Excess aluminum (Al) exposure impairs neurocognitive function in humans and animals. Epidemiologic studies have shown a potential link between chronic Al exposure and Alzheimer's disease. In the present study, we sought to evaluate the protective effects of the herbal medicine Dipsacus asper extract against the cognitive impairment and overexpression of hippocampal beta-amyloid protein (Abeta) induced by chronic Al exposure in rats. Vitamin E (VE) was used as a positive control. Following exposure to 0.3% aluminum chloride (AlCl(3)) solution for 90 days in their drinking water, animals displayed a striking decrease (>80%) in step-through latency in the passive avoidance task and a significant increase (123%) in the number of Abeta immunoreactive cells in the hippocampus compared to controls. Al-exposed animals were then randomly assigned to receive vehicle, Dipsacus asper extract (4 g/kg), or VE (40 mg/kg) treatment up to 5 months. Both Dipsacus asper extract and VE significantly ameliorated animal's performance impairment in the passive avoidance task and suppressed the overexpression of hippocampal Abeta immunoreactivity. The effects of Dipsacus asper extract, but not VE, increased with time of treatment. The present results suggest that Dipsacus asper extract may possess therapeutic effects against Alzheimer's disease.  相似文献

The teasel, Dipsacus fullonum is known to catch invertebrates in its water filled leaf bases, but experimental testing of reproductive benefits of this have been lacking. We report the effects of insect supplementation/removal and water removal during spring/summer on Dipsacus in two field populations. There were no significant treatment effects on biomass, but addition of dead dipteran larvae to leaf bases caused a 30% increase in seed set and the seed mass:biomass ratio. This study provides the first empirical evidence for reproductive benefit from carnivory in Dipsacus fullonum.  相似文献

Scabiosa caucasica has been found affected by a new species of Aphelenchoides , herein described and named A. blastophthorus. The symptoms of disease are destruction of the inflorescences and distortion of the leaves with reduction of the laminae. Similar symptoms were produced in scabious by experimental infestation. The nematode can infest teazle ( Dipsacus fullonum ), but has not been found naturally occurring on any host but scabious.  相似文献

Dipsacus fullonum L. is a biennial weed that is widely spread in the Pampean region of Argentina. Plants of this species showing leaf mosaic symptoms were collected near sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) crops infected with Sunflower chlorotic mottle virus (SuCMoV). Symptomatic plants were tested by biological, serological and molecular assays. Sunflower and Nicotiana occidentalis L. plants mechanically inoculated with extracts from symptomatic D. fullonum leaves developed typical SuCMoV symptoms. Samples were DAS-ELISA positive when probed with a SuCMoV antiserum. RT-PCR was used to amplify the whole coat protein gene of the infecting virus. An 807 bp fragment was amplified, cloned and sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequence (EU606023) shared 96% amino acid identity with the SuCMoV sequence (AF255677). These results indicate that D. fullonum mosaic is caused by an isolate of SuCMoV. Thus, this finding has epidemiological relevance as the weed may act as a natural virus reservoir.  相似文献

The influence of viral disease symptoms on the behaviour of virus vectors has implications for disease epidemiology. Here we show that previously reported preferential colonization of potatoes infected by potato leafroll virus (genus Polerovirus) (luteovirus) (PLRV) by alatae of Myzus persicae, the principal aphid vector of PLRV, is influenced by volatile emissions from PLRV-infected plants. First, in our bioassays both differential immigration and emigration were involved in preferential colonization by aphids of PLRV-infected plants. Second, M. persicae apterae aggregated preferentially, on screening above leaflets of PLRV-infected potatoes as compared with leaflets from uninfected plants, or from plants infected with potato virus X (PVX) or potato virus Y (PVY). Third, the aphids aggregated preferentially on screening over leaflet models treated with volatiles collected from PLRV-infected plants as compared with those collected from uninfected plants. The specific cues eliciting the aphid responses were not determined, but differences between headspace volatiles of infected and uninfected plants suggest possible ones.  相似文献

Extensive studies showed that no disease was caused when seeds of different forage grasses were inoculated with Xanthomonas campestris pv. graminis. The disease could easily be induced by infecting the plants in the root system, leaves or flower. The inoculation site in the leaf proved to be of vital importance for the development of the disease. Wilting symptoms were quickly induced when the pathogen was inoculated near the leaf base. Plants in root-contact with diseased plants showed disease symptoms. It is not known whether these symptoms were caused by the bacteria or by toxins released by nearby diseased plants. Cross inoculation trials on different grass varieties revealed that different pathovars exist in the group of xanthomonads, pathogenic to forage grasses. Some have a broad host range whereas others are more limited to a single plant genus. Field trials suggest that in Belgian climatic conditions, the losses caused by bacterial wilt are rather limited.  相似文献

Diverse bacterial taxa live in association with plants without causing deleterious effects. Previous analyses of phyllosphere communities revealed the predominance of few bacterial genera on healthy dicotyl plants, provoking the question of whether these commensals play a particular role in plant protection. Here, we tested two of them, Methylobacterium and Sphingomonas, with respect to their ability to diminish disease symptom formation and the proliferation of the foliar plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 on Arabidopsis thaliana. Plants were grown under gnotobiotic conditions in the absence or presence of the potential antagonists and then challenged with the pathogen. No effect of Methylobacterium strains on disease development was observed. However, members of the genus Sphingomonas showed a striking plant-protective effect by suppressing disease symptoms and diminishing pathogen growth. A survey of different Sphingomonas strains revealed that most plant isolates protected A. thaliana plants from developing severe disease symptoms. This was not true for Sphingomonas strains isolated from air, dust, or water, even when they reached cell densities in the phyllosphere comparable to those of the plant isolates. This suggests that plant protection is common among plant-colonizing Sphingomonas spp. but is not a general trait conserved within the genus Sphingomonas. The carbon source profiling of representative isolates revealed differences between protecting and nonprotecting strains, suggesting that substrate competition plays a role in plant protection by Sphingomonas. However, other mechanisms cannot be excluded at this time. In conclusion, the ability to protect plants as shown here in a model system may be an unexplored, common trait of indigenous Sphingomonas spp. and may be of relevance under natural conditions.  相似文献

分析了龙底自然保护区油料植物组成与资源特点。结果表明:(1)油料植物107科281属477种,其中精油植物131种,樟科(7属27种)、芸香科(6属21种)、唇形科(11属17种)等11个科为优势科,以木本植物为主,占73.38%。(2)以种子种皮为主要含油部位的植物占71.47%,植物含油量>20.0%的有211种,>50.0%的43种;油脂脂肪酸含量>70.0%的有7科11种,亚油酸含量>70.0%的有12科20种。(3)在精油植物中,57种植物含精油量>1.0%,13种>4.0%。龙底自然保护区内油料植物资源丰富,特别是富油植物资源种类较多,是油料植物富集之地,具开发利用潜力。  相似文献

A virus associated with severe mosaic disease of gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.) in south India was identified. The infected plants showed mosaic, vein banding, blistering on malformed leaves and fruits. Host range, transmission, serological and electron microscopic studies were carried out to identify the virus. The virus was readily transmitted by Sap inoculation and by aphids in a non-persistent manner. The host range of the virus was mainly limited to cucurbitaceous and chenopodium species. The virus showed positive serological relationships with members of potyvirus genus but not with cucumo, ilar and taspoviruses. Electron microscopy of leaf dip preparation of infected leaves revealed long flexuous filamentous virus particles measuring 750 × 12 nm. On the basis of symptomotology, host range, transmission, serology and particle morphology the virus associated with mosaic disease of gherkin might be the member of potyvirus genus.  相似文献

为了解广西武鸣县野生种子植物区系特征, 对其野生种子植物资源进行调查。结果表明,广西武鸣县有野生种子植物2 542种,隶属于184科898属,以被子植物占优势,裸子植物贫乏。从科属组成上看,以大科、单种属和寡种属为主体。科、属和种分布区类型丰富,含典型的热带亚热带成分,兼具温带成分,呈热带至亚热带过渡性质。与邻近地区比较,武鸣县植物多样性比较丰富,植物区系成分与广西横县最相近。因此,武鸣县种子植物多样性丰富、热带性质明显、地理成分多样、起源古老,同时聚集了一些特有植物和珍稀濒危植物,体现出北部湾植物区系的特征。  相似文献

Estrogen and progestins have adverse effects, and many of these adverse effects are caused by progestins. Due to this, many women choose to use botanical alternatives for hormone replacement therapy, which does not trigger steroidogenic properties. Therefore, it is necessary to screen these herbs for progestogenic and anti-progestogenic properties. Extract of 13 Chinese medicinal plants were analysed for progestogenic and anti-progestogenic activities by using progesterone response element-driven luciferase reporter gene bioassay. MTT assay was carried out to investigate the cytotoxic effect of herb extract on PAE cells. Among the 13 herbs, Dipsacus asperoides extract exhibited progestogenic activity, and 10 species – Cortex eucommiae, Folium artemisiae argyi, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Angelica sinensis, Atractylodes macrocephala koidz, Scutellaria baicalensis, Cuscuta chinensis, Euscaphis japonica, Ailanthus altissima, and Dioscorea opposita – were recognized to have anti-progestogenic like activities. Extract of Dipsacus asperoides demonstrated dose-dependent progestogenic activity, and the progestogenic activity of 100 μg/mL extracts was equivalent to 31.45 ng/mL progesterone activity. Herbs extracts that exhibited anti-progestogenic-like activity also inhibited the 314.46 ng/mL progesterone activity in a dose-response manner. None of the herb extracts shown significant toxic effect on PAE cells at 40–100 μg/mL compared to control. This discovery will aid selection of suitable herbs for hormone replacement therapy.  相似文献

Two closely related teasels (Dipsacales: Dipsacaceae, Dipsacus spp.) of European origin have become invasive weeds in the United States. Common teasel (Dipsacus fullonum L.) and cutleaf teasel (Dipsacus laciniatus L.) have likely been in North America for more than two centuries, having been introduced along with cultivated teasel [D. sativus (L.) Honckney], an obsolete crop plant. There are few records of American insects or pathogens attacking Dipsacus spp. Invasive teasels have recently begun to spread rapidly throughout much of their current range, for reasons that are not yet known. Common and/or cut-leaf teasel have been listed as noxious in five US states and as invasive in 12 other states and four national parks. Because the family Dipsacaceae is an exclusively Old World family, classical biological control is an important component of the overall management strategy of this weed in the US. Field surveys for natural enemies of D. fullonum and D. laciniatus in their native ranges and literature reviews of natural enemies of plants in the family Dipsacaceae have yielded 102 species of insects in six orders, as well as 27 fungi from 10 orders, three mites, one nematode, and two viruses. Due to the biennial nature of these weeds, a strategy to assign highest priority to biological control candidates attacking first-year (rosette) plants has been established. Candidates selected for further study based on this strategy include Chromatomyia ramosa (Hendel) (Diptera: Agromyzidae), Longitarsus strigicollis Wollaston (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Epitrimerus knautiae Liro (Acarina: Eriophyiidae), Euphydryas desfontainii (Godart) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), Erysiphe knautiae Duby (Erysiphales: Erysiphaceae), and Sphaerotheca dipsacearum (Tul. and C. Oomycete plant pathogens, such as Phytophthora, downy mildews and Pythium, have devastating disease effects on numerous crop and ornamental plants. Various types of genetic resistance to oomycetes occur in plants, and can be determined at the subspecific or varietal level (race or cultivar-specific resistance), or at the species or genus level (nonhost resistance). In addition, resistance might be a quantitative phenotype (partial resistance). Resistance reactions are often associated with the hypersensitive response – a programed cell death pathway. Recent advances in the genetic, biochemical and cytological characterization of disease resistance suggests that the hypersensitive response is associated with all forms of resistance to Phytophthora and downy mildews. Identification of the resistance genes involved in nonhost and partial resistance to oomycetes remains an important challenge.  相似文献

Widely distributed in plants, flavonoids reduce the incidence of cancer and cardiovascular disease. In this study, flavonoid content and composition in members of the Prunus genus were evaluated using liquid chromatography with diode array and electrospray ionization mass spectrometric detection (UPLC-DAD-ESI/QTOF-MS). Flavonoids in plants of the Prunus genus include the basic structures of kaempferol, quercetin, and catechin, and exist as mono-, di-, or tri-glycoside compounds mono-acylated with acetic acid. A total of 23 individual flavonoids were isolated and confirmed, three of which appear to be newly identified compounds: quercetin 3-O-(2″-O-acetyl)neohesperidoside, quercetin 3-O-(4″-O-acetyl)rutinoside, and kaempferol 3-O-(4″-O-acetyl)rutinoside. Japanese apricot and Chinese plum contained the highest amounts of flavonoids in the Prunus genus. During the ripening stage of Japanese apricot, the total flavonol content was reduced, while the catechin content was increased.  相似文献

Mutualistic interactions of plants with true fungi are a well‐known and widespread phenomenon, which includes mycorrhiza and non‐mycorrhizal endophytes like species of Epichloë. Despite the fact that these organisms intrude into plants, neither strong defence reactions nor the onset of symptoms of disease can be observed in most or even all infested plants, in contrast to endophytic pathogens. Oomycetes are fungal‐like organisms belonging to the kingdom Straminipila, which includes diatoms and seaweeds. Although having evolved many convergent traits with true fungi and occupying similar evolutionary niches, widespread oomycete endophytes are not known to date, although more than 500 endophytic pathogens, including species of the obligate biotrophic genus Albugo, have been described. Here, we report that oomycetes of the genus Albugo are widespread in siliques of natural host populations. A total of 759 plants, encompassing four genera with rare reports of white blister incidents and one with common incidents, were collected from 25 sites in Germany. Nested PCR with species‐specific primers revealed that 5–27% of the hosts with rare disease incidence carried asymptomatic Albugo in their siliques, although only on a single plant of 583 individuals, an isolated pustule on a single leaf could be observed. Control experiments confirmed that these results were not because of attached spores, but because of endophytic mycelium. Vertical inheritance of oomycete infections has been reported for several plant pathogens, and it seems likely that in nature this way of transmission plays an important role in the persistence of asymptomatic endophytic Albugo species.  相似文献

Four biennial species (Arctium tomentosum, Cirsium vulgare, Dipsacus sylvester and Daucus carota) which originate from habitats of different nutrient availability were investigated in a 2-year experiment in a twofactorial structured block design varying light (natural daylight versus shading) and fertilizer addition. The experiment was designed to study storage as reserve formation (competing with growth) or as accumulation (see Chapin et al. 1990). We show that (i) the previous definitions of storage excluded an important process, namely the formation of storage tissue. Depending on species, storage tissue and the filling process can be either a process of reserve formation, or a process of accumulation. (ii) In species representing low-resource habitats, the formation of a storage structure competes with other growth processes. Growth of storage tissue and filling with storage products is an accumulation process only in the high-resource plant Arctium tomentosum. We interpret the structural growth of low-resource plants in terms of the evolutionary history of these species, which have closely related woody species in the Mediterranean area. (iii) The use of storage products for early leaf growth determines the biomass development in the second season and the competitive ability of this species during growth with perennial species. (iv) The high-resource plant Arctium has higher biomass development under all conditions, i.e. plants of low-resource habitats are not superior under low-resource conditions. The main difference between high- and low-resource plants is that low-resource plants initiate flowering at a lower total plant internal pool size of available resources.  相似文献
