In Mediterranean areas, river systems are key for maintaining regional biodiversity by providing a high diversity of habitats. We studied bird community recovery for 9 years (2001–2009) during landscape restoration and Guadiamar Green Corridor establishment in the area affected by the Aznalcóllar mine spill (SW Spain, 1998). One year following plant restoration (3 years after the spill), values for α‐ and β‐bird species diversity were high, sooner than reported for similar restoration processes elsewhere. Species richness, ecological diversity, and abundance increased only slightly in the following 8 years. Overlap between communities in sequential years, measured by similarity indexes, increased throughout the study period to about 70% during final survey years, and most breeding bird species present before the accident again inhabit the area. Only 5 years after the mine accident, bird communities in the restored site were similar in species richness, abundance, and diversity to an unaffected reference site; redundancy analysis demonstrated that bird communities were also similar between the reference river and the Guadiamar. Despite the severity of the mine accident, our results suggest a swift recovery of the bird community. We attribute this success to the rapid restoration of habitat availability and the resilience of the birds. This long‐term study contributes to our limited knowledge of bird species response to habitat restoration following toxic spills in Mediterranean habitats.  相似文献

The influence of environmental variables on native and exotic fish species richness and diversity was analysed 8 years after one of the most environmentally harmful toxic spills worldwide. Environment‐diversity relationships were addressed on different scales, and values were also compared with those of six similar basins not affected by the spill, with the aim of determining whether this disturbance was still exerting an influence on the fish assemblage. Results showed higher native species richness in environments with low human influence, no reservoirs upstream, a large drainage area and coarse substrate reaches. For native fish, variables at both the catchment and site were equally relevant. Exotic fish were mainly favoured by site‐scale factors such as valley width downstream from the reservoir, where the alteration of the river channel and accumulated disturbances give them an advantage vs native species. Overall, 8 years after the accident, richness and diversity of the Guadiamar fish assemblage seemed more affected by anthropogenic impacts than by the long‐term influence of the toxic spill. This work highlights that the potentially synergic effects of anthropogenic factors must be taken into account when monitoring the long‐term effects of pollution events.  相似文献

Aim To determine the effect and relative importance of geographic and local environmental factors on species richness and turnover of ant assemblages in floodplain forests across the Amazon basin. Location Twenty‐six mature forest sites scattered along the entire extension of the Amazon River in Brazil. The study area encompassed nearly 18° of longitude and 3.5° of latitude. Methods Systematic collections of ants were performed at each site during the low‐water season (i.e. when forests are not inundated) using three complementary sampling methods. We used variance partitioning techniques to assess the relative effects of the spatial (latitude and longitude) and environmental (rainfall, length of the dry season and flood height) variables on ant species richness and composition. Results There was a twofold variation in the number of species per site, which was largely explained by inter‐site variations in rainfall seasonality and flooding intensity. In general, there were more species at sites located in the western part of the basin, where the dry season is less severe, or near the river estuary, where precipitation is also high and flooding is less intense. Ant community composition was also affected by environmental heterogeneity. For instance, some species only occurred at those sites less affected by the river’s seasonal flooding, whereas others were mostly associated with the drier or wetter regions of the basin. In addition, the turnover of species increased significantly as geographic distances increased. Nevertheless, the rate of change was small given that many species had a broad distribution across the study area. Main conclusions Ant distribution patterns along the floodplain forests of the Amazon appear to be controlled to a relatively large extent by the current gradient in flooding intensity and – most importantly – in precipitation. Altered rainfall regimes resulting from global warming and land‐use change thus have the potential to influence these patterns.  相似文献

This study analyzes the variations in the structure and composition of ant communities in burned Pinus nigra forests in central Catalonia (NE Spain). Pinus nigra forests do not recover after fire, changing to shrublands and oak coppices. For this reason, we suggest that ant communities of burned P. nigra forests will change after fire, because the post‐fire scenario, in particular with the increase of open areas, is different to the unburned one, and more favourable for some species than for others. In four locations previously occupied by P. nigra forests where different fires occurred 1, 5, 13 and 19 yr before the sampling, we sampled the structure and composition of ant communities with pitfall traps, tree traps and net sweeping in unburned plots and in plots affected by canopy and understory fire. The results obtained suggest that canopy and understory fire had little effect on the structure of ant communities. Thus, many variables concerning ant communities were not modified either by fire type (understory or canopy fire) or by time since fire. However, a number of particular species were affected, either positively or negatively, by canopy fire: three species characteristic of forest habitats decreased after fire, while eight species characteristic of open habitats increased in areas affected by canopy fire, especially in the first few years after fire. These differences in ant community composition between burned and unburned plots imply that the maximum richness is achieved when there is a mixture of unburned forests and areas burned with canopy fire. Moreover, as canopy cover in P. nigra forests burned with canopy fire is not completed in the period of time studied, the presence of the species that are characteristic of burned areas remains along the chronosequence studied, while the species that disappear after fire do not recover in the period of time considered. Overall, the results obtained indicate that there is a persistent replacement of ant species in burned P. nigra forests, as is also the case with vegetation.  相似文献

为了阐明三峡水库初次蓄水后干流库区枝角类的时空分布规律, 2004年4月至2005年1月, 在600余公里干流库区设置10个样点, 定性和定量采集枝角类标本。本次调查共采到9种枝角类, 其中春季8种, 夏季5种, 秋季2种, 冬季3种。枝角类种类组成的空间分布差异明显, 河流状态的江段有4种, 水库状态的江段有7种, 水库状态的江段距大坝越近, 枝角类种类越丰富。枝角类的密度和生物量的空间分布和季节变化规律一致, 季节间差异极显著(P<0.01), 春季最高, 夏季次之, 秋季和冬季较低; 空间分布上表现为在干流库区的纵向分布上差异极显著(P<0.01), 河流状态样点远低于水库状态的样点, 水库上游江段又低于下游坝前段。结果显示三峡水库的枝角类具有明显的纵向分布和季节变化特征。  相似文献

This study analyzes the somatic condition of southern Iberian barbel Luciobarbus sclateri (Günther, 1868) in the Guadiamar River (SW Iberian Peninsula). This river was seriously affected by a toxic spill of about 4?million cubic meters of acidic water and 2?million cubic meters of mud rich in heavy metals. Once the spill removal works concluded, sites affected and unaffected by the accident were sampled to study its effects on the fish fauna. The ecological variables registered were related to water quality, physical state of reaches, ecological quality, resources exploited by fish, and potential intra-specific interactions. From an initial 15 ecological variables, seasonal water flow and pH explained most of the variation in barbel condition. This study shows that the Guadiamar River, 56?months after the accident, is still undergoing a recovery process where, beyond ecological variables, proximity to the affected area is the most influential factor for fish condition.  相似文献

Aim In the Mediterranean Basin, the main forest communities vary in their ability to recover after fire. In this study we analyse the effects of fire on ant communities occurring in various vegetation types distributed along a geographical gradient in the western Mediterranean region. Location The study was carried out in burned and unburned habitats of 22 sites corresponding to eight vegetation types distributed along a gradient of dryness throughout Catalonia (north‐east Spain). Methods We placed five pairs of plots (one plot located in the burned area and the second one placed in the unburned margin) per site. We compared ant communities in these unburned and burned plot types 8 years after fire using pitfall traps. Traps were set out in mid‐May and mid‐July. We analysed the structure and composition of ant communities in the burned and unburned areas of these vegetation types using anova tests, correspondence analysis (CA) and linear regression. Results The resilience of ant communities varies with vegetation type. Ant communities in forests with high resilience also recover rapidly after fire, while those in forests that do not recover after fire show the lowest resilience. Species richness does not depend on burning or vegetation type. The resilience of these Mediterranean ant communities to fire is related to the environmental characteristics of the region where they live. Accordingly, differences between burned and unburned habitats are smaller for ant communities in areas with higher water deficit in summer than for those in moister ones. Main conclusions The structure and composition of ant communities after fire depends on the level of direct mortality caused by the fire. It affects ant species differently, as determined by the habitats used for nesting and foraging. The reestablishment of vegetation cover depends on forest composition before the fire. As vegetation cover determines resource and microhabitat availability and competitive relationships among species, forest composition before the fire also affects post‐fire recovery of ant communities to the medium‐term. Finally, ant communities living in drier areas recover more quickly after fire than those living in moister ones. This pattern might be because in areas with higher water deficit there are more species characteristic of open environments, which are habitats similar to those generated after fire.  相似文献

Abstract The dry sclerophyll forest community of the Tomago Sandbeds, near Newcastle in New South Wales, has been subject to regular disturbances due to fire, clearing and strip mining for over 18 years. In this study we use chronosequence analysis to examine whether the structure of the ant community varies with the type of disturbance and the time since disturbance. We treat the recovery trajectory after fire as a control trajectory because fire is an endogenous disturbance. The main analyses were based on an ant fauna comprising 72 species sampled from 44 sites surveyed in December 1992. Comparison with samples taken in April and December 1991, and for cumulative records for all sites over this 20 month period, all show quantitatively similar responses. Results suggest that while fire has a minor effect on the composition of the ant community over time, the impact of clearing and mining is much more severe. Ant species richness at cleared and mined sites recovers rapidly, overshoots controls in mid-succession and returns to control levels by 18 years after disturbance. The cumulative number of species recorded over all sites (from the total recorded fauna of 82 species) for each different disturbance type were: burned, 61; cleared, 55; and mined 56. Species composition at cleared or mined sites, after 18 years, approaches but does not match controls. The recovery trend for mined sites lags slightly behind that for cleared sites, which have reached 49% similarity with the oldest burned sites, while mined sites have not exceeded 39% similarity of species composition. The main patterns in the ant community appear to be related to habitat variables. These results provide further evidence that the ant community may be used as a reliable bio-indicator for evaluating the extent of habitat damage and recovery after disturbance in these Australian forests.  相似文献

Many factors drive the organization of communities including environmental factors, dispersal abilities, and competition. In particular, ant communities have high levels of interspecific competition and dominance that may affect community assembly processes. We used a combination of surveys and nest supplementation experiments to examine effects of a dominant ground‐nesting ant (Pheidole synanthropica) on (1) arboreal twig‐nesting, (2) ground‐foraging, and (3) coffee‐foraging ant communities in coffee agroecosystems. We surveyed these communities in high‐ and low‐density areas of P. synanthropica over 2 years. To test for effects on twig ant recruitment, we placed artificial nesting resources on coffee plants in areas with and without P. synanthropica. The first sampling period revealed differences in ant species composition on the ground, in coffee plants, and artificial nests between high‐ and low‐density sites of P. synanthropica. High‐density sites also had significantly lower recruitment of twig ants and had species‐specific effects on twig ant species. Prior to the second survey period, abundance of P. synanthropica declined in the high‐density sites, such that P. synanthropica densities no longer differed. Subsequent sampling revealed no difference in total recruitment of twig ants to artificial nests between treatments. Likewise, surveys of ground and coffee ants no longer showed significant differences in community composition. The results from the first experimental period, followed by survey results after the decline in P. synanthropica densities suggest that dominant ants can drive community assembly via both recruitment and establishment of colonies within the community.  相似文献

Community ecology seeks to unravel the mechanisms that allow species to coexist in space. Some of the contending mechanisms may generate tractable signatures in the amount of trait and phylogenetic dispersion among co‐existing species. When a community presents a pattern with reduced trait or phylogenetic dispersion, mechanisms based on ecological filters are brought into consideration. On the other hand, limiting similarity mechanisms such as competitive exclusion are proposed when communities present patterns of trait or phylogenetic even‐dispersion. The strength of these mechanisms likely varies with the spatial scale of an observed sample. I surveyed species‐rich tropical litter ant communities in a spatially nested design that allowed me to explore the spatial scales, fine (0.25 m2), intermediate (9 m2), and broad (361 m2) at which these mechanisms act. I then assessed the relationship between observed ant communities and potential species pools ranging in size, from plot, site, and island‐wide areas. Patterns of phylogenetic dispersion within ant communities suggested that ant communities were composed of species that were more closely related than expected by a random sampling of phylogenetic pools. The magnitude of phylogenetic ‘clustering’ increased with the size of the species pool but was similar among communities assembled from different spatial scales. Patterns of dispersion of one ecological trait (i.e. body size) within ant communities also showed clustering of body sizes, and most communities were composed of ant species that were smaller than expected by a random sampling of trait pools. Trait clustering increased with the size of the species pool but decreased at broad spatial scales. Together, these results suggest that ecological filters, not interspecific interactions, are structuring tropical ant communities, favoring clades with small worker sizes. The larger dependency on the size of regional pools than on the spatial scale suggests that environmental heterogeneity is greater among than within the study sites.  相似文献

We examined long‐term responses of an Amazonian bird assemblage to wildfire disturbance, investigating how understory birds reacted to forest regeneration 1, 3, and 10 years after a widespread fire event. The bird community was sampled along the Arapiuns and Maró river catchments in central Brazilian Amazonia. Sampling took place in 1998, 2000, and 2008 using mist‐nets in eight plots (four burned, four unburned sites). Species richness did not change significantly in unburned sites. In burned sites, however, we found significantly lower richness in 1998, higher richness in 2000, and similar richness in 2008. Multi‐dimensional scaling ordination showed consistent differences in bird communities both within burned sites sampled in different sampling years, and between burned and unburned sites in all years. Of the 30 most abundant species, 12 had not recovered 10 years after the fires, including habitat specialists such as mixed flocks specialists and ant‐followers. Fire‐disturbance favored three species (two hummingbirds and a manakin) in the short term only. All other species were either favored throughout the study (seven species of omnivores and small insectivores) or did not show a clear response (eight species). In burned sites, we also found significantly lower abundance of species sensitive to disturbances and habitat specialists over the entire study period. Although the bird community seems to be recovering in terms of richness, the overall community composition and abundance of some species in post‐burned and unburned sites remain very different, and have not recovered after 10 years of forest regeneration.  相似文献

The fish communities of 371 sites from 4 natural regions of the Seine River basin were studied. The sites were located from small to medium size rivers (catchment area : 5 to 3895 km2). We examined the differences between local communities according to river size (estimated by catchment area) and region. In the Seine River basin, fish communities follow a general organisation rule: total species richness increases with river size and importance of limnophilic species versus rheophilic ones increases from upstream to downstream. However, fish communities show differences of total species richness, species richness of reproductive groups and species composition between the four natural regions of the basin. Particularly, river size and regional organisation of environmental factors interact on species composition of communities and several regional patterns of longitudinal changes of fish communities are identified. The origin and range of regional differences of fish communities are discussed according to historical and environmental factors.  相似文献

The River Yamuna emerges from Saptarishi Kund, Yamunotri and merge with River Ganges at Allahabad, India. Anthropogenic stress has affected the water quality of the river Yamuna drastically in the stretch traversing Delhi and its satellite towns (National Capital Region, NCR). In the present study, effect of water quality on the microbial life in the River Yamuna was analyzed using ciliate communities (Protista, Ciliophora) as bio-indicators. Water samples were collected from six sampling sites chosen according to the levels of pollution along the river and water quality was analysed using standard physicochemical factors. As the river traverses Delhi NCR, water quality deteriorates considerably as indicated by the Water Quality Index at the selected sampling sites. Seventy-four ciliate species representing nine classes were recorded. Based on the Shannon diversity index, maximum species diversity was found at the point where the river enters Delhi. The saprobity index showed the river water was beta-mesosaprobic when the river enters Delhi and alpha-mesosaprobic at downstream sites after the first major drain outfall. Significant relationship between the spatial variation in ciliate communities and abiotic parameters indicate that ciliates can be used as effective bioindicators of pollution in the River Yamuna.  相似文献

Abstract. Succession was studied on plots with the upper soil horizon removed in an area affected by acidic air pollution in the Kru?né Hory Mts., Czech Republic. 10 permanent 1‐m2 plots were marked and vegetation recorded annually using a grid of 100 subplots from 1989 to 1995. Constrained ordination analyses showed that soil texture is the most important environmental factor influencing the course of succession. Its effect on species composition increases with successional age of the plant community. On fine‐grained soils species‐poor communities dominated by grasses (Calamagrostis villosa, Deschampsiaflexuosa) and on coarse‐grained soils species‐rich communities dominated by heather (Calluna vulgaris) developed. Succession proceeded from communities where species composition was determined by diaspore availability towards communities where species composition depended on environmental conditions. Successional communities after 10 yr are more dependent on soil characteristics and consequently environmental determination increases over the course of succession and causes the communities to diverge.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The density (rate of encountering foraging raids) and species richness of army ants (Formicidae: Ecitoninae, and behaviourally convergent Ponerinae) was measured in montane tropical forest. Above-ground and subterranean army ant raids were sampled using standard protocols at four sites across an elevational gradient (1200–1650 m above mean sea level) in and near cloud forest in the area of Monteverde, Costa Rica.
2. Mean ambient temperature differed among sites, and decreased with elevation. For the above-ground foraging army ant species, raid rates also declined with elevation. Surface army ant raid rates, however, were not affected by day to day weather variation within sites (temperature, cloud cover, or precipitation).
3. For the underground foraging army ant species, raid rates did not vary directionally with elevation, and subterranean raid rates were not affected by day to day weather variation within sites.
4. Army ant species richness was not directionally related to elevation, and species sharing among sites was generally high.
5. Army ant community structure changes with elevation in Neotropical montane forest, and the results suggest that the strongest effects are of temperature regimes on the density of raids. These findings provide a baseline against which to detect changes in army ant communities that may accompany directional climate change in tropical cloud forests.  相似文献

The Botryosphaeriaceae are common and diverse members of fungal communities infecting woody plants. They are also increasingly being used as model organisms to understand patterns in the global movement of latent pathogens. The aim of this study was to consider the species richness of the Botryosphaeriaceae associated with the native Acacia (Vachellia) karroo across South Africa, and the variation of species at specific local sites over time. The diversity of these fungi associated with different tissues of this host plant was also considered. These questions were addressed by sampling healthy A. karroo from 23 sites in South Africa and by more intensive hierarchical sampling conducted at 40 sites in one area over 3 yr. In total, 13 species of the Botryosphaeriaceae were identified, including seven that were isolated only from the more intensively sampled area. There was a clear geographical influence, with some species occurring only in some parts of the country. Significant variation in the species richness over time for the intensively sampled area was found and there was no evidence of tissue specificity for this group of fungi in leaves, branches and branchlets. Results of pathogenicity trials showed highly variable lesion sizes for the isolated species in comparison to the control, with Sphaeropsis variabilis, Lasiodiplodia theobromae and Neofusicoccum australe being the most pathogenic. The overall results revealed a rich diversity of Botryosphaeriaceae on this native host, which varied significantly both geographically and on individual trees, even in the absence of obvious disease.  相似文献

Abstract Processes acting on different spatial and temporal scales may influence local species richness. Ant communities are usually described as interactive and therefore determined by local processes. In this paper we tested two hypotheses linked to the question of why there is local variation in arboreal ant species richness in the Brazilian savanna (‘cerrado’). The hypotheses are: (i) there is a positive relationship between ant species richness and tree species richness, used as a surrogate of heterogeneity; and (ii) there is a positive relationship between ant species richness and tree density, used as a surrogate of resource availability. Arboreal ants were sampled in two cerrado sites in Brazil using baited pitfall traps and manual sampling, in quadrats of 20 m × 50 m. Ant species richness in each quadrat was used as the response variable in regression tests, using tree species richness and tree density as explanatory variables. Ant species richness responded positively to tree species richness and density. Sampling site also influenced ant species richness, and the relationship between tree density and tree species richness was also positive and significant. Tree species richness may have influenced ant species richness through three processes: (i) increasing the variety of resources and allowing the existence of a higher number of specialist species; (ii) increasing the amount of resources to generalist species; and (iii) some other unmeasured factor may have influenced both ant and tree species richness. Tree density may also have influenced ant species richness through three processes: (i) increasing the amount of resources and allowing a higher ant species richness; (ii) changing habitat conditions and dominance hierarchies in ant communities; and (iii) increasing the area and causing a species–area pattern. Processes acting on larger scales, such as disturbance, altitude and evolutionary histories, as well as sampling effect may have caused the difference between sites.  相似文献

In the framework of a macroinvertebrate drift study, the oligochaete community was analysed over one year (1989) at six sites located in a partly impounded reach of the Upper Rhône River (France). Drift composition between sites was somewhat affected by the environmental conditions. These differences were caused by significant deviations in drift rates (P < 0.05) of endobenthic oligochaetes and non-swimming Naididae. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) among the swimming Naididae. As the latter strongly dominated, global spatial differences in the drift were weak. Temporal changes constituted the main source of variability in drifting oligochaetes. Life cycles and reproductive ecology of four major swimming Naidid species, Nais elinguis, Stylaria lacustris, Nais christinae, and Nais barbata, explained most of the drift structure over the year. Hydrological fluctuations also affected drift structure, both for swimming and non-swimming species. Taxon richness and relative abundance in the drift were very similar to those obtained in the river benthos from a reference reach previously studied. There was a lack of stygobiont and stygophilous species that are frequent in area of groundwater seepage. Biological and environmental implications of oligochaete drift are stressed. The drift phenomenon is appropriated to provide ecological informations on oligochaete communities in fast flowing and deep, large rivers.  相似文献
