Populations of anadromous European smelt Osmerus eperlanus (L.) are declining across its geographical range in northern Europe, but no practical culture techniques exist to develop stock enhancement programmes for this species. In this study, a culture protocol is described to rear fish from fertilised eggs to mature adults in 2 years involving the use of ‘green water’, live feed and artificial diets. The sequence of embryonic development for eggs incubated at 10°C/0 ppt was described and photographed. To determine the optimum conditions for larval culture, fertilised eggs were reared at a range of salinities (0–20 ppt) and temperatures (5–18°C) until first feeding. Best hatching success (ca. 97%), size at hatch (ca. 0.8 mm) and survival to first feeding (ca. 96%) of larvae were achieved under combined conditions of low salinity (0–0 ppt) and temperature (5–10°C). No larvae survived a salinity of 20 ppt. The time taken from fertilisation to hatch (FtH) and hatching duration (HD) were temperature-dependent ranging from 42 days FtH and 10 days HD at 5ºC, to 10 days FtH and 2 days HD at 18°C irrespective of salinity. The results indicate that conservation programmes could utilise existing salmonid hatchery facilities (i.e. freshwater, ≤10°C water temperature) for stock enhancement. Since on-growing of smelt involves the logistical and technical problems of live feed production, it is recommended that smelt enhancement programme utilise freshwater hatchery facilities to rear fish until hatching, and then stock out onto known spawning grounds in rivers allowing hatched larvae to drift into estuaries to complete the larval and juvenile phases. This approach would minimise the time spent in the hatchery post-hatching, eliminate the need for live food production, prevent the development of predator-naïve fish, and hence would mimic the natural life cycle of the species as closely as possible.  相似文献

Of the three Brachionus species used in aquaculture, Brachionus rubens, B. calycilorus and B. plicatilis, the latter is most widely used in raising marine fish and shrimp larvae due to its tolerance to the marine environment. In freshwater aquaculture the use of B. rubens and B. calycilorus is limited, probably because inert food products are readily available as feed for freshwater larvae.The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is used in large numbers as the first food organism in intensive cultures of marine fish and shrimp larvae. An adequate supply of these rotifers relies on mass cultures. The reproductive rate of rotifers in these cultures depends on food quality and quantity, salinity, temperature and pH of the medium. Removal of waste products from culture tanks leads to higher and more efficient production of rotifers over extended periods of time. Rotifers have to be enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for proper development and survival of marine fish and shrimp larvae.The future use of preserved rotifers and their resting eggs may help to overcome unforeseen failures of live cultures and may lead to more efficient use of these organisms in raising freshwater and marine fish and shrimp larvae.  相似文献

长江口水域夏季鱼卵和仔稚鱼年间变化   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
基于2005年、2008年、2009年和2011年8月(夏季)在长江口水域(30°30'—31°45'N,121°15'—123°10'E)4个航次的浮游生物拖网资料,分析了长江口水域鱼卵和仔稚鱼的种类组成、数量分布特征及其年间变化。结果表明:4个航次采集的鱼卵和仔稚鱼鉴定到种的种类有17种,隶属于8目13科,以鲈形目种类最多,11种,其次是鲱形目,5种,其他各目种类均小于5种;种类数存在明显年间差异,2005年种类数最多(鱼卵3种,仔稚鱼8种),其次是2009年和2011年,2008年种类数最少(鱼卵1种,仔稚鱼5种)。优势种年间更替明显,长蛇鲻(Saurida elongata)、虾虎鱼(Gobiidae spp.)和中华小公鱼(Stolephorus chinensis)在2005年是优势种,2008年优势种为鳀鱼(Engraulis japonicus),2009年优势种为鳀鱼、寡鳞飘鱼(Pseudolaubuca engraulis)、虾虎鱼等,2011年虾虎鱼和小公鱼(包括小公鱼属未定种Stolephorus spp.和中华小公鱼Stolephorus chinensis)成为优势种。2005年鱼卵和仔稚鱼数量分布的密集区在嵊泗列岛附近水域,2008年鱼卵和仔稚鱼出现较少,未出现明显的数量密集区;2009年鱼卵数量较少,仔稚鱼数量较多,密集区主要分布在在长江口以外123°E附近水域;2011年鱼卵主要分布在在长江北支口门外附近水域,仔稚鱼在调查区内分布相对均匀。  相似文献

Larval and juvenile stages of kurosoi,Sebastes schlegeli, are described and illustrated from wild specimens. Some ecological aspects of larvae and juveniles are also described. Notochord flexion occurred between 5.6–7.5 mm SL. Transformation occurred between 13–20 mm SL. Preflexion and flexion larvae ofS. schlegeli can be distinguished from similar larvae by the pigmentation of the dorsal and ventral midlines of the tail and absence of pigmentation on the ventral portion of the rectum. After notochord flexion, the dorsal and lateral regions in both larvae and pelagic juveniles were heavily pigmented, suggesting adaptation for neustonic life style. Larvae and juveniles were caught at many coastal stations, but did not occur in cooler offshore waters. Larvae smaller than 20 mm SL inhabited surface waters. Until ca. 40 mm SL, juveniles inhabited mainly surface waters (without drifting seaweed), but also used other habitats, such as the drifting seaweed, and near the sea bed. Small larvae (<7 mm SL) fed mainly on copepod nauplii. Larger larvae fed on calanoid copepodites andEvadne nordmanni. Pelagic juveniles fed mainly on fish eggs, with fish larvae also being important food items for some individuals. Most food items taken by juveniles that were associated with drifting seaweed were eggs with attaching filaments (Cololabis saira andHyporhamphus sajori), suggesting that the high density of such food items both attracts and keeps juveniles around drifting seaweed.  相似文献

Egg masses of Luciogobius ryukyuensis were found in spawning grounds around the lowest reach of the adult??s habitat in the tidally influenced area of streams on Okinawa Island. The eggs were attached to the underside of stones and were cared for by a solitary male fish. The number of eggs within an egg mass was 191?C1368. The eggs were elliptical, measuring 2.0?C2.6?mm in length, and 0.6?C0.8?mm in width. Early development of L. ryukyuensis was described from laboratory-reared specimens. Newly hatched larvae, measuring 2.8?C3.3?mm in body length, had an open mouth, pigmented eyes, pectoral fin buds, an orange-colored yolk sac, and characteristic melanophores along the dorsal and ventral midlines of the body. The yolk was completely absorbed at days 2?C3. Notochord flexion began at day 10 and was completed at day 15. The fish started settling on the bottom of the tank at day 34 (14.1?mm in body length) when the body surface started to be covered by intense pigmentation. The eggs and newly hatched larvae of L. ryukyuensis were of standard size of the genus and their morphologies closely resemble those of L. guttatus.  相似文献

The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (O.F. Muller) can be mass cultivated in large quantities and is an important live feed in aquaculture. This rotifer is commonly offered to larvae during the first 7–30 days of exogenous feeding. Variation in prey density affects larval fish feeding rates, rations, activity, evacuation time, growth rates and growth efficiencies. B. plicatilis can be supplied at the food concentrations required for meeting larval metabolic demands and yielding high survival rates. Live food may enhance the digestive processes of larval predators. A large range of genetically distinct B. plicatilis strains with a wide range of body size permit larval rearing of many fish species. Larvae are first fed on a small strain of rotifers, and as larvae increase in size, a larger strain of rotifers is introduced. Rotifers are regarded as living food capsules for transferring nutrients to fish larvae. These nutrients include highly unsaturated fatty acids (mainly 20: 5 n–3 and 22: 6 n–3) essential for survival of marine fish larvae. In addition, rotifers treated with antibiotics may promote higher survival rates. The possibility of preserving live rotifers at low temperatures or through their resting eggs has been investigated.  相似文献

Complex habitat structures can influence the foraging success of fish. Competition for food between fish species can therefore depend on the competitors' abilities to cope with structural complexity. In laboratory experiments, we comparatively assessed effects of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha Pall .) on the foraging success of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) and ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus (L.)). In single‐species and mixed‐species experiments, the fish were fed caddisfly larvae (Tinodes waeneri (L.)) over complex (mussel‐covered stones) and less‐complex (bare stones) substrates. With intraspecific competition, food consumption by perch and ruffe decreased significantly when the complex substrate was used. With interspecific competition, food consumption by perch and ruffe did not change with substrate complexity, but perch clearly out‐competed ruffe on both substrates. Mass production of black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), larvae results in massive heat generation, which impacts facility management, waste conversion, and larval production. We tested daily substrate temperatures with different population densities (i.e., 0, 500, 1000, 5000, and 10 000 larvae/pan), different population sizes (i.e., 166, 1000, and 10 000 larvae at a fixed feed ratio) and air temperatures (i.e., 20 and 30 °C) on various production parameters. Impacts of shifting larvae from 30 to 20 °C on either day 9 or 11 were also determined. Larval activity increased substrate temperatures significantly (i.e., at least 10 °C above air temperatures). Low air temperature favored growth with the higher population sizes while high temperature favored growth with low population sizes. The greatest average individual larval weights (e.g., 0.126 and 0.124 g) and feed conversion ratios (e.g., 1.92 and 2.08 g/g) were recorded for either 10 000 larvae reared at 20 °C or 100 larvae reared at 30 °C. Shifting temperatures from high (30 °C) to low (20 °C) in between (∼10-d-old larvae) impacted larval production weights (16% increases) and feed conversion ratios (increased 14%). Facilities should consider the impact of larval density, population size, and air temperature during black soldier fly mass production as these factors impact overall larval production.  相似文献

The predation potential of littoral mysid shrimps (Mysidacea) on Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) eggs and yolk-sac larvae was studied experimentally. The results showed that littoral mysids feed actively on both eggs and yolk-sac larvae. It was shown that Neomysis integer preys on eggs, which are not attached to the substrate. Alternative food (yolk-sac larvae or zooplankton) did not decrease feeding rate on eggs. Only gravel as a bottom material lowered the ingestion rate to nearly zero. The largest of the mysid species Praunus flexuosus ate yolk-sac larvae more than other mysids and most efficiently. Mysids switched to feed on eggs when larvae and eggs were offered simultaneously, thus predation focused on eggs. It is possible that hydrodynamic signals of moving larvae induced mysids to prey and eggs were easier prey to catch as well as more numerous. In addition egg size is optimal and the nutritive value (measured as C:N ratio) is better compared with larvae. The results indicate that mysids may have local effects on populations of Baltic herring by eating the early life stages, mostly eggs. Especially when large swarms of N. integer shoal in the spawning areas. However, the effect on recruitment of herring is still hard to evaluate.  相似文献

Fish eggs of successive stages of embryonic development, which were identified as belonging to specimens of Commerson's anchovy Stolephorus commersonnii through comparative molecular techniques, were collected from Leqing Bay, Zhejiang, China. Some eggs were reared artificially to obtain samples of successive developmental stages of larvae. The fertilized eggs of S. commersonnii are ellipsoidal and non-adhesive. The surface of the egg membrane is smooth and the perivitelline space is narrow. There is a single oil globule in the irregularly segmented yolk. Newly hatched larvae are transparent and devoid of pigments. Development of the larvae occurs in the following sequence: 8?h after hatching, the anus unfolds; 12?h after hatching, the pectoral fins emerge; 24?h after hatching, the liver and branchial arches emerge, and the alimentary canal differentiates into the oesophagus and intestinal canal; 30?h after hatching, the eyes become pigmented; 36?h after hatching, the upper and lower jaws become distinct; 42?h after hatching, the stellate melanophores emerge; 72?h after hatching, the postlarval developmental stage begins with the emergence of the dorsal fin. Based on the morphology of eggs and larvae of S. commersonnii, a taxonomic key to fish eggs of the Clupeidae and Engraulidae off China is established to provide an efficient and convenient way to identify the egg specimens. The fish eggs of the Clupeidae and Engraulidae off China could be identified to some extent by the buoyancy, shape and diameter of eggs, the number of layers in the egg membrane, the size of the perivitelline space, the number and diameters of oil globules, and the distribution of pigments. Meanwhile, their prelarvae could be identified by the number and diameters of oil globules, the distribution of pigments, the location of the anus and the number of myomeres.  相似文献

Fertilized eggs ofPleuronichthys cornutus were obtained by both artificial fertilization and natural spawning of laboratory-reared fish. The present paper describes in detail the early development of the fish and the rearing methods employed to provide basic information for mass production of this species. Eggs and sperm for artificial fertilization were obtained from adult fish caught in the Ariake Sound, Kyushu in November and December of 1984. Their maturation was successfully induced by intermuscular injection of pituitary homogenate of the silver carp,Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. Fertilized eggs were also obtained in 1985 by natural spawning of a broodstock kept in a tank for a year. Hatched larvae were fed successively with rotifers,Artemia nauplii and the harpacticoid copepod,Tigriopus japonicus and reared for 80 days. Ten thousand young fish of about 33 mm TL were obtained in 1984 and 1985 with the survival rate of about 17%. Ten developmental stages were defined on the basis of the morphological characteristics: A) newly hatched to 4 day old larvae, 2.7 to 4.1 mm TL (2.6 to 3.9 mmNL), yolk sac present; B) 4 to 16 day old larvae, 3.8 to 5.9 mm (3.6 to 5.6 mm), yolk resorbed, actively feeding on rotifers; C) 15 to 30 day old larvae, 6.3 to 8.3 mm (6.0 to 7.9 mm), notochord straight, hypural fin ray visible; D) 24 to 40 day old larvae, 6.7 to 9.2 mm (6.4 to 8.8 mm), caudal notochord upturned (45°); E) 28 to 45 day old larvae, 7.9 to 10.8 mm (7.5 to 10.3 mm), caudal notochord upturned (45°–90°); F) 32 to 50 day old larvae, 10.8 to 15.7 mm (8.8 to 12.8 mm BL), eyes symmetrical; G) 35 to 66 day old larvae, 13.4 to 20.0 mm (10.9 to 16.3 mm), eyes asymmetrical, but left eye not visible from the right side; H) 40 to 75 day old larvae, 13.8 to 26.2 mm (11.3 to 21.4 mm), the upper edge of left eye visible over top of the head from the right side; I) 46 to 89 day old larvae, 20.1 to 27.4 mm (16.4 to 22.4mm), left eye on the edge of the head and pupil visible from the right side; and J) juveniles of 51 day old or over, 23.6 mm or more (19.3 mm or more), metamorphosis completed. One to three inflections were found for relative growth of total length, eye diameter, upper jaw length, preanal length, and distance between the base of the pectoral fin and the anus against the notochord length or body length. Two inflections were found for body length (or notochord length)-body weight relationship. Most inflections appeared at the stages of D, F and J, corresponding to the body length of 8, 9–12 and 18–22 mm respectively.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that the production of diapausing eggs in Daphnia can be induced by fish kairomones. A population of Daphnia could survive severe predation using this predator avoidance strategy. However, in changing environments, diapausing eggs experience various temperature conditions, and hatchlings at emergence may be exposed to the same predation risks as their mothers. Therefore, staying in diapause or an immediate response upon hatching to available environmental information could be important for hatchling survival. For this study, we investigated the impact of water temperature (10, 15, 20, and 25°C) in the presence and absence of fish kairomones (Lepomis macrochirus) on the hatching success of resting eggs (D. galeata). Results show that no diapausing eggs hatched at the lowest temperature (10°C), and the highest hatch percentage occurred at 15°C. Although higher water temperatures reduced hatching success, diapausing eggs hatched more quickly. The number of hatchlings was significantly higher after exposure to fish kairomones, and this was more noticeable at higher temperatures (20 and 25°C). The present results suggest that the diapausing eggs were produced as a predator avoidance strategy in Daphnia; however, the presence of fish works as a positive signal to increase hatchlings when the diapausing stage is terminated.  相似文献

Development time, survival and final nutrient content of Hermetia illucens L. larvae depends on the substrates in which they develop. Mixing different waste types together can increase the performance and survival of the larvae, as well as their waste reduction. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different ratios of mixed fruit and vegetable waste with poultry manure on larval development time, size, biomass production, survival, bioconversion and waste reduction. Freshly hatched neonates (90 mg; approx. 6000 individuals) were placed on 12 kg of a mixture of fruit and vegetable waste and fresh, unprocessed poultry manure and held at 28 ± 0.5°C. Inclusion of fruit and vegetable waste varied from 0% to 100% in 10% increments. Initial temperature of the substrate was also measured. The individual mass of larvae increased significantly as more fruit and vegetable waste was included, from less than 81.3 ± 6.6 mg on poultry manure only to an average size of 211.6 ± 6.0 mg at 100% fruit and vegetable waste. After approximately 60% inclusion of fruit and vegetable waste the performance and survival of the larvae increased significantly while development time was reduced. A combination of high fruit and vegetable waste and low initial temperatures resulted in lower development time overall. The mixing of wastes can be applied in industry to further the goals of waste reduction and biomass production while incorporating low-quality wastes like poultry manure.  相似文献

Acute injections of different hormones to induce ovulation in mature ocellated puffer, Takifugu ocellatus, collected from natural waters during the spawning season, were carried out to develop a reliable protocol for mass production of seed in this species. All experimental fish were divided into seven groups treated with: a saline injection (control), single or two injections of luteinizing hormone‐releasing hormone analog (LHRH‐a; single injection: 50 μg kg?1, two injections: 10 and 40 μg kg?1), single or two injections of pituitary (single injection: 6 mg kg?1, two injections: 1 and 5 mg kg?1) and single or two injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG; single injection: 2500 IU kg?1, two injections: 500 and 2000 IU kg?1), respectively. The percentage of fish that ovulated in six hormonal treatments reached 100%, either with a single injection or with two injections whereas the fish in control group failed to spawn. There were no significant differences among all hormonal treatments in egg production, fertilization rate, or hatch rate (P > 0.05) except time to ovulation between a single injection group and the two‐injection group (P < 0.05). The fertilized eggs of ocellated puffer were spherical, demersal, and adhesive. They had a mean oocyte diameter of 1.487 ± 0.106 mm (range: 1.404–1.560). The egg membrane was transparent and yolk was buff in color, containing a cluster of small oil globules. Thirty‐four successive stages of embryonic development were identified and characterized. Fertilized eggs incubated at 18–20°C generally commenced hatching at 144 h after fertilization. Newly hatched larvae were about 3.26–3.45 mm in length. The induced ovulation technique using acute injections of hormones is an important step in the development of the culture of the ocellated puffer.  相似文献

In the field and also in the laboratoryOligotricha striata trichopteran larvae were observed to feed onRana temporaria eggs. Laboratory experiments revealed thatO. striata larvae preferred amphibian eggs to plant matter. The jelly-like sheath of the eggs was easily penetrated. A larva consumed 1 to 2 eggs per day. The fatty acid metabolism in fish is influenced by various factors, including fish species, water temperature, water environment and diet supply. The aim of present work is to investigate the fatty acid composition of yolk‐stage Siberian sturgeon larvae reared at three different temperatures. Fertilized Siberian sturgeon eggs were transferred to the Lodi Aquaculture Research Center of the University of Milan, divided in three aquaria, each containing three incubators and incubated at 16°C. After hatching the temperature was switched to 16, 19 and 22°C. Larvae sampling was performed at the end of yolk sac reabsorption. No feed was dispensed during the trial. Eggs and larvae were weighed and fatty acid profile was determined by GC‐FID analysis after lipid extraction by chloroform/methanol mixture and fatty acid transesterification by methanolic hydrogen chloride. The fertilized eggs had a weight of 23.27 mg and a lipid content of 2.67 mg/egg. At hatching, the weight was 12.2 (0.17 SD) mg and lipid content 1.9 (0.6 SD) mg/larva. At the end of the trial, larvae mean weight was 33.6 (3.6 SD), 34.7 (1.8 SD) and 36.9 (1.1 SD) mg, while lipid content was 2.0 (0.3 SD), 2.1 (0.3 SD) and 2.0 (0.2 SD) mg for larvae reared at 16, 19 and 22°C respectively, without statistically significant difference. Larvae subjected to the highest water temperature showed a faster yolk‐sac absorption. No differences were found across temperatures regarding survival rates and regarding ontogenic development. The fatty acid composition of larvae was affected by the temperature. Larvae reared at 16°C had the lowest amount of saturated fatty acids, mainly due to a lower palmitic acid content, that was offset by a higher level of linolenic and linoleic acid, if compared with larvae reared at 19°C and 22°C. The study suggests that at a lower temperature sturgeon spare unsaturated fatty acid consuming preferably saturated fatty acids, increasing our knowledge of the fatty acid metabolism in this species.  相似文献

Mass rearing of Orius laevigatus on non‐insect foods could substantially increase the cost‐effectiveness of the production of this biological control agent which is largely based on the use of expensive eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth Ephestia kuehniella. In this study, the effect of substrate quality and predator density on nymphal development of O. laevigatus fed on E. kuehniella eggs, honeybee pollen or an egg yolk based artificial diet was assessed using several types of substrates as shelter materials in the rearing containers (wax paper, bean pod or no extra substrate). In general, E. kuehniella eggs proved to be a nutritionally superior food compared to pollen and artificial diet. Pollen supported nymphal development of O. laevigatus better than the artificial diet. Overall, increasing nymphal density resulted in higher mortality, which may be due in part to cannibalism. The addition of a bean pod compensated for the nutritionally suboptimal artificial, but had a negative effect when O. laevigatus was fed on pollen. The non‐insect foods tested could not adequately replace lepidopteran eggs as a food source for O. laevigatus but they may be useful as an alternative food or in a part of the rearing process.  相似文献

The reproductive and feeding biology of 314 Schilbe intermedius Rüppell 1832 collected in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, between April 1985 and February 1986 during low, intermediate and high water level were investigated. S. intermedius matures at 130 mm standard length and is a monocyclic spawner. Females predominate in the population and have an average fecundity of 27107 eggs. In the northern riverine floodplain of the Delta fish spawn in mid-summer during the peak flood. In the southern drainage rivers fish spawn in spring, which is two to three months after the arrival of the winter flood waters. S. intermedius is an opportunistic predator with a diet consisting largely of fish 41%, aquatic larvae 25%, terrestrial insects 14%, aquatic insects 7% and crustacea 5%. Juvenile S. intermedius feed predominantly on insect larvae, while adults are largely piscivorous.  相似文献

Rough scad Trachurus lathami is a key pelagic fish in the Argentinean continental shelf (ACS, south-west Atlantic Ocean), with recent increases in abundance. It is a main prey of fishes and marine mammals, and shares the environment with commercially relevant pelagic species (Engraulis anchoita and Scomber colias), playing an important role linking lower and upper trophic levels in the ecosystem. This study aims to determine the ontogenetic changes in the diet composition, feeding strategy, trophic niche breadth and trophic level of T. lathami in the North Patagonian Shelf (43°–45°30′S). The stomach contents of adult fish (n = 238) were analysed. The results suggest a clear ontogenetic shift in the diet at a size of ~190 mm. Smaller individuals (160–190 mm) were specialized on misidaceans, and showed the highest trophic level, while larger T. lathami (221–230 mm) consumed decapods (Peisos petrunkevitchi) and teleosts (eggs and larvae). Trophic niche breadth was higher at the medium-sized class (191–220 mm), which mainly preyed on copepods (Calanoides carinatus) and chaetognaths (Sagitta spp.), evidencing a more diverse diet and a rather generalist strategy. Ladigesocypris ghigii (Gianferrari, 1927), commonly called gizani, is an endangered freshwater fish endemic to the Greek island of Rhodes. The spawning behaviour of gizani was studied in aquaria, to develop an artificial breeding technique for this endangered species. Spawning in captivity was recorded over 41 spawning days between 15 February and 14 July 2001, under constant temperature (18 or 21°C) and photoperiod 14L/10D. The number of spawning acts in a day was 82 ± 28. No aggressiveness and no territoriality were developed. The mating system of the fish was polygamous, with females spawning more than once. In captivity, eggs are laid either on aquatic plants or on gravel, while in nature fish spawn mainly on algae and plants. The latter suggests that, as far as breeding substrate is concerned, gizani is an opportunistic species using different substrates when necessary.  相似文献
