Phytoextraction of Risk Elements by Willow and Poplar Trees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To characterize the phytoextraction efficiency of two clones of willow trees (Salix x smithiana Willd., Salix rubens) and two clones of poplar trees (Populus nigra x maximowiczii, Populus nigra Wolterson) were planted in contaminated soil (0.4–2.0 mg Cd.kg?1, 78–313 mg Zn.kg?1, 21.3–118 mg Cu.kg?1). Field experiment was carried out in Czech Republic. The study investigated their ability to accumulate heavy metals (Cd, Zn, and Cu) in harvestable plant parts. The poplars produced higher amount of biomass than willows. Both Salix clones accumulated higher amount of Cd, Zn and Cu in their biomass (maximum 6.8 mg Cd.kg?1, 909 mg Zn.kg?1, and 17.7 mg Cu.kg?1) compared to Populus clones (maximum 2.06 mg Cd.kg?1, 463 mg Zn.kg?1, and 11.8 mg Cu.kg?1). There were no significant differences between clones of individual species. BCs for Cd and Zn were greater than 1 (the highest in willow leaves). BCs values of Cu were very low. These results indicate that Salix is more suitable plant for phytoextraction of Cd and Zn than Populus. The Cu phytoextraction potential of Salix and Populus trees was not confirmed in this experiment due to low soil availability of this element.  相似文献

Poplar clones were studied for their phytoextraction capacity in the second growth cycle (6-year growth) on a site in the Belgian Campine region, which is contaminated with Cd and Zn via historic atmospheric deposition of nearby zinc smelter activities. The field trial revealed regrowth problems for some clones that could not be predicted in the first growth cycle. Four allometric relations were assessed for their capacity to predict biomass yield in the second growth cycle. A power function based on the shoot diameter best estimates the biomass production of poplar with R2 values between 0.94 and 0.98. The woody biomass yield ranged from 2.1 to 4.8 ton woody Dry Mass (DM) ha?1 y?1. The primary goal was to reduce soil concentrations of metals caused by phytoextraction. Nevertheless, increased metal concentrations were determined in the topsoil. This increase can partially be explained by the input of metals from deeper soil layers in the top soil through litterfall. The phytoextraction option with poplar short rotation coppice in this setup did not lead to the intended soil remediation in a reasonable time span. Therefore, harvest of the leaf biomass is put forward as a crucial part of the strategy for soil remediation through Cd/Zn phytoextraction.  相似文献

Data collected from 183 poplar and 102 willow SRC experimental plots, located in Central-North Italy, were subjected to stepwise regression analysis to acquire information on the environmental factors affecting plant survival and productivity in the first two-year rotation cycle. Nine Populus ×canadensis Mönch, eight P. deltoids Bartr. clones and four hybrids of Sali× matsudana Koidz were included in analysis. Independent variables were: annual and seasonal water availability (rainfall and irrigation), annual mean air temperature, soil texture, pH, N and organic matter content, planting density and management intensity. Dependent variables were: a) mean annual yield during the first two-year rotation cycle in tons per hectare per year of dry matter (Odt·ha?1·y?1); b) plant survival at the end of the second year from planting (%). Water availability resulted the main variable driving plant survival and biomass production in both poplar and willow clones. Water availability appeared to be the principal factor affecting the establishment of poplar and willow energy plantations in the Po valley. Possible variations in the rainfall regime consequent to climate changes could seriously influence land suitability to SRC. Experimental data also indicate that choice of planting density may increase the biomass yield during the first two-year especially with P. deltoides clones.  相似文献

Short rotation coppice (SRC) willow is an emerging cropping system in focus for production of biomass for energy. To increase production, the willow is commonly fertilized, but studies have shown differing effects of fertilization on biomass production, ranging from almost no response to considerable positive effects. Focus has also been on replacing mineral fertilizer with organic waste products, such as manure and sludge. However, the effect on biomass production and environmental impact of various dosage and types of fertilizer is not well described. Therefore we studied the environmental impacts of different doses of mineral fertilizer, manure and sewage sludge in a commercially grown SRC willow stand. We examined macro nutrient and heavy metal leaching rates and calculated element balances to evaluate the environmental impact. Growth responses were reported in a former paper (Sevel et al. “Fertilization of SRC Willow, I: Biomass Production Response” Bioenergy Research, 2013). Nitrogen leaching was generally low, between 1 and 7 kg N ha?1 year?1 when doses of up to 120 kg N ha?1 year?1 were applied. Higher doses of 240 and 360 kg N ha?1 as single applications caused leaching of 66 and 99 kg N ha?1 year?1, respectively, indicating N saturation of the system. Previous intensive farming including high doses of fertilizer may be responsible for a high soil N status and the high N leaching rates. However, moderate fertilization input could not compensate P and K exports with the biomass harvest. No elevated leaching of heavy metals was observed for any fertilization treatments and more cadmium than applied with the fertilizer was removed with the biomass from the system.  相似文献

Short rotation coppice (SRC) willow is a promising bioenergy feedstock. Fertilization is an integrated part of the production system, but knowledge about the effects in consecutive rotations is scarce. The objective of this study was to identify an appropriate fertilization regime for achieving high yields, reducing risks of nutrient leaching and maintaining the soil nutrient stocks in SRC willow on a former arable land. Ten different fertilization treatments were applied, with different application frequencies, fertilizer types and doses over three consecutive 2-year rotations. The biomass production was determined at harvest, soil solution samples were collected monthly, water fluxes were modelled using CoupModel and nutrient budgets were calculated. The unfertilized control had a mean biomass production of 8.3, 8.3 and 9.5 odt ha?1 year?1, respectively, in the three rotations. This indicated that nutrients were adequately available to maintain production for at least 6 years without fertilization. When adding 60 kg N ha?1 year?1, biomass production tended to be higher than the control, by 33% (p = 0.055), and the treatment where 360 kg N ha?1 rotation?1 was added, by 31% (p = 0.08). Treatments with one-time addition of 240 and 360 kg N ha?1 rotation?1 had significantly higher nitrogen leaching than all other treatments. Organic fertilizers did not increase biomass production nor N leaching significantly compared to the control, but nutrient budgets indicated a nutrient build-up in the soil. We concluded that application of 60 kg N ha?1 year?1 is recommendable, for achieving high biomass yields, low nitrogen leaching and maintenance of the soil nutrient stock.  相似文献

Three Cd and Zn hyperaccumulating plant species Noccaea caerulescens Noccaea praecox and Arabidopsis halleri (Brassicacceae) were cultivated in seven subsequent vegetation seasons in both pot and field conditions in soil highly contaminated with Cd, Pb, and Zn. The results confirmed the hyperaccumulation ability of both plant species, although A. halleri showed lower Cd uptake compared to N. caerulescens. Conversely, Pb phytoextraction was negligible for both species in this case. Because of the high variability in plant yield and element contents in the aboveground biomass of plants, great variation in Cd and Zn accumulation was observed during the experiment. The extraction ability in field conditions varied in the case of Cd from 0.2 to 2.9 kg ha?1 (N. caerulescens) and up to 0.15 kg ha?1 (A. halleri), and in the case of Zn from 0.2 to 6.4 kg ha?1 (N. caerulescens) and up to 13.8 kg.ha?1 (A. halleri). Taking into account the 20 cm root zone of the soil, the plants were able to extract up to 4.1% Cd and 0.2% Zn in one season. However, cropping measures should be optimized to improve and stabilize the long-term phytoextraction potential of these plants.  相似文献

The economics of willow biomass crops are strongly influenced by yield, production, and harvesting costs and the delivered price for biomass. Under current management practices, willow biomass crops with yields of 12 oven-dried metric tons (odt)?ha?1 year?1 and a delivered price of $60 odt?1 have an internal rate of return (IRR) of about 5.5 %. Yields below 9 odt ha?1 year?1 have an IRR <0 %. We examined the impact of different incentive programs on the returns from willow biomass crops and the hectares or tons of willow biomass supported across a range of yields. Incentive programs examined included establishment grants (EG), annual payments (AIP), low cost startup loans, and matching payments offered by two existing programs, the Conservation Resource Program (CRP) and more recently the Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP). EGs covering 75 % of the establishment costs provide high returns for growers on medium to high-productivity sites. Stand-alone AIPs with payments of $124 ha?1 year?1 paid over 5–15 years had little impact on profitability for growers but were costly for a funding agency. Low-cost loans with an interest rate of 2–4 % are one of the least expensive approaches ($1.3–6.6 odt?1) and improve profitability for medium- and high-yielding (8–16 odt ha?1 year?1) sites. A matching payment incentive providing $50 per odt delivered was the only individual incentive approach that made low-yielding sites (6 odt ha?1 year?1) profitable but was costly per odt compared to other incentives. Current CRP incentives made willow profitable across all productivity scenarios. The BCAP program generates higher profits for all productivity scenarios but comes at a higher cost. Effective financial incentives need to be well designed and monitored so that the target audience is reached and the intended policy goals are attained.  相似文献

Phytostabilization aims to reduce environmental and health risks arising from contaminated soil. To be economically attractive, plants used for phytostabilization should produce valuable biomass. This study investigated the biomass production and metal allocation to foliage and wood of willow (Salix viminalis L.), poplar (Populus monviso), birch (Betula pendula), and oak (Quercus robur) on five different soils contaminated with trace elements (TE), with varying high concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb as well as an uncontaminated control soil. In the treatment soils, the biomass was reduced in all species except oak. There was a significant negative correlation between biomass and foliar Cd and Zn concentrations, reaching up to 15 mg Cd kg?1 and 2000 mg Zn kg ?1 in willow leaves. Lead was the only TE with higher wood than foliage concentrations. The highest Pb accumulation occurred in birch with up to 135 mg kg ?1 in wood and 78 mg kg ?1 in foliage. Birch could be suitable for phytostabilization of soils with high Cd and Zn but low Pb concentrations, while poplars and willows could be used to stabilise soils with high Cu and Pb and low Zn and Cd concentrations.  相似文献

To assess the effects of propagule phenology and planting system on growth performance of three willow clones grown under different weeding regimes, a field experiment was performed in central Sweden 2014–2016. Freshly harvested (non-dormant) and cold-stored (dormant) cuttings (planted vertically) and billets (planted horizontally) from willow clones Tordis, Tora, and Jorr were planted in weeded and in unweeded plots. Sprouting was significantly higher for willows grown from non-dormant (74%) than dormant (58%) propagules and for cuttings (84%) compared with billets (42%). Survival was higher for willows from non-dormant propagules in weeded (71%) compared with unweeded (63%) plots, willows from dormant propagules in weeded (72%) compared with unweeded (60%) plots, and for willows from cuttings (93%) compared with billets (39%). During 2014–2016, aboveground biomass production was significantly higher for willows from cuttings (11.71 t DW ha?1) than from billets (6.13 t DW ha?1), grown in weeded (15.29 t DW ha?1) than in unweeded (2.55 t DW ha?1) plots, and differed significantly among willow clones (11.48, 9.27, and 6.01 t DW ha?1 for Tordis, Tora, and Jorr, respectively). In this study, (i) planting with cold-stored and freshly harvested willow propagules was equally successful and therefore cold storage could be potentially avoided and replaced with planting of freshly harvested propagules in early spring; however, (ii) in terms of measured growth performance parameters, willows grown from cuttings performed better than grown from billets; and (iii) weed competition significantly reduced survival and aboveground biomass production, confirming that weed control during establishment of willow is crucial.  相似文献

Effects of long-term applications (50, 100 and 200 m3 ha?1y?1) of pig and cow slurries on yield, botanical composition and nutrient content of herbage of an original perennial ryegrass sward were assessed in a three-cut silage system and compared with unamended and fertilized controls in the 36th year of the experiment. Cow slurry at 50 m3 ha?1 produced similar annual herbage DM yield to 200 kg ha?1 fertilizer N in 2006, whereas about 100 m3 ha?1 pig slurry were required to produce a similar amount of DM. The highest slurry application rate significantly influenced sward botanical composition without depressing DM yield. The principal invading species were creeping bent and meadow grasses (similar to findings at a previous assessment in 1981) except in the unamended control (which were common bent and Yorkshire fog). Perennial ryegrass remained a main species in plots receiving fertilizer (31 % annual DM yield) and low slurry rates (38 %) but declined to 3 % annual DM yield at the highest slurry rate where the ability of ryegrass to utilize slurry N and P may have been affected by chemically or physically induced deficiencies of other nutrients (e.g. Ca) or direct physical effects such as smothering.  相似文献

Fast-growing clones of Salix and Populus species have been studied for phytoremediation of soils contaminated by risk elements (REs) using short-rotation coppice plantations. Biomass yield, accumulation and removal of RE (Cd, Pb and Zn) by highly productive willow (S1—(Salix schwerinii × Salix viminalis) × S. viminalis, S2—Salix × smithiana) and poplar (P1—Populus maximowiczii × Populus nigra, P2—P. nigra) clones were investigated with and without sewage sludge (SS) application. The precise field experiment was established in April 2008 on moderately Cd-, Pb- and Zn-contaminated soil. Initially, shoots were harvested after four seasons in February 2012 and then after two more seasons in February 2014. The application of SS limited plant growth during the first years of the experiment in the majority of treatments, mainly due to weed competition and higher concentrations of available soil nutrients causing lower yields than those of control (C) treatments. Well-developed roots were able to take advantage of SS applications, and shoot yield was mainly higher in SS treatments in the second harvest, reaching up to 15 t dry matter (DM)?ha?1. Willows performed better than poplars. Application of SS reduced RE shoot concentrations compared to the C treatment. The removal of RE was significantly higher in the second harvest for all clones and elements (except the P2 clone), and the biomass yield was the major driving force for the amount of RE removed by shoots. Well-developed plantations of fast-growing trees showed better suitability for the phytoextraction of moderately contaminated soils for Cd and partly for Zn but not for Pb, which was less available to plants. From the four tested clones, S2 showed the best removal of Cd (up to 0.94 %) and Zn (up to 0.34 %) of the total soil element content, respectively, and this clone is a good candidate for phytoextraction. SS can be a suitable source of nutrients for Salix clones without any threat to the food chain in terms of biomass contamination, but its application to the soil can result in an increased incidence of some weeds during the first years of plantation.  相似文献

Ground rubber contains 15?C20 g Zn kg?1 but very low levels of Cd and could serve as an inexpensive byproduct Zn fertilizer. The aim of this investigation was to test Zn release in a soil treated with ground tire rubber and rubber ash compared with commercial Zn fertilizer and a laboratory grade zinc sulfate. A Zn-deficient soil was chosen from wheat fields in Isfahan province, central Iran, and the ground rubber, rubber ash and fertilizer-Zn and laboratory ZnSO4 were added at 0.5 and 2 mg Zn kg?1; 0.5 kg ha?1 would usually correct Zn deficiency in such pot tests. The soil DTPA-extractable Zn was then measured with time and the results were described examining first order, Elovich, power function and parabolic diffusion kinetics models. In the pot experiment, corn (Zea mays L.) plants were exposed to three rates of Zn (0, 20, 40 mg Zn kg?1) from two different sources (ZnSO4 and ground rubber). Ground rubber was applied as 2?C3 mm and <1 mm diameter particles. Zinc treatments were mixed with the soils before planting. At harvest, concentrations of Zn, Pb, and Cd in roots and shoots of corn were measured. Results showed that ground rubber and rubber ash significantly increased the concentration of DTPA-Zn in the soil and this increase was higher than achieved with the commercial Zn fertilizer. At the lower Zn application rate, Zn release followed parabolic diffusion, while at the higher rate the kinetics of release followed power function and Elovich models. There was an increase in Zn concentration of corn shoot and roots by adding of Zn regardless the source of applied Zn. With increase in the rate of rubber used, the shoot Zn uptake increased. The Pb concentration of shoot and Cd concentrations of shoot and roots were low (less than 0.02 mg kg?1) in all treatments. The results showed that the soil DTPA Zn decreases over time if the soil is amended with a soluble form of Zn whereas the reverse was observed if the Zn is added as ground rubber which only gradually transforms. Thus ground rubber and rubber ash offer strong value as Zn fertilizer for Zn deficient soils.  相似文献

Microbe-enhanced phytoremediation has been considered as a promising measure for the remediation of metal-contaminated soils. In this study, two bacterial strains JYX7 and JYX10 were isolated from rhizosphere soils of Polygonum pubescens grown in metal-polluted soil and identified as of Enterobacter sp. and Klebsiella sp. based on 16S rDNA sequences, respectively. JYX7 and JYX10 showed high Cd, Pb and Zn tolerance and increased water-soluble Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations in culture solution and metal-added soils. Two isolates produced plant growth-promoting substances such as indole acetic acid, siderophore, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic deaminase, and solubilized inorganic phosphate. Based upon their ability in metal tolerance and solubilization, two isolates were further studied for their effects on growth and accumulation of Cd, Pb, and Zn in Brassica napus (rape) by pot experiments. Rapes inoculated with JYX7 and JYX10 had significantly higher dry weights, concentrations and uptakes of Cd, Pb, Zn in both above-ground and root tissues than those without inoculation grown in soils amended with Cd (25 mg kg?1), Pb (200 mg kg?1) or Zn (200 mg kg?1). The present results demonstrated that JYX7 and JYX10 are valuable microorganism, which can improve the efficiency of phytoremediation in soils polluted by Cd, Pb, and Zn.  相似文献

Fertilization of SRC Willow,I: Biomass Production Response   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Short rotation coppice (SRC) willow is often regarded as one of the most promising crops to increase biomass production and thereby meet the growing demand for renewable energy. This study is based on the hypotheses that biomass production of SRC willow responds positively to increasing doses of nitrogen, and that similar biomass production response can be achieved by use of mineral fertilizer, sewage sludge and animal manure. A 2-year experiment was established with the clone Tordis grown on a sandy soil in northern Jutland, Denmark. The experiment included mineral fertilizer, sludge and manure, and treatments of different doses up to 360 kg nitrogen ha?1. The fertilization led to a modest but significant increase in biomass production. The largest production of 11.9 oven dried tons/ha/year was obtained for the application of 60 kg nitrogen ha?1 annually. Higher doses did not lead to increased biomass production; in fact, production seemed to decline with increasing fertilization application (not significant). We found no difference in production between different types of fertilizers. The limited response of the fertilization may be caused by a high fertility of the soil due to former agricultural fertilization. The number of sagging shoots increased significantly with increasing nitrogen dose.  相似文献

Aims

Effects of different soil amendments were investigated on methane (CH4) emission, soil quality parameters and rice productivity in irrigated paddy field of Bangladesh.

Methods

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with five treatments and three replications. The experimental treatments were urea (220 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) as a control, urea (170 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + sesbania biomass (2 t ha?1 ) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + azolla biomass (2 t ha?1) + cyanobacterial mixture 15 kg ha?1 silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + cattle manure compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer.

Results

The average of two growing seasons CH4 flux 132 kg ha?1 was recorded from the conventional urea (220 kg ha?1) with rice straw compost incorporated field plot followed by 126.7 (4 % reduction), 130.7 (1.5 % reduction), 116 (12 % reduction) and 126 (5 % reduction) kg CH4 flux ha?1 respectively, with rice straw compost, sesbania biomass, azolla anabaena and cattle manure compost in combination urea and silicate fertilizer applied plots. Rice grain yield was increased by 15 % and 10 % over the control (4.95 Mg ha?1) with silicate plus composted cattle manure and silicate plus azolla anabaena, respectively. Soil quality parameters such as soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, soil redox status and cations exchange capacity were improved with the added organic materials and azolla biofertilizer amendments with silicate slag and optimum urea application (170 kg ha?1) in paddy field.

Conclusion

Integrated application of silicate fertilizer, well composted organic manures and azolla biofertilizer could be an effective strategy to minimize the use of conventional urea fertilizer, reducing CH4 emissions, improving soil quality parameters and increasing rice productivity in subtropical countries like Bangladesh.  相似文献

The need to promote fertiliser use by African smallholder farmers to counteract the current decline in per capita food production is widely recognised. But soil heterogeneity results in variable responses of crops to fertilisers within single farms. We used existing databases on maize production under farmer (F-M) and researcher management (R-M) to analyse the effect of soil heterogeneity on the different components of nutrient use efficiency by maize growing on smallholder farms in western Kenya: nutrient availability, capture and conversion efficiencies and crop biomass partitioning. Subsequently, we used the simple model QUEFTS to calculate nutrient recovery efficiencies from the R-M plots and to calculate attainable yields with and without fertilisers based on measured soil properties across heterogeneous farms. The yield gap of maize between F-M and R-M varied from 0.5 to 3 t grain ha?1 season?1 across field types and localities. Poor fields under R-M yielded better than F-M, even without fertilisers. Such differences, of up to 1.1 t ha?1 greater yields under R-M conditions are attributable to improved agronomic management and germplasm. The relative response of maize to N–P–K fertilisers tended to decrease with increasing soil quality (soil C and extractable P), from a maximum of 4.4-fold to ?0.5-fold relative to the control. Soil heterogeneity affected resource use efficiencies mainly through effects on the efficiency of resource capture. Apparent recovery efficiencies varied between 0 and 70% for N, 0 and 15% for P, and 0 to 52% for K. Resource conversion efficiencies were less variable across fields and localities, with average values of 97 kg DM kg?1 N, 558 kg DM kg?1 P and 111 kg DM kg?1 K taken up. Using measured soil chemical properties QUEFTS over-estimated observed yields under F-M, indicating that variable crop performance within and across farms cannot be ascribed solely to soil nutrient availability. For the R-M plots QUEFTS predicted positive crop responses to application of 30 kg P ha?1 and 30 kg P ha?1 + 90 kg N ha?1 for a wide range of soil qualities, indicating that there is room to improve current crop productivity through fertiliser use. To ensure their efficient use in sub-Saharan Africa mineral fertilisers should be: (1) targeted to specific niches of soil fertility within heterogeneous farms; and (2) go hand-in-hand with the implementation of agronomic measures to improve their capture and utilisation.  相似文献

Biomass demand for energy will lead to utilization of marginal, low fertility soil. Application of fertilizer to such soil may increase switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) biomass production. In this three-way factorial field experiment, biomass yield response to potassium (K) fertilizer (0 and 68 kg?K?ha?1) on nitrogen (N)-sufficient and N-deficient switchgrass (0 and 135 kg?N?ha?1) was evaluated under two harvest systems. Harvest system included harvesting once per year after frost (December) and twice per year in summer (July) at boot stage and subsequent regrowth after frost. Under the one-cut system, there was no response to N or K only (13.4 Mg?ha?1) compared to no fertilizer (12.4 Mg?ha?1). Switchgrass receiving both N and K (14.6 Mg?ha?1) produced 18 % greater dry matter (DM) yield compared to no fertilizer check. Under the two-cut harvest system, N only (16.0 Mg?ha?1) or K only (14.1 Mg?ha?1) fertilizer produced similar DM to no fertilizer (15.1 Mg?ha?1). Switchgrass receiving both N and K in the two-cut system (19.2 Mg?ha?1) produced the greatest (P?<?0.05) DM yield, which was 32 % greater than switchgrass receiving both N and K in the one-cut system. Nutrient removal (biomass?×?nutrient concentration) was greatest in plots receiving both N and K, and the two-cut system had greater nutrient removal than the one-cut system. Based on these results, harvesting only once during winter months reduces nutrient removal in harvested biomass and requires less inorganic fertilizer for sustained yields from year to year compared to two-cut system.  相似文献

Woody biomass produced from short rotation coppice (SRC) poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.) is a bioenergy feedstock that can be grown widely across temperate landscapes and its use is likely to increase in future. Process‐based models are therefore required to predict current and future yield potential that are spatially resolved and can consider new genotypes and climates that will influence future yield. The development of a process‐based model for SRC poplar and willow, ForestGrowth‐SRC, is described and the ability of the model to predict SRC yield and water use efficiency (WUE) was evaluated. ForestGrowth‐SRC was parameterized from a process‐based model, ForestGrowth for high forest. The new model predicted annual above ground yield well for poplar (r2 = 0.91, RMSE = 1.46 ODT ha?1 yr?1) and willow (r2 = 0.85, RMSE = 1.53 ODT ha?1 yr?1), when compared with measured data from seven sites in contrasting climatic zones across the United Kingdom. Average modelled yields for poplar and willow were 10.3 and 9.0 ODT ha?1 yr?1, respectively, and interestingly, the model predicted a higher WUE for poplar than for willow: 9.5 and 5.5 g kg?1 respectively. Using regional mapped climate and soil inputs, modelled and measured yields for willow compared well (r2 = 0.58, RMSE = 1.27 ODT ha?1 yr?1), providing the first UK map of SRC yield, from a process‐based model. We suggest that the model can be used for predicting current and future SRC yields at a regional scale, highlighting important species and genotype choices with respect to water use efficiency and yield potential.  相似文献

Causes and implications of spatial variability in postfire tree density and understory plant cover for patterns of aboveground net primary production (ANPP) and leaf area index (LAI) were examined in ninety 11-year-old lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm.) stands across the landscape of Yellowstone National Park (YNP), Wyoming, USA. Field studies and aerial photography were used to address three questions: (1) What is the range and spatial pattern of lodgepole pine sapling density across the burned Yellowstone landscape and what factors best explain this variability? (2) How do ANPP and LAI vary across the landscape and is their variation explained by abiotic factors, sapling density, or both? (3) What is the predicted spatial pattern of ANPP and LAI across the burned Yellowstone landscape? Stand density spanned six orders of magnitude, ranging from zero to 535,000 saplings ha?1, and it decreased with increasing elevation and with increasing distance from unburned forest (r 2?=?0.37). Postfire densities mapped from 1:30,000 aerial photography revealed that 66% of the burned area had densities less than 5000 saplings ha?1 and approximately 25% had densities greater than 10,000 saplings ha?1; stand density varied spatially in a fine-grained mosaic. New allometric equations were developed to predict aboveground biomass, ANPP, and LAI of lodgepole pine saplings and the 25 most common herbaceous and shrub species in the burned forests. These allometrics were then used with field data on sapling size, sapling density, and percent cover of graminoid, forb, and shrub species to compute stand-level ANPP and LAI. Total ANPP averaged 2.8 Mg ha?1y?1 but ranged from 0.04 to 15.12 Mg ha?1y?1. Total LAI averaged 0.80 m2 m?2 and ranged from 0.01 to 6.87 m2 m?2. Variation in ANPP and LAI was explained by both sapling density and abiotic factors (elevation and soil class) (ANOVA, r 2?=?0.80); abiotic variables explained 51%–54% of this variation. The proportion of total ANPP contributed by herbaceous plants and shrubs declined sharply with increasing sapling density (r 2?=?0.72) and increased with elevation (r 2?=?0.36). However, total herbaceous productivity was always less than 2.7 Mg ha?1 y?1, and herbaceous productivity did not compensate for tree production when trees were sparse. When extrapolated to the landscape, 68% of the burned landscape was characterized by ANPP values less than 2.0 Mg ha?1y?1, 22% by values ranging from 2 to 4 Mg ha?1y?1, and the remaining 10% by values greater than 4 Mg ha?1y?1. The spatial patterns of ANPP and LAI were less heterogeneous than patterns of sapling density but still showed fine-grained variation in rates. For some ecosystem processes, postfire spatial heterogeneity within a successional stage may be similar in magnitude to the temporal variation observed through succession.  相似文献

Water and nutrient budgets were constructed for 13 low-lying peat polders in the Netherlands that varied in elevation relative to sea level (?0.2 to ?2.4 m below sea level), land use (7–70% of the total polder area covered by agriculture; largely dairy farming), and surface water prevalence (6–43%). Water balances were verified with chloride budgets and accepted when both met the criterion (total inflows ? total outflows)/(total inflows) <0.05. Apart from precipitation and evapotranspiration (overall means 913 vs. 600 mm), in- and outlet (171 vs. 420 mm) as well as in- and outward seepage (137 vs. 174 mm) were important items in the water budgets. Nutrient budgets, however, were dominated by terms related to agricultural land use (~60% of all inputs, 90% of N-removal and 80% of P removal) rather than water fluxes (8% and 5% of N and P inputs; 6 and 18% of outputs). After agriculture (200 kg N ha?1 y?1), mineralisation of the peat soil and atmospheric deposition appear to be important inputs (about 94 and 21 kg N ha?1 y?1). Major output terms were agricultural output (209 kg N ha?1 y?1) and denitrification (95 kg N ha?1 y?1). The average N budget was in balance (difference ~1 kg N ha?1 y?1), whereas P accumulated in most polders, particularly those under agriculture. The mean P surplus (15 kg P ha?1 y?1 in the 9 mainly agricultural polders) corresponds well with the accumulated difference observed elsewhere (700 kg P ha?1 in the upper 50 cm in a nature reserve versus 1400 under agriculture) after over 50 years of dairy farming. Bulk retention of N and P in these polders is taking place in the peat soil, through temporary sorption to the matrix and N is lost through denitrification. In a principal components analysis combining land use, landscape pattern, water balance and nutrient budget terms, the three-first principal components explained 63% of the variability. The first component (PC) correlated strongly with the percentage of land under agriculture (r = 0.82) and negatively with the percentage covered by surface water (r = ?0.74). Most input and output terms of the nitrogen budget also correlated with this PC. The second PC covaried distinctly with the total area of a polder (r = ?0.79) and human population density at municipality level (r = 0.75). Phosphorus loads in inlet and outlet water correlated with this PC. This suggests that the variability in nutrient budgets among polders is largely governed by agricultural land use.  相似文献
