Heat balance during exercise in the sun   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
10 male subjects, dressed only in white shorts, exercised for 120 min at 92 W on a bicycle ergometer suspended in a balance. For the first 60 min they were exposed to the sun, from 60.-90. min they were shaded, and from 90.-120. min again exposed to the sun. In 10 experiments they faced the sun, in 10 others their backs were exposed. The values (in W) in the heat balance equation M - W +/- C +/- R +/- E +/- L +/- S = 0 were measured by partitional calorimetry: M metabolic rate, W external work rate, C convective heat loss, R short and long wave radiation exchange, E evaporative sweat loss, L pulmonary evaporative loss, and S rate of heat storage. Means of the measured values (W) are shown below. R in the heat balance equation equals the radiative short wave (Rgs) and long wave (Rgl) heat gains minus the radiative long wave heat loss (Rll). (table; see text) The direct gain from solar radiation is approximately 100 W. The thermoregulatory responses of menstruant women to exercise in dry heat (dry-bulb temperature/wet-bulb temperature = 48/25 degrees C) were evaluated at three times during the menstrual cycle: menstrual flow (MF), 3-5 days during midcycle including ovulation (OV), and in the middle of the luteal phase (LU). Serum concentrations of estradiol-17 beta (E2), progesterone (Pg), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured by radioimmunoassay, and these values were used to determine the dates of OV (peak LH and FSH) and LU (peak postovulatory Pg). After heat acclimation, subjects received heat stress tests (HST) consisting of a 2-h cycle-ergometer exercise at 30% of maximal O2 consumption in the heat. Rectal (Tre) and mean skin (Tsk) temperatures, heart rate (HR), and sweat rate on the chest and thigh were recorded continuously. Total sweat loss (Msw), as indicated by weight loss, was recorded every 20 min, and equivalent water replacement was given. Steady-state exercise metabolic rate (M) was measured at 45 and 110 min. Seven of eight subjects had ovulatory cycles during experimental months. At rest, Tre was lowest at OV and significantly higher at LU. During steady-state exercise both Tre and Tsk were lowest at OV and significantly higher at LU. There were no differences between phases in Msw, sweat rate on the chest and thigh or M. Comparative mutagenesis and possible synergistic interaction between broad-spectrum (313- to 405-nm) near-ultraviolet (black light bulb [BLB]) radiation and 254-nm radiation were studied in Escherichia coli strains WP2 (wild type), WP2s (uvrA), WP10 (recA), WP6 (polA), WP6s (polA uvrA), WP100 (uvrA recA), and WP5 (lexA). With BLB radiation, strains WP2s and WP6s demonstrated a high level of mutagenesis, whereas strains WP2, WP5, WP6, WP10, and WP100 did not demonstrate significant mutagenesis. In contrast, 254-nm radiation was mutagenic in strains WP2, WP2s, WP6, and WP6s, but strains WP5, WP10, and WP100 were not significantly mutated. The absence of mutagenesis by BLB radiation in lexA and recA strains WP10, WP5, and WP100 suggests that lex+ rec+ repair may play a major role in mutagenesis by both BLB and 254-nm radiation. The hypothesis that BLB radiation selectively inhibits rec+ lex+ repair was tested by sequential BLB-254-nm radiation. With strain WP2, a fluence of 30 J/m2 at 254 nm induced trp+ revertants at a frequency of 15 X 10(-6). However, when 10(5) J/m2 or more of BLB radiation preceded the 254-nm exposure, no trp+ revertants could be detected. A similar inhibition of 254-nm mutagenesis was observed with strain WP6 (polA). However, strains WP2s (uvrA) and wP6s (polA uvrA) showed enhanced 254-nm mutagenesis when a prior exposure to BLB radiation was given.  相似文献

Anthropometric measurements and observations of physiological responses to heat were made in the autumn on 20 young male Japanese who were born and reared in the main islands of Japan (group M), 20 young male Japanese who were born and reared in Okinawa, subtropical zone, and who have lived in the main islands of Japan, temperate zone, for less than three years (group O). In winter the same tests were made on 25 subjects in group M and 17 subjects in group O. Group O showed lower skinfold thickness and less body fat content than group M. Both groups showed lower skinfold thickness and less body fat content in autumn than in winter. Group O was characterized by lower sweat rate and lower Na concentration in sweat for a given rise in body temperature. In both groups, greater sweat loss, lower Na concentration in sweat and smaller rise in body temperature were observed in autumn than in winter. Group O showed higher heat tolerance than group M when assessed by our numerical index for the assessment of heat tolerance. It was assumed that capacity of non-evaporative heat dissipatïon for group O was superior to that for group M, and the efficiency of sweat for cooling body in group O was better than that in group M. Differences in anthropometrical characteristics and physiological responses to heat between the two groups might reflect more advanced heat acclimatization of subjects in group O when compared with those in group M.  相似文献

The effect of 90-min heat exposure (46 degrees C, 35 mbar) on plasma aldosterone (PA) patterns was studied and the respective roles of plasma renin activity (PRA), adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), Na+ and K+ concentrations in the control of PA response were in investigated in eight subjects on a low sodium diet and in five subjects on a high sodium diet. In all subjects, transitory PA increases of varying importance were observed, which were not related to sweat losses (less than 1% bodyweight) or to rectal temperature rise. In sodium-repleted subjects, basal PA and PRA levels as well as heat-induced rises were low (mean PA peak level = 12.62 +/- 1.15 ng/100 ml). They were enhanced by sodium depletion and PA reached a mean peak level of 34.07 +/- 2.73 ng/100 ml. But, in both conditions, the heat-induced PA peaks were 3-times higher than the initial levels. PA correlated with PRA in all but one of the sodium-repleted subjects and in 6 of the 8 sodium-depleted subjects. ACTH release, as measured by plasma cortisol (PC) levels, occurred in those subjects who noted an increased feeling of annoyance and discomfort. Thus, PA correlated positively with PC in 4 sodium-depleted subjects. A high sodium intake improved heat-tolerance. Plasma K+ and Na+ concentrations were not significantly modified by exposure to heat. PA increases can occur without concomitant changes in PRA, PC, K+ or Na+, which suggests that an additional factor may play a role in aldosterone regulation during acute heat exposure.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mild heat exposure on sleep stages and body temperature in older men. Ten healthy male volunteers with a mean age of 69.2 ± 1.35 years served as subjects. The experiments were carried out under two different sets of conditions: 26 °C 50% relative humidity (RH) and 32 °C 50% RH. The subjects slept from 2200 hours to 0600 hours with a cotton blanket and wearing short-sleeve pajamas and shorts on a bed covered by a sheet. Electroencephalogram, electro-occulogram and mental electromyogram recordings were made through the night. Rectal and skin temperatures were measured continuously. No significant differences were observed in sleep onset latency. In time spent in each sleep stage, wakefulness was significantly increased at 32 °C than at 26 °C. The total amount of wakefulness increased and rapid eye movement sleep (REM) decreased at 32 °C compared to 26 °C. The fall in rectal temperature was significantly suppressed and the mean skin temperature was significantly higher at 32 °C than at 26 °C. These results suggest that, for older men, even mild heat exposure during the nighttime sleep period may increase thermal load, suppress the decrease of rectal temperature, decrease REM, and increase wakefulness and whole-body sweat loss.  相似文献

Objection

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of clothing and the environment on human exposure to ultraviolet light.

Methods

The ultraviolet (ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B) light intensity was measured, and air quality parameters were recorded in 2014 in Beijing, China. Three types of clothing (white polyester cloth, pure cotton white T-shirt, and pure cotton black T-shirt) were individually placed on a mannequin. The ultraviolet (ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B) light intensities were measured above and beneath each article of clothing, and the percentage of ultraviolet light transmission through the clothing was calculated.

Results

(1) The ultraviolet light transmission was significantly higher through white cloth than through black cloth; the transmission was significantly higher through polyester cloth than through cotton. (2) The weather significantly influenced ultraviolet light transmission through white polyester cloth; transmission was highest on clear days and lowest on overcast days (ultraviolet A: P=0.000; ultraviolet B: P=0.008). (3) Air quality parameters (air quality index and particulate matter 2.5 and 10) were inversely related to the ultraviolet light intensity that reached the earth’s surface. Ultraviolet B transmission through white polyester cloth was greater under conditions of low air pollution compared with high air pollution.

Conclusion

Clothing color and material and different types of weather affected ultraviolet light transmission; for one particular cloth, the transmission decreased with increasing air pollution.  相似文献

This investigation was designed to determine the relationship between the levels of plasma aldosterone and eccrine sweat gland sodium excretion following exercise and heat acclimation. Ten subjects exercised at 45% of their maximal O2 uptake in a hot (40 degrees C), moderately humid (45% relative humidity) environment for 2 h/day on ten consecutive days. Acclimation was verified by significant reductions in exercise heart rate, rectal temperature, and heat storage, as well as significant elevation of resting plasma volume (12%, P less than 0.05) and exercise sweat rate on day 10 compared with day 1 of acclimation. During exercise, the concentration and total content of sodium in sweat as well as plasma aldosterone were significantly decreased from day 1 to day 10. The ratio of sweat sodium reabsorbed to plasma aldosterone concentration was significantly increased from day 1 to day 10 after both 1 and 2 h of exercise. These data indicate that plasma aldosterone concentrations decrease following heat acclimation; and eccrine gland responsiveness to aldosterone, as represented by sweat sodium reabsorption, may be augumented through exercise and heat acclimation.  相似文献

The present paper made the heat balance equation (HBE) for nude or minimally clad subjects a linear function of mean skin temperature (t sk) by applying new equations for sweating efficiency (η sw) and thermoregulatory sweat rate (S wR). As the solution of the HBE, the equation predicting t sk was derived and used for a heat strain scale of subjects. The η sw was proportional to the reciprocal of S w/E max (S w, sweat rate; E max maximum evaporative capacity) and the S wR was proportional to t sk with a parameter of the sweating capacity of the subject. The errors of predicted t sk from observations due to the approximation of η sw were examined based on experimental data conducted on eight young male subjects. The value of errors of t sk was ?0.10?±?0.42 °C (mean?±?sample standard deviation (SSD)). We aim to apply the predicted t sk of a subject at a level of sweating capacity as a heat strain scale of a function of four environmental factors (dry- and wet-bulb temperatures, radiation, and air velocity) and three human factors (metabolic rate, sweating capacity, and clothing (≤0.2clo)).  相似文献

Responses to heat and exercise were studied in 9 male Japanese subjects who walked on a treadmill at a speed of 4.4 – 4.8 km/h at 0 grade for 2 hours in a climatic chamber in July 1973, in Nagoya Japan. The results were compared with those obtained in a similar study made in July 1966 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following results were obtained: (1) Japanese showed a 1.8 times higher rate of sweating than Caucasians. Total sweat from the whole body during 2 hours walk was also higher in Japanese. (2) Japanese exhibited lower chloride concentration in local sweat than Caucasians in spite of their higher dietary salt intake, higher serum chloride concentration and higher rate of sweating. While in Caucasians the sweat chloride concentration showed a tendency to continue to rise during the later period of the walk in spite of decreasing sweat rate after sweat suppression occurred, in Japanese it tended to fall in parallel with the sweat rate. No difference was observed in the length of the latent time of sweat suppression. (3) There were no differences in rectal temperature or heart rate, both at the period of equilibrium rectal temperature and at the end of the walk. (4) Mean skin temperature during the walk was significantly higher in Japanese than in Caucasians. It was concluded that the Japanese group was better heat acclimatized than Caucasians, though the two groups were considered to have been naturally heat exposed by season to the same extent.  相似文献

The levels of complement C3 and C4 components were determined in non-indigenous (creoles) and indigenous (Warao) populations, the latter with an extremely high tuberculosis (TB) rate. Serum samples from 209 adults were studied and classified in 4 groups taking into account tuberculin skin tests (TST): (1) the group of Warao patients (58 positive for the TST, WP TST+ and 9 negative for the TST, WP TST-), (2) the group of creole patients (34 positive for the TST, CP TST+ and 9 negative for the TST, CP TST-), (3) the group of healthy Warao controls (38 positive and 14 negative for TST, WC TST+ and WC TST-, respectively), (4) the creole controls (26 positive and 21 negative for the TST, CC TST+ and CC TST-, respectively). With respect to the results concerning the measurement of both complement C3 and C4 components with the exception of the WC TST and the CC groups, the WP TST+ and WP TST- as well as WC TST+ groups showed a significant frequency of individuals with decreased levels of complement C3 component (20.6, 33.3, and 26.3%, respectively) and also C4 component (12.0, 11.1, and 13.3%, respectively) in comparison to both creole patients (CP TST+, 8.82% and CP TST-, 0% and CP TST+, 5.88% and CP TST-, 0%) for C3 and C4, respectively. The study of these parameters carried out in 15 Warao subjects with active infection, before and after anti-TB chemotherapy,statisticallyconfirmedthat the effective chemotherapy did not restore normal levels of the complement C3 and C4 components among Warao patients. Aditional tests for hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection, and the profile of the hepatic proteins were not associated to the deficiency in production of the complement components.In conclusion, the results show that within the Warao population, a high percentage of subjects exhibit decreased levels of both complement C3 and C4 components independent of latent or active infection and the status of TST.  相似文献

This study sought to investigate the effects of humid heat exposure in later sleep segments on sleep stages and body temperature in humans. The subjects were eight healthy males, from whom informed consent had been obtained. The experiments were carried out under three different sets of conditions: a control climate [air temperature (Ta)=26°C, relative humidity (RH)=50%] (C); a humid heat climate (Ta=32°C, RH=80%) (H); and a humid heat exposure in later sleep segments (C for the first 3 h 45 min, followed by a 30-min transition to H, which was then maintained for the last 3 h 45 min) (C–H). Electroencephalogram, EOG, and mental electromyogram, rectal temperature (Tre), and skin temperature (Tsk) were continuously measured. The total amount of wakefulness was significantly increased in H compared to C–H or C. Compared to C, wakefulness in C–H and H was significantly increased during later sleep segments. Tre and mean Tsk were significantly higher in H than in C–H or C. In C–H, Tsk and Tre increased to levels equal to those observed in H after Ta and RH increase. Whole body sweat loss was significantly lower in C–H and C than in H. These results suggest that humid heat exposure in the later sleep segment reduces thermal load as compared to full-night humid heat exposure. In daily life, the use of air conditioning in the initial sleep hours can protect sleep and thermoregulation.  相似文献

Objectives: People of African descent may be at greater risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) compared with whites. We examined the associations among MS markers, body composition, and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in black Haitians and in white subjects living in Quebec, Canada. Research Methods and Procedures: Forty randomly selected Haitians were matched with 40 white subjects for age, sex, and BMI. Glycemic status and insulin resistance were assessed based on a 3‐hour glucose tolerance test. Blood lipids, blood pressure, abdominal fat (computed tomography), and waist circumference (WC) were measured. RMR was estimated by indirect calorimetry. Results: Triglycerides were significantly correlated with blood pressure only in Haitians and with the area under the curve for insulin only in whites. Haitians had significantly (p < 0.05) lower triglycerides and higher high‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol concentrations but higher blood pressure than whites at any given WC value. General linear models showed that Haitians had less visceral adipose tissue than whites for the same WC. RMR was lower among Haitians for any given value of BMI or WC than in whites. Also, WC was more strongly associated with glucose area under the curve and to log‐homeostasis model assessment in white than in Haitian subjects. Discussion: The MS may be ethnospecific in its features and etiology. The standard anthropometric indices of obesity may not be as effective in populations of African descent compared with whites, unless appropriate cut‐off values are defined.  相似文献

Studies have examined adding protein to carbohydrate–electrolyte rehydration drinks, but the effects of protein in isolation remain unknown. Ten subjects completed two trials in which they were dehydrated (~2 % of pre-exercise body mass) by intermittent cycling in the heat. Subjects then rehydrated (150 % total mass loss) over 1 h with mineral water (W) or mineral water plus 20 g L?1 whey protein isolate (WP) and remained in the laboratory for a further 4 h. Blood and urine samples were provided pre-exercise, post-exercise, post-rehydration and every hour thereafter. From blood samples, serum osmolality, change in plasma volume and plasma albumin content was determined, whilst the volume and osmolality of urine samples were determined. There was no difference between trials for total urine volume [W: 1,234 (358) mL; WP: 1,306 (268) mL; P = 0.409], drink retention [W: 40 (14) %; WP: 37 (14) %; P = 0.322] or net fluid balance [W: ?605 (318) mL; WP: ?660 (274) mL; P = 0.792] 4-h post-rehydration. Plasma volume was greater 3 and 4 h post-drinking during WP, and plasma albumin content relative to pre-exercise was increased 1–4 h post-drinking in WP only. These results suggest that addition of 20 g L?1 whey protein isolate neither enhances nor inhibits post-exercise rehydration, when a volume equivalent to 150 % of sweat losses is ingested in 1 h. As post-exercise nutritional requirements are multifactorial (rehydration, glycogen resynthesis, myofibrillar/mitochondrial protein synthesis), these data demonstrate that when post-exercise protein intake might benefit recovery or adaptation, this can be achieved without compromising rehydration.  相似文献

This study examined the involvement of the hormones aldosterone and prolactin in sweat gland function during heat acclimatization. Two groups of male subjects (n = 8) were tested - one receiving a placebo (control), the other receiving bromocriptine. Both groups performed cycle ergometer exercise at 50% of maximal oxygen uptake over 10 consecutive days in an environmental chamber maintained at 39 degrees C and 30% relative humidity. Duration of exercise was 90 min on days 2-4 and 6-9, and 45 min on test days 1, 5 and 10. Electrolyte concentrations were determined by total body washdown. Prolactin increased (p less than 0.001) during exercise on day 1 in the control group but not on days 5 and 10. In contrast, prolactin was suppressed by bromocriptine and did not rise in response to exercise or heat exposure. Plasma aldosterone increased during exercise in both groups, showing no differences between groups. The sodium concentration in sweat decreased significantly (p less than 0.05) in the control group from day 1 to 10 but was unchanged in the treatment group. These data suggest that acclimatization-related changes in sweat gland function may be attenuated by increases in central dopaminergic activity and implicate prolactin in control of sweat gland function.  相似文献

This study assessed whether replacing sweat losses with sodium-free fluid can lower the plasma sodium concentration and thereby precipitate the development of hyponatremia. Ten male endurance athletes participated in one 1-h exercise pretrial to estimate fluid needs and two 3-h experimental trials on a cycle ergometer at 55% of maximum O2 consumption at 34 degrees C and 65% relative humidity. In the experimental trials, fluid loss was replaced by distilled water (W) or a sodium-containing (18 mmol/l) sports drink, Gatorade (G). Six subjects did not complete 3 h in trial W, and four did not complete 3 h in trial G. The rate of change in plasma sodium concentration in all subjects, regardless of exercise time completed, was greater with W than with G (-2.48 +/- 2.25 vs. -0.86 +/- 1.61 mmol. l-1. h-1, P = 0.0198). One subject developed hyponatremia (plasma sodium 128 mmol/l) at exhaustion (2.5 h) in the W trial. A decrease in sodium concentration was correlated with decreased exercise time (R = 0.674; P = 0.022). A lower rate of urine production correlated with a greater rate of sodium decrease (R = -0. 478; P = 0.0447). Sweat production was not significantly correlated with plasma sodium reduction. The results show that decreased plasma sodium concentration can result from replacement of sweat losses with plain W, when sweat losses are large, and can precipitate the development of hyponatremia, particularly in individuals who have a decreased urine production during exercise. Exercise performance is also reduced with a decrease in plasma sodium concentration. We, therefore, recommend consumption of a sodium-containing beverage to compensate for large sweat losses incurred during exercise.  相似文献

Although waist circumference (WC) is a marker of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), WC cut‐points are based on BMI category. We compared WC‐BMI and WC‐VAT relationships in blacks and whites. Combining data from five studies, BMI and WC were measured in 1,409 premenopausal women (148 white South Africans, 607 African‐Americans, 186 black South Africans, 445 West Africans, 23 black Africans living in United States). In three of five studies, participants had VAT measured by computerized tomography (n = 456). Compared to whites, blacks had higher BMI (29.6 ± 7.6 (mean ± s.d.) vs. 27.6 ± 6.6 kg/m2, P = 0.001), similar WC (92 ± 16 vs. 90 ± 15 cm, P = 0.27) and lower VAT (64 ± 42 vs. 101 ± 59 cm2, P < 0.001). The WC‐BMI relationship did not differ by race (blacks: β (s.e.) WC = 0.42 (.01), whites: β (s.e.) WC = 0.40 (0.01), P = 0.73). The WC‐VAT relationship was different in blacks and whites (blacks: β (s.e.) WC = 1.38 (0.11), whites: β (s.e.) WC = 3.18 (0.21), P < 0.001). Whites had a greater increase in VAT per unit increase in WC. WC‐BMI and WC‐VAT relationships did not differ among black populations. As WC‐BMI relationship did not differ by race, the same BMI‐based WC guidelines may be appropriate for black and white women. However, if WC is defined by VAT, race‐specific WC thresholds are required.  相似文献

Body temperature regulation was studied in 6 male subjects during an acclimation procedure involving uninterrupted heat exposure for 5 successive days and nights in a hot dry environment (ambient temperature = 35 degrees C, dew-point temperature = 7 degrees C; air velocity = 0.2 m.s-1). Data were obtained at rest and during exercise (relative mechanical workload = 35% VO2max). At rest, hourly measurements were made of oesophageal and 4 local skin temperatures, to allow the calculation of mean skin temperature, and of body motility and heart rate. During the working periods these measurements were made at 5 min intervals. Hourly whole-body weight loss was measured at rest on a sensitive platform scale while in the working condition just before starting and immediately after completing the bicycle exercise. The results show that, in both exercise and at rest, the successive heat exposures increased the sweat gland output during the first 3 days. Afterwards, sweat rate decreased without any corresponding change in body temperature. For the fixed workload, the sweat rate decline was associated with a decrease in circulatory strain. Adjustments in both sweating and circulatory mechanisms occur in the first 3 days of continuous heat exposure. The overall sweat rate decline could involve a redistribution of the regional sweating rates which enhances the sweat gland activities of skin areas with maximal evaporative efficiencies.  相似文献

The serotonin system may contribute to reduced human performance when hypohydrated in the heat. This study determined whether branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation could sustain exercise and cognitive performance in the heat (40 degrees C dry bulb, 20% relative humidity) when hypohydrated by 4% of body mass. Seven heat-acclimated men completed two experimental trials, each consisting of one preparation and one test day. On day 1, a low-carbohydrate diet was eaten and subjects performed exhaustive cycling (morning) and treadmill exercise in the heat (afternoon) to lower muscle glycogen and achieve the desired hypohydration level. On day 2, subjects consumed an isocaloric BCAA and carbohydrate (BC) or carbohydrate-only drink during exercise. Experimental trials included 60 min of cycle ergometry (50% peak oxygen uptake) followed by a 30-min time trial in the heat. A cognitive test battery was completed before and after exercise, and blood samples were taken. BC produced a 2.5-fold increase (P < 0.05) in plasma BCAA and lowered (P < 0.05) the ratios of total tryptophan to BCAA and large neutral amino acid. Blood prolactin, glucose, lactate, and osmolality were not different between trials but increased over time. Cardiovascular and thermoregulatory data were also similar between trials. BC did not alter time-trial performance, cognitive performance, mood, perceived exertion, or perceived thermal comfort. We conclude that BCAA does not alter exercise or cognitive performance in the heat when subjects are hypohydrated.  相似文献

Different methods have been compared for the estimation of solar heat load on man. The comparison comprised several methods based on the calculation of absorbed solar radiation and one method for calculation of mean radiant temperature (Mrt). Regression analysis was carried out for predicted values and values calculated for a vertical cylinder, assumed as an analog model of a standing man. Regression of mean skin temperature, measured in 10 subjects exposed to solar radiation under a variety of climatic conditions, on predicted radiant heat load was also analysed. Mean skin temperature correlated best withMrt, accounting for more than 50% of the variance. The results indicated that three methods provide a realistic estimation of the radiation heat load, whereas some methods show deviations of several hundred per cent.  相似文献
