By using faecal egg counting, larvae culturing, coccidian oocysts identifying, the present study was conducted to determine infection intensity of nematodosis and coccidosis of young sheep (6–12 months) raised under three types of feeding and management regims namely, confinement system (2 farms, n = 30), semiconfinement system (2 farms, n = 30) and grazing system (2 farms, n = 30) in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR) in China. The mean egg counts of gastrointestinal nematodes were zero in confinement system, 63 EPG in semiconfinement system and 263 EPG in grazing system, while the mean coccidian oocyst counts (oocysts per gram of faeces, OPG) of each regim were 3784, 1713 and 687, respectively. Gastrointestinal parasite loads of sheep were attributed to low EPG (zero EPG) in confinement, moderate EPG in semiconfinement and high EPG in grazing regim, respectively, which in turn resulted in high OPG in confinement, moderate OPG in semiconfinement and low OPG in grazing regim, respectively. The infection rate of nematodes of sheep was zero in confinement, 43.33% in semiconfinement and 96.67% in grazing regim, while the infection rate of coccidia was 100%, 96.67% and 86.67%, respectively. The nematodes of sheep in grazing regim were, in the order of prevalence: Ostertagia (Teladorsagia) (80.00%), Marshallagia (66.67%), Nematodirus (63.33%), Trichostrongylus (43.33%), Haemonchus contortus (43.33%), and Chabertia (16.67%), while in semiconfinement regim were, in the same order of prevalence: 43.33%, 10.00%, 40.00%, 20%, 20% and 0%, respectively. Seven species of Eimeria were recognized in the three management regims. Their prevalence rates were E. parva (85.56%), E. ahsata (70.00%), E. ovinoidalis (34.44%), E. intricata (21.11%), E. crandallis (20.00%), E. granulosa (18.89%), and E. faurei (5.56%). These results may provide a further understanding of the factors associated with parasite epizootiology under different feeding and management regims.  相似文献

Impacts of sheep ticks Ixodes ricinus on livestock, gamebirds and wildlife are of concern across Europe. The present study describes livestock and tick management by 36 farmers from three upland sites of conservation importance in North Wales, where farmers consider that ticks have increased during the last 25 years. Sheep, average densities of 2.0 animals per ha were treated with pour‐on acaricides in spring, again in July, and also when removed from the moor in autumn. Given acaricide efficacy rates, sheep were susceptible to tick bites for half the period on the moor. Sheep from 17 farms were examined for ticks. Infestations were similar between farms and in relation to the acaricide used, averaging 9.3 ticks per sheep, although they were lower where the interval between successive acaricide treatments was shorter. Repeated sampling of sheep and red grouse chicks showed no annual difference in tick burdens on grouse chicks, which averaged 6.2 ticks per chick, although there were three‐fold fewer ticks on sheep in 2018 than in previous years. Tick bite rates on sheep and grouse were higher than elsewhere in the U.K. Most farmers interviewed would aim to improve their tick management using longer‐lasting acaricides and treating sheep more frequently, although they would need advice and financial help, which is currently unavailable via Government funded agri‐environment schemes.  相似文献

Abstract As wolves (Canis lupus) recover in Poland, their depredation on domestic animals is increasing, as have conflicts between wolves and farmers. From 1998 to 2004, I investigated spatial and temporal patterns of 591 verified incidents of wolf depredation in the eastern part of the Polish Carpathian Mountains. The wolf population I surveyed covered an estimated range of 4,993 km2. Depredation occurred over 1,595 km2 of that area. Sheep accounted for 84.8% of domestic animals killed by wolves. Depredation on sheep and number of sheep farms attacked by wolves increased between 1998 and 2004 (r2 = 0.61, P = 0.04 and r2 = 0.89, P = 0.02, respectively). The number of wolf attacks on sheep farms in a given year were negatively correlated to red deer (Cervus elaphus) population numbers (R2 = 0.69, P = 0.02). The amount of depredation caused by each of the 4 monitored packs was best explained by farm density in their territories (R2 = 0.59, P = 0.004). Number of attacks recorded on farms was positively correlated to distance from the farm to the pack's den and rendezvous sites (R2 = 0.16, P = 0.04). Of depredation recorded in the 4 pack's territories I surveyed, 77% occurred in 4 farms with no or inadequate protection. I concluded that wolf depredation in the studied area is opportunistic. Wolf predation intensity is a function of decreasing abundance of red deer, the density of sheep farms, and proximity of farms to the summer activity centers of wolf packs, and it is facilitated by poor husbandry practices. These results can aid in preventing wolf depredation and provide a foundation for a wolf management plan.  相似文献

Aims: To assess whether flies and slugs acquire strains of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli present in local ruminant faeces. Methods and Results: Campylobacter was cultured from flies, slugs and ruminant faeces that were collected from a single farm in Scotland over a 19‐week period. The isolates were typed using multi‐locus sequence typing (MLST) and compared with isolates from cattle and sheep faeces. Campylobacter jejuni and Camp. coli were isolated from 5·8% (n = 155, average of 75 flies per pool) and 13·3% (n = 15, average of 8·5 slugs per pool) of pooled fly and slug samples, respectively. The most common sequence type (ST) in flies was Camp. coli ST‐962 (approx. 40%) regardless of the prevalence in local cattle (2·3%) or sheep (25·0%) faeces. Two positive slug pools generated the same ST that has not been reported elsewhere. Conclusions: Despite their low carriage rate, flies are able to acquire Campylobacter STs that are locally present, although the subset carried may be biased when compared to local source. Slugs were shown to carry a previously unreported Campylobacter ST. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study has demonstrated that flies carry viable Campylobacter and may contribute to the transfer of STs within and between groups of animals on farms. Further, they may therefore present a risk to human health via their contact with ready‐to‐eat foods or surfaces.  相似文献

The distribution of a 330 bp cpDNA insertion was reexamined in British material of Senecio cambrensis (2n = 6x = 60), its two putative parental taxa, S. squalidus (2n = 2x = 20) and S. vulgaris (2n = 4x = 40), and the closely related Canary Islands' endemic S. teneriffae (2n = 6x = 60). This formed part of a test of the hypothesis that the Welsh form of S. cambrensis is derived from introduced S. teneriffae rather than having originated in Wales via allopolyploidy as previously supposed. It was established that the 330 bp insertion was carried by all plants of Welsh S. cambrensis and also S. teneriffae, but was absent from the cpDNA of Edinburgh S. cambrensis and all plants of British S. squalidus and S. vulgaris var. vulgaris surveyed. However, two of 19 individuals tested of S. vulgaris var. hibernicus also possessed the cpDNA insertion, indicating that it is present in British material of S. vulgaris, although at low frequency. The close similarity between S. teneriffae and S. cambrensis, especially the Welsh form of S. cambrensis, was confirmed by the results of a restriction analysis of rDNA, and also morphometric and crossing studies. However, isozyme analysis showed that S. teneriffae is monomorphic for βEST-3 and ACO-1 phenotypes that are not present in Welsh and Edinburgh S. cambrensis, nor in S. squalidus and S. vulgaris material surveyed. It is concluded that S. teneriffae and S. cambrensis are two closely related allohexaploid taxa that have very similar, but different origins. It is postulated that whereas S. cambrensis (in Wales and Edinburgh) is the allohexaploid of S. vulgaris and S. squalidus, S. teneriffae is possibly the allohexaploid of S. vulgaris and S. glaucus, the latter being a diploid species closely related to S. squalidus.  相似文献

The paper provides a summary of three studies conducted in the eastern Free State of South Africa between 1998 and 2000. In a questionnaire-based study approximately 21% of interviewed resource-poor farmers (n = 150) indicated that they experienced problems with ticks and tick-borne diseases. About 56% of farmers indicated that tick-related problems were most severe in summer, while 32% indicated that the most problems were encountered in winter. About 12% indicated that the tick problems were experienced throughout the year. Farmers also indicated that the highest tick burdens were experienced between spring and early winter. The principal ticks infesting cattle (n = 30) were found to be Boophilus decoloratus (53.1%), Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (44.7%), Rhipicephalus follis (1.0%), Rhipicephalus gertrudae (0.7%) and Rhipicephalus warburtoni (0.4%). On small stock (n = 188), R. evertsi evertsi (68%) and B. decoloratus (32%) were recorded as the main ticks in the study area. A sero-epidemiological survey of cattle (n = 386) showed that 94% of cattle were sero-positive for Babesia bigemina by IFAT, while 87% were sero-positive for Anaplasma by indirect ELISA. All the animals were sero-negative for Babesia bovis and this is probably because the tick vector, Boophilus microplus, is not present in the study area. All sheep and goats were sero-positive for Theileria species by IFAT while 85% of sheep and 100% of goats tested positive for Anaplasma species by competition inhibition ELISA. The high incidence of positive serological results for B. bigemina and Anaplasma in cattle, and Theileria and Anaplasma in sheep and goats and the absence of clinical cases would indicate that this area is endemically stable for these diseases. Viruses are believed to be a significant cause of recreationally associated water‐borne disease. However, they have been difficult to document because of the wide variety of illnesses that they cause and the limitations in previous detection methods. Noroviruses are believed to be the single largest cause of outbreaks, which have been documented in the published literature 45% (n = 25), followed by adenovirus (24%), echovirus (18%), hepatitis A virus (7%) and coxsackieviruses (5%). Just under half of the outbreaks occurred in swimming pools (49%), while the second largest outbreak occurred in lakes or ponds (40%). The number of reported outbreaks associated with noroviruses has increased significantly in recent years probably because of better methods for virus detection. Inadequate disinfection was related to 69% (n = 18) of swimming pool outbreaks. A lack of required reporting and nonuniform water quality and chlorination/disinfection standards continues to contribute to water‐borne recreational disease outbreaks.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Myoporum platycarpum R. Br. (Myoporaceae) is widely distributed through semi‐arid New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria, where it occurs as an upper‐storey dominant or co‐dominant tree over chenopod shrublands. Previous studies have concluded that the seedlings and juveniles of many shrubs and trees, including M. platycarpum, are selectively grazed by sheep and rabbits, which threatens their long‐term survival in rangelands. The aim of this study was to assess the survivorship of M. platycarpum seedlings grazed by sheep and rabbits in a rangeland setting. Seedlings of M. platycarpum were raised in the greenhouse and planted in the field and individually fenced to allow or prevent access by various herbivores. Over 1 year, the frequency of grazing and size of canopy was recorded. A flexible mixed model incorporating cubic smoothing splines was used to describe the relationship between change in canopy volume over time, fixed effects (exclosure type, time, rainfall and egesta weights) and random variability among plants, replicates and sites. The mixed models showed that there were no significant differences in canopy volume over time between sheep and rabbit‐proof exclosures, indicating that rabbits were not significantly affecting the seedlings, browsing only five of those available to them, of which three survived. Large herbivores (sheep and/or kangaroos) grazed un‐caged seedlings, resulting in significantly smaller canopy volumes, and higher death rates (80%). Although supplementary irrigation was applied, background losses due to desiccation in caged seedlings were up to 50%.  相似文献

Insectivorous bats are efficient predators of pest arthropods in agroecosystems. This pest control service has been estimated to be worth billions of dollars to agriculture globally. However, few studies have explicitly investigated the composition and abundance of dietary prey items consumed or assessed the ratio of pest and beneficial arthropods, making it difficult to evaluate the quality of the pest control service provided. In this study, we used metabarcoding to identify the prey items eaten by insectivorous bats over the cotton‐growing season in an intensive cropping region in northern New South Wales, Australia. We found that seven species of insectivorous bat (n = 58) consumed 728 prey species, 13 of which represented around 50% of total prey abundance consumed. Importantly, the identified prey items included major arthropod pests, comprising 65% of prey relative abundance and 13% of prey species recorded. Significant cotton pests such as Helicoverpa punctigera (Australian bollworm) and Achyra affinitalis (cotton webspinner) were detected in at least 76% of bat fecal samples, with Teleogryllus oceanicus (field crickets), Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm), and Crocidosema plebejana (cotton tipworm) detected in 55% of bat fecal samples. Our results indicate that insectivorous bats are selective predators that exploit a narrow selection of preferred pest taxa and potentially play an important role in controlling lepidopteran pests on cotton farms. Our study provides crucial information for farmers to determine the service or disservice provided by insectivorous bats in relation to crops, for on‐farm decision making.  相似文献

The vector of lumpy skin disease (LSD), a viral disease affecting Bovidae, is currently unknown. To evaluate the possible vector of LSD virus (LSDV) under field conditions, a yearlong trapping of dipterans was conducted in dairy farms that had been affected by LSD, 1‐2 years previously. This was done in order to calculate monthly relative abundances of each dipteran in each farm throughout the year. The relative abundances of Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) in the months parallel to the outbreaks (December and April) were significantly higher than those of other dipterans. A stable fly population model based on weather parameters for the affected area was used to validate these findings. Its results were significantly correlated with S. calcitrans abundance. This model, based on weather parameters during the epidemic years showed that S. calcitrans populations peaked in the months of LSD onset in the studied farms. These observations and model predictions revealed a lower abundance of stable flies during October and November, when LSD affected adjacent grazing beef herds. These findings therefore suggest that S. calcitrans is a potential vector of LSD in dairy farms and that another vector is probably involved in LSDV transmission in grazing herds. These findings should be followed up with vector competence studies.  相似文献

Fungus diseases on potato seed tubers planted in England and Wales, 1963-76   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
During 1963-76 samples of potato tubers from commercial seed stocks of cvs King Edward (14 yr), Pentland Crown (9 yr), Majestic (7 yr), Pentland Dell (3 yr), Record and Arran Pilot (2 yr) were received from farms in England and Wales. Fifty tubers from each sample were examined macroscopically for fungus diseases and eyes were excised from a 20-tuber sub-sample, incubated and examined for pathogenic fungi; 50 tubers were stored on trays to sprout and examined for diseases and sprouting in May and in most years samples of 50 tubers were wounded by dropping onto expanded metal, stored at 5° C and examined for gangrene and dry rot after 12 wk. Amounts of disease varied between years and during 14 yr black scurf and powdery scab on King Edward tended to increase and skin spot and late blight decrease. On average 44% of King Edward tubers were affected with skin spot, 25% with black scurf and 16% with powdery scab. Gangrene affected 5% of tubers and 97% of the isolates from rots were identified as Phoma exigua var. foveata. Wounding tubers increased the incidence of gangrene three-fold. During 1963-69 late blight affected 2% of King Edward tubers but fewer in later years and in other cultivars. Majestic had most common scab (44% tubers) and Arran Pilot most dry rot (9% tubers) and this disease was increased by wounding tubers. Conidiophores of Helminthosporium solani (silver scurf) were more common on excised eyes of Pentland Crown, Record and Arran Pilot than of other cultivars, and isolations from verticillate conidiophores that developed on the side of incubated eye plugs of King Edward and Majestic stocks gave pure cultures of Verticillium tricorpus (78%), V. nigrescens (9%) and V. nubilum (3%). Proportions of tubers with different diseases were affected by their country of origin; Scottish seed had most skin spot and gangrene, Irish seed most powdery scab and English seed most common scab, late blight and H. solani. There was also evidence of differing disease incidence in seed from different geographical areas in Scotland and England. Up to half the King Edward and Pentland Crown stocks examined in 1975 and 1976 were derived from stem cuttings and average amounts of diseased tubers were similar to those in stocks not derived from stem cuttings. Annual and cultivar differences in disease incidence and effects of date of receipt of seed on farms are discussed.  相似文献

Questions: What is the best grassland management regime for the threatened plant species Gladiolus imbricatus; is the stage structure of local populations a feasible indicator of the effect of changed management. Location: Coastal meadow system in southwestern Estonia. Methods : The effect of five management regimes was studied in a long‐term (three‐year) field experiment: (1) mowing in late July, (2) grazing by cattle, (3) grazing by sheep, (4) sheep grazing during the first year and mowing during subsequent years, (5) no management (control). Results: The population density increased significantly in response to the mowing treatment and to the mowing after sheep grazing treatment. The proportion of grazed plant individuals was higher in the sheep‐grazed than in the cattle‐grazed treatment. Generative and vegetative adult individuals of G. imbricatus were significantly more damaged by cattle herbivory than juveniles. All management regimes shifted the population structure towards a dynamic state where juvenile stages dominate, while the not managed control retained a regressive population structure. Conclusions: Population stage structure was a useful indicator of different management conditions, even in the case where population density did not differ. As indicated by population stage structure, the best management regime for G. imbricatus was either mowing in late July only, or alternation of grazing and mowing in different years.  相似文献

Questions: The formerly overgrazed Inner Mongolia steppe was subject to retrogressive succession. Today, Artemisia frigida and Potentilla acaulis are two dominant species in different phases of successive degradation. To investigate the impact of grazing intensity on spatial community structure, we investigated the small‐scale spatial association between A. frigida and P. acaulis at zero, light, medium and heavy sheep grazing, and proposed factors involved in the spatial associations between these two species along a grazing intensity gradient. Location: The Inner Mongolia Grassland Ecosystem Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Methods: Four grazing intensities were selected: zero, light (1.33 sheep/ha), medium (4.0 sheep/ha) and heavy (6.7 sheep/ha). After 13 years of grazing three 2 m × 2 m quadrats with 100 × 100 cells of size 2 cm × 2 cm were randomly selected in each treatment in July and August 2002. The presence of A. frigida and P. acaulis in each cell was recorded and the positions of the individuals were mapped using Cartesian coordinates in each quadrat. The small‐scale spatial associations between A. frigida or P. acaulis were quantified with the L12(d), J12(d) functions (both derived from K12(d), the former indicating the type of the spatial association, the latter indicating the strength of the spatial association), using Monte Carlo simulations. Results: A. frigida was negatively associated with P. acaulis at short distances (0–100 cm) under zero and light grazing, and negatively or independently under medium and heavy grazing. Increasing grazing intensities suppressed the peak negative associations. More intense grazing enhanced the tendency towards independent distribution of these two species. Conclusions: The small‐scale spatial associations between A. frigida and P. acaulis were significantly different at four different intensities of sheep grazing. Grazing disturbance, clonal growth habit of species, and interspecific competition are the main factors leading to a difference of spatial associations between these two species at different grazing intensities.  相似文献

Aims: To establish whether investigated subtyping methods could identify any specific characteristics that distinguish Swedish VTEC O157:H7 strains isolated from cattle farms associated with human enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) cases from cattle strains isolated in prevalence studies. Methods and Results: Strains (n = 32) isolated in a dairy herd prevalence study and strains isolated from farms associated with human cases (n = 13) were subjected to typing. Partial sequencing of the vtx2 genes could not identify any unique variants of vtx2 or vtx2c in strains associated with human cases. A specific variant of VTEC O157:H7, which was overrepresented among farms associated with human cases (P = 0·01), was by two different single‐nucleotide‐polymorphism (SNP) assays identified as clade 8, a subgroup of VTEC O157:H7 strains considered to be putatively hypervirulent. Multi‐locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) typing of all strains produced similar results as pulsed‐field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing regarding clustering of the strains, but MLVA distinguished slightly better among strains than PFGE. Conclusion: In Sweden, VTEC O157:H7 strains from the putatively hypervirulent clade 8 are overrepresented among isolates from cattle farms associated with human cases compared with VTEC O157:H7 strains isolated in prevalence studies. Significance and Impact of the Study: Real‐time PCR SNP typing for clade 8 can be used to identify cattle farms that are at higher risk of causing EHEC infections in humans.  相似文献

Aims: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the methods used in compost operations of small and medium‐sized poultry forms resulted in the production of an amendment free of foodborne pathogens. Methods and Results: Nine compost heaps on five South Carolina poultry farms were surveyed at different stages of the composting process. Compost samples were analysed for coliforms and enriched for Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes. The waste materials and composting practices differed among the surveyed farms. On two farms, new materials were added to heaps that had previously completed the active composting phase. Five compost heaps did not reach an internal temperature of 55°C, and c. 62% of all internal samples in the first composting phase contained moisture contents <40%. Escherichia coli was detected in 63% of the surface samples (n = 38) and 9·8% of the internal samples (n = 82) from the first composting phase, as compared with 16·7% of the surface samples (n = 12) and 0% internal samples (n = 24) from the second composting phase. Salmonella was detected in 26 and 6·1% of all surface and internal samples collected from heaps in the first composting phase, respectively, but was absent in all compost samples undergoing a second composting phase. The predominant Salmonella serotypes were Thompson, Montevideo and Anatum. Neither E. coli O157:H7 nor Lmonocytogenes was detected in any of the samples. Conclusions: Our results indicate that the conditions at the compost surface are suitable for pathogen survival, and the complete composting process can result in the elimination of pathogens in poultry wastes. Significance and Impact of the Study: This research provides information regarding the effectiveness of the composting practices and microbiological quality of poultry compost produced by small‐ and medium‐sized farms. Ensuring the safety of compost that may be applied to soils should be an integral part of preharvest food safety programme.  相似文献

Aims: To provide molecular epidemiological evidence of avian transmission of Escherichia coli O157:H7 between dairy farms in Ohio, this study was designed to identify genetic relatedness between isolates originating from bovine faecal samples and intestinal contents of European starlings captured on these farms. Methods and Results: During a three‐year period (2007–2009), cattle (n = 9000) and starlings (n = 430) on 150 different dairy farms in northern Ohio were sampled for the presence of E. coli O157:H7. Isolates were subjected to multiple‐locus variable‐nucleotide tandem repeat analysis (MLVA). Distinct allelic groups were identified on most farms; however, isolates clustering into three MLVA groups originated from both cattle and birds on different farms. Conclusions: Sharing of indistinguishable epidemiologically linked E. coli O157 MLVA subtypes between starlings and cattle on different farms supports the hypothesis that these birds contribute to the transmission of E. coli O157:H7 between dairy farms. Significance and Impact of Study: A continued need exists to identify and to improve preharvest measures for controlling E. coli O157:H7. Controlling wildlife intrusion, particularly European starlings, on livestock operations, may be an important strategy for reducing dissemination of E. coli O157:H7 between farms and thereby potentially decreasing the on‐farm prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 and enhancing the safety of the food supply.  相似文献

Most studies on the importance of the neighbourhood on a plant's risk ofherbivory have focused on palatable plants and how they are protected byunpalatable neighbours. This study examined the grazing intensity of arelatively unpalatable shrub, Buxus sempervirens, indifferent neighbours. Exactly 2683 plants of Buxussempervirens (including 172 controls) were sampled in 12 enclosedpastures belonging to 4 sheep farms. The enclosures were grazed at 3 differentseasons (spring, summer and autumn). Plants were divided in 4 age/hight classes(first year, < 4 cm, 4–10 cm, 10–40cm) and into 8 neighbourhoods. The first of these wascharacterisedby the absence of any plants within a radius of 5 cm around theBuxus individual and the 7 others by the identity of thedominant species in contact with the Buxus plant. Theintensity of grazing on the neighbouring plants were also recorded. At the endof one year's monitoring, 26.2% of Buxus sempervirensplants had been grazed. The proportion of plants grazed was significantlyhigherin spring than in the other two seasons. It decreased with increasing plantage.It was higher in neighbourhoods that were intensively grazed than in those withlight grazing. The proportion grazed in the absence of a neighbour plant wasintermediate between the previous two. The probability of a plant of aninvadingspecies being grazed is influenced by factors other than its life-historytraits. Some neighbourhoods consisting of unpalatable plants facilitate theestablishment of Buxus sempervirens by protecting theyoungplants from grazing, whereas other highly palatable neighbourhoods are readilygrazed by sheep, thus indirectly increasing the proportion of Buxussempervirens that are grazed. The young and short (< 4cm in height) Buxus plants, which are lessrecognisable by sheep, are most sensitive to the impact of grazing.  相似文献

Aim: To enhance the information pertaining to the epidemiology of a collection of 378 Listeria spp. isolates obtained from several food‐processing plants in Ireland over a 3‐ year period (2004–2007). Methods and results: The collection was characterized by pulsed‐field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The most prevalent pulse‐type was PFGE profile I (n = 14·5%) that consisted mainly of environmental Listeria spp. samples. Serotyping of 145 Listeria monocytogenes isolates was performed. The most common serovar was 1/2a and comprised 57·4% (n = 77) of the L. monocytogenes collection. The other serovars were as follows: 4b (14·1%, n = 19), 1/2b (9·7%, n = 13), 4c (4·4%, n = 6) and 1/2c (6·7%, n = 9), respectively. Eleven isolates were identified as non‐Listeria spp., the remaining ten L. monocytogenes isolates were nontypeable. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed the antibiotic that isolates displayed the most resistance to was gentamicin (5%) followed by sulfamethoxazole‐trimethoprim (2%), tetracycline and ciprofloxacin (1·5%). Conclusions: The subtyping has indicated the diversity of the Listeria spp. The presence of serotype 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b in both raw and cooked ready‐to‐eat food products is a public health concern, as these serotypes are frequently associated with foodborne outbreaks and sporadic cases of human listeriosis. In addition, the emergence of antimicrobial‐resistant L. monocytogenes isolates could have serious therapeutic consequences. Significance and Impact of Study: The molecular subtyping and the further characterization of these isolates may be valuable particularly in the context of a suspected common source outbreak in the future.  相似文献

Aim We aim to compare fine resolution pollen data from a former seasonal pasture with historical evidence for grazing and woodland use. We discuss the complexities and benefits of integrating qualitative and quantitative information, and the implications for studies of past wood–grazing interactions and their relevance to current conservation management. Location Corries is an abandoned farm township in Scotland's Western Highlands. Methods Two sources were used: (1) pollen evidence from a former seasonal pasture, analysed at c. 20‐year intervals and dated using 14C and 210Pb, provides a c. 1100‐year local vegetation and land‐use history; (2) written sources document resource regulation and changing socio‐economic circumstances at local to national scales over the last c. 400 years. Results Each source records woodland and livestock management at different spatial and temporal scales: written evidence provides a clearer understanding of general (estate) rather than farm‐scale changes, while small pollen basins record localized woodland–grazing dynamics, which can be difficult to extrapolate to the landscape scale. Both sources indicate a dynamic wood–grazing balance and together provide clearer evidence for incentives and drivers controlling this relationship. The first palynological phase of woodland incursion (ad c. 1210–1490) pre‐dates the surviving written records, but a second (ad c. 1680–1760) occurs during a period of increasing market value for cattle, when farmers may have increased grazing despite regulations to protect woods. The site is not representative of grazing intensification associated with the introduction of extensive sheep farming because the farmer protected the woods (ad c. 1760–1880) until they were cleared (ad c. 1880–1920) for quarrying (ad 1885–1904), which accounts for the limited palynological evidence for grazing. Main conclusions Written evidence for past stocking levels is too fragmentary and ambiguous to allow long‐term quantitative analysis, but a local historical context is important for interpreting local pollen records. Management decisions that determined grazing–woodland interactions were shaped by changing values, markets, agricultural practices and regulatory structures, which can result in nonlinear relationships between stocking levels and woodland continuity. Many woods were managed for multiple purposes in the past and promoting natural processes or pursuing pre‐anthropogenic baselines will result in the erosion of cultural features that have shaped present landscape values.  相似文献

A case-control study involving 24 case farms with at least one recent case of listeriosis and 28 matched control farms with no listeriosis cases was conducted to probe the transmission and ecology of Listeria monocytogenes on farms. A total of 528 fecal, 516 feed, and 1,012 environmental soil and water samples were cultured for L. monocytogenes. While the overall prevalence of L. monocytogenes in cattle case farms (24.4%) was similar to that in control farms (20.2%), small-ruminant (goat and sheep) farms showed a significantly (P < 0.0001) higher prevalence in case farms (32.9%) than in control farms (5.9%). EcoRI ribotyping of clinical (n = 17) and farm (n = 414) isolates differentiated 51 ribotypes. L. monocytogenes ribotypes isolated from clinical cases and fecal samples were more frequent in environmental than in feed samples, indicating that infected animals may contribute to L. monocytogenes dispersal into the farm environment. Ribotype DUP-1038B was significantly (P < 0.05) associated with fecal samples compared with farm environment and animal feedstuff samples. Ribotype DUP-1045A was significantly (P < 0.05) associated with soil compared to feces and with control farms compared to case farms. Our data indicate that (i) the epidemiology and transmission of L. monocytogenes differ between small-ruminant and cattle farms; (ii) cattle contribute to amplification and dispersal of L. monocytogenes into the farm environment, (iii) the bovine farm ecosystem maintains a high prevalence of L. monocytogenes, including subtypes linked to human listeriosis cases and outbreaks, and (iv) L. monocytogenes subtypes may differ in their abilities to infect animals and to survive in farm environments.  相似文献
