Along the Sopoti section of Mali Gjere mountain are found two distinct mid-Cretaceous marly-shaly-siliceous intervals that occur near the top of the Vigla Limestone Formation (Aptian-Albian) of the Ionian zone in southern Albania. The lower interval is relatively rich in carbonate content (36% CaCO3 on average) and radiolaria (10% on average). It contains black shale levels rich in organic matter (up to 8.5% total organic carbon (TOC)) of marine origin, which did not experience any strong thermal maturation as suggested by their very low Tmax values. The age of the lower interval is latest Barremian to Early Aptian based on its calcareous nannofossil and radiolarian assemblages. It is therefore regarded as the equivalent of the Fourcade Level of Greece, reflecting the Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE1a). The upper interval is richer in both carbonate content (60% CaCO3 on average) and radiolaria (20% on average) but it is practically devoid of any preserved organic matter. Its age straddles the Aptian-Albian boundary based on integrated biochronologic data of dinoflagellates, calcareous nannofossils and radiolaria. It is tentatively considered as the sedimentary expression of OAE1b (sensu Leckie et al., 2002) in the Ionian zone of Albania. The presence of large Assipetra nannoliths in both shaly-siliceous intervals and the relative abundance of radiolaria suggest that their accumulation took place during periods of higher productivity in the Ionian zone of Albania.  相似文献

During the Early Aptian, major palaeoenvironmental changes occurred leading to an oceanic anoxic event (OAE 1a) and a perturbation of the global carbon cycle. New detailed litho-, bio-, and chemostratigraphic (TOC, δ13Ccarb, δ13Corg) records of two superbly exposed and expanded Lower Aptian sections in Cantabria (La Florida and Cuchía) allow to recognize the expression of the OAE 1a in shallow shelf environments of northern Spain. The succession consists of shallow platform limestones that include a marly unit (Patrocinio Formation), the deposition of which occurred mostly at the onset of the OAE 1a (~ 120.5 Ma). This study presents a new integrated biostratigraphy based on ammonites, planktonic foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils and palynomorphs that allows an accurate age resolution of the succession. The marly unit records an abrupt negative δ13C excursion in both bulk organic matter (up to 5‰) and carbonate (up to 6‰, mean 3‰), as has been already observed at the onset of the OAE 1a in other Lower Aptian deposits worldwide. In detail, however, the negative excursion presents two minima in the studied sections. This negative spike is confidently attributed to the upper half of the Hayesites irregularis nannofossil Zone, to the upper part of the Blowiella blowi foraminiferal Zone, and to the middle–upper part of the Deshayesites weissi ammonite Zone. A third negative excursion occurs at the base of the Rhagodiscus angustus nannofossil Zone, which may be correlatable with the Dufrenoyia furcata ammonite Zone. This data set refines the age of the OAE 1a and reveals the existence of a stratigraphic gap in the westernmost margin of the Basque Cantabrian Basin that covers at least a portion of the upper part of the Early Aptian. Sedimentary facies and quantitative analysis of palynomorphs and nannofossils document significant environmental changes associated with the OAE 1a: compositional changes of neritic carbonates and calcareous nannofossils data indicate the occurrence of a biocalcification crisis inferred to have been related to CO2-induced changes in seawater chemistry, and palynomorphs identify a thermal maximum followed by a cooling phase. The latter show a Classopollis maximum during the OAE 1a, which is followed by a decrease in Classopollis and an increase of bisaccate pollen after the event.  相似文献

The Ouarsenis Massif belongs to the Algerian Tell domain which is considered as the eastern part of the Maghrebian Tethys former margin. The Cenomanian-Turonian Douar Menkouchi section outcropping in the eastern side of the Ouarsenis massif is composed of marls and laminated limestone alternations, including massive limestone and a biosiliceous bed toward the upper part of the succession. It reveals the presence of well-preserved and diversified radiolarians. In this study, we have identified for the first time in the Algerian domain, age-diagnostic radiolarian assemblages characterizing the Cenomanian-Turonian transition (C/T). The organic-rich laminated beds (black shales) confined to Silvae Zone, Cenomanian in age and underlying a biosiliceous interval, have provided radiolarian assemblages dominated by Pseudodictyomitrae. The successions overlying the biosiliceous interval have provided diversified radiolarian assemblages including Hagiastridae (i,e. Crucella cachensis, Alievium cf. superbum) and abundant Dictymitrae taxa (i,e. Dictyomitra cf. napaensis and Dictyomitra undata) indicating early Turonian age. These marl-limestone alternations are assigned to the Alievium superbum Zone. Considering taphonomic and diagenetic implications on assemblages content, we conclude that organic-rich beds and biosiliceous interval outline the latest Cenomanian. The radiolarian assemblage composition exhibits similarities to microfauna recovered from Bonarelli Horizon in Central Italy. Morphological similarities are also deduced from assemblages containing Pseudodictyomitrae tiara morphotypes (synonym of Pnakasekoi) which resemble those recovered from ophiolitic intervals in Cyprus and Oman areas.  相似文献

The Upper Cretaceous succession in the Madenli area (western Central Taurides, Southern Turkey) consists of platform carbonate rocks deposited in entirely peritidal environments, which are sensitive to sea level changes driven by global eustasy, but also strongly affected by local and regional tectonics. It includes economically important bauxite deposits. Previous works suggest different ages for bauxite formation ranging from the Albian to the Santonian. Benthic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and facies analysis of the Madenli and Doğankuzu outcrop sections allow for a more precise dating of the platform emersion periods. The footwall limestones of the bauxite deposits consist of well-bedded limestones (Unit-1), which contain a benthic foraminiferal assemblage (BFA) including mainly Biconcava bentori and Pastrikella biplana, Chrysalidina gradata (BFA I), assigned to the middle-upper Cenomanian. In the Madenli section, the first bauxite deposit occurs in the upper part of Unit-1 as a layer interbedded with pinkish sparitic and dolomitic beds (subunit-1a) deposited in supratidal environment. Subunit-1a is stratigraphically equivalent to the Doğankuzu and Mortaş bauxite deposits considered as karst-related, unconformity-type deposits. The hanging-wall limestones of the bauxite are represented by the massive limestones (Unit-2) starting locally with either the upper Cenomanian characterized mainly by the presence of Pseudolituonella reicheli or upper Campanian comprising mainly Murciella cuvillieri and Moncharmontia apenninica (BFA II). There is no field evidence of a discontinuity surface at the contact between the lower part of Unit-2, including BFA I, and the upper part of Unit-2, including BFA II. This contact is defined as a paraconformity indicating a stratigraphic gap from the Turonian to the early Campanian. The top of Unit-2 is truncated by another discontinuity surface associated with a minor bauxite deposit. The overlying Unit-3 is characterized by well-bedded, rudist-bearing limestones topped by laminated and dolomitized limestones organized in shallowing upward cycles. It is assigned to the upper Maastrichtian based on the presence of Rhapydionina liburnica (BFA III) and rudist assemblage. A third emersion period of the platform corresponds to the early Maastrichtian.  相似文献

The present article is a taxonomic study of all spongy spumellarian radiolarian taxa with three and four coplanar spines or spongy arms occurring in the middle Carnian from the Köseyahya section, near the town of Elbistan, SE Turkey. This fauna is characteristic of the Tetraporobrachia haeckeli radiolarian Zone, and comes from an 8 m thick succession of clayey-cherty limestones occurring at the lower part of the section. In addition, a few species from the Middle and Upper Triassic from other areas have been also included in this study to improve some generic diagnoses, and to better comprehend the diversity and evolutionary trends of some genera, subfamilies and families. The taxonomy at the generic and suprageneric levels is based primarily on the types of microsphere. This new approach allowed new taxonomic arrangements of genera and suprageneric units, and suggested new phylogenetic relationships among these radiolarians and between them and younger radiolarians. The authors discuss and describe 69 species, of which 37 are new, and 14 genera, of which three are new (Paraparonaella, Pseudangulobracchia, and Ropanaella). The genus Triassoastrum and others are reinterpreted. All genera studied are assigned to five subfamilies, of which two are new (Tetrapaurinellinae and Triassocrucellinae), and two families (Tritrabidae and Veghicycliidae). Nine species in open nomenclature are also illustrated.  相似文献

This article is a taxonomic study of the radiolarian species of the superfamilies Eptingiacea and Saturnaliacea occurring in the middle Carnian fauna from the Köseyahya section, near the town of Elbistan, southeastern Turkey. This fauna is characteristic of the Tetraporobrachia haeckeli Radiolarian Zone as defined in Austria and later found also in Turkey and Oman. It comes from an 8 m thick succession of clayey/cherty limestones from the lower part of the section. In addition, a few species from the late Ladinian and Carnian from Oman and the early Norian from Alaska have also been included in this study, in order to improve some generic diagnoses and to show the diversity and evolutionary trends of some genera. 32 radiolarian species of which 22 are new are described and illustrated, and assigned to 16 genera of which three are new (Capnuchospyris, Veleptingium, and Triassolaguncula). The diagnoses of some species, genera, subfamilies and families have been revised, and the family Eptingiidae has been raised to the rank of superfamily.  相似文献

The scarcity of records of Early Paleocene radiolarians has meant that while radiolarian biostratigraphy is firmly established as an important tool for correlation, there has been a long-standing gap between established zonations for the Cretaceous and from latest Paleocene to Recent. It has also led to considerable speculation over the level of faunal change across the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary. Consequently, the discovery of rich and diverse radiolarian assemblages in well-delineated K/T boundary sections within siliceous limestones of the Amuri Limestone Group in eastern Marlborough, New Zealand, is of great significance for biostratigraphy and K/T boundary research. This initial report is restricted to introducing a new latest Cretaceous to mid Late Paleocene zonation based on the radiolarian succession at four of these sections and a re-examination of faunas from coeval sediments at DSDP Site 208 (Lord Howe Rise). Three new Paleocene species are described:Amphisphaera aotea, Amphisphaera kina andStichomitra wero. Six new interval zones are defined by the first appearances of the nominate species. In ascending order these are:Lithomelissa? hoplites Foreman (Zone RK9, Cretaceous),Amphisphaera aotea n. sp. (Zone RP1, Paleocene),Amphisphaera kina n. sp. (RP2),Stichomitra granulata Petrushevskaya (RP3),Buryella foremanae Petrushevskaya (RP4) andBuryella tetradica (RP5). Good age control from foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils permits close correlation with established microfossil zonations. Where age control is less reliable, radiolarian events are used to substantially improve correlation between the sections. No evidence is found for mass extinction of radiolarians at the end of the Cretaceous. However, the K/T boundary does mark a change from nassellarian to spumellarian dominance, due to a sudden influx of actinommids, which effectively reduces the relative abundance of many Cretaceous survivors. An accompanying influx of diatoms in the basal Paleocene of Marlborough, together with evidence for an increase of total radiolarian abundance, suggests siliceous plankton productivity increased across the K/T boundary. Possible causes for this apparently localised phenomenon are briefly discussed.  相似文献

From siliceous shales (Lower Carboniferous, Rheinisches Schiefergebirge), in direct neighborhood to a bed of allodapic limestone, the following fluontized radiolarian fauna has been extracted by chemical transformation of originally calcified skeletons:Albaillella cartalla, Latentifistula turgida, Eostylodktya cf. eccentrica, Tetragregnon sycamorensis sycamorensis, Belowea variabilis, Callela? hexactinia, Entactinia tortispina and Entactinia variospina. The limestone bed has been dated by calcareous foraminifera as being mid Visean in age (V 2b-3a, Cf 5-foraminiferal zone). The diagenetic calcification took place after the selective dissolution of the skeletons and was in itself not selective.  相似文献

This new approach allowed new taxonomic arrangements of genera and suprageneric units, and suggested new and unexpected phylogenetic relationships among these radiolarians and between them and younger radiolarians. The authors discuss and describe 42 species, of which 36 are new, and 12 genera of which three are new (Charlottalum, Pentaspongodisculus, and Trimiducaella). The genera Pseudohagiastrum Pessagno, Natraglia Pessagno, Cantalum Pessagno and others are reinterpreted. All the genera studied, except Charlottalum, are assigned to three subfamilies, of which two (Pseudohagiastrinae and Trimiducinae) are new, and to two families (Angulobracchiidae and Relindellidae). The genus Charlottalum is described to replace the genus Cantalum, which has been erroneously used until present for Late Triassic pantanelliids with four tetrahedrally disposed three-bladed spines.  相似文献

The Middle Jurassic of the Intermediate Domain, in the northern Subbetic (External zones of the Betic Cordillera, SE, Spain), reveals the transition from hemipelagic limestones (Baños Formation) to overlying shallow-water oolitic limestones (Jabalcuz Formation). Near La Guardia (Jaén), the basal part of the succession that records this transition comprises clast-supported calcareous breccias 24 m thick. Transverse sections reveal a fan shape close to a normal fault. The upper parts of some breccia beds were colonized by bivalve patches that locally evolve to bivalve-serpulid bioherms. The bioherms are massive, with low relief and a metre-scale lenticular shape. Two main parts have been differentiated: a bivalve bioherm and a serpulid bioherm. The bivalve bioherm consists of densely packed mytiloids in life position with secondary serpulids, where the matrix is a grainstone of bioclasts, peloids, and ooids. Laterally, there are accumulations of reworked bivalves. The serpulid bioherm is made up of serpulid aggregates in a bioclast wackestone. On an unstable slope with abundant breccias, bioherm development took place in favourable periods of low sedimentation rate. The pioneer colonisers of the sea-bottom were mytiloid bivalves in relatively high-energy waters. Shell comissures were aligned parallel to the dip of the slope as an adaptation to feeding from the plankton and seston inputs associated with palaeocurrents. The intercalation of reworked bivalve beds likely indicates brief periods of higher-energy storm events. The serpulid bloom in the upper part of the buildups was probably related to a stage of low-energy conditions (as evidenced by the delicacy of these structures), which is congruent with the wackestone texture. The relief provided by the bivalves favoured the development of the serpulid bioherm phase in an elevated and advantageous position for suspension-feeding. The dense packing in these bioherms offered clear advantages in this unstable palaeoenvironment: (1) dense populations are less susceptible than isolated individuals to overgrowth by other sessile organisms or predator attacks; and (2) the interconnection among individuals enhances stability and resistance against high-energy events, and increases the growth potential of future generations. The interruption of bioherm growth was probably related to the deposition of new breccia beds and reworked oolitic limestones.  相似文献

Summary An extensive carbonate platform of predominately Middle Miocene age (Marmarica Formation) occupies the larger part of the northern plateau of the Western Desert of Egypt. The Marmarica Formation (up to 150m thick) exposed on the cliffs facing the Mediterranean coast consists mainly of alternating limestones and dolostones. Deposition took place in a shallow and normal marine environment. The limestones are dominated by algal boundstone, crossbedded packstone and bioturbated wackestone facies. The occurrence of the crossbedded packstone facies throughout the Marmarica Formation indicates that a shallow marine environment prevailed. Lithification of the precursor carbonates took place mainly in a meteoric environment. Replacement dolomitization ranged from fabric destructive to retentative and from fabric selective to pervasive. The presence of an abundant open marine fauna, the lack of evaporites, coupled with the contents of Sr and Na suggests that dolomitization took place in solutions more dilute than normal sea water. The limestone and dolostone facies cannot be separated into distinct types based on their major or trace element chemistry. Only Mn and Sr seem to be facially controlled. Both elements are particularly enriched in the lagoonal facies compared with the organic buildup facies. The difference in the Mn content is attributed to their proximity to continental areas at the time of deposition. The differences in Sr values are interpreted by an originally differing mineralogy (calcite versus aragonite) and different rates of diagenesis. Dolomitization did not appear to influence the Mn content as substantially as the Sr content. The amount of the acid insoluble residue is controlled by the distribution of Si, Ti, Al, Fe, k, Rb and Zr.  相似文献

The first radiolarians discovered in the Ordovician of the Argentinian Precordillera are reported. The material is associated with conodonts indicating the upper part of the Lenodus variabilis Biozone (Lower Darriwilian, Da1-2). The low diversity radiolarian fauna shows similarities with Middle Ordovician radiolarians from the Akzhal Mountains of Kazakhstan. However, a close comparison is difficult due to the poor preservation of the material, in which internal structures of the radiolarian tests are not preserved.  相似文献

The melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett), and the pumpkin fly, Bactrocera tau (Walker), are economically important pests that attack mainly cucurbitacean fruits. The two fruit fly species have similar natural distributions, host ranges, and population growth capacities. This study was designed to assess the asymmetrical competitions through resource exploitation between the larvae of B. cucurbitae and B. tau at different density levels and temperatures, and on different hosts by comparing the relative effects of interspecific and intraspecific interactions on four life history parameters: survival rate, puparial mass, puparial duration, and developmental duration. Our results showed that intraspecific and interspecific competitions occurred under some laboratory conditions, and B. cucurbitae took advantage over B. tau at the high-density level and at low and high temperatures on pumpkin, bitter gourd, and bottle gourd when interspecific competition took place. Intraspecific and interspecific competitions mainly affected the puparial mass and the survival rate of the two fruit fly species but had no marked effect on the puparial duration or development duration.  相似文献

A poorly preserved, but diversified radiolarian fauna was recovered from thin-bedded cherts occurring in the southeast of Daofu, Sichuan Province, southwestern China. Twenty-two radiolarian species belonging to 10 genera are identified and three new species (Paroertlispongus daofuensis n. sp., Falcispongus heinzi n. sp., Falcispongus pauliani n. sp.) are described. Falcispongus heinzi represents a transitional species between genera Oertlispongus inaequispinosus Dumitrica, Kozur and Mostler and Falcispongus Dumitrica. The fauna is divided into two assemblages, namely Muelleritortis cochleata and Oertlispongus inaequispinosus assemblages, which can be well correlated with the Ladinian radiolarian zones from Europe. The fauna indicates that basaltic rocks occurring in the Xianshuihe Belt were formed mainly during the Middle Triassic. Our results thus extend the previously known geological age of the Xianshuihe Belt to the Middle and Late Triassic interval.  相似文献

In order to elucidate early Aptian marine paleotemperature evolution across the period of enhanced organic carbon (Corg)-burial [Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a], stable isotope analyses were performed on pelagic limestones at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 463, central Pacific Ocean. The δ18O data exhibit a distinct anomaly by ~ − 2‰ spanning the OAE 1a interval (i.e., a ~ 6 m-thick, phytoplanktonic Corg-rich unit constrained by magneto-, bio- and δ13C stratigraphy). Elucidation of paleotemperature significance of the δ18O shift is made by taking account of recent Sr/Ca evidence at the same section, which revealed that geochemical signals in carbonate-poor lithologies are relatively unaltered against burial diagenesis. By discriminating δ18O values from carbonate-poor samples (CaCO3 contents = 5–30 wt.%), it appears that an abrupt rise in sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) by 8 °C (= − 1.7‰ shift in δ18O) occurred immediately before OAE 1a, whereas a cooling mode likely prevailed during the peak Corg-burial. In terms of its stratigraphic relationship as to the Corg-rich interval and to a pronounced negative δ13C excursion, as well as its timescale, the observed SST rise resembles those associated with the Paleocene–Eocene thermal maximum and, more strikingly, Jurassic Toarcian OAE. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that these paleoenvironmental events were driven by a common causal mechanism, which was likely initiated by the greenhouse effect via massive release of CH4 or CO2 from the isotopically-light carbon reservoir and terminated by a negative productivity feedback.  相似文献

Distributions of taxa across time and space are central to understanding biodiversity and biotic change, yet currently available occurrence data, drawn from biodiversity specimen records and observational datasets, are often insufficient to answer many driving questions. Records of “associated taxa,” taxa co-occurring with a specimen at the time and place of collection, have the potential to fill data gaps and expand the spatiotemporal scope of current occurrence records. I developed a method to extract associated taxon records from 84,328 digitized specimen records and examined the potential of these data to improve the quantity and quality of existing species occurrence data. Adding associated taxon records increased the size of the test dataset by 18.5%, spanned multiple decades (1937–2016), and potentially extended the known range of 217 taxa in Florida and up to 1500 taxa in the United States, demonstrating the capacity of these records to deepen our understanding of changes in the distributions of taxa on Earth. These results suggest that increased attention to documenting associated taxa could be a promising way to maximize the impact of every collecting event.  相似文献

In the “Eastern Pontides” (NE Turkey), the intense volcanic activity accompanying carbonate-siliceous sedimentation during the Late Cretaceous period ensured the occurrence of thick volcano-sedimentary sequences. Seventy-one radiolarian species belonging to 26 genera were identified from five stratigraphic sections of the Upper Cretaceous sequences between Trabzon and Giresun areas in NE Turkey. These species were obtained from the lower Turonian–lower Coniacian strata of the Çe?meler Formation, the Coniacian–lower Santonian strata of the Elmal? Dere Formation and the upper Santonian strata of the Ça?layan Formation. Coniacian–Campanian fauna, consisting of planktonic foraminifera Hedbergella, Marginotruncana, Globotruncana, Whiteinella and biserial heterohelicids as well as radiolarians, was recovered from the red pelagic limestones of the Elmal? Dere Formation known as marker horizon.  相似文献

The greatest mass extinction occurred at the end of the Permian. Most records of the mass extinction are not from pelagic sediments, but from shallow-marine and terrestrial sediments. Although several pelagic sections that span the end-Permian mass extinction have been found, these sections contain few index fossils and are often discontinuous because of small faults. We found the index fossils Albaillella cf. triangularis (Radiolaria) in siliceous claystone beds, Hindeodus parvus (Conodont) in the overlying black claystone beds, and Neospathodus cf. cristagalli and Ns. waageni (Conodont) in the subsequent siliceous claystone beds in Akkamori section-2 in northern Japan. These fossils suggest that this section ranges from the late Permian to the Early Triassic, including the early Induan and Olenekian stages. Furthermore, the lithological changes in the section, i.e., starting from bedded chert through siliceous claystone and black claystone to siliceous claystone, are concordant with those of well-known Permian–Triassic pelagic sequences in Japan. There is no gap between each lithofacie of the Akkamori section-2. Critical lithological continuity between Upper Permian siliceous claystone beds and uppermost Permian to lowermost Triassic black claystone beds of the Akkamori section-2 was recognized by observing hand-polished specimens and thin sections. Such paleontological and sedimentological evidence implies that the Akkamori section-2 is a continuous pelagic section that records the end-Permian mass extinction event. The carbonaceous black claystone beds have high total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations (1.06–3.31 wt.%), suggesting oceanic anoxia at least deep and probably stable primary productivity. A decrease in radiolarian abundance from 26–563 to 0.27–20 specimens/cm2 coincided with an increase in TOC content from 0.01–0.16 to 1.06–3.31 wt.% at the boundary of the siliceous claystone and the overlying black claystone beds near the top of the Permian, implying that radiolarian extinction occurred at the end of the Permian coinciding with oceanic anoxia. Although TOC contents decreased in the early Olenekian (Smithian), radiolarian abundance did not increase at that time, indicating that radiolarian recovery was delayed by > 1.5 m.y.  相似文献

Two significant stratigraphical microfossils, conodonts and radiolarians, are usually used for the Upper Triassic chronostratigraphy. The Baoshan Block was located in eastern Tethys during the Late Triassic where the biostratigraphical data of Upper Triassic are still poorly known. We collected new samples from the Hongyan section (HY) for biostratigraphical study. This 24-m-thick section in Dabaozi Village, Baoshan City, is mainly composed of thin-layered limestones, sandstone and siltstone. The conodont fauna is referred to Sevatian 1 (late Norian), in which the species Mockina englandi, Mockina carinata and Mockina mosheri morphotype B are first recognized in the Baoshan Block, and thus eastern Tethys. The Norian radiolarian associations are first reported in the Baoshan Block, which correlate with the biozonation of North America and also that proposed for Central Japan. The radiolarian assemblages found in the analysed samples in HY section can be referred to the Sevatian Betraccium deweveri Zone. The Baoshan Block is a key area for conodont and radiolarian-based correlations between the Tethys, Japan and North American domains.  相似文献
