Size variation among propagules is ubiquitous and small initial differences in size can be critical to survival, particularly in taxa where initial survival is variable and strongly size-dependent. Despite this, the sources of size variation among fish at hatching are rarely investigated. This study examined spatial position within egg clutches as a source of size variation at hatching of the benthic spawning fish Amphiprion melanopus. We quantified within-clutch size variation at hatching and found that newly hatched larvae from the periphery (5 mm from edge) of 2-dimensional clutches were smaller in standard length, cranial depth, eye diameter and body area (7%, 8%, 4% and 11%, respectively) than larvae from the interior positions within clutches. To investigate the source of this variation, sizes of embryos at different locations with clutches were measured within 2 h of fertilisation (8 d before hatching). Newly laid embryos from the clutch periphery were smaller in length and volume than embryos from the clutch interior (> 2% and 4-6%, respectively). These eggs from the periphery also had a 33% lower rate of oxygen consumption than did embryos from the clutch interior, throughout development. The relationships between position within a clutch and egg size, oxygen consumption and larval size imply that size variation in larval fish at hatching is partly generated during early embryogenesis, either from maternal endowment or maternal nest design, and was amplified throughout development.

Abstract

Three rookeries in Hawke's Bay were studied during 1966–68. First or replacement clutches were started between 26 August and 23 October. First clutches averaged 4.3 eggs and replacements 3.7 eggs. The mean size of first clutches varied between years from 4.1 to 4.6 eggs. Incubation took 17–18 days. Most losses occurred around hatching, when about 40% of the eggs or young were lost. Incubated eggs and small nestlings incurred losses of 20% and 10% respectively, and all nestlings older than 10 days survived to at least 20 days. On average, 1.4 young were reared per nest in which eggs were laid; successful nests averaged 2.2 young. First clutches averaged 1.3 young (2.4 per successful first clutch). During the season, mean clutch size declined from 4.2 to 3.5, the mean number of young hatched declined from 2.0 to 0.6 per clutch, and the mean number of young fledged from all clutches declined from 1.3 to 0.4 per clutch. Mean nestling weight increased with age from 14 g on the first day after hatching to 360 g on the 19th day. The causes of egg and nestling mortality and the adaptiveness of clutch size are discussed.

The paper describes an unusual endogenous eggshell colouration observed in an egg of the Cap Verde skink Chioninia delalandii.A female specimen, kept in a terrarium, laid three eggs. Two of them were considered as fertilized (oval germ-disk, weakly pink). They were embedded 1 cm deep in a layer of moistened clay granules (substrate/water 2:1) and kept under different temperatures (egg 1 “cool”, 26-27 °C; egg 2 “warm”, 29-30 °C). There was a normal embryonic development in both eggs from their volume-enlargement and characteristic allometric growth (egg wide > egg length). The young hatch after 51 and 56 days.A change in eggshell colour, however, occurred in the “warm” kept egg during the last third of its incubation period. It started with a small spot (2-3 mm) in the outer area of the animal egg pole and spread into a dark-violet colouration over the whole eggshell within 15 days. After hatching of the young the shells of both eggs were examined. In the non-coloured egg there was no great difference in colour between the inner and outer egg layer, while in the coloured egg there was a distinct difference between the inner part, which was dark violet-gray, and the pale gray calcareous deck-layer. From the macroscopic view along the edge of the eggshell it was not identifiable, if the colour pigment was infiltrated into protein fibrils of the condensed surface layer.A possible explanation for the eggshell colouration could be an unusual embryonic pigmentation. This assumption is based on the first appearance of a restricted, point-like coloured area and its further regular extension. It might be that dark pigments (melanophores?) reached the eggshell (membrana testacea) and infiltrated the border-area to the condensed surface layer.

We used the slender forest skink (Scincella modesta) as a model animal to test for the hypothesis that the upper threshold of incubation temperature is relatively low in lizards using shaded (and thus, cool) habitats. Eight gravid females were collected in early May 2005 from a population in Hangzhou, Zhejiang (eastern China). All females laid a single clutch of 7–13 eggs between mid-May and early June. Eggs were incubated at 24, 28 and 30 (±0.2) °C. None of eggs incubated at 30 °C hatched. Eggs incubated at 24 and 28 °C differed in incubation length but not in hatching success. The incubation length at 24 and 28 °C averaged 22.3 and 20.3 days, respectively. Hatchlings from eggs incubated at 24 and 28 °C did not differ in all examined morphological traits, but hatchlings from eggs incubated at 28 °C performed apparently worse in the racetrack than did their counterparts from eggs incubated at 24 °C. The temperature of 28 °C is close to the upper thermal threshold for successful embryonic development in S. modesta. Compared to other oviparous lizards using open (and thus, warm) habitats, the upper thermal threshold and the range of optimal temperatures for embryonic development are both lower in S. modesta. Our study supports the previous conclusion that species living in thermally different habitats may differ in the upper thermal threshold and the range of optimal temperatures for embryonic development.

Lack ( 1967 ) proposed that clutch size in species with precocial young was determined by nutrients available to females at the time of egg formation; since then others have suggested that regulation of clutch size in these species may be more complex. We tested whether incubation limitation contributes to ultimate constraints on maximal clutch size in Black Brent Geese (Black Brant) Branta bernicla nigricans. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between clutch size and duration of the nesting period (i.e. days between nest initiation and the first pipped egg) and the number of goslings leaving the nest. We used experimental clutch manipulations to assess these questions because they allowed us to create clutches that were larger than the typical maximum of five eggs in this species. We found that the per‐capita probability of egg success (i.e. the probability an egg hatched and the gosling left the nest) declined from 0.81 for two‐egg clutches to 0.50 for seven‐egg clutches. As a result of declining egg success, clutches containing more than five eggs produced, at best, only marginally more offspring. Manipulating clutch size at the beginning of incubation had no effect on the duration of the nesting period, but the nesting period increased with the number of eggs a female laid naturally prior to manipulation, from 25.4 days (95% CI 25.1–25.7) for three‐egg clutches to 27.7 days (95% CI 27.3–28.1) for six‐egg clutches. This delay in hatching may result in reduced gosling growth rates due to declining forage quality during the brood rearing period. Our results suggest that the strong right truncation of Brent clutches, which results in few clutches greater than five, is partially explained by the declining incubation capacity of females as clutch size increases and a delay in hatching with each additional egg laid. As a result, females laying clutches with more than five eggs would typically gain little fitness benefit above that associated with a five‐egg clutch.

Clutches of Red Grouse eggs were collected from the wild and subsequent hatching and rearing done in standard conditions in captivity. Variations in chick survival from one clutch to another in the same year were related to differences in hatch weight. Hatch weight was determined only partly by egg size. Weight loss between laying and hatching was related to survival independently of egg size. Variation in this weight loss obscured any simple relationship between egg size and survival, except in eggs laid by captive hens. Intrinsic differences amongst hens caused some variations in laying date, egg size, hatch weight and chick survival. Variations in egg size and hatch weight accounted for less than half the variation in survival; other unmeasured intrinsic factors were also important. Big clutches hatched earlier than small ones. The commonest clutches were of seven and eight eggs, with six and nine frequent. Very big clutches of ten or more eggs were infrequent and chicks from them sometimes survived worse than from smaller clutches. As in other species, the commonest clutch sizes were not the most productive. There was no simple relationship between egg size and clutch size.

This study was conducted to determine the breeding season, gonadal development, egg laying period, clutch size and other biological aspects of spotted flapshell turtle, Lissemys punctata, of Bangladesh between January 1997 and December 2001. The egg laying period of L. punctata, was found between August and March. The nesting sites were elevated fallow lands in secluded areas. The female turtle laid all the mature eggs at a time for each clutch at night. A gravid female turtle laid three clutches of eggs in each year and the mean clutch size was 13.0 ± 1.9 eggs and mean weight of each egg was 10.3 ± 1.3 g. The eggs are spherical in shape and whitish in color. The mean incubation period was 173 ± 34 days (range 119–225 days). The incubation period of first clutch was the longest than the second and third clutches. Hatching success was found 41%. Maximum hatching was observed in June. The present investigation was made to explore the possibility to raise turtle farming in captive condition. The findings would, hopefully, help to rear the species and to assess the commercial potentiality of turtle farming in captive condition, that is, in the eco-climatic condition of Bangladesh.

Breeding biology of the Barn Owl Tyto alba in central Mali
Data were obtained on 178 clutches of African Barn Owls in central Mali from four breeding seasons during 1979–1983. Significantly more clutches were laid in 1979–1980 and significantly fewer in 1980– 1981 than the average for the 4 years and there were significantly more clutches laid in the middle period of the annual breeding season. The egg volume was significantly smaller at the beginning of the breeding season and significantly larger in the middle than the overall mean with eggs of second clutches being larger than those of first clutches. The clutch size was 605 eggs of which 479 hatched. The number of young fledged per successful nest was 319 and was 1 83 for all nesting attempts. The month was the only variable shown to affect significantly the clutch size, eggs hatched and fledging rate, the highest success rates being associated with the middle of the breeding period. The average interval between the hatching of eggs was 2–31 days. Survival rates (47'1%) to fledging were significantly affected by year (1981–1982 being the least) and month (mid-season birds the best). The order of hatching significantly affected age at death or disappearance, the first-hatched birds surviving the longest. The year significantly affected age at fledging, the young from the year in which most clutches were laid leaving the nest at the youngest age and those associated with the year having the least number of clutches remaining in the nest the longest. The month of hatching also affected fledging age, birds at the extremes of the breeding season fledging at older ages. The discussion compares these data with those from elsewhere.

This study examined the effects of temperature and phase polyphenism on egg hatching time in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, and the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria. The two species exhibited differences and similarities in hatching behavior when exposed to different temperature conditions. In 12-h thermocycles of various temperatures, the S. gregaria eggs hatched during the cryoperiod (low temperature period), whereas L. migratoria eggs hatched during the thermoperiod (high temperature period). The eggs of both species hatched during the species-specific period of the thermoperiod in response to a temperature difference as small as 1 °C. Furthermore, the locusts adjusted hatching time to a new thermal environment that occurred shortly before the expected hatching time. In both species, the hatching of the eggs was synchronized to a specific time of the day, and two hatching peaks separated by approximately 1 day were observed at a constant temperature after the eggs were transferred from thermocycles 3 days before hatching. Eggs laid by gregarious females hatched earlier than those laid by solitarious females in S. gregaria but this difference was not observed in L. migratoria.

We examined the hypothesis that pseudosexual behaviour facilitates reproduction in the unisexual gecko, Lepidodactylus luguhris. Thirty-eight hatchlings were housed in isolated or social conditions. Age at initial egg development, days between egg development and laying for the geckos'first three clutches of eggs, inter-clutch intervals and dominance behaviours were recorded. Lepidodactylus lugubris developed their first clutch of eggs at about 9·5 months of age after their endolymphatic sacs became externally visible. The geckos laid their eggs about 28–30 days later with smaller geckos requiring more time between egg development and laying than larger geckos. Grouped geckos formed dominance hierarchies. In the triad and quadrad groups, the subordinate geckos'growth rates were slowed and their fecundity was suppressed. Pseudosexual behaviour was not observed in the geckos and was unrelated to fecundity because isolated geckos developed and laid three clutches of eggs at the same rate as grouped geckos. Dominance behaviour, not pseudosexual behaviour, was related to fecundity in L. lugubris. Dominance behaviour may facilitate dispersal in this colonizing species because subordinate geckos could increase their fecundity by moving to less populated areas.

Fish monogeneans are lethal parasites in aquaculture. We provide the first experimental evidence that a notorious fish monogenean, Neobenedenia sp., can produce viable eggs in isolation for three consecutive generations. We infected individual, isolated, farmed barramundi, Lates calcarifer (Bloch) with a single oncomiracidium (larva) of the hermaphroditic monogenean Neobenedenia sp. Isolated parasites reached sexual maturity at day 10 post-hatch (24°C, 35‰) and laid ∼3,300 embryonated eggs over 17 days. Egg production rapidly increased following sexually maturity on day 10 (58±15 eggs) and peaked on day 15 (496±68 eggs) before gradually decreasing. Neobenedenia sp. exhibited egg laying and egg hatching rhythms. Parasites laid eggs continuously, but egg production increased in periods of darkness (64.3%), while the majority of oncomiracidia (81%) emerged from eggs in the first three hours of light. Eggs laid by isolated ‘parent’ parasites hatched and individual emerging oncomiracidia were used to infect more individual, isolated fish, with three consecutive, isolated, parasite generations (F1, F2 and F3) raised in the laboratory. Infection success and egg hatching success did not differ between generations. Our data show that one parasite, in the absence of a mate, presents a severe threat to captive fish populations.

Artificial oviposition sites were used to estimate egg deposition rates in the field. Females laid an average of 10.76 eggs/minute with a mean duration of 22.81 minutes, giving an average clutch size of 245 eggs. Since one mating corresponded to one clutch of eggs, lifetime mating success was used as a measure of the number of clutches produced. Mean lifetime clutch production was 5.91 clutches per female, equating to 1447 eggs per female per lifetime. Eggs were hatched in the laboratory at temperatures comparable with those in the field. Hatching was highly synchronised and the overall hatching success was 75.1%. Causes of egg mortality in the laboratory were limited to infertility and unhatchability. Since no other sources of egg mortality could be found at the study site, this value was a good reflection of hatching success in the field. Lifetime egg production and hatching success were used to estimate the number of viable offspring produced per female, giving a higher order estimate of reproductive success than has previously been published for a zygopteran.

Clutch-size, incubation and hatching success were studied in P. domesticus and P. montanus in 1961 and 1963–64 at Oxford. The most frequent clutch-size was four eggs in P. domesticus and five eggs in P. montanus . With one exception, colonies of P. domesticus showed no significant annual or local variations in its mean clutch-size; in P. montanus , however, there were significant annual variations in the mean clutch-size. Both species showed a seasonal increase followed by a decrease in their mean clutch-sizes.
Partial incubation occurred during the laying period of the clutch; sufficient incubation for continuous development of the embryo was apparently achieved when the last egg had been laid in clutches of two and three eggs in P. domesticus and in clutches of four eggs in P. montanus , but when the penultimate egg had been laid in larger clutches of both species. On average, hatching in P. domesticus occurred more or less synchronously in all eggs in clutches of two and three eggs, and in all eggs except the last one laid in larger clutches; the last egg in the larger clutches hatched up to a day after the others. It is suggested that this pattern of hatching was brought about by the pattern of incubation during the laying period.
P. domesticus had a lower hatching success than P. montanus , probably because fewer of its eggs were fertile.

In tree swallows Tachycineta bicolor, last‐laid eggs typically hatch one to two days after the other eggs in the clutch hatch, putting last‐hatched offspring at a disadvantage when competing for food delivered by parents. We studied the biology of last‐laid, last‐hatched tree swallow offspring over two years in a Wyoming, USA, population. Our first objective was to compare the growth of last‐hatched offspring to that of their earlier‐hatched nestmates. One previous study had suggested that last‐hatched, competitively disadvantaged offspring grow feathers faster than senior nestmates, even at the expense of other aspects of growth. This may allow last‐hatched offspring to fledge with senior nestmates and avoid abandonment by parents. A second objective was to determine the sex of nestlings from last‐laid eggs. If last‐laid eggs typically produce undersized, weak adults that are poor competitors for resources, and if the fitness costs of being undersized/weak are more severe for males than for females, then selection may favour having offspring from last‐laid eggs to be female. In this study, last‐laid eggs hatched in 63 of 66 (94%) nests and hatched last in 93% of cases. At hatching, offspring from last‐laid eggs weighed, on average, 63% as much as their three heaviest nestmates (range: 26–107%). Offspring from last‐laid eggs fledged from 71% of the nests that produced at least one fledgling and apparently starved to death in remaining nests. Last‐hatched offspring who were presumably at a substantial competitive disadvantage (those whose mass at hatching was no more than about 75% of the mean mass of their three heaviest nestmates), gained mass more slowly than their senior nestmates but they eventually attained the same peak mass before fledging. Last‐hatched offspring grew primary feathers more slowly than their senior nestmates although the difference in growth rate was slight (0.2 mm/d) and only marginally significant. As a group, offspring from last‐laid eggs did not differ from offspring from all other eggs in either maximum mass attained before fledging or tarsus length at fledging. This is atypical for species with asynchronous hatching and is possibly the result of another unusual trait: the tendency of parent tree swallows to distribute food equally among young within broods. The sex ratio of offspring from last‐laid eggs did not deviate from 1:1 (22 males, 21 females). Given that last‐hatched eggs do not routinely produce undersized/weak individuals in our study population, there should be little selection on parent females to bias the sex ratio of last‐laid offspring towards females.

The overproduction of offspring is commonly associated with high hatching failure and a mechanism for dispensing with surplus young. We used experimental evolution of burying beetle populations Nicrophorus vespilloides to determine causality in these correlations. We asked does eliminating the mechanism for killing “spare” offspring cause the evolution of a more restrained clutch size and consequently select for reduced hatching failure? N. vespilloides typically overproduces eggs but kills 1st instar larvae through partial filial cannibalism during brood care. We established replicate evolving populations that either could practice filial cannibalism (Full Care) or could not, by removing parents before their young hatched (No Care). After 20+ generations of experimental evolution, we measured clutch size and hatching success. We found that No Care females produced fewer eggs than Full Care females when allowed to breed on a small corpse, a finding not explained by differences in female quality. On larger corpses, females from both populations laid similar numbers of eggs. Furthermore, hatching success was greater in the No Care populations on small corpses. Our results suggest that the adaptive overproduction of offspring depends on a mechanism for eliminating surplus young and that killing offspring, in turn, relaxes selection against hatching failure.

The determinants of offspring size and number in the tropical oviparous multi-clutched lizard,Calotes versicolor, were examined using both univariate and multivariate (path) analyses. InC. versicolor maternal snout-vent length (SVL) and body condition influence clutch mass and clutch size but have no significant influence on offspring size. The positive effect of maternal SVL and body condition on offspring number is counterbalanced by a negative effect of breeding time on egg mass. In fact, breeding time directly influences the offspring body mass and condition through variation in the egg mass. There is a trade-off between offspring mass and condition with offspring number, and breeding time influences both. Offspring hatched from the eggs of early (May–June) or mid (July–August) breeding periods invariably show lower mass and condition than those hatched from the eggs of late breeding season (September–October). Yet, there is no variation in offspring SVL among early, mid and late clutches. Thus, inC. versicolor offspring SVL is optimized while body mass and condition are not optimized.

The breeding biology of two island populations of the Northwestern Crow was studied in British Columbia over a period of five years. Both populations laid an average of four eggs per clutch, of which approximately 75% hatched. More young survived to fledge on Mandate than on Mitlenatch Island. The young from nests close (< 100 m) to the beach on Mitlenatch had a higher survival rate than those from further inland. The number of eggs lost or failing to hatch was lowest in clutches of four eggs. There was a non-significant trend for chick survival to be inversely related to clutch size. The net result was that clutches of five eggs produced no more young than did clutches of four eggs. It is suggested that the major limiting factor on clutch size is food availability but the decreased hatching success of any remaining eggs once hatching has started is also a contributing factor.

The ability of parents to respond to changes in food supply within a season will have a large effect on fitness through the number and quality of chicks fledged. Great tits, Parus major, attempt to synchronise their production of chicks with a seasonal food peak, but when food supply fails, hatching asynchrony of chicks provides a mechanism by which some young can be fledged because more developed chicks outcompete their less developed siblings for the reduced parental food supply. We tested whether female great tits can potentially control the degree of hatching asynchrony by using incubation before clutch completion, so that early laid eggs develop faster and hatch sooner. The temperature of an artificial egg placed in 29 nests during the laying period was measured with data loggers, and nocturnal incubation of eggs similar to incubation post clutch completion was recorded in all nests. We then demonstrated that eggs removed from the nest for 72 hour periods prior to clutch completion hatched later than eggs remaining in the nest for the entirety of the laying period. Our results show that variable pre clutch completion incubation (which was mostly nocturnal) can lead to faster embryo development and earlier hatching, so potentially providing a mechanism for adaptive female control of degree of hatching asynchrony.
