The nonlinearity of lung tissues and airways was studied in six anesthetized and paralyzed open-chest dogs by means of 0.1-Hz sinusoidal volume forcing at mean transpulmonary pressures (Ptp) of 5 and 10 cmH2O. Lung resistance (RL) and elastance (EL) were determined in a 32-fold range (15-460 ml) of tidal volume (VT), both by means of spectrum analysis at the fundamental frequency and with conventional time-domain techniques. Alveolar capsules were used to separate the tissue and airway properties. A very small amplitude dependence was found: with increasing VT, the frequency-domain estimates of RL decreased by 5.3 and 14%, whereas EL decreased by 20 and 22% at Ptp = 5 and 10 cmH2O, respectively. The VT dependences of the time-domain estimates of RL were higher: 10.5 and 20% at Ptp = 5 and 10 cmH2O, respectively, whereas EL remained the same. The airway resistance increased moderately with flow amplitude and was smaller at the higher Ptp level. Analysis of the harmonic distortions of airway opening pressure and the alveolar pressures indicated that nonlinear harmonic production is moderate even at the highest VT and that VT dependence is homogeneous throughout the tissues. In three other dogs it was demonstrated that VT dependences of RL and EL were similar in situ and in isolated lungs at both Ptp levels.  相似文献

Production mechanism of crackles in excised normal canine lungs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lung crackles may be produced by the opening of small airways or by the sudden expansion of alveoli. We studied the generation of crackles in excised canine lobes ventilated in an airtight box. Total airflow, transairway pressure (Pta), transpulmonary pressure (Ptp), and crackles were recorded simultaneously. Crackles were produced only during inflation and had high-peak frequencies (738 +/- 194 Hz, mean +/- SD). During inflation, crackles were produced from 111 +/- 83 ms (mean +/- SD) prior to the negative peak of Pta, presumably when small airways began to open. When end-expiratory Ptp was set constant between 15 and 20 cmH2O and end-expiratory Ptp was gradually reduced from 5 cmH2O to -15 or -20 cmH2O in a breath-by-breath manner, crackles were produced in the cycles in which end-expiratory Ptp fell below -1 to 1 cmH2O. This pressure was consistent with previously known airway closing pressures. When end-expiratory Ptp was set constant at -10 cmH2O and end inspiratory Ptp was gradually increased from -5 to 15 or 20 cmH2O, crackles were produced in inspiratory phase in which end-inspiratory Ptp exceeded 4-6 cmH2O. This pressure was consistent with previously known airway opening pressures. These results indicate that crackles in excised normal dog lungs are produced by opening of peripheral airways and are not generated by the sudden inflation of groups of alveoli.  相似文献

We previously demonstrated that airway responsiveness is greater in immature than in mature rabbits; however, it is not known whether there are maturational differences in the effect of transpulmonary pressure (Ptp) on airway size and airway responsiveness. The relationship between Ptp and airway diameter was assessed in excised lungs insufflated with tantalum powder. Diameters of comparable intraparenchymal airway segments were measured from radiographs obtained at Ptp between 0 and 20 cmH(2)O. At Ptp > 8 cmH(2)O, the diameters were near maximal in both groups. With diameter normalized to its maximal value, changing Ptp between 8 and 0 cmH(2)O resulted in a greater decline of airway caliber in immature than mature airways. The increases in lung resistance (RL) in vivo at Ptp of 8, 5, and 2 cmH(2)O were measured during challenge with intravenous methacholine (MCh: 0.001-0.5 mg/kg). At Ptp of 8 cmH(2)O, both groups had very small responses to MCh and the maximal fold increases in RL did not differ (1.93 +/- 0.29 vs. 2.23 +/- 0.19). At Ptp of 5 and 2 cmH(2)O, the fold increases in RL were greater for immature than mature animals (13.19 +/- 1.81 vs. 3.89 +/- 0.37) and (17.74 +/- 2.15 vs. 4.6 +/- 0.52), respectively. We conclude that immature rabbits have greater airway distensibility and this difference may contribute to greater airway narrowing in immature compared with mature rabbits.  相似文献

We examined the effects of elastase-induced emphysema on lung volumes, pulmonary mechanics, and airway responses to inhaled methacholine (MCh) of nine male Brown Norway rats. Measurements were made before and weekly for 4 wk after elastase in five rats. In four rats measurements were made before and at 3 wk after elastase; in these same animals the effects of changes in end-expiratory lung volume on the airway responses to MCh were evaluated before and after elastase. Airway responses were determined from peak pulmonary resistance (RL) calculated after 30-s aerosolizations of saline and doubling concentrations of MCh from 1 to 64 mg/ml. Porcine pancreatic elastase (1 IU/g) was administered intratracheally. Before elastase RL rose from 0.20 +/- 0.02 cmH2O.ml-1.s (mean +/- SE; n = 9) to 0.57 +/- 0.06 after MCh (64 mg/ml). A plateau was observed in the concentration-response curve. Static compliance and the maximum increase in RL (delta RL64) were significantly correlated (r = 0.799, P less than 0.01). Three weeks after elastase the maximal airway response to MCh was enhanced and no plateau was observed; delta RL64 was 0.78 +/- 0.07 cmH2O.ml-1.s, significantly higher than control delta RL64 (0.36 +/- 0.7, P less than 0.05). Before elastase, increase of end-expiratory lung volume to functional residual capacity + 1.56 ml (+/- 0.08 ml) significantly reduced RL at 64 mg MCh/ml from 0.62 +/- 0.05 cmH2O.ml-1.s to 0.50 +/- 0.03, P less than 0.05.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The major purpose of this study was to determine whether the longitudinal distribution of pulmonary vascular pressures changes with postnatal age in rabbits. Using the direct micropuncture technique, we measured pressures in 20- to 80-microns-diam arterioles and venules in isolated lungs of rabbits of different postnatal ages. To determine the contribution of vasomotor tone, we added the vasodilator papaverine to the perfusate of some lungs of each age group. We compared vascular pressures measured at blood flow rates chosen to approximate in vivo cardiac outputs. In untreated lungs, the resistance across 20- to 80-microns-diam microvessels decreased from 12- to 72-h-old (0.022 +/- 0.009 cmH2O.min.kg.ml-1) to 5- to 15-day-old rabbits (0.008 +/- 0.007 cmH2O.min.kg.ml-1) and remained at this lower level in adults (0.013 +/- 0.008 cmH2O.min.kg.ml-1). In contrast, in papaverine-treated lungs, the resistance across 20- to 80-microns-diam microvessels did not change between 12- to 72-h-old (0.007 +/- 0.005 cmH2O.min.kg.ml-1) and 5- to 15-day-old rabbits (0.005 +/- 0.002 cmH2O.min.kg.ml-1) but increased between 5- to 15-day-old and adult rabbits (0.014 +/- 0.007 cmH2O.min.kg.ml-1). Thus vasomotor tone contributed to the postnatal change in the distribution of vascular pressures across lungs of rabbits.  相似文献

To elucidate whether deep inhalation (DI) modulates changes in airway caliber in childhood, we measured the effect of DI on respiratory impedance before and after inhaled methacholine or salbutamol in 4- to 7-yr-old children (n = 15) suffering from recurrent wheezing. In all children, the real part of impedance between 12 and 16 Hz (Re[Z](12-16)) increased after methacholine from 5.6 +/- 1.2 to 8.2 +/- 1.6 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s (P < 0.001) and resonance frequency from 18 +/- 3 to 25 +/- 5 Hz (P < 0.001). These changes were partially reversed by DI: Re[Z](12-16) decreased to 7.2 +/- 1.2 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s (P < 0.01) and resonance frequency to 19 +/- 5 Hz (P < 0.001). In nine children, on a separate occasion, Re[Z](12-16) decreased after salbutamol from 8.3 +/- 1.9 to 5.1 +/- 0.9 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s (P < 0.001) and resonance frequency from 21 +/- 6 to 15 +/- 3 Hz (P < 0.05). The decrease of Re[Z](12-16) was partially reversed by DI (to 6.2 +/- 1.4 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s, P < 0. 01), but resonance frequency did not change significantly (P = 0.75). We conclude that in 4- to 7-yr-old children pharmacologically induced changes in airway caliber are modulated by DI. These findings suggest that airway-to-parenchyma interdependence is operative in this age range.  相似文献

When the whole body is exposed to sinusoidal variations of ambient pressure (delta Pam) at very low frequencies (f), the resulting compression and expansion of alveolar gas is almost entirely achieved by gas flow through the airways (Vaw). As a consequence thoracic gas volume (TGV) may be computed from the imaginary part (Im) of the delta Pam/Vaw relationship: TGV = PB/[2 pi f X Im(delta Pam/Vaw)], where PB is barometric minus alveolar water vapor pressure. The method was tested in 35 normal subjects and compared with body plethysmography. The subjects sat in a chamber connected to a large-stroke-volume reciprocating pump that brought about pressure swings of 40 cmH2O at 0.05 Hz. delta Pam and Vaw were digitally processed by fast Fourier transform to extract the low-frequency component from the much larger respiratory flow. Total lung capacities (TLC) obtained by ambient pressure changes and by plethylsmography were highly correlated (r = 0.959, p less than 0.001) and not significantly different (6.96 +/- 1.38 l vs. 6.99 +/- 1.38). TLC obtained by ambient pressure changes were not influenced by lowering the frequency to 0.03 Hz, adding an external resistance at the mouth, or increasing abdominal gas volume. We conclude that the method is practical and in agreement with body plethysmography in normal subjects.  相似文献

If the lung is an elastic continuum, both longitudinal and transverse stress waves should be propagated in the medium with distinct velocities. In five isolated sheep lungs, we investigated the propagation of stress waves. The lungs were degassed and then inflated to a constant transpulmonary pressure (Ptp). We measured signals transmitted at locations approximately 1.5, 6, and 11 cm from an impulse surface distortion with the use of small microphones embedded in the pleural surface. Two transit times were computed from the first two significant peaks of the cross-correlation of microphone signal pairs. The "fast" wave velocities averaged 301 +/- 92, 445 +/- 80, and 577 +/- 211 (SD) cm/s for Ptp values of 5, 10, and 15 cmH2O, respectively. Corresponding "slow" wave velocities averaged 139 +/- 22, 217 +/- 36, and 255 +/- 89 cm/s. The fast waves were consistent with longitudinal waves of velocity [(K + 4G/3)/p]1/2, where bulk modulus K = 4 Ptp and shear modulus G = 0.7 Ptp. The slow waves were consistent with transverse (and/or Rayleigh) waves of velocity (G/p)1/2, with a G value of 0.9 Ptp. Measured values of K were 5 Ptp and values of G measured by indentation tests were 0.7 Ptp. Thus, stress wave velocities measured on pleural surface of isolated lungs correlated well with elastic moduli of lung parenchyma.  相似文献

Previous resistive load detection (RLD) studies have ignored the nose, the usual route of breathing. Weber's law predicts the delta R50 (the added load detectable on 50% of presentations) to be a fixed percent of the background resistance (R0) and thus the delta R50/R0 ratio (the Weber fraction) is constant. We have noted the nose to be sensitive to added load, we wondered if the nose might play a role in RLD. To determine whether this was true and to characterize the effects of changes in R0 in the range of normal nasal resistance (RN), we determined R0 and delta R50 using standard techniques under the following conditions: nose vs. decongested nose, nose vs. nose with added external R0 (3.0 and 8.0 cmH2O X l-1 X s), nose vs. anesthetized nose, nose vs. mouth, and mouth vs. mouth with added load (3 cmH2O X l-1 X s). We found that decongestant decreased RN [4.3 +/- 0.6 (SE) to 3.1 +/- 0.5 cmH2O X l-1 X s, P less than 0.05] and delta R50 (1.7 +/- 0.5 to 1.1 +/- 0.3 cmH2O X l-1 X s, P less than 0.05). When an external load of 3 cmH2O X l-1 X s was added to the nose, delta R50 did not change significantly (1.4 +/- 0.2 to 1.1 +/- 0.2 cmH2O X l-1 X s), but the Weber fraction decreased (0.28 +/- 0.05 to 0.15 +/- 0.03, P less than 0.02).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We measured the effective resistance (Reff) and elastance (Eeff) of the chest wall in four subjects, relaxed at functional residual capacity (FRC), during sinusoidal volume changes (5% vital capacity up to 4 Hz) delivered at the mouth. Subjects sat in a head-out body plethysmograph, and transthoracic pressure was measured with an esophageal balloon. Changes in Reff and in Eeff with frequency were nearly the same in all subjects. Reff (in cmH2O X l-1 X s) was 2.9 +/- 0.8 at 0.2 Hz and fell sharply to minimum values (0.5-0.9) at 1-4 Hz. Eeff (in cmH2O X l-1) increased from approximately 10 at the lowest frequency to a plateau of about 15 at 1-3 Hz and decreased above 3 Hz. In the same subjects, we measured the relative magnitude and phase between the displacements of different parts of the chest wall with magnetometers during identical sinusoidal forcing. Results indicate that the chest wall expands and deflates uniformly at frequencies up to 1 Hz. Thereafter the abdomen makes relatively larger excursions, and the relative magnitude and phase of displacement at different points on the chest wall show complex changes. We conclude that the frequency dependence of Reff and Eeff below 1 Hz is not due to nonuniformities in displacement of different parts of the chest wall. The frequency dependency of Reff is consistent with an increasing contribution of rate-independent plastic dissipation to the pressure difference in phase with flow as breathing frequency decreases.  相似文献

In five spontaneously breathing anesthetized subjects [halothane approximately 1 minimal alveolar concentration (MAC), 70% N2O, 30% O2], flow, changes in lung volume, and esophageal and airway opening pressure were measured in order to partition the elastance (Ers) and flow resistance (Rrs) of the total respiratory system into the lung and chest wall components. Ers averaged (+/- SD) 23.0 +/- 4.9 cmH2O X l-1, while the corresponding values of pulmonary (EL) and chest wall (EW) elastance were 14.3 +/- 3.2 and 8.7 +/- 3.0 cmH2O X l-1, respectively. Intrinsic Rrs (upper airways excluded) averaged 2.3 +/- 0.2 cmH2O X l-1 X s, the corresponding values for pulmonary (RL) and chest wall (RW) flow resistance amounting to 0.8 +/- 0.4 and 1.5 +/- 0.5 cmH2O X l-1 X s, respectively. Ers increased relative to normal values in awake state, mainly reflecting increased EL. Rw was higher than previous estimates on awake seated subjects (approximately 1.0 cmH2O X l-1 X s). RL was relatively low, reflecting the fact that the subjects had received atropine (0.3-0.6 mg) and were breathing N2O. This is the first study in which both respiratory elastic and flow-resistive properties have been partitioned into lung and chest wall components in anesthetized humans.  相似文献

Effects of maturation and aging on collateral ventilation in sheep   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We studied collateral ventilation as a function of age by measuring the resistance (Rcoll) and time constant (Tcoll) of collateral airflow in young (2-10 mo), mature (16-24 mo), and old sheep (6-13 yr). Rcoll was 0.50 +/- 0.11 cmH2O X ml-1 X min (SE) in young sheep and decreased significantly to 0.05 +/- 0.02 and 0.02 +/- 0.01 cmH2O X ml-1 X min in mature and old sheep, respectively. Tcoll was 34.4 +/- 7.9 (SE) s in young sheep and decreased to 5.7 +/- 0.9 and 10.2 +/- 3.1 s in mature and old sheep, respectively. We conclude that a marked decrease in Rcoll and Tcoll occurs between birth and maturity but changes little with further aging. In the young an increased resistance and time constant of collateral airflow may accentuate ventilation perfusion imbalance and impair the removal of secretions in disease states.  相似文献

Flow limitation (FL) has recently been shown to be a necessary condition for the generation of forced expiratory wheezes (FEW) in normal subjects. The present study was designed to investigate whether it is also a sufficient condition. To do so we studied the effects of varying expiratory effort on generation of FEW. Six normal subjects exhaled with varying force into an orifice in line with a high-impedance suction pump. Esophageal (Pes), airway opening, and transpulmonary (Ptp) pressures were measured alongside flow rate, lung volume, and tracheal lung sounds. In each subject a certain critical degree of effort had to be attained before FEW were generated. This effort, measured as Pes at the onset of wheezes, varied among the subjects (range -11 to 45 cmH2O). Similarly, a minimal Ptp had to be reached for FEW to evolve (mean +/- SD -34 +/- 12 cmH2O, range -18 to -50 cmH2O). These critical Pes and Ptp values were significantly higher than those required for FL. It was concluded that, in addition to the requirement for FL, sufficient levels of effort and negative Ptp must exist before FEW can be generated. By analogy to experimental and theoretical results from studies on flow-induced oscillations in self-supporting collapsible tubes, it was further concluded that these pressures are required to induce flattening of the intrathoracic airways downstream from the choke point. It is this configurational change that causes air speed to become equal to or exceed the critical gas velocity needed to induce oscillations in soft-walled tubes.  相似文献

In eight anesthetized and tracheotomized rabbits, we studied the transfer impedances of the respiratory system during normocapnic ventilation by high-frequency body-surface oscillation from 3 to 15 Hz. The total respiratory impedance was partitioned into pulmonary and chest wall impedances to characterize the oscillatory mechanical properties of each component. The pulmonary and chest wall resistances were not frequency dependent in the 3- to 15-Hz range. The mean pulmonary resistance was 13.8 +/- 3.2 (SD) cmH2O.l-1.s, although the mean chest wall resistance was 8.6 +/- 2.0 cmH2O.l-1.s. The pulmonary elastance and inertance were 0.247 +/- 0.095 cmH2O/ml and 0.103 +/- 0.033 cmH2O.l-1.s2, respectively. The chest wall elastance and inertance were 0.533 +/- 0.136 cmH2O/ml and 0.041 +/- 0.063 cmH2O.l-1.s2, respectively. With a linear mechanical behavior, the transpulmonary pressure oscillations required to ventilate these tracheotomized animals were at their minimal value at 3 Hz. As the ventilatory frequency was increased beyond 6-9 Hz, both the minute ventilation necessary to maintain normocapnia and the pulmonary impedance increased. These data suggest that ventilation by body-surface oscillation is better suited for relatively moderate frequencies in rabbits with normal lungs.  相似文献

We studied the bronchial arterial blood flow (Qbr) and bronchial vascular resistance (BVR) in sheep prepared with carotid-bronchial artery shunt. Nine adult sheep were anesthetized, and through a left thoracotomy a heparinized Teflon-tipped Silastic catheter was introduced into the bronchial artery. The other end of the catheter was brought out through the chest wall and through a neck incision was introduced into the carotid artery. A reservoir filled with warm heparinized blood was connected to this shunt. The height of blood column in the reservoir was kept constant at 150 cm by adding more blood. Qbr was measured, after interrupting the carotid-bronchial artery flow, by the changes in the reservoir volume. The bronchial arterial back pressure (Pbr) was measured through the shunt when both carotid-bronchial artery and reservoir Qbr had been temporarily interrupted. The mean Qbr was 34.1 +/- 2.9 (SE) ml/min, Pbr = 17.5 +/- 3.3 cmH2O, BVR = 3.9 +/- 0.5 cmH2O X ml-1 X min, mean pulmonary arterial pressure = 21.5 +/- 3.6 cmH2O, and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (Ppcw) = 14.3 +/- 3.7 cmH2O. We further studied the effect of increased left atrial pressure on these parameters by inflating a balloon in the left atrium. The left atrial balloon inflation increased Ppcw to 25.3 +/- 3.1 cmH2O, Qbr decreased to 21.8 +/- 2.4 ml/min (P less than 0.05), and BVR increased to 5.5 +/- 1.0 cmH2O.ml-1.min (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We investigated whether inhibition of neutral endopeptidase 24.11 (NEP) and/or angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) modifies vagally induced nonadrenergic noncholinergic (NANC) airflow obstruction and airway microvascular leakage as measured by extravasation of Evans blue dye (intravenous) in anesthetized guinea pigs. We gave phosphoramidon to inhibit NEP and enalapril maleate or captopril to inhibit ACE. Animals pretreated with inhaled phosphoramidon (7.5 or 75 nmol), enalapril maleate (87 or 870 nmol), or captopril (350 nmol) reached higher peak lung resistance (RL) values (14.3 +/- 2.7, 15.7 +/- 3.8, 16.7 +/- 3.8, 11.4 +/- 1.6, and 24.6 +/- 3.5 cmH2O.ml-1.s, respectively) than saline-treated animals (5.9 +/- 1.1; P less than 0.05) after bilateral vagus nerve stimulation (5 Hz, 10 V, 10 ms, 150 s). Intravenous phosphoramidon (1 mg/kg), but not intravenous captopril (6 mg/kg), potentiated peak RL (22.9 +/- 6.9 and 7.1 +/- 1.5 cmH2O.ml-1.s, respectively). Vagal nerve stimulation (1 and 5 Hz) increased the extravasation of Evans blue dye in tracheobronchial tissues compared with sham-stimulated animals, but this was not potentiated by inhaled enzyme inhibitors or intravenous captopril. However, intravenous phosphoramidon significantly augmented the extravasation of Evans blue dye in main bronchi and intrapulmonary airways. We conclude that degradative enzymes regulate both NANC-induced airflow obstruction and airway microvascular leakage.  相似文献

At functional residual capacity, lung expansion is more uniform in the prone position than in the supine position. We examined the effect of positive airway pressure (Paw) on this position-dependent difference in lung expansion. In supine and prone rabbits postmortem, we measured alveolar size through dependent and nondependent pleural windows via videomicroscopy at Paw of 0 (functional residual capacity), 7, and 15 cmH2O. After the chest was opened, alveolar size was measured in the isolated lung at several transpulmonary pressures (Ptp) on lung deflation. Alveolar mean linear intercept (Lm) was measured from the video images taken in situ. This was compared with those measured in the isolated lung to determine Ptp in situ. In the supine position, the vertical Ptp gradient increased from 0.52 cmH2O/cm at 0 cmH2O Paw to 0.90 cmH2O/cm at 15 cmH2O Paw, while the vertical gradient in Lm decreased from 2.17 to 0.80 microns/cm. In the prone position, the vertical Ptp gradient increased from 0.06 cmH2O/cm at 0 cmH2O Paw to 0.35 cmH2O/cm at 15 cmH2O Paw, but there was no change in the vertical Lm gradient. In anesthetized paralyzed rabbits in supine and prone positions, we measured pleural liquid pressure directly at 0, 7, and 15 cmH2O Paw with dependent and nondependent rib capsules. Vertical Ptp gradients measured with rib capsules were similar to those estimated from the alveolar size measurements. Lung inflation during mechanical ventilation may reduce the vertical nonuniformities in lung expansion observed in the supine position, thereby improving gas exchange and the distribution of ventilation.  相似文献

Late response of the upper airway of the rat to inhaled antigen   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We studied the magnitude and time course of changes in upper airway resistance (Ruaw) of actively sensitized Brown-Norway rats after aerosol challenge with ovalbumin (OA). Two weeks after sensitization, eight rats were challenged by inhalation of aerosolized OA through the nose. The airway responses of these rats 5-10 h after OA challenge were compared with those of seven animals challenged with saline. Seven of eight test rats had increased Ruaw, and six displayed discrete late responses (LR). Ruaw during expiration was highly alinear so analysis was confined to Ruaw during inspiration (Ruaw,I). The Ruaw,I averaged over 5 h was 1.262 +/- 0.09 (SE) cmH2O.ml-1.s, 2.6 times the value for saline-challenged animals (0.476 +/- 0.143 cmH2O.ml-1.s), and it reached a peak value of 3.454 +/- 0.45 cmH2O.ml-1.s. The time to the peak of the LR was 446 +/- 37.3 min. The duration of the LR in the upper airway was 146 +/- 34.9 min. At the time corresponding to the peak value of Ruaw,I, the lung elastance in the test rats was double the value preceding the peak. Lung elastance was unchanged in the control group. We conclude that inhalation of antigen through the upper airway of the sensitized rat results in a substantial increase in upper airway resistance and a distinct LR. The predominant site of the change in respiratory system resistance is in the upper airway.  相似文献

We have developed a new technique to directly measure airway resistance (Raw) in small animals with a pressure-type body plethysmograph equipped with a hot-wire microflow sensor. Seventeen male golden hamsters weighing 70-84 g were studied. Change in alveolar pressure (delta PA) was calculated from total gas volume and the respired volume difference through the flow sensor between the midpoints of the tidal excursion curve, reflecting the thorax movement. The ratio of delta PA to the flow difference between those two midpoints gave Raw. Raw was compared with pulmonary resistance, and inspiratory and expiratory resistances were also compared. Raw was 0.44 +/- 0.06 (SE) cmH2O.ml-1.s. Mean of the coefficients of variation of Raw was 19.6 +/- 3.2% (SE). Raw was well correlated with pulmonary resistance (r = 0.93). We demonstrated that Raw could be directly measured in small animals with a hot-wire flow sensor and a plethysmographic technique, and the values were well correlated with previously reported pulmonary resistance.  相似文献
