Sperm motility in fishes. (II) Effects of ions and osmolality: a review   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The spermatozoa of most fish species are immotile in the testis and seminal plasma. Therefore, motility is induced after the spermatozoa are released into the aqueous environment during natural reproduction or into the diluent during artificial reproduction. There are clear relationships between seminal plasma composition and osmolality and the duration of fish sperm motility. Various parameters such as ion concentrations (K+, Na+, and Ca2+), osmotic pressure, pH, temperature and dilution rate affect motility. In the present paper, we review the roles of these ions on sperm motility in Salmonidae, Cyprinidae, Acipenseridae and marine fishes, and their relationship with seminal plasma composition. Results in the literature show that: 1. K+ is a key ion controlling sperm motility in Salmonidae and Acipenseridae in combination with osmotic pressure; this control is more simple in other fish species: sperm motility is prevented when the osmotic pressure is high (Cyprinidae) or low (marine fishes) compared to that of the seminal fluid. 2. Cations (mostly divalent, such as Ca2+) are antagonistic with the inhibitory effect of K+ on sperm motility. 3. In many species, Ca2+ influx and K+ or Na+ efflux through specific ionic channels change the membrane potential and eventually lead to an increase in cAMP concentration in the cell, which constitutes the initiation signal for sperm motility in Salmonidae. 4. Media that are hyper- and hypo-osmotic relative to seminal fluid trigger sperm motility in marine and freshwater fishes, respectively. 5. The motility of fish spermatozoa is controlled through their sensitivity to osmolality and ion concentrations. This phenomenon is related to ionic channel activities in the membrane and governs the motility mechanisms of axonemes.  相似文献

Analysis of infracommunities and component communities of fish parasites in Lake Baikal has been conducted for the first time. It has been revealed that parasite infracommunities for the majority of Baikal fishes are weakly balanced and impoverished (the Berger-Parker Index is > 0.5; Evension is < 0.5; the Brillouin Index is < 1). The highest diversity and balance of the communities are characteristic for carnivorous fishes (Brachymystax lenok, Hucho taimen, Thymallus arcticus, Esox lucius, and Percafluviatilis). The component parasitic communities of Leuciscus leuciscus baicalensis, Rutilus rutilus, and Leocottus kesslerii are the most diverse in Lake Baikal since the Shennon index for L. leuciscus baicalensis, R. rutilus, and L. kesslerii is 2.4, for Paracotlus knerii--2.2, Limnocoitus godlewskii--2.3, Phoxinus phoxinus--2.1, Lota lota and Limnocuttus pallidus--1.9, P. fluviatilis--1.8, Leuciscus idus--1.8. The component parasitic communities of other fishes in Lake Baikal have low indices of biological diversity (H = 0.5-1.05, Smp is close to 1). A classification of mature and immature components of parasitic communities based on the ratio of specialist species and generalist species has been proposed. It is established that the component parasitic communities in sublitoral, profundal, and pseudoabyssal zones are mature, while in the littoral zone they are immature (impoverished and weakly balanced). The component parasitic communities in benthophagous fishes and predators are mature, in planktivorous fishes they are immature. The component parasitic communities are mature in the family Cyprinidae and immature in the families Coregonidae and Cottidae. The component parasitic communities of the Boreal Plain and Boreal Submountain faunal complexes are mature, but they are immature in Lake Baikal and Arctic freshwater complexes.  相似文献

The distribution of estuarine and freshwater fish species caught during the Swedish-Russian Expedition' Tundra Ecology–94'is presented. Thirteen sites along the Russian part of the Arctic Sea coast were sampled and a total of 21 fish species of the families Salmonidae, Coregonidae, Thymallidae, Osmeridae, Cyprinidae, Catostomidae, Balitoridae, Gadidae, Gasterosteidae, Percidae, Cottidae, Pleuronectidae were recorded. Fishes are the most speciose group of vertebrates, with more than 24 000 species. They are characterized by great diversity in ecology, morphology, life history, behaviour and physiology. Here, the phylogenetic patterns of orders in which polyploidy has been recorded are considered, with special reference to patterns of species richness and hybridization: these orders include such phylogenetically diverse taxa as the Lepidosireniformes (lungfish) and the Perciformes (perch). Examples, predominantly drawn from the Cyprinidae and Salmonidae, are used to illustrate attributes of polyploidy in fishes. It is concluded (i) that polyploidy may have been of considerable importance in the evolution of fishes, and (ii) that fishes, with their diverse life histories, represent a useful model system with which to test theories relating to the origin and consequences of polyploidy that have been derived from work on plants.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 431–442.  相似文献

Remains of fishes, turtles, birds, and mammals are described from the Upper Miocene (MN13) Shkodova Gora locality (Ukraine, Odessa Region), the only representative locality of Pontian large vertebrates in the northwestern Black Sea Region. Asiatic fish and avian taxa are recorded for the first time in the Upper Miocene of Europe. The Shkodova Gora ichthyofauna includes eight freshwater fish species (belonging to Acipenseridae, Cyprinidae, Siluridae, and Percidae). Taxa that have previously been recorded only in Western Siberia (Abramis bliccoides, Perca lepidopoma), eastern Kazakhstan, and the Altai Mountain (Rutilus tungurukensis) are revealed. Acipenser gueldenstaedtii is recorded for the first time in the Upper Miocene of Eastern Europe. The occurrence of the genus Ctenopharyngodon, a member of the Chinese plain faunal assemblage is of great interest. The Shkodova Gora avifauna (seven taxa) is mostly composed of waterfowl, including Phalacrocorax mongoliensis, which has previously been known only from the Lower Pliocene of Mongolia. The finding of Proanser major is the youngest record of this species in the fossil record. Mammals of the Shkodova Gora association include a hare resembling Trischizolagus dumitrescuae, Palaeoryx cf. pallasi, and Hipparion cf. moldavicum, which have not been mentioned among Pontian taxa of the northern Black Sea Region. Pontian paleolandscapes in the area of the Shkodova Gora locality are reconstructed.  相似文献

1. The long-term changes (1956–1998) in density and species composition of planktonic rotifers were studied at two sampling stations (I, II) of Lake Donghu, a shallow eutrophic Chinese Lake densely stocked with filter-feeding fishes. Annual average densities of rotifers increased with an increase in fish yield and eutrophication, whilst species number decreased from 82 in 1962–1963 to 62 in 1994–1998.
2. During 1962–98, some species such as Anuraeopsis fissa , Polyarthra spp. (including P. dolichoptera & P. vulgaris ) , Trichocerca pusilla and Synchaeta oblonga increased their percentage in abundance remarkably, whilst the proportion of Keratella cochlearis decreased at two relatively eutrophic stations from 19 to 4.2% at Station I and from 30 to 3.2% at Station II.
3. The high r max of A. fissa probably made it more successful than other rotifers under high predation pressure by planktivorous fish. The decrease in the K. cochlearis population might be attributed partly to predation by Cyclops vicinus .
4. Small rotifers were less vulnerable to fish predation than large-sized cladocerans. Decreases in cladocerans coincided with increases in rotifers, suggesting that the indirect effect of fish predation on cladocerans might have partly contributed to the population development of rotifers in Lake Donghu during recent decades.
5. We also conducted surveys (1994–1998) of seasonal dynamics of rotifers at four sampling stations (I–IV) which have varied in trophic status after fragmentation of the lake in the 1960s. A total of 75 species were identified at the four stations. Both densities and biomass of rotifers were considerably higher in the two more eutrophic stations than in the two less eutrophic stations. This indicates that the population increase of rotifers at Stations I and II during recent decades might be partly attributed to eutrophication of the lake water.  相似文献

Growth of white axial muscle fibres of ten species of freshwater teleosts from five families (Cyprinidae, Centrarchidae, Percidae, Salmonidae, Esocidae) possessing widely different growth rates and ultimate sizes have been studied. The dynamics of muscle increase (i.e. increase in fibre numbers and/or diameter) appears to determine the ability for rapid somatic growth and large ultimate size in teleosts. Thus, the largest and fastest growing species (smallmouth bass, lake whitefish, rainbow trout, muskellunge) show evidence of sustained recruitment of muscle fibres to a large size, in contrast to the smaller and slower growing species (bluntnose minnow, longnose dace). Pumpkinseed, bluegill and yellow perch are all intermediate in fibre growth dynamics, growth and ultimate size between the smaller and larger species. Moreover, the ability of teleosts to grow rapidly and attain a large ultimate size is dependent on the body length at which recruitment of new muscle fibres into the growing axial muscle ceases. The regression equation, y =– 0.29 + 2.26 ( x ), showing the relationship (r = 0.95) between ultimate body length, x , and fork length at cessation of recruitment, y , indicated that for these teleosts, recruitment tends to cease when the fork length reaches about 44% of the ultimate body length. Possible mechanisms to account for this relationship are proposed, and the role of the ultimate fibre diameter in posing limits to the ultimate size of the species is discussed.  相似文献

1. Local assemblage structure, from a deterministic perspective, is presumably dictated by the regional species pool as well as regulated by local factors. We examined the relationships of the regional species pool and local hydrological characteristics to local species richness of North American freshwater fishes using data sets collected during the National Water Quality Assessment program conducted by the United States Geological Survey. 2. We predicted that local species richness is ultimately constrained by the composition of the regional species pool and further associated with local hydrological factors. Moreover, we predicted that variation in local species richness within major families can be explained by different combinations of hydrological characteristics that represent lineage‐specific responses to the environment. 3. Daily discharge and regional and local species richness data were assembled from 41 stream localities across the United States. Multiple stepwise regressions were conducted to predict local species richness, based on regional species richness, mean discharge and hydrological characteristics quantified by nine variables characterising flow variability. Species richness at each site was calculated for the entire assemblage as well as within the four most species‐rich families in the data set (Catostomidae, Centrarchidae, Cyprinidae and Percidae). 4. Local species richness was best predicted by a combination of regional species richness and discharge magnitude when all species were considered. Regional species richness was a significant explanatory variable of local species richness for three of four families (Catostomidae, Centrarchidae, Cyprinidae), but not for Percidae. Local richness in Centrarchidae and Cyprinidae was positively correlated with temporal flow variability as well as high and low flow duration, respectively, while richness in Catostomidae and Percidae tended to be associated with discharge volume. In addition, local species richness for three of the four major families was positively correlated with species richness of the other families in the assemblage, potentially suggesting the influence of local habitat quality and heterogeneity. 5. Results suggest the importance of the combined influences of the regional species pool and local hydrological characteristics on local richness in freshwater fishes, with variation in richness within each family predicted by different characteristics of flow regimes.  相似文献

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary cation–anion difference (DCAD) on ruminal fermentation, total apparent digestibility, blood and renal metabolism of lactating dairy cows. Sixteen Holstein cows were distributed in four contemporary 4×4 Latin Square designs, which consisted of four periods of 21 days and four treatments according to DCAD: +290; +192; +98 and −71 milliequivalent (mEq)/kg dry matter (DM). Ruminal pH and concentrations of acetic and butyric acid increased linearly according to the increase of DCAD. Similarly, NDF total apparent digestibility linearly increased by 6.38% when DCAD increased from −71 to 290 mEq/kg DM [Y=65.90 (SE=2.37)+0.0167 (SE=0.0068)×DCAD (mEq/kg DM)]. Blood pH was also increased according to DCAD, which resulted in reduction of serum concentrations of Na, K and ionic calcium (iCa). To maintain the blood acid–base homeostasis, renal metabolism played an important role in controlling serum concentrations of Na and K, since the Na and K urinary excretion increased linearly by 89.69% and 46.06%, respectively, from −71 to 290 mEq/kg DM. Changes in acid–base balance of biological fluids may directly affect the mineral composition of milk, as milk concentrations of Na, K, iCa and chlorides were reduced according to blood pH increased. Thus, it can be concluded that the increase of DCAD raises the pH of ruminal fluid, NDF total apparent digestibility, and blood pH, and decreases the milk concentration of cationic minerals, as well as the efficiency of Na utilization to milk production.  相似文献

Concentration of osmotically active substances in the blood serum of the sturgeon A. guldenstaedti and sevruga A. stellatus from the central part of the Caspian Sea is practically equal to that in the sea water. In the blood serum of the sturgeon and the sevruga, concentration of Na is higher, whereas concentration of K and Mg is lower than in the sea water. Excretion of the urine with relatively low Mg concentration presumably indicated that being isoosmotic to the medium, the fishes studied in the Caspian Sea do not swallow the sea water. Electronmicroscopic studies indicate that with respect to poor development of membranous structures at the base of cells in the proximal tubuli, the kidney of the sturgeon and sevruga stands closer to freshwater than marine teleosts. These data show specific pattern of the osmotic and ionic regulation in the sturgeon, i.e. its isoosmotic type during migration to the Caspian Sea.  相似文献

A comparative study of species composition, abundance and spatial distribution of the rotifers of Neva Bay (Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea), between 1982–1993, was carried out. The rotifer fauna in the central basin of Neva Bay is determined by and originates in Lake Ladoga and is very similar to that of the Neva River. High turbidity and effect of winds affecting water residence time influence composition and density of rotifers in this shallow estuary. The importance of rotifer assemblages for evaluation of the quality of the estuary is discussed.  相似文献

The results of a long-term (1981?C2009) study on the gametogenesis and sexual cycles are given, and the state of gills and liver is characterized in Coregonidae, Cyprinidae, and Percidae fishes in waterbodies of the Ob??-Irtysh Basin considered intact and in those affected by anthropogenic influence to various degrees. The resistance to pollution of the branchial epithelium, liver, and gonads in fishes is shown to decrease in the following sequence: cyprinids ?? percids ?? coregonids ?? juvenile coregonids. Specific features of the composition and quantitative dynamics of primary sexual cells during the embryonic and early postembryonic periods are described in different coregonid species. The influence of weak pulsed electromagnetic fields on coregonid embryos and larvae has been analyzed with the purpose of developing methods for increasing the ecological plasticity under extreme natural and technogenic conditions.  相似文献

Two families of fishes, the Cyprinidae and Salmonidae, exhibit ultraviolet sensitivity and polarization sensitivity (i.e., differential sensitivity to the orientation of the electric field of polarized light). Both of these families possess a square arrangement of double cones and/or their dividing partitions in the centro-temporal retina, an area where polarization sensitivity has been tested for and found. To correlate the presence of an ordered cone mosaic in the centro-temporal retina with polarization sensitivity in ultraviolet-sensitive fishes, we examined the visual system of the common white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) and compared it to those of the above-mentioned families. We found that the common white sucker possesses four cone-mediated neural mechanisms similar to those in cyprinids and salmonids, but it does not exhibit polarization sensitivity. In addition, unlike cyprinids and salmonids, the common white sucker shows a random cone mosaic in the centro-temporal retina. These results suggest that polarization sensitivity in ultraviolet-sensitive fishes requires an ordered double-cone mosaic in this area of the retina. Accepted: 19 July 1997  相似文献

Lake Baikal is known for its high percentage of endemic fauna and flora. The most abundant sessile animal taxa in the littoral zone of Baikal are the photosymbiotic sponges. These endemic sponges are grouped to the family Lubomirskiidae and are separated, based on molecular data, from the cosmopolitan family Spongillidae Gray 1867. In the present review, recent data on the potential driving forces of the rapid speciation in Lake Baikal have been unified. Current data suggest that the genetic repertoire of the sponges was sufficiently large to cope with the major cold events, occurring 2.8–2.5 and 1.8–1.5 Ma. It is proposed that during those periods of climatic incisions founder populations were separated from the parental cosmopolitan sponge population and developed subsequently to the array of endemic species. To clarify whether the endemic sponge fauna is indeed restricted to Lake Baikal only or whether there exist related taxa in other lakes, a collection of sponges in the 750 km distant Lake Chagytai was performed. This lake harbours unexpectedly large populations of the endemic species Baikalospongia dzhegatajensis . As the habitat of the Lake Chagytai (algal habitat) differs strongly from that of Lake Baikal (rocky habitat), it is proposed that after the formation of the initial founder population in response to the climatic shift, subsequent speciation was driven by habitat differences.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Heterotrophic assimilation rates and concentrations of dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) were followed during diel studies in the eutrophic Lake Mossø, Lake Esrom and Lake øm in spring and summer in 1982. In all three lakes, three to four fold diel variations in concentrations and assimilation rates were measured. These fluctuations appeared to be iindependent of phytoplankton and bacteria production. Pools of DFAA varied from 380 nM (Lake Mossø) to 2430 nM (Lake ørn), with serine, glycine, alanine and ornithine as dominant free amino acids.
2. When similar water samples were incubated in a natural light-dark cycle or in total darkness, different pools of DFAA were measured in light and dark.
3. Decomposition of organic matter or zooplankton activity (rather than e.g. phytoplankton exudates) appear to be responsible for the concentration changes.
4. Observed discrepancies between simultaneous concentration changes and assimilation rates are discussed in relation to the applied tracer procedure and the concentration measurements.
5. Assimilation of DFAA sustained from 6% to 25% of the bacterial carbon requirement, corresponding to 2–12% of the phytoplankton production in the lakes.  相似文献

1.  Daphnia lumholtzi is a subtropical, Old World species which is rapidly spreading throughout reservoirs in the southern U.S.A. It was first recorded in Lake Texoma (Oklahoma–Texas) in September 1991.
2. Southern U.S. reservoirs typically have strong spatial and temporal gradients in temperature, conductivity, turbidity and in the distribution of organisms. Therefore, the present experiments examined the reproductive and moulting rates, and survival of D . lumholtzi in relation to extremes of food concentration, temperature, conductivity and turbidity.
3. Increases in temperature (range = 15–29 °C) and decreases in turbidity (range = 0.6–470 NTU) increased reproductive and moulting rates, whereas food concentration only affected the rate of reproduction, while conductivity had no effects. Survival was affected only by temperature.
4.  Daphnia lumholtzi tolerates high temperatures (27–30 °C) at which other cladocerans in Lake Texoma disappear. Therefore, D . lumholtzi may exploit resources in midsummer, when there are few potential competitors.  相似文献

Aim We evaluated variation in fish assemblages on the basis of taxonomic composition and functional groups based on Pleistocene glacial boundaries in the Ohio River basin. We tested for the influence of habitat and hydrology on fish assemblage variation. Location Ohio River basin of North America, including the states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Methods Fish collection sites were identified as Wisconsinan, pre‐Wisconsinan or unglaciated regions. Multivariate analyses, multi‐response permutation procedures, discriminant analysis and indicator species analyses were used to test whether taxonomic and functional assemblages were distinct among regions with varying glacial histories. Principal components analysis was used to identify habitat and water quality, as well as hydrological gradients that could be discerned by glacial region. Results We identified significant differences in both taxonomic and functional fish assemblage structure and habitat variation among regions that had different glaciation histories. The largest differences in taxonomic and functionally based fish communities were for unglaciated and pre‐Wisconsinan regions, while unglaciated and Wisconsinan regions were most similar. We correctly classified study regions in 71% and 60% of sites using taxonomy and functional analyses, respectively. Wisconsinan sites were characterized by Cyprinidae and Catostomidae assemblages with high abundances of tolerant fishes that tended to occur in habitats with reduced current velocity. Pre‐Wisconsinan sites were characterized by Cyprinidae, Catostomidae, Centrarchidae and Percidae families with increased abundances of intolerant fishes that tended to occur in habitats with coarser substrates and increased water velocity in streams of varying size. Unglaciated sites were characterized by Cyprinidae and Percidae families and were not closely associated with any habitat‐based functional group. Habitat in the unglaciated and pre‐Wisconsinan sites was significantly different from that in the Wisconsinan sites, which were characterized by increased channel structure and reduced stream size. Main conclusions Pleistocene glaciation events formed a lasting template of predictable regional differences in stream habitat and in the corresponding taxonomic and functional fish assemblage structures. While many factors impact the distribution of fishes, these results suggest that historical influences such as glaciation may be used to further explain the underlying mechanisms of spatial variation in fish assemblages.  相似文献
