The multiple use of distinct ecological environments in the search for wild resources has been practiced since ancestral times in aboriginal communities inhabiting northwestern Patagonia. This paper examines the actual use and knowledge of wild edible plants in a Mapuche community presently settled in one of the most arid areas of Patagonia, far from the temperate forests where their ancestors used to live. The difference between knowledge of and use of wild plants is analyzed emphasizing that these differences could contribute to the understanding of eroding processes believed to be occurring in the community. These objectives are studied quantitatively by utilizing ethnobotanical indices, partially derived from ecological theory. Our results indicate that the Paineo dwellers still utilize multiple ecological gathering environments and have thorough plant knowledge of both native and exotic species. The Andean forest, more than 50km away from this community, is the environment from which the Paineo dwellers know the greatest total richness and the highest diversity of wild edible plants, followed by the Monte–Steppe species and lastly, those growing around their homes. The transmission of wild edible plant knowledge in the Paineo community diminishes with age, and the forest plants are the most vulnerable to loss. Our results have shown that the knowledge and consumption of wild edible plants follows a pattern according to ecological conditions of the gathering environments, as well as the cultural heritage of the Paineo people.  相似文献

Edible Wild Plant Use in a Mapuche Community of Northwestern Patagonia   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mapuche Indians have a long tradition of using edible wild resources. The people of Rams (Neuquén, Argentina) consider themselves descendants of the Pehuenches, an Indian group that once inhabited the Pehuén forest region. They now live in the steppe, far away from the forest. Our primary interests are how this community uses edible resources and in analyzing which plants are still utilized. We conducted an ethnobotanical study, which consisted in interviewing several Mapuche families and collecting plants with their help. Ecological variables of plant use, such as search cost, handling time, and nutritional content, were analyzed from the perspective of Optimal Foraging Theory. Our results indicate that the Rams inhabitants have a thorough understanding of their environment, expressed in a selective gathering of wild resources. Cost and benefit trade-offs seem to be considered when edible plants are collected.  相似文献

The ancestral tradition of gathering nontimber products in the Andean forests of Patagonia seems to be on the verge of disappearing. Edible wild plant knowledge and differential patterns of use have been compared in two populations of different economic and cultural backgrounds—a small rural Mapuche community (Rams), and an outlying population (El Frutillar). The first is located in an herbaceous steppe far from the nearest Andean forest while the second is located outside the town of Bariloche, near the forests of Nahuel Huapi National Park. Semistructured interviews and related ecological variables were compared in both communities. In the past, both communities utilized nontimber forest products from the Andean Temperate forests. However, today, cost and benefit trade-offs appear to affect when and what edible resources are collected. The people from El Frutillar gather fewer wild plants in spite of the high plant abundance and the notorious food scarcity they suffer. The Mapuche people use more nutritious resources, more native species, spend longer traveling to the gathering site, and longer handling time preparing edible plants.  相似文献

Mexican cloud forest vegetation has been recorded in temperate humidconditions at rather different elevations ranging from 600 to 3000m. They are characterised by high biodiversity under continuousfoggy situations. Some authors state that many genera are quantitativelyimportant to depict cloud forest conditions. Detailed quantitative studiescomprising most of the localities of Mexican cloud forests to depict altidudinaldistribution ranges on basis of preferential genera have not been previouslyconducted. The aim of this study is (1) to recognise characteristic preferentialgenera of Mexican cloud forest conditions, and (2) to determine quantitativelythe current altitudinal distribution pattern of this vegetation type. From adatabase composed by 995 genera inhabiting in the Mexican cloud forests, sixgenera were chosen preliminary as preferential characteristics. These wereClethra, Magnolia, Meliosma, Styrax, Symplocos, andTernstroemia. These genera include 70 species that occur atover 70% of the current Mexican cloud forest fragments. The mean elevation ofthese genera records were 1853 m (±600 at 95% confidenceinterval). The results showed that Mexican cloud forests occur optimally between1250 and 2450 m. Additionally, Mexican cloud forest is the bestdistributed within some provinces of the Región Mesoamericana deMontaña, chiefly at Serranías Meridionales,Sierra Madre Oriental, and SerraníasTransístmicas. The results are discussed in light of theimportance of these regions as diversification centres.  相似文献

Little is known about the influence of forest management on the interaction between seed bank and aboveground vegetation. We surveyed seed banks and vegetation in 10 forest stands under similar abiotic conditions but submitted either to a coppice-with-standards treatment (n=5) or to a selective-cutting system (n=5). We analyzed species composition and diversity, community ecological profile, and distribution of taxa among different life forms, strategy, morphology and functional type categories. A total of 2085 seedlings (8296 seedsm–2) germinated-corresponding to 28 species, among which Juncus effusus was the most abundant. Fifty-seven percent of the species were also recorded in the aboveground vegetation, the dominant species being Rubus fruticosus agg., but only 28% of the aboveground species were present in the seed bank. Our results suggest that (1) vernal geophytes and shade-tolerant perennials, which group most true forest species, are not incorporated in the seed bank, (2) parent plants of most seeds were present either in the stand in an earlier dynamic stage or apart from the stand and long-distance dispersed, (3) as expected, early-successional species are well represented in the seed bank, (4) forestry vehicles seem to be a major means of dispersion for stress-tolerant species normally found in forest lanes and wheel tracks. We conclude that seed banks contain species that have a potentially negative impact on the true forest flora and, thus, forest management should minimize soil disturbance and retain remnants of old-coppice woods to conserve disturbance-sensitive true forest species.  相似文献

We have compared edible plant richness, diversity and differential patterns of use in two Mapuche communities of Argentina. The populations of Rams and Cayulef are located in a herbaceous steppe, far from the temperate forests of northwestern Patagonia where their ancestors lived in the past. Ecological concepts and methods, such as diversity indices, niche breadth and optimal foraging theory have been used in this comparative study. Our results indicate that the diversity of wild plants used in Rams and Cayulef is associated with the variety of gathering environments they visit. When comparing diversity indices among the three environments within each community, in Cayulef we found the highest diversity indices for steppe species and the lowest for forest plants. In contrast, in Rams the niche breadth is similar in all environments, indicating an ample exploration and use of edible wild plants. Cost and benefit trade-offs seem to be considered in both communities when edible plants are collected. Nevertheless, we found that the people from Rams not only utilize a greater richness of wild plants than the Cayulef people, but also use more nutritious resources, spend more time traveling to the gathering sites and a longer handling time in preparing these edible plants. This study has quantitatively shown that the restricted access to Pehuen forest (Araucaria araucana) is the main factor which seems to limit wild plant diversity used in these Mapuche communities.  相似文献

The influence of different Al concentrations, (0, 60 and 120 M Al) on growth and internal concentrations of Al, Si and selected organic acids was analysed in plants of teosinte (Zea mays L. ssp. mexicana), a wild form of maize from acid soils from Mexico. The plants were grown in nutrient solutions (pH 4.0) with or without 4 M silicon. Analysis with the GEOCHEM speciation program did not reveal differences between free activities of Al3+ in solutions with and without 4 M Si, but solutions with Si yielded lower concentrations of monomeric Al species, [Al]mono, when analysed by a modified aluminon method. Plants grown on solutions with similar [Al]mono, but differing in silicon, showed highly significant differences in growth and tissue concentrations of Al and organic acids. Silicon prevented growth inhibition at [Al]mono concentrations as high as 35 M, while plants grown without Si suffered severe growth reductions with 33 M [Al]mono. In solutions with similar [Al]mono concentrations plants with Si had lower tissue Al concentrations and higher concentrations of malic acid than plants without Si. In view of both the significant influence of Si on the response of plants to Al toxicity and the fact that some soluble Si is always present in soil solutions, the addition of low Si concentrations to nutrient solutions used for Al-tolerance screening is recommended.  相似文献

Cytogenetical studies of the F1 hybrid between the commercially cultivated tuber crop, cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) and the closely related wild speciesManihot glaziovii Muell. (Ceara rubber) used as donor specles for Cassava mosaic discase and drought-resistant genes and back crosses (to cassava parent) were made. The contrasting parental characters showed partial to total dominance in the F1 hybrid, while the back cross plants were similar to cassava in most of their characters. Eleven of the twelve backeross plants exhibited resistance to Cassava mosaic under field conditions. Karyological similarities and differences as resolved on the basis of a comparative study of the karyotypes of the cassava parent and coara rubber were corroborated by the study of chromosomal pairing in the F1 at pachytene. Major chromosomal differentiation in the two species involved three chromosomes of their haploid complement which were represented by three heteromorphic bivalent associations in F1 each consisting of a probably basic chromosomal type and a derived type. Pachytene analyses of three back cross plants provided direct proof for random transmission of marker chromosomes of both the parents through male gametes of the F1 hybrid. An increase in the chiasma frequency in the back cross plants over the F1 hybrid at metaphase I stage was also observed. Pollen fertility of the backeross plants showed considerable variation.  相似文献

The Mapuche communities of Argentina and Chile have a vast knowledge of useful plants from temperate forests of Patagonia. However, present processes of transculturation and uprooting seem to have caused a decline in wild plant gathering. This is a case study of a Mapuche community that now lives far away from the forests that their ancestors inhabited. Nineteen families from the Rams Mapuche community (83% of the total population) were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire, with the aim of finding out which edible wild species are known and still used, and what factors, according to the people perception, have caused the decline. People mentioned a total of 49 edible wild plants including four types of resources: Araucaria araucana seeds, the fruits and roots of bushes and herbs, and leaves of edible weeds. Factors such as the difficulty access to forests which no longer belong to them, drought and soil deterioration from overgrazing were indicated by people acting negatively on the preservation of the knowledge of plants in the younger generations.  相似文献

Juniperus virginiana plants grow faster than other associated tree species in abandoned fields. During the summer the needles of the species do not light saturate even at 1,750 E m-2 s-1, reach optimum photosynthesis at 20°C, and maintain maximum photosynthesis at-8 to-12 bar twig water potential. In the field, the plants experience pronounced daily changes in water potential. The magnitude of the changes becomes more pronounced later in the summer. Leaves of the mature plants have highest rate of photosynthesis, young trees intermediate, and seedlings lowest. In winter there is a slight shift in optimum temperature for photosynthesis and the plants photosynthesize at 0°C. The rates of photosynthesis are lower in winter than in summer. On sunny days with calm winds, mature individuals and seedlings maintain significantly higher temperatures than air temperature while intermediate plants do not. The latter exhibit a lower photosynthetic rate than both mature plants and seedlings. The trends of photosynthesis, in the 3 size classes, both in winter and summer, correspond to the chlorophyll content of their leaves. It is concluded that J. virginiana grows well in open field habitats because it is a sun-adapted, drought resistant species with a long growing season which includes winter. The species is excluded from mature forests because it is shade-intolerant.  相似文献

The production of 5-IMP and 5-GMP by enzymatic conversion from RNA using a continuous two packed-bed reactor was investigated. 5-Phosphodiesterase (5PD) and 5-adenylate deaminase (5AD) were immobilized in an acrylic resin to produce derivatives with about 15 U/g of support. The kinetic properties of the enzymes were described by Michaelis-Menten models: no significant differences were found in the K m value of the free and immobilized 5AD (60 and 20 m, respectively), whereas for 5PD the K m value was one order of magnitude higher for the immobilized enzyme (4.85 mg RNA/ml), probably due to diffusional limitations. Both enzymes remained stable after 8 h of use in a continuous packed-bed reactor whereas the half lives of the free enzymes were 193 min and 240 min at 40°C and 70°C for 5AD and 5PD, respectively. A procedure is proposed for the design of a continuous two packed-bed column process.F. Olmedo and F. Sika deer Cervus nippon entered the Oze Area, a snowy area in central Japan, in the 1990s. The use of mires and the food habits of this species were studied in 1999 and 2000. Deer used the mires immediately after snow melted and did not use the mires in mid summer, although they did use them lightly in autumn. The summer food habits differed from those of the deer population living in Nikko in the lower area: non-Sasa graminoids and other monocotyledonous leaves occupied more (approximately 30%) of the feces in the former population, whereas Sasa nipponica, a dwarf bamboo, was the dominant food (60%) of the latter population. Seasonal changes in fecal composition in the Oze deer were that mire graminoids occupied a considerable portion of their food in spring (11.6%) and summer (17.0%), whereas the amount of dwarf bamboo increased in fall (26.0%). Despite the small size of the mires, Oze deer appear to prefer mires to forests. Nitrogen concentrations of the mire plants did not differ from those of the forest plants; however, foraging efficiency would be greater in the mires and this may explain the preference observed. Despite the small total biomass, leaf biomass of the mire was equivalent to that of the adjacent forest floor. In addition, biomass was concentrated near the ground, or the biomass concentration was greater than that of the forest floor.  相似文献

Summary The genetics of submergence tolerance in rice was studied in a 10 × 10 half-diallel cross set involving 10 lowland rice varieties, four of which were tolerant (FR13A, FR43B, Kurkaruppan, and Goda Heenati) and the remaining six were nontolerant (RD19, IR42, IR17494-32-1, IR19672-24-3, Jagannath, and CR1009). Estimates of genetic parameters following Hayman's method showed significant additive and nonadditive gene action and the latter appeared to be solely due to dominance. Narrow sense heritability (0.70) indicated that additive gene effects were more important in the inheritance of the trait. Tolerance was dominant over nontolerance and the average dominance was within the range of incomplete dominance. Dominant alleles were more concentrated in the three tolerant parents, FR13A, Kurkaruppan, and FR43B in that order. Wr/Vr graphic analysis suggested the involvement of both major and minor genes. Combining ability analysis by Griffing's method also indicated significance of both additive and nonadditive effects, and the former appeared to be more important than the latter. The hybrids involving FR13A with RD19, IR42, and IR17494-32-1, and those of Kurkaruppan with RD19 and CR1009 appeared to be promising for incorporating an adequate level of tolerance to submergence into lowland rice cultivars.  相似文献

Summary A comparative study of the antitumor effect of murine recombinant interferon() Mu-rIFN() and murine recombinant interferon() Mu-rIFN() on B16-F10 melanoma was conducted. Administration of Mu-rIFN() i.p. into C57BL/6 mice on days 1 to 7 produced a higher suppressive effect than Mu-rIFN() both on the growth of s.c. implanted tumor and on the formation of artificial pulmonary metastasis. Pharmacokinetic study of Mu-rIFN() demonstrated that high plasma levels were retained for a long time. In clonogenic assay, Mu-rIFN() at 1000 units/ml showed about 80% inhibition of colonies of B16-F10 melanoma. However, Mu-rIFN() hardly inhibited the colonies, even at 1000 units/ml. Augmentation of natural killer (NK) cytotoxicity was much greater with Mu-rIFN() than Mu-rIFN(), whereas Mu-rIFN() enhanced the cytotoxicity of peritoneal macrophages more strongly than Mu-rIFN(). Injection of Mu-rIFN() i.p. 1 day before tumor challenge also inhibited the formation of pulmonary metastasis of B16-F10 melanoma. However, pretreatment of mice with carrageenan significantly suppressed the inhibitory effect of Mu-rIFN(). From these results, it is suggested that the inhibitory effect of Mu-rIFN() on the tumor growth and metastases of B16-F10 melanoma is mediated partly by direct antitumor effect and partly by the activation of macrophages, and that the augmentation of NK activity contributes mainly to the antitumor effect of Mu-rIFN().  相似文献

In age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells are believed to be detrimentally affected. It is thought that zinc may play a part in this process. In the past, therefore, zinc supplementation has been suggested as a treatment for AMD. Experimental data shown here confound this view by indicating that whereas low amounts of zinc do protect RPE cells in culture from stress-induced effects, greater amounts of zinc have the opposite influence. These effects are partly dependent upon the health status of the cells. Experimental data presented herein also show that zinc-induced death of RPE cells can, however, be attenuated by compounds such as antioxidants (-tocopherol, trolox, and metipranolol), or cellular energy substrates (pyruvate and oxaloacetate). It is therefore concluded that a combination of zinc and antioxidants or energy substrates rather that zinc alone should provide a safer and more effective way to treat a disease such as AMD.  相似文献

A combined palynological and phytosociological methodological approach was used in the reconstruction of precultural forest vegetation in a small model area of Bílý Kí-Janík in the Moravskoslezské Beskydy mountains (northwest Slovakia). Two pollen diagrams show the predominance of Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba and Picea abies in past natural mixed forests. The present-day occurrence and distribution of forest herbs allow the differentiation of five past vegetation types with above mentioned forest climax trees covering the area before the beginning of human interference. A map of reconstructed natural vegetation is presented which can be used for revitalization of present secondary spruce plantations, heavily affected by air pollution.  相似文献

Summary Puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN)-induced nephrosis in rats provides a model for studying the pathogenesis of severe proteinuric conditions, such as minimal change disease. The present study used scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy to investigate the in vitro effects of PAN on rat glomerular podocytes. Slices of rat kidney were incubated for up to 3 days in Medium 199 with Hanks' salts (control) or in medium with PAN. Semiquantitative SEM analysis of glomeruli on the upper surface of kidney slices indicated that incubation with PAN (100 g/ml and 500 g/ml) decreased the number of microvilli on podocyte cell bodies (days 1, 2 and 3), increased the number of glomeruli showing flattening of podocyte cell bodies and major processes (days 2 and 3), and increased the number of glomeruli showing surface membrane blebbing on podocyte foot processes (day 3) (p<0.001 in all cases). TEM morphometry revealed that incubation with 500 g/ml PAN retarded significantly (p<0.001 at days 2 and 3) the loss of podocyte foot processes observed in control cultures. Whilst the SEM changes to podocyte ultrastructure largely mimic those seen in PAN nephrosis in vivo, the retardation of foot process loss runs counter to the major TEM change observed in vivo.  相似文献

Excavation of the Epipalaeolithic levels of the cave site Öküzini in southwest Anatolia produced many nutshell remains, mainly endocarp fragments belonging either to Prunus or Amygdalus. Morphological comparison with the range of potential species and present geographical distribution made it possible to refine the determination to either of two species of wild almond, Amygdalus orientalis or A. graeca . These plants could grow in the surroundings of the site on rocky slopes or sandy hills and had to be collected during late summer. All wild Amygdalus seeds are toxic, so that their use as food is disputed. This paper explores the detoxification possibilities, nutritional properties and ethnographic analogies for the use of wild almonds. It comes to the conclusion that the seeds probably played a notable role in the diet of the Epipalaeolithic population of southwest Anatolia, complementing meat and other plant food. An examination of further prehistoric nutshell finds from Anatolia supports a long and widely distributed tradition of almond use.  相似文献

Triploid hybrids have been obtained by crossing individuals of the diploid Warramaba virgo with males of two undescribed related species of Warramaba, P169 (neo-XY) and P196 (X1X2Y). In both cases, offspring which receive a Y-chromosome from the father are males, while those that receive a neo-X from P169 or an X1 and an X2 from P196 are females. The triploids can be distinguished from diploids, even in the earliest nymphal instars, by the larger size of their eye facets. Their gonads are undeveloped and abnormal so that they are mostly sterile (the males absolutely so). Nevertheless, in the case of female hybrids (both the ones between virgo and P169 and those between virgo and P196) a few oocytes do develop and it was possible to obtain a further generation of hybrids by parthenogenesis. These, which are all female, and have karyotypes identical to those of their mothers, are derived from eggs which have undergone the virgo type of meiosis, with a premeiotic doubling of the chromosome number, followed by synapsis restricted to sister chromosomes. — Some diploid hybrids have also been obtained between the bisexual species P169 () and P196 (). In this case the male offspring died in the embryonic stage or immediately after hatching. Female hybrids, on the other hand, were viable but had under-developed ovaries, so that they only laid very few eggs. Some of the latter developed into embryos with a karyotype identical to that of the mother, but the meiosis of these eggs has not yet been studied, so that it is not known whether it is of the virgo type. These hybridization experiments support the hypothesis that virgo originated as a hybrid between P196 and P169. — A single male hybrid between Warramaba picta () and P169 () was obtained; it had active spermatogenesis, but many meiotic abnormalities.  相似文献

Summary Various spent agro-residues obtained after cultivation of the edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju were used in anaerobic digestors for production of biogas. The changes that take place in the residues during bioconversion were quantified in terms of composition of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, carbon and nitrogen. These mycostraws resulted in increased biogas production over the untreated ones, which varied from 21.5% in the case of spent bagasse to 38.8% in the case of spent paddy straw. The increased biogas generation by the spent residues seems to be due to the increased susceptibility to digestion and more favourable C/N ratio of the residues. Offprint requests to: V. S.
