Lobster diseases     
A number of diseases affecting lobsters (shell disease, fungal infections and a few selected parasitic occurrences) are described and have been discussed briefly. The bacterial disease, gaffkemia, is described in more detail and used insofar as possible to illustrate the interaction of a pathogen with a vulnerable crustacean host. Emphasis has been placed on the holistic approach stressing the capacity of lobsters and other crustaceans to cope with disease through flexible defense mechanisms, including on occasion the development of resistance.  相似文献

Calpains are calcium-modulated proteases which respond to Ca2+ signals by removing limited portions of protein substrates, thereby irreversibly modifying their function(s). Members of this protease family are present in a variety of organisms ranging from mammals to plants; some of them are ubiquitously expressed, while others are tissue specific. Although calpains are apparently involved in a multitude of physiological and pathological events, their functions are still poorly understood. In two cases, however, the alteration of a member of the calpain family has been clearly identified as being responsible for a human disease: the loss of function of calpain 3 causes limb girdle muscular dystrophy type 2A, and mutations in the gene coding for calpain 10 have been shown to correlate with non-insulin-dependent diabetes.  相似文献

More and more attention is paid to diseases such as internal transfer and brain malformation which are caused by the abnormal morphogenesis of cilia. These cilia-related diseases are divided into two categories: ciliopathy resulting from defects of primary cilia and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) caused by functional dysregulation of motile cilia. Cilia are widely distributed, and their related diseases can cover many human organs and tissues. Recent studies prove that primary cilia play a key role in maintaining homeostasis in the cardiovascular system. However, molecular mechanisms of cilia-related diseases remain elusive. Here, we reviewed recent research progresses on characteristics, molecular mechanisms and treatment methods of ciliopathy and PCD. Our review is beneficial to the further research on the pathogenesis and treatment strategies of cilia-related diseases.  相似文献

By convention, the term "mitochondrial diseases" refers to disorders of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, which is the only metabolic pathway in the cell that is under the dual control of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and the nuclear genome (nDNA). Therefore, a genetic classification of the mitochondrial diseases distinguishes disorders due to mutations in mtDNA, which are governed by the relatively lax rules of mitochondrial genetics, and disorders due to mutations in nDNA, which are governed by the stricter rules of mendelian genetics. Mutations in mtDNA can be divided into those that impair mitochondrial protein synthesis in toto and those that affect any one of the 13 respiratory chain subunits encoded by mtDNA. Essential clinical features for each group of diseases are reviewed. Disorders due to mutations in nDNA are more abundant not only because most respiratory chain subunits are nucleus-encoded but also because correct assembly and functioning of the respiratory chain require numerous steps, all of which are under the control of nDNA. These steps (and related diseases) include: (i) synthesis of assembly proteins; (ii) intergenomic signaling; (iii) mitochondrial importation of nDNA-encoded proteins; (iv) synthesis of inner mitochondrial membrane phospholipids; (v) mitochondrial motility and fission.  相似文献

A spectrum of blood-borne infectious agents is transmitted through transfusion of infected blood donated by apparently healthy and asymptomatic blood donors. The diversity of infectious agents includes hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1/2), human T-cell lymphotropic viruses (HTLV-I/II), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Parvovirus B19, West Nile Virus (WNV), Dengue virus, trypanosomiasis, malaria, and variant CJD. Several strategies are implemented to reduce the risk of transmitting these infectious agents by donor exclusion for clinical history of risk factors, screening for the serological markers of infections, and nucleic acid testing (NAT) by viral gene amplification for direct and sensitive detection of the known infectious agents. Consequently, transfusions are safer now than ever before and we have learnt how to mitigate risks of emerging infectious diseases such as West Nile, Chikungunya, and Dengue viruses.  相似文献
