A quantitative study was made of the displays of "angels" on the screen of a 23-centimetre radar installation on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The birds responsible for the displays were nocturnal migrants, mainly passerines.
Other things being equal, the density of angels decreased roughly exponentially with distance from the centre of the radar screen, being halved about every eight miles. The rate of decrease varied only slightly with total migration density, and could be used to estimate the total number of bird targets in the air.
Estimates obtained by this means were compared with estimates of migration density obtained from "moon-watching" observations, which were reduced by a new method of calculation which incorporates radar measurements of the height of flight. Each angel was found to correspond to between two and twelve birds. After considering and rejecting other explanations, it is concluded that many birds migrate in groups at night. There is evidence that many species (including Parulidae, Turdidae and Emberizidae) migrate in small groups, rather than a few species in large groups. Groups of passerine night-migrants are probably spread over a wide area, since it is rare to see two birds cross the moon together.
Once the average group-size has been determined in this way, radar can be used to measure the density of migration over a large area. Estimates of low migration density have a standard error about 25%, but estimates of high migration density are less accurate, and very high migration densities cannot be measured at all, although they can be accurately identified as such.
The results in this paper cannot be applied directly to other radar stations, nor to other species of birds.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of Shelduck Tadorna tadorna are described, based on the analyses of the viscera of 30 birds collected under special licence, and of 18 birds found dead or dying during the cold weather of 1963, on faecal material from eight incubating birds, on field observations and on the literature. The birds came from a number of different localities and from each month of the year, apart from July.
The mollusc Hydrobia ulvae (Pennant) was found in all 46 birds which contained food, and it is quite obvious, and this is confirmed by the literature and by faecal analyses, that this is the most important food item during much of the year and in many different localities. Other species eaten included the bivalve Macoma balthica , the amphipod Corophium volutator , the ragworm Nereis sp., the alga Enteromorpha , and occasionally the seeds of various plants.
The importance of H. ulvae is examined in the light of its distribution and numbers, which may be a strong controlling factor in concentrating Shelduck in certain areas at certain times of the year.
The feeding behaviour of Shelduck, and a number of other birds, is apparently closely related to the cyclic behaviour pattern of the main food species, H. ulvae .
It seems that Shelduck have a rather fixed type of feeding behaviour which exploits only one feeding niche and therein mainly one food item. Any event (prolonged gales or very cold weather) which prevents the bird from using that niche can be the cause of heavy mortality.  相似文献

Interacting with nature is widely recognised as providing many health and well-being benefits. As people live increasingly urbanised lifestyles, the provision of food for garden birds may create a vital link for connecting people to nature and enabling them to access these benefits. However, it is not clear which factors determine the pleasure that people receive from watching birds at their feeders. These may be dependent on the species that are present, the abundance of individuals and the species richness of birds around the feeders. We quantitatively surveyed urban households from towns in southern England to determine the factors that influence the likeability of 14 common garden bird species, and to assess whether people prefer to see a greater abundance of individuals or increased species richness at their feeders. There was substantial variation in likeability across species, with songbirds being preferred over non-songbirds. Species likeability increased for people who fed birds regularly and who could name the species. We found a strong correlation between the number of species that a person could correctly identify and how connected to nature they felt when they watched garden birds. Species richness was preferred over a greater number of individuals of the same species. Although we do not show causation this study suggests that it is possible to increase the well-being benefits that people gain from watching birds at their feeders. This could be done first through a human to bird approach by encouraging regular interactions between people and their garden birds, such as through learning the species names and providing food. Second, it could be achieved through a bird to human approach by increasing garden songbird diversity because the pleasure that a person receives from watching an individual bird at a feeder is dependent not only on its species but also on the diversity of birds at the feeder.  相似文献

SUMMARY
The Cattle Egret is a dry season visitor to Rokupr in Sierra Leone during the bird's non-breeding season. There are no cattle in the area to attract the herons and they obtain nearly all their food from small isolated areas of vegetable gardens which are associated with all the villages. The number of herons associated with each garden is closely correlated with the area of that garden and is about two birds per acre.
The daily life of the birds is discussed, in particular the pre-roosting assemblies and the flight to roost, and it is shown that each flock leaves for the roost at the same time each day, about 30–35 min. before dusk.
Observations made at a particular roost showed that all the Cattle Egrets reached the roost before dusk and from these observations, combined with those made on the feeding grounds, it is concluded that the number of Cattle Egrets using the roost is determined by the number and area of the feeding grounds that lie within 30–35 minutes flying time (about 12 miles) of the roost.

Bird-migration was observed 5 October-14 November 1942 along 150 km. of railway line between Salsk and Stalingrad (between the Sea of Azov and the Lower Volga). The typical steppe-birds of South Russia were recorded—larks, harriers, bustards etc.—and also astonishing numbers of crows, starlings, finches, thrushes, pigeons and others. Magpies, Yellow Buntings (many), sparrows, Crested Larks, Great Tits and Partridges also appeared as migrants.
Most birds were travelling southwest or south but the geese were going west (except for one flock), as were Redwings and part of the Great Bustards and Yellow Buntings. Eastward movement was rare.
The immediate destination of the birds observed can only be presumed, but those flying west would reach the coasts of the Sea of Azov and very likely continue further. Birds flying southwest and south were headed for the eastern half of the Black Sea, or the Caucasus. This range, which forms a very pronounced barrier, is well known to be crossed by migrants.
After the autumn sojourn another period of observation followed, 1–18 January 1943 (mostly between Proletarskaja and Salsk).
In all, 45 species were observed alive, and under telegraph wires birds of 25 species were found dead, including 10 not otherwise recorded.  相似文献

Monthly mist-netting of low-flying forest birds was conducted in three lake-shore forests in southern Uganda from September 1970 to July 1972. It was found that the edge of the forest formed a distinct ecological barrier that was rarely crossed by species on either side of it. Catches were concentrated in the hours of daylight, in two peaks, a morning peak at 09.00 hrs and an afternoon peak at 16.00 hrs (sun-time) for all birds combined, although there were slight species differences. Most bird species were found to be sedentary in a fixed home-range, and covered lateral distances of up to c. 300 m. No movement between the different forests was recorded.
The most common birds such as bulbuls were often caught at heights between 0·6 and 1·8 m above the ground, but the upper limit of their vertical range was not determined. It is suggested that the bi-modality of flight activity may be intrinsic, even though it may be correlated with such extrinsic factors as light and radiation. On a month to month basis, the numbers of birds caught reflected breeding and moult activity. This was best shown by the Pygmy Kingfisher, taken in higher numbers towards the end of the first rainy season when a majority of the birds caught were young and many birds were moulting the remiges. On the other hand higher numbers of Olive Sunbird were found during the second rainy season, again at a time corresponding to a general moulting of remiges. The bulbuls showed fluctuations in numbers caught that were matched by an equally fluctuating pattern of moult. The role of food as a possible limiting factor in bird breeding is discussed.  相似文献

The presence of 191 species, regarded as forest birds, was sought in ten forest reserves of south-west Nigeria. One of these reserves, Gambari, some 25 miles south of Ibadan, was visited 60 times and the species encountered each visit were noted. From these two series of data estimates of the dispersal and commonness of each species have been made, though not all the 191 species were met during the study.
A comparison has been made between the forest birds of southwest Nigeria with those of southeast Nigeria as recorded by Serle (1957).
The occurrence of Apalis nigriceps at Sapoba in Mid-western State and of Parmoptila woodhousei near Lagos are noted as showing a considerable westward extension of their formerly known ranges.  相似文献

Abstract The absence of small birds from many suburban areas may be due to adverse garden characteristics, interspecific aggression or human behaviour such as supplementary food provisioning that encourages predators. We investigated the relationship between these factors and the presence of seven small bird species in Sydney through a community‐based survey. The survey was conducted by participants over a 7‐day period between 7 am and 10 am in November and early December 2000. Three dominant species, the noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala), pied currawong (Strepera graculina) and common myna (Acridotheres tristis) were each present in over 59% of gardens. Each small bird species was present in less than 40% of gardens. All small birds were negatively associated with noisy miners, but only the silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) was negatively associated with pied currawongs. None of the species of small birds was negatively associated with common mynas. Four species of small birds were associated with at least one habitat variable, notably the proportion of native vegetation. Although more birds were recorded in gardens in which meat was provided, there were significantly fewer small birds in these gardens. There were also more birds recorded in gardens where seed was provided, with red‐browed finches (Neochmia temporalis) positively associated with seed provisioning in most regions of Sydney. The presence of dogs and cats was not related to the total abundance of birds overall or small birds in gardens. While garden characteristics may influence the presence of small birds to some degree, the presence of noisy miners, a species that are thought to aggressively exclude other species from their territories, is likely to be an important influence on these species in suburban areas. Furthermore, supplementary feeding by people is likely to negatively influence some small birds. The presence of carnivorous pets does not seem to influence the presence of small birds at the scale of the individual garden.  相似文献

In spite of a considerable literature on fruit-eating, the general evolutionary implications of fruit as a source of food for birds have been neglected. A preliminary attempt is made to explore the evolutionary and ecological consequences of fruit-eating, considered as a mutual interaction between parent plant and dispersal agent. The relationship considered is that obtaining between fleshy fruits and the “legitimate” fruit-eating birds which digest the fleshy part of the fruit and void the seed intact. Evolutionary aspects of seed-eating are also briefly discussed. The “strategies” adopted by fruits for dispersal by birds result in the production of abundant food supplies which are easy of access and exploitable by many species of birds. By contrast, the predation of birds on insects leads to a heterogeneous, sparse and cryptic food supply, to exploit which many different hunting techniques are necessary. Two important evolutionary developments in birds are attributed to these differences in food supply: there tend to be more species in families of insectivorous than of frugivorous birds, and lek behaviour in tropical forest has evolved in predominantly frugivorous birds. The seasonal succession of fruits in temperate latitudes is discussed, and contrasted with the situation in the tropics, using examples from Europe and Trinidad. In general, the succession of ripe fruits in Europe seems to be adapted to the seasonal shifts of the bird populations, and the more nutritious fruits tend to have a more southerly distribution and to ripen later than the more succulent fruits. In the tropics the distinction between nutritious and succulent fruits seems to be largely one of habitat. The constant succession of ripe fruits throughout the year in the tropics probably depends on competition for dispersal by frugivorous birds, which thus ensure the maintenance of their own food supply. This may be regarded as a symbiosis at the level of the ecosystem.  相似文献

Raptorial birds which depend on a small number of prey species, especially those living in open habitats in the tundra, semi-desert and desert belts of the Palaearctic, undergo local fluctuations in numbers which are synchronous with the fluctuations in numbers of their main prey species. In this they contrast with the asynchronous or lagging type of predator-prey oscillation which has received wider attention in the literature.
Evidence from ringing recoveries shows that the species which fluctuate locally in synchrony with their prey tend to move greater distances from their birth-place or previous breeding place than those with more stable populations. The former species also tend to be split into fewer sub-specifically distinct forms than the latter. It is argued that the species which are subject to a fluctuating food supply have evolved, as an important adaptation, the ability to undertake more or less extensive 'searching migrations', which enable them to find and settle in areas of adequate food supply, often far removed from the previous breeding area. In the longer evolutionary aspect, this ability may be a factor promoting food specialization.
The synchronous population fluctuations of raptorial birds with their prey are compared with the asynchronous or lagging oscillations of carnivorous mammals.  相似文献

Garden bird feeding predicts the structure of urban avian assemblages   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Households across the developed world cumulatively spend many millions of dollars annually on feeding garden birds. While beneficial effects on avian assemblages are frequently claimed, the relationships between levels of garden bird feeding and local avian populations are unknown. Using data from a large UK city, we show that both avian species richness and abundance vary across different socioeconomic neighbourhood types. We examined whether patterns in bird feeding could explain this variation. The density of bird feeding stations across the urban environment was strongly positively related to avian abundance, after controlling for differences in habitat availability. This effect was almost exclusively driven by the abundance of those species known to utilize garden feeding stations frequently. In contrast, the density of feeding stations had no effect on avian species richness. We also examined variation in the proportion of households in different communities that provide food for birds, a factor that is not correlated with feeder density. The prevalence of bird feeding across different neighbourhoods declined as socioeconomic deprivation increased, and increased with avian species richness and abundance. Our results suggest that the provision of supplementary food for birds by multiple landowners across a city can impact the status of urban bird populations. The potential for harnessing these actions for conservation needs to be explored.  相似文献

Very few quantitative data existed for the spring migration of birds across the Sahara desert. Observations covering 105 days in spring 1963–66 were made at Defilia, on the extreme northern fringe of the desert in southeast Morocco. The physical features and climate of the area are described, with brief reference to neighbouring desert zones. The birds recorded are listed in weekly or part-weekly totals, followed by subspecific and other comments on selected species.
The movements of migrants are summarized, together with the effects of adverse winds on migration; very bad weather along the northern desert fringe may contribute to the late arrival of some species in the British Isles (and presumably elsewhere in Europe) in spring by causing delays and heavy mortality. Most visible migration was northeastward or eastward, but substantial westward movements of hirundines took place.
Comparison is made with migration through other areas in Morocco and Algeria, both from existing literature and from previously unpublished data, which provide evidence of broad-front migration across the entire width of the Moroccan Sahara. Birds recorded in northwest Algeria in 1966 are listed, together with notes on physical features, climate and field observations. Many terns and waders were recorded at Daiat Tchiour, including some predominantly coastal species, which suggests that the latter were migrating on a great-circle track from winter quarters in West Africa across the Sahara to their breeding grounds in Siberia.
Recoveries of ringed birds are discussed; some of these, together with records of species well west of their normal migratory range, suggest that birds may be subject to lateral displacement by winds when crossing the Sahara, leading to considerable annual variation in species and numbers of birds recorded on the northern desert edge, even in the same place.  相似文献

A population of about 50 pairs of Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus nesting on Skokholm Island, S. Wales, was studied between 1963 and 1965. Other information on Skokholm Oyster-catchers over the last 25 years was also analysed.
The adults were trapped, colour-banded and sexed by bill measurements. With few exceptions, birds kept the same mates and territories from one season to the next. Apparently the male is responsible for retaining the territory. Some Oystercatchers breed at three years but most do not do so until four or five. It seems that there is a high population pressure, preventing young birds from establishing themselves. The annual adult survival in the two years was 88% and 90% respectively.
The average clutch-size on Skokholm is known for many years, and varied annually between 2.5 and 3.3. The number of c/4 varied greatly from year to year. There was a seasonal decline in mean clutch-size and also in egg and nest success. Predation, especially by Lesser Black-backed Gulls, was the main cause of egg loss.
In 1963, 36.7% of hatched chicks fledged and 59% in 1964. The larger clutches were more successful and produced more surviving young than did the more numerous smaller clutches. Early hatched young are more successful than later young.
The average yearly mortality of birds between fledging and breeding was 40%.  相似文献

ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF ADAPTIVE RADIATION IN BIRDS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Relatively few birds feed heavily upon green-plant materials, though a number may take substantial numbers of buds. Birds appear not to possess adequate gut biota to break down cellulose efficiently, and even it they did, this system would not be compatible with efficient flight, on account of the long processing times required. 2. Birds have stronger adaptations toward feeding upon seeds and make a particularly heavy impact upon seeds in trees and on those in widely scattered or unpredictable crops. 3. Several families, mostly of tropical distribution, feed primarily upon fruit. Again, they are most successful in exploiting resources reached only with difficulty by other groups. A similar pattern holds for nectar stores. In the case of fruit and nectar, evolutionary complications result because the plants compete for seed dispersers and pollinators. 4. Most primarily herbivorous species feed their young partially or totally upon insects or other animal foods. Only a few species are able to fledge upon an entirely herbivorous diet, and those that do so often have extremely long fledging periods, which subject their young to high rates of predation unless the parents nest in places inaccessible to predators. 5. In general, herbivorous birds make a heavy impact relative to other animals only when they exploit resources that the other groups have difficulty in obtaining (hard to reach, or widely scattered in space and/or time). 6. Insects are exploited by more families of birds than any other food category. Birds are of greatest relative importance in capturing insects on the wing and in arboreal locations. Other terrestrial invertebrates are probably taken by techniques similar to those used for insects. 7. A variety of species take invertebrate prey along the water's edge or in shallow water. 8. Almost without exception, vertebrate prey is of small size, in part a function of the size of birds. Occasionally predation upon small terrestrial vertebrates may be relatively heavy, generally in outbreak situations. 9. Several families feed exclusively upon fish, crustacea, squid, and other aquatic prey. Some indirect evidence suggests that exploitation of these resources may sometimes be heavy, though there is little evidence that these groups often make an appreciable impact upon this food source. 10. Birds appear to be among the most important scavengers of animal remains. 11. Like the herbivorous birds, carnivorous birds appear to exert their greatest impact upon resources that are hard to reach or are widely scattered in space and/or time. 12. One-third of the avian families feed regularly on a variety of resources, as recognized in Table I. Most of these families specialize upon resources located in certain areas (ground, water's edge, trees, etc.). Only 13% of these families regularly use such a wide range of foods that they transcend both of these considerations (food type, segment of the habitat). In very few cases (5 %) does this designation result from some species of a family specializing upon one category of food and others using a different category. 13. There have been few large (> 20 kg), primarily herbivorous birds, though there have been several large omnivorous species. Large carnivorous species have been even rarer. All of these large species have been flightless, and in most cases they have occurred when or where large mammals were scarce or absent. 14. Birds have made extremely limited use of subterranean areas, caves, or deep water, and adaptations facilitating other types of life appear to be virtually incompatible with success in these situations. All these areas are characterized by a rapidly decreasing food gradient. 15. Bats exploit certain, but not all, of the food resources regularly exploited by birds. The resources not used by bats that are exploited by birds are those that are available over a full 24 h period; thus, bats' nocturnal habits do not provide them with an advantage in exploiting them. 16. Insects also use some of the resources exploited by birds. With few exceptions, insects are smaller than birds or bats. Considerable indirect evidence is consistent with the argument that the segregation in time, resource type, and size of flying animals is at least in part caused by competition. 17. While selection for anti-predatory mechanisms can be surmised, the reciprocal density relationships frequently noticed between birds and other organisms suggest that they arise from competition, rather than predation. 18. Most information suggests that interactions between birds and other animals of the same trophic level are usually, though not invariably, over food. 19. The types of relationship existing between birds and other organisms described above are repeated in a variety of other animal groups, though they clearly are not ubiquitous in the animal kingdom.  相似文献

A survey was carried out on the prevalence of blood parasites in birds in the Mascarene Islands. Smears from 357 birds of 25 species in 12 families were examined, of which 150 (42%) were found to harbour blood parasites. The most common parasites were Leucocytozoon ; a new species, L. zosteropis , is described from the Grey White-eye Zosterops borbonica mauritiana. This parasite was observed in smears from 68 birds of three species: Z. borbonica, Z. chloronothos and Z. olivacea. Other species of Leucocytozoon identified were L. fringillinarum from fodies, sparrows and a bulbul and L. marchouxi from two doves.
Haemoproteus was found only in domestic pigeons Columba livia and identified as H. columbae. Plasmodium relictum, P. vaughani and an unidentified species with elongate gametocytes were found in Zosterops , and Plasmodium sp. of low infection observed in other hosts. Trypanosoma mayae is redescribed from the House Sparrow Passer domesticus and the Mauritius Fody Foudia rubra , and considered to be a valid species. A new species of trypanosome, Trypanosoma phedinae , is described from the Malagasy Swallow Phedina b. borbonica. Other birds were found to harbour low infections of unidentified species of trypanosomes. A small number of birds were infected with Atoxoplasma , haemogregarines and Rickettsia-like organisms. An unidentified organism with a predilection for eosinophils was observed in several Mascarene Swiftlets Collocalia francica.
The results are discussed in relation to the possible effects of the parasites on the birds of the Mascarene Islands and comparisons made with the results of similar surveys on other Indian Ocean Islands.  相似文献

The anatomy and histology of the proventriculus in several species of petrels were examined and compared with the conditions in other birds.
The proventriculus in petrels is comparatively very large and its mucosa is raised into longitudinal ridges; it thus has a much greater surface area than in other birds. The presence of lipoids other than triglycerides concentrated in large quantities, particularly in the outer parts of the epithelial cells of the proventricular glands of petrels, is demonstrated. Lipoids in the corresponding cells in other birds are minute in quantity.
The probability that these lipoids represent the stomach oil, or its precursor, immediately before secretion, is discussed and compared with other theories about the origin of the oil. The observations provide strong evidence, but not absolute proof, that the oil originates in the cells of the proventricular glands.
Suggestions about the possible function of petrel stomach oil are discussed. The oil may supplement the secretion of the preen gland; it may be an excreted by-product of the metabolism of excessively fat foods; or it may play an important part in water metabolism, especially in the nestling. Without further work, none of these theories can be upheld or refuted, and it is possible that all are partly correct, for they are not mutually exclusive.
Many petrels shoot stomach oil from the beak when they are disturbed. The possible origin of this habit from the escape reaction, found in many birds, of vomiting up the stomach contents when alarmed, is pointed out.  相似文献

The breeding success of Manx Shearwaters at Skokholm Island, Pembrokeshire, was followed in study burrows, and data on survival of the young were augmented by ringing large numbers as they were about to leave the island and recapturing them in later years.
The weight of the young at fledging and the date at which they leave affect their chances of survival; overall, as many as 30% of the young birds may survive to reach breeding age, which is thought to be normally about 5–6 years. Adult mortality varies between wide limits of about 5 and 20%, but juvenile survival appears to be of about the right order to balance adult losses.
The significance of the one-egg clutch is discussed. At the normal time of laying the female may not be able to obtain sufficient food to form a second egg. A two-egg clutch, laid at a later date, would not produce more surviving young since these would fledge too late in the season to have a good chance of survival.
The advantage of leaving the island at a heavy weight is discussed, and it is concluded that the fat stores laid down give heavy young a greater chance than light young of migrating a long distance without food. It is possible that the young may even reach their winter quarters (off Brazil) without having to feed on passage if they depart with enough stored fat.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Coli-aerogenes bacteria were seldom found on the foliage of a wide variety of garden plants, trees and shrubs, and field plants, including pasture, except where there was a possibility of contamination by insects, animals or dust. They were present in only a few instances on the flowering heads of hay plants (wind pollinated) but on almost all the flowers of garden plants (insect pollinated). Although cereal crops are wind pollinated, coli-aerogenes organisms were found on about one-third of the grains examined. The question of their origin on grain is discussed.
In a series of paired samples of soil and of the foliage of the covering vegetation, coli-aerogenes organisms were present in most of the soil samples, but were absent from the foliage except where animal contamination was possible, as in the case of grazed pasture.
With foliage samples unlikely to have been contaminated by animals, most of the coli-aerogenes organisms isolated were A. cloacae , but with grazed pasture E. coli predominated, indicating contamination by grazing animals.
The coli-aerogenes floras of garden flowers and cereal grains corresponded closely, consisting in each case largely of A. cloacae .  相似文献

Analysis of faunal remains from prehistoric southwestern pueblo sites reveals certain commonly occurring species of mammals and birds, the latter including ducks and geese, hawks and eagles, American Kestrel, Mourning Dove, owls, Horned Lark, Common Raven, and jays. This phenomenon is examined with the analysis of bird bones from four New Mexican pueblos located in north-central and west-central New Mexico. Recovered faunal remains date to specific periods between A.D. 1250 and the present. Over 70 species of birds represent various ecological situations; many of these species presently do not occur near the pueblos and a few occur only in the extreme southeastern portion of the state. Marsh and riparian areas along the river systems and richer grasslands on the floodplains would account for most of these species occurring near the sites prehistorically. However, rather than attribute unusual species to climatic change, trade, or long-distance hunting expeditions by the Indians, an alternative explanation is offered which attributes high species diversity to areas of human disturbance. Disturbed areas such as agricultural fields can increase species diversity in an area and aid in the range extension of many animals. The primary factor in this situation, besides the crops themselves, is believed to be insects, which attract other animals, particularly birds and their predators. In addition, field irrigation systems act to extend riparian growth from the river across the floodplain, creating habitats for these animals. Finally, certain groups of birds and mammals have developed a natural attraction to human settlements and agricultural areas and these include species whose remains commonly occur in prehistoric pueblo sites. The avifauna from these sites also reveals information on the prehistoric use of birds as inferred from bone modification, cut marks, burials, and articulated wings.  相似文献
