Flexibilities in Lower Mississippian crinoid stalks were inferred from preserved postures and shown not to conform with predictions of a cantilever beam model. Flexibilities were not correlated with hard-part characters such as stalk diameter, stalk length, or columnal height. The lack of correspondence between the predictions of the cantilever model and observed flexibilities implies that the most likely control of stalk flexibility is the ligament, more specifically, its non-constant, mutable properties. Although a few Lower Mississippian crinoids, such as Gilbertsocrinus, Platycrinites , and Camptocrinus , have enhanced flexibility achieved by radical modifications of columnal facet morphology, this study has failed to identify any general morphological characters that consistently predict flexibility. It appears that skeletal morphology is a poor guide to stalk flexibility; mutable collagenous tissue is the key. The key role played by turbulence in the environment of plankton and larval fish populations has become appreciated in recent years. In particular, the turbulent enhancement of encounter rates between different species of microorganisms, either swimming or passively advected by the flow, is well established. However, most of the current modelling approaches are rather ad hoc, giving rise to ambiguities in the specification of certain key parameters. In this paper, the encounter problem in a turbulent flow of large Reynolds number is re-examined from first principles and a number of new formulae will be established for different swimming strategies. The key innovation is the proposal of a model form for the conditional joint probability density function of predator and prey velocities when the organisms are separated by their given contact radius, R. Particular attention will be paid to the case when a microorganism follows a random trajectory, due to a combination of its own swimming and the action of the flow. The theoretical predictions are subsequently tested against corresponding quantities derived from a series of kinematic simulations of a turbulent-like flow field. Good agreement is demonstrated between the predictions and simulations.  相似文献

An understanding of the interaction between acoustic waves and cancellous bone is needed in order to realize the full clinical potential of ultrasonic bone measurements. Scattering is likely to be of central importance but has received little attention to date. In this study, we adopted a theoretical model from the literature in which scattering was assumed to be proportional to the mean fluctuation in sound speed, and bone was considered to be a random continuum containing identical scatterers. The model required knowledge only of sound speeds in bone and marrow, porosity, and scatter size. Predicted attenuation, broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) and backscatter coefficient were obtained for a range of porosities and scatterer sizes, and were found to be comparable to published values for cancellous bone. Trends in predicted BUA with porosity agreed with previous experimental observations. All three predicted acoustic parameters showed a non-linear dependence on scatterer size which was independent of porosity. These data confirm the value of the scattering approach and provide the first quantitative predictions of the independent influence of structure and porosity on bone acoustic properties.  相似文献

Small, benthic, cryptic fishes represent a species-rich guild on marine substrates. Most of them are micropredators that feed on crustaceans that are often smaller than 1 mm. Typical examples are seahorses and pipefishes (Syngnathidae), most gobies (Gobiidae), dragonets (Callionymidae) and triplefins (Tripterygiidae). Previous work on the yellow black-headed triplefin Tripterygion delaisi demonstrated that it actively redirects downwelling sunlight sideways using its iris and can use this to locally illuminate objects of interest. We call this form of active sensing using light “diurnal active photolocation”. Visual modelling predicted that light redirection can be sufficient to induce a perceivable change in luminance in the eyes of one of its prey species, a cryptic gammarid crustacean (Cheirocratus sp.), over distances of 1–2 cm. Empirical validation, however, was not possible because measurements of predation distances have not been quantified for free-ranging, small, benthic fishes before. Here, we present interaction distances measured from videos of T. delaisi approaching and striking at prey in the field. Out of 160 recordings, we were able to quantify 78 prey approaching distances and 100 striking distances. Approaching distances ranged from 2.1 to 4.1 cm (interquartile range, IQR) and involved one to five approaching steps before the actual strike occurred. The distance over which the final strike took place varied from 0.7 to 1.6 cm (IQR). Both approaching and striking distances increased with fish body size. We conclude that most approaching sequences started too far away to be explained by prey detection through light redirection. Striking distances, however, fell well with the distances predicted by the model. We conclude that if diurnal active photolocation plays a role in prey detection, it is during the final decision whether to strike or not.  相似文献

Theoretical predictions of internal bone remodeling around an elliptical hole are studied. The internal remodeling theory due to Cowin and Hegedus is employed. The bone is modeled as an initially homogeneous adaptive elastic plate with an elliptical hole under a superposed steady compressive load. It is shown that there will exist a final inhomogeneous remodeling distribution around the hole that will disappear away from the hole. The remodeling is such that the compressive stress concentration causes the bone structure to evolve to one of greater density and stiffer elastic coefficients. The speed of remodeling around the hole and its variation with respect to distance is investigated and discussed. It is shown that the rate of bone reinforcement in the area of compressive stress concentration is much higher than the rate of bone resorption in the area of existing tensile stress. Special cases of a circular hole and vertical and horizontal slots are studied and discussed.  相似文献

A theory of surface bone remodeling is extended to include the effects of shearing strains as well as normal strains. It is shown that the surface velocity can only depend upon the square of shearing strains, but that it can be linear as well as quadratic in the normal strains. The theory is applied to predict the surface bone remodeling in the diaphysis of a long bone under combined axial and torsional loading. In the general case the diaphysis of the long bone is modeled as a hollow thin-walled cylinder of arbitrary cross-section and, in a special case, as a right circular thin-walled tube. It is shown here that if a thin-walled right circular cylinder capable of surface remodeling is subjected to an axial compressive load and a twisting torque, then the effect of increasing the torque is the same as the effect of decreasing the axial compressive load, namely the mean radius of the cross-section increases and the wall width thins. Conversely, the effect of reducing the torque is the same as the effect of increasing the axial compressive load, namely the mean radius of the cross-section decreases and the wall width thickens.  相似文献

The paper draws together a large and scattered body of empirical evidence concerning the prevalence of snail infection with schistosome parasites in field situations, the duration of the latent period of infection in snails (and its dependence on temperature), and the mortality rates of infected and uninfected snails in field and laboratory conditions. A review and synthesis of quantitative data on the population biology of schistosome infections within the molluscan host is attempted and observed patterns of infection are compared with predictions of a schistosomiasis model developed by May (1977) which incorporates differential snail mortality (between infected and uninfected snails) and latent periods of infection. It is suggested that the low levels of prevalence within snail populations in endemic areas of schistosomiasis are closely associated with high rates of infected snail mortality and the duration of the latent period of infection within the mollusc. In certain instances, the expected life-span of an infected snail may be less than the duration of the latent period of infection. Such patterns generate very low levels of parasite prevalence. A new age prevalence model for schistosome infections within snail populations is developed and its predictions compared with observed patterns. The implications of this study of observed and predicted patterns of snail infection within molluscan populations are discussed in relation to the overall transmission dynamics of schistosomiasis.  相似文献

Synopsis We tested the explanatory value of two hypotheses reviewed by Lack (1954) in the maintenance of brood size in free-ranging convict cichlidsCichlasoma nigrofasciatum: (1) physiological constraints on egg production, and (2) behavioural constraints imposed by brood defence. Number of free-swimming young in 13 experimental (E) broods was augmented to the upper limit of the size distribution of natural broods (150 young); 18 control (C) broods were handled in the same way but brood size was not changed (mean ± SE = 69.5 ± 11.0). E and C brood sizes were measured at 5 day intervals. At day 20 (just before independence from parental care), 50.3 ± 9.4 (n = 9) young remained in E broods and 30.8 ± 7.8 (n = 8) young remained in C broods (p> 0.05). Offspring number did not differ significantly (p> 0.05) between C and E broods after day 10. Mean growth rate of offspring was significantly lower in E broods than in C broods, perhaps in response to increased density of young in the former. Both the convergence of offspring number in E and C broods and suppression of growth in E broods support a behavioural constraint; that during the first 10 days in which the young are free swimming, two parents are unable to defend large broods as successfully as small broods. A trade-off exists in parental investment between current and future reproduction. Extra-parental investment in current reproduction (eggs) does not result in an increased number of young at independence, therefore a behavioural constraint during brood defence should stabilize the evolution of clutch size.  相似文献

Numerous ternary substrate cycles are metabolically operative in vivo. The relative concentrations of the interconverted substrates are generally correlated with different physiological states. These cycles often include reversible and/or substrate-inhibited enzymic steps. The switch between one steady state (metabolic state) and another may be the consequence of either the effect of an exogeneous metabolite or signal, or the alteration of a cycle internal parameter. The interpretation of results obtained with currently designed experiments on substrate cycles seldom take into account the very dynamic and regulatory properties inherent in the cyclic and often autocatalytic nature of the pathway. In the present report, the various dynamic properties of a model ternary substrate cycle, bounded by moiety conservation, are investigated. Three situations with increasing complexity are considered: (i) the three enzymes are michaelian and catalyse irreversible steps; (ii) one of the enzymic steps is reversible; and (iii) one step is subjected to a destabilizing factor, i.e. inhibition by excess of substrate. The behavior(s) of the whole cycle is mainly controlled by four parameters, that is, ST, the total concentration of the substrate pool, and the three enzyme maximal velocities, VMi (i = 1,2,3). As ST (= S1 + S2 + S3) is constant, the Si steady-state concentrations (stable or not) can be represented in barycentric coordinates in a triangle (simplex). This convenient representation allows us to predict the different states of the system when one enzyme maximal activity is varied. The steady-state concentration dependencies as a function of one or several parameters may be either monostable (possibility of zero-order ultrasensitivity) or bistable (with or without reversible transitions). The physiological and experimental relevances of these observations are emphasized.  相似文献

Theory shows that the presence of behavioural switching between alternative resources can contribute to coexistence when competitors differ in trophic-related traits. In addition, switching can generate disruptive selection on such traits in a low-diversity community, increasing the number of species. Both of these processes should produce communities in which species differ in their values of the trophic trait, and display corresponding differences in the time-course of their switching from one resource to another. Here we present evidence for widespread switching behaviour for a diverse Mediterranean scrubland bird community. We show that species differ in a beak character related to their relative use of insect and fruit resource channels, and that the timing of switching is correlated with the relative use of resources. These patterns are consistent with theoretical predictions, suggesting a possible role of switching behaviour in promoting avian coexistence and diversification.  相似文献

Recently diverged taxa may continue to exchange genes. A number of models of speciation with gene flow propose that the frequency of gene exchange will be lower in genomic regions of low recombination and that these regions will therefore be more differentiated. However, several population-genetic models that focus on selection at linked sites also predict greater differentiation in regions of low recombination simply as a result of faster sorting of ancestral alleles even in the absence of gene flow. Moreover, identifying the actual amount of gene flow from patterns of genetic variation is tricky, because both ancestral polymorphism and migration lead to shared variation between recently diverged taxa. New analytic methods have been developed to help distinguish ancestral polymorphism from migration. Along with a growing number of datasets of multi-locus DNA sequence variation, these methods have spawned a renewed interest in speciation models with gene flow. Here, we review both speciation and population-genetic models that make explicit predictions about how the rate of recombination influences patterns of genetic variation within and between species. We then compare those predictions with empirical data of DNA sequence variation in rabbits and mice. We find strong support for the prediction that genomic regions experiencing low levels of recombination are more differentiated. In most cases, reduced gene flow appears to contribute to the pattern, although disentangling the relative contribution of reduced gene flow and selection at linked sites remains a challenge. We suggest fruitful areas of research that might help distinguish between different models.  相似文献

A series of C(2)-symmetric compounds with a mannitol-based scaffold has been investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, as Plm II inhibitors. Four different stereoisomers with either benzyloxy or allyloxy P1/P1' side chains were studied. Computational ranking of the binding affinities of the eight compounds was carried out using the linear interaction energy (LIE) method relying on a complex previously determined by crystallography. Within both series of isomers the theoretical binding energies were in agreement with the enzymatic measurements, illustrating the power of the LIE method for the prediction of ligand affinities prior to synthesis. The structural models of the enzyme-inhibitor complexes obtained from the MD simulations provided a basis for interpretation of further structure-activity relationships. Hence, the affinity of a structurally similar ligand, but with a different P2/P2' substituent was examined using the same procedure. The predicted improvement in binding constant agreed well with experimental results.  相似文献

Theoretical concepts regarding the potential variations within the bloodfilled cavities of the heart caused by excitation of the myocardium are scarce. In an attempt to understand these potential variations, calculations were made of the potentials due to a dipole adjacent to a disk of finite resistivity. The dipole was assumed to be in an infinite two-dimensional medium of higher resistivity. Equations for the potential inside a sphere due to an external source are also given.On the basis of the results, predictions were made on the effects of the intracardiac blood on the endocardial potentials: (1) the potential at the center of the cavity is independent of blood resistivity and equivalent to the free space potential; (2) potentials due to a tangential dipole are uniformly reduced; (3) potentials due to a radial dipole are smaller near the dipole, but greater at the far end of the dipole axis; (4) for a dipole radial to or making an angle with the cavity, potentials are reduced at some points but increased at others; (5) the potential along the transverse axis of the dipole has a constant value depending on conductivity; (6) intracardiac blood tends to smooth out potential variations within the cavity; (7) the potential depends both on dipole distance and direction; and (8) if the cavity volume increases, potentials decrease with distance from the dipole; the potential at the adjacent endocardial wall changes little.  相似文献

Adaptive divergence of phenotypes, such as sexual dimorphism or adaptive speciation, can result from disruptive selection via competition for limited resources. Theory indicates that speciation and sexual dimorphism can result from identical ecological conditions, but co-occurrence is unlikely because whichever evolves first should dissipate the disruptive selection necessary to drive evolution of the other. Here, we consider ecological conditions in which disruptive selection can act along multiple ecological axes. Speciation in lake populations of threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) has been attributed to disruptive selection due to competition for resources. Head shape in sticklebacks is thought to reflect adaptation to different resource acquisition strategies. We measure sexual dimorphism and species variation in head shape and body size in stickleback populations in two lakes in British Columbia, Canada. We find that sexual dimorphism in head shape is greater than interspecific differences. Using a numerical simulation model that contains two axes of ecological variation, we show that speciation and sexual dimorphism can readily co-occur when the effects of loci underlying sexually dimorphic traits are orthogonal to those underlying sexually selected traits.  相似文献

One of the primary age-related changes to collagenous tissues is the increased concentration of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). Although AGEs have been shown to increase the mechanical stiffness of many tissues, their influence on the mechanical properties of the annulus fibrosus has not been measured experimentally. In previous theoretical work, we hypothesized that the mechanical influence of AGEs on the annulus could be represented in an additive strain energy function with a separate crosslinking term, but the material coefficients associated with this term were not correlated with AGE concentration. In the current study, we measured the tensile stress-strain response of the human annulus in the axial direction both before and after glycation with methylglyoxal. Using nonlinear regression, the strain energy function was simultaneously applied to these new data and to data from a wide range of experimental protocols reported in the literature to determine values for the material coefficients appearing in the constitutive equation. Nonenzymatic collagen crosslinking induced a statistically significant change in annular material properties. Furthermore, the concentration of AGEs correlated positively with the material coefficients found in the terms of the strain energy function that we associate with collagen crosslinking. These data suggest that AGEs contribute to age-related disc stiffening as well as validate the hypothesis that biochemical constituents can be related mathematically to tissue behavior. In the future, this structurally guided constitutive relationship may provide further insight into the structure-function relationships of the annulus fibrosus.  相似文献

We studied the roosting ecology of the long-tailed bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) during the springautumn months from 1998–2002 at Hanging Rock in the highly fragmented landscape of South Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. We compared the structural characteristics and microclimates of roost sites used by communally and solitary roosting bats with those of randomly available sites, and roosts of C. tuberculatus occupying unmodified Nothofagus forest in the Eglinton Valley, Fiordland. Roosting group sizes and roost residency times were also compared. We followed forty radio-tagged bats to 94 roosts (20% in limestone crevices, 80% in trees) at Hanging Rock. Roosts were occupied for an average of 1 day and 86% were only used once during the study period. Colony size averaged 9.8 ± 1.1 bats (range 2–38) and colonies were dominated by breeding females and young. Indigenous forest, shrubland remnants and riparian zones were preferred roosting habitats. Communally roosting bats selected roosts in split trunks of some of the largest trees available. Selection of the largest available trees as roost sites is similar to behaviour of bat species occupying unmodified forested habitats. Temperatures inside 12 maternity roosts measured during the lactation period were variable. Five roosts were well insulated from ambient conditions and internal temperatures were stable, whereas the temperatures inside seven roosts fluctuated in parallel with ambient temperature. Tree cavities used by bats at Hanging Rock were significantly nearer ground level, had larger entrance dimensions, were less well insulated, and were occupied by fewer bats than roosts in the Eglinton Valley. These characteristics appear to expose their occupants to unstable microclimates and to a higher risk of threats such as predation. We suggest that roosts at Hanging Rock are of a lower quality than those in the Eglinton Valley, and that roost quality may be one of the contributory factors in the differential reproductive fitness observed in the two bat populations. The value of introduced willows (especially Salix fragilis) as bat roosts should be acknowledged. We recommend six conservation measures to mitigate negative effects of deterioration of roosting habitat: protection and enhancement of the quality of existing roosts, replanting within roosting habitat, provision of high quality artificial roosts, predator control, and education of landowners and statutory bodies.  相似文献
