Maternal investment of yolk and albumen in avian eggs varies with egg mass and contributes to variation in hatchling mass. Here we use the natural variation in mass and composition of Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) eggs to examine consequences of variation in yolk and albumen mass on hatchling phenotype. The Double-crested Cormorant, a large bird with altricial young, lays eggs ranging in mass from 40 to 60 g and containing an average of 82% albumen and 18% yolk. Variation in Cormorant egg mass arises primarily from variation in the amount of albumen and water in the eggs; yolk mass remains relatively constant, contributing only 10% to egg mass variation. Likewise, variation in hatchling mass correlates positively with albumen mass and albumen solids contribute to hatchling dry mass. Thus, variation in Cormorant egg mass is primarily the result of variation in the amount of egg albumen, which contributes most to variation in hatchling mass. Similarities in egg composition of altricial birds, along with data presented here, suggest that variation in hatchling mass of all altricial birds may depend most on the amount of egg albumen, unlike species with precocial young that hatch from eggs with substantially more yolk. 相似文献

The importance of avian egg components in the determination of hatchling size and quality has yet to be fully evaluated.
In the first experiment, 20% of the albumen and/or the yolk was removed from chicken eggs to determine the impact of each
egg component on metabolism and various size measures in near-term embryos. Results show that metabolic rate, dry body mass,
and internal organ mass are largely independent of egg composition. Removal of albumen resulted in a decrease in wet body
mass corresponding to decreases in water content in the body and the yolk sac, and decreased tibiotarsus length. Removal of
yolk resulted in no change in body mass, but decreases in both wet and dry yolk sac mass. In a second experiment, removal
of 15% of either egg component led to reductions in hatchling mass similar to those observed in whole near-term embryos. Albumen,
as the primary source of water in the egg, is the primary determinant of hatchling size and may influence hatchling success
through size-related limiting factors. Differences in yolk content may influence neonatal quality as a nutritional supplement,
but seem not to result in greater tissue formation during embryonic development.

Maternal investment in reproduction by oviparous non-avian reptiles is usually limited to pre-ovipositional allocations to
the number and size of eggs and clutches, thus making these species good subjects for testing hypotheses of reproductive optimality
models. Because leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) stand out among oviparous amniotes by having the highest clutch frequency and producing the largest mass of eggs per reproductive
season, we quantified maternal investment of 146 female leatherbacks over four nesting seasons (2001–2004) and found high
inter- and intra-female variation in several reproductive characteristics. Estimated clutch frequency [coefficient of variation
(CV) = 31%] and clutch size (CV = 26%) varied more among females than did egg mass (CV = 9%) and hatchling mass (CV = 7%).
Moreover, clutch size had an approximately threefold higher effect on clutch mass than did egg mass. These results generally
support predictions of reproductive optimality models in which species that lay several, large clutches per reproductive season
should exhibit low variation in egg size and instead maximize egg number (clutch frequency and/or size). The number of hatchlings
emerging per nest was positively correlated with clutch size, but fraction of eggs in a clutch yielding hatchlings (emergence
success) was not correlated with clutch size and varied highly among females. In addition, seasonal fecundity and seasonal
hatchling production increased with the frequency and the size of clutches (in order of effect size). Our results demonstrate
that female leatherbacks exhibit high phenotypic variation in reproductive traits, possibly in response to environmental variability
and/or resulting from genotypic variability within the population. Furthermore, high seasonal and lifetime fecundity of leatherbacks
probably reflect compensation for high and unpredictable mortality during early life history stages in this species. 相似文献

In diverse animal taxa, egg mass variation mediates maternal effects with long-term consequences for offspring ontogeny and fitness. Patterns of egg mass variation with laying order differ considerably among birds, but no study has experimentally investigated the function of variation in albumen or yolk egg content in the wild. In barn swallows (Hirundo rustica), absolute and relative albumen mass increased with egg laying order. Experimental albumen removal delayed hatching, had larger negative effects on growth of late-hatched nestlings, and reduced nestling survival. Laying order positively predicted hatch order. Because nestling competitive ability depends on size, and albumen egg content influences hatchling size, present results suggest that by increasing albumen content of late eggs mothers reduce hatching asynchrony and enhance growth particularly of late-hatched nestlings. Thus, variation in albumen mass with laying order may function to mitigate the negative phenotypic consequences of hatching late in species that adopt a 'brood-survival' strategy. 相似文献

This paper presents analyses of the composition (shell, yolk, albumen) and of the quality (lipid, protein and water contents) of yolk and albumen of eggs of 25 species of seabirds belonging to the Sphenisciformes, Procellariiformes, Pelecaniformes, and Lari of the Charadriiformes. These data are compared with those published for species in the same orders and suborders, and the combined seabird data are compared with published data for non-seabirds. Variation in the proportionate weight of eggshell is not related to hatchling precocity but is probably due to adaptive differences in nest substratum and the agility of the incubating birds. Lipid and protein contents of yolk, and water content of albumen, are uniform in eggs of all examined species. Protein levels of albumen and water content of yolk and of entire egg contents vary greatly between taxa. Contrary to previous claims there is no simple relationship between egg composition and hatchling precocity. Differences in egg composition will probably only be clearly understood when the nutritional needs of the embryo, and of the hatchling in the time before it regularly obtains food, are known. 相似文献

Eggs from three snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) were divided between two natural nests in a factorial experiment assessing the role of the nest environment as a cause for variation in body size and energy reserves of hatchlings at our study site in northcentral Nebraska. Nest # 1 was located in an unshaded area on the south side of a high sandhill, whereas nest #2 was located in an unshaded area on level ground. Eggs in nest #1 increased in mass over the course of incubation, with eggs at the bottom of the nest gaining more mass than eggs nearer to the surface. In constrast, eggs in nest #2 lost mass during incubation, with eggs at the bottom declining less in mass than eggs at the top of the cavity. Hatchlings from nest #1 were much larger (but contained smaller masses of unused yolk) than hatchlings from nest #2. Additionally, eggs from the lower layers in both nests tended to produce larger hatchings (but with smaller masses of unused yolk) than eggs from the upper layers. Thus, ecologically important variation in body size and nutrient reserves of hatchling snapping turtles results from variation in the environment among and within nests. 相似文献

Effects of egg size and composition on the size, quality and survival of lapwing Vanellus vanellus chicks 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
H. Galbraith 《Journal of Zoology》1988,214(3):383-398
The influence of egg size and composition on the size, quality and survival of lapwing chicks was examined on two farmland study sites in the Midland Valley of Scotland. Eggs comprised 33.1% yolk, 61.3% albumen and 5.6% shell. Whereas the yolk and shell proportions decreased with increasing egg size, the albumen proportion increased. Most variation in egg size was attributable to differences between females but was also influenced by clutch number (eggs in replacement clutches on the rough grazing, but not the arable, site were smaller), clutch size (eggs were smaller in smaller clutches), maternal body condition (females in good condition produced larger eggs) and habitat (since females on the arable site fed more successfully, they were in better condition and laid larger eggs). Chick size, weight and survival were all influenced by egg size. The incubation period varied between 21 and 28 days (mean = 25.2) and was shorter in clutches laid later in the season. 相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity and phenotypic stability are major components of the adaptive evolution of organisms to environmental variation. The invariant two-egg clutch size of Eudyptes penguins has recently been proposed to be a unique example of a maladaptive phenotypic stability, while their egg mass is a plastic trait. We tested whether this phenotypic plasticity during reproduction might result from constraints imposed by migration (migratory carry-over effect) and breeding (due to the depletion of female body reserves). For the first time, we examined whether these constraints differ between eggs within clutches and between egg components (yolk and albumen). The interval between colony return and clutch initiation positively influenced the yolk mass, the albumen mass, and the subsequent total egg mass of first-laid eggs. This time interval had only a slight negative influence on the yolk mass of second-laid eggs and no influence on their albumen and subsequent total masses. For both eggs, female body mass at laying positively influenced albumen and total egg masses. Female investment into the entire clutch was not related to the time in the colony before laying but increased with female body mass. These novel results suggest that the unique intraclutch egg size dimorphism exhibited in Eudyptes penguins, with first-laid eggs being consistently smaller than second-laid eggs, might be due to a combination of constraints: a migratory carry-over effect on the first-laid egg and a body reserve depletion effect on the second-laid egg. Both these constraints might explain why the timing of reproduction, especially egg formation, is narrow in migratory capital breeders. 相似文献

Geographic variation in offspring size can be viewed as an adaptive response to local environmental conditions, but the causes of such variation remain unclear. Here, we compared the size and composition of eggs laid by female Chinese skinks (Plestiodon chinensis) from six geographically distinct populations in southeastern China to evaluate geographic variation in hatchling size. We also incubated eggs from these six populations at three constant temperatures (24, 28 and 32 °C) to evaluate the combined effects of incubation temperature and population source on hatchling size. Egg mass and composition varied among populations, and interpopulation differences in yolk dry mass and energy content were still evident after accounting for egg mass. Population mean egg mass and thus hatchling mass were greater in the colder localities. Females from three northern populations increased offspring size by laying larger eggs relative to their own size. Females from an inland population in Rongjiang could increase offspring size by investing relatively more dry materials and thus more energy into individual eggs without enlarging the size of their eggs. The degree of embryonic development at oviposition was almost the same across the six populations, so was the rate of embryonic development and thus incubation length at any given temperature. Both incubation temperature and population source affected hatchling traits examined, but the relative importance of these two factors varied between traits. Our data show that in P. chinensis hatchling traits reflecting overall body size (body mass, snout‐vent length and tail length) are more profoundly affected by population source. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 283–296. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Investigators studying the relationship between egg size and young size often face difficulties in assigning particular young to particular eggs. We present a new method based on the use of separate net sacks for each egg that allowed us to study this phenomenon in Common Pochards ( Aythya ferina ) without excessive disturbance of breeding birds. We found a positive isometric relationship between duckling body mass and estimated fresh egg mass ( P < 0.001). However, we found no relationship between estimated fresh egg mass and structural measurements of ducklings (tarsus and bill length, both P > 0.29). In addition, we found a weak positive relationship between estimated egg mass and the size of ducklings ( P = 0.049). Greater hatchling mass typically means a larger yolk supply, and more yolk may provide energy crucial for survival during the first few days after hatching. In addition, ducklings with longer tarsi may be better swimmers and better at finding food and escaping from predators. Although our method has certain limitations and investigators should consider risks when applying it in over-water nests or in nests with large clutches, we believe it is a reliable way to assign young to particular eggs in waterfowl and possibly other bird species. 相似文献

Climate driven egg and hatchling mortality threatens survival of eastern Pacific leatherback turtles 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Egg-burying reptiles need relatively stable temperature and humidity in the substrate surrounding their eggs for successful development and hatchling emergence. Here we show that egg and hatchling mortality of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) in northwest Costa Rica were affected by climatic variability (precipitation and air temperature) driven by the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Drier and warmer conditions associated with El Ni?o increased egg and hatchling mortality. The fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects a warming and drying in Central America and other regions of the World, under the SRES A2 development scenario. Using projections from an ensemble of global climate models contributed to the IPCC report, we project that egg and hatchling survival will rapidly decline in the region over the next 100 years by ~50-60%, due to warming and drying in northwestern Costa Rica, threatening the survival of leatherback turtles. Warming and drying trends may also threaten the survival of sea turtles in other areas affected by similar climate changes. 相似文献

Lipid, protein, ash, carbohydrate and water content and energy density of eggs were measured from different clutches over a range of egg size in two species of freshwater turtle. Dry egg contents consisted of protein (54-60%), lipid (25-31%) and ash (5-6%) while carbohydrate was found to be negligible (<1%). Albumen consisted principally of water ( approximately 98%), and the dry component was composed of protein (47-51%), ash (19-26%) and lipid (18-21%), but contributed only a small amount ( approximately 2%) to overall dry egg contents. Energy density of dry albumen (15-17 kJ/g) was significantly lower than for dry yolk (26-27 kJ/g). Yolk consisted of 62-70% water, and the dry component was composed of protein (54-61%), lipid (25-31%) and ash (5-6%). Fractional concentrations of water, lipid, protein and ash and energy density remained constant over the range of egg size in Emydura signata eggs. In contrast, an increase in the yolk to albumen ratio and a decrease in water content of yolk as egg size increased caused the composition and energy density of Chelodina expansa eggs to vary systematically with egg size. 相似文献

Reproductive, phenotypic and life-history traits in many animal and plant taxa show geographic variation, indicating spatial variation in selection regimes. Maternal deposition to avian eggs, such as hormones, antibodies and antioxidants, critically affect development of the offspring, with long-lasting effects on the phenotype and fitness. Little is however known about large-scale geographical patterns of variation in maternal deposition to eggs. We studied geographical variation in egg components of a passerine bird, the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), by collecting samples from 16 populations and measuring egg and yolk mass, albumen lysozyme activity, yolk immunoglobulins, yolk androgens and yolk total carotenoids. We found significant variation among populations in most egg components, but ca. 90% of the variation was among individuals within populations. Population however explained 40% of the variation in carotenoid levels. In contrast to our hypothesis, we found geographical trends only in carotenoids, but not in any of the other egg components. Our results thus suggest high within-population variation and leave little scope for local adaptation and genetic differentiation in deposition of different egg components. The role of these maternally-derived resources in evolutionary change should be further investigated. 相似文献

Most models of parental investment in offspring assume a trade-off between propagule size and number, and an increasing concave down function relating offspring fitness to propagule size. In this study, we test these two fundamental assumptions, using three closely related species of crickets, Gryllus firmus, G. veletis, and G. pennsylvanicus. Egg weight, 35-day fecundity and 35-day egg biomass were estimated in a population of each species, and the relationships between these reproductive traits and date of egg laying and body size were estimated. The relationships between egg weight and offspring survival were also sought for eggs buried at different depths, soil moistures, and soil types (G. firmus and G. veletis), as well as in the field (G. pennsylvanicus). A trade-off between egg weight and 35-day fecundity was revealed in a multivariate analysis taking into account among-species variation in egg weight and body size. Independent of the environmental conditions affecting the eggs, a positive correlation existed between the number of larvae that emerged from the soil and propagule weight in each species. Therefore, these findings provide partial support for the assumptions considered in the models mentioned above. A single optimal egg size was favored in two out of the three sets of conditions in which the functions relating egg weight to larval survival could be derived. The conditions encountered by the eggs, however, influenced the average survival of the larvae, as well as the shape of the relationship between egg weight and offspring survival. This suggests that cricket eggs frequently face heterogeneous environments with respect to egg and hatchling survival; the implication of habitat heterogeneity on the evolution of an optimal egg size is considered. The relationships between the reproductive components and female age and size, as well as between egg size and variation in cricket life-history, are discussed in an ecological and evolutionary context. 相似文献

Snakes are free of the pelvic girdle's constraint on maximum offspring size, and therefore present an opportunity to investigate the upper limit to offspring size without the limit imposed by the pelvic girdle dimension. We used the king ratsnake (Elaphe carinata) as a model animal to examine whether follicle ablation may result in enlargement of egg size in snakes and, if so, whether there is a fixed upper limit to egg size. Females with small sized yolking follicles were assigned to three manipulated, one sham-manipulated and one control treatments in mid-May, and two, four or six yolking follicles in the manipulated females were then ablated. Females undergoing follicle ablation produced fewer, but larger as well as more elongated, eggs than control females primarily by increasing egg length. This finding suggests that follicle ablation may result in enlargement of egg size in E. carinata. Mean values for egg width remained almost unchanged across the five treatments, suggesting that egg width is more likely to be shaped by the morphological feature of the oviduct. Clutch mass dropped dramatically in four- and six-follicle ablated females. The function describing the relationship between size and number of eggs reveals that egg size increases with decreasing clutch size at an ever-decreasing rate, with the tangent slope of the function for the six-follicle ablation treatment being -0.04. According to the function describing instantaneous variation in tangent slope, the maximum value of tangent slope should converge towards zero. This result provides evidence that there is a fixed upper limit to egg size in E. carinata. 相似文献

Understanding whether egg failure occurs more frequently during laying or during incubation is important for determining the
most vulnerable period of the egg phase in bird species with long laying and incubation periods. However, most studies compare
nest failure during the egg stage and the hatchling stage. In this study we examined whether egg failure was higher during
the laying period and early development than during the final stages of development in a population of red-legged partridge
(Alectoris rufa) from northeast Spain. We collected 216 abandoned eggs in the field. Only 12% (n = 26) of the eggs were sufficiently intact to enable direct assessment of developmental stage, showing that 81% of 26 eggs
were lost during early stages. The majority of eggs were depredated (n = 154, 71%), as evidenced by an opening hole. To take advantage of information contained in these eggs, we propose a simple
method to assess their developmental stage by measuring the size of the opening of their hole. Based on this method, we estimated
that the proportion of eggs lost during early stages ranged from 72 to 83%. We validated this result of a high percentage
of egg failure during early developmental stages with a larger experimental sample. Nest losses in the partridge are higher
during the laying period or early development. This result is important in that the direction of conservation efforts and
their seasonal application should be adjusted to account for the most important factors affecting egg failure. 相似文献

We performed an experiment at a field site in north-central Nebraska to assess the role of the nest environment in inducing variation in bone mineral content in hatchling painted turtles Chrysemys picta (Schneider 1783). The contents of several newly constructed nests were manipulated by reciprocal transplant, after which the eggs were allowed to incubate for 8 wk under natural conditions. The nests were then excavated, and the eggs were brought into the laboratory to complete incubation and hatch under standard conditions of temperature and moisture. The hatchlings were killed, and their carcasses and residual yolks were analyzed separately for calcium and phosphorus. More of the random variation in carcass calcium and phosphorus was related to the nest in which eggs incubated (37% and 42%, respectively) than was associated with the clutch of origin (21% and 37%). Moreover, hatchlings from some nests contained substantially more calcium and phosphorus than did hatchlings from other nests, both in terms of the absolute amounts of the elements in their carcasses (pointing to variation in body size) and in terms of the concentrations of those elements (pointing to variation in bone density). The amounts of calcium and phosphorus in carcasses of hatchlings were positively correlated with changes in mass of their eggs during the 8 wk that the eggs incubated in nests in the field, thereby indicating that the influence of the nest environment on developing embryos probably was mediated by water exchanges experienced by the eggs. These findings indicate that developmental plasticity underlies a major fraction of the variation in mineral content of hatchling painted turtles emerging from nests in the field. Phenotypic variation attributable to plasticity consequently needs to be addressed in models for life-history evolution of painted turtles and other chelonians producing eggs with soft, flexible shells. 相似文献

The relationship among egg size, density and food level on larval development in the wood frog (Rana sylvatica) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Although inter- and intraspecific variation in egg size among amphibians has been well documented, the relationship between egg size and fitness remains unclear. Recent attempts to correlate egg size intraspecifically with larval developmental patterns have been equivocal. In this study the development of larvae derived from large eggs and small eggs, from a single population in Maryland were compared under a range of food levels and larval population densities. Both food level and density had significant effects on the length of the larval period and size at metamorphosis. However, the response among larvae derived from different egg sizes was not additive. At low densities and high food levels, larvae from small eggs had longer larval periods and a larger size at metamorphosis than larvae derived from large eggs. In contrast, at high densities larvae from small eggs had longer developmental periods but were smaller at metamorphosis than larvae from large eggs. In addition, larvae from small eggs were more sensitive to density irrespective of food level. These results suggest that optimal egg size is correlated with environmental factors, which may explain the maintenance of both geographic and within population variation in egg size commonly observed in amphibians. 相似文献

Although factors influencing androgen deposition in the avian egg and its effects on nestling fitness are recently receiving considerable attention, little is known about the potential costs of high testosterone levels in the females. Our study aimed at determining the effect of injections of testosterone (T) in female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), on clutch size, egg mass, yolk mass, and yolk androgen content. Females were given a single bolus injection of T in a range of doses after laying the first egg. Results show that administration of T negatively affected clutch size; the strength of this effect increased with increasing doses of T. Females injected with the highest testosterone dose showed suppressed oviposition of the third and the fourth eggs. Interestingly, testosterone administration made females produce eggs with relatively large yolks, suggesting that T may mediate the trade-off between number and size of eggs. Testosterone injection resulted in elevated levels of androgen in the eggs, in contrast to control clutches, which showed a decreasing pattern of androgen concentration along the laying sequence. We conclude that high androgen investment in eggs may be limited by physiological requirements of the ovulatory process. 相似文献
