Performance of single letters and pairs of letters in short-term recognition experiments

Summary The theory of statistical decision is used to describe the recognition of single letters and pairs of letters from verbally presented lists. The results which are explained by means of the memory operating characteristic exhibit that the recognition of homogeneous pairs is predictably better than the recognition of single items.This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
