The role of the cortico-tectal pathways in the processing of auditory signals was investigated by recording the click-evoked responses and extracellular multiple unit activity in the inferior colliculus (IC) after functional ablation of the auditory cortex (AC) by local intracortical application of a sodium channel blocker, tetrodotoxin (TTX). Click-evoked IC responses (IC-ER) and multiple unit activity in response to tone bursts were recorded with implanted electrodes in the IC of rats lightly anaesthetized with xylazine. Neural activity was recorded before and after the application of TTX into the ipsilateral auditory cortex (AC) through three implanted cannulas in a total dose of 30 ng. The functional status of the AC was monitored by recording click-evoked middle latency responses from a ball electrode implanted on the AC. During inactivation of the AC, IC-ER amplitudes were either increased (48 % of the cases), decreased (32 % of the cases) or not evidently changed (20 % of the cases). Corresponding effects were observed in the firing rate of IC neurons. Functional ablation of the AC also resulted in a significant prolongation of the latencies of individual waves of the IC-ER. However, the discharge pattern of the multiple unit responses, response thresholds and tuning were not altered during AC inactivation. IC neural activity recovered within several hours, and maximally during 2 days. The results reveal principles of the interaction of cortico-tectal pathways with IC neuronal activity.  相似文献

Spontaneous activity of cortical neurons exhibits alternative fluctuations of membrane potential consisting of phased depolarization called "up-state" and persistent hyperpolarization called "down-state" during slow wave sleep and anesthesia. Here, we examined the effects of sound stimuli (noise bursts) on neuronal activity by intracellular recording in vivo from the rat auditory cortex (AC). Noise bursts increased the average time in the up-state by 0.81+/-0.65 s (range, 0.27-1.74 s) related to a 10 s recording duration. The rise times of the spontaneous up-events averaged 69.41+/-18.04 ms (range, 40.10-119.21 ms), while those of the sound-evoked up-events were significantly shorter (p<0.001) averaging only 22.54+/-8.81 ms (range, 9.31-45.74 ms). Sound stimulation did not influence ongoing spontaneous up-events. Our data suggest that a sound stimulus does not interfere with ongoing spontaneous neuronal activity in auditory cortex but can evoke new depolarizations in addition to the spontaneous ones.  相似文献

An ultransensitive triple-column ion-exchange/fluorometric method was utilized to measure the levels of over 30 amino acids and related primary amino compounds in Long-Evans rat superior colliculus (SC), visual cortex (VC) and inferior colliculus (IC). Comparison of levels of amino compounds revealed distinctly different profiles for each region. Major constituents were the neurotransmitters and related compounds glutamate, glutamine, GABA, taurine, aspartate and glycine. Glutathione levels were also relatively high in all three regions. SC exhibited a significantly higher level of GABA and -alanine compared to both VC and IC. VC had significantly higher levels of glutamate and taurine. VC exhibited the lowest level of glycine and IC the highest. A time-course experiment using SC documented that levels of eleven of thirty-four compounds, including GABA, were subject to significant postmortem alteration in vitro. SC GABA stability experiments indicated that significant in vitro increases of free GABA levels between 1 and 4 min postmortem were associated with equimolar decreases of conjugated GABA levels.  相似文献

Under free-field stimulation conditions, corticofugal regulation of auditory sensitivity of neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus of the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus, was studied by blocking activities of auditory cortical neurons with Lidocaine or by electrical stimulation in auditory cortical neuron recording sites. The corticocollicular pathway regulated the number of impulses, the auditory spatial response areas and the frequency-tuning curves of inferior colliculus neurons through facilitation or inhibition. Corticofugal regulation was most effective at low sound intensity and was dependent upon the time interval between acoustic and electrical stimuli. At optimal interstimulus intervals, inferior colliculus neurons had the smallest number of impulses and the longest response latency during corticofugal inhibition. The opposite effects were observed during corticofugal facilitation. Corticofugal inhibitory latency was longer than corticofugal facilitatory latency. Iontophoretic application of γ-aminobutyric acid and bicuculline to inferior colliculus recording sites produced effects similar to what were observed during corticofugal inhibition and facilitation. We suggest that corticofugal regulation of central auditory sensitivity can provide an animal with a mechanism to regulate acoustic signal processing in the ascending auditory pathway. Recent investigations have implicated that the central nervous system has a role in the changes that occur in auditory function following acoustic trauma caused by noise exposure. These investigations indicate that the inferior colliculus may be the primary anatomical location in the ascending auditory pathway where noise-induced neuronal plasticity occurs, thereby resulting in changes in the neuronal processing of auditory information. In the present investigation, we show that the amplitudes of all peaks in the click-evoked response from the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus decrease during a 30 min exposure to a tone (104 dB sound pressure level (SPL) at 4 kHz and 8 kHz). After tone exposure, the amplitudes of two of the peaks of the response from the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus that reflect the input from more caudal structures slowly returned to baseline levels, whereas the amplitudes of the two peaks reflecting neuronal activity in the inferior colliculus increased above baseline levels and remained at the increased levels for at least 90 min following exposure to the tone.We also show that exposure to a 4 kHz tone at 104 dB SPL causes changes in the neuronal processing of tonebursts in the form of changes in the temporal integration function for one of the peaks of the response from the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus that originates in the inferior colliculus. Before tone exposure the amplitude of this peak decreased with increasing stimulus duration, but after tone exposure the amplitude of this peak was independent of the duration of the toneburst stimulus. We interpret these changes as evidence that noise exposure (tone exposure) causes changes in the excitability of the inferior colliculus that are not seen in more caudal structures, and these changes are probably a result of a change in the balance between inhibition and excitation in the inferior colliculus.  相似文献

We have previously shown that systemic administration of S(+)3-chloropropanediol (3-CPD) produces a morphological loss of astrocytes in specific nuclei of the rodent brain that precedes loss of both neurones and endothelial tight junctions. Here, we have evaluated the differential susceptibility of neuronal and astrocytic function to 3-CPD, in order to see if this parallels the morphological selectivity. To do this, we have developed an in vivo method for monitoring astrocyte function over time by giving hourly 20-min bolus challenge exposures to ammonia via an implanted microdialysis probe and measuring the resulting transient increases in the extracellular glutamine : glutamate ratio. These challenge ammonia exposures evoked a stable response for at least 5 h when the probe was implanted in the rat inferior colliculus, but caused no behavioural response or morphological damage. Although 3-CPD produced a rapid and sustained abolition of the ammonia response within 2 h, the field potential response of inferior collicular neurones to sound fell significantly to 75.0 ± 3.9% pre-dose at up to 8 h but then fell markedly, reaching 20.5 ± 3.7% at 2 days. Blood flow in the inferior colliculus also showed only late changes, increasing substantially at 2 days. Astrocyte damage at the EM level was seen from 3 h, followed by loss of astrocytes from 18 h to a minimum of 7 ± 10% control at 3 days. The rapid abolition of the ammonia response suggests that in addition to selective astrocyte death, 3-CPD also produces an earlier impairment of astrocyte function that precedes loss of neuronal function. This initial functional selectivity of 3-CPD provides a potential investigative tool in neurochemical studies of astrocyte-neuronal interactions.  相似文献

The neural modulation in central auditory system plays an important role in perception and processing of sound signal and auditory cognition. The inferior colliculus (IC) is both a relay station in central auditory pathway and a sub-cortical auditory center doing the sound signal processing. IC is also modulated by the descending projections from the cortex and auditory thalamus, medial geniculate body, and these neural modulations not only can affect ongoing sound signal processing but can also induce plastic changes in IC.  相似文献

We examined the frame of reference of auditory responses in the inferior colliculus in monkeys fixating visual stimuli at different locations. Eye position modulated the level of auditory responses in 33% of the neurons we encountered, but it did not appear to shift their spatial tuning. The effect of eye position on auditory responses was substantial-comparable in magnitude to that of sound location. The eye position signal appeared to interact with the auditory responses in at least a partly multiplicative fashion. We conclude that the representation of sound location in primate IC is distributed and that the frame of reference is intermediate between head- and eye-centered coordinates. The information contained in these neurons appears to be sufficient for later neural stages to calculate the positions of sounds with respect to the eyes.  相似文献

Studies of the encoding of sensory stimuli by the brain often consider recorded neurons as a pool of identical units. Here, we report divergence in stimulus-encoding properties between subpopulations of cortical neurons that are classified based on spike timing and waveform features. Neurons in auditory cortex of the awake marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) encode temporal information with either stimulus-synchronized or nonsynchronized responses. When we classified single-unit recordings using either a criteria-based or an unsupervised classification method into regular-spiking, fast-spiking, and bursting units, a subset of intrinsically bursting neurons formed the most highly synchronized group, with strong phase-locking to sinusoidal amplitude modulation (SAM) that extended well above 20 Hz. In contrast with other unit types, these bursting neurons fired primarily on the rising phase of SAM or the onset of unmodulated stimuli, and preferred rapid stimulus onset rates. Such differentiating behavior has been previously reported in bursting neuron models and may reflect specializations for detection of acoustic edges. These units responded to natural stimuli (vocalizations) with brief and precise spiking at particular time points that could be decoded with high temporal stringency. Regular-spiking units better reflected the shape of slow modulations and responded more selectively to vocalizations with overall firing rate increases. Population decoding using time-binned neural activity found that decoding behavior differed substantially between regular-spiking and bursting units. A relatively small pool of bursting units was sufficient to identify the stimulus with high accuracy in a manner that relied on the temporal pattern of responses. These unit type differences may contribute to parallel and complementary neural codes.

Neurons in auditory cortex show highly diverse responses to sounds. This study suggests that neuronal type inferred from baseline firing properties accounts for much of this diversity, with a subpopulation of bursting units being specialized for precise temporal encoding.  相似文献

The inferior colliculus and auditory cortex of the pallid bat contain a large percentage of neurons that are highly selective for the direction and rate of the downward frequency modulated (FM) sweep of the bat’s echolocation pulse. Approximately 25% of neurons tuned to the echolocation pulse respond exclusively to downward FM sweeps. This review focuses on the finding that this selectivity is generated by multiple mechanisms that may act alone or in concert. In the inferior colliculus, selectivity for sweep rate is shaped by at least three mechanisms: shortpass or bandpass tuning for signal duration, delayed high-frequency inhibition that prevents responses to slow sweep rates, and asymmetrical facilitation that occurs only when two tones are presented at appropriate delays. When acting alone, the three mechanisms can produce essentially identical rate selectivity. Direction selectivity can be produced by two mechanisms: an early low-frequency inhibition that prevents responses to upward sweeps, and the same asymmetrical two-tone inhibition that shapes rate tuning. All mechanisms except duration tuning are also present in the auditory cortex. Discussion centers on whether these mechanisms are redundant or complementary.  相似文献

The superior colliculus (SC) in primates plays an important role in orienting gaze and arms toward novel stimuli. Here we ask whether neurons in the intermediate and deep layers of the SC are also involved in the interaction with objects. In two trained monkeys we found a large number of SC units that were specifically activated when the monkeys contacted and pushed a target that had been reached with either hand. These neurons, however, were silent when the monkeys simply looked at or reached for the target but did not touch it. The activity related to interacting with objects was spatially tuned and increased with push strength. Neurons in the SC with this type of activity may be involved in a somatosensory-motor feedback loop that monitors the force of the active muscles together with the spatial position of the limb required for proper interaction with an object.  相似文献

Comparative analysis was performed of sensitivity of three populations of neurons of the inferior colliculus central nucleus and of neurons of the auditory cortex A1 and AAF fields of the house mouse Mus musculus to series of signals of wideband noise with spectral notch shifting along the frequency axis and to series of the band noise signals with shifting band. Sensitivity to spectral notches in noise was estimated from a change of impulse activity depending on notch location on the frequency axis (modulation coefficients were determined as the normalized difference between the maximal and minimal spike number in neuronal responses to all noises with notch exposed in the series). It was shown that the highest modulation coefficient values and accordingly the highest frequency-dependent sensitivity to spectral notches in the noise were peculiar to inhibition-dependent inferior colliculus neurons. Statistical analysis confirmed that distribution of modulation coefficients for the group of the inhibition-dependent neurons differed statistically significantly from the distribution for groups of primary-like and V-shaped inferior colliculus neurons as well as of cortical neurons (U-test, p < 0.0001). The lowest sensitivity to spectral notches was revealed in the V-shaped inferior colliculus neurons and cortical neurons; in these groups, distribution of modulation coefficients did not differed statistically significantly (p > 0.3). Thus, although a part of cortical neurons does have the frequency-dependent selectivity to spectral localizationally informative changes in sound signals, its formation needs participation of the inferior colliculus and its inhibition-dependent neurons. Selectivity to direction of the shift of spectral changes in noise signals in neurons of the inferior colliculus and auditory cortex was similar and was manifested mainly as shift along the frequency axis of dependences of the spike number in the neuronal responses and latent periods on central frequency of notch in noise (the noise band).  相似文献

Ascending and descending projections to the inferior colliculus in the rat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The ascending and descending projections to the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) were studied with the aid of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). HRP-labelled cells were found in contralateral cochlear nuclei, where the majority of different cell types was stained. Few labelled cells were observed in the ipsilateral cochlear nuclei. HRP-positive neurones were found in all nuclei of the superior olivary complex on the ipsilateral side with the exception of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body, which was never labelled either ipsilaterally or contralaterally. The largest concentration of HRP-labelled cells was usually observed in the ipsilateral superior olivary nucleus. Smaller numbers of labelled cells were present in contralateral nuclei of the superior olivary complex. Massive projections to the inferior colliculus were found from the contralateral and ipsilateral dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and ipsilateral ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus. Many neurones of the central and external nuclei of the contralateral inferior colliculus were labelled with HRP. Topographic organisation of the pathways ascending to the colliculus was expressed in the cochlear nuclei, lateral superior olivary nucleus and in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus. HRP--positive cells were found in layer V of the ipsilateral auditory cortex, however, the evidence for topographic organisation was lacking.  相似文献

Representation of visual stimuli in inferior temporal cortex.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
In primates, inferior temporal (IT) cortex is crucial for the processing and storage of visual information about form and colour. This article reviews the properties of IT neurons and considers how these properties may underlie the perceptual and mnemonic functions of IT cortex. The available evidence suggests that the processing of the facial image by IT cortex is similar to its processing of other visual patterns. Faces and other complex visual stimuli appear to be represented by the pattern of responses over a population of IT neurons rather than by the responses of specific 'feature detectors' or 'grandmother' cells. IT neurons with adult-like stimulus properties are present in monkeys as young as six weeks old.  相似文献

The inferior colliculus in the rat midbrain is an auditory relay center whose functional maturation occurs postnatally. We examined by morphometry the vascularity and the nuclear profile density of the inferior colliculus in normal young rats at different ages (before and after the onset of auditory input). We also compared this region with a frontal region of the cerebral cortex in 24-day-old rats. The inferior colliculus from aldehyde-perfused Sprague-Dawley rats aged 5, 9, 14, and 24 days was analyzed by light microscopy of semithin plastic sections. The central region (mostly the central nucleus) was sampled at 5 levels representing its entire rostrocaudal extent. Patent-blood-vessel profiles were counted and classified according to their size and profile orientation. Counts of nuclear profiles in the same sections were also made. In the inferior colliculus of rats between 5 and 24 days of age, the small (less than 10-microns diameter) cross-sectioned vessel profiles increased over 6-fold in number per unit area. Correspondingly the vascular volume density, estimated by differential point counting, increased between these ages. However, there was a decrease in the number of neuronal and glial nuclear profiles per unit area, probably because of growth in the volume of the neuronal perikarya and processes, along with cell emigration reported to occur at early postnatal ages. This study has shown that an increase in vascularity in the central region of the rat inferior colliculus continues for up to 2 weeks after the onset of hearing.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We performed a systematic study to check whether neurons in the area TE (the anterior part of inferotemporal cortex) in rhesus monkey, regarded as the last stage of the ventral visual pathway, could be modulated by auditory stimuli. Two fixating rhesus monkeys were presented with visual, auditory or combined audiovisual stimuli while neuronal responses were recorded. We have found that the visually sensitive neurons are also modulated by audiovisual stimuli. This modulation is manifested as the change of response rate. Our results have shown also that the visual neurons were responsive to the sole auditory stimuli. Therefore, the concept of inferotemporal cortex unimodality in information processing should be re-evaluated.  相似文献

Recently, there has been upsurge of interest in the neural mechanisms of time perception. A central question is whether the representation of time is distributed over brain regions as a function of stimulus modality, task and length of the duration used or whether it is centralized in a single specific and supramodal network. The answers seem to be converging on the former, and many areas not primarily considered as temporal processing areas remain to be investigated in the temporal domain. Here we asked whether the superior temporal gyrus, an auditory modality specific area, is involved in processing of auditory timing. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied over left and right superior temporal gyri while participants performed either a temporal or a frequency discrimination task of single tones. A significant decrease in performance accuracy was observed after stimulation of the right superior temporal gyrus, in addition to an increase in response uncertainty as measured by the Just Noticeable Difference. The results are specific to auditory temporal processing and performance on the frequency task was not affected. Our results further support the idea of distributed temporal processing and speak in favor of the existence of modality specific temporal regions in the human brain.  相似文献
