Hair is preserved for millennia in permafrost; it enshrines a record of biologic rhythms and offers a glimpse at chronobiology as it was in extinct animals. Here we compare biologic rhythms gleaned from mammoth's hairs with those of modern human hair. Four mammoths' hairs came from varying locations in Siberia 4600 km, four time zones, apart ranging in age between 18,000 and 20,000 years before present. We used two contemporaneous human hairs for comparison. Power spectra derived from hydrogen isotope ratios along the length of the hairs gave insight into biologic rhythms, which were different in the mammoths depending on location and differed from humans. Hair growth for mammoths was ~31 cms/year and ~16 cms/year for humans. Recurrent annual rhythms of slow and fast growth varying from 3.4 weeks/cycles to 8.7 weeks/cycles for slow periods and 1.2 weeks/cycles to 2.2 weeks/cycles for fast periods were identified in mammoth's hairs. The mineral content of mammoth's hairs was measured by electron microprobe analysis (k-ratios), which showed no differences in sulfur amongst the mammoth hairs but significantly more iron then in human hair. The fractal nature of the data derived from the hairs became evident in Mandelbrot sets derived from hydrogen isotope ratios, mineral content and geographic location. Confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed varied degrees of preservation of the cuticle largely independent of age but not location of the specimens. X-ray fluorescence microprobe and fluorescence computed micro-tomography analyses allowed evaluation of metal distribution and visualization of hollow tubes in the mammoth's hairs. Seasonal variations in iron and copper content combined with spectral analyses gave insights into variation in food intake of the animals. Biologic rhythms gleaned from power spectral plots obtained by modern methods revealed life style and behavior of extinct mega-fauna.  相似文献

This report on a male head revealed biologic rhythms, as gleaned from hydrogen isotope ratios in hair, consistent with a South-American origin and Atomic Mass Spectrometry radiocarbon dating (AMS) compatible with the last pre-Hispanic period (1418-1491 AD, 95.4% probability). Biopsies showed exceptionally well-preserved tissues. The hair contained high levels of toxic elements (lead, arsenic and mercury) incompatible with life. There was no evidence for lead deposition in bone consistent with post-mortem accumulation of this toxic element in the hair. We propose that the high content of metals in hair was the result of metabolic activity of bacteria leading to metal complexation in extra cellular polymeric substances (EPS). This is a recognized protective mechanism for bacteria that thrive in toxic environments. This mechanism may account for the tissues preservation and gives a hint at soil composition where the head was presumably buried. Our results have implications for forensic toxicology which has, hitherto, relied on hair analyses as one means to reconstruct pre-mortem metabolism and for detecting toxic elements accumulated during life. Our finding also has implications for other archaeological specimens where similar circumstances may distort the results of toxicological studies.  相似文献

We studied the influence of three types of breathing [spontaneous, frequency controlled (0.25 Hz), and hyperventilation with 100% oxygen] and apnea on R-R interval, photoplethysmographic arterial pressure, and muscle sympathetic rhythms in nine healthy young adults. We integrated fast Fourier transform power spectra over low (0.05-0.15 Hz) and respiratory (0.15-0.3 Hz) frequencies; estimated vagal baroreceptor-cardiac reflex gain at low frequencies with cross-spectral techniques; and used partial coherence analysis to remove the influence of breathing from the R-R interval, systolic pressure, and muscle sympathetic nerve spectra. Coherence among signals varied as functions of both frequency and time. Partialization abolished the coherence among these signals at respiratory but not at low frequencies. The mode of breathing did not influence low-frequency oscillations, and they persisted during apnea. Our study documents the independence of low-frequency rhythms from respiratory activity and suggests that the close correlations that may exist among arterial pressures, R-R intervals, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity at respiratory frequencies result from the influence of respiration on these measures rather than from arterial baroreflex physiology. Most importantly, our results indicate that correlations among autonomic and hemodynamic rhythms vary over time and frequency, and, thus, are facultative rather than fixed.  相似文献

Electromyograms recorded from the lower limbs of humans while running were submitted to a time/frequency analysis using wavelets. The results of the wavelet analysis yielded intensity spectra at every time point during the swing and the stance phase. It was previously shown that more or less high frequency components get activated during different periods of the movement. The purpose of this study was to test to what extent the spectra can be reconstructed by a linear superposition of two generating spectra that were associated to groups of fast and slow muscle fibers. The terms fast and slow do not only refer to the conduction velocity but also to the shape of the motor unit action potential and are used to characterize the groups in a broader sense. The principal component analysis of the spectra confirmed that a two dimensional spectral space was appropriate. A parametric spectral decomposition was used to extract the generating spectra within the two dimensional spectral space. The generating spectra were in turn used to compute the power with which the groups of muscle fibers contribute to the measured spectra and thus to the overall muscular activity. The power that was obtained for the different time points during the movement reflects the biomechanically important interplay between the groups of muscle fibers while running.  相似文献

Two types of attention (active and passive) were described as specific correlations between central and peripheral oscillatory processes. The active attention was characterized by an enhance of the activity of the high-frequency respiratory heart rate modulator positively correlated with an increase in the EEG gamma-rhythm power. At the same time, the activity of the low-frequency heart-rate modulator was positively correlated with the depression of the low-frequency EEG and with phasic gamma-rhythm reactions (300 ms after stimulus presentation). During the passive attention, the power of the metabolic hear rate modulator increased, its positive correlation with the spectral power of the low-frequency EEG rhythms was observed. The sensory component of the gamma-rhythm was shown to increase with attention attraction.  相似文献

While understanding somatic variability among wild primates can provide insight into natural patterns of developmental plasticity, published data for living populations are rare. Here we provide such information for two distinct wild populations of Lemur catta. Variants observed include microtia, athelia, and female virilization. Dental variants observed include individuals with supernumerary teeth, rotated teeth, maxillary incisor agenesis, and severe malocclusion. There was a sex bias in incisor agenesis, with 5 of 7 examples (71%) found in males. The frequency of dental variants in our sample is lower than that seen in many other lemuriformes, as well as other primates. This may be a product of their less derived dental formula and/or their relatively fast dental development. Amassing such data is a critical first step to assess if wild primate populations are exhibiting normal variability or are being affected by potential inbreeding and/or environmental effects.  相似文献

We report a new quantitative proteomics approach that combines the best aspects of stable isotope labeling of amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) labeling and spectral counting. The SILAC peptide count ratio analysis (SPeCtRA, http://proteomics.mcw.edu/visualize ) method relies on MS2 spectra rather than ion chromatograms for quantitation and therefore does not require the use of high mass accuracy mass spectrometers. The inclusion of a stable isotope label allows the samples to be combined before sample preparation and analysis, thus avoiding many of the sources of variability that can plague spectral counting. To validate the SPeCtRA method, we have analyzed samples constructed with known ratios of protein abundance. Finally, we used SPeCtRA to compare endothelial cell protein abundances between high (20 mM) and low (11 mM) glucose culture conditions. Our results demonstrate that SPeCtRA is a protein quantification technique that is accurate and sensitive as well as easy to automate and apply to high‐throughput analysis of complex biological samples.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms of running-wheel activity, food intake and drinking were monitored in old male rats of Long-Evans strain over 22 months of age in both entrained (light:dark 12:12, LD) and free running condition (continuous illumination, LL) and were compared with those of young adult male rats of 3.5 to 6.5 months of age. Twenty-four hour distribution of running activity, feeding events and licking events of young rats as well as old rats showed bi- or tri-modal patterns during the 12 hr dark period of the LD schedule. In the light period, 2 out of 8 old rats, 6 out of 10 old rats and 1 out of 6 old rats had 1 or 2 medium or high peaks in running activity, feeding events and licking events, respectively, leading to equal distribution between the dark and light period. In the LD schedule, old rats showed a decrease in running-wheel activity, its patterns and power spectra, a decrease in feeding events and its power spectra in 6 rats which lost circadian rhythms and increase in feeding events and its power spectra in 4 rats which still showed circadian rhythms and increase in licking events. LL suppressed running-wheel activity, its patterns and power spectra, licking events and its power spectra and feeding events in young rats. However, LL could suppress only feeding events of 4 rats which still showed circadian rhythms and licking events and its spectral level in old rats. The possible causes of decreased response to LL in old rats and its implication are discussed.  相似文献

We performed a global scale analysis of available leaf wax n -alkane δ D data compiled from our new results, as well as from the literature and expressed as average values of D/H ratios from three common lipids of n -alkanes with odd carbon numbers ( n -C27, n -C29, and n -C31) from living higher plants. Our results clearly indicate multiple controls of hydrogen isotope composition and its variability in plants leaf wax. (1) At the global scale, precipitation δ D values play a dominating factor that exercises the first order of control for hydrogen isotopic compositions in plant leaf wax. The hydrogen isotopic composition of plant leaf wax tracks the decreasing trend of precipitation δ D with increasing latitude. (2) Because of different water acquisition systems, plant life form influences the hydrogen isotopic composition of leaf wax n -alkanes with woody plants and grasses having different responses to the change of global precipitation δ D. (3) Physiological difference, due to different photosynthesis pathways or different water usage strategies, can leave an imprint on δ D patterns of plant leaf waxes, causing δ D variations among plants using the same source water. While these results better explain the variability of hydrogen isotope composition in leaf wax, they also have important implications for the interpretation of n -alkane δ D data from fossils and ancient sediments.  相似文献

Simultaneous recording of the EEG activity of superficial cortical and deep (caudate nucleus, dorsal hippocampus, anterior hypothalamus) brain parts has been performed for the first time after a 2-h swinging of frequency of 0.2 Hz in Wistar rats of juvenile age. Swinging was produced on a 4-bar parallel swing. Using a Neuron-Spectr electroencephalograph and a Diana program, normalized power spectra of wave EEG components, synchronization coefficients, and coefficients of cross-correlation between bioelectrical potentials of various brain structures were determined. After a 2-h swinging, the mean value of normalized power of slow waves of delta-diapason in hypothalamus and hippocampus was found to increase statistically significantly, while normalized power of fast waves of alpha- and beta1-diapasons in hippocampus decreased (p < 0.05). A statistically significant increase of synchronization coefficient was observed in hypothalamus and hippocampus. Changes of coefficients of cross-correlation between hypothalamus and hippocampus and other brain strictures were of the oppositely directed, individual character. In the parietal occipital brain cortex and in caudate nucleus, the changes of the EEG spectral composition also were of individual character. The obtained results on the whole correspond to data about an enhancement of the EEG low-frequency rhythms at swinging and agree with the resonance hypothesis of motion sickness.  相似文献

Temporal stable isotope records derived from animal tissues are increasingly studied to determine dietary and climatic histories. Despite this, the turnover times governing rates of isotope equilibration in specific tissues following a dietary isotope change are poorly known. The dietary isotope changes recorded in the hair and blood bicarbonate of two adult horses in this study are found to be successfully described by a model having three exponential isotope pools. For horse tail hair, the carbon isotope response observed following a dietary change from a C3 to a C4 grass was consistent with a pool having a very fast turnover rate (t 1/2~0.5 days) that made up ~41% of the isotope signal, a pool with an intermediate turnover rate (t 1/2 ~4 days) that comprised ~15% of the isotope signal, and a pool with very slow turnover rate (t 1/2 ~140 days) that made up ~44% of the total isotope signal. The carbon isotope signature of horse blood bicarbonate, in contrast, had a different isotopic composition, with ~67% of the isotope signal coming from a fast turnover pool (t 1/2 0.2 days), ~17% from a pool with an intermediate turnover rate (t 1/2 ~3 days) and ~16% from a pool with a slow turnover rate (t 1/2 ~50 days). The constituent isotope pools probably correspond to one exogenous and two endogenous sources. The exogenous source equates to our fast turnover pool, and the pools with intermediate and slow turnover rates are thought to derive from the turnover of metabolically active tissues and relatively inactive tissues within the body, respectively. It seems that a greater proportion of the amino acids available for hair synthesis come from endogenous sources compared to the compounds undergoing cellular catabolism in the body. Consequently, the isotope composition of blood bicarbonate appears to be much more responsive to dietary isotope changes, whereas the amino acids in the blood exhibit considerable isotopic inertia.  相似文献

Synchronous activity among synaptically connected interneurons is thought to organize temporal patterns such as gamma and theta rhythms in cortical circuits. Interactions between distinct interneuron circuits may underlie more complex patterns, such as nested rhythms. Here, we demonstrate such an interaction between two groups of CA1 interneurons, GABA(A,slow) and GABA(A,fast) cells, that may contribute to theta and gamma rhythms, respectively. Stratum lacunosum-moleculare (SL-M) stimuli that activate GABA(A,slow) inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) in pyramidal cells simultaneously depress the rate and amplitude of spontaneous GABA(A,fast) IPSCs for several hundred milliseconds. This suppression has a similar pharmacological profile to GABA(A,slow) IPSCs, and SL-M stimuli elicit GABA(A,slow) IPSCs in interneurons. We conclude that GABA(A,slow) cells inhibit both pyramidal cells and GABA(A,fast) interneurons and postulate that this interaction contributes to nested theta/gamma rhythms in hippocampus.  相似文献

Rhythms of resting fluctuations of circulatory parameters in man reveal a considerable interindividual variability. We posed the question whether these rhythms are long-term individual characteristics. In nine healthy subjects aged 19-23 years the blood pressure and the finger blood flow were recorded by indirect continuous methods, together with cardiac intervals and respiratory movements. These recordings were repeated in each subject after 1 year. The power spectra of all the parameters recorded were calculated for 5-min periods. The shape of spectra and the division of power into four ranges of frequencies were compared to the spectra recorded after 1 year in each subject and the degree of similarity was evaluated by means of correlation analysis. The average measures of similarity (correlation coefficients) were high, cardiac intervals 0.527, systolic pressure 0.782, pulse pressure 0.755, diastolic pressure 0.709, mean blood pressure 0.673, blood flow 0.818 and respiration 0.627. All these values were higher than values obtained by comparison of spectra of two individuals chosen randomly. The differences were statistically significant for cardiac intervals (Wilcoxon test: P less than 0.05), pulse pressure (P less than 0.05) and respiration (P less than 0.01). These results have shown that interindividual variability of circulatory and respiratory spectra was greater than the intraindividual one. The resting circulatory rhythms are very stable individual features.  相似文献

Aims We aimed at determining differences in the leaf spectral signatures of plant species groups growing in habitats along the hydrological gradient of an intermittent wetland and to define leaf traits that explain their variability. We want to contribute to the understanding of the causes for plant spectrum variability at leaf and community levels. Methods We measured leaf reflectance spectra (300–887nm) of representative plant species from different habitats and analyzed spectral differences among species groups. To explain leaf spectra variability within a group, we performed detailed analyses of leaf morphological and biochemical traits in selected species.Important findings The reflectance spectra of the different species groups differed most in the green, yellow and red spectral ranges. The reflectance spectra of submerged leaves of hydrophytes with simple structures were explained by their biochemical traits (carotenoids), while for more complex aerial leaves, morphological traits were more important. In submerged and natant leaves of amphiphytes, total mesophyll and spongy tissue thickness were the most important traits, and these explained 44% and 47%, respectively, of the spectrum variability of each plant group. In general, the redundancy analysis biplots show that samples of different plant species colonizing the same habitat form separate clusters and are related to the explanatory variables in different ways. The redundancy analysis biplots of helophytes and wet meadow species show clustering of graminoids and dicots into two distinct groups. Leaf encrustation (prickle hair properties and epidermis thickness) is important for graminoids, while leaf thickness and specific leaf area have more important roles in dicots. Our results show that knowledge of the species composition and leaf traits is necessary to interpret the reflectance spectra of such plant communities.  相似文献

The stable hydrogen isotope ratios (δD) of leaf wax n-alkanes record valuable information on plant and ecosystem water relations. It remains, however, unknown if leaf wax n-alkane δD values record only environmental variation during the brief period of time of leaf growth or if leaf wax n-alkane δD values are affected by environmental variability throughout the entire lifespan of a leaf. To resolve these uncertainties, we irrigated Populus trichocarpa trees with a pulse of deuterium-enriched water and used compound-specific stable hydrogen isotope analyses to test if the applied tracer could be recovered from leaf wax n-alkanes of leaves that were at different stages of their development during the tracer application. Our experiment revealed that only leaf wax n-alkanes from leaves that had developed during the time of the tracer application were affected, while leaves that were already fully matured at the time of the tracer application were not. We conclude from our study that under controlled environmental conditions, leaf wax n-alkanes are synthesized only early in the ontogeny of a leaf. Our experiment has implications for the interpretation of leaf wax n-alkane δD values in an environmental context, as it suggests that these compounds record only a brief period of the environmental variability that a leaf experiences throughout its life.  相似文献

The stable hydrogen (delta(2)H) and oxygen (delta(18)O) isotope ratios of organic and inorganic materials record biological and physical processes through the effects of substrate isotopic composition and fractionations that occur as reactions proceed. At large scales, these processes can exhibit spatial predictability because of the effects of coherent climatic patterns over the Earth's surface. Attempts to model spatial variation in the stable isotope ratios of water have been made for decades. Leaf water has a particular importance for some applications, including plant organic materials that record spatial and temporal climate variability and that may be a source of food for migrating animals. It is also an important source of the variability in the isotopic composition of atmospheric gases. Although efforts to model global-scale leaf water isotope ratio spatial variation have been made (especially of delta(18)O), significant uncertainty remains in models and their execution across spatial domains. We introduce here a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach to the generation of global, spatially-explicit isotope landscapes (= isoscapes) of "climate normal" leaf water isotope ratios. We evaluate the approach and the resulting products by comparison with simulation model outputs and point measurements, where obtainable, over the Earth's surface. The isoscapes were generated using biophysical models of isotope fractionation and spatially continuous precipitation isotope and climate layers as input model drivers. Leaf water delta(18)O isoscapes produced here generally agreed with latitudinal averages from GCM/biophysical model products, as well as mean values from point measurements. These results show global-scale spatial coherence in leaf water isotope ratios, similar to that observed for precipitation and validate the GIS approach to modeling leaf water isotopes. These results demonstrate that relatively simple models of leaf water enrichment combined with spatially continuous precipitation isotope ratio and climate data layers yield accurate global leaf water estimates applicable to important questions in ecology and atmospheric science.  相似文献

Stable isotope analysis of feathers can be useful in the study of seasonal interactions and migratory connectivity in birds. For the Palaearctic–African migration system, however, the lack of isotope data from feathers of known origin in Africa renders the geographic assignment of birds captured on European breeding grounds to potential wintering areas problematic. Rectrices of the threatened aquatic warbler Acrocephalus paludicola grown in Africa were sampled across six European countries to assess whether birds in different breeding populations shared similar isotopic signatures and so were likely to have wintered in the same region in Africa. Freshly grown feathers of aquatic warblers collected at the only known wintering site in Senegal showed high variation in carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen isotope ratios. Due to similarly high variation in isotope ratios of African‐grown feathers within all breeding populations, it was not possible to determine whether different populations wintered in different regions. However, isotope signatures of 20% of birds captured on European breeding grounds fell outside the range of those captured in Senegal, suggesting a wider wintering distribution than is currently known. We therefore assessed whether the origin of these feathers could be estimated by trying to establish isotopic gradients across sub‐Saharan West Africa. Feathers of three ecologically similar surrogate species were sampled from wetlands across a 3000 km east‐west and a 2000 km north–south transect. Within‐site variation in feather isotope ratios was frequently larger than the difference predicted by gradients across West Africa. Thus, predicting the origin of individual feathers using single‐isotope gradients was not reliable. The large within‐site variability of feather isotope ratios of a habitat specialist species like the aquatic warbler indicates that using feather isotope ratios will require large sample sizes from many locations, and may thus not be an efficient tool in identifying wintering areas of Palaearctic–African migrants.  相似文献

A new computerized method for EEG rhythms extraction is proposed as a development of the idea of adjustable boundaries of frequency components that was put forward in previous investigations. Principle component analysis of the correlation matrix of EEG spectra with subsequent rotation of factor solutions was used for decomposition of a spectrum into physically meaningful spectral components. The method was tested on EEG of 14 healthy subjects recorded in 17 functional waking states. Fourteen independent spectral components in the spectral range from 0 to 100 Hz were extracted and their frequency boundaries were consistent with the current knowledge on frequency components of EEG oscillations. Main advantage of the described method is the adjustable estimation of EEG frequency oscillators taking into account characteristic properties of individual EEGs. Possible area of application might be the correct evaluation of spectral power of the EEG rhythms, EEG coherence and other spectral characteristics in clinical and experimental research, studies of the frequency characteristics of the EEG rhythms in different human functional states, changes in frequency characteristics of the EEG rhythms during maturation and in mental pathology.  相似文献
