Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a promising alternative to conventional wastewater treatment methods. However this process is still under-used due to its high running costs. Its main power requirement comes from aeration, which is used to supply dissolved oxygen to the micro-organisms and to maintain the solids in suspension. In addition, in submerged MBRs, aeration is used for membrane cleaning. A complex matrix links the biomass characteristics, the aeration and the oxygen transfer. These parameters can impact on each other and/or delete one another effect. In order to understand the phenomena occurring in MBRs, similar aerobic biological processes, such as fermentation, mineral industry and slurry, were investigated. This review discusses the interrelations of the biomass characteristics (solids concentration, particle size and viscosity), the aeration intensity and the oxygen transfer in MBRs.  相似文献

A novel membrane bioreactor has been used for the treatment of an industrially produced wastewater arising in the manufacture of 3-chloronitrobenzene. This wastewater is not amenable to direct biological treatment without some form pretreatment or dilution, due to the inorganic composition (pH <1, salt concentration 4% w/w) of the wastewater. In the membrane bioreactor, the organic pollutants are first separated from the wastewater by selective membrane permeation, and then biodegraded in the biological growth compartment of the bioreactor. At a wastewater flow rate of 64 mL h(-1) (corresponding to a contact time of approximately 1.7 hours) over 99% of the 3-chloronitrobenzene and over 99% of the nitrobenzene in the wastewater were degraded. Degradation of 3-chloronitrobenzene was accompanied by evolution of chloride ions in a stoichiometric ratio. Both 3-chloronitrobenzene and nitrobenzene degradation were accompanied by the evolution of carbon dioxide; approximately 80% of the carbon entering the system was oxidized to CO(2) carbon. Analysis of mass transport across the membrane revealed that 3-chloronitrobenzene and nitrobenzene are transported more rapidly than phenol. This is explained in terms of a resistances-in-series model, which shows phenol transfer to be rate limited by the membrane diffusion step, whereas the chloronitrobenzene and nitrobenzene transfer are rate limited by the liquid film mass transfer. A novel type of bioreactor for waste gas treatment has been designed. The reactor contains a microporous hydrophobic membrane to create a large interface between the waste gas and the aqueous phase. To test the new reactor, propene was chosen because of its high air/water partition coefficient, which causes a low water concentration and hampers its removal from air. Propene transfer from air to a suspension of propene-utilizing Xanthobacter Py2 cells in the membrane bioreactor proved to be controlled by mass transfer in the liquid phase. The resistance of the membrane was negligible. Simulated propene transfer rates agreed well with the experimental data. A stable biofilm of Xanthobacter Py2 developed on the membrane during prolonged operation. The propene flux into the biofilm was 1 x 10(-6) mol m(-2) s(-1) at a propene concentration of 9.3 x 10(-2) mol m(-3) in the gas phase. (c) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Membrane process for biological treatment of contaminated gas streams   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A hollow fiber membrane bioreactor was investigated for control of air emissions of biodegradable volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the membrane bioreactor, gases containing VOCs pass through the lumen of microporous hydrophobic hollow fiber membranes. Soluble compounds diffuse through the membrane pores and partition into a VOC degrading biofilm. The hollow fiber membranes serve as a support for the microbial population and provide a large surface area for VOC and oxygen mass transfer. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of toluene loading rate, gas residence time, and liquid phase turbulence on toluene removal in a laboratory-scale membrane bioreactor. Initial acclimation of the microbial culture to toluene occurred over a period of nine days, after which a 70% removal efficiency was achieved at an inlet toluene concentration of 200 ppm and a gas residence time of 1.8 s (elimination capacity of 20 g m-3 min-1). At higher toluene loading rates, a maximum elimination capacity of 42 g m-3 min-1 was observed. In the absence of a biofilm (abiotic operation), mass transfer rates were found to increase with increasing liquid recirculation rates. Abiotic mass transfer coefficients could be estimated using a correlation of dimensionless parameters developed for heat transfer. Liquid phase recirculation rate had no effect on toluene removal when the biofilm was present, however. Three models of the reactor were created: a numeric model, a first-order flat sheet model, and a zero-order flat sheet model. Only the numeric model fit the data well, although removal predicted as a function of gas residence time disagreed slightly with that observed. A modification in the model to account for membrane phase resistance resulted in an underprediction of removal. Sensitivity analysis of the numeric model indicated that removal was a strong function of the liquid phase biomass density and biofilm diffusion coefficient, with diffusion rates below 10(-9) m2 s-1 resulting in decreased removal rates.  相似文献

Several biotreatmemt techniques for sulfate conversion by the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) have been proposed in the past, however few of them have been practically applied to treat sulfate containing acid mine drainage (AMD). This research deals with development of an innovative polypropylene hollow fiber membrane bioreactor system for the treatment of acid mine water from the Berkeley Pit, Butte, MT, using hydrogen consuming SRB biofilms. The advantages of using the membrane bioreactor over the conventional tall liquid phase sparged gas bioreactor systems are: large microporous membrane surface to the liquid phase; formation of hydrogen sulfide outside the membrane, preventing the mixing with the pressurized hydrogen gas inside the membrane; no requirement of gas recycle compressor; membrane surface is suitable for immobilization of active SRB, resulting in the formation of biofilms, thus preventing washout problems associated with suspended culture reactors; and lower operating costs in membrane bioreactors, eliminating gas recompression and gas recycle costs. Information is provided on sulfate reduction rate studies and on biokinetic tests with suspended SRB in anaerobic digester sludge and sediment master culture reactors and with SRB biofilms in bench-scale SRB membrane bioreactors. Biokinetic parameters have been determined using biokinetic models for the master culture and membrane bioreactor systems. Data are presented on the effect of acid mine water sulfate loading at 25, 50, 75 and 100 ml/min in scale-up SRB membrane units, under varied temperatures (25, 35 and 40 °C) to determine and optimize sulfate conversions for an effective AMD biotreatment. Pilot-scale studies have generated data on the effect of flow rates of acid mine water (MGD) and varied inlet sulfate concentrations in the influents on the resultant outlet sulfate concentration in the effluents and on the number of SRB membrane modules needed for the desired sulfate conversion in those systems. The pilot-scale data indicate that the SRB membrane bioreactors systems can be applied toward field-scale biotreatment of AMD and for recovery of high purity metals and an agriculturally usable water.  相似文献

A novel process has been used to biodegrade phenol present in an acidic (1 M HCI) and salty (5% w/w NaCl) synthetically bioreactor, in which the phenol present in the wastewater is separated from the inorganic components by means of a silicone rubber membrane. Transfer of the phenol from the wastewater and into a biological growth medium allows biodegradation to proceed under controlled conditions which are unaffected by the hostile inorganic composition of the wastewater. At a wastewater flow rate of 18 mL h(-1) (contact time 6 h), 98.5% of the phenol present in the wastewater at an inlet concentration of 1000 mg ( (-1) ) was degraded; at a contact time of 1.9 h, 65% of the phenol was degraded. Phenol degradation was accompanied by growth of a biofilm on the membrane tubes and by conversion of approximately 80% of the carbon entering the system to CO(2) carbon. Analysis of the transport of phenol across the membrane revealed that the major resistance to mass transfer arose in the diffusion of phenol across the silicone rubber membrane. A mathematical model was used to describe the transfer of phenol across the membrane and the subsequent diffusion and reaction of phenol in the biofilm attached to the membrane tube. This analysis showed that (a) the attached biofilm significantly lowers the mass transfer driving force for phenol across the membrane, and (b) oxygen concentration limits the phenol degradation rate in the biofilm. These conclusions from the model are consistent with the experimental results. (c) 1993 Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), representing a wide range of products mainly generated by industrial activity, are involved in air pollution. This study deals with a new biological treatment process of gaseous effluent combining a gas/liquid contactor called an "aero-ejector" and a membrane bioreactor. Combining these two innovative technologies enables a high elimination efficiency to be reached. We first focus on transfer phenomena characterization in a pilot installation on a laboratory scale, using a gaseous effluent polluted with a low ethanol concentration (7.1 x 10(-3) kg.m(-3)). These experiments demonstrated the good transfer performances since 90% of the ethanol was absorbed in the liquid phase in one step. After this physical characterization, the biological aspect of the system was studied using the yeast Candida utilis as microorganism. During the experiment, no ethanol was measured in the fermentation broth nor in the outlet gas, confirming the efficiency of ethanol elimination by C. utilis. The experimental procedure emerging from the present study strongly validates the suitability of this process for ethanol removal from air.  相似文献

Controlled landfilling remains a commonly applied method for municipal solid waste disposal with leachate generation being an inevitable consequence of the decomposition of the waste and the percolation of water through decomposing waste. The membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology has evolved into an effective process in treating such high strength wastewater streams because of its ability to retain high biomass concentration through membrane separation. This paper presents a critical review of the application of the MBR technology for the treatment of leachate and evaluates its performance in this context while highlighting factors affecting MBR operation. The paper concludes with outlining existing gaps and future research needs to improve the understanding and performance of the MBR technology for leachate treatment.  相似文献

In this article a hydrodynamic and rheological analysis of a continuous airlift bioreactor with high-cell-density system is presented. A highly flocculating recombinant strain of Sacharomyces cerevisiae containing genes for lactose transport (lactose permease) and hydrolysis (beta-galactosidase) was exploited to ferment lactose from cheese whey to ethanol. The magnetic particle-tracer method was used to assess the effect of operational conditions (air-flow rate, biomass concentration) on hydrodynamic behavior of an airlift bioreactor during the fermentation process. Measurements of liquid circulation velocity showed the existence of a critical value of biomass concentration at which a dramatic deceleration of net liquid flow appeared with increasing biomass quantity. Rheological analysis revealed exponential increase of viscosity of the yeast floc suspension at the same biomass concentration of about 73 g/dm3 corresponding to 42.8% v/v of solid fraction. These facts have a particular importance for the successful processing of a high-cell-density airlift bioreactor as only a circulated flow regime will be favorable to keep the solid particles in suspension state and evenly distributed throughout the bioreactor.  相似文献

Treatment of a gas contaminated with a mixture of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene (BTEX) compounds in a 40-cm-deep laboratory-scale bioreactor containing suspended biomass was investigated. Gas treatment efficiency was not significantly impacted by different BTEX mixtures, and approximately 99% removal was achieved for volumetric loadings of 11 to 18 mg-BTEX/L-reactor volume/hr (specific biomass loadings of 0.27 to 0.83 g-BTEX/g-VSS/d; inlet concentrations of total BTEX of 2.3 to 4.3 mg/L) and operational solids retention times (SRTs) of 1.7, 2.7, and 9.2 days. Maximum specific biodegradation rates of the reactor biomass increased as the reactor SRTs decreased. Under specific loadings greater than 1 g-BTEX/g-VSS/d the gas treatment became biokinetically limited, such that BTEX and unidentified BTEX metabolites accumulated in the bioreactor liquid over time. BTEX gas-liquid mass transfer was sufficient in the 40-cm-deep sparged liquid reactor to provide high BTEX treatment efficiency.  相似文献

Anaerobic biological wastewater treatment has numerous advantages over conventional aerobic processes; anaerobic biotechnologies, however, still have a reputation for low-quality effluents and operational instabilities. In this study, anaerobic bioreactors were augmented with an oxygen-transferring membrane to improve treatment performance. Two anaerobic bioreactors were fed a synthetic high-strength wastewater (chemical oxygen demand, or COD, of 11,000 mg l(-1)) and concurrently operated until biomass concentrations and effluent quality stabilized. Membrane aeration was then initiated in one of these bioreactors, leading to substantially improved COD removal efficiency (> 95%) compared to the unaerated control bioreactor (approximately 65%). The membrane-augmented anaerobic bioreactor required substantially less base addition to maintain circumneutral pH and exhibited 75% lower volatile fatty acid concentrations compared to the unaerated control bioreactor. The membrane-aerated bioreactor, however, failed to improve nitrogenous removal efficiency and produced 80% less biogas than the control bioreactor. A third membrane-augmented anaerobic bioreactor was operated to investigate the impact of start-up procedure on nitrogenous pollutant removal. In this bioreactor, excellent COD (>90%) and nitrogenous (>95%) pollutant removal efficiencies were observed at an intermediate COD concentration (5,500 mg l(-1)). Once the organic content of the influent wastewater was increased to full strength (COD = 11,000 mg l(-1)), however, nitrogenous pollutant removal stopped. This research demonstrates that partial aeration of anaerobic bioreactors using oxygen-transferring membranes is a novel approach to improve treatment performance. Additional research, however, is needed to optimize membrane surface area versus the organic loading rate to achieve the desired effluent quality.  相似文献

Wastewater treatment based on ecological principles is a low cost and highly desirable solution for the developing countries like Pakistan. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of biological treatment systems including Internal Circulation (IC) anaerobic bioreactor and constructed wetlands (CWs) containing macrophytes and mixed algal cultures for industrial wastewater treatment. The IC bioreactor reduced COD (52%), turbidity (89%), EC (24%) of the industrial wastewater. However, the effluents of IC bioreactor did not comply with National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) of Pakistan. Post-treatment of IC bioreactor effluents was accomplished in CW containing macrophytes (Arundo donax and Eichhornia crassipes) and mixed algal culture. The CWs planted with macrophytes lowered the concentrations of COD (89%) and turbidity (99%). CWs with algal biomass were not effective in further polishing the effluent. Inhibition of algal biomass growth was observed due to physicochemical characteristics of wastewater. The integrated treatment system consisting of IC bioreactor and macrophytes was found more suitable option for industrial wastewater treatment.  相似文献

A rigorous approach to mathematical modeling of a continuous aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) for the treatment of wastewater is reported. The idea is to apply the activated sludge model ASM3 to the special configuration of a membrane bioreactor. Therefore, the biochemical processes modeled by the ASM3 were implemented together with mass balances typical of a MBR running at constant TSS. The model parameters were adapted to the properties of an artificial wastewater by using a global search algorithm. The model could be validated by comparing effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), sludge production and CO2 concentration in the exhaust to the experimental data.  相似文献

A mini bioreactor (3.0 mL volume) has been developed and shown to be a versatile tool for rapidly screening and quantifying the response of organisms on environmental perturbations. The mini bioreactor is essentially a plug flow device transformed into a well-mixed reactor by a recycle flow of the broth. The gas and liquid phases are separated by a silicone membrane. Dynamic mass transfer experiments were performed to determine the mass transfer capacities for oxygen and carbon dioxide. The mass transfer coefficients for oxygen and carbon dioxide were found to be 1.55 +/- 0.17 x 10(-5) m/s and 4.52 +/- 0.60 x 10(-6) m/s, respectively. Cultivation experiments with the 3.0 mL bioreactor show that (i) it can maintain biomass in the same physiological state as the 4.0 L lab scale bioreactor, (ii) reproducible perturbation experiments such as changing substrate uptake rate can be readily performed and the physiological response monitored quantitatively in terms of the O2 and CO2 uptake and production rates.  相似文献

Dichloromethane removal from waste gases with a trickle-bed bioreactor   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A 66 dm3 trickle-bed bioreactor was constructed to assess the possibilities of eliminating dichloromethane from industrial waste gases. The trickle-bed bioreactor was filled with a randomly-stacked polypropylene packing material over which a liquid phase was circulated. The pH of the circulating liquid was externally controlled at a value of 7 and the temperature was maintained at 25 °C. The packing material was very quickly covered by a dichloromethane-degrading biofilm which thrived on the dichloromethane supplied via the gas phase. The biological system was very stable and not sensitive to fluctuations in the dichloromethane supply. Removal of dichloromethane from synthetic waste gas was possible down to concentrations well below the maximal allowable concentration of 150mg/m3 required by West-German law for gaseous emissions. At higher dichloromethane concentrations specific dichloromethane degradation rates of 200 g h–1 m–3 were possible. At very low inlet concentrations, dichloromethane elimination was completely mass transfer limited. The gas-phase mixing could be described by a series of 10 to 7 identical ideally-mixed tanks for superficial gas velocities ranging from 150 to 450 m/h. Dichloromethane elimination with the tricklebed bioreactor was modelled using an overall mass-transfer coefficient that was dependent on the gas and liquid velocities. Masstransfer resistance within the biofilm was also accounted for. Using the model, elimination efficiencies were predicted which were very close to the experimentally observed values.  相似文献

A mathematical model for a three phase fluidized bed bioreactor (TFBBR) was proposed to describe oxygen utilization rate, biomass concentration and the removal efficiency of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in wastewater treatment. The model consisted of the biofilm model to describe the oxygen uptake rate and the hydraulic model to describe flow characteristics to cause the oxygen distribution in the reactor. The biofilm model represented the oxygen uptake rate by individual bioparticle and the hydrodynamics of fluids presented an axial dispersion flow with back mixing in the liquid phase and a plug flow in the gas phase. The difference of settling velocity along the column height due to the distributions of size and number of bioparticle was considered. The proposed model was able to predict the biomass concentration and the dissolved oxygen concentration along the column height. The removal efficiency of COD was calculated based on the oxygen consumption amounts that were obtained from the dissolved oxygen concentration. The predicted oxygen concentration by the proposed model agreed reasonably well with experimental measurement in a TFBBR. The effects of various operating parameters on the oxygen concentration were simulated based on the proposed model. The media size and media density affected the performance of a TFBBR. The dissolved oxygen concentration was significantly affected by the superficial liquid velocity but the removal efficiency of COD was significantly affected by the superficial gas velocity. An analysis of the local processes occurring in a trickle-bed bioreactor (TBB) with a first-order bioreaction shows that the identification of the TBB operating regime requires knowledge of the substrate concentration in the liquid phase. If the substrate liquid concentration is close to 0, the rate-controlling step is mass transfer at the gas-liquid interface; when it is close to the value in equilibrium with the gas phase, the controlling step is the phenomena occurring in the biofilm. CS2 removal rate data obtained in a TBB with a Thiobacilii consortia biofilm are analyzed to obtain the mass transfer and kinetic parameters, and to show that the bioreactor operates in a regime mainly controlled by mass transfer. A TBB model with two experimentally determined parameters is developed and used to show how the bioreactor size depends on the rate-limiting step, the absorption factor, the substrate fractional conversion, and on the gas and liquid contact pattern. Under certain conditions, the TBB size is independent of the flowing phases' contact pattern. The model effectively describes substrate gas and liquid concentration data for mass transfer and biodegradation rate controlled processes.  相似文献

Membrane bioreactors can replace the activated sludge process and the final clarification step in municipal wastewater treatment. The combination of bioreactor and crossflow microfiltration allows for a high chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction of synthetic wastewater. From biomass, grown at high production rates in the aerobic bioreactor, energy rich biogas can be obtained in a subsequent anaerobic bioreactor. In this paper, experimental data from a laboratory scale membrane bioreactor are presented. The degradation of synthetic wastewater at short hydraulic retention times down to 1.5 h has been studied. The organic loading rate (OLR) has been varied in the range of 6-13 kg m(-3) per day. At steady state a high quality filtrate could be obtained at different operating conditions. At biomass concentrations of 10-22 g l(-1), COD reduction was above 95%.  相似文献
