The effects of applied growth regulators on fruit developmenthave been determined in the parthenocarpic Satsuma mandarin(Citrus unshiu Marc.). The application of either gibberellicacid or benzyladenine at flower opening, caused a transientincrease in cell division in the ovary wall, but had no significanteffect on final fruit size. Late fruit growth and final fruitsize were increased by the application of the synthetic auxin2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, which had a specific effecton the enlargement of the juice vesicles. The three growth regulators enhanced vascularization in thepedicel, but the growth effects observed were unrelated to theirinfluence on the transport capacity of the phloem but causedby their direct effects on the fruit tissues. The rapid and accurate determination of cell number and sizeis very desirable for obtaining data on growth kinetics andchanges in the physiological state of a culture. The CoulterCounter has been widely applied to bacterial and animal cellsuspension cultures to determine electronically cell numberand cell size. The application of such techniques to plant cellsuspension cultures is discussed in the following paper anddemonstrated for cultures of Pauls Scarlet Rose (Rosa sp.) andsoybean (Glycine max L.). The objective of regression smoothers is to obtain predictedvalues of a dependent variable and its first derivative fromempirical data without having to assume any particular functionalrelationship between the dependent and independent variables.An early variant of this type of analysis, specifically naturalB-splines, was first applied to growth analyses by Parsons andHunt in 1981 (Annals of Botany 48 : 341–352, 1981). Theobject of this paper is to describe and evaluate two recentadvances in this area (cubic spline smoothers and loess smoothers)in the context of plant growth analysis and compare them tonaturalB -splines. The accuracies of these methods are evaluatedusing simulated data of a type that normally causes difficultieswith other methods. A bootstrap procedure is described thatimproves the estimate of the optimal smoother parameter. Itis shown that these smoothers can capture even subtle changesin relative growth rate. The possibility has been investigated that abscisic acid (ABA)might act as a correlative inhibitor of lateral bud growth inPisum sativum and Phaseolus vulgaris. Application of ABA insmall quantities (2µg) to axillary buds on decapitatedplants of P. sativum caused appreciable inhibition of theirgrowth, and induced a compensatory growth of the bud on an adjacentnode. Application of this same quantity of ABA to axillary budson decapitated plants of Phaseolus vulgaris was without effect,but a high concentration in lanolin (1 mg g–1) did substantiallyreduce bud outgrowth. Endogenous ABA-like substances in Phaseolusvulgaris, detected by bioassay and electron capture g.l.c.,were present in similar concentrations in shoot tips, lateralbuds on intact plants and lateral buds on plants decapitated24 h earlier. The effects of applied ABA suggested that it might be involvedin the mechanism of correlative inhibition in Pisum sativum,but it was not possible to test this hypothesis by determiningendogenous ABA levels in axillary buds because of their smallsize. The evidence presented here suggests that ABA is not acorrelative inhibitor in Phaseolus vulgaris even though at highconcentration it can inhibit the growth of axillary buds.  相似文献

Mechanically-induced stress (MIS) applied by brushing the shootsof lettuce and cauliflower seedings with paper for 90 s eachday retarded the growth of water deficient and nutrient deficientseedlings as effectively as it did the growth of those wateredregularly or fed regularly with nutrient. The relationship between environmental factors and growth inImpatiens parviflora was analysed by the method of canonicalcorrelation analysis. The method was able to identify the majorrelationships which had been detected by conventional methodsof analysis. The method was also able to detect relationshipsnot identified by conventional methods. The canonical correlationanalysis also clearly showed that relationships between growthand environment detected at a plant dry weight of 100 mg couldalso be detected at 300 mg despite masking due to ontogeneticdrift and confusion by different patterns of adaptation. Itis concluded that the method of canonical correlation analysisis most useful for the analysis of considerable bodies of datarelating plant growth to environmental factors. Marked effectsof spectral composition on growth and development of both leavesand stems were demonstrated. Different spectral compositioneffects on hypocotyl and internode elongation exist. Marginal growth in the leaf of Eubrachion ambiguum, a viscaceoushemiparasite, has been investigated. This growth is accomplishedby the marginal meristem comprising the marginal initials aloneas has been described earlier by Hara (1957) in Daphne odora.To the best of the author's knowledge the present communicationis the second report of such a type of marginal growth in thedicotyledons. Culturing of organs in vitro has been successfully employedin studies on morphogenesis and nutritional requirements ofparasitic and semi-paraaitic angiosperms. Tapinanthus bangwensis,a semi-parasite, has been successfully cultured on chemicallydefined media. By and large the parasite will thrive well ina medium of mineral salts and sucrose at its optimal concentration(4 per cent). However, the parasite is able to metabolize awide range of sugars most of which show similar concentrationoptima Although the growth in vivo was simulated in vitro inthe early stages, it was found that in the later stages growthin vitro was much slower than growth in vivo. The growth differencesobserved in the different media may reflect some of the physiologicaldifferences that are responsible for the selective nature ofthe parasite's development and establishment on different hosts  相似文献

A previously published dynamic model of P uptake and plant growthhas been applied to two sets of solution culture data: thoseof Rorison (1968) for two contrasting wild species, and thoseof Brewster, Bhat and Nye (1975) for onions. Apart from thelogistic constants describing the growth curves of plants withadequate P, all other constants were independently obtainedand assumed to be the same for all species. Plant weights, Pconcentrations and solution P concentrations are all reasonablywell simulated by the model for both experiments. The big differencein responsiveness between fast- and slow-growing species inRorison's experiment is shown to be attributable to differentialdepletion of the solutions. The use of simulation models whichincorporate the depletion of the growing medium might be regardedas an alternative to attempting to eliminate depletion in suchexperiments.  相似文献

Methods of describing the geometry and position of cells bymeans of the finite method are applied to selected extant (Fucus,Cutleria, and Calypogeia) and fossil plant genera (Protosaloinia,Spongiophyton, and Parka). The gross morphology and some aspectsof the ontogeny of these six genera are simulated by means ofcomputer; the pseudo- and parenchymatous tissue organizationsare mathematically characterized. Simulated representationsof living (Fucus and Cutleria) and fossil algae (Protosalcinia,Spongio phyton, and Parka) are shown to be distinctively differentfrom those of the bryophytes. The application of the finiteelement method to problems of plant morphology makes possiblethe dynamic simulations of some aspects of growth and developmentin living plants, and the extrapolation of missing stages inthe ontogeny of fossil plants.  相似文献

The culture media for the in vitro pollen assay of Brassicaspecies have so far shown good percentage germination, but limitedpollen tube growth. It is reported here that by lowering sucroseconcentration from 20% to 5 or 10 % and by adding polyethyleneglycol 4000 in the culture medium, high percentage germinationand high tube growth (10 times that in the standard media) canbe achieved in three species of cultivated Brassica. This improvedmedium should be useful in fundamental and applied studies onthe pollen biology of Brassica species. An attempt has been made to apply some simple statistical techniquesto the taxonomy of a problematical group of species within thegenus Sphacelaria Lyngb. Measurements were carried out on materialcollected from the field, material made available from Herbariumcollections and on material grown under experimental conditionsThe main characteristics considered are cell and filament dimensions,although certain reproductive structures have also been measured. It has been found that the number of longitudinal divisionsin each segment of the main axes and the primary branches hasa profound effect on the over-all appearance of the fronds ofthe three species investigated. Segment length breadth ratioand frond stiffness have been shown to be dependent on the numberof longitudinal walls. This characteristic has enabled one ofthe species, S. cirrosa (Roth) Ag., to be readily distinguishedfrom the other two. Another factor shown to be important is the determinate patternof growth displayed by S. cirrosa as opposed to the indeterminatepattern displayed by S. fusca (Huds ) Ag. and S. furcigera (Kutz.)Sauv. The pattern of growth affects the number of longitudinalwalls, filament width, and the relative lengths of the primarybranches. The angle at which branches emanate from the main axes has beenshown to be a useful characteristic in this group of species. The variability in the number of arms produced by each propagulepresents an interesting problem which has only been described,experimental work suggesting no explanation for this phenomenon.The degree of variability is clearly different in each speciesand is useful taxonomically if a large enough sample is availablefor examination.  相似文献

Enzymatic hydrolysis of starch in lucerne (Medicago sativa L.)taproots is the conventional method used to determine the quantityof carbohydrates allocated to regrowth. Etiolated growth froma taproot could be used to quantify total root biomass allocatedto regrowth. This study compared concentrations of non-structuralcarbohydrates, as measured by -amylase hydrolysis of starchto glucose, to concentrations of non-structural biomass, asmeasured by etiolated growth from lucerne taproots placed inan incubator and plants in situ. The concentration of starchfrom enzymatically assayed taproots was 325 g kg-1 expressedas glucose equivalents. Etiolated growth and weight loss byrespiration from plants grown in the incubator accounted for524 g of actual biomass per kg of root. There was 46·2g kg-1 of N, 3·1 of P, and 33·1 of K in the etiolatedgrowth. An 88% increase in etiolated growth dry weight was observedfrom plants in situ compared to taproots placed in the incubator.Accurate quantification on non-structural biomass should notbe limited to sampling just the taproot, but must included theentire root system. Compared to determining non-structural carbohydratesby enzymatic hydrolysis of starch, the procedure used in determiningnon-structural biomass by etiolate growth gave results in unitsrelative to the plant. A physiological analysis of crop growth, reported in the previouspapers in this series, is extended to deal with the growth ofspaced plants, and applied to the growth data for M. atropurpureumsubject to several successive cycles of water deficit. Differences in growth between stressed and unstressed plantscan be quantitatively attributed to a reduction in the photosyntheticactivity of the leaves of stressed plants induced by increasingtheir leaf water deficits, and to an increase in the rate ofleaf abscission by the stressed plants. A morphological study of natural populations of Tabellaria infresh water suggested that there were two fundamentally differenttypes of growth (and therefore frustule structure) in the genus,and this has been confirmed by means of unialgal clone cultures.The existence of these different types of growth forms the basisfor a revision of the genus. The objective of this study was to assess the relative rolesof leaf water status and root-sourced signals in mediating beanleaf responses to root hypoxia. To do so, the roots of beanplants under varied VPD (0.95 kPa to 0.25 KPa) were made hypoxic.Under all conditions, leaf growth rates and stomatal conductanceswere reduced. There was a transitory decline in leaf water potentialat high VPD which accounted for the initial reduction in leafgrowth rates and stomatal conductance. At low VPD, no waterdeficits were detected. Leaf growth inhibition and reduced stomatalconductance under low VPD treatments were unrelated to leafwater status and must be induced by some other factor. In vitrogrowth of leaf discs was reduced by xylem sap collected fromhypoxic roots. Exogenously applied ABA, at high concentrationsin KCl and sucrose, or at low concentrations diluted in xylemsap from aerated plants, inhibited in vitro growth of leaf discs.Applications of ABA in the transpiration stream reduced stomatalconductance.  相似文献

Four methods of determining the substrate requirements for synthesisof a kiwifruit [Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang etA. R. Ferguson var. deliciosa cv. Hayward] berry were comparedusing data derived from common kiwifruit berry samples collectedfrom anthesis to fruit maturity. The four methods were basedon fruit proximal analysis, elemental analysis, heats of combustion,or tissue carbon content. All methods gave similar patternsof seasonal costs and values of final cost to the plant (mean1.21 g glucose g–1 season–1) but there was lessagreement for growth respiration (mean 0.147 g glucose g–1season–1). This is the first time that a continuous recordof growth cost over the course of development has been presented,and the trends in seasonal cost reflect the uptake into andsynthesis of the different biochemical constituents in the fruit.The differences between the results of each method reflect theunderlying assumptions used in their development. An in vitro procedure promoting the rapid growth and proteinincrease of soya bean cotyledons has been developed. The amountof protein synthesized varied greatly depending on the nitrogen(N) source provided. Glutamine was the most effective N source,while inorganic forms of N were ineffective. Growth and proteinsynthesis were both more rapid in vitro than in vivo. Underthe best conditions, soya bean cotyledons increased 8-fold bothin dry weight and in protein in 6 days. The formation of the7S and 11S storage proteins in vitro was similar to that invivo. Hence, this in vitro culture method is appropriate forstudying legume seed storage protein synthesis under controlledconditions.  相似文献
