The “Geita Gold Mine” (GGM) and “North Mara Gold Mines” (NMGM) have developed large quarries in the middle of fertile agricultural lands. Possible hazardous impact on the natural recourse has warranted a study on the trace element concentrations in soils, sediments, and natural waters. Generally, the study shows a great variation in type of elements and intensity of their spill to soils, sediments, and waters. We found indications of acid mine drainage (AMD) of trace metals near the GGM waste rock tailings, but the data are inconclusive. The environmental impact at NMGM was, on the other hand, more extensive. Severe trace element contamination of sediments and waters near one of the mining facilities managed by NMGM is connected to an accidental acid spill in 2009. However, we found strong indication that, in addition to the accident, leakage of alkaline wastewater into surface soils and free water took place from a large wastewater reservoir. We found very high concentrations, especially of As in sediments and water samples downside this reservoir. Water from several sites contained As concentration in the free water at more than one order of magnitude higher than the WHO drinking water recommendations. The chemical speciation of water samples indicated high fraction of Free Ion Activity (FIA) in several samples and the change in pH had a significant impact on the FIA. Due to extensive alkaline and acidic runoff from these sites, more information about hydrological transport routes and the chemical speciation of the free water is of great importance for assessing potential risk of these mines.  相似文献

Conventional sediment capping is a widely used technique where clean sediments are placed over contaminated sediments to reduce the migration of contaminants to the environment. A concern of the method is initial contaminant transport through the cap during the consolidation of the underlying disposed sediments. The current study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of the cap placed over the Malmøykalven confined disposal facility (CDF). The thickness of the soft disposed sediments reached 6 m in maximum, and was subject to extensive consolidation when the cap was placed. Vertical profiles of trace metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn) and the structure of the cap layer were studied in six gravity cores. The cap material was clearly distinguishable in the sediment cores, both visually and chemically. The results provided evidence that consolidation-induced pore water advection was able to transport fine particles (<63 µm) and organic material into the cap layer. Metal transport in the particulate phase was suggested to be the main transport process into the cap layer. The study shows the importance of an appropriate cap layer design to prevent any particle transport and to minimize the effects of consolidation-induced advective transport.  相似文献

贵州是我国汞矿的主要产地,其储量和产量均居全国首位,因此造成了该区域环境受到广泛的汞污染。从大的区域尺度上研究汞的污染分布特征对于了解该区域汞的污染现状有很好的指导作用。通过对贵州省汞污染源及各环境介质中汞污染情况的调查,首先阐释了万山、务川、滥木厂等几个主要汞矿区及燃煤和有机化工等行业的汞污染现状;并从大气、土壤和水体等环境介质方面综合分析了贵州地区汞的暴露水平与分布特征;采用ArcGIS 10.0描绘了各环境介质中总汞及甲基汞的分布特征。结果表明贵州省东北部与西南部汞矿区汞污染程度较高,大气、土壤和水体中的总汞分布呈明显的区域性,汞矿毗邻区域明显高于其他区域,矿区和城镇水体中甲基汞浓度较高,表明汞矿区和人为活动等因素影响水体中的甲基汞的分布。  相似文献

Severe polymetallic contamination is frequently observed in the mining communities of Bolivian Altiplano. We evaluated hair trace elements concentrations at the population level to characterise exposure profile in different contexts of contact with mining and metallurgical pollution. We sampled 242 children aged 7 to 12 years in schools from five Oruro districts located in different contexts of potential contamination. Hair trace elements concentrations were measured using ICP-MS (Pb, As, Hg, Cd, Sb, Sn, Bi, Ag, Ni, Se, Cu, Cr, Mn, Co and Zn). We compared concentration according to school areas and gender. Concentrations were markedly different depending on school areas. Children from schools near industrial areas were far more exposed to non essential elements than children from downtown and suburban schools, as well as the rural school. The most concentrated non-essential element was Pb (geometric means (SD): 1.6 (1.3) μg/g in rural school; 2.0 (2.3) μg/g in suburban school; 2.3 (3.0) μg/g in downtown school; 14.1 (2.7) μg/g in the mine school and 21.2 (3.3) μg/g in the smelter school). Boys showed higher levels for all non-essential elements while girls had higher levels of Zn. Hair trace elements concentrations highlighted the heterogeneity of exposure profiles, identifying the most contaminated districts.  相似文献

This study examined the distribution, susceptibility to viral infection and genetic diversity of Vibrio spp. in the coastal waters and sediments of British Columbia during summer (July and August). Abundances of presumptive Vibrio spp. ranged from 1.5 to 346 ml(-1) within the water column (1-291 m); whereas, abundances at the water-sediment interface were much higher (up to approximately 3 x 10(4)Vibrio spp. cc(-1)), and decreased with sediment depth (down to 30 cm). The genetic diversity of Vibrio spp. isolates was not tied to the location from which they originated and was only influenced in a minor way by the type of environment. However, the environment had a greater effect on phage-typing patterns. Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates from environments with high abundances of cells (sediments and oysters) were generally more susceptible to viral infection than those from the water column which were highly resistant. Therefore, although Vibrio spp. were widespread in the areas investigated, the results show that there is segregation of bacterial host strains in different environments, under differing selection pressures, which ultimately will affect in situ phage production.  相似文献

Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and production rates were examined along with sulfur biogeochemistry in Everglades sediments in March, July and December, 1995, as part of a large, multi-investigator study, the Aquatic Cycling of Mercury in the Everglades (ACME) project. The sites examined constitute a trophic gradient, generated from agricultural runoff, across the Everglades Nutrient Removal (ENR) Area, which is a re-constructed wetland, and Water Conservation Areas (WCA) 2A, 2B and 3 in the northern Everglades. MeHg concentrations and %MeHg (MeHg as a percent of total Hg) were lowest in the more eutrophic areas and highest in the more pristine areas in the south. MeHg concentrations ranged from <0.1 ng gdw-1 sediment in the ENR to 5 ng gdw-1 in WCA3 sediments; and MeHg constituted <0.2% of total Hg (HgT) in ENR, but up to about 2% in two sites in WCA2B and WCA3. Methylation rates in surficial sediments, estimated using tracer-level injections of203 Hg(II) into intact sediment cores, ranged from 0 to 0.12 d-1, or about 1 to 10 ng g-1 d-1when the per day values are multiplied by the ambient total Hg concentration. Methylation was generally maximal at or within centimeters of the sediment surface, and was never observed in water overlying cores. The spatial pattern of MeHg production generally matched that of MeHg concentration. The coincident distributions of MeHg and its production suggest that in situ production controls concentration, and that MeHg concentration can be used as an analog for MeHg production. In addition, the spatial pattern of MeHg in Everglades sediments matches that in biota, suggesting that MeHg bioaccumulation may be predominantly a function of the de novo methylation rate in surficial sediments.Sulfate concentrations in surficial pore waters (up to 400 µm), microbial sulfate-reduction rates (up to 800 nm cc-1 d-1) and resultant pore water sulfide concentrations (up to 300 µm) at the eutrophic northern sites were all high relative to most freshwater systems. All declined to the south, and sulfate concentrations in WCA2B and in central WCA3 resembled those in oligotrophic lakes (50–100 µm). MeHg concentration and production were inversely related to sulfate reduction rate and pore water sulfide. Control of MeHg production in the northern Everglades appears to mimic that in an estuary, where sulfate concentrations are high and where sulfide produced by microbial sulfate reduction inhibits MeHg production.  相似文献

Impacts of Mercury on Freshwater Fish-Eating Wildlife and Humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper reviews the current state of knowledge of the toxic effects of mercury on fish-eating birds, mammals, and humans associated with freshwater ecosystems, including new information on the relative risk of elevated methyl Hg exposure for fish-eating birds inhabiting aquatic ecosystems impacted by mining/smelting activities and areas characterized by high geological sources of Hg. The influence of various environmental conditions such as lake pH, DOC, and chemical speciation of Hg, on fish-Hg concentrations and Hg exposure in fish-eating wildlife, are discussed. Although a continuing global effort to decrease the release of this nonessential metal into the environment is warranted, Hg methylation and biomagnification may be limited in some environments due to chemical speciation of mercury in soils and sediments (e.g., HgS) and water quality conditions (e.g., high alkalinity and pH) that do not facilitate high methylation rates. We have shown such limitations for a lake where historic Hg mining greatly increased sediment-Hg loadings, yet Hg increases in small fish of various species are currently lower than expected, and top predators (bald eagles), despite having elevated concentrations of Hg in their blood compared with individuals from nearby lakes, exhibit no Hg-related reproductive impairment or other signs of MeHg intoxication. Recent epidemiological studies have shown that fish-eating human populations may be exposed to Hg sufficient to cause significant developmental effects. However, for humans, we conclude that the current USEPA reference dose for MeHg may be too restrictive, particularly for the less sensitive adult. The health status of indigenous peoples relying on the subsistence harvest of wild foods may be negatively affected by such restrictions.  相似文献

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are core membrane lipids of the Crenarchaeota. The structurally unusual GDGT crenarchaeol has been proposed as a taxonomically specific biomarker for the marine planktonic group I archaea. It is found ubiquitously in the marine water column and in sediments. In this work, samples of microbial community biomass were obtained from several alkaline and neutral-pH hot springs in Nevada, United States. Lipid extracts of these samples were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Each sample contained GDGTs, and among these compounds was crenarchaeol. The distribution of archaeal lipids in Nevada hot springs did not appear to correlate with temperature, as has been observed in the marine environment. Instead, a significant correlation with the concentration of bicarbonate was observed. Archaeal DNA was analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. All samples contained 16S rRNA gene sequences which were more strongly related to thermophilic crenarchaeota than to Cenarchaeum symbiosum, a marine nonthermophilic crenarchaeon. The occurrence of crenarchaeol in environments containing sequences affiliated with thermophilic crenarchaeota suggests a wide phenotypic distribution of this compound. The results also indicate that crenarchaeol can no longer be considered an exclusive biomarker for marine species.  相似文献

Genetic tools that identify species from trace DNA samples could supplement traditional survey methods to clarify distributional limits of rare species. For species with legal habitat protection, elevational limits of distributions are used to determine where management actions may affect endangered species. The endangered Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (Rana sierrae) generally is found down to 1,370 m, but in the Plumas National Forest, California, USA, there are a number of historical records below this elevation, resulting in protections extending to 1,067 m. This species is phenotypically similar to the foothill yellow-legged frog (R. boylii), with which it occasionally hybridizes. We used a combination of genetic methods to investigate the fine-scale distribution of the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog in the Plumas National Forest. We collected and analyzed environmental DNA (eDNA) samples from all accessible lower elevation sites with records of Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (n = 17) and swabbed 220 individuals for genetic identification from 2016–2018 to clarify the distribution of this endangered species. We created a climatic suitability model using the validated Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog records and current (1970–2000) climate models to assess additional highly suitable localities for Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog presence using eDNA capture. We did not confirm detection of Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog eDNA at any historical sites and identified all swabbed individuals from below 1,370 m (n = 144) as foothill yellow-legged frogs. We located a new Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog site (at 1,919 m) during surveys guided by the climatic suitability model. It does not appear after extensive eDNA and genetic sampling that the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog occurs below 1,370 m in this portion of their range at present. Our results show that eDNA sampling can be used as an effective management tool to evaluate historical locations and previously unknown suitable localities for current presence of a species of interest. © 2021 The Authors. Habitat enhancement for birds is frequently implemented during mine site restoration. Cliff‐nesting birds often colonize anthropogenic environments such as mining areas (aggregate sites and quarries for aggregate and cement production). Mining activity can compromise breeding success, causing cliff‐nesting birds to depend on the management and restoration of mining areas. The objective of our study is to assess the importance of mine site habitats for Sand Martin conservation and reconcile mining activity with breeding success in Mediterranean environments. We studied Sand Martin breeding habitat preferences in mining areas at three spatial scales. At the mining site scale, we compared 10 mining sites with Sand Martin burrows with 19 mining sites without burrows. At the colony scale (vertical structures with colonies), we evaluated the relationships between the number of breeding pairs, number of burrows, and colony characteristics within 30 distinct Sand Martin colonies. At the burrow scale, we compared the characteristics of the available vertical structure with the areas used by Sand Martins. At the mining site scale, Sand Martins preferred more surface of water bodies, shorter distances to flowing water, older sites, and mining sites which produce aggregates instead of cement. At the colony scale, Sand Martins preferred southwest orientations and stockpiles to vertical extraction faces. At the burrow scale, birds preferred the most vertical areas of the face. Our results support the need for effective habitat restoration and improved management for more effective Sand Martin conservation within mining areas. Simple interventions can enhance habitat quality and conservation of cliff‐nesting birds.  相似文献

The Middle Oxfordian formations of the eastern edge of the Paris Basin (France) contain mostly shallow-marine carbonate sediments. A detailed sedimentological study of the Pagny-sur-Meuse section reveals five major environments that make up a depositional profile succession grading from tidal-flat to distal lagoon/oolithic shoal. Stratigraphic cycles were established and illustrate variations of the A/S ratio (accommodation rate/sedimentation rate) and hence variations of accommodation space. Geochemical analyses (Sr, Mg, Fe, and Mn) have been conducted along a part of the section. Statistic analysis of the geochemical data (box diagrams and principal component analysis, PCA) are used to investigate similarities between the variations of trace element contents and depositional environments. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to test whether the amounts of trace elements are related to the depositional environments. The relationship is highly significant for Sr, Fe, and Mn. A number of a posteriori tests are performed with this ANOVA to compare the geochemical data for each environment. Tidal-flats and distal lagoon/oolithic shoal transition are the most significantly discriminated environments. Differences among the lagoonal environments are less obvious. Despite (1) an open diagenetic system that explains the low Sr values and (2) the possible influence of clays on Fe–Mn contents in the upper part of the section, some of the variations in Sr and Fe–Mn seem to reflect changes in depositional environment. A number of hypotheses are proposed about the relations between trace elements and paleoenvironmental parameter records: Sr contents may illustrate variations of paleosalinity in depositional environments, whereas Fe and Mn contents seem to record variations of specific low detrital inputs coming from isolated islands submitted to pedogenesis. Low Sr content coupled with relatively high Fe and Mn contents is indicative of low salinity environment near subaerially exposed islands, located in the proximal part of a reconstructed theoretical depositional profile. Conversely, high Sr content coupled with relatively low Fe and Mn contents reflect a more open marine environment in the distal part of the same profile. Such analysis based on trace element geochemistry does not constitute a model but it shows that Sr, Fe, and Mn can partially record indications about paleoenvironmental conditions in shallow-marine carbonates.  相似文献

A sustained effort in biochemical, biophysical and physiological research is devoted to the characterization of the transfer of ions and molecules between biological membranes and their aqueous environment. The transported molecules include compounds with substantial structural and physico-chemical differences. It is widely assumed that the biological activity of these compounds arises as a result of binding to active sites in membrane-bound proteins, while the lipid background is considered to play a more passive role. In the simple, symmetric, four-state carrier model for transport of a single solute, transport is down the concentration gradient of that solute. There is currently a wide variety of methods used to evaluate soil contamination. We present a discussion of the advantages and limitations of different soil contamination assessment methods. In this study, we analyzed seven trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn) that are indicators of soil contamination in Dexing, a city in China that is famous for its vast nonferrous mineral resources in China, using enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), pollution index (PI), and principal component analysis (PCA). The three contamination indices and PCA were then mapped to understand the status and trends of soil contamination in this region. The entire study area is strongly enriched in Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, especially in areas near mine sites. As and Hg were also present in high concentrations in urban areas. Results indicated that Cr in this area originated from both anthropogenic and natural sources. PCA combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) was successfully used to discriminate between natural and anthropogenic trace metals.  相似文献

In coastal environments, plants are used for phytoremediation of contamination. Organic and inorganic contaminants may be due to natural and/or anthropogenic sources. The aim of this study is to compare inorganic (trace metal) and organic (PAH) contamination in Posidonia oceanica and to analyse the relationship between these types of pollutants indeed very few studies have been interested in their correlations and common sources. P. oceanica leaves were collected in two sites exhibiting different levels of human-induced pressure. Higher values were recorded in the more polluted site (Toulon) for trace metals (Ag, Hg, Pb) as well as for PAHs (Medium Molecular Weight and High Molecular Weight) due to the presence of the city and/or harbour in proximity. For the first time in a coastal environment, correlations were observed between metals and PAHs.  相似文献

Worldwide Late Cambrian—Silurian lithofacies patterns indicate that the platforms of that time were sites of accumulation of two essentially different rocks suites: the platform carbonate rocks and the platform terrigenous rocks. Most of the platform rocks accumulated as sediments in shallow marine environments similar to those of the present but far more widely spread.Present-day marine benthic faunas are distributed in depth zones which are primarily controlled by temperature. Faunas tend to occur in substrate-related discrete clusters (communities) within each life zone; similar substrates in different depth zones commonly have different faunal associations. Individual phyletic stocks may encounter environmental optimum or near-optimum conditions in certain areas, that commonly are revealed by an abundance of species and individuals within species in each stock. Environmental optimum conditions depend upon availability of food that may be utilized, modes of feeding of the animals present, water motion, and substrate, among other factors. Organisms in past seas were distributed in patterns similar to those of the present.Carbonate platforms were particularly widespread during the latest Cambrian—Early Ordovician. Intertidal environments spread widely across those platforms during that time and characteristic faunal associations developed in them. Saukiid and related tribolites dominated latest Cambrian carbonate platform intertidal faunas. The Early Ordovician carbonate platform intertidal was dominated by archeogastropod-nautiloid cephalopod faunas. These animals were joined by tabulate corals and certain brachiopods during the latter part of the Ordovician and Silurian as prominent faunal elements in the carbonate platform intertidal—shallow subtidal. Cruziana and related trace fossils, bivalves, and certain tribolites (notably homalonotids and dalmanitids) dominated most terrigenous platform intertidal—shallow subtidal faunas of the Ordovician and Silurian.Articulate brachiopods (primarily orthoids, strophomenoids, and rhynchonelloids) appear to have been relatively prominent during the Early Ordovician in shallow subtidal environments on both carbonate and terrigenous platforms and to have spread down the bathymetric gradient into increasingly deeper subtidal areas of both platforms during the latter part of the Ordovician. Tribolites dominated faunas in relatively moderate to deep subtidal environments on both platforms during the early part of the Ordovician. They were gradually replaced by brachiopods in first the shallower, and later the deeper subtidal as dominant members of the faunas. Brachiopods (primarily pentameroids and spiriferoids) dominated nearly all Silurian warm-water subtidal environments from the shallow subtidal to the edges of the platforms.Platform uplifts in the Middle Ordovician and glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations in the Late Ordovician caused environmental changes across the platforms that were accompanied by marked replacements among marine benthic faunas in all environments. The distribution of Ordovician carbonate platforms and glacial deposits suggests that an Ordovician polar region may have been close to present-day equatorial Africa and that Ordovician warm temperate-tropical regions lay close to the present-day North Pole.  相似文献

Clinically important antibiotic resistance genes were detected in culturable bacteria and class 1 integron gene cassettes recovered from suspended floc, a significant aquatic repository for microorganisms and trace elements, across freshwater systems variably impacted by anthropogenic activities. Antibiotic resistance gene cassettes in floc total community DNA differed appreciably in number and type from genes detected in bacteria cultured from floc. The number of floc antibiotic resistance gene cassette types detected across sites was positively correlated with total (the sum of Ag, As, Cu, and Pb) trace element concentrations in aqueous solution and in a component of floc readily accessible to bacteria. In particular, concentrations of Cu and Pb in the floc component were positively correlated with floc resistance gene cassette diversity. Collectively, these results identify suspended floc as an important reservoir, distinct from bulk water and bed sediment, for antibiotic resistance in aquatic environments ranging from heavily impacted urban sites to remote areas of nature reserves and indicate that trace elements, particularly Cu and Pb, are geochemical markers of resistance diversity in this environmental reservoir. The increase in contamination of global water supplies suggests that aquatic environments will become an even more important reservoir of clinically important antibiotic resistance in the future.  相似文献

The trace elements contained in atmospheric deposition have long been of environmental and human health concern. The concentrations of trace elements in bulk deposition are usually monitored using traditional methods, which are often complemented by use of the simpler and less expensive moss bag technique. However, some theoretical aspects of the latter technique are still not well understood, such as the relationship between the levels of trace elements accumulated in moss and the concentrations of these in the atmosphere. In the present study, the correlation between the concentrations of trace elements (i.e., Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn) in devitalized moss bags (Sphagnum denticulatum) and bulk deposition was studied during 12 exposure periods at 21 sampling sites (SS) affected by different degrees of contamination. Most of the significant correlations involved Cd and to a lesser extent Cu and Zn; however, no significant correlations were found for Pb and Hg. The environmental conditions and particularly the abundance of precipitation are the main causes of the absence of correlations in some cases, presumably because of the loss of elements via washing. Thus, although the moss bag technique is a very useful and economical environmental tool, the limits of the method must always be borne in mind.  相似文献

A bioaccumulation study was performed on Lake Averno, a volcanic lake close to Naples (southern Italy), to ascertain the degree of trace element contamination. Good information to assess spatial gradients of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, V and Zn contamination was provided by analysing Phragmites communis roots, Najas marina shoots, Potamogeton pectinatus leaves and surface sediments of Lake Averno collected from July 1999 to July 2000 at three sites in the littoral zone. The highest concentrations of the trace elements were measured in sediments and plants from the site where a nearby sewage outfall channel reaches the lake, the lowest at the site below woodland. Significant correlations were found between sediment and plant element concentrations. For almost all the elements, values 2–4-fold higher were found for the site affected by the sewage effluent. Among the plant species, Ph. communis is the most useful species in biomonitoring studies due to its ability to accumulate trace elements in the roots and its collectability throughout the year. Given the absence of systematic water quality monitoring, trace elements in plants, rather than sediments, provide a cost-effective means for assessing trace element accumulation in aquatic systems during plant organ lifespan.  相似文献
