1. The relationships between body length and dry weight were examined for eight species of freshwater planktonic crustacea common in Japan: Eodiaptomus japonicus, Acanthodiaptomus pacificus, Daphnia galeata, D. similis, D. magna, Scapholeberis mucronata, Simocephalus exspinosus and Bosmina longirostris.
2. The relationships of two diaptomid species were similar and the approximate equation was ln W = 2.7 + 2.6*ln L , where L is prosome length (mm) and W is dry weight (μg). The carapace length–dry weight relationships in branchiopods were more variable, with the slope ranging from 1.9 to 2.9 and the intercept from 2.0 to 3.7.
3. The effects of food conditions on the relationship were examined in the laboratory, and the seasonal changes in the field were also studied.
4. Practical advice is presented for predicting crustacean weight from body length.  相似文献

The relationship between the gill raker structure of planktivorous fish (number, distance between gill rakers and length) and selective feeding on different species and size classes of zooplankton was studied. Gill raker structure was measured for brown trout Salmo trutta , Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus , whitefish Coregonus lavaretus , roach Rutilus rutilus , bleak Alburnus alburnus , and three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus . All species are facultative planktivorous fish and occur commonly in Scandinavian lakes. The effect of gill raker structure was studied by comparing prey found in fish stomachs with the availability of zooplankton from several lakes. Gill raker length and distance were significantly correlated with fish length. Although gill raker structure differed among species, all fish species selected the larger zooplankters. The minimum size of cladoceran species found in fish stomachs was much smaller than the distance between gill rakers. Despite great differences in gill raker spacing, the minimum size ingested of Daphnia galeata and Bosmina longispina was similar for all predators. The hypothesis that small zooplankton are strained and retained by the gill rakers in particulate feeding planktivorous fish, particularly in salmonids and roach, is rejected.  相似文献

1. Introduced or invading predators may have strong impacts on prey populations of the recipient community mediated by direct and indirect interactions. The long-term progression of predation effects, covering the invasion and establishment phase of alien predators, however, has rarely been documented.
2. This paper documents the impact of an invasive, specialized planktivorous fish on its prey in a subarctic watercourse. Potential predation effects on the crustacean plankton, at the community, population and individual levels, were explored in a long-term study following the invasion by vendace ( Coregonus albula ).
3. Over the 12-year period, the density and species richness of zooplankton decreased, smaller species became more abundant and Daphnia longispina , one of the largest cladocerans, was eliminated from the zooplankton community.
4. Within the dominant cladocerans, including Daphnia spp., Bosmina longispina and Bosmina longirostris , the body size of ovigerous females and the size at first reproduction decreased after the arrival of the new predator. The clutch sizes of Daphnia spp. and B. longirostris also increased.
5. Increased predation pressure following the vendace invasion induced many effects on the crustacean zooplankton, and we document comprehensive and strong direct and indirect long-term impacts of an introduced non-native predator on the native prey community.  相似文献

Clutch size, cyclomorphosis and allometric growth were analysedin a population of the humpbacked Bosmina (E.) coregoni gibbera.This species shows cyclomorphosis in antennule length and bodyheight, traits that may reduce predation risk from Leptodorakindtii. Individuals with long antennule and extreme body heightmay pay a cost in terms of decreased reproductive capacity.On the other hand, increasing the body height may be a way toincrease the brood chamber volume during periods of good foodconditions. We tested these hypotheses by comparing the seasonalvariation in clutch size with the seasonal variation in morphology.Antennule length and body height increased from mid-May to Augustand showed usually positive allometry at times with high populationdensities of the predatory cladoceran Leptodora kindtii. Clutchsize decreased from spring to late summer contrary to the hypothesisthat cyclomorphosis in height is caused by a seasonal variationin reproductive demand. However, within-dates antennule lengthwas negatively related and body height was positively relatedto clutch size. We conclude that the long antennule may imposea cost that reduces the reproductive capacity. The hypothesisthat carapace cyclomorphosis is driven by seasonally varyingclutch sizes was rejected.  相似文献

The induction of two cyclomorphic traits, antennule length andcarapace height, in Eubosmina coregoni gibbera by the cladoceranpredator Leptodora kindtii was investigated in an experimentalstudy. It was found that both carapace height and antennulelength were significantly larger when the predator cues werepresent. However, antennule length only differed in adults,while juveniles showed no difference in antennule length betweenthe treatments. Our results indicate that morphological anti-predatortraits can reduce the vulnerability of adults, whereas the smallsize of juveniles may prevent the anti-predator traits frombeing effective.  相似文献

Subfossil Bosmina (Eubosmina) remains were analysed in a sediment core from the Untersee of Lake Constance which covered the Late-Glacial/Holocene period.During the Late-Glacial and the early Holocene the lake was inhabited only by Bosmina longispina Leydig. In the Late Holocene a second species, Bosmina coregoni f. kessleri Uljanin, appeared. In the uppermost sediment layers the morphological gap between the two taxa disappeared, apparently from introgressive hybridization.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The effects of temperature on development and growth are described for the common Cladocera and Copepoda in Tjeukemeer. Eight cladoceran species and five copepod species have been investigated: Daphnia hyalina, Daphnia cucullata, Bosmina coregoni, Bosmina longirostris, Chydorus sphaericus, Ceriodaphnia pulchella, Diaphanosoma brachyurum, Leptodora kindtii, Acanthocyclops robustus, Mesocydops leuckarti, Diacyclops bicuspidatus, Cyclops vicinus vicinus and Eurytemora affinis . Growth is expressed as length increment per size class (cladocerans) or instar (copepods) per week and as the relationship between time and length. The curvilinear logarithmic equation: In D = In a + b (In T)2 is fitted to the development times of eggs, combined naupliar instars and combined copepodite instars, as well as to the longevity of the adults. 三峡水库蓄水前后,作者从2002年6月至2004年7月按月在坝前段(茅坪—归州)采集枝角类,研究蓄水前后枝角类的变化,结果显示蓄水前该江段水流急不适合枝角类栖息,仅在水流相对较缓的岸边采集到2种;蓄水后水环境较适宜枝角类生活,周年内共采集到20种,并存在着明显的季节变化和水平分布上的差异,文中对其原因进行了分析讨论。    相似文献

Vendace (Coregonus albula, L.) is in the southern part of its distribution area during the summer period restricted to hypolimnion. Food is dominated by Bosmina coregoni and Daphnia sp. The selectivity index is highest for large cladocerans and large copepods.The pelagic crustacean fauna in vendace lakes is dominated by small species like Bosmina coregoni, Daphnia cristata, Thermocyclops and Mesocyclops sp. and Eudiaptomus sp. During periods of maximum vendace abundance only Bosmina coregoni is left of the cladocerans, while the abundance of cyclopoid copepods increases.  相似文献

Like Bythotrephes, Bosmina (Eubosmina) coregoni coregoni Baird appears to have invaded North America from Eurasia, since there are no records from before 1965. All previously known North American populations have a well-rounded ventrocaudal corner of the carapace, suggesting that the founding race is one of the rotunda type, the most common eubosminid in European lakes. In Lake Muskoka, immediately to the east of Georgian Bay, Ontario, eubosminids were found that shared features of B. (E.) longicornis kessleri Ulianine. In contrast to other North America populations of B.(E. )c. coregoni, these specimens have a short, broadly based mucro. Morphological features suggest that these are interspecific F1-hybrids between B. (E.) longispina Leydig and B. If a pelagic ecosystem is invaded by an efficient planktivorous fish, competition theory predicts that habitat and/or diet segregation should occur if the invader and native planktivores are to co-exist. We compared the diet and pelagic habitat use between invading vendace (Coregonus albula) and two native morphs of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) in three subarctic lakes located within the same watercourse. No clear vertical habitat segregation was found as vendace prevailed throughout the entire depth range. Zooplankton generally dominated the diet of all three coregonids. No obvious resource partitioning was found in two of the lakes, while in the third lake the diets of whitefish and vendace differed significantly from each other. Here, the predominant pelagic whitefish morph fed extensively on water mites whereas vendace mainly consumed surface insects and to some extent small fish, apparently as a result of highly depleted zooplankton resources. The results suggest that various levels of resource depletion following the vendace invasion caused the observed differences between the lakes, indicating that different levels of resource partitioning were associated with dissimilar competition intensities. At present, coexistence of these congeneric species seems to be possible, although the vendace invasion has apparently resulted in a challenging and unstable situation for the planktivorous whitefish.  相似文献

Habitat use of three sympatric whitefish Coregonus lavaretus forms was determined using hydroacoustics, pelagic trawling and epibenthic gillnetting in the subarctic Lake Muddusjärvi during the day and night in June, August and September. Whitefish constituted 97% of the numerical catches and whitefish with high number of gill rakers (DR) were the most abundant whitefish form. Forms with low numbers of gill rakers used only epibenthic habitats during both the day and night in all study periods: large whitefish with low numbers of gill rakers (LSR) dwelled mainly at depths 0–10 m, whereas small whitefish with low numbers of gill rakers (SSR) used deeper (>10 m) habitats. LSR and SSR whitefish consumed mainly benthic macroinvertebrates during all study occasions. The planktivorous DR whitefish used both epibenthic and pelagic habitats, but vertical habitat selection varied both over time of day and season. In June, when light intensity was continuously high, DR whitefish did not perform diel vertical migrations. In August and September, when dark nights were distinguishable, DR whitefish ascended from the bottom to the pelagic at dusk to feed on zooplankton, and descended at dawn. DR whitefish used pelagic habitats only at the lowest light intensities during the night, which was probably related to the high predation risk from brown trout Salmo trutta .  相似文献

Mysid shrimps are an important trophic link in the food web of the Baltic Sea. In 2002 and 2003 we investigated species composition, distribution, life cycle and prey in the Bornholm Basin (central Baltic). Three species and one genus were identified: Mysis mixta, Neomysis integer, Mesopodopsis slabberi and Praunus sp. The dominant M. mixta and N. integer occurred in the whole study area but were more abundant in the peripheral, more shallow regions. Size frequency distribution indicated one generation for M. mixta and probably two for N. integer. Main prey of all size classes in both species was the cladoceran Bosmina coregoni maritima during summer and autumn. In spring and winter also copepods of the species Temora longicornis and Pseudocalanus acuspes were important prey items. Detritus and phytoplankton cells were of minor importance and many individuals had empty guts. Mysid shrimps in the deep basin might be advected from more shallow areas, as the abundance of all species was much lower than in coastal regions. The deep Bornholm Basin does not seem to be a favourable habitat, probably due to the inaccessibility of the oxygen deficient bottom layer. Under current hydrographic conditions mysids are probably not important predators of zooplankton and thus not competitors of planktivorous fish in the Bornholm Basin.  相似文献

The feeding impact of planktivorous fish on microbial organisms is still poorly understood. We followed the seasonal dynamics of the food web in two natural fishponds for two years: one was stocked with planktivorous whitefish while the other had no planktivorous fish. The aim of the study was the simultaneous assessment of the feeding behaviours of planktivorous fish and of bacterivorous meta-/protozooplankters. We hypothesized that in the presence of planktivorous fish there would be fewer metazooplankton, more protozoans and decreased numbers of bacteria. Our results showed that the amount of metazooplankton eaten by the fish was indeed negatively correlated with metazooplankton biomass. The feeding impact of planktivorous fish in shaping the microbial loop was remarkable. The main grazers of bacteria in the fishpond were ciliates, whereas in the pond without fish these were heterotrophic nanoflagellates. In the fishless pond the role of the top predator shifted to the predaceous metazooplankter Leptodora kindtii which controlled the abundance of herbivorous metazooplankters. We found a negative relationship between the number of bacteria and flagellates in the fishless pond, while the number of bacterivorous ciliates was suppressed by predaceous ciliates. Therefore the bacteria-grazing activity was higher in the absence of planktivorous fish.  相似文献

3. Diaphanosoma brachyurum (Liévin). Daphnia cucullata Sars. and Daphnia galeata Sars grazed free bacteria more quickly than aggregates, but Endiaptomus gracilis (Sars), Chydorus sphaericus Müll. and Bosmi- na coregoni s.l. Baird grazed the aggregates more readily.

Seasonal changes in development and reproduction of three species of Cladocera, Bosmina longirostris, Bosmina coregoni and Diaphanosoma brachyurum, were studied in regard to impact of vertebrate (planktivorous fish) and invertebrate (cladoceran Leptodora kindtii and cyclopoid copepods Mesocyclops leuckarti and Thermocyclops oithonoides) predators. Each of the cladocerans represented a different prey type. The population of the largest body-sized D. brachyurum was not affected by predators suggesting unidentified mechanisms of predation-avoidance. Diaphanosoma displayed low reproductive output coinciding with high density. Medium-sized B. coregoni, influenced by planktivorous fish, invested in reproduction and carried large egg-clutches resulting in gradual increase in population density. The population of small body-sized B. longirostris, that was influenced by invertebrate predators, displayed high density and reproductive effort in spring, followed by extreme collapse in abundance and reproduction during summer months. The results suggest that invertebrate predators may suppress populations of some Cladocera more strongly than planktivorous fish.  相似文献

Synopsis This study compares simple fish communities of ten oligotrophic lakes in south-central Ontario. Species densities and population size structure vary significantly among these lake communities depending on fish species present beyond the littoral zone. Lake whitefish are fewer and larger in the presence of lake herring than in their absence. Diet analysis indicates that lake whitefish shift from feeding on both plankton and benthic prey when lake herring are absent to a primarily benthic feeding niche in the presence of lake herring. When benthic round whitefish are present, lake whitefish size and density decline and they move lower in the lake compared to round whitefish. Burbot are also fewer and larger in lakes with lake herring than in lakes without herring. Burbot, in turn, appear to influence the population structure of benthic coregonine species. Lower densities of benthic lake whitefish and round whitefish are found in lakes containing large benthic burbot than in lakes with either small burbot or where burbot are absent. Predation on the pelagic larvae of burbot and lake whitefish by planktivorous lake herring alters the size and age structure of these populations. As life history theory predicts, those species with poor larval survival appear to adopt a bet-hedging life history strategy of long-lived individuals as a reproductive reserve.  相似文献

A population of cyclomorphic Bosmina coregoni was studied in Lake Östersjön, southwestern Sweden and results from field samples collected in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 are presented. Animals collected in summer have remarkably higher carapace and prolonged antennule compared to what we call the normal morph. In 1991 the extreme morph reach its maximum body length, body height and antennule length in July to September. The occurrence of the extreme morph coincide with the hatching of the predaceous cladoceran Leptodora kindtii.The two morphs fluctuate in abundance and in relation to each other. In early spring only the normal morph occurred in the samples followed by a period of about two months when the two morphs were found together, in July only the extreme morph was found. In September the two morphs were again present in the lake. As has been shown for other cladoceran, the conspicuous carapace and antennule could be an adaptive response that decreases mortality due to invertebrate predation. Spectacular features like these are likely also accompanied by some sort of costs.  相似文献

Negative correlations between clutch size and population density are proposed to be considered as indices of intra- and interspecific competition in cladocerans if they are revealed while analyzing population dynamics and clutch size and time lags are taken into account. The proper correlation analysis of summer populations of Diaphanosoma brachyurum, Bosmina coregoni, Daphnia cucullata and D. galeata from mesotrophic Lake Glubokoye (Moscow Region) in 1975, 1978, and 1979 indicates the important role of competition of both types for the community studied. High niche overlap in food and space in the four populations was also observed.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The potential tor competition in the zooplankton of small Araucana Lake (Andes, Argentina) was tested experimentally.
2. Laboratory enrichment of lake water with nutrients resulted in an increased abundance of nannoplankton with the cyanobacteria Gloeocapsa minor predominating.
3. The dominant species of zooplankton showed contrasting responses to enrichment: the abundance of Bosmina longirostris increased, whereas that of Ceriodaphnia dubia decreased relative to the corresponding controls.
4. The clearance rates for various nannoplankton by these cladocerans were similar, resulting in high niche overlap as estimated by the Pianka index.
5. Life table experiments showed that when fed on a pure suspension of lake flagellates (103 cells ml−1) Ceriodaphnia had a significantly higher average intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r ) than on a suspension of Gloeocapsa (0.28 v . 0.146); in the case of Bosmina no significant differences for the two foods were found (0.182 and 0.141, respectively).
6. The contrasting responses of the animals to enrichment are explained by the differing suitability of particular nannoplankton species as food for different cladoceran species. The seasonal succession in the species composition and food quality of nannoplankton may be important for the coexistence of competing zooplankters in lakes.  相似文献
