Aim To describe variation in forest bird communities with altitude and latitude. Location Eastern Madagascar. Methods Extraction of data from forest bird inventories conducted in eastern Madagascar. Results There is a strong decline in species richness with altitude, above about 1300 m. Below this altitude, species richness is about constant or declines slightly. Seventy-eight percent of species occurring regularly in forest are absent from at least one of low, mid-altitude or high altitude forest. Of eighty-seven species occurring regularly in forest, only four or possibly five have latitudinally limited distributions, over a latitudinal range of over 1200 km. Three or possibly four are limited to the northern two-thirds, and one appears to be at least much more common in the southern half. Main conclusions Eastern Malagasy rain forest birds show previously unanalysed variation in altitudinal distribution. There is much less latitudinal variation. Species currently considered threatened are concentrated in the lowland and high-altitude zones. This may be at least partly due to lack of survey effort giving the impression that these species are rare, but lowland forests at least are under great human pressure. Bird conservation initiatives would probably have most effect if targeted at lowland east Malagasy rain forest.  相似文献

The study was conducted to compare species richness and diversity in different ecosystems and abiotic factors. The results showed that the sacred groves had a plant genetic diversity composed of a total of 42, 65 and 82 ethno‐botanical species of herbs, shrubs and trees, respectively, with varied qualities. There were six herbaceous species common in the fallow ecosystem and the sacred groves, 35 herbaceous species found in the sacred grove and absent in the fallow vegetation and 70 herbaceous species in the fallow vegetation and absent in the ground layer of the sacred groves. Thirty‐two regenerated species and 49 nonregenerated tree species were found in the sacred groves. The herbaceous α‐diversity was significantly higher in the fallows than the sacred groves at the low altitude. The tree species richness was higher at the low altitude compared to the high altitude with tree β‐diversity increasing with altitude. Varying combinations of soil pH, total P, total K, CEC and slope per cent were related to some of the parameters evaluated. Biodiversity changes in the sacred groves may be governed by biophysical drivers, while a combination of human and biophysical explained the variation in rotational fallow vegetation.  相似文献

Increased travel to high altitude areas by mountaineers and nonclimbing tourists has emphasized the clinical problems associated with rapid ascent. Acute mountain sickness affects most sojourners at elevations above 10,000 feet. Symptoms are usually worse on the second or third day after arrival. Gradual ascent, spending one to three days at an intermediate altitude, and the use of acetazolamide (Diamox) will prevent or ameliorate symptoms in most instances. Serious and potentially fatal problems, such as high altitude pulmonary edema or cerebral edema, occur in approximately 0.5 percent to 1.0 percent of visitors to elevations above 10,000 feet—especially with heavy physical exertion on arrival, such as climbing or skiing. Early recognition, high flow oxygen therapy and prompt descent are crucially important in management. Our knowledge of the causes of these and other high altitude problems, such as retinal hemorrhage, systemic edema and pulmonary hypertension, is still incomplete. Even less is known of the effect of high altitudes on medical conditions common at sea level or on the action of commonly used drugs.  相似文献

The decline of species richness with altitude is one of the most obvious patterns in ecology and results from the combination of ecological and evolutionary mechanisms. In harsh high-altitude environments, the effect of altitude usually overrules other environmental variables related to biodiversity. Studies using species richness along altitude gradients in high altitude are relatively numerous for lakes, but not for ponds. However, due to their special features, such as small size, high isolation and regional variability, ponds have been proved to be different systems compared to lakes. In high-altitude waterbodies, species of the family Chironomidae often dominate in benthic invertebrate communities and thus serve as an ideal model to study aquatic community changes along an altitude gradient. However, due to the time-consuming processing and expertise needed to identify the species, chironomids are often excluded from regular surveys. In the present study, we sampled 66 Tatra ponds over a 1100-m altitude gradient for benthic invertebrates, with special attention to chironomids. Out of the total 122 taxa collected, Chironomidae constituted the richest group with 58 taxa, being present in all the study ponds. The most diverse pond supported 13 chironomid taxa, and mean diversity was 6 taxa/pond. While total invertebrate richness decreased with altitude, chironomid richness showed only a weak negative response to altitude. The proportion of total chironomid diversity made up of Tanypodinae and Chironominae subfamilies decreased with altitude, while the opposite trend was recorded for the proportion of Diamesinae and Orthocladiinae.  相似文献

1. Despite growing knowledge on the relationship between ecological variables and individual immune function, data on the spatial variability of immune defence in invertebrate natural populations are scarce. 2. Here, we use replicated populations of the butterfly Lycaena tityrus from different altitudes to investigate genetic variation in the melanin‐based encapsulation response. As high‐ and low‐altitude populations differ in cuticular pupal melanisation, we further tested for any associations between pupal melanisation and parasite resistance. 3. Although pupal melanisation was higher at higher compared with lower altitudes (and at a higher compared with a lower rearing temperature), any obvious relations to the encapsulation response were absent. Further phenotypic correlations within groups were significant in one out of four cases only, suggesting that in L. tityrus encapsulation operates largely independent of cuticular melanisation. 4. A significant interaction between altitude and temperature indicated that high‐altitude animals show a stronger melanisation response than low‐altitude ones at the lower temperature and vice versa, indicating local adaptation to different climates.  相似文献

Weight loss is frequently observed after acute exposure to high altitude. However, the magnitude and rate of weight loss during acute exposure to high altitude has not been clarified in a controlled prospective study. The present study was performed to evaluate weight loss at high altitude. A group of 120 male subjects [aged (32±6) years] who worked on the construction of the Golmud-Lhasa Railway at Kunlun Mountain (altitude of 4 678 m) served as volunteer subjects for this study. Eighty-five workers normally resided at sea level (sea level group) and 35 normally resided at an altitude of 2 200 m (moderate altitude group). Body weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference were measured in all subjects after a 7-day stay at Golmud (altitude of 2 800 m, baseline measurements). Measurements were repeated after 33-day working on Kunlun Mountain. In order to examine the daily rate of weight loss at high altitude, body weight was measured in 20 subjects from the sea level group (sea level subset group) each morning before breakfast for 33 d at Kunlun Mountain. According to guidelines established by the Lake Louise acute mountain sickness (AMS) consensus report, each subject completed an AMS self-report questionnaire two days after arriving at Kunlun Mountain. After 33-day stay at an altitude of 4 678 m, the average weight loss for the sea level group was 10.4% (range 6.5% to 29%), while the average for the moderate altitude group was 2.2% (-2% to 9.1%). The degree of weight loss (Δ weight loss) after a 33-day stay at an altitude of 4 678 m was significantly correlated with baseline body weight in the sea level group (r=0.677, P<0.01), while the correlation was absent in the moderate altitude group (r=0.296, P>0.05). In the sea level subset group, a significant weight loss was observed within 20 d, but the weight remained stable thereafter. AMS-score at high altitude was significantly higher in the sea level group (4.69±2.48) than that in the moderate altitude group (2.97±1.38), and was significantly correlated with baseline body weight. These results indicate that (1) the person with higher body weight during stay at high altitude loses more weight, and this is more pronounced in sea level natives when compared with that in moderate altitude natives; (2) heavier individuals are more likely to develop AMS than leaner individuals during exposure to high-altitude hypoxia.  相似文献

This 3-yr study documents large variation in pollination and seed quality in birches (Betula) in northern Sweden between taxa, high and low altitude populations, and among years Seed quality was positively correlated with pollination degree and improved by pollen supplementation in B pubescens ssp pubescens in the mountain area, indicating pollen limitation Betula pendula showed the same tendency, but less pronounced Reduced sexual reproduction of B pendula in the mountain area might more often be due to limited resources for seed maturation and defense of the seeds against predispersal seed predation In contrast, coastal populations of both species display relatively high pollination rates and supplemental pollination had no effect on seed quality, suggesting that pollen limitation is rare or absent here The mountain birch Betula pubescens ssp tortuosa showed generally lower pollination and seed quality compared with B pubescens ssp pubescens , but not compared with mountain populations of B pendula It is concluded that pollen limitation may occur in Betula , but to what extent varies with taxon, altitude and year The seed quality is also strongly affected by other factors such as infections of gall midges (Semudobia spp, Diptera Cecidomyndae) and incomplete seed maturation  相似文献

Altitudinal gradients are convenient subjects to investigate plant responses to air temperature. Plant growth and mortality are also affected by competition at any altitude. This study investigated the effects of altitude and competition on absolute diameter growth rate (ADGR) and mortality of the conifer Abies sachalinensis by using 13-year data. This study was done at two altitudes (200 and 1,000 m a.s.l.) in northern Japan. Local crowding by conifers and broad-leaved trees reduced ADGR of target trees. ADGR was lower in high altitude than low altitude at any DBH and any degree of local crowding because of the short growing season. Observed size-dependent mortality was a U-shaped pattern against DBH at the two altitudes. Smaller and larger trees tended to die of suppression (standing-dead) and disturbances (stem-broken and uprooting), respectively. Mortality of standing-dead trees was negatively correlated with ADGR, irrespective of altitude, i.e., ADGR was a good predictor of mortality. Thus, mortality of standing-dead trees was estimated to be greater at high altitude than low altitude at any degree of local crowding because ADGR was lower at high altitude than low altitude. By contrast, mortality due to disturbances was slightly greater at low altitude than high altitude. Thus, this study showed that a short growth period decreases growth and increases mortality due to suppression at high altitude. Although global warming may increase growth and survival of individual trees at high altitude by prolonging the growth period, prediction on mortality due to disturbances needs caution because the mortality is largely affected by frequency and intensity of disturbances.

Optimal use of wind by migrating birds: combined drift and overcompensation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Migrating birds may save flying time by allowing themselves to be partially drifted by strong winds at high altitude and correcting for the displacement at low altitude under relatively weaker winds. This behaviour will be favourable with strong upper winds and with wind direction approx. 30 ° to 90 ° in relation to the goal direction (following side winds). Radar observations of drift in high altitude bird migration and visual records of low altitude overcompensation are compatible with the optimal flight behaviour of migrants at high and low altitude, respectively, as predicted from this hypothesis.  相似文献

Astyanax scabripinnis, a small neotropical freshwater fish, is a headwater species living in small tributaries of many Brazilian rivers, where they form isolated populations. This species harbors a B chromosome system in several populations. Among the several kinds of Bs reported in this species, the B(M) variant, a large metacentric of a similar size to the largest A chromosome, is the most widespread in natural populations. It probably corresponds to the ancestral B type in this species and a very similar B chromosome is also found in other Astyanax species. Strong evidence suggests that this B is an isochromosome showing structural and functional homology between its two arms, as shown by satellite DNA localization and the formation of a ring B univalent during meiosis. The B(SM) and B(m) variants, a large submetacentric and a small metacentric, respectively, represent rare variants and may be derived from structural rearrangements of the B(M) chromosome. In addition, B microchromosomes (B(micro)) were found in some populations. Frequency analyses in mountain populations have shown that B chromosomes are found in populations located at high altitude, but are absent in populations at low altitude, which is consistent with their parasitic nature, given the ecological peculiarities of both kinds of populations.  相似文献

Resveratrol, as a natural polyphenolic compound, has a wide range of beneficial effects, which includes anti-tumor, cardiovascular protection, anti-oxidant and estrogen-like effects, and so on. Its various physiological properties are closely related to the therapeutic principle for prevention and treatment of high altitude hypoxia injury. Resveratrol may play an important role in relieving or curing high altitude diseases, especially high altitude polycythemia(HAPC). However, the literature about study and application of resveratrol in plateau medicine field is rarely reported up to now. In this review, we summarized the physiological effects of resveratrol, discussed the possible main principle of resveratrol for HAPC therapy, and looked forward to resveratrol's perspective or potential application in high altitude medicine.  相似文献

The moderate growth retardation frequently observed among children living at high altitude is usually assumed to result from hypoxic stress. However, such children are frequently from the poorer socioeconomic strata of their societies and may suffer malnutrition, poor hygiene, inadequate medical care, and overcrowding—factors also associated with growth retardation. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a statistically observable alteration in the growth of middle-class children of European ancestry during sojourn at high altitude. Semilongitudinal height/weight measurements were gathered retrospectively from medical records of 18 boys and 17 girls who were born at low altitude, were well-nourished and clinically normal, and who had lived at Achoma, Peru (altitude 3,200 m), continuously for 9–36 months. Measurements were divided, by sex, into four cohorts: I (3–6 months at Achoma), II (6–12 months), III (12–18 months), and IV (18–24 months); initial, presojourn, height and weight were also obtained. All heights and weights were normalized with age-specific reference values. Changes in Z scores (ΔZ) during sojourn were calculated for each subject by subtracting the score of the presojourn value from those of cohorts I–IV. Paired t-tests revealed, among the boys, a significant decline in Z score for weight during sojourn in all four cohorts. Weight scores for the girls also declined in all four cohorts, although only the change in cohort III was significant. Height scores showed a decline with time at sojourn in the boys, but in girls there is an initial drop followed by a steady increase to presojourn levels. These results are consistent with the view that moderate hypoxia exerts a primary growth-limiting effect even on healthy, well-nourished children.  相似文献

Hypersensitive C-reaction protein (hsCRP) may be a risk factor for cognitive impairment resulting from Alzheimer’s disease (AD), stroke, and vascular dementia. This study explored the correlation of peripheral blood hsCRP level with cognitive decline due to high altitude exposure. The study was conducted on 100 male military participants who had never been to high altitude. Cerebral oxygen saturation monitoring, event related potentials (P300, N200) detection, and neurocognitive assessment was performed and total hsCRP, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and homocysteine was estimated at 500m altitude, 3650m altitude, 3day, 1, and 3 month post arriving at the base camp (4400m), and 1 month after coming back to the 500m altitude. High altitude increased brain oxygen saturation, prolonged P300 and N200 latencies, injured cognitive functions, and raised plasma hsCRP levels. But they all recovered in varying degrees at 1 and 3 month post arriving at the base camp (4400m). P300 latencies and hsCRP levels were strongly correlated to cognitive performances. These results suggested that cognitive deterioration occurred during the acute period of exposure to high altitude and may recover probably owning to acclimatization after extended stay at high altitude. Plasma hsCRP is inversely correlated to neurological cognition and it may be a potential biomarker for the prediction of high altitude induced cognitive dysfunction.  相似文献

Lithic industries attest that Western Himalayas, Hindu Kush and Pamir as well as the sub-Himalayan belt that is the Siwalik range, were inhabited during the prehistoric times. However, in thin transition zone between plains and high mountains, distinction is to be kept between low-middle altitude regions and high altitude regions (above 2000 m). In the former regions, the first human occupation tenuously appears around 2 Ma. In the Middle Pleistocene, the Lower Palaeolithic industries belong to two technological facies, the Acheulian and the Early Soanian. In the North-Western Siwaliks, the Soanian occurs in plenty on the river terraces, which were all built after 0.4 Ma, and the Acheulian appears between 0.5 and 0.7 Ma. The Middle Palaeolithic is still rich in cobble tools and therefore named Late Soanian. The Upper Palaeolithic is missing, perhaps due to climatic factors and the Neolithic is characterised by polished axes/adzes, but actually many of the cobble tools usually considered as Early Soanian may well belong to the cobble tool technical tradition common in South-East Asia during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene. In the north of the mountain range, the entire Palaeolithic sequence yielded by the loess in Southern Tajikistan is characterised, right from the late Lower Pleistocene, by lithic industries mainly compose of flakes, sometimes with cobble tools. In the high altitude zones, prehistoric sites are unknown before the Holocene and therefore they are contemporaneous with the Neolithic but some technological facies display particular features. The question is to know whether the originality of the industries, observed at different periods of time, is linked to techno-cultural adaptations to particular environments or to the isolation of the mountain populations.  相似文献

Observations on granulocyte peroxidase of 123 teleosts are reported and correlated with previous studies to put occurrence of fish granulocyte peroxidase in a phylogenetic perspective. Eosinophil peroxidase occurs in archaic groups such as lungfish and sturgeons, but is usually weak and infrequently observed in chondrichthyans, and in teleosts occurs in some elopomorphs, is consistently observed in stomiiforms, is rarely observed and usually weak in acanthopterygians and absent from salmoniforms, scopelomorphs and paracanthopterygians. Peroxidase is absent from lungfish and sturgeon neutrophils, is present in neutrophils of some elopomorphs and clupeimorphs. both of which are basal teleost groups, but in salmoniforms and higher teleosts is consistently observed in neutrophils. although often weak in pleuronectiforms.
Loss of eosinophil peroxidase and development of neutrophil peroxidase in teleosts may be due to inefficient phagocytosis and loss of peroxidase with degranulation in eosinophils, being superseded by concentration of peroxidase in phagosomes in neutrophils.  相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that optimum birthweight for survival is lower among hospital-born infants in Puno, Peru (altitude 3860 m) than that among their counterparts at low altitude in Tacna, Peru (altitude 600 m). The data are derived from hospital birth records for 1971 and 1972 and municipal death records for 1971 through 1973. Linking these records permits analysis of the patterns of mortality in relation to birthweight. Stabilizing selection upon birthweight is operating in both populations. The high altitude population has a lower mean birthweight and a lower optimal birthweight. The Puno population is closer to its optimal birthweight distribution and, as a result of mortality during infancy, is approaching its optimum birthweight distribution for survival more rapidly than the Tacna population. It appears that the high altitude Puno population may well be adapted to its environment in the sense that there is less selective mortality on birthweight phenotypes.  相似文献

Organisms frequently need to adjust physiological mechanisms to successfully breed in novel habitats. To explore how some populations physiologically acclimate to novel environmental conditions while others do not, we examine three subspecies of the white-crowned sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys. Of these subspecies, Z. l. pugetensis has expanded its breeding range to high altitude over the last 60 years. We investigate physiological acclimation to high altitude conditions by comparing circulating levels of glucocorticoids among Z. l. gambelii, which only breeds at high altitude, Z. l. nuttalli, which only breeds at low altitude, a population of Z. l. pugetensis that breeds at low altitude, and a Z. l. pugetensis population that now breeds at high altitude. Glucocorticoids mediate physiological and behavioral responses to environmental conditions and are constitutively secreted, but can also be released facultatively. We hypothesized that elevation of the glucocorticoid corticosterone (CORT) may facilitate breeding in high altitude environments. We tested this hypothesis by comparing baseline and stress-induced CORT levels of subspecies breeding at low altitude, Z. l. pugetensis and Z. l. nuttalli, to subspecies breeding at high altitude, Z. l. pugetensis and Z. l. gambelii. We found that populations breeding at high altitude exhibit higher baseline and stress-induced levels of CORT. Additionally, we found that Z. l. pugetensis exhibit greater variation in the stress-induced CORT response. These results suggest an importance of modulation of hormonal mechanisms in facilitating breeding in high altitude environments, and that variation in these mechanisms may be associated with facilitating altitudinal range expansion.  相似文献

Environmental gradients are caused by gradual changes in abiotic factors, which affect species abundances and distributions, and are important for the spatial distribution of biodiversity. One prominent environmental gradient is the altitude gradient. Understanding ecological processes associated with altitude gradients may help us to understand the possible effects climate change could have on species communities. We quantified vegetation cover, species richness, species evenness, beta diversity, and spatial patterns of community structure of vascular plants along altitude gradients in a subarctic mountain tundra in northern Sweden. Vascular plant cover and plant species richness showed unimodal relationships with altitude. However, species evenness did not change with altitude, suggesting that no individual species became dominant when species richness declined. Beta diversity also showed a unimodal relationship with altitude, but only for an intermediate spatial scale of 1 km. A lack of relationships with altitude for either patch or landscape scales suggests that any altitude effects on plant spatial heterogeneity occurred on scales larger than individual patches but were not effective across the whole landscape. We observed both nested and modular patterns of community structures, but only the modular patterns corresponded with altitude. Our observations point to biotic regulations of plant communities at high altitudes, but we found both scale dependencies and inconsistent magnitude of the effects of altitude on different diversity components. We urge for further studies evaluating how different factors influence plant communities in high altitude and high latitude environments, as well as studies identifying scale and context dependencies in any such influences.  相似文献

The lowered partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude is one of the severest and most pervasive environmental stresses affecting human populations. Virtually all organ systems and physiological functions are affected by hypoxia, and only elaborate modern technology can temporarily ameliorate the hypoxic stress of altitude exposure. The biological and behavioral responses of newcomers, sojourners, and native residents at higher elevations could provide a paradigm of the study of man's adaptation to the physical environment. Cardiorespiratory characteristics are closely related to altitude exposure, and certain alterations in these characteristics constitute the principal adaptive responses of the organism to hypoxia. However, not all altitude-related characteristics are beneficial to the organism; some peculiar characteristics occurring at high altitude may be without benefits, or may even be pathological and maladaptive. The roles of age, sex, race, physical condition, nutrition, and intensity and frequency of exposure during growth and development of altitude-related characteristics are not entirely understood. Moreover the influence of even large circulatory and respiratory alterations, on tissue oxygen tension may be small, and their adaptive significance difficult to evaluate. An equivalent level of functional adaptation might be achieved through differing combinations of structural, functional, and behavioral characteristics. It is concluded that more rigorous evaluations of adaptation to the environment are needed.  相似文献
