A survey of natural populations of the British ladybird Exochomus quadripustulatus revealed the presence of a single large, acrocentric, supernumerary (B) chromosome in all sites visited. Studies were confined to male meiosis, where more than one B was never found to accompany the six bivalents and neo-XY sex pair. The percentage of males possessing B chromosomes varied from 6.4% to 28.6% in 14 different populations. The sex ratios present in these populations also varied. In some equal numbers of males and females were present, in others there were significant excesses of females. A linear regression was found between the percentage of B chromosomes and the percentages of males and females in those populations. It is suggested that the B chromosomes are not in themselves responsible for the sex ratio differences found for similar differences in sex ratio have been found in related neo-XY species lacking B chromosomes. It is more likely that those factors affecting sex ratio are also responsible for affecting the frequencies of B chromosomes in different populations.  相似文献

Variation in the frequency of individuals of Xanthisma texanum with B chromosomes among populations at the local level and variation in the frequency and distribution through time of individuals with B chromosomes within populations was investigated in a small area of southwestern Oklahoma and adjacent Texas between 1974 and 1987. The chromosome numbers of 1,224 individuals were determined from meiotic material; 15.8% of these had B chromosomes, less than 1% had three or four B chromosomes; none had more than four B chromosomes. The frequency of plants with B chromosomes among all sites sampled ranged from 0 to 33% and from 0 to 25% in sites separated by only a hundred meters; large differences in sample size occurred. Even at the subsite level large differences in frequencies in plants with B chromosomes were found. Within single sites, B chromosome frequency was not constant through time: the pattern of change differed among subsites within populations. In some cases the frequency went to zero. No correlations between environmental parameters and B chromosome frequency were documented.  相似文献

Populations of Stylidium crossocephalum contain two common types of B chromosomes, macro B chromosomes and micro B chromosomes. The macro B chromosomes are telocentric, slightly smaller than the smallest A chromosomes and mitotically unstable. They have so far been found associated with 6 of the 16 stable genomes known in S. crossocephalum, occurring in populations covering a substantial portion of the species range. Micro B chromosomes are about one third the length of the smallest A chromosome, acrocentric and show some mitotic instability. They occur associated with 3 stable genomes in populations found in the more medial regions of the species range. Both types of B chromosomes generally show regular behaviour during meiosis, although when two or more are present their pairing efficiency is reduced when compared to the A chromosomes. In addition a single very large mega chromosome was found in a single cell of one heterokaryotypic plant. Its origin although conjectural at this stage may be of relevance in understanding the origin of macro and micro B chromosomes in this species.  相似文献

Meiosis was examined in PMC of 138 plants of the outbreeder Triticum speltoides (=Aegilops speltoides) and 175 plants of the closely related T. longissimum (= Ae. longissima), which is a selfer. Nine of the T. speltoides plants, originating fra two of the five Israeli populations under study, contained B chromosomes in addition to the normal complements (2n = 14). No supernumerary chromosomes were found in T. longissimum. — Plants were found carrying 1, 2 or 3 B chromosomes, which seem to be stable among PMC. Their size is 2/3 of the average length of the regular chromosomes, but otherwise they are similar in appearance. Pairing between Bs is common as bivalents and trivalents, but whether this association is ehiasmatic is not clear. There is a slight reduction in chiasma frequency of the regular complement in B-carriers compared to other plants from the same population. — The only other species in the wheat group reported to have B chromosomes in natural populations is also an outbreeder, namely T. tripsacoides (=Ae. mutica). The connection between outbreeding and B chromosomes might be significant.  相似文献

We used flow cytometry, chromosome counting and AFLP markers to investigate gene flow from the crop plant oilseed rape, Brassica napus (AACC) to wild B. rapa (AA) in the Netherlands. From 89 B. napus source populations investigated, all near cropping fields or at transhipment sites, only 19 contained a B. rapa population within a 2.5‐km radius. During our survey we found only three populations with F1 hybrids (AAC), as recognized by their nine extra chromosomes and by flow cytometry. These hybrids were all collected in mixed populations where the two species grew in close proximity. Populations with F1 hybrids were not close to crops, but instead were located on road verges with highly disturbed soils, in which both species were probably recruited from the soil seed bank. Many plants in the F2, BC1 or higher backcrosses are expected to carry one to eight C chromosomes. However, these plants were not observed among the hybrids. We further investigated introgression with molecular markers (AFLP) and compared sympatric B. rapa populations (near populations of B. napus) with control populations of B. rapa (no B. napus within at least 7 km). We found no difference between sympatric and control populations in the number of C markers in B. rapa, nor did we find that these sympatric populations closely resembled B. napus. Our data show that hybrids occur but also suggest no recent introgression of alleles from the crop plant B. napus into wild B. rapa in the Dutch populations studied.  相似文献

In varying lemmings from seven natural populations (from Bolshezemelskaya tundra to Chukotka Peninsula), the number of B chromosomes ranged from 0 to 15. In populations surveyed for several years, B chromosome frequencies were stable. Two laboratory colonies (founded by Dicrostonyx torquatus torquatus from the Polar Urals and D. t. chionopaes from Yakutia) produced more than 3000 animals, of which 1699 were karyotyped. A small excess of B chromosomes in the progeny over that in their parents was observed in each generation. Coefficients of transmission k 1 of additional chromosomes were on average 0.519 in D. t. torquatus and 0.511 in D. t. chionopaes. In oocytes I and II, an accumulation of B chromosomes was observed as compared to somatic cells ( k2 = 0.66). The reproductive output of animals from both laboratory colonies did not depend on size of the B genome. The reduction of body and scull sizes observed in animals carrying numerous B chromosomes may confer negative selective value in the conditions of the Extreme North. In general, the system of B chromosomes in D. Torquatus is well balanced and very stable, being apparently under strong genetic control.Translated from Genetika, Vol. 40, No. 12, 2004, pp. 1686–1694.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Gileva.  相似文献

Supernumerary chromosomes and an XX/XO mosaic individual of B. i. nemorivaga are described. The supernumeraries are small metacentric chromosomes and are stained all along their length in C-band preparations. They have morphology and staining characteristics similar to those observed in different populations of Rattus rattus. Extensive G-band similarity of the chromosomes of B. i. nemorivaga and R. rattus and the size, shape and staining behaviour of the supernumerary chromosomes in these genera suggest that they have acquired supernumeraries from a common ancestor.  相似文献

Summary Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed the presence of ribosomal RNA genes in paracentromeric regions of all A chromosomes and in the distal half of B chromosomes in embryonic cells from Moroccan specimens of the grasshopperEyprepocnemis plorans. The expression of these genes was monitored by the presence of nucleoli attached to each chromosome bivalent in diplotene cells from males collected from two different Moroccan populations and was compared to previous data of Spanish populations. Whereas only the nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) on S9–S11 and X chromosomes were active in the Spanish specimens. Moroccan individuals showed NOR activity in all chromosomes. The rRNA genes on the B chromosome were inactive in both populations. The S9 and S10 NORs were less active in Moroccan specimens than in Spanish specimen, which might be partly explained by the negative interdependence for expression of the S10 NOR with respect to those on L2 and X chromosomes. On the other hand, the X NOR was more active in Moroccan specimens than in Spanish specimens, and this might be partly due to the positive effect that the presence of B chromosomes has on the expression of this NOR. The implications of these observations on current models of NOR activity regulation are discussed.Abbreviation NOR nucleolus organizer region  相似文献

Diploid populations of Aegilops mutica and Aegilops speltoides containing B chromosomes have been used as male parents in crosses with aneuploid genotypes of Triticum aestivum to investigate the effect of B chromosomes on meiotic homologous and homoeologous chromosome pairing. F1 hybrids of T. aestivum/Ae. mutica and T. aestivum/Ae. speltoides segregated into four classes with regard to the degree of meiotic chromosome pairing, irrespective of the presence of B chromosomes. The B chromosomes do not introduce factors altering the level of pairing other than that due to the natural allelic and gene variation occurring in the diploids. Similarly no reduction in pairing of homologous chromosomes was observed in genotypes in which pairs of homologues co-existed with B chromosomes. However, a significant drop in chiasma frequency was observed in F1 hybrids of T. aestivum × Ae. mutica with B chromosomes and T. aestivum × Ae. mutica nullisomic for wheat chromosome 5D with B chromosomes, in temperature regimes of 12° C. No asynapsis occurred in similar hybrids in the absence of Mutica B chromosomes at low temperatures. The low-temperature sensitive phase lies early in the pre-meiotic interphase. In this instance the Mutica B chromosomes are interacting with specific gene loci of the A chromosomes. Synaptic pairing has been observed between A and B chromosomes in Ae. mutica. A high frequency of pollen mother cells with twice the number of chromosomes was observed in hybrids in the presence of Mutica B chromosomes due to failure of spindle formation at the last pre-meiotic mitosis. Meiotic spindle irregularities occurred in hybrids containing Speltoides B chromosomes. Hybrids of Ae. speltoides + B's X Ae. mutica + B's displayed the mitotic and meiotic spindle abnormalities introduced by the presence of the B chromosomes of each parent.  相似文献

The present study employed basic and molecular cytogenetic methods to characterize three populations of Parauchenipterus galeatus from the basins of the Paraná and São Francisco Rivers, and a region of connection between the two basins. Although the diploid number was equal to 58 chromosomes, variations in karyotype formula were detected among the populations. B chromosomes were detected only in the population from the São Francisco River. Heterochromatin was located in the terminal position in almost all the chromosomes and in the pericentromeric position in some acrocentric chromosomes in the three populations. A single nucleolus organizer region was detected by silver nitrate and 18S rDNA‐fluorescent in situ hybridization in the short arm of one subtelocentric pair in the three populations, varying only in the chromosome pair bearing this site. The 5S rDNA sites were located in two submetacentric chromosome pairs in the three populations, varying only in the chromosome pairs bearing these sequences. Classic and molecular chromosome markers, along with the context of the natural history of the formation of hydrographic basins, ecological aspects, and the geographic isolation of populations between hydrographic basins and within the same basin, were important contributions to the discussion on possible biogeographic relations among the populations of Parauchenipterus galeatus. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 648–656.  相似文献

Astyanax scabripinnis specimens from four distinct populations in Brazil were studied with respect to their karyotype macrostructure, nucleolar organizer regions, and 18S and 5S rRNA genes. The four populations showed a 2n = 50 chromosomes (3 M + 11 SM + 5 ST + 6 A pairs) and 1–2 B chromosomes. No chromosomal differentiations were observed between sexes. Although a karyotypic diversity has been characterized in this fish group, the populations now analyzed presented the same macrokaryotypic pattern. Chromosome mapping of 5S rDNA showed a total of eight sites located in four distinct chromosomal pairs, with no apparent differences among populations. A comparative study on 18S rDNA locations and Ag-NORs showed some secondary NOR sites that are not usually expressed in karyotypes and a probable differential NOR activity among populations. Correlations between these data, environmental conditions and B chromosomes are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary A composite linkage map of Brassica oleracea was developed from maps of four different populations, derived from 108 DNA, isozyme and morphological loci covering over 747 centimorgans in 11 linkage groups. Of these linkage groups, 8 were assigned to their respective chromosomes by alignment with gene synteny groups of B. oleracea. Distortions in segregation ratios increased with the level of divergence of the parents and were attributed to differentiation of parental chromosomes. Comparison of the individual maps demonstrates that the B. oleracea genome undergoes frequent chromosomal rearrangement, even at the subspecies level. Small inversions were the most frequent form of aberration followed by translocations. The former type of aberration could occur without a noticeable effect on meiotic behavior of chromosomes or on pollen fertility. The obvious deduction from the composite map is that a large fraction of the B. oleracea genome is duplicated, falling into three classes: randomly dispersed, linked-gene families, and blocks duplicated in non-homologous chromosomes. The genealogy of chromosomes sharing duplicated segments was formulated and indicates that B. oleracea is a secondary polyploid species derived from ancestral genome(s) of fewer chromosomes.  相似文献

Karyotype analysis of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans samples derived from Armenian and Turkey populations was performed using C-banding technique. Chromosome polymorphism was associated only with B chromosomes that were revealed in all studied populations. Six new B chromosome morphotypes were described. Four morphotypes were found only in Armenian populations. One morphotype was revealed only in Turkey populations. One B chromosome morphotype was present in Armenian and Turkey populations. B chromosomes derived from Asian populations consisted mostly from C-positive regions. In some of the B chromosomes small C-negative regions were also registered. Morphotypes of the B chromosomes derived from Armenian and Turkey populations drastically differed from the B chromosomes described in the Iberian Peninsula and North African populations. In contrast to the B chromosomes from Armenian and Turkey populations the B chromosomes from Spain populations contained C-positive and C-negative regions alternated in their arms.  相似文献

Four populations of Astyanax scabripinnis (Pisces, Characidae) were analyzed for B chromosome features. This species contains a metacentric macrochromosome (BM), similar in size to the first chromosome of the karyotype, besides two variant forms, a large submetacentric (BSM) and a small metacentric (Bm), both showing a reduced frequency. These variant forms were observed only in the populations from the Campos do Jordão region (São Paulo State, Brazil), although not present in all the populations sampled. The three B chromosome forms are heterochromatic and at least the BM and BSM are also GC-rich, as evidenced by C-banding and chromomycin A3 staining. In spite of the morphological similarity between the BM form and the first chromosome pair, they differ in the G-banding pattern, which does not favor a possible relationship among these chromosomes. FISH with a telomeric DNA probe evidenced signals on the terminal region of all chromosomes, including the Bs. Interstitial telomeric bands, indicative of some chromosomal rearrangements such as translocation or tandem fusion in the origin of the B chromosomes, were not observed. BSM and Bm are probable derivative B chromosome forms from an ancestral BM chromosome, showing a restricted occurrence and low frequency in the populations.  相似文献

Karyology and karyotype analysis were carried out on freshwater planarian populations of the Dugesia gonocephala group. The strains studied were all diploid with chromosomic number 2n = 16; n = 8. They came from 12 sites mainly localized on the west of the island of Sardinia. Three karyotypes indicated with the letters A, B and C were found in which eight homomorphic pairs of chromosomes were easily identified. In karyotype A all chromosomes are metacentric. Ten populations of the twelve examined showed this karyotype which appears to be the most common. In karyotype B the seventh pair of chromosomes is submetacentric. This karyotype is quite common having been previously found in another eight Sardinian localities. Karyotype C differs from the others in having submetacentric third and seventh pairs of the chromosome complement. It was found in only one locality. The differences observed between these three karyotypes could be interpreted either as sign of differentiation at species level, or as an intraspecific variation due to chromosome mutations (pericentric inversions). Three widely separated Malayan populations of Black rat, Rattus rattus diardii (Jentink), were found to comprise individuals with supernumerary (or B) chromosomes. The number of supernumeraries varied from 0 to 4. The incidence of B's in the three populations did not differ significantly. There was also no difference between the two sexes.  相似文献

Analysis of chromosome localization of three molecular markers, 18S-5.8S-28S rDNA, 5S rDNA and a 180 bp satDNA, showed that B chromosomes in the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans originated independently in Eastern (Caucasus) and Western (Spain and Morocco) populations. Eastern B chromosomes are most likely derived from the smallest autosome, which is the only A chromosome carrying the three markers, in coincidence with Caucasian B chromosomes. Western B chromosomes, however, lack 5S rDNA and are most likely derived from the X chromosome, which is the only A chromosome carrying the two remaining markers, always in the same order with respect to the centromere, as the B chromosome.Communicated by E.R. Brachycome dichromosomatica is an Australian native daisy that has two pairs of A chromosomes and up to three B chromosomes in some populations. A putative B-specific tandem repeat DNA sequence (Bd49) was isolated previously. Here we describe further characterisation of this sequence and investigate its possible origin. Southern analysis showed that all individual B chromosomes examined have highly methylated tandem repeats of Bd49 but differences in banding pattern for distinct B isolates suggested that the sequence is in a state of flux. Using in situ hybridisation, the sequence was shown to be located at the centromeric region of the B chromosome. Southern analysis of genomic DNA with Bd49 demonstrated that multiple copies of the sequence exist in the genomes of B. eriogona, B. ciliaris, B. segmentosa and B. multifida (none of which have B chromosomes) whereas other species tested (including 0B plants of B. dichromosomatica and 0B B. curvicarpa and B. dentata) have few or no copies. Genomic clones and Bd49-like sequences derived by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were obtained from five species but determination of phylogenetic relationships within the genus and inference as to the possible origin of the B chromosome were problematic because of extensive intragenomic heterogeneity of the sequences.  相似文献

The effect of B chromosomes (Bs) on various components of vigour and fertility inAegilops speltoides was studied. We designed three types of synthetic populations. In the first type we compared plants from the localities Haifa (which has Bs in nature) and Ashkelon (which has not). Non significant differences were found between the plants from both populations, and between B carriers and non carriers among Haifa individuals. In the second synthetic population we compared 0B, 1B, 2B, 3B and 5B plants from Haifa. We found that vigour variables were not affected by the presence of Bs, while fertility variables were significantly correlated with B number, in such a way that 1B plants produce more grains per plant than any other constitution, while 5Bs produce a remarkable deleterious effect. In the third type of synthetic populations we compared plants with 0B and 1B, 0B and 2B, 0B and 3B, and 0B and 5B. In this case we also found that 1B plants were the most fertile, but the variation of reproductive fitness was higher from plot to plot within the same B class than among B classes. We conclude that the effect of B chromosomes on the fitness variables that we have estimated is close to neutrality in this species. We discuss the relation between the strength of the mechanism of accumulation and the deleterious effects of B chromosomes.  相似文献
