Underwater noise is increasing globally, largely due to increased vessel numbers and international ocean trade. Vessels are also a major vector for translocation of non-indigenous marine species which can have serious implications for biosecurity. The possibility that underwater noise from fishing vessels may promote settlement of biofouling on hulls was investigated for the ascidian Ciona intestinalis. Spatial differences in biofouling appear to be correlated with spatial differences in the intensity and frequency of the noise emitted by the vessel’s generator. This correlation was confirmed in laboratory experiments where C. intestinalis larvae showed significantly faster settlement and metamorphosis when exposed to the underwater noise produced by the vessel generator. Larval survival rates were also significantly higher in treatments exposed to vessel generator noise. Enhanced settlement attributable to vessel generator noise may indicate that vessels not only provide a suitable fouling substratum, but vessels running generators may be attracting larvae and enhancing their survival and growth. 相似文献

Abstract Flowing water delivers planktonic larvae to surfaces, but also dislodges them. This paper reviews experiments in the field and in laboratory flumes, as well as mathematical models, which have revealed how the interaction of ambient water motion with a developing fouling community affects larval settlement. Although mean current velocities across fouling communities in harbours are low, instantaneous velocities can be much higher due to turbulence and to the velocity oscillations of wind chop and ship wakes. As a fouling community develops, its topography becomes more complex and the range of flow microhabitats on the spatial scale of larvae increases. In spite of the prevalence of waves in shallow coastal habitats, and in spite of the importance to settlement of the fine-scale instantaneous velocities encountered by larvae, most studies of flow effects on larval settlement have focused on unidirectional currents and on temporally- and spatially-averaged aspects of the flow. 相似文献

As a result of their rapid expansion and large larval host range, true fruit flies are among the world's most important agricultural pest species. Among them, Ceratitis capitata has become a model organism for studies on colonization and invasion processes. The genetic aspects of the medfly invasion process have already been analysed throughout its range, with the exception of Australia. Bioinvasion into Australia is an old event: medfly were first captured in Australia in 1895, near Perth. After briefly appearing in Tasmania and the eastern states of mainland Australia, medfly had disappeared from these areas by the 1940s. Currently, they are confined to the western coastal region. South Australia seems to be protected from medfly infestations both by the presence of an inhospitable barrier separating it from the west and by the limited number of transport routes. However, numerous medfly outbreaks have occurred since 1946, mainly near Adelaide. Allele frequency data at 10 simple sequence repeat loci were used to study the genetic structure of Australian medflies, to infer the historical pattern of invasion and the origin of the recent outbreaks. The combination of phylogeographical analysis and Bayesian tests showed that colonization of Australia was a secondary colonization event from the Mediterranean basin and that Australian medflies were unlikely to be the source for the initial Hawaiian invasion. Within Australia, the Perth area acted as the core range and was the source for medfly bioinvasion in both Western and South Australia. Incipient differentiation, as a result of habitat fragmentation, was detected in some localized areas at the periphery of the core range. 相似文献

Summary A simple, continuously circulating fed-batch culture system of microorganisms was designed and used to study the adhesion of mixed microbial cultures to surfaces of 316 stainless steel, Admiralty brass, and wood. The adhesion of the microbes to the surfaces was monitored by scanning electron microscope analysis. Eighteen non-toxic, non-ionic, or anionic surface-active compounds were tested for efficacy as inhibitors of microbial adhesion to stainless steel and wood surfaces. A rating system was devised to correlate efficacy with the degree of biomass adhered to 316 stainless steel, although correlation could not be made with wood. A correlation was also found between the ability of a compound to lower surface tension and its ability to prevent microbial adhesion. 相似文献

The serpulid Hydroides elegans is recognized as an invasive species in many harbour areas of the world, growing mainly on man-made structures such as pier pilings, where native diversity is low. In addition, because they build large aggregations of calcareous tubes, this increases the maintenance and fuel costs of vessels. While H. elegans is well known for the North Atlantic, Europe, Caribbean and Pacific Ocean, detailed information of the species for the South Atlantic is missing. In the last decade, owners of boats moored at the Clube Naval Charitas (CNC), in the Guanabara Bay, southeastern Brazil noticed an increase in the occurrence of an encrusting organism that we identified as H. elegans. In this study we characterize H. elegans specimens from CNC and Itaguaí Harbor, both in southeastern Brazil, and discuss its distribution in the world. In addition, we deployed PVC panels at two different depths to quantify how H. elegans affects community assembling over two months. We observed that H. elegans could dominate hard substrata in the intertidal zone, occupying more than 50% of the available substrata. Considering the damage caused by H. elegans elsewhere and the ability of the species to monopolize space in the intertidal zone demonstrated here, accurate taxonomic information is essential for future monitoring and management of the species in Brazil and the South Atlantic. 相似文献

The rate of biological invasions is steadily increasing, with major ecological and economic impacts accounting for billions of dollars in damage as a result. One spectacular example is the western Atlantic invasion by lionfishes. In the Mediterranean Sea, invasions from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal (termed Lessepsian invasions) comprise more than 100 fish species, including a recent invasion by lionfish. In light of the devastating effects of lionfish in the Caribbean Sea, understanding the dynamics of Mediterranean lionfish invasion is crucial. The Lessepsian lionfish invasion started in 2012, and rapidly spread to the central Mediterranean. Here, we used thousands of RAD seq genomic markers to study the population dynamics of this invasion. While we did not find a reduction in genetic diversity between source (Red Sea) and invasive (Mediterranean) populations (i.e., bottleneck effects), we found evidence of population structure within the invasive range in the Mediterranean Sea. We found that loci that are potentially under selection may play an important role in invasion success (in particular, genes involved in osmoregulation and fin spine sizes). Genomic approaches proved powerful in examining the ecological and evolutionary patterns of successful invaders and may be used as tools to understand and potentially mitigate future invasions. 相似文献

Acoustic pulses generated by an electrical discharge (pulsed acoustics) were investigated as a means for biofouling control in two test formats, viz. a 5/8\" outside diameter titanium tube and a mockup heat exchanger. The pulsed acoustic device, when operated at 17 kV, demonstrated 95% inhibition of microfouling over a 20 ft length of titanium tube over a 4-week period, comparable to chlorination in combination with a high-velocity flush. The pulsed acoustic device inhibited microfouling over a downstream distance of 15 ft, therefore, a single pulsed acoustic device is theoretically capable of protecting at least 30 ft of tube from microfouling (15 ft on either side of the device). A correlation between acoustic intensity in the frequency range 0.01-1 MHz and the level of biofouling inhibition was observed. The threshold acoustic intensity for microfouling inhibition was determined for this frequency range. It was also observed that the orientation of the device is critical to obtaining microfouling inhibition. 相似文献

目的观察血管内皮生长因子受体3(vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3, VEGFR-3)蛋白在大鼠第15d胚胎和第21d胚胎皮肤淋巴管和血管内皮的表达水平,探讨VEGFR-3在胚胎淋巴管和血管发生发育中的生物功能.方法应用免疫组织化学技术(SABC法)对大鼠第15d和第21d胚胎共61例皮肤样本进行抗鼠VEGFR-3免疫组织化学染色,观察VEGFR-3在皮肤淋巴管和血管内皮细胞的表达情况.结果大鼠胚胎皮肤淋巴管和血管内皮细胞均阳性表达VEGFR-3蛋白,VEGFR-3蛋白在大鼠胚胎第15d、胚胎第21d皮肤淋巴管内皮细胞的阳性表达率分别是38.71%(12/31)和73.33%(22/30),第21d胚胎皮肤淋巴管VEGFR-3蛋白的表达水平明显高于第15d胚胎皮肤淋巴管VEGFR-3蛋白的表达水平(P<0.01).VEGFR-3蛋白在大鼠胚胎第15d、胚胎第21d皮肤血管内皮细胞的阳性表达率分别是48.39%(15/31)和46.67%(14/30),第15d和第 21d胚胎皮肤血管VEGFR-3蛋白的表达水平之间无明显差异(P>0.05).结论随着大鼠胚胎的发育,VEGFR-3蛋白在皮肤淋巴管的表达水平表现为明显上升的趋势,提示VEGFR-3在淋巴管发生发育中的作用逐渐增强. 相似文献

Fierce competition exists between most stem‐twining lianas and the trunks of host trees. However, Merremia boisiana, a vigorous invasive twining liana, never strangles the host tree. Here, we investigated how M. boisiana stems adjust their twining growth to avoid intense competition with host trees, and how hydraulic conductivity is maintained for rapid asexual reproduction. We evaluated the effects of competition on twining M. boisiana stems (Em) and host tree trunks (Eh), compared differences in secondary growth between twining and creeping M. boisiana stems, calculated the total number of vessels (Nt), vessel density (Vmm−2), average vessel diameter (VDave), and percentage of vessels wider than 300 μm in diameter (P300) in the secondary xylem, and traced how these parameters change with increasing cross‐sectional area of stem (SA). The results showed that twining M. boisiana stems were competitively weaker, and mean Em (14.3%) was 21 times greater than that of Eh (0.7%). Secondary growth along the normal direction of the contact surface was significantly inhibited in stems twining on host trees. The lateral secondary growth of these stems was active, forming secondary vascular rings and/or arcs with abundant large vessels. Secondary growth in the central vascular cylinder was also significantly limited in extremely flat twining stems. Nt was positively and linearly correlated with SA. Vmm−2 and VDave fluctuated greatly in younger stems and tended to be stable in older stems. Nt and Vmm−2 did not significantly differ between twining and creeping stems, while VDave and P300 were both higher in twining stems compared to creeping stems of the same size. In conclusion, well‐developed lateral anomalous secondary growth prevents twining M. boisiana stems from fiercely competing with their host trees, while stable vessel density and wider, newly formed, vessels ensured sufficient hydraulic conductivity for the rapid asexual reproduction of twining M. boisiana stems. 相似文献

Abstract: In 1986, we recorded the MV Arctic , CCGS des Groseilliers and MV Lady Franklin during routine icebreaking operations and travel to and from the mine at Nanisivik, Baffin Island, Northwest Territories, Canada. We found that the Arctic generated more high frequency noise than did the other vessels we recorded. Monitoring of vessel noise levels indicated that belugas and, probably, narwhals should be able to detect the high frequency components of Arctic noise at least as far as 25 to 30 km from the source. The ability of whales to detect the MV Arctic at long distances may explain why belugas and narwhals in Lancaster Sound seem to react to ships at longer distances than do other stocks of arctic whales. 相似文献

- We examined the competitive interactions between a native fruit fly species (Anastrepha obliqua Macquart) and the invasive medfly (Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann) when these co-occur on a shared mango fruit host (Mangifera indica L.).
- Using mango fruits of distinct levels of ripeness, we investigated both competition among larvae and among adult females for oviposition. We quantified competition by the numbers of eggs laid and the intensity of agonistic interactions between adult females.
- Interactions between immature fruit flies led to reduced size and number of emerged adults of both species. These impacts were felt more acutely in the native species.
- Interspecific competition between females led to fewer eggs laid on semi-ripe fruit by both species, which may be the result of niche overlap associated with oviposition.
- Intraspecific interactions between A. obliqua individuals led to intense agonistic behaviour, with a concurrent decrease in number of landings on these host fruits.
- These results suggest that the native species undergoes a partial niche displacement when facing the invasive species. A portion of the fundamental niche of A. obliqua remained unoccupied by the invading C. capitata, which may allow their coexistence under natural conditions.

We report the development of five microsatellite markers for the invasive North American native plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia (Asteraceae). An enrichment protocol was used to isolate microsatellite loci and polymorphism was explored with samples from 16 natural populations collected in the native range, across North America, and in an invaded area along the Rhône Valley in France. The biota of the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea has experienced dramatic changes in the last decades, in part as a result of the massive invasion of Red Sea species. The mechanism generally hypothesized for the 'Red-to-Med' invasion is that of natural dispersal through the Suez Canal. To date, however, this hypothesis has not been tested. This study examines the mode of invasion, using as a model the mussel Brachidontes pharaonis, an acclaimed 'Lessepsian migrant' that thrives along the eastern Mediterranean coast. Our findings reveal two distinct lineages of haplotypes, and five possible explanations are discussed for this observation. We show that the genetic exchange among the Mediterranean, Gulf of Suez and the northern Red Sea is sufficiently large to counteract the build up of sequential genetic structure. Nevertheless, these basins are rich in unique haplotypes of unknown origin. We propose that it is historic secondary contact, an ongoing anthropogenic transport or both processes, that participate in driving the population dynamics of B. pharaonis in the Mediterranean and northern Red Sea. 相似文献

During 2005 monthly samples of the solitary ascidian Herdmania momus were collected along the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts of Israel, in order to investigate possible differences in life
history strategies of the two populations. The samples were preserved, dissected, and measurements were made of length, total
weight, gonad weight, oocyte diameter and the occurrence of symbionts was recorded. Additionally, field surveys showed that
in the Mediterranean H. momus exclusively inhabit artificial substrates, and are common at greater depths than in Eilat (Red Sea). Individuals of H. momus in Eilat reproduced year round. Although individuals from the Mediterranean were significantly larger than individuals collected
in Eilat their gonad indices and oocyte diameter measurements indicate that they have a short reproductive season. Copepods
were found in 50% of the samples from both sites, while a pontoniine shrimp was found in 14% of the samples from Eilat only.
The marked differences between the native vs. non-indigenous populations of H. momus are attributed to differential food availability, water temperature, currents and wave exposure. The increasing evidence
of negative effects of non-indigenous ascidians on natural fauna from other regions in the world emphasizes the need for additional

This study extracted the soluble microbial products and loosely bound and tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances
(EPS) from suspended sludge from a membrane bioreactor, original and aerobically/anaerobically digested, and compared their
fouling potentials on a microfiltration membrane. The resistance of cake layer accounts for 95–98% of the total filtration
resistances when filtering the whole sludges, with anaerobically digested sludge presenting the highest resistance among the
three tested sludges. The tightly bound EPS has the highest potential to foul the membrane; however, the loosely bound EPS
contribute most of the filtration resistances of the whole sludges. The foulants corresponding to the irreversible fouling
have chemical fingerprints similar to those from loosely bound EPS, which have a greater predilection to proteins and humic

The growth of settled and metamorphosed larvae of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is clearly retarded when polystyrene plates are used as a substrate compared with the growth of those forms attached to PVC plates. Possibly, low molecular weight compounds are released into the aquatic environment by the polystyrene and these materials may have a strongly adverse effect upon the growth of young zebra mussels. There is no difference in colonization of young mussels between PVC and polystyrene plates if these plates are sufficiently overgrown with bacteria and algae. 相似文献

【目的】对污损生物膜细菌YT1305-1进行菌种鉴定;研究其作为污损生物膜优势菌之一的代谢产物。【方法】通过16S rRNA基因序列分析,结合系统进化树和细菌生理生化实验对菌种进行鉴定,通过硅胶柱层析分离方法和核磁共振检测技术分析其代谢物的化学成分。【结果】发现生物膜中存在明显的优势菌株,假交替单胞菌属为优势菌属之一。16S rRNA序列比对分析表明Pseudoalteromonas issachenkonii为优势菌种之一,将目标菌种命名为Pseudoalteromonas issachenkonii YT1305-1,对其代谢物化学成分进行分析,共得到10个化合物,其中包括5个二酮哌嗪(DKPs)类信号分子,环(甘氨酸-丙氨酸)(1)、环(脯氨酸-甘氨酸)(2)、环(脯氨酸-酪氨酸)(3)、环(4-羟基-脯氨酸-亮氨酸)(4)和环(4-羟基-脯氨酸-丙氨酸)(5),以及尿嘧啶(6)、胸腺嘧啶(7)、胸腺嘧啶脱氧核苷(8)、己二酸二(2-乙基己)酯(9)和邻苯二甲酸二(2-乙基己)酯(10)。【结论】污损生物膜中存在明显的优势菌,其中之一为P.issachenkonii YT1305-1,在其代谢产物中发现了疑似信号分子的物质DKPs,有研究表明该物质能调控生物膜的形成,进而影响生物污损的形成,为探究生物污损现象奠定了物质基础。 相似文献

Otolith increments in larval and juvenile windowpane Scophthalmus aquosus can provide an estimate of daily age for spring-spawned individuals held under summer conditions. Otolith increments for spring- and autumn-spawned individuals occurred at intervals >1 day under winter conditions. A significant decrease in the slope of the linear relationship between otolith size and somatic size at 40 mm LS coincided with significant habitat, morphological and behavioural transitions. In smaller, field-captured windowpane belonging to spring- and autumn-spawned cohorts, the formation of accessory growth centres coincided with a transitional settlement period and the completion of eye migration (c. 8–20 mm LS ). Back-calculated growth rate estimates for spring-spawned windowpane were significantly faster than those for autumn-spawned windowpane and these differences could produce differential rates of survival for the two cohorts during the first year of life. 相似文献
