The morphological variation in the annual killifish Austrolebias luteoflamulatus was studied using meristic and pigmentation characters analysed with univariate and multivariate analysis, and morphometric characters analysed with a geometric morphometry approach (thin plate spline). The results showed that morphological variation in this species was associated with a geographical pattern. In the case of meristic and pigmentation characters, the strongest distinction occured in males, while females were more similar among different drainages. Males from Rocha (eastern Uruguay) exhibited the greatest differences from the others. The number of dorsal fin rays and bars on the flanks were the characters that contributed most to this segregation. When morphometrics were considered, the three populations analysed could be distinguished well from each other in both sexes. Some of the characters that contributed to this pattern were dorsal fin origin, position of eyes and length of snout. Since pigmentation characteristics and some characters of the dorsal fin in males were involved in the differences observed, sexual selection could have played an important role in the differentiation of populations of this species. Since Austrolebias luteoflamulatus has a restricted geographical distribution, conservation of this species should include consideration of these populations individually since they might represent different evolutionary units.  相似文献

A morphometric truss network system and meristic counts were used to investigate the hypothesis of population fragmentation of pikeperch Sander lucioperca among four major fishing areas in the Caspian Sea drainage. Univariate analysis of variance showed significant differences between the means of the four groups for 20 out of 32 standardized morphometric measurements (27 truss, five traditional characters) and six out of nine meristic counts. The first two canonical discriminant functions accounted for 93 and 92.3% of the total variability in morphometric and meristic characteristics, respectively. A dendogram derived from cluster analysis of Mahalanobis distances and a discriminant analysis among the groups confirmed three distinct populations in these regions, while there was a relatively high degree of overlap between all locations when using meristic characters. The most relevant morphometric characteristics were the measured distances on body heights and the caudal peduncle area. This study indicated that the morphometric truss network system was more adequate than meristic characters for separation among the populations.  相似文献

The amount of osteological variation among 11 Italian killifish Aphanius fasciatus populations was examined by the univariate and multivariate analysis of 40 morphometric and meristic variables of the skull and vertebral column. Populations were sampled in three geographically distinct areas (the Adriatic, Sardinia and Sicily). The statistical analysis confirmed that several populations were well differentiated. In particular, discriminant analysis revealed a strong discriminating power of the morphometric variables. Morphometrics of the vertebrae, bony elements of the pharyngeal jaws, supraoccipital and parasphenoid were the most important in discriminating populations. The dendrogram obtained by UPGMA cluster analysis shows the separation of the south-eastern Sicilian populations, that of the Sardinian populations and that of the central-northern Sicilian plus Adriatic populations, as well as the isolation of the Sicilian population from Pantano Viruca and of the Sardinian populations from Pauli Figu from all the others. The significance of the observed differentiation pattern is discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the morphological variation of brown trout (Salmo trutta) in the Duero basin, an Atlantic river basin in the Iberian Peninsula, where a spatial segregation of two divergent lineages was previously reported, based on isozyme, microsatellite and mtDNA data. In these studies, two divergent pure regions (Pisuerga and Lower-course) and several hybrid populations between them were identified. Morphological variation was evaluated in 11 populations representative of the genetic differentiation previously observed in the Duero basin, using multivariate analysis on 12 morphometric and 4 meristic traits. A large differentiation between populations was observed (interpopulation component of variance: 41.8%), similar to that previously detected with allozymes and microsatellites. Morphometric differentiation was also reflected by the high classification success of pure and hybrid individuals to their respective populations, using multivariate discriminant functions (94.1% and 79.0%, respectively). All multivariate and clustering analyses performed demonstrated a strong differentiation between the pure regions. The hybrid populations, though showing large differentiation among them, evidenced an intermediate position between the pure samples. Head and body shape traits were the most discriminant among the morphometric characters, while pectoral rays and gillrakers were the most discriminant among the meristic traits. These results confirmed the high divergence of the brown trout from the Duero basin and suggest some traits on which selection could be acting to explain the spatial segregation observed.  相似文献

The Chirostoma "humboldtianum" group includes seven silverside species considered as a monophyletic assemblage because of their high genetic and morphological similarities. The group includes five moderately large species, "peces blancos" (117-300 mm standard length--SL) and two smaller species, "charales" (70-142 mm SL). These species are of great economical, cultural and ichthyological interest for local populations, and their management practices are controversial. We investigated the morphometric, meristic and allozyme variations of the seven species (13 populations) and related the variations with life history, habitat and management procedures. Nineteen morphometric variables, eight meristic variables (by multivariate analysis) and 23 allozyme loci of the seven species and populations of Chirostoma were compared. Principal component analysis (PC) of morphometric and meristic data indicate that both sets of data provided information to differentiate among the seven species. The variables that accounted for most of this differentiation were head length (HL), predorsal 1 length (PIL) and length of pelvic fin base (PfbL). PC and Discriminant Analysis (DA) with morphometric data also suggested the differentiation of populations within C. grandocule (83% correctly classified organisms), whereas PC and DA with meristic data differentiated populations of C. humboldtianum (80% correctly classified organisms). The most important morphometric variables for the differentiation were anal fin height (AfH), length of anal fin base (AfbL) and predorsal 2 length (P2L) and the meristic variables D2fR. PdS and AfR. The genetic variability data indicate changes in values of some of the species in relation to previously reported data. The present populations of C. grandocule show a reduction in He (0.002 vs. 0.009). Other species showed an increase; for instance, C. consocium consocium, C. humboldtianum, C. lucius, C. promelas and C. sphyraena averaged He = 0.069 vs 0.027. theta indicated significant genetic differentiation among the analysed species (0.247, S.D. 0.159) and theta s supported the morphological data that suggest intra-specific differentiation (0.360, S. Morphological variation in five meristic and 21 morphometric characters was examined in the brown trout, Salmo trutta L., from seven distinct streams and rivers from N and NW Greece. Variation within each sample, estimated as the multivariate generalization of the coefficient of variation, did not vary substantially among the populations. The phenetic relationships of these populations were examined using the stepwise discriminant analysis. The taxonomic implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The study addresses the effect of hatchery rearing on morphological variation and developmental stability of Atlantic salmon parr from North‐West Russia. Totally, we collected nine samples. Four wild samples were collected from each of the rivers Kola, Umba, Keret’ and Shuia. Five samples of hatchery‐reared parr were the first‐generation progeny of wild adults from these rivers reared separately at the four hatcheries (one hatchery was represented by two samples). Ten meristic and 48 morphometric cranial characters were analysed. We studied the morphological divergence between wild and hatchery fishes of the same river of origin. To analyze developmental stability we used fluctuating asymmetry (random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry). It was found that hatchery‐reared parr significantly differ from wild parr in both meristic characters and the shape of cranial bones. Different hatcheries caused similar effect on morphological variation in all populations. Fluctuating asymmetry in morphometric characters was significantly higher in hatchery fish than in wild from the Shuia River, indicating a higher level of developmental instability. However, wild parr from the Keret’ River had significantly higher fluctuating asymmetry than cultivated parr of the same origin, possible due to a high infection pressure of the parasite Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg which has led to significant decline of the wild salmon population in this river, or from genetic changes caused by cultivation. The obtained results indicate a notable effect of hatchery environment on Atlantic salmon’s phenotype.  相似文献

Morphological character variation was examined in Atherinops affinis , a temperate marine silverside with a broad geographic range and presumed limited powers of dispersal. Populations of this species were sampled from three California mainland sites, one Channel Island site and one site in the upper Gulf of California. A geometric morphometric analysis yielded higher resolution in the assessment of phenotypic divergence among the four Pacific coast populations than either body measurement or meristic analysis, and it showed that most of the shape variation among these populations occurs in the head region and body depth of the fish. All three analyses supported the hypothesis that populations of A. affinis from central and southern California coastal waters and from Santa Catalina Island are morphologically distinct from each other; the Santa Catalina Island population was found to be the most divergent. On the basis of meristic characters alone, the population of A. affinis from the upper Gulf of California was different from A. affinis populations along the Pacific coast of California. The analyses revealed variation in several morphological characters, e.g . body depth and meristics, known to vary in association with environmental conditions. Given that A. affinis appears to have low among‐population genetic variation, this species may be phenotypically plastic in response to the environmental conditions of the habitat of each population.  相似文献

In Mexico, the tilapia Oreochromis provides one of the most important sources of animal protein and income in a wide variety of communities throughout the country, however, their culture and production face severe problems because of lack of management information. Evaluated in the present study is the degree of morphological, meristic and allozyme variation of two tilapia strains, two species and one hybrid from two important reservoirs in Mexico, two tilapia fry production farms (TFPF) and an experimental production system (EPS), to diagnose the actual status and degree of variation among them. Twenty‐two presumptive loci were utilized to determine the genetic variation, structuring and distances among samples. Multivariate analyses of 11 meristic and 33 morphometric characters were also evaluated, including the distance from the end of the mouth opening to the most anterior dorsal fin (0.9894), distance from the anal fin base to the anterior part of the caudal fin (0.9845) and the base length of the dorsal fin (0.9839) which contributed to the separation of groups. The canonical discriminant functions for the morphometric and meristic variables show that the correct classification of the organisms in percentages and in the sites of origin was on average 72%. The tilapia from the reservoirs and the experimental production system had higher genetic variations than tilapia from the fry production farms (average He 0.310, 0.062, 0.151 for Metztitlan, Infiernillo and EPS, respectively, vs 0.024 and 0.000 for Los Amates and Zacatepec, respectively). The genetic data indicate that fishes of the TFPF should be monitored closely, as they are the main source of dispersion to the reservoirs. Present results show that these data could be a fast and reliable aid to the fisheries and management of tilapia in Mexico.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation in two populations of the White Sea herring Clupea pallasi marisalbi (Berg) (spring spawners and summer spawners), based on 21 meristic and 21 morphometric bilateral characters, has been studied. Total phenotypic variance was partitioned into a within-individual or stochastic component (fluctuating asymmetry) and an among-individual or factorial component, reflecting heterogeneity among individuals and resulting from the diversity of genotypes and environments. Both standardized stochastic and factorial components show clear negative correlations with means across characters. Negative correlation of the factorial components with means is in contradiction to the commonly accepted explanation of negative means-standardized variances association. Slopes of regression of standardized stochastic variances on means in meristic characters was significantly higher in summer spawners than in spring spawners, and results in discordance of stochastic variance across characters: it is higher in spring spawners for low and average variability characters and does not differ for both populations for high variability characters. The populations do not show notable differences in variation of morphometric characters. Consideration of other available data on these populations, such as spawning behaviour and salinity resistance of larvae, suggests that the lower slope of regression of stochastic variances on means is associated with the reduced viability of spring spawners  相似文献

Characterization, management and protection of biodiversity are the most prominent challenges in conservation biology. Analyses on molecular similarity (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA-Polymerase Chain Reaction, RAPD-PCR) and morphologic patterns (morphometric and meristic characters) were performed to evaluate the existence of population structuring in the Doce river basin, in a widespread small-sized characin, Astyanax bimaculatus. Three hundred (300) individuals were collected from six locations isolated by waterfalls or dams, in the Doce river basin, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Genetic differentiation among tributaries was significant (p<0.00001) and accounted for 21% of total variance (p<0.00001). Only the Grande waterfall of the Casca river was an effective factor for differentiation of populations (p<0.00001), and meristic characters were also consistent with molecular data. We concluded that genetic and morphologic variation of this species was not necessarily associated with waterfalls and that molecular and meristic data are effective predictors of population divergence in this basin. The consequences of these findings for the protection and management of aquatic biodiversity were discussed.  相似文献

A study was made to determine the extent of morphological variation in Planococcoides jalensis (Laing), the most important mealybug vector of cocoa swollen shoot virus (CSSV) in West Africa, and to resolve if more than one Planococcoides species is present. Fourteen populations of P. njalensis collected on cocoa from different localities in Ghana and one population each on Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Steud and Coffea canephora Pierre were compared by measured and meristic female characters using two types of morphometric analysis, Discriminant Functional Analysis and Principal Component Analysis. The analyses showed that P. njalensis exhibited a wide range of intraspecific morphological variation, particularly in meristic characters, but failed to identify new Planococcoides species. The results are discussed in relation to the control of the mealybug vectors of CSSV and to the suitability of Gliricidia as a shade tree for cocoa.  相似文献

The Indian oil sardine, Sardinella longiceps, is an important pelagic species in Indian waters, and shows divergent morphology while in sympatry. The reasons behind this divergent morphology were investigated using morphometric, genetic and nutritional analyses. Twenty‐one morphometric characters (as percentage of standard length) and eight meristic characters were studied in the three variants to assess whether they are significantly diverged. Distinct clustering of morphotypes was evident in the principal component analysis on log‐transformed ratios of morphological characters with PC1 and PC2, explaining 50.7% and 17.6% of the total morphological variation, respectively. PC1 was highly correlated with the distance from snout to anal origin, depth at dorsal, distance from snout to pelvic and distance from snout to first dorsal. PC2 was highly correlated with head length, caudal width and anal depth. Analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) was conducted using log‐transformed morphometric ratios, with the results showing the clusters to be well differentiated (R = 0.511; P < 0.01). Similarity of percentage analysis (SIMPER) analysis showed that the differences in depth at the dorsal, anal base length, caudal width, distance from pelvic to anal origin, anal depth and eye diameter accounted for 52% of variations between variant 1 and 2. Differences in caudal width, distance from pelvic to anal origin, anal base length, depth at dorsal and anal depth accounted for 56% of the variation between variant 2 and 3. Differences in caudal width, eye diameter, anal base length, anal depth, distance from pelvic to anal origin accounted for 50% of the variation between variant 1 and 3. Genetic divergence was not significantly based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) or control region sequences. Proximate composition analyses showed significantly high fat content in variants 1&3 and significantly high protein content in variant 2, probably due to dissimilar dietary preferences. The study shows that morphotypes of the Indian oil sardine may be the result of divergent selection and adaptive variations, which need further investigation using a long‐term sampling design.  相似文献

Morphometric and meristic characteristics were compared between two genetically divergent groups ofLethenteron reissneri, collected from Hokkaido and Honshu islands, Japan. Whereas significant differences were found in some morphometric and meristic characters, the ranges overlapped somewhat in all of the characters examined between the two groups. Thus, it was difficult to distinguish exactly between the two groups using only the morphological characters. In sympatric populations of the two groups, no significant differences were found in almost all of the morphometric and meristic characters examined. The two groups ofL. reissneri, which are reproductively isolated from each other, should be regarded as sibling species. Assortative mating, based on morphological features, appears unlikely as the reproductive isolating mechanism between the two groups.  相似文献

Gobiocypris rarus, a small, native cyprinid fish, is currently widely used in research on fish pathology, genetics, toxicology, embryology, and physiology in China. To develop this species as a model laboratory animal, inbred strains have been successfully created. In this study, to explore a method to discriminate inbred strains and evaluate inbreeding effects, morphological variation among three wild populations and three inbred stocks of G. rarus was investigated by the multivariate analysis of eight meristic and 30 morphometric characters. Tiny intraspecific variations in meristic characters were found, but these were not effective for population distinction. Stepwise discriminant analysis and cluster analysis of conventional measures and truss network data showed considerable divergence among populations, especially between wild populations and inbred stocks. The average discriminant accuracy for all populations was 82.1% based on conventional measures and 86.4% based on truss data, whereas the discriminant accuracy for inbred strains was much higher. These results suggested that multivariate analyses of morphometric characters are an effective method for discriminating inbred strains of G. rarus. Morphological differences between wild populations and inbred strains appear to result from both genetic differences and environmental factors. Thirteen characters, extracted from stepwise discriminant analysis, played important roles in morphological differentiation. These characters were mainly measures related to body depth and head size.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to compare the morphological variability of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus L.) larvae from the main Portuguese river basins. Samples were collected in rivers Minho, Lima, Cávado, Vouga, Mondego, Tejo and Guadiana. Specimens were analysed in terms of morphometric (linear body measures) and meristic (number of myomeres) characters to investigate the hypothesis of population fragmentation between river basins caused by some degree of homing behaviour. The discriminant analysis showed a morphological segregation of the studied populations based on the characters head, tail and branchial length. The discriminatory power of the meristic characters was comparatively weaker, with the number of trunk myomeres, and to some extent the head myomeres, being responsible for the reduced separation between groups. Both analyses were consistent in identifying the cephalic region as the most important morphological feature to discriminate populations of sea lamprey larvae in the Portuguese territory. The largest cephalic region of the ammocoetes sampled in the northern river basins may be responsible for a better feeding efficiency and, consequently, higher values of condition factor. The effect of temperature, nutrition, and density stresses on phenotypic and genetic variation in morphological traits (thorax length, wing length, number of sternopleural and abdominal bristles, and number of arista branches) was examined in Drosophila melanogaster. In addition, the effect of stress on developmental stability measured as fluctuation asymmetry of bilateral traits was analyzed. All of the stresses were shown to increase phenotypic variation and fluctuating asymmetry of bilateral traits. Genetic variation of morphometric traits estimated using the isofemale line technique was higher under stressful than under normal conditions. Biotic and abiotic stresses were similar in their effect on phenotypic and genetic variation. The effect of stress on variability of morphometric traits was generally higher than on that of meristic traits. Possible causes of the increase of genetic variation under stress are discussed.  相似文献
