in relation to rainfall variability and cattle grazing were studied in permanently protected, grazed, and temporarily fenced treatments on three sites in a seasonally dry tropical savanna. Permanently protected sites, established between 1979 and 1984, were 55–79% similar with each other in species composition, and 14–25% similar with grazed sites during the period 1986–1988. Similarity among grazed sites was only 36–43%. Number of species was greater in the grazed treatment than in the permanently protected treatment. The percentages of annual grasses and non-leguminous forbs were greater in grazed savanna than in permanently protected savanna. Species diversity was higher in grazed savanna than in the corresponding permanently protected savanna. Species the two annual cycles studied, peak live shoot biomass was 614 g m-2 in permanently protected savanna, 109 g m-2 in grazed savanna, and 724 g m-2 in temporarily fenced savanna. Live shoot biomass in temporarily fenced savanna was 18 to 44% greater than in permanently protected savanna. Peak canopy biomass ranged from 342 to 700 g m-2 in permanently protected savanna. It was related with total rainy season rainfall, and was particularly sensitive to late rainy season rainfall. On the other hand, peak canopy biomass in grazed savanna ranged from 59 to 169 g m-2 and was related to grazing intensity rather than either total rainy season rainfall or late rainy season rainfall. Coefficient of variation of green biomass in permanently protected savanna was related with rainfall variability indicating it to be a pulsed system which responds quickly to rainfall events. Biomass of woody species ranged from 2466 to 5298 g m-2 in permanently protected savanna and from 744 to 1433 g m–2 in the grazed savanna. Green foliage biomass was 3.7 to 6.4% of the woody biomass in permanently protected and 5.6 to 5.9% in grazed savanna, and supplements substantially the fodder resource during the dry periods of the year.  相似文献

Effects of long-term applications (50, 100 and 200 m3 ha?1y?1) of pig and cow slurries on yield, botanical composition and nutrient content of herbage of an original perennial ryegrass sward were assessed in a three-cut silage system and compared with unamended and fertilized controls in the 36th year of the experiment. Cow slurry at 50 m3 ha?1 produced similar annual herbage DM yield to 200 kg ha?1 fertilizer N in 2006, whereas about 100 m3 ha?1 pig slurry were required to produce a similar amount of DM. The highest slurry application rate significantly influenced sward botanical composition without depressing DM yield. The principal invading species were creeping bent and meadow grasses (similar to findings at a previous assessment in 1981) except in the unamended control (which were common bent and Yorkshire fog). Perennial ryegrass remained a main species in plots receiving fertilizer (31 % annual DM yield) and low slurry rates (38 %) but declined to 3 % annual DM yield at the highest slurry rate where the ability of ryegrass to utilize slurry N and P may have been affected by chemically or physically induced deficiencies of other nutrients (e.g. Ca) or direct physical effects such as smothering.  相似文献

Overgrazing‐induced degradation of temperate semiarid steppes may affect the soil sink for atmospheric methane (CH4). However, previous studies have primarily focused on the growing season and on single grazing patterns. Thus, the response of annual CH4 uptake by steppes compared with various grazing practices is uncertain. In this study, we investigated the effects of grazing on the annual CH4 uptake by two typical Eurasian semiarid steppes (the Stipa grandis steppe and the Leymus chinensis steppe) located in Inner Mongolia, China. The CH4 fluxes were measured year‐round using static chambers and gas chromatography at 12 field sites that differed primarily in grazing intensities. Our results indicated that steppe soils were CH4 sinks throughout the year. The annual CH4 uptake correlated with stocking rates, whereas the seasonality of CH4 uptake was primarily dominated by temperature. The annual CH4 uptake at all sites averaged 3.7±0.7 kg C ha?1 yr?1 (range: 2.3–4.5), where approximately 35% (range: 23–40%) occurred during the nongrowing season. Light‐to‐moderate grazing (stocking rate≤1 sheep ha?1 yr?1) did not significantly change the annual CH4 uptake compared with ungrazed steppes, but heavy grazing reduced annual CH4 uptake significantly (by 24–31%, P<0.05). These findings imply that easing the pressure of heavily grazed steppes (e.g. moving to light or moderate stocking rates) would help restore steppe soil sinks for atmospheric CH4. The empirical equations based on the significant relationships between annual CH4 uptake and stocking rates, aboveground plant biomass and topsoil air permeability (P<0.01) could provide simple approaches for the estimation of regional CH4 uptake by temperate semiarid steppes.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) pastures are increasingly being used for cool-season forages to complement range-based goat production systems in southern USA. Because goats are more selective than cattle, ideal nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates already established for wheat grazed by cattle may be different for goats. Weight gains of Boer X Spanish doe kids (average 17 kg) as well as forage yields and crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) concentrations were measured for two winter seasons on replicated wheat paddocks fertilized with 0, 56, 112 and 224 kg N/ha per season in split autumn/spring applications at Stephenville, TX, USA. Animals were stocked in the pasture at 20 head/ha from January to April 2003 (478 mm rainfall from September to March) and 2004 (355 mm rainfall). Available forage ranged from 50 to 200 kg/ha in January and from 2300 to 6300 kg/ha in April in the 0 and 224 kg N/ha paddocks, respectively. Crude protein dry matter (DM) concentration ranged from 25 to 34% (0 and 224 kg N/ha, respectively) in January, but down to 13 and 22% across treatments in April. Average daily gains (ADG) over the 90-day trial were similar both years, 68 g per head per day for the 0 N treatment and undifferentiated among the fertilized paddocks, all near 90 g per head per day. Results indicate that N fertilizer rates above 56 kg/ha per season do not increase ADG/kid, but will increase ADG/ha if stocking rates are adjusted for forage production.  相似文献

Scaling‐up knowledge of land‐atmosphere net ecosystem exchange (NEE) from a single experimental site to numerous perennial grass fields in the Northern Great Plains (NGP) requires appropriate scaling protocols. We addressed this problem using synoptic data available from the Landsat sensor for 10 growing seasons (April 15 to September 30) over a North Dakota field‐site, where we continuously measured CO2 exchange using a Bowen Ratio Energy Balance (BREB) system. NEE observed during the growing season at our field‐site from 1997 to 2006 vacillated with drought and deluge, with net carbon (C) losses to the atmosphere in 2006. We used stepwise linear regression with 10 years of Landsat and NEE data to construct and validate a model for estimating grassland growing‐season NEE from field to landscape scales. Eighty‐nine percent of the variability in NEE was explained by year, live biomass, carbon : nitrogen ratio, day of image acquisition, and annual precipitation. We then applied this model on 20 620 ha of North Dakota perennial grass fields enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), including 1272 fields east of the Missouri River and 165 fields west‐river. Growing‐season NEE for individual CRP fields was highly variable from 1997 to 2006, ranging from ?366 to 692 g C m?2 growing season?1. Mean annual growing‐season fluxes over 10 years for CRP fields located east‐river and west‐river were 317 g C m?2 growing season?1 and 239 g C m?2 growing season?1, respectively. Average cumulative growing‐season NEE modeled for fields east‐ and west‐river diverged from one another in 2002–2006, when west‐river fields received < 70% of the long‐term annual average precipitation during these years. Results indicate assessment of conservation practices on grassland CO2 exchange during the growing season can be remotely estimated at field and landscape scales under variable environmental conditions and should be followed up with similar, spatially explicit investigations of NEE during the dormant season.  相似文献

In many temperate ecosystems, rates of atmospheric nitrogen deposition remain high over winter despite decreased agricultural activity over this season. The extent to which this nitrogen is accessible for plant growth over the following growing season may depend strongly on uptake by plants and soil microorganisms from late fall through early spring, when the majority of aboveground plant tissue has senesced. We added Ca(15NO3)2 (5 atom %15N) at a rate of 2 g m?2 of N (corresponding to 100 mg 15N m?2) to the surface of plots in a temperate old field during either late fall, winter, spring melt or early spring. We quantified the recovery of excess 15N in the soil microbial biomass and soil extracts following spring melt and in aboveground plant tissue at the peak of the plant growing season. Nitrate additions had no significant effect on total aboveground plant biomass, relative species abundance or percent tissue nitrogen. However, mean excess 15N in aboveground plant tissue varied significantly among treatments, with values of 8.1, 2.6, 0.3 and 7.3 mg m?2 for late fall, winter, spring melt and early spring addition plots, respectively. Corresponding values of excess 15N were 3.1, 1.4 and 0.2 mg m?2 in microbial biomass, and 0.17, 0.07 and 0.03 mg m?2 in soil extracts, for late fall, winter and spring melt addition plots, respectively. Overall, these results indicate that nitrogen retention from late fall through early spring may depend highly on plant uptake in this system, and that only a small fraction of the nitrogen that accumulates in the winter snow pack may be available to plants.  相似文献

The effects of varying nitrogen supply on canopy leaf area, response of leaf net photosynthesis (An) to quantum flux density (Q), and fruit yields of kiwifruit vines (Actinidia deliciosa var. deliciosa) were examined in a two-year field experiment. Vines were grown with 0, 250 or 750 kg N ha?1 year?1. The responses to nitrogen supply were compared with responses to shade, to examine the impact of reduced carbon assimilation on canopy leaf area and fruit yields. Nitrogen supply did not affect significantly any of the measured variables during the first season of the experiment. In the second season, canopy leaf area was reduced significantly where nitrogen supply was limited. The quantum efficiency of photosynthesis (φq) increased from 0. 03 mol CO2 mol?1 Q soon after leaf emergence to more than 0. 05 mol CO2 mol?1 Q during the middle of the growing season. The quantum saturated rate of An (Asat) also increased during the season, from 7–10 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1 soon after leaf emergence, to 15–20 (μmol CO2 m?2 s?1 during the middle of the growing season. φq and Asat increased significantly with nitrogen supply at all measurement times during the second season. For vines with high nitrogen, fruit yields in both seasons were similar, averaging 3. 05 kg m?2. Fruit yields in the second season were reduced significantly where nitrogen supply was limited, due to reduced fruit numbers. The relative effects of reduced leaf area and reduced leaf photosynthesis for carbon assimilation by nitrogen deficient vines were examined using a mathematical model of canopy photosynthesis for kiwifruit vines. Simulations of canopy photosynthesis indicated that effects on leaf area and on leaf photosynthesis were of similar importance in the overall effects of nitrogen deficiency on carbon assimilation. The effects of nitrogen supply on fruit numbers (i. e. flower development) preceded the measured effects on carbon assimilation, indicating that the nitrogen supply affected carbon partitioning to reserves in the first season.  相似文献

A 3‐month experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of stocking density on growth performance and skin color of juvenile darkbarbel catfish. Experimental fish (5.0 ± 0.6 g; n = 160) were stocked in triplicate in 2 m2 concrete tanks in a greenhouse at the initial density of 50, 150, 400 and 650 fish m?2, respectively (0.42, 1.25, 3.33 and 5.42 kg m?3). At the end of the experiment, 60 fish from each tank were sampled to record body weight and total length, and six fish from each tank were sampled to measure skin color by instrumental color analysis. Results showed that stocking density affected growth performance significantly (P < 0.05). Final mean weight (W), final mean total length (L) and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly higher at 150 fish m?2 treatment and lower in both the highest and lowest (650 and 50 fish m?2) density treatments (P < 0.05). The condition factor (CF) was higher in 150 and 50 fish m?2 and lowest at 650 fish m?2 treatment; the coefficient of variation of weight (CV) tended to increase with the increase in stocking density, which was lowest in 50 fish m?2 and highest in 650 fish m?2. Stocking density also affected the skin color parameters, L* (lightness), a* (redness), b* (yellowness) and h* (hue), significantly (P < 0.05). The values of these parameters tended to decline with the increase in stocking density. Results of the present study suggest that growth performance and skin color responses to stock density exhibit different patterns for darkbarbel catfish juveniles: highest and lowest densities impaired growth rate, and higher density had a darkening effect on skin color.  相似文献

Short rotation coppice (SRC) of willow and poplar might be a promising phytoremediation option since it uses fast growing, high biomass producing tree species with often a sufficient metal uptake. This study evaluates growth, metal uptake and extraction potentials of eight willow clones (Belders, Belgisch Rood, Christina, Inger, Jorr, Loden, Tora and Zwarte Driebast) on a metal-contaminated agricultural soil, with total cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) concentrations of 6.5 ± 0.8 and 377 ± 69 mg kg?1 soil, respectively. Although, during the first cycle, on average generally low productivity levels (3.7 ton DM (dry matter) ha?1 y?1) were obtained on this sandy soil, certain clones exhibited quite acceptable productivity levels (e.g. Zwarte Driebast 12.5 ton DM ha?1 y?1). Even at low biomass productivity levels, SRC of willow showed promising removal potentials of 72 g Cd and 2.0 kg Zn ha?1 y?1, which is much higher than e.g. energy maize or rapeseed grown on the same soil. Cd and Zn removal can be increased by 40% if leaves are harvested as well. Nevertheless, nowadays the wood price remains the most critical factor in order to implement SRC as an acceptable, economically feasible alternative crop on metal-contaminated agricultural soils.  相似文献

Eddy covariance measurements of methane (CH4) net flux were made in a boreal fen, typical of the most abundant peatlands in western Canada during May–September 2007. The objectives of this study were to determine: (i) the magnitude of diurnal and seasonal variation in CH4 net flux, (ii) the relationship between the temporally varying flux rates and associated changes in controlling biotic and abiotic factors, and (iii) the contribution of CH4 emission to the ecosystem growing season carbon budget. There was significant diurnal variation in CH4 emission during the peak of the growing season that was strongly correlated with associated changes in solar radiation, latent heat flux, air temperature and ecosystem conductance to water vapor. During days 181–215, nighttime average CH4 efflux was only 47% of the average midday values. The peak value for daily average CH4 emission rate was approximately 80 nmol m?2 s?1 (4.6 mg CH4 m?2 h?1), and seasonal variation in CH4 flux was strongly correlated with changes in soil temperature. Integrated over the entire measurement period [days 144–269 (late May–late September)], the total CH4 emission was 3.2 g CH4 m?2, which was quite low relative to other wetland ecosystems and to the simultaneous high rate of ecosystem net CO2 sequestration that was measured (18.1 mol CO2 m?2 or 217 g C m?2). We estimate that the negative radiative forcing (cooling) associated with net carbon storage over the life of the peatland (approximately 2200 years) was at least twice the value of positive radiative forcing (warming) caused by net CH4 emission over the last 50 years.  相似文献

The study was carried out to evaluate growth performance of Indian major carps at different stocking densities in rainwater reservoirs. In this experiment, the absolute growth performance of Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala at stocking densities of 5000, 8000 and 11 000 fingerlings per hectare was 377.7, 215.4 and 241.9; 370.2, 186.7 and 219.1; and 306.7, 163.4 and 180.6 g, respectively. The recorded biomass yield at 5000, 8000 and 11 000 fingerlings per hectare was 1035, 1572 and 1573 kg ha?1 per 180 days of culture. The effect of stocking density on production performance (performance index, PI) was highly significant (P < 0.05) at the higher stocking density of 11 000 ha?1, while there was no significant variation between PI at stocking densities of 5000 and 8000 ha?1. This indicates optimum production performance at 8000 ha?1, where yield is significantly higher (P < 0.05) than yield at 5000 ha?1 and almost equal to the yield at 11 000 ha?1. An increase in stocking density from 8000 to 11 000 ha?1, however, showed a sharp decline in average mean body weight of each species, even with supplemental feeding. With an increase in stocking density, the biomass yield increased to an optimum (1572 kg ha?1), with no substantial increase thereafter. Reductions in growth, which occurred at high density, did not appear to be due to poor water quality as the water quality did not differ significantly among various treatments. Thus, the reduced survival and growth at high density appears to be a behavioural interaction or physiological response to density itself.  相似文献
