The following compounds or treatments have been shown to inhibit the oxidation of ammonia, but not the oxidation of hydroxylamine in cells of Nitrosomonas: (i) metal-binding agents such as allylthiourea or potassium cyanide; (ii) compounds such as SKF 525 which interact with cytochrome P-450 of mammalian microsomes; (iii) carbon monoxide; (iv) inhibitors of catalase, peroxidase, and amine oxidases such as thiosemicarbazide, ethylxanthate, and iproniazid, respectively; (v) uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation such as m-chlorocarbonylcyanidephenylhydrazone; (vi) electron acceptors such as phenazine methosulfate; (vii) compounds such as methanol or N(2)O which react with free radicals; and (viii) illumination with 420 lux (5,000 foot candles) of light.  相似文献

Functional significances of the cytoskeleton and the plasmalemmal undercoat are discussed with special reference to their ultrastructural aspects. The cytoskeleton is mainly composed of three distinctive cytoplasmic fibrous structures, namely, microtubules, actin filaments and intermediate filaments. Closely associated with such fibrous structures are a variety of proteins, which have been shown not only to control the formation or breakdown of the fibrous structures but also to involve the construction of a higher order of fibrous architectures such as bundles and networks. Thus, these cytoskeletal fibrous components may form the respective systems, though such systems often interact with each other for the cytoplasmic integrity. The fundamental function of the cytoskeleton is to provide structural frameworks for the cytoplasm. Through such frameworks the cytoskeleton is involved in various cellular organizations and activities such as cell shape, distribution of cell organelles, cell motility, membrane phenomena, and metabolism. Much interest has also been drawn to the interaction between the plasmalemma and the cytoskeleton. Part of such interaction can be assigned to the plasmalemmal undercoat, though it indeed constitutes a part of the cytoskeleton. The significance of the plasmalemmal undercoat may be to primarily provide structural supports for the plasmalemma, playing various roles in cell physiology.  相似文献

The use of other physicochemical parameters to establish predictive relationships for redox properties of quinones is discussed. and attention drawn to situations where such relationships may be unreliable. The rates of reaction of semiquinone radicals with oxygen, including those of chemotherapeutic agents such as mitomycin and the anthracyclines. can be predicted with reasonable confidence from the redox properties. Cellulolytic fungi, such as Trichoderma reesei, T. lignorum, and Chaetomium cellulolyticum reach a low packing density of mycelia when grown on straw under conditions of solid substrate fermentation. The low packing density is shown to be caused partially by the geometric limitation of the growth of mycelia in the substrate and particularly in its pores, but the exact contribution of this limitation and other limitations such as mass transfer and substrate availability cannot be easily distinguished. The combined effect of such limitations is called steric hindrance. This steric hindrance is associated with and may be the principal cause of low biomass concentration in SSF.  相似文献

被广泛应用于临床医学、药理学和心理学等学科中的盲实验法,是一种为避免由于人为主观性而对实验观测结果产生偏差的实验设计方法.然而,该方法在动物行为研究领域一直不被重视.近年来有学者逐渐意识到这个问题,并通过文献综述和分析,发现大部分需要采用盲实验法的研究均忽略了此设计方法,使得其研究结果的效应量明显高于采用盲实验法的研究,说明实验中观测者的主观偏见对研究结果造成了影响.本文通过对盲实验法的介绍,强调了其在动物行为研究中的重要性,并对其在该研究领域中的应用进行了阐述和建议.  相似文献

The oxidation of essential serum proteins, albumin and gamma globulin, by the enzyme peroxidase can be partially inhibited by compounds, such as EDTA and 2,4-pentanedione, that complex with the iron ion in peroxidase. The evolutionary origins of periodic phenomena in biology, such as the circadian cycle, the hibernation cycle and the sleep-wake cycle, remain a mystery. We discuss the concept of temporal compartmentalization of metabolism that takes place during such cycles, and suggest that cyclic changes in a cell's metabolic state might be a fundamental driving force for such biological oscillations.  相似文献

任何转基因作物在进入商业化应用之前都必须经过严格的环境风险评价。评价转基因作物特别是抗虫作物对农田重要非靶标节肢动物的生态影响是其中一项重要内容。当前,全球种植的转基因抗虫作物大多表达对鳞翅目害虫具有活性的Cry1或Cry2类杀虫蛋白。由于非靶标鳞翅目昆虫如斑蝶、家蚕等与靶标害虫具有较近的亲缘关系,其幼虫可能同样对这类杀虫蛋白敏感。因此,这类转基因抗虫作物对非靶标鳞翅目害虫的潜在影响引起了研究者的广泛关注。在总结国内外相关研究数据的基础上,系统分析了转基因抗虫作物对非靶标蝶类和蚕类昆虫的潜在影响,获得以下结论:虽然蚕类和蝶类昆虫对Cry1或Cry2类杀虫蛋白敏感,但在自然条件下这类非靶标昆虫暴露于Cry杀虫蛋白的水平很低,抗鳞翅目害虫转基因作物的种植不可能显著影响田间蝶类昆虫的种群密度,也不会给我国的蚕丝产业带来负面影响。  相似文献

The assessment of hormones in saliva has gained wide acceptance in clinical endocrinology. To date, there is no hypothesis as to why some hormones can be found in saliva, while others cannot, and whether there is a physiological consequence of this fact. A number of carefully performed studies give examples of important physiological hormonal activity in saliva. Steroids, such as androgens, act as pheromones in olfactory communication of various mammalian species, such as facilitating mating behavior in swine or serving as odor cues for rodent nestlings. Salivary peptide hormones, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor‐α (TGF‐α), and amines such as melatonin, are involved in the regulation of inflammatory processes and in the promotion of cell proliferation, and contribute to a rapid wound healing in the oropharyngeal epithelia. Current data provide evidence of the involvement of salivary cytokines, such as interleukin‐8 and leptin, in tumorgenesis in the oral cavity and the salivary glands. The tumor tissues express and release significantly more of these cytokines than healthy glands. Consequently, the assessment of salivary hormone profiles may provide promising targets for diagnostic tumor markers.  相似文献

The adult brain is capable of considerable structural and functional plasticity and the study of hormone actions in brain has contributed to our understanding of this important phenomenon. In particular, stress and stress-related hormones such as glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids play a key role in the ability of acute and chronic stress to cause reversible remodeling of neuronal connections in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and amygdala. To produce this plasticity, these hormones act by both genomic and non-genomic mechanisms together with ongoing, experience-driven neural activity mediated by excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters, neurotrophic factors such as brain derived neurotrophic factor, extracellular molecules such as neural cell adhesion molecule, neuropeptides such as corticotrophin releasing factor, and endocannabinoids. The result is a dynamic brain architecture that can be modified by experience. Under this view, the role of pharmaceutical agents, such as antidepressants, is to facilitate such plasticity that must also be guided by experiences.  相似文献

Summary 1. The pioneering work of Hans Selye over 50 years ago demonstrated that certain steroid metabolites can produce a rapid depression of central nervous system activity.2. Research during the last 10 years has established that such effects are mediated by a nongenomic and specific interaction of these steroids with the brain's major inhibitory receptor, the GABAA receptor.3. Here we describe the molecular mechanism of action of such steroids and review attempts to define the steroid binding site on the receptor protein. The development of symbioses between soil fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM), and most terrestrial plants can be very beneficial to both partners and hence to the ecosystem. Among such beneficial effects, the alleviation of soil stresses by AM is of especial significance. It has been found that AM fungi can alleviate the unfavourable effects on plant growth of stresses such as heavy metals, soil compaction, salinity and drought. In this article, such mechanisms are reviewed, in the hope that this may result in more efficient use of AM under different stress conditions.  相似文献

Coastal sand mining for metals involves extraction of heavy mineral sands (HMS), which are sedimentary deposits of dense minerals that accumulate in coastal environments. HMS are localized concentrations of ores such as ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, and iron, which are sources of metals such as titanium, zircon, iron, sillimanite/kyanite, staurolite, monazite, and garnet. The applications of these metals range from everyday products such as ceramics, paint, and pigments, as well as technologically advanced applications in the airline, shipbuilding, medicine, and defense industries. HMS extraction implies strip mining of coastal areas, which are often unique biodiversity ecosystems, or fragile ecosystems built up on sandy soils or dunes. The loss of such spaces has impacts such as loss of biodiversity and habitats, salt-water intrusion into agricultural lands and increased exposure to sea level rise. As a result of the serious ecological and socioeconomic transformations at such extraction frontiers, these operations cause resistance movements across the world. This article identifies and documents 24 cases of resistance against such operations. It presents the first comprehensive database and analysis of HMS related ecological distribution conflicts.  相似文献

Escherichia coli lipase was found to have a broad pH optimum between pH 8 and 10. Long-chain acyl triacylglycerols such as trioleolglycerol were hydrolysed at a relatively slow rate, whereas, the shorter-chain acyl derivative tracapryloylglycerol was not. Triacylglycerols and diacylglycerols were broken down at a rate 10 to 15 fold greater than that for monoacylglycerol. Simple esters such as methyloleate and cetylpalmitate were hydrolysed at rates greater than that of triacyglycerol. Water-soluble esters such as p-nitrophenylacetate were not attacked. Hydrolysis of lipase substrate occurred more readily in the presence of an anionic detergent such as taurocholate. The enzyme had no marked preference for the 1- or 3-position of triacylglycerols but attacked these positions much more readily than position 2. The enzyme also catalyzed transacylation reaction with simple alcohols such as methanol or ethanol.  相似文献
