Development of the visual and mechanosensory systems of Atlantic croaker larvae was examined and compared to behavioural performance in order to determine sensory system functionality. Early larvae were characterized by a photopic visual system with a high density of cone photoreceptors, but no rods or photoreceptor summation on to higher order cells. Acuity of small larvae was comparable to other species. The mechanosensory system of early larvae consisted of a relatively high density of free neuromasts on the head and body. By approximately 10 mm total length ( L T), many sensory attributes of larvae had changed. Visual acuity had improved to levels slightly better than in other species. Rods began forming and summation ratios increased, indicating development of scotopic vision. Cephalic lateral-line canals began to enclose at 15 mm L T and were complete by 24 mm. The trunk lateral-line began to enclose at 30 mm and was complete by 40 mm. Behavioural performance was tested using an artificial predatory stimulus under different conditions to isolate the roles of vision and mechanoreception. Both sensory systems were necessary to elicit the highest levels of responsiveness. Responsiveness of larvae <6mm was equally influenced by visual and neuromast input, while responsiveness of larvae > 6 mm was largely influenced by visual input. Both vision and mechanoreception influenced ontogenetic changes in reactive distance of larvae. When there was no visual input, reactive distances increased slightly through ontogeny, indicating the use of mechanoreception. Only when mechanoreception was blocked, the ontogenetic increase in reactive distances was greater than that of larvae with all sensory systems intact. These results indicate that Atlantic croaker larvae use both sensory systems throughout the larval period, but the relative importance of these sensory systems changes with ontogeny.  相似文献

The most critical period at onset of feeding in pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca is short (<5 days at 20° C). The larvae are sensitive to prey density during the first week of exogenous feeding. First-feeding larvae of 6.5 mm total length ( LT ) needed prey densities of >585 prey l−1 to maintain mass (Cmaint), whereas 5 days older larvae of 7 mm L T Cmaint= 55 prey l−1 and for 11 mm L T larvae Cmaint<10 prey 1−1. Changes in specific growth rates for larvae of 7 and 11 mm were similar to a type-II functional response curve reaching a specific growth rate of 26 and 30% day−1, respectively, at 1000 prey l−1, whereas the 6·5 mm larvae showed a linear growth response reaching a specific growth rate of only 9% day −1 at 1000 prey l−1. The results suggest that prey density is a limiting factor, which might contribute to the high variation between year-class Strengths.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the larvae of silver hake Merluccius bilinearis was examined during two time periods (October 1998 and December 1992) on the Western Bank, Scotian Shelf, north‐west Atlantic, and compared with the feeding ecology of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua larvae collected in the same samples in December 1992. During both time periods silver hake exhibited strong selection for late stage copepodids and adult copepods at a small size (>3·5 mm total length, L T). The niche width measured as the diet breadth index ( I DB) of silver hake declined rapidly as they increased in size and remained relatively constant from 3 to 11 mm L T, during each time period. Atlantic cod larvae exhibited a broader niche width that was curvilinear over the same L T. Atlantic cod were also less selective than silver hake, incorporating both naupliar and early stage copepodids in their diets throughout the length classes examined. Simple isometric relationships did not explain the differences in diet, as Atlantic cod larvae continued to feed on early stages of copepods at large size, while silver hake larvae quickly switched to large prey items. The strong selection and narrow I DB observed for silver hake probably reflects adaptation to spawning during the periods between major secondary production peaks in temperate waters.  相似文献

Effect of temperature on swimming performance of sea bass juveniles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
At four temperatures ( T= 15, 20, 25 and 28° C) swimming performance of Dicentrarchus labrax was significantly correlated with total length (23–43 mm L T); r2=0.623–0.829). The relative critical swimming speed ( RU crit= U crit L T−1), where U crit is the critical swimming speed, was constant throughout the L T range studied. The significant effect of temperature on the relative critical swimming speed was described binomially: RU crit=−0.0323T2+ 1.578 T −10.588 (r2=1). The estimated maximum RU crit (8.69 L T s−1) was achieved at 24.4° C, and the 90% performance level was estimated between 19.3 and 29.6° C.  相似文献

Growth of pikeperch Sander lucioperca in the eutrophic and clay-turbid Lake Sahajärvi, Southern Finland, was extremely slow in comparison with other lakes at similar latitudes. The most important food item in July was phantom midge larvae Chaoborus flavicans for all sizes of S. lucioperca (239–423 mm total length L T), while later, in August and September, the diet of S. lucioperca (149–407 mm L T) consisted of small (30–100 mm L T) perch Perca fluviatilis , ruffe Gymnocephalus cernuus and roach Rutilus rutilus .  相似文献

Osteological development of the vertebral column and caudal complex in common dentex was described under extensive larval rearing conditions. Generally, the cartilaginous bones developed prior to the membranous bones. The development of the axial skeleton began with the formation of the hypural 1, the neural arches 2 and 3, as well as the haemal arches 1–8 at 4·8, 4·9 and 5·0 mm total length ( L T, measured in vivo ), respectively. By 7·5 mm L T, all the cartilaginous elements were formed, except for the ventral ribs, which formed between the range of 8·4–18·0 mm L T. The caudal lepidotrichia were the first membranous bones to appear (5·3 mm L T) and attain their full meristic count (7·4 mm L T), followed by the vertebral centra, which formed between 6·6 and 9·7 mm L T. By 25·0 mm L T, all the elements were fully ossified except for the ventral ribs. The developmental direction and order of all the elements were studied with respect to their formation and ossification. The results were discussed in the contexts of ichthyoplankton, ecology and aquaculture. Compared with other Sparidae species, common dentex followed a pattern of relatively rapid rate of osteological development.  相似文献

The ontogenetic development of the gut and accessory organs in large yellow croaker Pseudosciaena crocea was investigated using light microscopy from hatching up to the juvenile stage (40 days post hatch, dph). At 3 dph (mean ±  s . d ., 4·1 ± 0·1 mm total length, L T), coinciding with the buccopharynx opening, larvae started to feed exogenously, and the gut consisted of a well‐developed buccopharynx, a partially‐differentiated oesophagus and an intestine divided in three regions (anterior intestine, intermediate intestine and rectum). Yolk reserves were not completely depleted at the onset of exogenous feeding, and a period of mixed nutrition was observed up to 6 dph (4·3 ± 0·1 mm L T), when yolk was definitively exhausted. Important morphological changes occurred at the end of the larval period, coinciding with metamorphosis. At 17 dph (6·8 ± 0·6 mm L T), pyloric caeca differentiated at the junction of the pyloric stomach and the anterior intestine. Gastric glands were first observed at 21 dph (9·2 ± 1·2 mm L T), coinciding with the morphological development of the stomach in three different regions (cardiac, fundic and pyloric) according to the histological characteristics of their mucosa. At this age, large longitudinal folds appeared in the median and posterior oesophageal mucosa. These morphological and histological features suggested the achievement of a digestive system characteristic of large yellow croaker juveniles and adults.  相似文献

Growth of sympatric populations of three important sport fish species: bluegill Lepomis macrochirus , largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus , in 14 Illinois reservoirs was assessed in an attempt to relate size-specific growth to environmental conditions. Multiple regression relationships for most species and size classes explained a large percentage of the variation in growth. Growth of small bluegill (50 mm total length, L T) showed a strong negative relationship with bluegill catch per unit effort (cpue), per cent littoral area and pH. Large bluegill (150 mm L T) growth was negatively related to Daphnia spp. and benthic macroinvertebrate abundance and lake volume, and positively related to bluegill cpue. Growth of small (100 mm L T) and large (250 mm L T) largemouth bass was not well explained by any of the measured variables. Growth of both small (300 mm L T) and large (450 mm L T) channel catfish was strongly positively related to forage fishes and ichthyoplankton abundance, and per cent littoral area while negatively related to benthic macroinvertebrates. By identifying environmental conditions associated with increased growth rates, these models provide direction for managing fish populations and suggest testable hypotheses for future study of the complex interactions between environmental conditions and growth.  相似文献

Size-dependent interactions between piscivorous perch Perca fluviatilis (age ≥1 year) and their fish prey age 0 year perch, pikeperch Sander lucioperca and roach Rutilus rutilus in the biomanipulated Bautzen Reservoir indicated that the highest ratio of prey total length ( L T) to predator L T was 59%. Perch L T and prey fish L T were positively and linearly related. Perch L T was strongly related with both gape width and gape height. Within the range 80–110 mm L T, the gape height of perch exceeded gape width, while beginning at 120 mm L T the gape width exceeded gape height. The minimum, maximum and mean prey L T and prey body depths of all three prey species increased with increasing predator size, but the increases in mean sizes of perch and pikeperch as prey were less than that of roach. The low limit of the 'predation window' observed in this study coupled with results of previous studies on perch in the Bautzen Reservoir indicated that perch had a major impact on the population dynamics of both perch and pikeperch.  相似文献

Psammobatis extenta collected from the commercial bottom trawl fishery operating in Puerto Quequén, Argentina, between 2000 and 2001, had a sex ratio of 1:1 (535 specimens). Both the largest male and female measured 313 mm total length ( L T). The relationship between total body mass and L T was significantly different between sexes; mature females weighed more than mature males for a given L T. The size at which 50% of males were sexually mature was 262 mm L T (83·6% of the maximum size), whereas 50% of females were mature at 249 mm L T (80·0% of the maximum size). The gonadosomatic index in mature males and females was slightly higher during summer, but did not show significant variation over the sampling period. The hepatosomatic index of males and females was higher during the autumn and winter and followed a distinct seasonal pattern. Evidence suggested a continuous reproductive cycle during the year, with a maximum number of females carrying egg-cases in summer.  相似文献

Diet and prey size spectrum of pikeperch in lakes in central Finland   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The stomach content of pikeperch Sander lucioperca was studied in 24 lakes in central Finland. The most important prey species was smelt Osmerus eperlanus then perch Perca fluviatilis . The proportion of cyprinids as prey increased with pikeperch total length ( L T) and lake phosphorus content. Prey L T and pikeperch L T correlated positively, but the prey‐to‐predator size ratio correlated negatively with pikeperch L T.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the smooth-hound shark Mustelus mustelus was studied in the Gulf of Gabès (southern Tunisia). Females were found to mature between 1075 and 1230 mm total length ( L T) whereas males matured between 880 and 1120 mm L T. The L T at which 50% of the population reached maturity was 971 and 1172 mm for males and females, respectively. Male gonads were symmetrical in terms of mass and both functional, whereas in females only the right ovary was functional. The seasonal changes in the oocytes and testes development, embryo length and the occurrence of near-term and post-partum females showed that this species displayed a clearly defined annual reproductive cycle with parturition occurring during late April and early May, after a gestation period of 10–11 months. Mating took place during May and early June and fertilization occurred from early June to early July. The embryo sex ratio was not significantly different from unity. Litter size varied from four to 18 embryos and was positively correlated with maternal L T. The young were born with a L T of 340–420 mm.  相似文献

The trophic linkage between yellow perch Perca flavescens and two exotic prey items, alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and round goby Neogobius melanostomus , was investigated in the extreme southern area of Lake Michigan during the summer of 2002. Yellow perch ≥100 mm total length, L T( n  = 1293) exhibited size selective feeding, with 148 fish containing round gobies and 120 fish containing alewives. The mean round goby L T, preyed on by yellow perch, was 23% of the predator L T, with a range of 7 to 47%, and mean alewife L T was 32% of yellow perch L T, with a range of 18 to 46%. Although the selection of prey size by yellow perch increased proportionally with yellow perch L T, prey consumed appeared smaller than theoretically possible based on gape size.  相似文献

The abundance and growth history of larval and juvenile Japanese seaperch Lateolabrax japonicus were investigated in the Chikugo River estuary, upper Ariake Bay, from 1990 to 2000. Growth during the larval period (up to 15 mm standard length, L S, the size at recruitment into the estuary) was backcalculated using sagittal otolith microstructures by the biological intercept method. Growth rates in length declined at body sizes >14 mm L S. High freshwater discharge through the Chikugo River was associated with high temperatures of the upper Ariake Bay where the larvae spend their planktonic life. Mean larval stage duration (days) from hatch to 15 mm ( D 15) varied between 48·8 and 76·2 days and was inversely correlated with the estimated mean temperature history [mean daily temperature (° C) experienced by the larvae during the period from hatch to 15 mm, T 15]. Mean abundance (number m−2) of larvae and juveniles was highest in years when T 15, D 15 and freshwater discharge were at intermediate levels. Although the abundance was not correlated with either of these variables, an exponential relationship between abundance and D 15 was found when data collected during the highest river discharge years (1990, 1991 and 1998) were excluded. The increase in freshwater discharge through the Chikugo River probably had the potential to enhance or diminish Japanese seaperch recruitment in two ways: 1) it could increase recruitment probability by increasing temperature and larval growth and 2) high river flow also had the potential to decrease the probability of immigration into the river by increasing larval seaward dispersion, predation due to decreased turbidity and starvation due to decreased zooplankton prey abundance in the estuary.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the Mediterranean razor fish Xyrichthys novacula was investigated by demographic data and histological analysis of the female, intersexual and male gonads. Specimens were collected by bottom trawl on a monthly basis between June 2000 and July 2001 in a sandy bay in southern Thyrrenian. Gonad histology confirmed that the Mediterranean razor fish is a monandric, protogynous hermaphrodite. Females reached first sexual maturity at 100 mm ( L T) and the estimated mean L T at first maturity ( L 50) was 125 mm. Females exhibited asynchronous ovarian development and multiple ovulations occurred over the spawning period. Vitellogenesis started in early May and spawning occurred from late May until late September. Sexual transition involved a large‐scale atresia of all oocyte stages and a massive degeneration of ovarian tissue followed by primordial germ cells proliferation. Sex change began at spawning time (June) but transitional individuals tended to cluster at the end of the reproductive period (September). They accounted for 17·1% of the population sampled and were found in a broad size range (105–150 mm L T).  相似文献

Throughout 1 year, from October 2003 to September 2004, 88 visits to the landing site of a small urban fishery (APREBAN) in Rio de Janeiro city were conducted and 816 specimens of Rhizoprionodon lalandii were analysed. The sample, mostly females, was composed of two cohorts: young-of-the-year were abundant in spring and summer and adults predominated in autumn and winter. Gravid females were most abundant from April to June, whereas post-partum females composed most of the catch in August to September. Adult males were present all year although were more abundant between February and July. No neonates were captured during the study and most embryos collected measured slightly below the reported total length ( L T) at time of birth ( L 0) for the species, suggesting that parturition may occur slightly outside the main fishing grounds or that neonates were not captured in commercial gillnets set at this time of the year. The mean L T at maturity ( L T50) for males was 578 mm and females matured between 620 and 660 mm, although a precise estimate of L T50 for females could not be determined. The total length ( L T) and total mass ( M T) relationship     was calculated for both sexes and showed no significant differences. The mean condition factor increased steadily from February to July followed by a steep decrease in values relative to females in August and September, suggesting a pupping season. The present study area can be classified as a coastal juvenile habitat and a probable mating ground for R. lalandii .  相似文献

Scartichthys viridis maintains a herbivorous diet following recruitment to rocky intertidal areas, where it consumes almost exclusively macroalgae. The sheet–like green macroalgae Ulva and Enteromorpha were the main items consumed by individuals <130 mm L T. The tough branching red macroalga Gelidium made the bulk of the gut contents of specimens >220 mm L T, Ulva being consumed to a much lesser extent. Further, Gelidium increased in importance in the total gut contents during ontogeny. In contrast, both small (70–120 mm L T) and medium–sized (140–210 mm L T) S. viridis individuals preferred Ulva in the laboratory. It is suggested that the increasing consumption of Gelidium along the ontogeny of S. viridis results from the limited availability of Ulva in the field. Large S. viridis individuals possessed longer guts relative to their body length, in comparison with small individuals.  相似文献

Distribution, growth and mortality of larval and juvenile rough scad Trachurus lathami Nichols, 1920, were studied, based on samples collected during December 1991 in the south-eastern Brazilian Bight. Young rough scad were widespread throughout the region surveyed, but spawning was more intensive in the northern area and tended to be greater in areas of low temperature and high salinity. The length class distribution of the rough scad larvae and juveniles ranged from 2.25 to 32.25 mm body length (BL), and the preflexion larvae of size categories from 2.25 to 3.25 mm BL were the most abundant. Net avoidance was detected for early larvae (2.25 mm length class) and for juveniles larger than 12.25 mm BL length class. Two models were applied to estimate growth and daily growth rate: a linear regression and a Gompertz curve. Both curves showed similar results and a good fit to the data. The mean growth rate estimated by linear regression was 0.44 mm per day (SD=0.008 mm). In small larvae up to 25 mm BL the linear and Gompertz curves showed similar estimated lengths. The hypothetical length at age zero ( L 0) was estimated as 1.5 mm. The instantaneous daily mortality coefficient estimated from the slope of the regression of log-transformed values of relative production rates ( P t/ d t) against age ( ti ) was Z=0.1888 for larval and juvenile rough scad. This corresponds to a daily mortality rate of 17.2%.  相似文献

The swimming performance of Platycephalus bassensis at steady speed was assessed with an emphasis on hydrodynamics. The minimum swimming speed to maintain hydrostatic equilibrium for P. bassensis of 0·271 m total length ( L T) was calculated to be 1·06 L T s−1. At this speed, the required lift to support the mass of the fish was equivalent to 6·6% of the fish mass; 82·7% of which was created by the body as a hydrofoil, and the rest of which was created by the pelvic fins as hydrofoils. The minimum swimming speed decreased with the L T of the fish and ranged from 1·15 L T s−1 for a fish of 0·209 m to 0·89 L T s−1 for a fish of 0·407 m. The forward movement per tail-beat cycle ( i.e. stride length) was described with an equation including quantities of morphological and hydro-mechanical relevance. This equation explained that stride length was increased by the effect of turbulence characterized by the Reynolds number and demonstrated the morphological and hydro-mechanical functional design of the fish for maximizing thrust and minimizing drag. The larger span of the caudal fin and caudal tail-beat amplitude was associated with larger stride length, whereas greater frictional drag was associated with smaller stride length.  相似文献
