Sex and season-related differences of basic haematological values in the mountain reedbuck (Reduncula fulvorufula).

1. Basic haematological values in the peripheral blood of four male and 13 female mountain reedbucks (Reduncula fulvorufula) have been repeatedly estimated. 2. Comparing these results for both sexes, we noted pronouncedly lower haematocrit values and haemoglobin contents in females (statistical significance less than or greater than 1%). In the white blood cells only an increased proportion of neutrophils in females was apparent. 3. We have been unable to find seasonal related differences in the red and white blood overall picture of the cells during the summer and winter seasons with the exception of raised red cell counts and increased proportion of monocytes in the winter. The presented findings are compared and discussed with those abstracted from the literature.     

The influence of some alkylating agents on the structure of DNA in vitro

The influence of the industrially used mutagenic agents β-propiolactone (BPL), propylene oxide (PO) and butylene oxide (BO) on the structure of DNA in vitro was studied. The heat denaturation of DNA and its reversibility were used as a criterion of the structural change in the DNA molecule. The rate constants for the reaction of the different compounds with DNA were determined. The effects were correlated with the degree of alkylation. Butylene oxide and propylene oxide caused a decrease of the reversibility of the heat denaturation at a degree of alkylation at which the melting temperature was only slightly decreased. β-propiolactone had no influence on the reversibility, but decreased the melting temperature of DNA as a function of the degree of alkylation.     

Basic haematological values in carnivores--II. The Felidae

1. Basic haematological values in 34 animals of eight carnivorous species are reported. 2. In four Northern lynxs (Lynx lynx lynx), two male and two female animals, the mean values are given: erythrocyte counts 8.51 X 10(12)/l, haematocrit 0.392/l, haemoglobin content 148.0 g/l and leukocyte count 7.92 X 10(9)/l. 3. In six male pumas (Puma concolor missolensis) the mean values estimated are: erythrocyte count 9.35 X 10(12)/l, haematocrit 0.43/l, haemoglobin content 163.9 g/l and leukocyte count 7.73 X 10(9)/l. Individual values in one female puma are also given. 4. In six jaguars (Panthera onca), three male and three female animals, the mean values are given: erythrocyte count 8.27 X 10(12)/l, haematocrit 0.37/l, haemoglobin content 137.1 g/l and leukocyte count 15.15 X 10(9)/l. 5. Only individual values are reported in one clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), in one leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor), in one Corbett's tiger (Panthera tigris Corbetti) and in one Altaic tiger (Panthera tigris Altaica). 6. In four lions (Panthera leo leo), two male and two female animals, the mean estimated values are: erythrocyte count 10.14 X 10(12)/l, haematocrit 0.462/l, haemoglobin content 159.0 g/l and leukocyte count 11.05 X 10(9)/l. In six female cheetahs (Acinonox jubatus jubatus) the mean values estimated are: erythrocyte count 7.86 X 10(12)/l, haematocrit 0.373/l, haemoglobin content 142.8 g/l and leukocyte count 8.65 X 10(9)/l. For three male cheetahs only individual values are reported. 8. All results achieved are compared with those abstracted from the literature and discussed.     

不同耕作方式对梯田玉米叶片的光合与蒸腾指标的影响

2002～2003年在云南农业大学农场采用滇丰4号玉米种,开展了不同耕作措施的玉米光合指标的研究。结果表明:等高线+薄膜覆盖+秸秆覆盖+开沟种植构建了高产玉米冠层的微环境特性和冠层结构,并改善了叶片光合特性。生育期间各个坡度其他处理的叶绿素a、b的含量始终大于对照处理;在2003年9月2日光合速率的日变化12:00时,处理B要远远大于对照,增加比例为24.35%;处理B的穗位叶蒸腾速率要明显大于对照处理,2003年各坡度平均增加达282.8%,2002年为350.4%;经相关分析知,各个坡度总体上玉米叶片净光合速率、气孔导度都与蒸腾速率呈显著正相关关系。     

Influence of zinc-saccharide complexes on some haematological parameters in rats

The effects of three recently synthesized zinc-saccharide complexes (zinc-fructose, zinc-galactose and zinc-glucose) on blood -aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity, glutathione (GSH), zinc-protoporphyrin (ZPP) and urinary -aminolevulinic acid (ALA) levels have been investigated to ascertain the utility of these complexes as zinc supplements and as preventive agents against lead intoxication in rats.     

Basic haematological values in antelopes--IV. A comparison and concluding remarks

Comparison of mean erythrocyte counts, mean haematocrit values, mean haemoglobin content and mean corpuscular volume of the red cell is presented for 21 species of antelopes (four species being excluded because of the small number of animals investigated). A direct relationship of haematocrit values and haemoglobin content and an inverse relationship of red cell counts and mean corpuscular volume of the erythrocytes were noted. The significance of an increased total surface area for oxygen exchange is discussed and values obtained in the red blood picture are compared with those of domesticated animals (cattle, goat and sheep) taken from the literature. Mean leukocyte counts were found to be in the human range with the exception of two species, but significantly lower than in domesticated artiodactylids. Problems in assessing the general health, the age, the effect of diet and of environment in captivity are discussed. Problems of methodology, especially of blood sampling, are given comparing results in manually restrained and in sedated animals.     

Quantitative studies of haematological values in long-term ovariectomized, ovariohysterectomized and hysterectomized rats

The effects of ovariectomy, ovariohysterectomy and hysterectomy on total and differential white blood cell counts, distribution of T and B lymphocytes and T/B cell relationship were studied. Changes in these parameters associated with the surgical operations were observed in total leukocytes and lymphocytes, absolute and relative band neutrophils and T/B cell relationship. Results suggest that the ovaries together with the uterus are potential regulatory organs upon the absolute number of circulating leukocytes and lymphocytes in female Lewis rats. In addition to their effects upon this important population of cells, the ovaries and uterus have moderate effects upon relative T and B lymphocyte numbers in peripheral blood. In general the changes depend mainly on the removal of the ovaries and to a lesser degree on hysterectomy.     

Effect of hydration on some orthostatic and haematological responses to head-up tilt

Experiments were undertaken to determine the effects of hydration status on a) orthostatic responses, and on b), relative changes in intravascular volume and protein content, during 70 degrees head-up tilt (HUT). Six men underwent 45 min of HUT, preceded by 45 min supine, first dehydrated, and again 105 min later after rehydration with water. Heart rate was consistently lower following rehydration (p less than 0.01), while supine diastolic pressure was higher (p less than 0.02). Systolic pressure fell during dehydrated HUT (p less than 0.01), but not during rehydrated HUT. Postural haemoconcentration, which was reduced after rehydration (p less than 0.001), was accompanied by a decrease in intravascular albumin content (p less than 0.05). Two subjects experienced severe presyncopal symptoms during dehydrated HUT, but not during rehydrated HUT. Thus, it appears that rehydration after fluid restriction improves orthostatic tolerance. Furthermore, extravascular hydration status may be more important than intravascular hydration status in determining orthostatic tolerance.     

Effects of hypercapnia on the buffer capacity and haematological values in Salmo salar (L.)

The effects of high environmental carbon dioxide tension (PCO₂) on buffering status, pH, haematocrit, red blood cell (RBC) count, mean corpuscle volume (MCV), and chloride (Cl^–) distribution in the blood of young salmon were investigated after 30 min and 24 h. An increase in blood buffering capacity was observed after 24 h. As compared to the preacclimation situation, haematocrit, RBC, MCV and Cl^– content of the erythrocytes increased after 30 min but decreased if hypercapnia was sustained for 24 h. However the plasma bicarbonate (HCO₃) content increased over the whole experimental period. Plasma Cl^– content was decreased after 24 h, but the ratio of Cl^– between erythrocytes and plasma increased at the onset of hypercapnia, then remained unchanged during the rest of the investigation period.     

The influence of some sympatholytic,parasympatholytic and serotonin-synthesis-inhibiting agents on the ultrastructure of the rabbit pineal organ

The influence of certain drugs on the ultrastructure of rabbit pinealocytes was studied. The results obtained after administration of p-chlorophenylalanine and p-chloroamphetamine support the hypothesis proposed earlier that the smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the light pinealocytes is involved in indoleamine synthesis. The administration of either one of the sympatholytic agents, 6-hydroxydopamine or alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine, induced typical fine structural changes corresponding to those observed after surgical sympathectomy.     

Basic haematological values in carnivores--I. The Canidae, the Hyaenidae and the Ursidae

Basic haematological values for 32 animals of four carnivore species are reported. In six adult wolves (Canis lupus) the mean values estimated for the erythrocyte count 7.48 X 10(12)/l, haematocrit 0.465/l, haemoglobin 172.0 g/l and leukocyte counts 7.33 X 10(9)/l are given. For five young wolves, these parameters were markedly decreased, only the white cell count was raised. In 14 hunting dogs (Lycaon pictus) the mean values estimated are: erythrocyte count 9.15 x 10(12)/l haematocrit 0.435/l, haemoglobin 179.2 g/l and leukocytes 12.95 X 10(9)/l. In six striped hyaenas (Hyaena hyaena) the mean estimated values are: erythrocyte count 8.11 X 10(12)/l, haemoatocrit 0.445/l, haemoglobin 178.0 g/l and leukocytes 13.95 X 10(9)/l. Only individual values for the reported parameters are given in the Asiatic black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus). All results are compared with values derived from the literature for animals under investigation and for the domestic dog (Canis familiaris).     

Effect of acute exercise on some haematological parameters and neutrophil functions in active and inactive subjects

In this work we studied the possible effects of acute exercise on some haematological parameters and on some functions of neutrophils in seven active and six inactive subjects. Physical exercise (10 min on a cycle ergometer at a heart rate of 150 beats · min^–1) induced a significant increase in total leucocyte, lymphocyte and neutrophil concentrations in active subjects; serum iron and ferritin concentrations were lower in active compared to inactive subjects. Cellular adhesion, bactericidal activity and superoxide anion production did not change after exercise, while we also observed some differences between active and inactive subjects before exercise. In particular, the neutrophils from active subjects showed a significantly higher percentage of adhesion, higher bactericidal activity and lower superoxide anion production. In conclusion, the training induced changes in some neutrophil functions, while acute exercise influenced, overall, leucocyte concentrations.
