Summary Humidity, at the young nodes of white clover stolones, varied by enclosing nodes in the atmosphere above a range of saturated solutions, inhibited root initiation at 85% RH or less. The threshold humidity for root initiation increased to about 93% on young nodes subject to moisture stress or old nodes on well watered plants in which root initiation had been previously suppressed by low humidity.Roots at old nodes and at the three youngest on stolons were either subject to moisture stress or adequately watered. Growth of young roots and N2-fixation were more adversely affected by the direct effects of drought than by subjecting old roots to drought. Although old roots under stress affected new root growth and N2-fixation, length of roots and lateral root number were little affected. By contrast stolon growth was affected more by stress to old roots than to young nodes, although after 6 weeks the contribution made by young roots to stolon growth was almost as high as old roots.The data suggest that deep roots at old nodes will allow clover stolons to grow during drought due to the high acropetal movement of water but initiation of roots and functioning of young roots at the soil surface will be adversely affected, with possible implications on the persistence of clover. 相似文献

Lateral roots are crucial for the plasticity of root responses to environmental conditions in soil. The bacterivorous microfauna has been shown to increase root branching and to foster auxin producing soil bacteria. However, information on modifications of plant internal auxin content by soil bacteria and bacterivores is missing. Therefore, the effects of a rhizosphere bacterial community and a common soil amoeba (Acanthamoeba castellanii) on root branching and on auxin (indole-3-acetic acid) metabolism in Lepidium sativum and Arabidopsis thaliana were investigated. In a first experimental series, bacteria increased conjugated auxin concentrations in L. sativum shoots, but did not alter free bioactive auxin content nor root branching. In contrast, in presence of soil bacteria plus amoebae free auxin concentrations in shoots and root branching increased, demonstrating that effects of bacteria on auxin metabolism in plants were strongly modified by the bacterivorous amoebae. In a second experiment, A. thaliana reporter plants for auxin (DR5) and cytokinin (ARR5) responded similarly with increased root branching in the presence of amoebae. Surprisingly, in reporter plants cytokinin but not auxin responses were detectable, accompanied by higher soil nitrate concentrations in the presence of amoebae. Likely, increased nitrate concentrations in the rhizosphere led to an accumulation of cytokinin and interactions with free auxin in plants and finally to increased root growth in the presence of amoebae. Altogether, the results show that mutual control mechanisms exist between plant hormone metabolism and microbial signalling, and that effects on hormonal concentrations of plants by free-living bacteria are strongly influenced by bacterial grazers like amoebae. 相似文献

Current models of gravity perception in higher plants focus on the buoyant weight of starch-filled amyloplasts as the initial gravity signal susceptor (statolith). However, no tests have yet determined if statolith mass is regulated to increase or decrease gravity stimulus to the plant. To this end, the root caps of white clover (Trifolium repens) grown in three gravity environments with three different levels of gravity stimulation have been examined: (i) 1-g control with normal static gravistimulation, (ii) on a slow clinostat with constant gravistimulation, and (iii) in the stimulus-free microgravity aboard the Space Shuttle. Seedlings were germinated and grown in the BioServe Fluid Processing Apparatus and root cap structure was examined at both light and electron microscopic levels, including three-dimensional cell reconstruction from serial sections. Quantitative analysis of the electron micrographs demonstrated that the starch content of amyloplasts varied with seedling age but not gravity condition. It was also discovered that, unlike in starch storage amyloplasts, all of the starch granules of statolith amyloplasts were encompassed by a fine filamentous, ribosome-excluding matrix. From light micrographic 3-D cell reconstructions, the absolute volume, number, and positional relationships between amyloplasts showed (i) that individual amyloplast volume increased in microgravity but remained constant in seedlings grown for up to three days on the clinostat, (ii) the number of amyloplasts per cell remained unchanged in microgravity but decreased on the clinostat, and (iii) the three-dimensional positions of amyloplasts were not random. Instead amyloplasts in microgravity were grouped near the cell centers while those from the clinostat appeared more dispersed. Taken together, these observations suggest that changing gravity stimulation can elicit feedback control over statolith mass by changing the size, number, and grouping of amyloplasts. These results support the starch-statolith theory of graviperception in higher plants and add to current models with a new feedback control loop as a mechanism for modulation of statolith responsiveness to inertial acceleration. 相似文献

A diallel cross was carried out among seven varieties of white clover to investigate the inheritance of some of those characters which affect potential seed yield. Peduncle length and number of seeds/floret have low narrow-sense heritabilities, while peduncle length displays the added complications of heterozygosity and non-allelic interactions. Consequently, improvements in these characters will be difficult. Seed number m-2 is a composite character which apparently exhibits heterozygosity. Higher seed yields will therefore be obtained by selection for its component characters, particularly floret number and floral density, both of which are apparently inherited in a comparatively straightforward manner. These results are discussed in the context of improving the potential seed yield of white clover. 相似文献

Summary Spontaneous nodules developed on the roots of white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Ladino) in the absence ofRhizobium. A small subpopulation of uninoculated clover plants (0.2%) exhibited white, single-to-multilobed elongated structures on
their root systems when grown without fixed nitrogen. Clonal propagation using aseptic stolons confirmed the genetic stability
of the observation. Few if any viable bacteria of unknown origin were recovered from surfacesterilized structures. Nodule
contents were incapable of eliciting nodulation. Histological observations showed that these structures possessed all the
characteristic features of indeterminate nodules, such as active meristem, cortex, endodermal layer, vascular strands, and
a central zone with parenchyma cells. Infection threads, intercellular or intracellular bacteria were absent. Instead, numerous
starch grains were observed in the central zone, a feature absent in normal nitrogen-fixing nodules. Our observation broadens
the concept of spontaneous nodulation, believed to be restricted to alfalfa (Medicago sativa), to other legumes, and suggests a degree of generality among indeterminately nodulated legumes displaying natural heterozygosity. 相似文献

The effect of aluminium (Al) on root hair length and number is quantified using solution culture techniques with genotypes from white clover cultivar Tamar, that had previously been selected for long and short root hairs. The population differences were maintained in control (0 Al) treatments, with the long-haired population having hairs three times longer than the short-haired population. At an activity of 2.2 µM Al3+, root hair length decreased in both populations, the magnitude of the decrease being greater for the long-haired population. Root hair numbers decreased in a similar manner for both populations. At an activity of 4.4 µM Al3+ or higher, root hairs virtually disappeared and root growth was very stunted. The effect of Al on root hair development has not been previously quantified, however other workers have observed reduced root hair development in other species at activities of Al greater than 2.5 µM Al3+. 相似文献

Plants of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) cv. Olwen were grown in an open glasshouse maintained at a mean temperature of 20o C and ovule growth and seed production measured. Differences in the rate of growth of ovules within ovaries were observed as early as 2 days after pollination. Ovules reached a maximum size after 8 days with the smallest only half the size of the largest. After 8 days, the smallest ovules became flaccid and shrivelled. Ovule position within the ovary had little effect on the frequency of seed set and although there was an apparently higher probability that central ovules produced a seed than those nearer the peduncle or style this was not statistically significant. Inflorescence position and floret position on the inflorescence had a significant effect on the number of seeds per floret and seed weight; the first formed inflorescences and the first florets to be pollinated on each inflorescence had more seeds per floret and heavier seeds and fewer florets with no seed than later pollinated florets. There were also differences between florets within the same whorl. The role of a number of factors which may influence floret site utilisation are discussed. 相似文献

Sixteen Trifolium repens (white clover) genotypes of diverse geographic origin were tested for differences in organogenic potential of petiole and root derived explants. Significant differences were observed between ecotypes and explant types with respect to callus initiation and plantlet regenerability. Petiole response of white clover to variations in blue light (BL) was studied on the main axis and on primary and secondary branches. The objectives of the present work were to determine (1) the time course of petiole response to BL and (2) whether these responses were dependent on petiole location. Under BL, clover had shorter petioles, and the switch to conditions without BL increased the length of forthcoming petioles. The fitting of a logistic function was used to compare the effect of BL on final petiole length, maximum elongation rate and the duration of petiole elongation between axes and phytomers. Petiole response to BL was not dependent on its location within the plant (axis type or phytomer position along the axis). A reduction in BL induced a rapid increase in leaf elongation rate, despite a small decrease in the duration of petiole elongation. Moreover, petiole response was dependent on petiole stage of development: the increase in the maximum rate of petiole elongation was inversely proportional to the petiole stage of development at the time of the switch. We conclude that the effects of BL on petiole elongation were not dependent on its position within the plant, whereas internode elongation resulted from the integration of light environment at the plant level. The difference between the responses of orthotropic and plagiotropic organs of clover to BL is discussed in relation to their structural function and localisation in the canopy. 相似文献

为揭示根际效应对多环芳烃降解的影响机制,建立恰当的植物-微生物联合修复模式,本研究向含有微生物及多环芳烃(芘和苯并\[a\]芘)的微宇宙中加入三叶草根系分泌物,分析其对多环芳烃降解的影响,研究降解过程中微生物加氧酶和16S rDNA基因拷贝数的变化,并对具有多环芳烃降解能力的微生物进行鉴定.结果表明: 分枝杆菌M1具有降解多环芳烃的能力;三叶草根系分泌物总有机碳(TOC)浓度为35.5 mg·L-1时,芘和苯并\[a\]芘降解率明显提高,分枝杆菌加氧酶基因所占比例增加,表明其促进了分枝杆菌对芘和苯并\[a\]芘的降解;在降解过程中,加氧酶基因拷贝数明显增加,而16S rDNA数量增加不明显,表明前者与多环芳烃降解过程有关,而后者和微生物数量有关.三叶草根系分泌物使分枝杆菌加氧酶基因拷贝数明显增加,从而促进了分枝杆菌对多环芳烃的降解.

Genotypes of white clover that exhibited divergent responses to P were identified in a glasshouse pot trial. Six high P-responding genotypes were selected from previously identified high P-responding cultivars and 5 low P-responding genotypes were selected from previously identified low P-responding cultivars. These were crossed in a full diallel design without selfing and reciprocals were kept separate. The P-response of progeny lines was compared with parents. High P-response was dominant over low P-response with progeny from crosses between high and low P-response genotypes being similar to the high P-response parent. Reciprocal effects were not significant. The general combining abilities of high P-response genotypes were generally greater than that of the low P-response genotypes, although there were significant specific combining abilities. Narrow sense heritabilities for P response were moderate, 0.46 based on the linear coefficient and 0.33 based on the quadratic coefficient of the fitted response curves.The mode of inheritance, feasibility of manipulating differences in P response by breeding and future directions of this work are discussed.Deceased.Deceased. 相似文献

Effects of photoperiod and temperature on vegetative growth of seedling populations and clones of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) originating from various latitudes (58°48'–69°54'N) and altitudes (up to 1100 m above sea level) were studied in a phytotron. Dry matter production, stolon elongation, petiole elongation and leaf lamina size were enhanced by long photoperiod. The requirement for long photoperiod increased with decreasing temperature. At 6°C the maximum growth was recorded under 24-h daylength. At 18°C already an increase in photoperiod from 12 to 15 h significantly enhanced growth, and maximum growth was obtained at 21-h photoperiod. The studied populations responded similarly to daylength, and the results did not indicate photoperiodic ecotypes in the material. The southernmost clones and populations generally had the highest dry matter production at all temperature treatments (6–18°C). Variation between clones within one location was, however, significant, and rapidly growing clones were found also in high-latitude locations. Dry matter production was poorly correlated with the morphological characters observed, but in some cases significant correlation with leaf lamina size was found. 相似文献

In comparison with ordinary methods of colorimetric evaluation of cyanogenic potential based on visual evaluation of the alkaline picrate reaction, a spectrophotometer-aided method could be more accurate (since it determines the exact amount of hydrogen cyanide released by the plant material), and less time-consuming as it can be performed on bulk material rather than on a number of individual plants. Ten white clover populations were evaluated by a spectrophotometer-aided method and by two visual evaluation criteria. All methods indicated the presence of large variation between populations. Visual methods gave almost identical results and allowed only for the distinction between cyanogenic and substantially acyanogenic populations. The results were only moderately consistent with those obtained by the spectrophotometer-aided method, which could detect the presence of variation also between cyanogenic populations. The effects of various incubation times (from 4 to 48 h) and of the addition of β-glucosidase on hydrogen cyanide release were also investigated. Comparable results for ranking of populations could be obtained over a range of incubation times, but at least 24 h were needed for a reliable estimation of the hydrogen cyanide produced by plants. The addition of enzyme did not increase the released cyanide. The effect of season and/or conditions of evaluation was marked on mean cyanogenic potential but limited on ranking of populations. Adaptive differentiation between populations is often proposed to be the product of multiple interacting selective pressures, although empirical support for this is scarce. In white clover, populations show adaptive differentiation in frequencies of cyanogenesis, the ability to produce hydrogen cyanide after tissue damage. This polymorphism arises through independently segregating polymorphisms for the presence/absence of two required cyanogenic components, cyanogenic glucosides and their hydrolysing enzyme. White clover populations worldwide have evolved a series of recurrent, climate‐associated clines, with higher frequencies of cyanogenic plants in warmer locations. These clines have traditionally been hypothesized to reflect a fitness trade‐off between chemical defence in herbivore‐rich areas (warmer climates) and energetic costs of producing cyanogenic components in areas of low herbivore pressure (cooler climates). Recent observational studies suggest that cyanogenic components may also be beneficial in water‐stressed environments. We investigated fitness trade‐offs associated with temperature‐induced water stress in the cyanogenesis system using manipulative experiments in growth chambers and population surveys across a longitudinal precipitation gradient in the central United States. We find that plants producing cyanogenic glucosides have higher relative fitness in treatments simulating a moderate, persistent drought stress. In water‐neutral treatments, there are energetic costs to producing cyanogenic components, but only in treatments with nutrient stress. These fitness trade‐offs are consistent with cyanogenesis frequencies in natural populations, where we find clinal variation in the proportion of plants producing cyanogenic glucosides along the precipitation gradient. These results suggest that multiple selective pressures interact to maintain this adaptive polymorphism and that modelling adaptation will require knowledge of environment‐specific fitness effects. 相似文献

Seed populations of white clover polymorphic for the presence/absence of both ovariogenic glucosides and the hydrolysing enzyme linamarase, were introduced into three natural populations. Over the first six months of life a significant increase in the frequency of linamarase containing individuals occurred. Estimated selection coefficients against plants lacking linamarase were in the region of 0.3. This result may have been due to selection at the enzyme locus alone, or to selection favouring cyanogenic individuals which possess both cyanogenic glucosides and enzyme. 相似文献
